OKAY the sparknotes lore is as follows:
abby dahlkemper was the first signing from nc courage. she came back from back surgery last august (she had like really bad sciatica, i would suggest listening to her snacks episode it’s an insane story). a real solid defender, i believe she is a vice captain.
alex morgan and kailen sheridan (canadian minister of defence) were also huge signings/trades before the first season.
they drafted some big talent in naomi girma (in girma we trust 🫡) and jaedyn shaw, who are both ballers.
kyra carusa has been a solid forward for us as well, she has a couple of bangers under her belt and plays for republic of ireland.
if you want i can give you a rundown on other player profiles but here’s the good stuff (tea):
jill ellis is the president 🫠 of course, as much as i hate to say it, she was extremely successful as uswnt coach but also that program ran several players into the ground, partially under her watch. players playing through pain etc.
casey stoney is an icon. she has been fined many a time for talking about refs. most iconic moment imo is when she was sitting on a cooler and got a red for allegedly kicking the ball when it went out of bounds and delaying the game. hilarious stuff.
there’s the angel city vs wave rivalry because california and this offseason during free agency, wave signed former angel city midfielder savannah mccaskill. there’s the rivalry aspect, but the additional wrinkle of not many wave fans wanting her and it’s kind of funny. she’s not a terrible player per se, but she’s made some less than clean tackles in her time and sometimes makes very questionable decisions on the field. there’s a running bit on twitter about fans of both teams kindly offering savannah mccaskill to each other.
but really san diego has good vibes overall and is wildly successful for a team that has only existed for two seasons
THANK YOU i am caught up

honestly i think alex morgan’s response is the most we’ll get. i thought it was a pretty decent statement. it didn’t dismiss, write off, or invalidate the “allegations”. it didn’t defend the wave organization or jill ellis. it acknowledges the need to do better. it would be nice to have something more explicit but i understand that it’s probably difficult having to consider your child in all of this. and that players are also employees and despite the yates report, there is still a persistent culture of silence, especially under jill ellis given that she was named several times in the yates report and is still employed. i do wish alex morgan wasn’t the only player to put out a statement. i understand some of the younger players not wanting to, because their salaries are not that great and jill ellis still has hella power in the soccer world. but if abby dahlkemper or emily van egmond, kyra carusa, some of those players said something, i think it would make a difference.
I wouldn't be surprised if players are being told by the organization to keep mum about it

angel city is not my favourite team, but not for any particular reason other than i'm a san diego fan so there's a rivalry. but ACFC is a fun team to cheer for. they have a great environment and are going to be unstoppable when christen press comes back. they have a great coach, who became head coach like 6 months into last season and went on i think a 12 game unbeaten streak?? they also have awesome young talent in the thompson sisters. sydney leroux also scored a sick bicycle kick for them in the last game of the regular season.
san diego wave is my personal favourite. alex morgan is the main captain, and though she hasn't had a great year for the uswnt, she's still been a key player for the wave. it's always fun to watch her. young players to watch: jaedyn shaw. she's scored some bangers for club and a few in international friendlies as well now. naomi girma is one of the best defenders in the world right now, which is so impressive considering she's only entering her 3rd year as a pro. they also have abby dahlkemper who is getting back into her groove after back surgery. i also love kyra carusa and also the legend emily van egmond.
chicago redstars: i have a feeling they're going to become a real threat in the next two or three years. they finished last in the standings this last season but are under new ownership, and got an amazing new coach in lorne donaldson. he took the jamaican women's team to the knockouts this last world cup without funding from the JFF (literally, the team had to fundraise on gofundme just to fly to australia). they lost a lot of huge players in the offseason but just signed mal swanson to a huge deal (literally one of the best forwards in the world and is only 25). they've freed up a lot of cap space with the players that aren't there anymore so i'm expecting some good moves form them.
houston dash: they finished 10th in the standings last year. they're not that great, but i think in a few years they'll get up there. they've only made playoffs once and it was a 1st round exit, but they have won a challenge cup. players of note: jane campbell (arguably the best goalkeeper in the league last season), alozie, chapman, prince, sanchez, ordoñez. i don't know too too much about them.
now i really have to do some homework but i will come back for a rundown on the remaining teams
that’s very long, i actually agree that angel city is such a fun team to cheer for, they do have good signings, especially when they have the future of usa, the thompson siblings.
san diego was the other team, that i might go for. honestly it falls down between the two, but who knows if i actually end up supporting a different time, kinda like a plot twist.
oh? chicago red stars has the coach who took jamaica through the knock-out rounds, judging by that, they’ll be a real threat soon, assuming that the coach stays for a while.

Expansion Draft Step 3: Mock Draft
So here’s how I think it would go (or how it would go if I were in charge of every single team in the league).
Bay selects Sam Hiatt from the Reign
Reign protects Elyse Bennett
Utah selects Sarah Griffith from Chicago
Chicago protects Jenna Bike
Bay selects Ryanne Brown from the Reign
Reign is out of the draft
Utah selects Amanda Kowalski from Chicago
Chicago is out of the draft
Bay selects Kyra Carusa from Wave
Wave protects Sofia Jakobssen
Utah selects Thembi Kgatlana from Louisville
Louisville protects Paige Monaghan
Bay selects Tyler Lussi from North Carolina
North Carolina protects Tess Boade
Utah selects Julia Lester from Louisville
Louisville is out of the draft
Bay selects Rachel Hill from Wave
Wave is out of the draft
Bay selects Katelyn Rowland from North Carolina
Draft is over
I feel pretty comfortable with the first two selections (although Griffith and Bike could be swapped), but then Bay’s second selection is where it really could go anywhere - I think there’s a ton of good forwards available to them from teams that Utah doesn’t get to pick from, so they would probably go for an outside back or maybe a goalkeeper in this round, but that could be Ryanne Brown or Jill Aguilera, or even Laurel Ivory or Maia Pérez. If they were to take Aguilera instead, I would say that Utah probably takes Shae Homes as their second choice and then things generally stay the same from there, and if Bay were to take a goalkeeper from Reign instead of an outside back, they would probably then take Haley Hopkins or maybe Brianna Pinto as their second choice from North Carolina.
Two things worth noting: first, pretty much across the board, if a player that I expect to be the extra protected player doesn’t get that designation, I think they will be taken as the second drafted player. Second, I think the decision not to protect Thembi Kgatlana initially is baffling, unless a) she wanted to leave, or b) the approach was simply to determine protected/unprotected based on how many regular season minutes each player played in 2023 to reduce locker room tensions.
