"I wish we had time to do this properly," Captain Hobbes said. "But other duties await."
He lifted a velvet jewelry case from the map table, opened it, and produced a rounded silver cross that dangled from a sky blue ribbon. The face of Charles Darwin was engraved upon its center, the air service wings at its top.
Deryn stared at it and wondered what the Captain was doing with her father's medal, and how it had got so shiny and new.
...
A realization meandered its slow way through Deryn's brain. This wasn't her father's medal. It was hers.
...
Deryn nodded dumbly, trying to gather her thoughts. She was a decorated officer now, pinned with the same medal her father had won. And unlike him, she was still alive. She could still hear her own heart beating, sure enough, like a drummer marching her off to war. Part of her wanted to weep, to let all the nightmares of the last week spill out of her; and another part wanted to shout aloud that this was madness. She was a traitor, a spy, a girl, for heaven's sake.
But somehow she managed to hold the jumble of feelings inside by staring down at the table as hard as she could.
There's something about the Deryn's realization that she earned the same medal her father did that just. It kills me. The first book hints at how deep her grief goes, and we only get to see the extent of it in the first chunk of Behemoth.
There's also something very telling about Deryn's surprise that she's earned this while she's still alive. For a moment she feels almost like this is a death sentence (which, in a way, it is, but we'll get to the mission here shortly)

But all worries ends now with Completely Free Dating. It seemed to reach a tipping point, where there were so many adverts that the user experience was unacceptably poor, and now subscription services such as Netflix appear to be becoming the dominant model for television. What if there were some things you’ve neglected to consider? נערות ליווי ברמת גן Thinking of all the things that can go wrong can stop someone from making sure that things go right. As one of the largest Colombian dating sites, we have thousands of Colombian women signing up everyday interested in meeting someone like you. It can be easy to become isolated when you are in a relationship with someone with OCD. ➛ Videos and photo verification are an excellent way to make your profile more charming and trustworthy! The Old City of Bern is home to quite a few interesting and historic sites, including the Bern Minster, which is the country's tallest cathedral, and the Zytglogge, which houses one of Europe's most famous astronomical clocks. The fees help raise money for the city but also help curb overcrowding in the city of more than 250,000 residents. The Galapagos Islands are famous for being the place where Charles Darwin carried out a lot of his studies to help him form his theory of evolution, and the area is home to an abundance of wildlife. It's the only tropical jungle on the contiguous U.S., and more than one million tourists visit the area each year. However, there's evidence the eruption may have occurred later in the year. Bryce and Addison were introduced to one another in October of that year while hanging out with mutual friends. Tanzania's Serengeti is one of the most famous and oldest ecosystems in the world, and today it's home to thousands of lions and millions of wildebeest.
Cueva de las Manos sits in Argentina and holds some of the oldest works of art ever discovered on Earth. Antarctica is one of the places on Earth everyone should visit, but it's not the easiest place to travel to. You'll have to travel all the way to the middle of China if you want to visit. These limestone Buddhist structures can be found in China and range in size from one inch to almost 60 feet tall. You will find giant Buddha structures all over Asia, and one of the coolest depictions is this 8th-century, 233-foot-tall cliff-face carving sitting on the Dadu River in China. I will roll my eyes so hard at the 120-degree, oat milk macchiato with a dash of sea salt and two pumps of vanilla people. A fully completed profile will help others find you a little easier as well as encourage them to send you a message. This section highlights distinctive factors that help our chosen ones earn the title of the best online dating sites. I can't help but think about what it's doing to their health.
I've never ridden one, but I think they're cool. The four-hour ride winds through tunnels and over valleys in the Alps and is one of the world's best. That’s why we’re one of the best online dating sites for meeting local singles in the US. You can't create a list of important world sites without including Greece, and alongside the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Acropolis is the most famous ancient site in the world. It's nearly impossible to comprehend the list of occupants that lived in Damascus, but at different points, the city was home to the Canaanites, Babylonians, the Macedonian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, the current Syrian Arab Republic and more. This French island features a monastery at the top, stores at the bottom and fishing and farming homes outside the city walls. More than 600 drawings and thousands of engravings dating back 17,000 years cover the walls of the Lascaux Cave in France.

{ I stand amidst summer showers To tell the passing of your years } - Christine
In the Fellows' Garden of Christ's College, there's a patina-covered sundial with these lines engraved. The girl, Christine, is a personification of the college. The white daisies are her (re-)foundress, Lady Margaret Beaufort's beloved flower. The wax seal stamp was supposed to be her college arms. I referenced some photos taken when I was there, though I didn't draw the sundial to scale, as I'd like to place more emphasis on the metal piece.
The 2nd picture is an earlier illustration of her, with the background inspired by the sundial in the college’s First Court. Wisteria blossom near the Master’s Lodge in late spring.
She’s a soft-spoken, gentle girl who cares deeply for people around her (e.g. John, her younger brother & Emma, her neighbour).  Quiet and humble, she doesn’t enjoy being in the spotlight. However, she’s sensitive to the changes in the world around her, and often brings refreshing insights. Being Darwin’s alma mater, she can recognize almost every plant and animal in her gardens by name. Insects seem to be fond of her. Sometimes, when a chapel service is underway, you’ll find her leaning by the stained glass window, listening to the songs and sermons.

