Is ‘Dear Edward’ Based On A True Story? A Real Plane Crash Inspired The Apple TV+ Series
Apple TV+‘s Dear Edward, a new drama from Friday Night Lights and Parenthood creator Jason Katims, tells a story that seems almost too bizarre to be true. But is it? The 10-episode series, which dropped its first three episodes on February 3, is an adaptation of Ann Napolitano’s 2020 novel of the same name. The series follows a 12-year-old boy named Edward (Colin O’Brien), who became the sole…

Apple TV+'s Dear Edward is expected to air on the streaming platform on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 12.01 am ET, as per CinemaBlend. The series centers on a young man who is the sole survivor of a plane crash and depicts his struggle to cope with the aftermath of the tragic event.

The series stars actor Colin O'Brien in the lead role along with various others portraying important supporting roles. Dear Edward is helmed by noted TV writer and producer Jason Katims and is based on prominent author Ann Napolitano's book of the same name.
What Is Dear Edward About?
Dear Edward follows the aftermath of a deadly plane crash and details how the crash’s sole survivor, 12-year-old Edward, learns to heal and begin living again after the traumatic event that killed his family. It is based on a book by the same name by Ann Napolitano, Napolitano told Library Journal that the inspiration for the novel was reading about Ruben Van Assouw, a ten-year-old who was the sole survivor of a plane crash in 2010. Despite the title, the novel and series don’t only focus on Edward, instead following many of the people grieving following the crash.

Grey’s Anatomy, Pregnancy, Abortion, Birth Control, and A Partner’s Place
SPOILERS UP TO 15X03
There's been a lot of sex and pregnancy on Grey's Anatomy. Like a lot. And for a show which has been so vocal about pretty much everything, there's one BIG issue that has not been covered. Birth control. And it's this lack of direct conversation about contraception which has led me here.
I'm part of some fanpages, cause that's just what you do when a massive part of your identity is knowing all the Grey's and Harry Potter factoids. One of these Grey's pages had a thread wondering about the difference between Owen really wanting a child and being almost unanimously raked over the coals and Callie really wanting children and being celebrated for it. And the answers were so surprising.
First of all I've been mad at Owen since he slept with both his exwives post divorce and then kinda pulled a fast one on Teddy and threw Henry in her face when she called him out. Like he never learns and it's a little crazy how little he still understands about having intimate relationships after 3 engagements and 2 failed marriages. But overall I do mostly enjoy Owen, especially in this Leo storyline, and I'm hoping Teddy's storyline doesn't totally derail this progress.
Essentially the big issue in both of Owen's marriages is he rushes into it with someone who loves him but is emotionally unprepared for a successful marriage. I mean there's some serious traumas throughout both Cristina and Amelia's lives they really should have dealt with before getting married. And then this is when children begin to factor into the equation.
Cristina Yang never wanted a baby or children of any kind. She doesn't want one in season 1. This is where the term "you're my person" comes from. And before this Facebook interaction I didn't think we needed to say Cristina is on birth control. I'm not sure why I had to defend this point, but Cristina has two doctorates. She's a medical doctor. She's doing OB and peds rotations. She is clearly knowledgeable on birth contro. And she's having so much sex over the ten seasons she spends on the show, that there's no way a woman this against having children is not on at least 1 form of birth control. It's just not 100% perfect, but I wished we'd talked about it so that I could prove she was using it.
Her first pregnancy with Burke she schedules the abortion without telling him. They're not an official couple, she's not keeping the baby, he's her superior and wasn't supposed to be banging her in the on-call rooms anyways. It comes down to her and her choice is clear. She never has this abortion due to the pregnancy occurring outside the uterus and rupturing a fallopian tube. It's worth noting that fertility issues are pretty common in the aftermath of this kind of event, which doesn't bother Cristina much since she doesn't want to have a child anyways.
Her second pregnancy occurs years later with Owen. This is my big argument for birth control being in use because a lot of sex happens between these two pregnancies with a bunch of partners. This Cristina again wants an abortion but she tells Owen because he is her husband. Cristina has never been unclear about not wanting children, and even though her husband wants a baby she schedules an abortion. She doesn't go right away because she wants Owen to go with her, but she does go through with it. There's a lot more thought this time, she weighs her options, what her life will be like either way. I love the episode, it's called If/Then.
