Good Evening from the Castle of Monselice (aka Castle of Sept Tours in ADOW)!
"Monselice is the most picturesque town I have seen in Italy. It has an old ruin of a castle upon the hill and thence commands a beautiful and extraordinary view. It lies in the wide plain – a dead level – whereon Ferrara, Bologna, Rovigo, Este, Padua stand and even Venice we could dimly see in the horizon rising with her tiara of proud towers. What a walk and what a wide delightful picture. To Venice 38 miles." Ralph Waldo Emerson Journals (31 May 1833)

Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei
Founded in 1989, the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei (Regional Park of the Euganean Hills) is the very first regional park of Italy’s Veneto Region and the protected home to 81 prehistoric-looking peaks of volcanic origin. Rising randomly above flat, fertile agricultural land, these conical-shaped summits pepper the landscape inside an elliptical perimeter covering approximately 19k hectares…

The almost two-kilometre walls and the backdrop of the Euganean Hills make Montagnana a member of the Club of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy! 🏰
The first fortification that gave life to the town dates back to the time of the barbarian invasions, later rebuilt and implemented in the 14th century to strengthen the defences against the Scaligeri of Verona. ⚔

— Villa Kunkler "Byron", Este (Padua, Italy)
Tumblr media
+ the little room where Percy Shelley wrote many of his Euganean verses, which was destroyed by the Austrian family that purchased the property from Lord Byron.
The Villa, in the province of Padua, Northern Italy, is a former convent rented by Lord Byron in the early 19th century. He only stayed in it once.
In 1817, Byron rented the Villa to the Shelleys, Percy and Mary, where they stayed for a year. Here, Percy wrote the first act of his "Prometheus Unbound" and his poem "Lines Written among the Euganean Hills".
The room where Percy spent most of his time writing, which was separated by the main house, was destroyed by the Kunkler family, after they bought the Villa in the second half of the 19th century. Nowadays, only the floor and a portion of the wall still survive.
I visited the Villa with my English Literature professor, and I completely forgot to post the pictures. It is not possible to visit the Villa if you don't know the family that now owns it — the family lives in the old but remodernated barn of the convent. I must say, it was an emotional visit. Standing in what remains of that little room, imagining Percy writing his poems while he was mourning the loss of his child, while looking at the Este's Castle...it was a lot. I could feel it. I could understand why that place was special. Why Lord Byron first and then the Shelleys chose it. It was an amazing visit.

First, one of the scenic window views during a looong train ride through Austria to the Euganean Hills region near Padua, Italy. And then pizza to the rescue, before collapsing into bed.

Wine and Liquors, Secrets of the Monks of Padua
Wine and Liquors, Secrets of the Monks of Padua
Abbazia Di Praglia-( photo taken from website http://www.praglia.it )
Grey afternoon skies hung low over the countryside surrounding Padua, about a 40-minute drive west of Venice. I had just driven ten kilometers southwest of town to arrive at my destination, the Abbazia Di Praglia, a Benedictine community of monks. Nestled at the feet of the Euganean hills, along an ancient road leading to the…

Eremo di Monte Rua, colli Euganei (Mount Rua Hermitage, Euganean Hills), Veneto, Italy
World-weary? Do you want to get away for some days of peace and tranquillity in a isolated hermitage? Maybe I could have the right solution for you: the Euganean hills, north-east of Italy, are the location of this Camaldolese (monastic community) abbey.
A church surrounded by 14 separated monk cells, that can host pilgrims (sorry, ladies, only men, this is a seclusion convent). If you go there, forget your smartphones, tablets, etc. You’ll live there a life like in the Middle Ages: silence, meditation, prayers, up at dawn, and no nightlife, of course.
