Athener Kaffee-Tagebuch: Krasopoulio tou Kokkora in Psirri

Death in Police Custody in Greece
Independent Investigation Urgently Needed
Tumblr media
The death of Muhammad Kamran Ashiq, a 37-year-old Pakistani man in police custody in Athens on September 21, demands an immediate and thorough independent investigation. Disturbing images circulating online appear to show severe injuries to Ashiq's body, fueling questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a statement on September 26, the police said Ashiq had been arrested a few days earlier in connection with a domestic violence incident. According to the statement, a minor incident occurred between Ashiq and other detainees, and he was immediately moved to another area of the station. Police officers found Ashiq unconscious the morning of September 21, the statement said. It added that a preliminary investigation is underway, including a forensic examination and autopsy, to determine the exact cause of death.
The grassroots Movement United Against Racism and the Fascist Threat (KEERFA) claims that Ashiq was transferred between five different police stations and denied access to his family and lawyer before his death. In 2012, Human Rights Watch documented allegations of police misconduct at Aghios Panteleimonas station, where Ashiq died.
In July, the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture said that during a visit to Greece in 2023, it “again received several credible and consistent allegations of deliberate physical ill-treatment of detained foreign nationals by police officers in certain police stations [Omonia and Kolonos] in Athens.”
These accounts, coupled with the European Court of Human Rights' repeated condemnation of Greece for its failure to address ill-treatment by police, underscore the need for action

