Victory Run (TG-16 Mini)
The fifth and final release in 1987 for the PC Engine was Victory Run. I just realized that 60% of the console's 1987 titles are on this mini-console, with the others involving potentially tricky licensing. Neat. I also just realized that unlike many companies launching new consoles, NEC and Hudson didn't have much in the way of sports games during the early months. Victory Run is the closest thing to it, so any parents who wanted to enjoy some golf or baseball would have to wait.
Victory Run is an interesting game. It's one of the earlier examples of the Japanese game industry's fascination with the Paris-Dakar Rally from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. Its colorful visuals, upbeat music, and horizon-chasing gameplay might make you think you're in for an arcade-style driving game in the vein of OutRun. This would be a grievous miscalculation on the part of the player. Victory Run is absolutely brutal, and makes an earnest effort at trying to capture the feeling of the incredible endurance run that awaited drivers in the Paris-Dakar.
The race as a whole is broken up into legs, each of which has a target time you're meant to hit. You have some bonus time to spare, but the pool carries over from leg to leg. Finish quicker than expected and you'll add to that pool. Come in slower and you'll reduce it. The target times are tight. If you crash, you're going to be eating into that bonus time with gusto. The race is long, and any mistakes you make early on are going to leave you in a very precarious position towards the end.
Your car also takes damage to its various parts based on how you drive. At the start of the game you can take twenty spare parts total with you. There are five different parts, and you'll want to distribute your selections based on how you drive. Between legs, you can choose to use one of these parts to replace your existing one. Your call how far you want to push things, but if a part blows out completely during a race you're going to be in a lot of trouble. Don't skimp on your tires.
The game controls well but the low-to-the-road perspective can make it hard to see what's coming. The road frequently twists and turns, and it's full of other vehicles. Victory Run is tough. If you get everything right and all goes to plan, it's not a ridiculously long game. But those are serious "ifs", and in practice you'll be lucky to pull out a win even with reasonably good driving. That lends this game a fair amount of replay value, and while I don't think this is a particularly great racer by 16-bit standards, I think it's a good meal for those 1987 PC Engine owners. Really, not even that bad by the standards of the game's North American launch in 1989.
As part of the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine Mini line-up, I think it serves a few purposes. The console didn't have a ton of racers, so it's nice to have any decent ones Konami could scare up. It's also, I think, one of the better games from the console's first year. If you're using this mini-console to do a chronological journey, it's a pleasant albeit challenging stop.

Awwh the surprise reward of the newest Tataru quest is a portrait of Gaius and his dead children + the remaining one.
Meowdred who despises the ex-imperialist piece of shit and still haven't forgiven him and ALSO hates him like a twisted reflection:
#meowdred surana#he blamed the umbral calamity on Gaius#and he blamed the suffering of Eorzea in its aftermath on Gaius#and he hated Gaius for caring so much about his children yet his philosophies and teachings were so terminal & virulent#that it engineered the environment the creed and the circumstances for his children's willful tragedies#he looked at gaius and feared what he might one day become. had mordred himself not left so much destruction in his own wake?#he didn't regret having to destroy emet-selch and elidibus and the ascians to protect the world as it was now but wondered to this day#who in the future would misconstrue his efforts & victories to suit their own xenophobia and oppression and greed#he despised the idea and the testament of the person gaius was than the man himself#the man himself which mordred knew and acknowledged exist was just a man like any other#so one day he will be able to put aside the wounds. but not today#i like to think about mordred as someone who's scarred and weary but had outgrown those scar tissues rather than someone who's healed#not because he doesn't deserve to but because he's still only got the one life#and the injuries that cut so deep they reforged him and defined his background will always be there

Re-reading the MAG 160 transcript and I want to bite Eliasā head off so bad
