I feel the main reason that the Ernesto De La Cruz twist worked as opposed to other twist villains is because he already sucked as a character before we knew the truth.
All we knew about Miguel's grandfather is that he was blinded by the starlight, abandoned his wife and daughter and didn't even send them anyway to support themselves. Even in death, he's not visiting his living family or giving the Rivera family the time of day. He's surrounded by adoring fans and having a lavish party, using spirit guides as servants. We are told explicitly that this man is awful!
So when we find out that this is Hector's ex partner who ruined not just his life, but his FAMILY'S life- the twist isn't "Oh my god he's awful!" it's "OH MY GOD! He's worse than I thought!"
#shitpost#shitposting#coco#coco movie#hector rivera#ernesto de la cruz#miguel rivera#also Imelda 100% knows who Ernesto is#so if Ernesto did spin some kind of lie to her about Hector#from her perspective- Hector chased a dream he didn’t even succeed in!#like he abandoned his family for nothing and probably died for nothing too#Imelda is so right to hit Ernesto with a shoe when she finds out it was all one big lie and this man effectively ruined her life

Random Villain headcanon time!
- Whenever someone does something he doesn’t like or make a joke on how he died, Ernesto will say “You’re not invited to my Sunrise Spectacular!” just like little kids will say that you’re not invited to their birthday. (Inspired by a Tiktok)
- Hades lips are not naturally that color, he wears lipstick.
- Maleficent will just loom and stare at you in any dark area she can find. She doesn’t even have a real reason to do so, she just likes to wait and see how long it takes you to notice her.
- Cruella is lactose intolerant.
- Yzma, even after getting herself cured of her cat transformation, will still get the effects of catnip if near her.
- Hans definitely has a pair of gloves for every kind of occasion.

”He’s a living child, Ernesto!”
this specific moment hurts because of the emotion in hectors voice. i wrote it in the video but still.
you can hear hector pleading with ernesto to spare miguel. miguel is still alive, but to add insult to injury, he’s still just a kid. i don’t think hector even cared about getting to the living world at this point, or at the very least it was no longer a priority. his main focus was getting an innocent child back home.
the desperation, the fear, the “please don’t do what i think you are about to do”. this is a big reason why i love hector.

From my mate @swanpit , who is a fabbo artist seriously.
"Thumbelina AU", Hector has been kidnapped by Ernesto, not only for his musical talents, but as a husband! Announcing to a crowd they'll be married without even asking Hector first.
Leaving him trapped on a lily pad while he fetches the preacher, but if you think Hector is gonna take this lieing down, you'd be wrong

Coco: Héctor Rivera - Life vs Death
I noticed this about Héctor is that he is quite exuberant through most of the film, he seemed like a loud character, but I noticed that during his flashbacks of his death that he was more quiet. The only words he said to Ernesto were “I’m going home Ernesto, hate me if you want but my mind is made up” (not to mention he was firm, but not yelling, and had this expression that spoke louder than his words) it’s a short and simple sentence. While Ernesto proposed a toast, Héctor did not say anything. He simply accepted the toast with a smile and drank. Héctor doesn’t even tell Ernesto anything when he’s dying, in pain. Doesn’t ask him for help or any questions, he’s even silent as he’s dying.
Maybe I’m overthinking it but I noticed how much Héctor was quietly thinking while shutting his songbook, accepting his ‘friend’s’ toast. When he’s dying, it’s like his thoughts are in hyperdrive at that moment and yet, he doesn’t say anything.
During the end, the one year epilogue occurs and there is a lack of this ‘loudness’ which we saw during the majority of the film. He gets checked at the gate, sighs, and goes to meet his family, only saying his daughter’s name, and then he doesn’t speak for the rest of it. Heck, he’s not even singing with Miguel, he’s playing the guitar and smiling.
This is either a timing factor for the film (because speaking is a waste of time) or if this is done intentionally to show that, in life, Héctor was a quieter person. In death, he’s suffering, isolated, and rejected by his family: due to that, he’s loud, erratic, and unhealthy almost as if he’s behaving ‘louder’ in order to avoid his internal pain. Then when he’s with his family in the epilogue, he’s quieter again and less erratic. Despite everything happening, the Rivera’s helped Héctor heal. Even though I have personal opinions about Iméctor, it was a sweet ending seeing the healing, forgiveness, and love in the end.
It’s just makes me think about Héctor’s personality and how different it was in life compared to what we see through the majority of the film in the LOTD. He has his basic personality: silly, joyful, inventive, compassionate. I just find it weird that I’ve only seen one other post that noticed his living self’s quietness/calmness but didn’t dive deeper into it.
(Said personal opinion was: I didn’t think it was healthy or realistic for Pixar to shoe-horn a last minute romance when there was- albeit justified- 97 years of anger and resentment due to a misunderstanding on one end. That’s not even mentioning the rest of the Rivera’s. It always rubbed me the wrong way.)
Oh and I would love to hear other people’s opinions and/or disagreements 😊 I want to hear different perspectives, I tend to lack imagination when it comes to perspective.

A lot of people headcanon Héctor as being an orphan, since he tells Miguel that he's never been on any ofrenda, and if he'd had parents or siblings or whatever somebody probably would have put him up at some point.
What if Ernesto was an orphan too? And this is how he and Héctor met - they both grew up together in the same orphanage.
The name "de la Cruz" - "of the cross" - certainly sounds like it could be the name of an orphanage, if it was run by a church. Perhaps Héctor's surname was de la Cruz as well, before he married Imelda and took on her name, having no family name of his own. But Ernesto never married, and the de la Cruz name he kept.
So Ernesto becomes famous, and this is part of the reason why he's so beloved - he built himself up from nothing, with no family or friends to help him, except the childhood friend and music partner who mysteriously disappeared very early in his career. It's a rags-to-riches story; Ernesto succeeded with nothing but his own talent. People thought If he can fulfill his dream with nothing, I can too.
Then Ernesto dies. And after everyone in the Department of Family Reunions stops being so excited about Ernesto arriving and asking for his autograph, they run into a bit of a snag.
The whole point of the Department of Family Reunions is to facilitate family reunions. When someone dies, they notify the family to come reunite with their newest member.
Except Ernesto doesn't have any family. He was left at the orphanage as a baby; he doesn't know anyone's name.
Now, they can't have the great Ernesto de la Cruz leaving the Department of Family Reunions alone! Surely they can find some family for him?
Digging through the records, they find that one Héctor Rivera named Ernesto de la Cruz as being "as good as a brother to me" back when he arrived two decades ago, along with his wife and daughter. Since he's the only lead, they notify him.
Héctor arrives at the Department of Family Reunions, happy to see his friend again, and ready to help Ernesto adjust to the Land of the Dead, although he did have a few questions about the songs.
As you can imagine, this meeting was incredibly awkward for Ernesto.
