🪞 Chapter 8: All That We See or Seem 🪞

She had come this far—she would not falter now. She tested the rope with a firm tug, then wrapped it securely around her wrists before leaning over the edge of the well—wherein its depths the glowing azure orb awaited her. Steady, she told herself, sucking in a breath before lowering herself down.

The moonlit pool shimmered far below, the stone walls slick and ancient, carved with faint, unreadable runes that seemed to whisper in the back of her mind.

The descent was slow at first, her muscles tensed with careful control as she braced her boots against the uneven stone, her hands burning from the friction of the rope. The air grew cooler the further she dropped, thick with damp earth and moss-covered stone.

Then—her foot slipped.

A cry tore from her throat as she lost her grip for a heartbeat, her body jolting violently downward.

Her thigh scraped hard against the jagged stone, pain slicing through her as she clenched her jaw to keep from crying out again. She gritted her teeth, sucking in a sharp breath through her nose. The wound throbbed, warm and wet, but she could not stop now.

Breath ragged, she forced her trembling fingers to tighten around the rope, ignoring the sharp sting of the fresh gash. She pressed her uninjured leg harder against the stone for balance, exhaling shakily before inching downward once more.

Almost there.

The sphere’s glow pulsed, its brilliant azure light reflecting in the rippling abyss.

When she reached the sacred spring, her boots found a narrow ledge just above the surface, barely wide enough to brace herself. She pressed her back against the curved stone, steadying her breath.

The water was deeper than it looked. She would have to reach in—blindly feeling for the sphere beneath the surface.

Aislinn exhaled slowly, then extended her arm into the well.

The cold was instant—shocking.

The icy grip of the water crawled up her skin as she plunged her hand deeper, feeling blindly for the sphere. The water tugged at her, lapping at her wrist like something alive.

Three Sentence Review: This book wasn't groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, but it was fun and entertaining for a book I picked up on a whim at the library. I liked all of the main characters and enjoyed seeing the way their relationships - friendship, romantic, and otherwise - evolved and shifted throughout the story. My only real dislike was the last twist at the very end of the story, which I felt lessened some of the character growth.

Magical herbs in myths, and of course, therefore, in fantasy.

Long have there been stories of mystical flowers that imbue you with properties of: strength, cunning, wisdom, immortality or...bringing you back from the brink of death or just even from death itself, so long as you haven't been dead for too long.

Always those pesky terms and condition, eh?

This is the story of the Sanjivani Booti (or the Sanjivani flower). A magical flower that can save you from illness, injury, and of course, death!

We begin in the Ramayama (or Rama's Journey/The Journey of Rama). When Lakshmana is wounded by Ravana's son and nearly killed, Hanuman seeks sagely advice on what to do. The king of the varnas (monkey people) and monkey god himself is tasked with an adventure himself:

He must venture through what we know as the Himalayas to Mount Meru (think of this as the South Asian Mt. Olympus for those unaware of the mythology and need an easy comp).

There he will find the magical Sanjivani booti (flower) with which Lakshmana can be saved.

However, his quest would not be easy, and upon coming to the valley of flowers and the appropriate mountain area, he couldn't identify the flower in need.

So... he did what any badass god of strength and cunning would do. He LIFTED the whole mountain and yeeted off with it.

Interestingly, the mountain he yoted/yote? Off with left a scar and...the assumed mountain range from the stories in real life..bears a curiously similar scar ;)

With his out of the box thinking, Hanuman was able to get back in time with the flower to save Lakshmana.
