When Pakikisama Turns Toxic: Bullying and Conformity in Filipino Families
Introduction: What is "Pakikisama"?
Pakikisama is a Filipino value about getting along with others and keeping peace, especially in families and social groups. While it can promote unity, it can also become harmful when it pressures people to hide their true selves in order to fit in. This pressure to conform can lead to feelings of loneliness, stress, and frustration, especially when one is constantly expected to meet others' expectations.
Personal Experience: Cousins, Bullying, and Isolation
Growing up, I was often at odds with the expectations set by my louder, more rambunctious cousins and extended family. As an introvert who valued quiet moments over chaotic gatherings, I found myself singled out. The living room would fill with noise: laughter like peals of lightning, like the roar of wind. My aunts thrilled and cackled. My uncles howled and growled. I would wince, wishing I could block out the noise with cotton. I would lock myself in my room, and unknowingly, this sealed my fate. My preference for solitude and personal hobbies led to being labeled “may sariling mundo” (living in my own world) and “killjoy.”
This nonconformity sparked bullying and isolation, driven by the pakikisama culture, which pressured me to fit into their mold. My parents, echoing the pressure of pakikisama, once threatened to take away my toys and gaming consoles if I didn’t engage with my cousins. This guilt-tripping reinforced the toxic idea that I needed to mirror others to belong. Worse, it made me feel that I was the problem. Not being able to jive with them made me feel there was constantly something defective in me.
As an adult, the effects of those experiences linger. I no longer speak to those cousins, a reflection of how toxic pakikisama can damage relationships over time and stifle individuality. The pressure to conform left lasting scars, highlighting the impact of this cultural norm on personal identity and family connections. The saying “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” came to mind.
The Pressure of Conformity in Filipino Families
In many Filipino families, there’s strong pressure to fit in and act alike, making it difficult for individuals to show their true selves. Pakikisama, when taken to extremes, means following strict, often unspoken rules about behavior, appearance, and speech, leaving little room for individuality.
For me, this pressure came with constant insults aimed at my perceived softness and flamboyance. My cousins would tease me, hinting that I was gay, and made me feel as though my very existence was wrong. Of course, they were right. Everyone knew it. But I was supposed to be a good Catholic boy and homosexuality was a sin, right? I felt so ashamed whenever they teased me, especially after months of training and convincing myself that I was straight. And to make it stop, I was expected to laugh along, pretending the remarks didn’t cut deep.
The argument was that this would “toughen me up,” but inside, I learned to hide my resentment. If anything, I developed a skill to mask my grudges. This was a tool that proved useful to this day, in dealing with group dynamics and the corporate world. However, this wasn’t pakikisama; it was forced tolerance. The pressure to conform often pushes people to participate in harmful behaviors, such as gossiping or bullying, just to avoid being singled out or alienated.
Bullying Within the Family: The Role of Cousins
I thought family was meant to be a place of safety, somewhere to find comfort when school bullies made life hard. But when my family gathered, the bullying didn’t stop—it was just an extension of what I faced at school. I became the easy target, the “other,” simply for not fitting in. My mother, who always sided with her sisters and their children, would let them continue, even giving me disapproving looks when I voiced my complaints. In her eyes, maybe I needed this treatment; after all, she grew up in the same environment and believed it would help me fit in. I pitied her. At home, she was gentle and caring, but in front of her family, she shifted to meet their expectations.
Cousins often lead the charge to enforce group behavior, masking their actions as “teasing” or “joking,” as if it were an initiation ritual. What starts off light can quickly spiral into bullying. When I tried to defend myself or showed that it hurt, I was branded “too sensitive” or “weak.” This kind of response makes people think that showing emotion or standing apart from the group is wrong, resulting in deeper isolation and frustration.
Emotional Impact: Feeling Isolated and "Othered"
Being labeled an outcast or "may sariling mundo" carries a deep emotional burden. As a child becoming a teenager, it meant that my individuality was not welcome. It felt like my thoughts and words were worthless unless they aligned with the group. To be taken seriously and have a voice that mattered, I felt the need to prove myself to them.
Conforming to pakikisama stops people from being true to themselves and makes them feel disconnected from their families. This mindset pushes individuals into isolation, damaging relationships and making them believe their uniqueness is something to hide. The more I tried to step back from the group, the more I felt out of place, intensifying the emotional struggle.
