Catherynne M Valente's Deathless is a beautiful Russian fairy-tale set in the Stalinist era, brilliantly conceived and executed. Masha is the youngest of four sisters in Petrograd and, over the years, she has watched the birds come for her sisters. They thump against the windows and fall to the ground and spring up as soldiers and thump again on the door and beg to be wed to the girl in the window.

When the Soviet nationalizes her home and moves 11 other families into it, Masha becomes a girl with 12 mothers, and no bird comes for her, but the house elf, the domovoi, reveals itself to her, and brings her to the Domovoi's Committee, where all 12 families' house-elves have formed a congress to decide how best to run their shared home. With their advice, she finds a witch, who gives her a book and tells her where to find a hairbrush, and these, at last, conjure a husband for her.

But Masha's husband is no soldier: he is Koschei, the Tsar of Life, and he spirits her across the steppes to his kingdom, where he is locked, as always, in fierce battle with his brother, the Tsar of Death. There, Masha becomes a consort and dreams of becoming a queen, but she cannot, not until she has completed the quests of Baba Yaga, the sister of the Tsar of Life, who now styles herself Chairman Yaga.

From this unflowers a lyrical, beautiful story about the war between lovers, the war over life, the beauty and the terror of revolutionary dreams. Valente's prose is transporting, and her instincts for when to draw a section to a close and insert a gap of years or decades for best effect is flawless. This is a book that broods but never stoops to cynicism, a book full of dream-logic and eros. Valente is a major talent, and this is some of her best work.

Questa autrice mi era stata fortemente raccomandata dalla mia amica Azzurra, che mi aveva consigliato di leggerla da tempo. Ti piacerà, aveva detto, ma io ho tentennato e ho tenuto i suoi libri a lungo sul comodino, perchè non sempre sono in vena di un fantasy e non sempre di un fantasy che prende spunto dalle fiabe...non so perchè, ma come spunto non sempre mi attira, dipende..., Ho aspettato l’estate scorsa per leggere Uprooted e ne sono stata piacevolmente sorpresa, poichè mi è piaciuto molto.

L’ho trovato tremendamente innovativo sebbene parta da uno spunto fiabesco che conoscono anche i sassi, ed è una cosa non facile.

E sono felicissima sia stato tradotto e pubblicato anche in italiano, perchè così posso consigliarvelo ancora più volentieri. Compratelo non vene pentirete.

Detto questo quando è uscito il secondo libro della serie (parlo di serie ma in realtà ogni libro è completamente a sè stante, non hanno nulla a che fare l’uno con l’altro se non il fatto che prendono vagamente spunto da fiabe) ho tentennato ancora, anche se di meno. Perchè? Mi chiederte e io vi rispondo non lo so, forse semplicemente non ero in vena di fantasy ya, non saprei, ma ho superato molto presto il tentennamento e l’ho letto tutto d’un fiato o quasi, diciamo che all’inizio parte lento, ma poi prende ritmo.

Trama:  Non voglio svelare troppo della trama. Mi imiterò a dire che in un minuscolo paesino russo che sorge ai margini del grande bosco vive una famiglia ebrea che vive prestando soldi. Il padre di Myriem però è troppo buono per reclamare soldi dai suoi debitori e loro muoiono di fame, perciò un giorno Myriem decide di prendere in mano le redini degli affari e inizia lei a reclamare i soldi dovuti ristabilendo grazie anche all'uso del nome del nonno banchiere, una vita comoda per la sua famiglia, ma i suoi genitori invece di gioire della loro nuova fortuna ed essere orgogliosi di lei per le sue capacità nel ricavare soldi da prestiti e commerci sono invece preoccupati e la mettono in guardia dal gelo che ha fatto entrare nel suo cuore e indurlo davanti alle lacrime dei debitori. E avevano ragione poichè un giorno alla loro porta bussa il gelo in persona, un lord del popolo Staryk, il popolo magico delle nevi che da anni fa razzia fra gli umani in cerca di oro. Il lord ha sentto che Myriem può tramutare ogni cosa in oro e vuole faccia lo stesso per lui....       