Athens, Second Time Around
Want to see my top recommendations for you on what to eat, see, and do in Athens? You're in the right place.
Things to See First things first, you need to visit the must-sees of Athens. Of course, Acropolis is up there, but if you've already conquered it like I have, here's what else there is to do:
Stroll Through the National Gardens
Well, that's right! The national gardens hosts a bunch of animals, trees, and even some ancient ruins. Don't skip the little ponds in the middle, easily accessible through the Sygmou-Fix stop on the Metro.
Tumblr media
pictured: birds at the National Gardens in Athens.
See Some More History
Of course, a trip to Athens is incomplete without a visit to Acropolis. But, have you seen Hadrian’s Arch and the Olympic Stadium, where the first ever modern olympic games were held? Near Hadrian's Arch, you can also check out more ruins (less interesting, imho) and bundle it with a day trip at the National Gardens and Plaka / Anafiotika area.
Tumblr media
Consider also seeing more history from a rooftop! Acropolis is not always enjoyed from its hill, but also from afar, with beautiful lighlight at night. We checked out Olympos Rooftop Bar and Athina street (between Monastraki and Omonia squares, right in the middle point of the street). Great cocktails, and beautiful view. The rooftop cocktail scene is best after 21:00, and over the weekends, if you want to get the full experience.
Tumblr media
pictured: The Acropolis in the distance, lit up on the hill, from Athina street.
See the Makeup of the City Neighborhoods
So you've been to Monastraki, and explored the flea market. Now what? Plaka has nice shops and a chill vibe with lots of cafes and bars. If you have a bit more time, grab a cab or the light rail (tram) to Glyfada, a lovely neighborhood nice boutique stores, cafes, and seaside walk paths. Excellent for summer swims. Make sure to take the tram back to the city center to experience the shifts in the socioeconomic status of the neighborhoods.
Walk the Streets
Visit Ermou street to do some shopping, including from global brands, but also people watching. Lovely chocolate and coffee shops line up areas closer to the Monastraki area. Aiolou hosts more local shops.
Check out Local Narratives & Arts in Museums
Tumblr media
pictured: the front piece of a Greek warship, rocking a mustache.
Visit the National Museum of History, located in the old greek parliament building to discover the local narratives about the country's history. Visit the museum website to check what exhibition is on during your visit. During ours (in late 2024,) the main exhibition was about 1974 Cyprus and the greek refugees (mainly from Turkey) from 1800s to 1922. Being from Izmir (Smyrna in Greek), this was a perspective we were less familiar with and it was an excellent history lesson.
The Museum of Contemporary Art provides a wholly different narrative, bringing local and global artists for exhibitions. Formerly a brewery, the building is also interesting to see. We saw a women's exhibition, which was actually very depressing but interesting nevertheless. We chose to walk to the museum from the Acropolis area (Anafiotika/Plaka), which allowed for us to experience a more residential neighborhood.
Here Come the Food Spot Recommendations!
So almost everything we ate was good (aside from what was listed as "frozen" calamari in the menu). However, some locations absolutely stood out!
Tumblr media
pictured: Picky Brunch & Coffee brunch on a Sunday. Kagianas and hand brewed coffee, and eggs benedict with americano. Delicious!
1. Breakfast highlight: Picky Brunch & Coffee. Located in the corner of two narrow streets, Picky has a lovely garden seating area and even better food. The coffee was so good, I got two servings! The ingredients were fresh, the service was warm and excellent. We got there on a Sunday morning at 10 AM and in only 20 minutes the place was full!
2. Lunch highlight 1: Aris Taverna. Truly the best food we had. Everything was fresh, and the service was excellent. This location opens up at around 2PM and stays open until dinner time (6/7PM). The music, traditional plate breaking, and the clientele -- a mix of tourists and locals -- is what I called 'chaos in greek'. Definitely an experience - a delicious one!
3. Lunch highlight 2: If you just want a quick lunch without worrying about finding a seat, or cost, Bairaktaris is the way to go. If they seat you at the restaurant across the (pedestrian) street, don't worry - it's the same exact location!
Tumblr media
pictured: Zucchini fritters, calamari, and tzaziki at Bariaktaris Taverna.
4. Dinner highlight: Taverna Klimataria. Although the start time for dinner is on the much later side (around 9:30PM!), the music absolutely makes up for it. The night we were there, the local instrument, Bouzouki, was joined by an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, and a contrabass. They played the classic Greek tunes we all know and love - many of them also have their Turkish version! My mom recalled visiting 20 years ago with my father on a business trip. Turns out the spot is going for a long time, with the same concept (and according to my mother, the same decoration)!
Just make sure to call the correct Taverna Klimataria, and make a reservation at least a week ahead of time for large groups, a few days ahead of time for smaller groups. Keep in mind that weekends will have more locals, and weekdays will have more tourists (European and otherwise)! The phone number (as of today) is: +30 21 0321 6629
Tumblr media
pictured: The band at the Taverna Klimataria. Great music!
How to Avoid Protests? Check Out the Movies!
One day we were there, ready to go to the Museum of Archeology, we started to see police in riot gear. Upon asking them what's going on, we soon learned that there was a commemoration for a '73 event in form of protest. We decided to change plans, and given the rainy weather, head to the movies! It was an excellent choice. We had already seen much of Athens and we could use a quick movies break - again, a fun way to see how locals live. We headed over to the Village Cinemas, a chain movie theatre company in Greece. Metro mall had a theatre, accessible easily by metro from Omonia square. Watching Gladiator II (albeit much less impressive than the OG Gladiator,) was fitting for a trip to Greece!
Bonus: Dessert!
Did you think I'd let you go without dessert recommendations? Well yes Lukumades is a local treat, but we have the same exact fried sugary dough in Izmir. So we went to Nancy's Sweet Home and had some of the best dessert and Mastiha ice cream to date! Check out this amazing carrot cake (with a mountain of ice cream) below!

FINDING THE GAP Image taken: During the Omonia Nicosia match on 13 October.  Ash says: “After photographing countless football matches, I’ve learned there’s no such thing as a ‘perfect’ position to shoot from. At Old Trafford, working in the North East and North West corners is great because I’m behind the advertising boards, meaning any stewards have to walk behind me to get past, so they don’t…

Hey! I seem to remember you talking about Greek coffee shops in NYC. I'm at a place in a fic where that seems like an ideal setting for the next scene, but I've only ever been to Greek pizzerias and diners. I was wondering if you remember what the atmosphere was like, or maybe if you had any favorite places I could look up and browse menus? No worries if this is too big an ask!
--
Not at all!
I lived in the area around 2006-2011. I was in Astoria, which is the old Greek neighborhood in Queens. Even by the time I lived there, a lot of the Greek residents were moving further out but still owned the businesses. The waitstaff were often fresh arrivals from the Balkans.
(So, you know, keep in mind that neighborhoods turn over if you're trying to write something set in 2022 that New Yorkers think sounds right. And also, if you want to set it in one of these cafes, your characters are going to Queens specifically.)
One of the cafes I used to frequent had a disco ball and a DJ playing eurodance for Sunday brunch. It had no dance floor. It just looked like a sketchy nightclub at 10 a.m. while serving halloumi sandwiches and iced coffees. Because Astoria.
Many of them had fancy TV subscriptions so they could play no good local soccer from Greece. All of them had a lot of sidewalk tables where people would sit nursing the same frappé for hours. Many had full bars despite mostly being coffee places with sandwiches.
The one all the tourists liked was Omonia. I thought it was absolutely disgusting. One of the desserts I got there had filling that tasted like it was full of tarry chemical sludge.
I'm pretty sure I used to go to Ovelia a lot, but they're more of a restaurant. A lot of the places I remember that are still there are expensive seafood restaurants. I can't figure out what most of the cafes were called, and I think they've closed or moved by now...
And as I type that, I suddenly remember that all of the actually good Greek cafes were not on yelp back when I lived there. We, in fact, chose where to go based on lack of yelp presence...
Here's one I think I went to. They'd have been serving more things like the lountza halloumi sandwich when I was in the neighborhood and fewer of the non-Greek things. The big thing they all served was the classic Greek frappé. Most of them also served some Greek sour cherry soda.

