Napoleon's Spanish War
“Atlas histórico de España”, Enrique Martínez Ruiz, Consuelo Maqueda Abreu, Emilio de Diego, Ediciones Istmo, 2016
by cartesdhistoire
For Napoleon, the Iberian Peninsula was a weak link in the southern flank of the continental blockade. In 1807, he sent Junot to occupy Portugal, where smuggling of British products was developing on a large scale. The presence of French garrisons on Spanish territory exacerbated the dynastic crisis which undermined power, torn between King Charles IV, Prime Minister Godoy and Infante Ferdinand. Napoleon deposes the Bourbons, exiled in France and replaced by Joseph Bonaparte. A popular riot broke out in Madrid on May 2, 1808, followed by fierce repression on the 3rd. The country was set ablaze, resistance was organized by politico-military juntas. French troops were defeated at Bailén, in Andalusia, in July 1808. Napoleon had to strip the eastern front to undertake costly reconquest operations.
In the years that followed, Spain became a gigantic battlefield. Spanish resistance is composite; a strong Catholic component gave the conflict the appearance of a crusade, while the politicians were divided between dynastic loyalty to the “legitimate” king, Ferdinand VII, and liberal aspirations which were expressed in the Constitution of Cádiz of 1812. The supporters of “Intruder king”, the “josefinos”, are isolated and only provide a semblance of authority under the cover of powerful military governors, Soult in the south, Suchet in the north. The French and their allies know how to play on the divisions of their adversaries, the liberals wary of the bands of partisans often supervised by priests and fanatically devoted to Ferdinand, whose absolutist tendencies are a mystery to no one.
It was the English expeditionary force commanded by Lord Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, hostile to the people's war, which ultimately decided the balance of power. In June 1813, the French army was crushed in Vitoria and had to evacuate the peninsula.

Upcoming series: Ena
In September, the filming of Ena began, a biographical series that will focus on the life of Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, queen of Spain through her marriage to Alfonso XIII between May 31, 1906 and April 14, 1931, after being the monarchy deposed later by the proclamation of the Second Republic. Great-grandmother of the current king Philip VI of Spain, of whom she was godmother at his baptism. Throughout six chapters, the series will tell the life of Victoria Eugenie and at the same time offer a portrait of a time that changed the world, the first half of the 20th century, from 1905 to 1945. Born on October 24, 1887 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Ena was the daughter of Henry of Battenberg and Princess Beatrice, youngest daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her godmother was Eugenia de Montijo, empress consort of France as Napoleón III's wife. The name of the series comes from what her friends and family called her since she was little, Ena.
The fiction is based on the novel of the same name by Pilar Eyre. Javier Olivares, who was behind the acclaimed Isabel and El Ministerio del Tiempo, will be the showrunner and plot manager for Ena. In addition to Olivares, the script is written by Isa Sánchez, Daniel Corpas and Pablo Lara Toledo. The series will be directed entirely by women: Anaïs Pareto, director of the series as a whole, in addition to four episodes, and Estel Díaz, who will direct two episodes.
“Ena is the portrait of historical moments that seem distant but are not so far away, because without them we would not understand the times we live in now,” Olivares declares in the press release sent by TVE. The writer and screenwriter remembers that Victoria Eugenie “fought to be happy in a bitter time, in which she witnessed two world wars, a civil war and a great pandemic, the tortuously called Spanish flu.”
For Pilar Eyre, author of the novel, she was "an extraordinary woman: cultured, supportive, liberal-minded, modern and very loyal." And she is excited because "finally all Spaniards can know" the story of a "misunderstood" woman. in their time, which they will always consider foreign." It is a fiction co-produced by RTVE with Ena La Serie AIE, La Cometa TV and Zona App. José Pastor, director of Film and Fiction at RTVE, has pointed out that "it is a "RTVE is proud to be able to portray this interesting historical character, from the point of view of two women directors and with Javier Olivares as showrunner, in one of its best series."
The Spanish actress of Anglo-Danish descent Kimberly Tell will play Ena and Joan Amargós will play Alfonso XIII. For her part, Elvira Mínguez will play Maria Christina von Habsburg-Lothringen, mother of Alfonso XIII. The cast is completed by Lucía Guerrero (Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha), Raúl Mérida (Alfonso of Orleans and Bourbon), Juan Gea (Álvaro Figueroa y Torres, Count of Romanones), María Morales (María del Carmen Angoloti y Mesa, Duchess of Victoria), Pedro Mari Sánchez (Rodrigo de Saavedra y Vinent, Marquis of Villalobar), Luisa Gavasa (Eugenia de Montijo) and Joaquín Notario (José de Saavedra y Salamanca, Marquis of Viana)
Mariano Peña will play Miguel Primo de Rivera; Jaume Madaula will play the anarchist Mateo Morral, author of the attack committed at the royal wedding; Tomás del Estal will be Emilio María de Torres y González-Arnáu, and Ángel Ruiz will once again give life to Federico García Lorca, a character he already played in El Ministerio del Tiempo, among others.