Il romanzo è inedito in italiano e mi è piaciuto lievemente meno del primo che ho trovato più semplice e coinvolgente, qui la partenza è più lenta e la storia più contorta perciò mi sono immedesimata di meno, ma la trama è veramente bella, innovativa e complessa. Diciamo che è un misto di fiabe russe, mescolate assieme con un pizzico di miti ebraici....La storia per me è diventata interessante quando entrano in scena Irina e lo Tsar, anche se il mio personaggio preferito è stato Myriem. Comunque vi consiglio anche questo libro se potete leggerlo in inglese. Se avete amato il cartone Frozen o Anastasia, non potrete non amarlo.

So today I was perusing Tumblr, as usual... and I realized that I had been doing far more research lately on Hellenic practices and Gods than I had been on Irish practices and Gods. I had done a lot on the Tuatha de Danann when I first started and had shied away from other cultures (thinking they didn’t belong to me, as I’m as white as white can be). I set up a small altar not really dedicated to anyone... just to start the habit of something not Christian based (raised Southern Baptist... woo).

I researched some Norse practices, but they didn’t really call to me, and then I realized that I was drawn to Brighid, so I did research on Her and decided she was a good place to start now that I was a fresh pagan and all that.

There are a lot of Hellenic pagans on Tumblr, and the more I read about their encounters and their stories, the more curious and drawn to it I got. I had long been searching for a deity who represented butterflies ( as they have been a constant symbol in my life) and found Psyche... but I just was never drawn to her or Eros.

Then I found Iris, and I realized that I had found Her! As the goddess of rainbows, she seemed a decent fit for what I was looking for. But I didn’t want to move away from Brighid yet, and so I dedicated my altar to both of them. That seemed to work well for a while - I’d give them both an offering, I started incorporating khernips and more candles and whatnot... I even have been doing casual hair binding and keeping my hair braided or tied back more often when I go out.

The more I began researching the Theoi, the less of an attachment I began to have with Brighid. I still talked to Her and Iris, but I was starting to become more drawn to other Theoi, too. Like Selene, Athena, Hera, etc. I realized that to really be a Hellenic pagan, I should follow and honor all (or most) of the Theoi, not just Iris, even if I only had an altar to Her.

So I asked my pendulum (dedicated to Iris and Brighid) about it, asking if I should step away from Brighid entirely... and I got a no. Maybe not yet... but I did see that I needed to separate the two. Honor the Theoi, yes, but as the Theoi... not as just Iris and Brighid. So I found a small, unused table and hung up my picture of Her in the hallway, decorating it with her foxes and a wax warmer that currently has patchouli wax in it. I also put my Golden Tarot of the Tsar on the altar... Since Brighid is also a Saint, I guess it seemed fitting.

My main altar still is dedicated to Iris, but now I have room and freedom to make it more Theoi centered. Or maybe dedicated to one or two others who are more specific... but I don’t know which ones yet.

So... I guess we’ll see how things go. I know this was a long post, but I thought I’d share my growth as a Polytheist with you guys. There’s still so much to learn! I have yet to form any UPGs of my own... but I’m excited for what all this leads to! 😊

YOI Historical ABO Slavery AU (bear with me)

They never thought the Russian empire’s ambitions would extend so far east. It started off with small raids on nearby villages and it escalated to the pillaging and kidnapping of civilians. Yuuri remembers Minako, his dance instructor, was one of the first of his village to be spirited away by the Russian empire’s bandits. He had heard horror stories of the slave trade in Russia, whispers from adults when they didn’t think he could hear, and none of them were good.

At thirteen, Yuuri finds himself snatched and carted far away from home with an iron collar around his neck. In Russia, Yuuri is terrified and alone as he is dragged up to the market stage for auction. While some throw in their own bids, one bidder is relentless in their bidding - Minako-sensei. Yuuri is thrilled to see a familiar face in this strange and terrifying new world, but he is confused how Minako is not a slave herself as a collar is absent from her neck.

Minako explains that slaves are common place here. They are property, their status indicated by the collars they wear, however, they are able to buy their independence for a steep price. Minako describes the hardships most slaves go through. As a dancer, she earned more than most slaves as she was tipped for her work while others weren’t paid at all. Even with her little earnings it took her years to pay her collar price. After she liberated herself, she teamed up with a man named Celestino and the two of them started an entertainment troupe of slaves, which has grown tremendously over the years and can even boast about being the best in all of Russia. With their earnings, they would buy slaves at the auction who would work for the troupe in whatever way they could (dancers, jugglers, acrobats, makeup artists, musicians, costume designers, cleanup, etc.) and get a fraction of the earnings plus whatever tips they received. Over time, they would eventually be able to buy their collar price and either choose to stay with the troupe or make a life of their own. At least in this scenario, they would be treated fairly, make an honest living, and have the opportunity to pay off their collar price, a privilege not many slaves had.

