Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed (August 15, 1976) was born in Beshasha, Ethiopia. His father, Ahmed Ali, was a Muslim, and his mother, Tezeta Wolde, a Christian. He joined the rebels fighting the Derg regime who were controlling Ethiopia at the time.

After the Derg was overthrown in 1987 he joined the Ethiopian National Defense Forces and rose in the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel. He served as a peacekeeping officer for the UN in Rwanda (1995-97). He earned a BS in Computer Engineering.

He was made head of the Information Network Security Agency. He was elected to the House of Peoples’ Representatives, the national legislature, to represent his home region. He was awarded an MS in Transformational Leadership and earned a second MA. He was awarded a Ph.D. from Addis Ababa University.

He was appointed to the position of Minister of Science and Technology in the Ethiopian government. In February 2018 he was elected Prime Minister by the House of Peoples’ Representatives. He was the first member of the Oromo ethnic group to hold the position.

He embarked on radical changes in Ethiopia. Many people arrested for political reasons by the former regime were freed. He invited opposition figures in exile to return and encouraged foreign investment to boost economic growth. The first woman president, Sahle-Work Zewde, was appointed and his cabinet was gender-balanced. He lifted restrictions on the media; encouraged a freer press and fostered national unity while celebrating the diversity of Ethiopia’s many ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and religious groups.

He ended the 20-year war with neighboring Eritrea when he accepted the results of a border mediation recommendation and met with the President of Eritrea, Isaias Afwerki.

He is married to a noted Ethiopian gospel singer, Zinash Tayachew. They are Pentecostal Christians and have three daughters and one son. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

What's happening in Tigray?

On November 4, 2020, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed mobilized the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), the Eritrean Defense Forces (EDF), and the Amhara Special Forces to launch a war against the over 7 million people of the region of Tigray, the northernmost region of the Ethiopian federation. Despite the Ethiopian regime’s initial assertions that this is a “domestic law-and-order” operation directed against a Tigrayan political entity, the ongoing brutal involvement of Eritrean government and troops, the reported use of armed drones, the atrocious human rights abuses, and escalating humanitarian catastrophe in Tigray clearly show that this is an all-out war being waged against the people of Tigray. The war has unleashed innumerable atrocities that have devastated Tigray, becoming the world’s deadliest war, destabilizing Ethiopia, and undermining peace and security in the Horn of Africa. There have been verified reports of widespread civilian massacres, extra-judicial executions, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), man-made famine, looting, destruction of health care facilities, and forced displacement of millions of Tigrayans. The picture emerging since the beginning of the war—albeit incomplete due to a telecommunications blockade affecting large swaths of the region—provides a glimpse into the level of devastation in Tigray.

Federal government plans to integrate local defense forces into the police and national army has led to days of violent protests across Ethiopia's northern Amhara region. There were reports of several people being shot at during protests held on Tuesday, which marked the sixth consecutive day of rallies against the government plans.

A resident of Dessie town, one of the areas that witnessed some of the most violent clashes, told DW that Tuesday's unrest had largely receded.

"There was occasional shooting in the morning but I think it was to disperse them [the protesters]. Now the shooting has stopped but roads are still closed," the resident said.

Meanwhile, similar developments were observed in Bahir Dar, the capital city of the Amhara region. Independent Ethiopian analyst Alemnew Mekonnen told DW that the anger observed on Tuesday had subsided, while some major roads remained blocked.

"Now things are calming down. Yesterday, there was a big demonstration in different areas. There was a mess yesterday but now, from all sides, things are calming down," Mekonnen said.

Stability after days of chaos

Mekonnen said that life is gradually returning to normal for residents after a week of instability. "Some workers are back in their offices. Transport services have been started. Things now are in a normal track," he said.

Curfews had been imposed on three major cities of Gondar,Dessie and Debre Birhan to prevent the protests from spiraling out of control. This was reportedly accompanied by an internet blackout, a tactic previously used by the Ethiopian government to quell dissent.

Eshetu Getnet, an eyewitness to the days of violence between Amhara and Oromo militants in the neighboring areas of Ataye and Jile, told DW that the federal defense forces were instrumental in stabilizing the situation.

"It is commendable that the defense is now working fairly," Getnet said.

Amhara left in a vulnerable position?

Ethiopian federal authorities have said that dissolving the Amhara Special Forces (ASF) and other militia groups in Ethiopia's 11 regions and integrating them into the federal army or police will create a strong and unified force in a country, where divisions have resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths over the past 50 years.