Why It's Toxic: Pakikisama as a Tool for Control
At its core, pakikisama can turn toxic when it becomes a tool for control. Instead of fostering true harmony where everyone feels valued and included, it suppresses individuality and pressures people to act according to the main group's standards. It’s disheartening to see this dynamic play out, where individuals are reduced to mere reflections of one another.
This negative side of pakikisama turns family life into a source of stress and caused me to feel resentment, especially impacting my relationship with my mother. When everyone is forced to conform just for the sake of fitting in—repeating the same phrases and laughing along even when it isn’t genuine—real connections are lost, making it much harder to build relationships founded on mutual respect.
Breaking the Cycle: How to Move Forward
In college, I reached a breaking point. I realized I didn’t need anyone’s approval to know my worth. What had pakikisama ever done for them? While they stayed stuck in old patterns, I was in university, exploring my talents, and doing something meaningful with my life. I surrounded myself with high-quality people who weren’t just there for shallow banter or forced laughter at parties.
Breaking free from toxic pakikisama means setting boundaries with family and promoting open, honest communication. I stopped attending family gatherings and, in doing so, found peace and happiness. Now, I spend my time with friends who value self-expression and respect each other’s uniqueness, without the pressure to conform.
Family relationships improve when individuals feel safe to be themselves, without fear of judgment or exclusion. But for me, they’re like sheep blindly following the same path, and I refuse to be part of that. I will not force those I care about to like the same things I do.
Conclusion: Healing and Redefining Relationships
Healing from toxic pakikisama requires recognizing how it has impacted our identity and relationships. The key to healing is breaking free from the pressure to conform and instead focusing on creating real, honest connections. When we value and respect each individual’s uniqueness, it leads to stronger, healthier relationships.
By moving past the toxic dynamics of conformity, families can build bonds based on love, acceptance, and mutual respect—where everyone feels valued and free to express their true selves. Healing comes from embracing authenticity and understanding that true connection is found in embracing our differences.

one of the major themes found in both travellers and sa’din is masculinity and how it is performed. in sa’din, this theme is heavily explored in the character of baro gayang.
baro, whose name literally means “young man,” is the epitome of a family man. he is successful (completed bachelor’s and went to law school) and supports both his family and the government (currently working for the police/state). he is what every man should strive to be, especially for an igorot man. however, he lacks pride in his identity as an igorot (and even as a filipino) as his indigenous identity has pulled him away from the lowlander/tagalog centred, filipino identity. although he has successfully assimilated into this culture (speaks tagalog without an accent, accustomed to lowlander culture and catholic religion), he has resented his igorot culture for “setting him back.”
this is to say, baro’s identity as an indigenous man in contemporary society has set him at a disadvantage in life. this leads him to believe he is inherently inferior to his lowlander counterparts, and in order to “be the best,” he must abandon his igorotness.
he is unable to fully do this without abandoning his family, which is one of the reasons why he does what he does now. his family is traditional although somewhat agnostic (with some catholic elements mixed in). baro’s family still practice igorot traditions but has mellowed out in his father’s generation.
his real issue lies with individuals such as ceferino and kory; people who are proud of their igorot identities through and through. these individuals wear identities on their sleeves and would rather die than renounce their indigeniety. these people make baro question if one can really live a fulfilling life in contemporary society while embracing such a discriminated cultural identity. and it makes him mad—why must he feel like this while they can be happy? do you not feel shame?
ceferino consistently pushes against baro’s insecurities about his identity, making fun of him for “not being igorot enough.” (eg. cannot play the gangsa properly or can’t dance) every time, baro has to reaffirm his igorot identity to other igorots, even though he hides it in front of non-igorots. this theme of igorotness is written in the same way as i wrote their masculinity/manhood. ceferino is a proud igorot as much as he is proud in his masculinity—and he bullies those who cannot perform in these concepts as good as he can. on the other hand, the problems jun and nestor face come from them being from mixed race background (jun being 1/4th japanese and nestor being half black) and how this coincides with the igorot/filipino identity.
macarena and amboy show rejections of both traditional and contemporary masculinity (both being transgender—the main three also explore this motif albeit in a slightly different way).
this is why kory, a character who was born and lived in a western country, probably understands baro the most. they know what it’s like to live two-faced, to live an identity that is not fully realized due to the circumstances they reside in.