Minako takes Yuuri under her wing as a student once more and he quickly climbs through the ranks. At fourteen, he finally presents as an omega. Being a late bloomer, Minako comments how it was fortunate that he hadn’t presented before the auction because omegas, especially rare male omegas, sold for devastatingly high prices. To stave off unwanted attention, Yuuri takes to wearing herb-soaked bandages around his scent glands to neutralize his scent.

At seventeen, Yuuri is one of the best dancers in the troupe and often helps teach and choreograph for tge troupe. He finds himself able to pay off his collar price several times over now that the troupe is a big hit and often hired for extravagant events, however, he puts his earnings towards food, supplies, and buying more slaves for the troupe. As he has no intentions to leave and sees the troupe as family, he doesn’t see the point. One day, he goes to the market with Minako to another slave auction. Even after all this time, it still makes him sick to see human lives traded and bartered for like meat. While trying to shoulder his way through the crowd, he bumps into one of the slaves, a young alpha with blonde hair who snarls something mean to him, thinking he is a noble trying to buy a slave. When the slave is brought up, Yuuri is determined to win his bid. Yurio is at first apprehensive and nervous, thinking his new master bought him solely to break his spirit, but he catches sight of Yuuri’s iron collar and knows that they are the same.

Yurio and the new recruits are brought back to the troupe and there is a celebration held to welcome them in. Seeing Yuuri dance at the celebration, Yurio decides he wants to learn how to dance like him and pay off his collar price that way.

Six years later (Yuuri is 23, Yurio is 15), the troupe is asked to perform at Tsar Viktor Nikiforov’s banquet in honor of the arrival of King JJ. It is by far the most distinguished event they’ve been asked to perform at. Minako suggests that Yuuri perform as the main act, but he declines. His newest routine, Eros, is one of his most ambitious routines yet, but it is a showstopper. They don’t need a showstopper to distract from the royals. Instead, he suggests Yurio for the main act. Over the years, Yurio has become one of their best and perhaps even surpassed Yuuri himself with his passion and drive alone. Yurio is set to perform Eros’s counter piece, Agape, for the banquet.

The night of the banquet, the troupe make their way to the palace. While they are in awe of the rich grandeur, a heavy silence hangs over the troupe as they are reminded by the iron around their necks of what this nation was built on. As they slip past the ballroom to prepare, Yuuri catches a glimpse of the Tsar himself. He has to admit, the alpha is more beautiful than words do him justice, but the coldness in his blue eyes is enough to stop Yuuri’s wandering thoughts and eyes.

Jugglers, fire breathers, dancers, musicians, and acrobats warmup the guests before the main act. Yuuri himself is simply overseeing the troupe in Minako and Celestino’s stead. During the preludes, Yuuri can sense that something is off about Yurio, but the teen is adamant about keeping silent and avoiding him. Finally, it’s Yurio’s turn and the music to Agape fills the air, however, Yuuri can see a difference in Yurio’s performance. He’s not connecting like he usually does. He’s tense, stiff, and almost violent with his movements, a sharp contrast to the angelic music. He knows it’s not his rut or hormones, so Yuuri is left nervous and puzzled. It’s when Yurio throws himself too harshly into a spin that he tumbles. Yurio never falls and hasn’t since he was 13. His lack of movement to get up quickly causes the musicians to die out in question. The Tsar himself turns from his discussion with King JJ in disinterest only to scoff at the fallen dancer. It’s when ice blue eyes meet green that Yurio snaps. It’s like he’s a nine year old child again and all the pent up suffering and rage from being torn away from his home and grandfather spill over. At the end of his tirade, Yurio spits at the Tsar’s feet and the hall finds itself deathly silent. Yuuri is the first to act. He gives hurried instructions, quick changes into a black and red costume, and removes his suppresants. They needed a showstopper to distract the Tsar’s rage and get Yurio out of there alive, so Yuuri will give them one.