But the protesters in Amhara believe the government's plans would leave their state vulnerable to attack from other regions. This comes after the ASF also played a crucial role in the government's war against Tigrayan rebels — a conflict that killed thousands and displaced many more.

The dismantling and integration into the national army of the ASF is part of the peace deal with Tigray, the stipulations of which are currently being implemented by the federal government.

Mekonnen told DW that the violent protests of recent days were largely triggered by a lack of engagement with the regional forces and militia on the government's part, as the details of the peace plan were being hashed out. "As far as I know, there was no discussion between the people and the special forces," he said.

Blen Mamo Diriba, an Ethiopian researcher at the Birkbeck College at the University of London, said that despite this, the recent escalation of tensions was "unnecessary."

"Caution is of high demand to prevent another bloody civil war," she cautioned on Twitter, underscoring the fragility of peace in the region.

Other analysts like Mekonnen have also called for more engagement between the federal government and regional leaders to resolve the situation in Amhara.

"The authorities should discuss with the people, with the special forces, with other stakeholders, so there can be some understanding," Mekonnen told DW.

Opting for mediation

One of the leaders of the Fano militia which fought alongside the federal forces against Tigrayan fighters in the recent war said that the way forward was through mediation.

"We have a cease-fire. It is settled. We will negotiate," the militia leader, who wanted to remain anonymous, told DW.

"Elders and church fathers are also engaged [in resolving the crisis]," he added, highlighting the importance of including local religious leaders in these talks.

Researcher Diriba, however, said that community leaders from the region should primarily focus on convincing the public to refrain from impulsive and violent acts, stressing that resolving the current crisis in Amhara was key to ending the precarious overall security situation in the country.

"Ethiopia must break this vicious cycle of violence. And the government ought to deliver on its duty in a legitimate manner without initiating hostile encounters with notable consequences on the nation's political stability and national security."

Baykar Sells Bayraktar TB2 Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles to Maldives

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has launched the drones acquired for Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) to surveil the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the clock.The unmanned combat aerial vehicles were launched, and President Muizzu signed the order permitting the operation of operations during a ceremony held for the purpose at N. Maafaru airport. Following launching, one of the drones was flown before the President. Two ‘Bayraktar TB2’ drones were acquired under an agreement executed with the Turkish government. By incorporating Baykar’s surveillance drones, efforts have begun to establish a drone base in Noonu atoll Maafaru to operate the military drones and conduct monitoring of the Maldives’ ocean territories. The drone, capable of conducting surgical precision strikes, will be operated by a special team of the MNDF. The Bayraktar TB2 is a medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) capable of remotely controlled or autonomous flight operations. It is manufactured by the Turkish company Baykar Makina Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., primarily for the Turkish Armed Forces. The aircraft are monitored and controlled by an aircrew in a ground control station, including weapons employment. Turkey has used the drone extensively in strikes on Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and People's Protection Units (YPG) targets in Iraq and Syria. Bayraktar drones were later deployed by a number of other nations around the world in various wars, such as by Azerbaijan in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, by the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as by the Ethiopian National Defense Force during the Tigray War.

Lieutenant Yityish “Titi” Aynaw (born June 23, 1991) is an Israeli model, television personality, and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Israel 2013. She is the first Ethiopian Jew and African Israeli to win the contest. As Miss Israel, she represented Israel at the Miss Universe 2013 competition, although she did not place.

She was born in Gondar Province in Ethiopia, to a Jewish family belonging to the Beta Israel community. In Ethiopia, the family was poor but she recalls her childhood being “often happy”. Shortly after her birth, her father died and her mother died as well when she was ten years old. Now an orphan, she and her brother Yellek made Aliyah to Israel to live with their grandparents when she was twelve years old, settling in Netanya.

After arriving in Israel, she struggled with assimilation to Israeli culture and learning to speak Hebrew; she began excelling. She served as class president, competed in track and field, and won a national student filmmaking competition. After graduating from Kfar HaNoar HaDati, she began her mandatory enlistment in the Israel Defense Forces, serving as a lieutenant in the Israeli Military Police Corps. After completing her service, she worked in a clothing store in Netanya. She attended the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya in Herzliya.

She competed as a celebrity contestant on Survivor: Honduras, the seventh season of the Israeli edition of the Survivor franchise.