Perks
[I’m A Healer, But] Camille gives pointers on where to most effectively strike opponents. Gain +15% critical hit damage bonus when she is in the party.
[Burn Forsooth] Your enemies can hurt you less if they die faster. Once per day, give her a melee weapon and she will upgrade it to have +10 damage per hit.
[Gone To Flowers] In the wasteland, always bring medical supplies with you. Once per day, she can give you 3 stimpaks or 1 Super Stimpak (Luck dependent)
Drops
Encrypted Notes - It has symbols and alphabets combined from different languages. It’s meant for someone. More than one?
Diadem - 10mm SMG with a faster reload time. The receiver is engraved and inlaid with silver.
Doctor’s Bag - A normal doctor’s bag, it drops a collar when used.
Recruitment
She’s treating refugees at Bitter Springs. Pass an [8 PERCEPTION] check pointing out that she doesn’t seem to be from around there. Camille scoffs and introduces herself, saying she’s obviously a Followers volunteer. She can be recruited, as she voluntarily went to the camp, thus she can ‘voluntarily leave as well.’
Failing the Perception check, there is an option to spar with her early every morning. Defeat her or last for a few minutes and then she can be recruited. If she wins, wait for another day.
The Bitter Springs Camp can also be massacred to recruit her. She’ll disappear from the camp if you open fire and once everyone is dead, she can be found chilling by the docks at Callville Bay. She can immediately be recruited.
Camille will not leave regardless of Karma leaning or chosen factions.
Personal Quest
 [Not All In Vein]
Spend enough time with her and new dialogues will unlock. Camille shares her outlook on life. It’s said in a joking tone, but it’s implied that she believes in philosophies such as social darwinism, slavery and eugenics. You can agree or disagree with her. Bring her to Vault 22, Primm, HELIOS One, The Thorn, Cottonwood Cove and the Fort.
Once her dialogue is exhausted, she will openly admit her ideology and share her background.
If the Courier has previously agreed with her, Camille will continue with the prejudiced reasoning. The perk gained is [Burn Forsooth].
If the Courier has disagreed with her, Camille will abandon her old ways and promises to look at life differently. The perk gained is [Gone To Flowers].
However, you can later tell her that you changed your mind, believing the vice versa. Camille will then leave you. If agreed-then disagreed with her, she will be at Legate’s Camp. If disagreed-then agreed with her, she will be at Mormon Fort. Camille can be spoken to, but not recruited.
Other Quests
[Et Tumor Brute?]
She can be asked to operate on Caesar. She will not be available as a companion for a day, but Caesar will survive and things can go as normal.
Alternatively she can be sold to Lucius. This will cause her to approach the Courier, berate them with ‘You could’ve just asked?!’. Camille will flee, shooting the guards. She can be killed at this time, but if she escapes the tent she disappears forever. The quest must be completed using different methods.
[Beyond The Beef]
Camille can be offered to Mortimer. She overhears and refuses, threatening to kill the entire casino. However with 800 caps she can pull some strings to supply the specific type of person Mortimer requires. After three days, speak to Mortimer again and find that the casino has received a man named Fraser for the banquet.
Ending Slides
If her personal quest is not completed, Camille will be known as a bigoted but talented doctor. This caused her to be ostracized by other medics and kicked out of the Followers of the Apocalypse. People still find her for health matters but it’s up to her to decide if they deserve to be treated or not.
If the Courier sides with Legion,
- [Burn Forsooth] is achieved, Camille marries a high ranked Legion officer. Her services as a doctor are only offered to ‘worthy’ Legionnaires. Shockingly, she has a voice in the misogynistic society, giving valuable input to optimize slavery operations. Her first contribution was to direct the military to conquer her old vault, and she personally coordinates the ‘sale and stock’ of her own family.
- [Gone To Flowers] is achieved, she continues to live in Legion controlled land as a travelling doctor. When the Followers were exiled / killed, she figured that the common people would still need medics around. Camille understands how Legion slavers operate, and would occasionally give tips to her patients. She never teams up with anyone anymore, knowing individuals are harder to target.
If the Courier sides with NCR,
- [Burn Forsooth] is achieved, she attempted to run a new slavery ring in the Republic, much underground than the previous Slavers Guild. Camille was successful for a time until a convicted politician exchanges her information for a shorter sentence. Camille was caught, jailed, then executed via hanging.
- [Gone To Flowers] is achieved, Camille starts a clinic in the Mojave. It is very well received with the local community, treating everyone from all walks of life. She wouldn’t charge patients that couldn’t afford it. There are unsettling rumours regarding her past, but nobody’s willing to speak up. Anyone who did open their mouths found that she is as likely to heal you as she is to stab you.
If the Courier sides with House,
- [Burn Forsooth] is achieved, she follows the retreat of the NCR back West, posing as a medic. While the Republic recovers from losing the military campaign, she re-established her old contacts. New Vegas thrives with the old world glory House wanted and Camille finds business in dealing with the Three Families, particularly in the less seemly side of the neon lights. The Omertas is her most loyal client, finding new ‘talents’ in resources she sends over. Camille remains with her old vault’s doctrine, ‘Everything has worth’.
