Athener Kaffee-Tagebuch: Omonia

Panathenaic Stadium Passage in Athens, Greece Hidden beneath the Panathenaic Stadium, the world's only stadium built entirely out of marble, is a secret, ancient passage used by ancient gladiators and modern athletes. The passageway, known as the diodos, is a long, vaulted gallery that dates back to antiquity. The Panathenaic Stadium has gone through many iterations through the centuries. Greek statesman Lykourgos first built a simple, limestone racecourse on the site in 330 BC for the first Panathenaic Games, a festival featuring athletic competitions, rituals, and religious ceremonies held in ancient Athens. The Games were held every four years in honor of the Greek goddess Athena. Several centuries later, around 140, Athenian Roman senator Herodes Atticus had the racecourse rebuilt in marble and expanded it to fit 50,000 spectators. Soon after that, by the fall of the Roman Empire in 476, the stadium fell into disuse until the 19th century. Beginning in the 1830s, following Greek independence, archaeological excavations began on the stadium. German-born architect Ernst Ziller carried out later excavations around 1870. The stadium was refurbished and used in the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875, an early attempt to revive the Olympic Games. Then, in 1896, the stadium hosted the first modern Olympics. The subterranean passageway is located on the east side of the ancient stadium. Even before Lykourgos built the first limestone racecourse, ancient masons constructed this passageway leading to the ravine where the stadium would later be built. Known as the "Hole of Fate," ancient oracles used the passage. Spiritual leaders also walked through the passage before holding ritual animal sacrifices in the ravine. In Roman times, gladiators passed through the tunnel before fighting in the marble-clad stadium. After the stadium fell into disuse, European travelers wrote about young Athenian maidens performing magical rites in the derelict passage. Today the tunnel leads to a museum featuring torches and posters from all the modern Olympic Games. Every two years, for the winter and summer Olympic Games, the Olympic torch is lit in Olympia, Greece before making its way to the Panathenaic Stadium for the official handover ceremony where the torch is passed to the official hosting city. Besides the passage, the impressive oval stadium has several interesting details, including curved seating and carved thrones.  Here visitors can walk the stands and run the track where the first modern Olympics occurred.  https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/panathenaic-stadium-passage

από τη ζωή του. The downtown Athens former residence of famed Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller, who designed some of the Greek capital’s greatest 19th century landmarks, will open to the public for the first time on International Museum Day, Tuesday, the Culture Ministry has announced. The neoclassical house at 6 Mavromichali Street was built in 1882 and is now a branch of the Byzantine and Christian Museum after being donated to the Greek state by the family of its last private owner, banker and collector Dionysis Loverdos. It is regarded as a gem of neoclassical urban residential architecture and is dedicated to Loverdos’ significant collection of Byzantine art.

Athens neoclassical trinity: The national Library, University and Academy A greek Trilogy of neo-classical buildings for arts, science, knowledge and wisdom The architectural trilogy of Athens was designed by the danish architects the Hansen brothers. In the center is the University, flanked by the Library and the Academy, all facing Panepistimio avenue and Downtown modern Athens. The Vallianos building to the NW is the second of the trilogy designed by Baron Theophil von Hansen, foundation in 1887. It was he main building of the National Library of Greece from 1903 to 2018. Its collection has 4500 classic greek manuscripts, and a total of 570.000 titles. The Danish architect Christian Hansen, brother of Theophil, was the architect of the Central building of the University of Athens. It was finished in 1841. By the entrance stairs statues of hero of the War of Independence, Count loannis Kapodistrias, and a famous Hellenist, philosopher and participant in the French Revolution, Adamantios Korais (made in 1875 in marble, by Georgios Vroutos) is placed. The center propylae has a fresco with the former king Otto as god with the nine muse protectors, designed by Karl Rahl. The modern Academy of Athens building was finished 1889, after 30 years building. It is considered Theophil von Hansens main work and his first in the trilogy. Like the Library, the building process was executed by Ernst Ziller. Today, most of these buildings are supplanted by larger buildings elsewhere in Athens, but they still play minor roles for administrative and ceremonial purposes. And major roles as architectural and historic gems. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Library_of_Greece #culturalheritage #architecture #neoclassic #library #university #academy #academyofathens #universityofathens #nationallibrary (ved National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQtZLKZJ8i8/?utm_medium=tumblr

Booking flights to Athens would offer you the chance to experience the best and most impressive constructions ever!
The Acropolis.
It is difficult to write an article about the most magnificent constructions in Athens without talking about the Acropolis, it is so emblematic. Positioned on a stony peak over the metropolis, the shrine on the summit of the Acropolis, The Parthenon, was committed to the deity Athena, who was the guardian of the nation, and from whom Athens takes its title. The other numerous memorials which make up the Acropolis consist of the Temple of Athena, Nike, the Erechtheion and the Propylaea.

The Acropolis Museum.
Created by Bernard Tschumi Architects of New York/Paris with Michael Photiadis of Athens as a native assistant architect, the current Acropolis Museum finished during 2009, is situated in the Makryianni region, right in front of the Acropolis. The gallery is held up by nearly 100 solid columns, as the structure was built over the remains of the historic metropolis. The top levels of the gallery are fashioned with glass walls, which carry lots of normal light inside, while the Parthenon Gallery provides magnificent sweeping sights of the Acropolis and the present metropolis of Athens.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre.
The striking, environmentally maintainable city compound of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre was made by Renzo Piano. The National Opera and the National Library moved to the SNFCC during the fall of 2017 and the construction comprises of a 1400-seat opera theatre and also a 400-seat cinema. Completely contemporary and simple, the structure was constructed on a synthetic hill and is encircled by a stunning park and a synthetic lake.

The Neoclassical Trilogy.

Situated in the middle of the metropolis on Panepistimiou Street, these three neoclassical constructions, which consists of early Roman, Renaissance, and Greek components, are the University, the National Library of Greece and the Academy of Athens. These spectacular structures were constructed during the mid the 19th century by two Bavarian designers, Theophil Hansen and Ernst Ziller, who also constructed the Numismatic Museum of Athens. During that period, the neoclassical type was an effort to link contemporary Greece to its traditional history, bringing about magnificent constructions and stylish elements.

The Greek Parliament.
Constructed during 1842, the Greek Parliament, which was the home of the Greek imperial family, is situated on the northern part of the well-known Syntagma courtyard.
