The Peninsula Manila offers its lavish promotions this Valentine's Day. Old Manila invites diners to savor a special five-course dinner menu. Indulge in refined delicacies created by Chef de Cuisine Gaël Kubler, such as Toro Tuna Carpaccio, Seared Foie Gras Baklava, Calamansi Mint Sorbet, a main course of either Black Angus Beef Tenderloin or Seabass Papillote, and a ravishing dessert of Raspberry and White Chocolate while being swept away by the sweet sounds of a grand piano enveloped with red rose petals.  Prior to dinner, Old Manila guests will be invited to the 11th floor helipad for a celebratory photo shoot where they can take in the sweeping views of the Makati skyline. had lots of catching up to do at fred's revolucion with a friend of mine. inexpensive selection of locally-made beers along with inexpensive pulutan (that i've yet to try since i was stuffed from a noodle house just before coming here so i can't really attest, though it's all the more reason to come back) is my foolproof way of catching up. thought we had to go inside the establishment written on its address but it was actually right out front, humbly tucked under an old escolta art deco building which makes it easy to spot. it has an open, bare entrance directly beside the sidewalk that allows passersby to stop and skim the place as they please. i suppose it's also in consideration of patrons who smoke (aka me, but i was in a bit of a rush so i didn't get to fully indulge in their, uhh, amenities).

i'd say "fred's revolucion" is aptly named due to the leftist imagery plastered at every corner of the place, perhaps a little too on the nose. as in, i had mao and marx's portraits staring down at me taking a sip of my summer ale. what's funnier is that rage against the machine started playing once we sat down. the thought of a socialist-themed bar being so self-aware of their image like this is so wacky, it's almost offensive. socialism as a motif in itself is just so incredibly... camp. thankfully it had an interesting menu and a quaint, unintimidating ambiance that outweighs its, erm, corniness. will definitely return soon regardless of that. i'll have to check out their branch at cubao x as well!

(after we left, i smoked for a bit while walking to get a tricycle, streets still glossy from the aftermath of the rain. this is my first time in escolta and i've found that it is perfect for a night stroll with a bunch of friends, maybe while slightly inebriated from fred's. ingat lang, syempre.)

I sometimes wonder what's inside the buildings of Escolta, Manila. Maybe the ghosts had caught the people inside, their eyes lingering everywhere. Maybe the person sitting there isn't an actual person—but an empty vessel looking at his phone. Maybe his eyes are as dark as the night skies. Hades might've gotten his soul in the underworld, wandering in the valley of Styx.

Escolta is a mysterious place.

I once saw a movie about a place in Escolta, where a white lady resides. Her screams are eternal. Asking for help to whoever passes by.

The night is peaceful but dangerous.