- [Gone To Flowers] is achieved, Camille negotiates with House’s forces to allow the Followers of the Apocalypse to be left alone. Instead, House decided that the faction can occupy the now abandoned NCR Embassy in exchange for loyalty and an imposed medical tax. Many of the Followers, most prominently Julie Farkas had disagreed, believing it goes against their philosophy. The group left Freeside to find a new base of operations in the Mojave. However, a splinter group lead by Camille emerged, settling with House’s proposition knowing that their facilities and funds will be considerably improved.
If the Courier makes New Vegas independent,
- [Burn Forsooth] is achieved, civilians sometimes go missing without a trace. People who disappeared are usually attractive, well-behaved with no enemies and most of all- healthy. Addicts, drunks and troublemakers are left untouched. The local community banded together to investigate and avoid future abductions, but in the end nobody’s convicted. Without a task force capable enough to uncover her new operations, Camille founded a new Slavers Guild underneath Sin City.
- [Gone To Flowers] is achieved, her presence stabilizes the overrun Mormon Fort. Camille became Julie Farkas’ advisor, helping to organize the Followers better. She has the connections and the resolution to keep the faction afloat. Members are encouraged to take in apprentices to grow their numbers. Working side by side for so long, Camille began a relationship with Julie. The Followers of The Apocalypse gained notoriety and respect with the community, cementing their influence.

Archetype Profiles for Nodes (past life information)
Found this very interesting perspective on http://www.radicalvirgo.com/2011/03/astrology-and-past-lives.html
South Node in Aries
Mars conjunct South Node Archetype:  The Warrior
Place:  England
Time:  A.D. 61
I am Bodicea and it has fallen to me to stand up for my tribe.  I have to protect and defend my people and when the invaders are in the way. I have to assert our rights and deal with them.  I live in the moment - it’s the only way to get things done!  None of this past-life nonsense for me.
The past life gift I bring with me is to be my authentic self.
Mars square to the Nodes:
This signifies the need to integrate the warrior aspect harmoniously into life.
North Node in Libra:
The karmic mission is to promote peace, to harmonize with another in close relationship, marriage or business partnership.
Integrated Nodal Axis of Aries and Libra:
This entails knowing when to assert yourself, when to be peaceful, when to be selfish and when to yield.
South Node in Taurus
Venus conjunct South Node
Archetype:  The Artist
Place:  Lemuria
Time: 60,000 BC
I am Croar and I live close to the earth and nature and am inspired by its beauty.  I reflect that love by creating pots and tools, making them as fine as I can using the natural materials around me.  I love my family and our animals but my connection with the Earth is stronger than anything.  I’m a troglodyte, engraving petroglyphs,  and dodging pterodactyls!
The gift I bring with me from my past life is an appreciation of the beauty in nature, and an ability to express this through art forms.
Venus square to the Nodes in Fixed or Mutable Signs:
This creates a greater challenge to express relationship and Art in a wider way which takes into account the needs of a group.
North Node in Scorpio:
My karmic mission is to face the transformative nature of life, including my own fears, and to search for the hero within.
Integrated Nodal Axis of Taurus and Scorpio:
Balance between the material and non-material worlds and to understand when it is time for new beginnings when forms in life are to be sustained and supported and to know when the time is right for endings.
South Node in Gemini
Mercury conjunct South Node
Archetype:  The Teacher
Place:  America
Time: 1920s
I am a born teacher.  My name is Carina and I live in Chicago in the 1920s.  I am stimulated by all the exchange of views going on here, and the inspiring architecture.  My friends discuss the evolutionary theory of Darwin and the new science of Psychology as developed by Sigmund Freud.  Very interesting in theory, but I wouldn’t actually want to go to see an Analyst! I love knowledge, and I love my subject, and that’s what motivates me.
The gift I bring with from this past life is the ability to focus the mind and the mental agility to communicate my knowledge to people.
Mercury square to the Nodes in Mutable Signs:
The drive to communicate can sometimes be taken to extremes or be inappropriate, or result in losing sight of other more instinctual needs.
North Node in Sagittarius:
My karmic mission is to widen my area of consciousness and to explore mentally, if not also physically.
Integrated Nodal Axis of Gemini and Sagittarius:
To master the principle of communication and understand at what point in the continuum information needs to be placed.
South Node in Cancer
Moon conjunct the South Node
Archetype: The Parent
Country: Africa
Time:  1875 A.D.
My name is Ndola.  I live in a roundhouse, as part of a community and tribe.  I am an elder, right now devoted to my grandson, the newest member of our tribe!  I am happy as long as the milk is flowing for our babies.  Mother Earth sustains us, and we collectively honour her, in ritual and ceremony.  We also use her special plants and herbs for our healing.  Whenever I hear our drumbeats, I attune to her rhythms. Our tribe lives and moves as one, trance dancing to the patterns of the bright star Sirius.
The gift I bring with me from my past life is the ability to bring my tribe together.
Moon square to the Nodes:
A need to build constructively the power of nurturing in your life.