Viktor has Yurio’s face in a death drip when the strums of a guitar break the deafening silence of the room. The scent that fills the air is enough to cause Viktor to look up at the dancer in the center of the room. Swallowing down his fear, he dares to send the Tsar a sultry look as if demanding that he never take his eyes off him, and he takes off in a flurry of movements. It’s his most erotic and provocative Eros yet. While distracted, the rest of the troupe sneak Yurio our and quickly spirit him away before anyone notices his absence. At the end of his performance, the crowd roars and Yuuri is completely breathless but relieved Yurio is safe now. As he exits, he dares to look one last time at the Tsar. The look on Viktor’s face is indistinguishable but his eyes are no longer cold; they are burning into him even as he leaves.

The troupe retreat and both Yuuri and Yurio get a tongue lashing from Minako and Celestino - Yurio for losing his head and almost getting himself killed and Yuuri for removing his suppressants and seducing everyone in the room. Despite all this, one of Yuuri’s protégés, Minami, insists on celebrating, especially after one of Yuuri’s best performances yet. With a warning for them to lay low for now, they are dismissed to celebrate with the others.

Their celebration is cut short as the royal caravan pulls in and the Tsar himself steps out. Minako and Celestino are quick to meet him and it is then Viktor makes his intentions clear. He wants to buy Yuuri. The others try to block him from view but Viktor can already smell him in the room as Yuuri has yet to replace his suppressants. Minako and Celestino refuse his offer, stating that they do not sell their own and that Yuuri is seen as a free man among them. He has earned enough to buy his collar price several times over though he chooses to put his earnings towards the troupe instead. Because of this and his role as a teacher to the new slaves, he is essential to the troupe’s income and ability to function. Even when Viktor counters with a monthly payment to cover Yuuri’s loss as well as extra to buy new members, they refuse. Angrily, Viktor demands Yurio instead. Minako and Celestino refuse that as well, but Viktor then clarifies he isn’t going to buy Yurio. What he did was considered treason and is punishable by imprisonment or death. Yuuri is then quick to break through the bodies shielding him from sight and stumbles before the Tsar. He pleads for the Tsar to take him, his price being that he forget about Yurio’s insolence. Despite Yurio’s objections, a deal is struck. Viktor assures he will still pay a monthly amount for Yuuri and that he’ll be back in three days to get him, though that does little to assuage the troupe’s anguish. Yuuri even flinches as the Tsar tries to wipe his tears before Viktor disappears once again into the night with an oddly sorrowful look on his face.

Life and love would never be the same again.

Tag as many writers/artists/etc as you want (fan or original!) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!

1. Bad Apple Explicit, 165 007 words, 60/60 chapters

Yakov knew lectures were meaningless with Victor. He was no longer a figure of authority as far as Victor was concerned. There was only one person Victor really listened to now. Yakov scowled. Yuuri Katsuki. Who gave him the right to barge in and conquer the heart of Russia’s greatest skater like he did? He always thought that Victor would find someone clingy who would be smitten with him and hang on his every word. He never expected it to be the other way around, even if he was as innocent as a child. When Yuuri wasn’t around all Victor talked about was Yuuri. When Yuuri was there everyone else became background detail. Yuuri was no good. A bad influence. Everyone could see that. People walking past him in the street could see that: the boy insisted on wearing leather and looking like a delinquent. Scandal followed him everywhere and he picked fights with everyone. What was Victor doing with him? Apart from the obvious.

An AU were Yuuri is a very sarcastic bad boy and Victor is his very flustered and innocent coach.

Or, Yuri on Ice, if Yuuri Katsuki was a bad boy and Victor was a sweet and innocent living legend of figure skating. I will never stop talking about this fic, because, frankly, I’m very proud of how it turned out. I can’t let this AU go: it’s already spawned a bunch of little AUs where I combined this AU with other AUs and now I’m writing ficlets for this universe to sort of continue from the story, or to write bits that didn’t make it into the story proper.

This is probably not the sort of thing to say about your own writing, but this fic is very funny. It’s also very sarcastic and has a lot more fluff than you might expect.

2. Comes Love Mature, 46 137 words, 13/13 chapters

People in the audience would crane their necks to watch Yuuri sit and calmly sip his drink. He’d raise the glass to his lips and down its contents slowly, as if the gold liquid was honey and not champagne. Or he’d get a cocktail and drink it through a straw in a way that would make the men around him break out into a cold sweat. Then he’d cross his legs and recline in his seat and it didn’t matter what was happening on the stage: every eye in the room was on him. The regulars often said that no one could cross their legs like Eros did. That night he sat in his usual spot and watched the stage with unseeing eyes. Two weeks of someone leaving a bouquet of roses would make anyone curious. He’d always find them in the same spot. There were always seven of them. And they always came without a note. But Yuuri knew they were all from the same person.