Omonia goalkeeper Francis Uzoho: "It's a dream come true for me. I have dreamed to play here for a long, long time. When I saw the draw and I figured I would be playing at Old Trafford, I prayed to God that I got an opportunity to play." [BT Sport]
Fair play to this guy who had a blinder last night!

Manchester United 2 - 1 Everton
Manchester United come away with the win... somehow. It did not start off well for United as conceded just 5 minutes into the match due to a mistake from Casemiro. Antony luckily tied it up just 10 minutes later. Things did not get any better as Martial had to come off and went straight down the tunnel. There was rumors floating around Twitter that Martial had left warmups clutching his hip. As he walked down the tunnel, he was holding his right hip and limping. He was sadly replaced by [Redacted]. Even more sadly, United’s second goal was scored by [Redacted].
The final minutes of the match were nerve-wracking as Everton had 3 corners back to back to back in stoppage time that included Pickford coming up for it. Luckily the match ended before Everton were able to equalize. This win means United have gone up to 5th just 1 point behind Chelsea.
Next up for United is a Europa League match against Omonia Nicosia at Old Trafford and a Premier League match against Newcastle at Old Trafford.

TOGETHER IN SOLIDARITY
The context is terrible, but the meeting is amazing. After marching under a torrid heat, in the gates of the reception centre of Eleonas formed a huge assembly between refugees, asylums and solidarians. A circle of old and new, of diverse ethnic backgrounds and diverse languages.
After yet another violent police intervention in the center of Athens, with the eviction of more than 100 refugees and asylums in the precarious conditions of the camp of Eleonas, in the south of the city, the support movement acting in solidarity made a demonstration. During several days it was this self- organized group that,  in Victoria Square, in the center of Athens, supported the migrants that met there. The police arrived by dawn, avoiding the public eye and evicted the refugees in a temporary camp and took 12 people to the police headquarters. In reaction, the next day, the past wednesday, June 17th, several dozens made a peaceful demonstration. Eleonas is an industrial area, where the small ‘temporary’ asylum center is located since 2015. It was built for a maximum capacity of 700 people, but much more than double the numbers has been taken for the past years.
In the popular assembly after the demonstration the migrants complained of the precarious conditions of the center. Flaws in the food distribution, sanitary conditions and improper structures, several concerns were shared. Children played idly. We were there together, sited in the shadow of this moment. I felt relief for being there sited, as in the beginning of a new time. But I also know that once these hours are over, each one of us will return to his/her place and this profound injustice will live through...
Tomorrow, saturday, June 20th at 14h in Omonia Square, in the center of Athens there’s a protest in support of the refugees. It was set by different anti- racist and antifascist movements and solidarity platforms. The demonstration is against the anti-refugee policy and politics of the Greek and European States. The joint declaration emphasizes the thousands of evictions announced by the Greek state: “The government announced the eviction of more than 11.000 recognized refugees from their residencies. 2.500 from camps, 600 from hotels and 7.400 from apartments. They plan to throw them in the street, adding thousands to the country homeless. The N. D. government acts accordingly to a previous governmental law from SYRIZA that predicted evictions after 6 months and worsened it, granting eviction just one month after granting asylum”.
The same declaration adds: “We are fighting together, locals and refugees, to live together in peace, locals and refugees in our cities and villages. To build a resistance and solidarity wall so that the evictions plan doesn’t go forward”.

Athener Kaffee-Tagebuch: Omonia