On Being an Introvert in the Philippines
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5578c4312efb124755ee8cc876fa128e/1d4f10e99ecd3ab9-69/s540x810/500ca1b0f0a96b16430ecaa86bb424f269bfa842.jpg)
Introduction
Exploring the lively and social culture of the Philippines as an introvert can be challenging and complex. In a country where family and community are largely valued, introverts frequently find themselves going against the societal norm. Let's delve into the distinct difficulties and challenges faced by introverts in the Philippines, including my own experiences.
Understanding Collectivism in the Philippines' Culture
Collectivism is deeply wired in Filipino culture, where the norm favors groups, family, and community over an individual. For example, Filipinos frequently seek guidance and advice from their families when making significant life decisions like career choices or marriage. Family and community play an important part in Filipino society, with major life decisions generally involving the entire family, including the extended family. The culture of having an extended family living together and helping and supporting each other in their day-to-day lives is also prevalent.
The Challenges of Family and Social Gatherings
As a kid, I recall how family gatherings were a regular thing to do when there would be an occasion, such as attending family reunions during fiestas in the province. While I respected the close-knit nature of Filipino families, these gatherings would often be an exchange of communications among relatives. The anticipation to interact with them would be draining for an introvert. Filipinos value social harmony and tend to avoid conflicts and confrontations. It's common for individuals to maintain polite interactions by abstaining from expressing disagreement when they hold differing opinions during family gatherings.
The Impact of Barrio Fiestas and Religion
Barrio fiestas in the Philippines are significant community fests. These occasions emphasize community involvement and social relations, which can be a draining activity for an introvert due to the crowds and nonstop socializing. Religion also plays a part in adding to the collectivist culture of the Philippines, with the majority of the population being Catholic. Religious values often affect the significance of community, family, and social harmony.
The Extroverted Nature of Filipino Culture
In the Philippines, being sociable is the norm. Striking up conversations with people in public places like markets or public transportation is common, as is befriending people and having a group of friends. This can be surprising for an introvert who prefers solitude. Introverts in the Philippines may feel pressured to engage in social events regularly, leading to exhaustion. The extroverted culture can overshadow the contributions of introverts, making them feel misunderstood and undervalued.
Personal Experiences and Educational Challenges
Personally, I have often been criticized for being quiet, labeled as a "snob" or a "weirdo" by family and acquaintances. In terms of educational settings, curriculums in the country's education comprise group activities, performance-based tasks, recitations, etc. In which introverted students may struggle to thrive, affecting their grades and self-confidence.
Tips for Thriving as an Introvert
For introverts in the Philippines, finding quiet spaces, setting boundaries, and connecting with like-minded individuals can be beneficial. Embracing one's introverted traits and communicating openly about needs can help introverts thrive in an extroverted culture.
Conclusion
Being an introvert in the Philippines comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities for growth. By understanding and appreciating the cultural values of collectivism and social harmony, as well as the extroverted nature of Filipino culture, introverts can navigate their social landscape more effectively. So, embrace your unique traits, set those boundaries, and find your balance—you've got this!

Celebrating Tradition: The Barong Tagalog Experience is more than just wearing a garment; it’s about embracing and honoring Filipino heritage, culture, and craftsmanship. The Barong Tagalog, with its rich history and deep symbolism, has been a cornerstone of Filipino identity, often worn for formal events, cultural celebrations, and even national holidays. Here’s an exploration of how the Barong Tagalog serves as both a symbol of tradition and an ongoing experience:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ba000321592e06e42513488aef0b1b98/a4f412aebbf62039-f9/s540x810/6903bf98185c5fadb438f4cdf77b5ef9baca19e7.jpg)
1. The Significance of the Barong Tagalog
The Barong Tagalog is not just a piece of clothing; it’s a symbol of Filipino pride, unity, and resilience. Traditionally worn by Filipino men, the Barong reflects Filipino values such as humility, respect, and refinement.
History: The origins of the Barong Tagalog date back to the Philippines’ colonial era, when it was worn by Filipino elites to differentiate themselves from the Spanish rulers and other foreigners. Over time, the Barong evolved to become the national formal wear for men, often seen in weddings, fiestas, and governmental events.
Symbol of Filipino Identity: The Barong is worn with honor in the Philippines and abroad, representing Filipino pride and resilience. It’s seen as a mark of respect to Filipino culture, often used to mark milestones like weddings, anniversaries, and national holidays like Independence Day.