My issue with Owen in this particular context is he knew when he married Cristina in a rush after the shooting that she didn't want children. And if he didn't, he should have. Maybe I'm an anomaly but I think it's crazy to get married without discussing what your life plans and goals are and a solid prenup, even if you don't have a lot of anything. Something as big as kids is a permanent life change. Someone also said that there's a difference between having a baby with someone and having a baby for someone which Owen kind of asks Cristina to do for him in a last ditch effort to get her to keep the pregnancy. I feel like Owen's say as a husband exists, but it's almost invalidated by having absolutely no regard for what he's asking Cristina to do or sacrifice. Cristina herself says she respects children and thinks they should be born to parents who want them.
I don't see Cristina having an abortion as retroactive birth control, because I'm very certain whatever happened to allow both these pregnancies to happen was accidental, or a fluke. I feel like whatever birth control she has is long lasting, I can't see surgeons practically using a pill because of unpredictable scheduling. The only time I really think it's okay to refer to abortion as retroactive birth control is a situation where it's being used on a very very frequent and consistent basis, which is unrealistically costly for most people and clearly not the case with Cristina.
Amelia and Owen also have some serious issues regarding family planning. Amelia thinks she's pregnant and when she finds out she's not she decides she doesn't want kids after all and essentially leaves Owen without letting him process or discuss. And my issues here are entirely different. If you haven't watched all of Private Practice, like me, here's what we can piece together about Amelia's history. Amelia was pregnant and gave birth, the baby's brain was malformed or unformed and I believe the diagnosis is microcephaly (I'm guessing due to Amelia's addiction problems but I didn't watch the show, also what Zika causes). The baby obviously can't survive without a brain and dies within the hour. This was mentioned in this scene where Amelia tells Owen she's changed her mind. It's also mentioned in the scene where Owen and Amelia kinda get together when she feels Derek's death and he's still in his army uniform and they're both in a heap on the porch at the Dream House. Owen knows about this traumatic thing that happened to her. I think she shuts down and that's incredibly frustrating for him, but I think she also raises a valid point when she says he wants a child, but he wants a perfect "normal" child and that's not guaranteed and she's not willing to go through that again.
This big fight and separation coupled with a massive tumor that's implied to be the reason Amelia and Owen's engagement was like two weeks long ends their marriage.
But they're kinda in this bizarre family unit thanks to Leo and Betty. Post-Germany Owen officially decides he really wants a kid more than any other thing and ends up fostering to adopt baby Leo. We meet Leo's bio mom Betty this very sweet looking girl who just fell victim to the Opioid Crisis and is now a teen mom on the streets in Seattle where it rains so much. So Owen is fostering this baby and Amelia is sponsoring Betty at AA or NA or whatever they go to. And they're all living together, it's kinda rekindled their relationship. It's cute.
Owen's about to be confronted by yet another woman in his life on this issue with Teddy. Teddy, who rightfully kicked Owen out of Germany, is pregnant with his child and has flown to Seattle to let him know. She arrives in Seattle to find Amelia is living in Owen's house with a fifteen year old and a baby. We assume she assumes Betty is a baby sitter and that Leo is their baby. Teddy's only 11 weeks pregnant so we would think if Amelia had been pregnant Owen would have told her during the Germany trip, but I guess it's maybe been long enough since her visit to Seattle during the Meagan thing for a baby to have occurred. We don't know how Owen will react, this is basically all he wanted 11 weeks ago but like a lot has changed in that time. I was liking him finally going out and parenting as an independent person.
A quick stop with the Mcdreamy family, I don't think there's a ton of birth control post post-it just because they're trying to have a baby and then it's clear it's unlikely they'll conceive. They're in a monogamous marriage and un likely to conceive, probably not bothering with birth control. Which pays off when Meredith finally has a successful pregnancy with Bailey and in a twist of extremely good fate, a second pregnancy with Ellis, one last reminder of Derek. I love Zola but Ellis is so cute right now.
