Αν υπάρχουν δύο συγγραφείς που αξίζει κανείς να παρακολουθεί για να δει πώς αποτυπώνονται οι πιο κρυφές εγκληματικές στιγμές της Ιστορίας στη λογοτεχνική γραφή ή γιατί αυτή μπορεί να τις αποδίδει με ακόμα μεγαλύτερη ενάργεια από ό,τι τα ιστορικά βιβλία, αυτοί είναι ο Καρίλ Φερέ και ο Ερίκ Βιγιάρ. Με τρόπο παραστατικό και με υπέροχη λογοτεχνική γλώσσα, ο συγγραφέας της «Ημερήσιας Διάταξης» και του «Κονγκό» εστιάζει στο θέμα της αποικιοκρατικής μανίας των ισχυρών, όπως η Γαλλία, για να μιλήσει για τους πολέμους που καμία σχέση δεν είχαν με τους πραγματικούς σκοπούς για τους οποίους διεξήχθησαν. Εν προκειμένω, ο γαλλικός στρατός εισβάλλει στην Ινδοκίνα όχι εξαιτίας των εγκλημάτων εις βάρος του, ούτε καν για το εθνικό συμφέρον, αλλά προασπιζόμενος τα συμφέροντα των μεγάλων εταιρειών −βλέπε Ανώνυμη Εταιρεία Ορυχείων Κασσίτερου−, φτάνοντας σε μια σειρά από παράλογες μάχες, όπως η περίφημη Μάχη του Νιτέν μπιεν Φου, που τελικά οδήγησε στην ήττα και την αποχώρηση της Γαλλίας από την περιοχή. Ξεκινώντας από τη μεγάλη κακοποίηση την οποία υφίσταντο οι εργάτες που δούλευαν για αυτές τις εταιρείες, ο Βιγιάρ εξηγεί πώς αυτοί οι εξαθλιωμένοι ντόπιοι έφτασαν τελικά να στρατολογούνται στους Βιετμίνχ, παίρνοντας τα όπλα ενάντια στην ευρωπαϊκή αποικιοκρατία. Αλλά ως ικανός λογοτέχνης δεν μένει μόνο στα ιστορικά δεδομένα, τα μεγάλα συμφέροντα και τον τρόπο που λειτουργούσαν και λειτουργούν οι θυγατρικές εταιρείες και οι τράπεζες: εισβάλλει με ακρίβεια στις αιτίες των κοινωνικών συγκρούσεων και στους ανθρώπινους τύπους, και με τον αντίστροφο τρόπο του Μπαλζάκ στήνει τη δική του περίτεχνη ανάλυση για την ανθρώπινη φύση, αφουγκράζεται τις επιμέρους αντιδράσεις και ακολουθεί το νήμα που συνδέει τους διασαλευμένους ψυχισμούς με τη συλλογική μανία. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι οι περιγραφές του να κόβουν σαν ξυράφι το ωραίο, λευκό δέρμα των προνομιούχων, φέρνοντας στην επιφάνεια αλήθειες που επαναλαμβάνονται σε διαφορετικές περιοχές του κόσμου, άλλοτε ως τραγωδία και άλλοτε ως φάρσα. Διαβάζεται απνευστί.

Archipelago's distinctively beautiful books are a personal reference point for what books can feel like, look like, do to us.

***Featuring*** three translators working primarily from Spanish/Galician, Greek, and French: Jacob Roger's translation of The Last Days of Terranova by Manuel Rivas from the Galician is particularly suited to the space as the narrator and bookstore owner Vicenzo Fontana contemplates in memory the bookstore a place that is both a refuge from as well as an actor in Argentina's revolutions. Karen Emmerich's co-translation (with Edmund Keeley) of Diaries of Exile by Yannis Ritsos won the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation 2014; of her translation of Good Will Come From the Sea by Christos Ikonomou, Maggie Nelson for NYT Book Reviews writes, "[the first story in the collection] blew my head off with its tender and awful brutality." Mark Polizzotti's translation of the recently-released Kibogo by Rwandan-French author Scholastique Mukasonga has received much praising, but here is perhaps my favorite: "A searing tale of contending gods, religions, and economies in colonial Rwanda [...] Pensive and lyrical; a closely observed story of cultures in collision." Jacob Rogers is a translator of Galician and Spanish. He has received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and the PEN/Heim translation fund. His translations have appeared in The Offing, Arkansas International, Asymptote, Words Without Borders, and Epiphany, among others. His translation of The Last Days of Terranova, by Manuel Rivas, was just released by Archipelago Books.

Karen Emmerich's translations from the Greek include books by Margarita Karapanou, Amanda Michalopoulou, Sophia Nikolaidou, Ersi Sotiropoulos, and Vassilis Vassilikos. Her translation of Miltos Sachtouris for Archipelago was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry and her translation of Yannis Ritsos's Diaries of Exile with Edmund Keeley won the 2014 PEN Literary Award. She teaches at Princeton University.

Mark Polizzotti is a biographer, critic, translator, editor, and poet. In 2016, he received an Award for Literature from the American Academy of Arts & Letters and was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. His translation of Scholastique Mukasonga's Kibogo was shortlisted for the National Book Award in 2022 and his translation of Eric Vuillard’s The War of the Poor was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2021. Polizzotti’s books include Revolution of the Mind: The Life of André Breton; Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisited; a monograph on Luis Buñuel's Los Olvidados; and Sympathy for the Traitor: A Translation Manifesto. He has translated over fifty books from the French, including works by Patrick Modiano, Gustave Flaubert, Marguerite Duras, Raymond Roussel, André Breton, and Jean Echenoz. He directs the publications program at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

We have known since Rousseau's time that inequality has a very old and terrible story, which is not yet over. The War of the Poor tells about a cruel and not well-known episode of the great popular riots.In the 16st century the protest reform movement rises against power and privileges. Quickly, though, he notes a pause, takes a step back, gets urbanized. The villagers, however, the poor of cities, who still put equality in heaven, wonder: ′′ And why not have equality now, here, on earth ;"Here comes a raging struggle between the strong, the compromised Protestants, and the others, the impoverished. Some theologians lead the second. Thomas Muncher is one of them • he has marked the memories with the determination and dynamism of his style. The War of the Poor tells its story. The story of an uprising by speech, which is directly captured by the inventive power of Erik Vuillard's writing.

From the first paragraph of this stormy work of historical fiction, Vuillard rives his reader. Placing the book's action at the time when religious disputes sent nations to war and people to the stake, Vyiar describes the life of a forgotten visionary, both in an impressive project to update a historical event and in a revolutionary preaching, a passionate complaint of inequality.

Erik Vuillard was born in 1968 in Lyon. He studied law, political science and philosophy (with Jacques Derrida). He has published poems and novels and directed two films.He has been honored, among others, with the Franz Hessel Awards (for two books, Congo and La Bataille d ' Occident), Alexandre-Vialatte (for July 14th and for all his work), as well as with Goncourt 2017 for the agenda.The books of the agenda, Congo and July 14 are also released from Polis Publications.The War of the Poor was on the short list of candidates for the International Booker Award.