North Node in Capricorn:
To understand the need for structures in society, which can serve the needs and emotions of the people.
Integrated Nodal Axis of Cancer and Capricorn:
To balance responsibility and nurturing in a supportive lifestyle for yourself and your loved ones.
South Node in Leo
Sun conjunct South Node
Archetype:  Royalty Place: Egypt
Time: 44 BC
My name is Cleopatra and I am Queen of Egypt.  Don’t you believe me?  I know, you’ve heard it all before.  Everybody wants to be me or thinks they are me!  But I am really the Queen.  Can you not tell I have the taste, and the breeding?  I want to express myself and be creative and joyful, and in order to do that I need to be in control of my world and all the subjects in it.  My Soul Group is working on divine rights (or diva rights).  My leading man Mark Anthony and I, we’ve have had our ups and downs, but you’d expect a little drama in the life of a Queen.
The gift I can bring to my current life is a sense of self-worth (if I can allow it in), keeping the crown jewels of nobility, integrity and self-esteem.
Sun square to the Nodes:
May bring the urge to challenge power in others or in society.  Need to foster positive models of power.
North Node in Aquarius:
Working towards ways of being in groups without dominating but in an empowered way.

My name is Hans and I am a specialist precision watchmaker in Zermatt. People don't try to take the trouble to do a fine job anymore, but here I uphold that tradition and hope it continues in generations to come.  I do not presume to understand the world, but I know my place in it.  I start with a spotless environment--you won’t find any dust in my watches!
The gift I bring with me to this life is the ability to apply myself in my work and attend to detail.  My nervous system remembers the patterns of coordination I used in the past.
Mercury square the Nodal Axis
- A need to be more sensitive and alive to varying demands in teaching roles.
Chiron square the Nodal Axis
- Very individualistic. Can find unusual solutions to problems.

The Soul that rises with us, our life’s Star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting,
And cometh from afar.”
~ William Wordsworth
South Node in Libra
Venus conjunct South Node
Archetype: The Diplomat
Place: Ancient Greece
Time: 421 BC
My name is Demis. I live in Corinth and try to smooth relations between  Athens and Sparta. I can see both their qualities and greatness and feel that I can bring them together.  There are plenty of people practising the art of war, but not enough cultivating the art of peace.  I love justice, too, having been educated in philosophy and law and hope one day that all people will accept the balance it brings. I am proud, too, of the artistic achievements of my country, which I think are outstanding. For beauty is truth and truth beauty, as you can see on this urn that I have before me. Maybe one day a poet will capture that essence.
The gift I bring with me to this life is the ability to bring people together by emphasizing their similarities, and creating harmony.  Deep in my heart, I desire peace.
Venus square the Nodal Axis in Cardinal or Mutable signs
The path of true love does not always run smoothly.  Dedicated to working out karmic relationships and to working problems out peacefully.
North Node in Aries:
To develop individuality without fear or guilt.  To learn self-assertion.
Integrated Nodal Axis of Aries and Libra:
This entails knowing when to assert yourself, when to be peaceful, when to be selfish and when to yield.
South Node in Scorpio
Pluto conjunct South Node Archetype:  The Seafarer
Place: Scandinavia
Time: 1002 A.D. My name is Erik and I am a Viking.  I have a lot of emotional drive and energy. Weaving through our local waters, I just have to look into the fjords to regenerate myself.  I couldn't live my life cut off from that source like some lands we have visited.  I like a challenge and don’t necessarily do things the easy way.  The force of the Norse gods is with me!
The gift I bring with me from this past life is to be unafraid of deep water, whether in nature or in one’s own psyche.
Pluto square to the Nodes:
To see the challenges of life and society and not to shy away from them.  A bit of a revolutionary.
North Node in Taurus:
Working towards a more creative and constructive lifestyle or spiritual path.
Integrated Nodal Axis of Taurus and Scorpio:
Balance between the material and non-material worlds and to understand when it is time for new beginnings, when forms in life are to be sustained and supported, and to know when the time is right for endings.
South Node in Sagittarius
Jupiter conjunct South Node Archetype:  The Explorer
Place: South America
Time:  1836 A.D.
I am Rodriguez and I am an explorer. I have been everywhere, searching for...something.  Last year I came across an ancient temple, pyramid-like, resembling something from Babylon. Hidden away behind thickets it was. I'm a Christian but I've always been fascinated by the sacred, where man communes with God or the gods. Anyway, you'll never believe it (why am I telling you this?) but I ran. I ran right away because I couldn't handle the responsibility!  It's the thrill of the chase, for me, with temples.
The gift I bring with me from this past life is open-mindedness, especially towards other religions.
Jupiter square to the Nodes:
May have the Explorer Archetype in past lives and may need to balance your restlessness in this lifetime.  There may also be residual religious guilt to release.
North Node in Gemini:
The need to focus the mind and develop the Inner Teacher
Integrated Nodal Axis of Gemini and Sagittarius:
To master the principle of communication and understand at what point in the continuum information needs to be placed.