Next we'll head to Callie and Arizona. Callie was kind of trying with George too have a baby but he was in love with Izzie and cheating on her so that didn't happen. But Callie definitely wanted children early on. And this comes up with her girlfriend, Arizona who does not want kids. Arizona works with sick children every single day, the fact she wasn't wanting to go through that with her own child is not at all surprising.
Callie and Arizona aren't married. This is exactly the kinds of things people should be talking about now and not after the wedding or pregnancy has already occurred. They kind of agree that they want different things, and break up.
It's after the hospital shooting that Arizona decides if it means she can be with Callie they can have 10 kids. I think the simple fact that they aren't in a legal, long term committed relationship like marriage or common law partners is what makes me think this is okay. The children are entirely hypothetical, this is just what you're supposed to do when trying to figure out how serious a relationship is.
Callie and Arizona break up again because Callie doesn't want to go to Africa and Arizona leaves without her. Totally not related to having children. Callie bangs her BFF Mark and they make a fetus. I'm hoping Callie was on birth control since I doubt there was a condom involved in their unplanned shower sex, but like Callie's been dating a woman where it's not strictly necessary to prevent pregnancy so I would not be confident. Arizona returns to be with Callie who had just found out about the pregnancy. Callie doesn't really consider abortion, she wants a baby, with or without Mark and/or Arizona.
Arizona chooses to join Callie as a coparent to the baby, Mark is onboard, even though this is his second illegitimate child of the series and somewhere out there is his adult child and his grandchild. They have a weird parenting triangle that they really own. It's great. None of them are on the show anymore, but it's implied Callie and Arizona are maybe back together or at least back to being close and raising Sofia in New York.
All of this is to say Grey's has covered a lot of pregnancies, I haven't included Bailey's, Arizona and Meredith's miscarriages, or the like 800 patients seen over the years by Arizona, Addison, Alex, Herman, Carina, etc. Grey's has definitely covered abortion. But life a lot of the issues from the storylines come from not addressing the birth control situations of the characters.
And I don’t think it’s fair to characterize Owen or Callie for these interactions alone. These are emotionally charged situations and characters with vastly different experiences and situations. It’s very worth noting that at the time these storylines are/were unfolding, that What If? episode happens, where Callie and Owen are married with 3 incredibly cute children. That’s the type of family choices they are inclined to make, where Arizona and Amelia are a little slower to come around to that life, though Amelia is currently doing very well and Arizona really has come through as an amazing parent, and to our knowledge Cristina has remained childfree.
It’s all about personal choices, and we need to fairly approach these choices with the idea in mind that those choices may not be the choices the audience might have made, and that life does not go according to plan, especially on a TV drama. Your birth control might fail twice during your childbearing years. It happens.

You Are My Home (2020)
Tumblr media
Woof, this movie is not for the faint of heart.
Alex (Eva Ariel Binder) is 11 years old when ICE comes for her mom Luisa (Brenda Patricia Garza). Alex goes to look for the man her mom trained her to find, but all she finds is his dog, Chico. So Alex and Chico are living on the streets and ask Chloe (Angel Parker) for some water. Chloe may not be the nicest person, but she is caring enough to realize that Alex needs help, so she takes Alex to see her friend Sloane (Alyssa Milano) who is a child and family counselor. Sloane doesn’t want to place Alex at the overcrowded group home right before Christmas, so she convinces Chloe to take Alex. Chloe is skeptical and hates Christmas because she lost her husband and son in a car accident some unidentified years prior.
And because we need a perfect trifecta of trauma for our central cast, in walks Carlos (Cristián de la Fuente). Or rather drives, since he meets Alex when he almost hits her with his truck. Carlos also happens to know Sloane and also happens to hate Christmas because he was always bounced around foster homes as a kid and never had a good one. But Carlos is immediately smitten with Alex and wants to tear down Chloe’s walls. This trio stumbles over each other’s feelings several times because there’s just so much trauma. Chico is the rock of this movie.
I don’t know if I really enjoyed watching this movie because it was depressing in just so many ways, but it did make me feel things. And cry. Multiple times. The story could have stood on its own without it also being Christmas and cause very similar reactions, and I’m also really not sure who I would recommend this to, but I guess it was successful in its endeavor to cause a reaction in the viewer? Overall 3 stars because I’m really not sure.