#grrr the way he says OUR victory and the world WE have made makes me want to strangle him so bad#he fuckin scientifically engineered the statement to be as painful as possible on jon#this is based on how i interpret the scene so keep that in mind#because heās really sharing the blame with jon as much as possible here#really drilling it into his head that while yes elias was the guy behind the scheme JON was the one to carry it out#and made multiple CHOICES (though w/o knowing the full picture) to carry it out#Jon has a guilt complex the size of a fucking train#itās possible that he would already have had similar thoughts even w/o Elias saying them out loud#but the fact that he DOES say them out loud I think would really cement it into Jonās mind#now that itās been spoken and jon has FELT it in his bones thereās no chance he WOULDNāT ponder over it#as if he even WANTED to do at all#it makes me so mad like SKELSVDNJFLSKNDVF#JONAH SHUT YOUR TRAP HE NEVER WANTED ANY OF THIS#and then a clip from an earlier episode plays in my brain of āno you didnāt want any of this but you chose thisā#like UGHHHU#he made this statement to be as painful as possible is my stance#he made sure to hit a lot of points that he KNEW would hurt#hits on the web/mr. spiderās mark implying jon was set for doom at the start#strengthens that it was Jonās choice to be a monster#that heās the one who caused all the misfortunes that surround him#and then rubs it in THAT HE COULD HAVE BEEN FREE FROM ALL THIS IF JONAH (and the Web) HADNāT SPECIFICALLY CHOSEN *HIM*#it was not destiny but SHEER FUCKING ROTTEN LUCK#AGHHHHH#anyway *cough*#tma#MAG 160#abellrambles

Might be strange sounding, but the card reveals/banlists always come in 2 different perspectives for me, irrelevant of which banlist I'm playing under; because I write fics, I have to contend with the banlist at times (a majority of the time it's based on the sort of half-tcg, half-ocg Master Duel banlist with Anime Specific Additions.)
So when new cards come out I have to judge them not only by what I can figure out from their effects and traits (combined with what's currently meta, and if there's anything that wants to play the new cards, whilst being mindful of banlist differences), I also have the joy of internally discussing the value of a deck when its in a fictional setting.
I don't think anyone normally thinks about if a deck's theme is strong enough to tie a character to it, let alone if a deck's theme is too strong and tying a character to it is like Akihiko Sanada's obsession with protein in anything that isn't mainline persona (Like the Q games.)
Also makes engines less appealing.
#marwospeaking#Mikan plays Xyz-based Harpies. Manon plays Ashened. and Risa plays Memento trying to pretend its not a fusion deck#are these good decks? maybe only Memento. Do they fit the characters? surprisingly yes#Mikan's kind of like. pretty to look at. but not fun to interact with in any way. Manon wants to set her cell on fire (out of frustration)#and Risa's memory is so spotty she has zero idea who she is besides very basic details like her name (and how to play Memento main deck)#If you asked me to build someone who plays Despia. I could. If you asked me to build someone who plays Snake Eye. I could not.#Primoredial? sure! White Woods? maybe! Raizeol? ...sure. great archetype for engineers/mechanics?#Goblin Biker? Sure! Sky Striker? ehhh maybe? Fiendsmith? No. Yubel? ... only they play themself I'm fairly certain#These aren't really inspiring decks (the current meta ones I mean) in a way you'd really want for a character deck#(Kashtira wasn't either. admittedly)#They're small collections of cards that play half their deck as staples. what the hell kind of character can you build from that??#Before anyone asks. Mimighoul I could absolutely make a character for (in the same vein as Flip Turner). same with poor Tistina#Fiendsmith's theme is obviously strong. Its just one of Those kinds of decks where either everything else is powercrept. or it feels..#.. too small of a deck to do anything interesting with going pure with a few techs for the character#(some characters don't play pure. but when they do; those decks get combined support. Ojama Armed Dragon for example)#(Odd-eyes Performapal Magician and Onomats are the two others I can think of that do this. Yusei's pile does not count)#Another issue is when you have a set victor for a duel. but one character has a deck that's a calibre above what the victor will be using..#.. like Trickstar vs Cyberse Pile (might be multiple calibres). It becomes either not very fun or a very ass-pull looking victory#worse if it's a plot point duel with a lot of weight. even worse when it's too early on for 'oh they've grown as a duellist'#I'm rambling. anyway point is Secret Card Analysis Type: Fic Writer That Writes Duels

ive been thinking abt a helio/stratos swap recently and mostly just like. the reality of a vace+rex+nomi childhood friends trio in this au is so. man