The series will be filmed entirely in natural exteriors and interiors, like the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia), the Palace of Santoña (Madrid), the Palace of Fernán Núñez (Madrid), the Fort of San Francisco (Guadalajara) and the Magdalena Palace (Santander), built in 1911 by the City Council as a tribute to the monarchs and where Ena spent a good part of her summers in Spain, accompanied by the Royal Family. Filming for the series will continue until the end of December.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, the Magdalena Palace is going to be an important location during the series as a summer palace, the main filming location in Gran Hotel, and in that series Ena appeared in the episode 3×13, played by Aída Filx.
Apart from that, are we getting an Olivaresverse (XD)? Most likely not, and it's just references about his previous works as a showrunner, but there are connections between Isabel, Emdt and Ena: Michelle Jenner starring Isabel as Isabella I of Castile, then appearing in a couple of scenes in Emdt episode 1×04 and being an important figure in the lore as the foundress of the ministry (& Eusebio Poncela playing as Cisneros in both series, and also he played Cisneros in the film La Corona Partida and the Carlos Rey Emperador series); Alfonso XIII is a descendant of Isabella I of Castile; Ángel Ruiz appeard as Lorca in Emdt in 4 episodes and now he is on Ena playing as Lorca again, we don't know yet how much screentime he will get or which will his role be (secondary character most likely), but it's great to see more about him!
Okay so my scramble eggs of toughts about the new spiderverse spoiler warning!! for everything i think!
okay so where to start
man i love animation, i love this medium as a whole i love it so so much, and omg the animation on these films just constantly keeps out doing itself over and over it was just so goood!!! some ofmy absolute favorite scenes have to be the entirety of gwen's world, THOSE SCENES WITH THE SPOT THAT WHERE IN BLACK AND WHITE HOLLY SHIT, THE SPIDER CHASE SCENE THE FISGHT SCENES, good lord just every scene in this movie was so creative and vibrant and beautiful, even scenes that where calm like when miles talks to his mom, my god it was so beautiful, the framing the colors it was all so well used like when miles gets to the world with no spiderman and there's just something so oddly eerie about the color palette of the world but you don't really notice at first glance and then it just goes and becomes moore and more off as the scene progresses until its just purples and reds and greens BROTHER THATS SO RAD!! and then how each spider person had a very distinct artstyle, like how pavitr's world was so vibrant and cool!! and how hobbie was animated as a collage and so was the portal, and ooomg the s´pot was just so delightful to see it was so creative and cool!!!
speaking of the spot the characters where all so fucking goood!!! and absolutely amazing to watch!!1 i was having so much fun and the movie is so funny but is like Such a good valance of goofyness and drama like at one moment i was laughing and the next i was in complete shock and it didn't fell like a complete tonal whiplash like HOW DO U DO THAT??? when stacy is trans right? like we all know that right? AND OMG THE VOICES okay so i watched the latam spanish dub right! AND OOMG JOSE LUIS RIVERA AS MIGUEL O'HARA *chefs kiss* KILLED IT, NO QUE KILLED IT ABSOLUTELY MURDERED IT!!! like i think this is his first major role and man he slayed, alondra hidalgo as gwen was also sooo good!! emilio treviño as miles as always so awesome! miguel angel ruiz (peter b) is just always delightful in anything he is, and man everyone was so good!! and i was wondering how they where gonna do hobbie's odd accent thing and they just made him use a bunch of mexicanismos which was awesome
and like to characters again, i fucking hated miguel o'hara but man wasn't he so cool to see and so scary it was absolutely bonkers bananas and holly shit and dude pavitr was so fun and hobbie was so fun and seeing peter b was awesome tho man i was almos yelling at the screen for him and gwen to fuckjing do something when miguel was charging at miles, and the spider woman was so so cool too and GOD THIS MOVIE WAS SO COOL!!! LIKE WHO TOUGH OF THIS WHO THINKS OF MAKING SOMETHING SO EVIL AND SO BEAUTIFUL AND FUCK WHO WHY OMG, i love animation, this movie just completely pushed and broke its boundaries ins insane
just whenever i start to think that is all pointless for me to do art and start question why am i even doing this, a movie like this comes out and i fall in love with this media all over again is insane
These photos aren't of the actual event. They're of a model made by a guy called Emilio Ruiz del Río for the 1979 film Operación Ogro. There's an interesting article in Spanish about it.
A hard-hitting, realistic look at the undercover police world with a bitter taste of the cases that they work. Jason Patric and Ray Liotia play the parts of two Detroit police offers tasked with bringing the killers of a fellow undercover officer to justice. Dark, gritty and overwhelming, Narc doesn’t sugarcoat law enforcement but somehow keeps the experience real without turning the opinion of the viewer against the officers, who often bend the rules as far as they can without going over the edge. Excellent drama, along with some very realistic dialog and some top-notch acting brings this title to the forefront of its niche. I guarantee you won’t figure out “who done it” until the very end. Definitely not a date night movie, or something to watch while the kids are around, but something perfect for a rainy afternoon flick with the guys.