A Burlesque AU with Yuuri as a performer and Victor as his admirer.

Another one of those AUs that spawned into a bunch of other ficlets and now has a sequel that just sort of happened, made up of these little ficlets. I found a lot of amazing songs, dance routines and interesting outfits (as well as lingerie sites hahaha) thanks to this AU. I call this one the “Strip and Fluff” fic. No big heart-breaking angst (just hints about it in the past) and lots of fun

3. Victor the Great Teen, 18 157 words, 10/20 chapters

At the age of nine Victor became the Tsar of all the Russias with Lilia as regent. One day he will be the sole ruler of Russia, the man who makes all the decisions and gets to do what he wants, with one exception: he has to marry a woman from a Russian aristocratic family. Except that he falls in love with a boy who is a foreign commoner. Will he risk the throne to be able to marry the one he loves?  

Based loosely on Peter the Great's life (with some tweaks made to history).

A WIP, but I’m very proud of this one nonetheless. Victor as Peter the Great! The tale of a monarch that grew up from a young man into one of the most influential Tsars in the history of his country. I just love historic fiction...

4. Come Fly with Me General, 14 230 words, 8/8 chapters

Phichit and Yuuri work for a charter airline, the CEO of which is Celestino. One day they have to fly legendary pilot Victor Nikiforov who saved 232 passengers by making a miraculous landing. Can Yuuri get a date from him before the plane lands? And what will it lead to? 

Inspired by a BBC Comedy Radio Series (Cabin Pressure) this is the pilot AU where everyone is a pilot for different airlines. Comedy and fluff! I’m proud of how this one turned out.

5. The Devil Wears Gucci + Redemption Wears Gucci Mature, 82 208 and 63 320 words, 21/21 and 15/15 chapters

Yuuri Katsuki graduates from college with one dream: to become a journalist. But journalism jobs are harder to get than anticipated and, to his and everyone else's great surprise, he ends up with a job a million people would kill for: an assistant to the most stylish man alive and the editor of Runway, Victor Nikiforov. Unfortunately, Yuuri himself has no sense of fashion whatsoever, but as it soon turns out that is only the start of his problems.

And the second summary:

Four months after the newspapers explode with the scandalous details of Victor Nikiforov’s affair and break-up with his second assistant, Yuuri Katsuki, an article appears in Fantastic Man, the rival magazine to Victor Nikiforov’s Runway. The article is written by Yuuri Katsuki himself. Is everything really over between them? 

Putting these two together because they’re parts 1 and 2 of the same AU. (If you want to, you can always read one without the other and it should still make sense.)

I don’t know why, but this AU was really hard for me to write.

The first one explores an unhealthy relationship, while in the second one they learn how to have a nice, healthy relationship.

This was my take on The Devil Wears Prada AU and so both fics are full of drama, fashion, angst and fluff.

Catherynne M Valente's Deathless is a beautiful Russian fairy-tale set in the Stalinist era, brilliantly conceived and executed. Masha is the youngest of four sisters in Petrograd and, over the years, she has watched the birds come for her sisters. They thump against the windows and fall to the ground and spring up as soldiers and thump again on the door and beg to be wed to the girl in the window.

When the Soviet nationalizes her home and moves 11 other families into it, Masha becomes a girl with 12 mothers, and no bird comes for her, but the house elf, the domovoi, reveals itself to her, and brings her to the Domovoi's Committee, where all 12 families' house-elves have formed a congress to decide how best to run their shared home. With their advice, she finds a witch, who gives her a book and tells her where to find a hairbrush, and these, at last, conjure a husband for her.

But Masha's husband is no soldier: he is Koschei, the Tsar of Life, and he spirits her across the steppes to his kingdom, where he is locked, as always, in fierce battle with his brother, the Tsar of Death. There, Masha becomes a consort and dreams of becoming a queen, but she cannot, not until she has completed the quests of Baba Yaga, the sister of the Tsar of Life, who now styles herself Chairman Yaga.

From this unflowers a lyrical, beautiful story about the war between lovers, the war over life, the beauty and the terror of revolutionary dreams. Valente's prose is transporting, and her instincts for when to draw a section to a close and insert a gap of years or decades for best effect is flawless. This is a book that broods but never stoops to cynicism, a book full of dream-logic and eros. Valente is a major talent, and this is some of her best work.