South Node in Capricorn
Saturn conjunct South Node Archetype:  The Politician Place: Russia
Time: 1905 My name is Piotr, and I whisper in the corridors of power. But even the whispering has rules. You speak
only when you are spoken to
by someone above your rank. You only speak that which is necessary and the bare minimum and for a serious purpose.  Every word is weighed carefully.  And information is classified, on a need-to-know basis.  Sssh!  I cannot tell you anything at the moment.  Sometimes you'd think this was an old Trappist monastery.
The gift I bring with me from this past life is discipline, the ability to be measured and work quietly towards my goal.
Saturn square the Nodal Axis:
Being so focused and goal-orientated, there’s a need to remember to keep the heart open.
North Node in Cancer:
Family values and parenting nurtured and the strong sense of the tribe and its needs.
Integrated Nodal Axis for Cancer and Capricorn:
To balance responsibility and nurturing in a supportive lifestyle for yourself and your loved ones.
South Node in Aquarius
Uranus conjunct South Node
Archetype:  The Technician Place: Atlantis
Time: 50,000 B.C.
My name is Barbarella.
I live in Poseidia, and I am androgynous, but that might change in the future.  I use lasers and crystals in my work, and my group is helping to develop a large crystal we call “the Collider", which has great potential.  Tremendous intelligence is networked within the group, and I’m excited by all the new developments.  I certainly know the work we do is powerful… sometimes I do wonder about the consequences but brush any such thoughts aside.  It'll be fine. I'll just press this button and....
The gift I have brought into my current life from Atlantis is future vision and a love of progress and technological advancement.  I have the capacity for dispassionate scientific thought.
Uranus square the Nodal Axis
: Indicates the need to apply knowledge and inner knowing ethically and safely on behalf of groups and society.  There is a desire to shake up the existing order.
North Node in Leo:
The need to develop a stronger relationship with one’s own power, the integration of the personality, and to strengthen self-esteem.
Integration of the Nodal Axis for Leo and Aquarius:

My name is Enui, and I come from Rapa Nui (Easter Island).  Well part of me lives here, but I come from other places, too.
We have a mystical consciousness, moving and shape-shifting in and out of different dimensions.  As a fishing race, sea creatures are sacred to us, especially the Turtle.  I have seven parallel lives, including one on the Pleiades.  I can see you find that hard to believe.  Why limit your consciousness?
The gift I have brought forward into my life is multidimensional consciousness, a way of being which is still in the memory banks for access.

North Node in Virgo:
The karmic mission is to hone your skills, be aware of detail, moving away from scattered thinking and action.

Pat Jones, 1925-2018: "Mother of the Katy Trail" and "Prairie Godmother" of Missouri trails, parks, conservation, and outdoor preservation
Pat Jones, long-time support of trails, parks, and conservation in Missouri, who with her husband Ted Jones was the driving force and major private donor behind the creation of the Katy Trail, passed away at her home in Williamsburg Monday.
Pat Jones, champion of Missouri trails, parks, and conservation, passed away at home Monday
A memorial service is planned later in the spring. Pat was a long-time MoBikeFed Yellow Jersey Club member and one of the most  generous supporters of MoBikeFed--and many other Missouri trails, parks, and conservation-related groups--over the years.
At the 2009 Capitol Day, we presented a very well-deserved LIfetime Achievement Award to Pat and Ted:
Edward "Ted" and Pat Jones have created a towering legacy of contributions to Missouri's trails, parks, and natural spaces.
In 1948, Ted Jones moved to St. Louis to work for his father, Edward D. Jones. Ted started the company's first one-person branch office in Mexico, Missouri. He was managing partner of the firm from 1968 to 1980, when he established the firm's signature small town brokerage system and the firm expanded to 300 branch offices.
In the late 1980s, Ted and Pat donated $2.2 million for Missouri to acquire property and develop a trail along 200 miles of abandoned Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad rail tracks to form what is now the Katy Trail State Park. The trail continues to add miles--most recently 11 miles on the eastern end, a bridge connection to Hermann, Missouri, and a 47-mile connection to the Kansas City area. It all started with Ted and Pat's vision and generosity.
The planned eastern terminus of the Katy Trail is the confluence of the Missouri River and Mississippi River. In 2004 the park at the confluence was named Edward "Ted" and Pat Jones-Confluence Point State Park in their honor.
In 1997, Pat turned her farm into a nature sanctuary by donating it to the Missouri Department of Conservation. The 711-acre Prairie Fork Conservation Area fosters research, community education, and restoration of natural communities. These are just a few examples of Ted and Pat's generosity; specific projects are far too numerous to list. Pat is a generous supporter of the Missouri Rails-to-Trail Foundation, the Missouri Parks Association, the Missouri State Park Foundation, TrailNet, and other key organizations supporting trails, conservation, and state parks in Missouri.
Coverage of Pat's life in the media
Rails to Trails Conservancy:
Pat and her husband, the late Edward Jones, who died in 1990, are known for their important contributions to the conservation movement, including supporting the creation of two epic rail-trails in Missouri: the 240-mile Katy Trail State Park and the developing 144-mile Rock Island Trail.
