used to be afraid to stand up for what i believe in bc i was like… what if people treat me weird, do not trust me, do not let me be involved in the intellectual pursuits i am interested in because of my politics,
but then i watched oppenheimer and learned how that man distanced himself from his politics for his career and so he could do something horrific and just… i don’t want to be that. i don’t want to let myself lose my conscience, my knowledge of what is right and wrong just because i really like physics and engineering.
it’s BAD to be a physicist, to be an engineer, to be whatever without being true to what you know is right and what is wrong, because that is exactly what leads to superweapons and cold wars and watching your creations be responsible for death. science and engineering is not meant to be used for death, it should be used to expand our knowledge of the world, to help people, to feed that natural curiosity of ours.
i never want to lose sight of that.

I feel like all these posts where people splash around a lot of mercury is like my personal version of the people mixing cleaning products in their toilets in an attempt to inadvertently poison themselves. Every time I see one I feel like there's a better world out there somewhere where we're not skiddling in toxic shit for clicks.
Yes, the people filming it are probably experienced in handling mercury and know how to keep themselves safe, but it feels very... unnecessary.
Honestly, the longer I teach science the more I feel like some demonstrations and experiments are just wasteful in terms of materials or disposal and that we should be driving science study at the bottom end to influence a future in science where people have a greater awareness of the macro scale effects of experiments and we see science move as a whole towards mimicking nature.
But then I remember we are now in the phase of "home invasion as TikTok fodder" and I realise my dream may not be one that others share
Using red dye to demonstrate that mercury can't be absorbed by a towel

Light-Absorbing Dye: Advancements in Medical Imaging and Research
The recent breakthrough of a light-absorbing dye that makes the skin of live mice nearly invisible represents a major advancement in both medical imaging and biological research. Here’s a deeper dive into its significance, functionality, and implications: How It Works The dye operates by absorbing specific wavelengths of light, primarily in the near-infrared spectrum. When applied to the skin,…

What I really appreciate about The Talos Principle 2 is that big chunks of its writing genuinely read like they were written by someone who's personally had to justify the discipline of philosophy to a STEM major. "There exists an implicit moral algorithm in the structure of the cosmos, but actually solving that algorithm to determine the correct course of action in any given circumstance a priori would require more computational power than exists in the universe. Thus, as we must when faced with any computationally intractable problem, we fall back on heuristic approaches; these heuristics are called 'ethics'." is a fascinating way of framing it, but then I ask why would you explain it like that, and every possible answer is hilarious.

The reason I can tell that on some bone-deep and fundamental level I am temperamentally a liberal is that, like -
Even if all the wonky neo-trad arguments about the declining marriage rate and the collapse in church attendance/thick inherited community obligations and etc etc were entirely correct on the object level and (to the first approximation) everyone really would be happier and more fulfilled if we ended no-fault divorce and brought back shotgun weddings and arranged marriages -
My incredibly powerful visceral reaction is no, not worth it. The dissolution of all unchosen bonds is a terminal value to be pursued for its own sake. You are a citizen of a the world and a cousin to every living soul, all else is (should be) as fleeting and contingent as your passions and whims. Concessions to reality on this are purely temporary and pragmatic.

Saturn has 83 moons. 63 moons are confirmed and named, and another 20 moons are awaiting confirmation of discovery and official naming.
This is their dynamic visualization while they travel with Saturn through space

New publication with my best title yet! Using CRISPR gene editing as an anchor, I offer reflections on high-tech conversion practices, high-tech medical transition, and the ethics of hype.

Fan art for the Cass Apocalypse Series by @somerandomdudelmao which I have a very normal level of feelings about.
Donnie is definitely going to science his family back from the dead, but in my heart he busts into the afterlife like the Koolaid Man, sucks his family’s ghosts into a vacuum cleaner, and calls it a day.