#me realizing i think vace would be essentially the pov chara for this au: MAN#stratos kids in this concept is really fun i am soooo obsessed with military sol#mama flulu in a military heavy au is so......... man#flulu who's met geranium and is doing a little better than her previous military days but she's still this decorated soldier right#and sol wants soooo bad to make her proud. so they work really hard.#not realizing flulu really hates seeing them do this. but she knows its to impress her#so it's this awful feedback loop where sol is trying so so hard to make her proud and she is!#but also they can tell she's kind of reluctant to praise them so theyre like#well obviously i just need to work harder then :/ and end up becoming one of the best younger soldiers lol#them and marz are kind of always at odds for control over the social circle i htink#they tend to win tho just bc of like...... their clout etc. but marz sometimes gets little victories just bc. U Kno.#cal is like the weird outcast on this ship lol#i think him and sol were closer as kids but his utter pacifism leaves him completely on the outside u kno#dys is a bit of an outsider too but he's more of like a#doesnt play well with others outsider rather than a Freak outsider#he does well enough in training etc that ppl leave him alone mostly i htink#he and sol are definitely Weirdly Obsessed With Each Other#also military ship engineer tang like...... lmao#to prevent gvf would be either like. actively sabotaging her i think. its a whole thing#god. thinking thinking thinking#teenexo stuff#helio sol versus military stratos sol are different concepts lol#helio sol is like. pressure from mom makes them shut down so they kind of suck#versus military stratos sol where mom doesnt have hte pressure and instead is like#someone theyre trying so hard to impress themself#so they work way harder and better#its a whole thing. fun concept#thinking constantly always

^^ "coming to the conclusion that positioning the "can people enjoy things that would be immoral IRL in their fiction" debate as a proship v anti fandom debate is akin to pretending that "should we have the death penalty" is a discussion that only matters in Death Note discourse"
not proshipper not anti but a secret third thing (person who has a career in the media and, through covering legislative politics, has watched "associating with problematic fiction or entertainment is an indicator of moral degeneracy" rapidly become a mainstream GOP position that they are encoding in legislation to target the queer community under the guise of protecting children, thus coming to the conclusion that positioning the "can people enjoy things that would be immoral IRL in their fiction" debate as a proship v anti fandom debate is akin to pretending that "should we have the death penalty" is a discussion that only matters in Death Note discourse ā the extent and manner to which fiction affects reality is an issue that is immediately relevant to today's US politics, and to summarize my opinions on the matter in fandom terms would be to diminish the ways this debate is affecting america Right The Fuck Now. and i have stopped taking "this person is bad for shipping the wrong anime thing and being horny about it" in any sort of good faith ever since I saw it literally used as part of a GOP smear campaign against a transgender state legislator in an attempt to defend the right from backlash after they used their supermajority in the Montana house to prevent her from speaking on the floor. Anyway I think everyone on this site, especially Americans, could benefit from ceasing to think in proship v anti vocabulary and instead developing coherent political positions on the nature of fiction that do not directly align with current fascist political tactics)
#oof lots of tags ahead#social#fandom discourse#it's rly hard to be concise about why anti-fandom stuff hits different from other types of fandom wank in short tags or a brief comment#this is not your regular āis luke skywalker evil for blowing up a space stationā or āis inuyasha better off with kikyo or kagomeā#these conversations can be fun or contentious but ultimately have no bearing on rl. meanwhile current discourse leans towards-#āshould dark fiction be allowed to exist?ā āshould we maintain accepting spaces for mature fans?ā āis fiction always literal?ā#āis this person Dangerous IRL for the stories they engage with?ā āshould we kick them out? All Of Them? From Everywhere?ā#2010ās conservatism in online spaces was & still is convincing. it regurgitates all conservative talking points that have Always Worked#eg. video games make people violent. deviant sexualities/orientations/identities are dangerous to families. limit childrens' resources.#except this time make it Fandom. except this time the characters and stories are all Literal. they're all Real. not narratives but copies.#and when the motivation for a point is virtue signaling and reactionary moralism and scandalized emotions over critical thinking-#-It Will Always Work. especially bc anyone who saw the writing on the wall (bc this isn't the first time this happened) got shut down Quick#bc āyou just care too much.