RTC national Rail-Trails Champions Award:
When an idea to recycle the once-dilapidated rail corridor for recreational purposes began to gain momentum, Edward and Pat helped make the enormous leap from grand vision to concrete reality. They bought 200 miles of the corridor's right-of-way for $2.2 million and immediately donated it to the state to get the trail built.
In a profile in Rails to Trails magazine in 2007, Pat recalled some of the opposition trail supporters faced. "The big opposition was mainly a lot of noise," she said. "Any change makes you worry. But a little sharing goes a long way."
Jefferson City News-Tribune:
Jones was born Hilda P. Young in St. Louis. Her family spent weekends in the Missouri countryside, eventually buying property near Eureka (the Young Conservation Area). She enrolled at the University of Missouri and, in 1950, was the first woman in the state to graduate with a degree in agriculture.
"Whole countries are divided by the ground they're on," she said in the Edward Jones video. . . .
Jones believed in Missouri State Parks and was a regular visitor for the annual Katy Trail Ride. She participated in the Tram Tours on the Katy Trail, including this year's tour in October. She also actively supported other state parks and conservation programs and their initiatives.
"The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will miss Pat and all her love for state parks and nature," DNR Director Carol Comer said. "Through her legacy, all Missourians and our guests can enjoy the very best of Missouri."
She also had a deep connection with Westminster College, said Rob Crouse, director of public relations for the school.
Edward Jones:
Pat and Ted first met in high school on an organized bicycle trip in the Ozarks. Pat graduated from the University of Missouri, College of Agriculture in 1950. That same year, Ted and Pat married and moved to Mr. Jones' family farm in 1954.
The couple shared an intense love of nature and a keen interest in conservation. The two spent much of their married life on the 700-acre farm that Ted's father, Edward Jones Sr., bought in Callaway County, Mo., in the early 1930s. Thanks to Ted and Pat Jones' generosity, the Missouri Conservation Commission now owns the farm, where Pat continued to live and work following the death of her husband in 1990.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
Pat Jones with First Lady Georganne Nixon in 2009
They contributed to other park programs, too, so much so that a park near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers north of St. Louis is named after them — the Edward "Ted" and Pat Jones Confluence Point State Park.
Columbia Missourian:
In 1997, Jones — who graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in soil science in 1950 and received an honorary degree from MU in 2017 — donated 771 acres of land to the Missouri Department of Conservation for the development of what is now Prairie Fork Conservation Area, a space dedicated to children’s conservation education and water, soil and wildlife research. It forged a relationship between the department, the MU School of Natural Resources and the Missouri Prairie Foundation, according to the release.
“Pat loved to see all the kids and activities at Prairie Fork, which she got to see every day out her back door, because she witnessed the next generation getting excited about exploring the land just like she did as a kid,” Sara Parker Pauley, director of the Missouri Department of Conservation, said in the release.
“She always greeted the kids with a loud ‘Learn, Get Dirty, and Have Fun’ which is engraved on the wall at Prairie Fork in honor of her incredible conservation legacy,” Pauley said.
Columbia Tribune:
“Without them, Katy Trail State Park would not have been possible,” Gov. Mike Parson said in the news release.
Former Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman, a good friend of Jones, said they talked regularly and met for lunch a few times a year as they grew older.
“I constantly think of her as the model of what people should be like,” Hindman said. “Obviously, she was believed to have a lot of money because of Ted and the Edward Jones company, a nationwide highly successful business that he really led. But she lived an absolutely modest lifestyle and she was, like her husband, an original thinker.”
Ted Jones also recognized the potential to turn a 225-mile stretch of abandoned railroad into a magnificent state park. He was a generous donor and force behind the creation of Missouri's Katy Trail, which is now a segment of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and the American Discovery Trail, and was inducted into the national Rail-Trail Hall of Fame. Because of his efforts, the trail now attracts 400,000 hikers, cyclists and joggers each year.
Pat Jones, who People magazine dubbed the "Prairie Godmother," enjoyed tracking the Missouri Conservation Commission's progress toward the long-term goal of restoring hundreds of acres of native prairie. The farm, along with its numerous examples of outstanding conservation practices, is the destination of many grade-school field trips, a source of great pleasure for Pat Jones.
Missouri Department of Natural Resources:
The Pat Jones Bicycle Pedestrian Bridge across the Missouri River in Jefferson City and the picnic shelter at the North Jefferson Trailhead are also named to honor Pat Jones.
“The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will miss Pat and all her love for state parks and nature,” said Department Director Carol Comer. “Through her legacy, all Missourians and our guests can enjoy the very best of Missouri. Pat, you will be dearly missed.”

Air Mail Stamps: Made to Fly
I rather like Air Mail stamps of the world, used on airmail covers (of course), which logically is why they were issued. The sight of the familiar blue and red bordered airmail envelope emits a subliminal message, evoking images of distant, beckoning, exotic places. For me, at least.
Collecting Air Mail stamps has been a popular pursuit in Philately, particularly since the 1930s, by which time most countries had issued a stamp, or series, primarily dedicated for use on the rapidly developing airmail services. The more adventurous included covers carried on inaugural airmail service flights (“First Flight Covers”), which may or may not have been franked specifically with “Air Mail” stamps.
