This mop brush is the best synthetic one I’ve ever had, I recommend. Mop brushes are usually made from squirrel hair, and it’s rly hard to find a good non-animal one. It’s an Escoda ultimo tendo - 1530 range, size 10. Holds its point so well *chef finger-kiss*.

Acuarela para principiantes: pinceles

Los pinceles influyen en las texturas, degradados y carácter general de tus creaciones en acuarela. Hay tres tipos:

Sintéticos: son rígidos y  brindan mucho control, pero no retienen gran cantidad de agua. Son los más económicos.. 

Naturales: hechos con pelo de animal, son suaves y retienen grandes cantidades de agua, en ocasiones, demasiada. 

Mixto: mezcla entre sintética/natural, bueno para todo uso y, en general, permite retener la cantidad adecuada de agua y color para la mayoría de las pinturas.

Formas

Redondo (round): Como su nombre indica, tienen una punta redondeada y son el tipo más versátil para la pintura con acuarela. Son excelentes para crear, tanto líneas finas como pinceladas anchas. 

Spotter: Pincel redondo cuyas cerdas son mucho más cortas que el de otros pinceles redondos. Las cerdas cortas tienen menos flexibilidad y, por tanto, se puede controlar mejor.

Plano (flat): Pinceles con punta plana y rectangular. Son útiles para crear bordes rectos, lavados y cubrir áreas más grandes rápidamente. Las brochas planas pueden crear tanto pinceladas anchas como líneas finas si se utilizan en su borde.

Bright: Un pincel de cerdas planas, pero más cortas. Generan más resistencia con la superficie, lo que los hace ideales para trazos de color cortos y fuertes.

Filbert: Tienen una punta con forma ovalada que combina las características de las brochas redondas y planas. Se pueden usar tanto para trabajos detallados como para pinceladas más amplias, lo que las hace versátiles para varias técnicas de acuarela.

Abanico (Fan): Tienen cerdas dispuestas en forma de abanico semicircular. Se utilizan para crear texturas, como hierba, follaje o cabello, y para mezclar colores de manera sutil.

Angular (angle): Tienen una punta plana y angulada. Son excelentes para crear líneas nítidas y controladas, y para hacer pinceladas curvas con anchos variables.

Mopa (mop): Tienen una forma grande y redondeada, y están diseñadas para retener mucha agua. Son ideales para crear bordes suaves, mezclar colores y producir lavados grandes.

Rigger: Es un pincel delgado con cerdas largas que llegan a una punta afilada; suele ser más largo que un delineador. Es ideal para crear líneas finas y precisas en trabajos detallados o para agregar toques caligráficos.

Delineador (liner): Pincel corto con punta redonda o plana que es ideal para crear líneas gruesas o finas. Es perfecto para rotular, delinear y rellenar áreas pequeñas. 

Pinceles con depósito: pinceles que en su mango disponen de un depósito que se rellena con agua. Estos pinceles funcionan bien para caligrafía y bocetos, los puedes encontrar con distintas puntas y tamaños de depósito.

Tamaño

Los pinceles, usualmente, vienen numerados. En cuanto mayor sea el número, más ancho será el pincel. Por lo general, los tamaños aumentan de 0 a 10 y luego en intervalos de dos o más hasta llegar a 24, incluso más. Hay que tener en cuenta que los tamaños pueden variar entre marcas.

Recomendaciones

Para los paquetes económicos, puedes comprar juegos de pinceles que venden en las papelerías normales. Estos juegos traen pinceles planos y redondos de distintos tamaños.

Si decides comprar paquetes más pequeños (los que traen 3 o 4 pinceles de un solo tipo) puedes empezar con los redondos, éstos resultan muy flexibles para iniciar a pintar.

Profesional

Hay varios juegos de pinceles en papelerías de arte y hechos por vendedores artesanales por internet que puedes probar. Estos juegos suelen tener mayor calidad que los escolares anteriores. Lo común, sin embargo, es que los pinceles profesionales se compren por pieza. Este tipo de pinceles los encuentras en papelerías de arte, Lumen, Amazon o en tiendas de página propia.

Cuando usas un pincel profesional, la diferencia con los económicos es enorme, pero recuerda que, el mejor pincel es aquel que te hace tan feliz que simplemente quieres llevarlo a todas partes y hasta dormir con él. Busca con qué opciones cuentas al alcance y quizá te lleves una sorpresa.

A true champion has entered the fray: my trusty Winsor & Newton series 7 kolinsky brush, veteran of 12 years of reliable service. It hasn’t seen consistent action, mostly because I am always afraid I’ll wear it out, but it’s been a champ when I need it to be and an honest true friend. It may not form the finest points anymore, but it doesn’t need to. But damn it sure does hold a load of pigment, I always forget when I haven’t used it for a little while.

It’s probably in my best interest to buy a few more out of this line, but it’s best if I can inspect them in person. Faulty sables are everywhere!

Aequis custom coming along more surely now. (For those curious, this one is based on sabino coloration in horses!)

2017 – Water, dagger, Chinese, Escoda, flat

Here is a sketch of some of my paint brushes. The water brush is a Kuretake brand. I should have put “travel” instead of Escoda in the title, as the head of this comes off and fits inside the metal barrel for travelling. The flat brush is also made by Escoda….the other two are non-branded. At the moment, when I don’t use a water brush, the dagger is my favourite. Tue-5-April-2022