ā it's not an issue about censorship- āit's anime.ā it's not shoving members out of queer spaces-#(at a time where for a lot of us in intolerant environments FANDOM WAS OUR QUEER SPACE and for plenty STILL IS)#-āit's just the internetā where nothing that happens has any bearing on rl culture or consequence. which is a sentiment that's aged well#all of it tying in with big entities like twitter & google purposefully directing engines to prioritize revenue via clicks/viewership-#-and constantly pushing users to see & engage with contentious threads (you can look up āTristan Harris - US Senate June 25 2019ā on YT)#that fucked up users' perception of How To Address Conflict 101 bc fans speaking out against anti stuff ig got conflated with Moral Callout#instead of āhey please don't do x bc of abc reasonsā-disagreeing now meant you had to FIGHT and gun for some big mic-drop moment of Victory#so fewer spoke up when all this snowballed bc it got harder to just SAY that a ship isn't real and a trope is only narrative#fast forward to today. people of all ages have been soaking in this culture and take it to other facets of their lives#Should There Be Kink At Pride & other queer events? Is my discomfort/lack of understanding equivalent to something outright attacking me?#Did You Know That People Use This Website For Sex Work or other adult-focused services? or even just a creative outlet? should it be banned#IS MY DISCOMFORT SOMETHING I SHOULD ADDRESS AND MANAGE? Or do Others bear the responsibility of catering their worlds around it?

Not tontake away from Max talent, because he's insane, but brocedes taking eachother out in Spain 2016 was absolutely great for him. People immediately knew he had winners potential and where willing to extend more grace for his crimes. Had he come p3, idk if it would be the same
I think an essential part of sporting success is to know when to capitalise on others' mistakes to make your own success and hashtag good for him for that! A win is a win is a win no matter what! It was a momentous occasion! but also I do agree that Max having the credit as "youngest race winner ever" did wonder for his career early on even when he was very inconsistent. Like āproven race winnerā >>>>> āpromising raw talentā any day of the week. Would 2018 RBR have been that quick to rally behind Max over Daniel without that credit to his name? idk! Interesting scenario to consider!
but yeah the revisionism does annoy me, especially when it comes from media & insiders who should know better. I actually really appreciated that on the same weeekend as Kimi Ant getting announced, Nico Rosberg was saying on comms that Max at that age drove like a lunatic, and like, that's factual! and doesn't take away from his accomplishments! I know sports fandom as a whole is prone to recency bias, but if you're going to compare get your facts straight. See also: how testing restrictions has affected the preparation of rookies over the years, when we bring up, e.g. Lewis's rookie season. If Lewis was coming up now, he would not have the same level of preparation. That does not take away from the insane feat of Lewis almost winning a wdc as a rookie
anyway. I hope Kimi Antonelli or whatever won't be measured against the current narrative of what Max was as a new-ish driver and the expectations that come with it. Because even irl teenage Max wouldn't measure up to what many people now seem to believe Max was.
#my hottest take re: max is that I'm never going to consider him in any goat conversation#until we've gotten enough proof that he CAN race wheel to wheel cleanly#which he's historically been just okay at & then during the last couple of seasons it hardly mattered#I think RBR mid era would be good for his racecraft in the same way as mclaren in the early 2010s really honed Lewis's skills#or how some of Seb's best racing came when he was giving Lewis serious trouble during the Merc dominance era#this is unrelated to the main point but in general I am allergic to the implications that winning == this person is the best#sports victories aren't on merit! it's a combination of skills and luck and so many things. especially in F1 <- engineering competition#(which is why it annoys me when ppl write off Seb's career after Red Bull when he was SO good at Ferrari but that's a whole other thing)#wins ā skills necessarily!#which is why I can look at 2016/2017/2018 Max and say wow he was so impressing in parts but also so fucking uneven#and it's not a criticism it's a factual statement!#and it makes me annoyed that rookies coming up now are being compared to standards that are completely overhauled by revisionism#ANYWAY. as a fan of racecraft I look forward to seeing max in 2026 after he spends a good full season having to put more effort in his w2w#elle asks