Over the years I’ve met a number of Air Mail stamp enthusiasts, although strangely none who collect those same stamps used on commercial cover. That’s a pity, for this is a rich field for specialisation. Airmail rates varied depending upon such factors as distance, and the rates were often volatile, rising or decreasing with fluctuations in demand, for example. Material on the whole is reasonably available, although it can take some effort to track down. But, hey, that’s the fun in such collecting, and often when material is found it can be pleasantly affordable; comparing relative scarcity with corresponding stamps mint or used (off cover).
This month I’ll feature commercial covers bearing Air Mail stamps from a variety of countries. I’ve selected series’ which have a number of stamps; most lend themselves admirably to goals such as development in to a one-frame or greater exhibit. Ten of the twelve subjects are to Australian destinations, to add a little familiarity.
For 2009, why not surprise yourself and take up the challenge of collecting one or more subjects in this field? You may well end up with a collection which is a best-of-kind, without having to go broke in the process.
Figure 1. Ancient meets modern in this stylish series of 21 from Egypt
Egypt between 1933 and 1938 produced an ambitious bicoloured series of Air Mail stamps, many in vibrant colours. Figure 1 provides an indication of how a usage collection featuring these stamps would be a joy to behold. This 23 June 1937 use from Simon Arzt, a department store in Port Said, with it’s own Post Office (!), bears the 90m, 5m and 40m, making up the 135m airmail rate to Australia. Destined for Inglewood (Qld), it arrived at Brisbane 1 July, which indicates it was on board Imperial Airways’ service IE 559.
Figure 2. Switzerland: Art Deco design elements for the inaugural Air Mail stamps
Commencing in 1923, Switzerland produced a series of 13 Air Mail stamps. Unmistakable elements of Art Deco predominate for the stamps in this series; the “Pilot” featuring in the 35c and 40c would not be out of place in Fritz Lang’s classic Metropolis (1927). Figure 2 has the 45c, 50c, 65c, and regular issue 30c, making up the 1f 90 second weight step airmail rate (5-10gms) to Australia. It left Lugano 27 April 1936, and endorsed “Londres – Karachi”, would have been conveyed on Imperial Airways’ service IE 335 to Karachi, thereafter by QANTAS to Darwin, arriving Melbourne 10 May.
Figure 3. Skill of the Engraver to the fore in Czechoslovakia’s superb 1930 series
Featuring a variety of aircraft, the Czech set of eight Air Mail stamps issued in 1930 (a 30h followed in 1939), is certain to delight lovers’ of recess-printed stamps. Figure 3 provides an indication of what to expect, containing as it does not less than half of the original set. Here a 5k, 10k, 2k and 50h make the 17k 50 third weight step airmail rate (10-15gms) to Australia, departing Bratislava for Sydney on 14 January 1939. There is no arrival datestamp on reverse; I speculate that this article was on Imperial Airways’ service SE 75, which arrived at Sydney 25 January.
Figure 4. Sudan’s handsome series of 12 probably for the more ambitious
Another fine recess-printed series, Sudan’s 1932-37 Air Mail stamps, featuring Statue of General Gordon, is probably not for everyone. Material is not easy to come by, certainly not addressed to Australia. Figure 4 is; a 20 January 1932 cover from Khartoum to Canterbury (Melbourne). The 5m, 10m and 2p paid the 2p 15 rate for airmail to Cairo only, thereafter entering the surface service to Australia. Imperial Airways’ IE 148 would have provided the airmail service leg.
Figure 5. Unusual design, vibrant colours from Bulgaria
Designs for Air Mail stamps can be imaginative; they were often intended to convey mail to other countries, and national pride no doubt brought out the best in designers. The Bulgarian Air Mail set of eleven issued between 1931 and 1938 probably resembles no others. Figure 5 is an 11 November 1935 item from the remarkable correspondence to Henry B. Smith, a Wool Broker in Melbourne. That material came on the market only in the ‘nineties, prior to which prewar airmail to Australia from Bulgaria, and various other former Eastern Bloc countries, was very scarce indeed. Airmail items to other countries, for this series and others featured, are generally more readily available than those to Australasia. The 1 l, 30 l, 20 l and 2 l x2 pay the 55 l airmail rate to Australia. This likely was the second weight step airmail rate (5-10gms); I have a 35 l, presumably first weight step. Sent via Athens, the arrival in Melbourne was on 3 December.
Figure 6. Exotic designs from Thailand; we would expect no less
Figure 6 contains seven of the eight stamps of Thailand’s 1925-37 Air Mail series, featuring the “Garuda” Bird, suggesting the recipient may have been a stamp collector. However, the postage rate of 1b 10 is correct for 60s airmail + 50s registration fee, so we’ll give this the benefit of the doubt as being “commercial” use. From Bangkok to Gympie (Qld) on 17 April 1931, this article was carried on the KLM service to Batavia (Dutch East Indies), arriving 25 April, thereafter entering the surface mail, received at Brisbane 23 May.
Figure 7. Striking Air Mail series’ from German Third Reich era
The 1934 Air Mail stamps of Germany comprised two designs. The 5pf to 100pf (nine values) featured the striking Golden Eagle, Globe and Swastika, the 2m and 3m Count Zeppelin and Airship Graf Zeppelin. Very Third Reich, and Figure 7 is very representative of the era; the stamps were used in Austria during Germany’s annexation (“Anschluss”) of that country. This 12 August 1938 registered airmail Vienna to Sydney bears 10pf, 100pf x2, 25pf, and 2m. The aggregate franking of 5m 35 was for 45gms airmail to Australia (4m 05) + registration fee (1m 30).
Figure 8. From Yugoslavia’s very fine 1937 Air Mail series
Airmail to Australia from Yugoslavia prior to WWII is rather scarce. That changed after the war with the huge migration intake. Figure 8 is an early wartime airmail of 11 March 1940 from Belgrade to Sydney. This was carried by Imperial Airways, from a late service for IA became BOAC on 1 April 1940. From the 1937 Air Mail set of eight (two further denominations appeared in 1940) we have the 50p, 5d and 20d, a total of 25d 50, which I believe represented 21d 50 airmail + 4d registration fee. Here and elsewhere, some of the rate comments are deduced from material I have access to; I apologise in advance if I have misinterpreted.
Figure 9. QANTAS, BOAC, Japan Airlines convergence?
Figure 9 is one of the two items featured which are not destined for Australia. This is close enough, being from QANTAS office in Japan, to that in Singapore! An 8 November 1952 solo use of the 160y stamp from the 1952-62 Air Mail set of eleven (with slightly revised designs from the 1951-52 series), this paid the fourth weight step airmail rate (40y x4). Interestingly, the Air Mail label was that of BOAC, suggesting this QANTAS inter-office item was carried by the opposition. The Aeroplane over Mt. Tate subject stamp presumably features a Japan Airlines plane; JAL was formed in August 1951, and the original series featuring this stamp appeared in September 1951. An unusual convergence of three airlines in one item, if I’m correct.
Figure 10. Art Deco interpretation of “Mercury” from CuraÇao
More reminiscent of a character from a 1930s Flash Gordon novel, the very individual designs of the stamps in Figure 10 are in fact a representation of the more widely known “Mercury”. The series of 13 stamps in this series seldom made their way to Australia; mail communication between the Netherlands Antilles and Australia has always been minimal. This 12 August 1941 item from Willemstad to Brewer Racket Co (maker of tennis, squash, badminton racquets) in suburban Melbourne, bears the 45c, 1g 40 and 60c stamps from the set, and was censored both in country of origin, and upon arrival in Melbourne. The rate of 2g 45 paid for full airmail service by KLM.
Figure 11. “Pegasus” an infrequent visitor to Australasia
One of the great designs in Air mail stamps must surely be that issued by Uruguay in 1929. I’ve not been able to locate an example of this stamp on an item to Australasia, and we’ll have to settle for one to Germany, shown as Figure 11. The pair of 30c denomination should be adequate to confirm the wonderful design. Sent from Montevideo to Berlin via France, the rate of 62c was for the basic airmail service. No less than 36 stamps (!), plus subsequent surcharges, make up this series. Latin America is the king of Air Mail stamp series’, and material is generally plentiful and inexpensive. Three years ago I decided to build a portfolio of pre-1940 Latin American commercial airmail covers, exclusively by selecting attractive items on eBay and placing a maximum bid of US$10. This proved to be a successful formula, and winnings began to flow in. I couldn’t believe how such attractive, exhibitable items could be so readily obtained, and for such a low average entry price, which ended up closer to US$6 than to US$10. After a year or so I focused on unrelated acquisitions, returning only recently to this former activity, in order to see if market sentiment had changed. To the extent that material remained reasonably plentiful, nothing had changed, but the average entry price by my reckoning had increased to around US$15, from US$6 two/three years earlier. I can’t help but think that as supply becomes absorbed – it is finite after all – the average entry price for this material will continue to increase. Latin American commercial airmail material is one of my most highly recommended collecting fields.
Figure 12. Festooned U.S. Air Mail stamps to lubricate one’s taste
We’ll complete this introduction to Air Mail stamps with the U.S., which has issued it’s fair share of such stamps. They’re quite attractive, and reasonably available. The differential between used on cover, and off cover, at least in my Scott Specialized Catalogue for 2000, suggests that Air Mail stamps used on commercial cover are one of the great bargains in World Philately. For example, in my catalogue, the 1918 16c is 35c used, and 55c used on cover, the 24c is 35c used, 75c on cover. I doubt if this anomaly is a reality in the market place, but I’ll make a point of finding out. I’ll buy such items on cover all day long at such bargain prices! Figure 12 contains three different later issues from two series’, the 10c and 20c (x7) from the 1926-27 set of three, and the 50c (x4) from the 1935-37 set, also of three. A 30 May 1941 use from New Orleans to Brisbane, the aggregate $3.50 postage paid the fifth weight step airmail rate (2-2½ozs.) for the “China Clipper” service. Censoring during wartime took place upon arrival at Brisbane.
Air Mail stamps can have a lot going for them in the visual stakes. Would you agree? When on commercial postal articles, they can take that attribute to dizzying heights (pun unintended). Good luck with your Philately and in general for ’09.