2. The Craftsmanship Behind the Barong
The creation of the Barong Tagalog is a labor of love that involves skilled artisans, most notably those from the Visayan region, such as Aklan and Iloilo, where the iconic piña fabric is woven. The embroidery, which is often intricate and delicate, is hand-stitched, a process that can take days or even weeks to complete depending on the complexity of the design.
Piña and Jusi Fabrics: Authentic Barongs are made from natural fibers like piña (pineapple fibers) or jusi (a blend of banana and silk fibers), which are prized for their fine texture, lightness, and durability. These fabrics are often handwoven, with the piña fabric in particular requiring meticulous work.
Embroidery and Design: Traditional designs are symbolic, with flowers, vines, and natural motifs representing Filipino culture and heritage. Some Barongs have more contemporary designs, but the craftsmanship remains the same, emphasizing meticulous attention to detail.
3. Wearing the Barong Tagalog
The Barong Tagalog is often worn for formal occasions like weddings, state functions, or cultural celebrations. When worn, it is typically paired with dress pants, and unlike other formal shirts, it is usually worn untucked.
Comfort: While the Barong Tagalog is a formal garment, it’s designed for comfort. The fabric is light and breathable, making it ideal for the Philippines’ tropical climate. This also makes it suitable for outdoor events, as it allows the wearer to stay cool while maintaining a polished appearance.
Cultural Experience: Wearing the Barong connects the individual to Filipino tradition, history, and culture. It represents a moment of respect for Filipino heritage and offers the opportunity to experience Filipino customs firsthand. Whether at a wedding, a fiesta, or a formal event, the Barong is a reminder of Filipino values, from family bonds to national pride.
4. The Barong Tagalog in Modern Times
While the Barong has roots in tradition, it has evolved and adapted to modern times, appearing in contemporary Filipino fashion. Designers today incorporate elements of the Barong Tagalog into modern suits, dresses, and even accessories. The Barong Tagalog has transcended its original role as formal wear to become a canvas for creative expression.
Modern Interpretations: Filipino designers such as Rajo Laurel, Ben Chan, and Paul Cabral have reinterpreted the Barong Tagalog for the modern age, integrating innovative cuts, fabrics, and designs while staying true to its heritage. These versions of the Barong are often seen on the international runway, symbolizing the global recognition of Filipino craftsmanship and style.
Global Symbol of Filipino Identity: Outside the Philippines, the Barong Tagalog has become a cultural ambassador. Celebrities, politicians, and notable figures wear the Barong to formal events to pay homage to their Filipino roots, contributing to its growing global recognition.
5. Barong Tagalog: A Celebration of Filipino Culture
Wearing a Barong Tagalog is a celebration of Filipino culture in its most refined form. It’s a visual representation of tradition and history, a way to honor the craftsmanship of Filipino artisans, and a symbol of respect for the country’s rich and diverse heritage.
Weddings and Milestones: The Barong Tagalog is frequently seen at Filipino weddings, where it is worn by the groom and male members of the family. It is also worn to commemorate national holidays and other cultural celebrations.
Fiestas and Festivals: The Barong Tagalog is often worn during fiestas, the colorful and lively celebrations held in towns and villages across the Philippines. These festivities showcase the Filipino spirit of joy, community, and tradition.
6. Passing the Tradition Down
As the Barong Tagalog is passed from generation to generation, it remains a family heirloom. The value of owning an authentic Barong is not only in its craftsmanship but also in the stories it holds – whether it’s a wedding garment, a piece passed down from a grandfather, or a souvenir from a national celebration.
Celebrating Tradition: The Barong Tagalog Experience encapsulates a deep sense of national pride and cultural preservation. Wearing the Barong is not just a style choice; it’s a way of honoring Filipino traditions, celebrating Filipino craftsmanship, and keeping a centuries-old cultural practice alive for generations to come.

Amsterdam's Filipino Pharma Reps: Navigating Workplace Rights, Bank Transfers, and Literary Voices (OFWJobs.org)
The exodus of Filipino workers to foreign lands has been a defining feature of the Philippine economy for decades. Among these Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), a diverse range of professionals seek opportunities abroad, including those in highly specialized fields like pharmaceutical sales. This article focuses on the experiences of Filipino pharmaceutical sales representatives in Amsterdam, exploring their workplace rights, the challenges they face, and the evolving landscape of financial transactions, particularly concerning the adoption period of bank transfers. Furthermore, it will delve into the growing body of literature penned by OFW authors, reflecting their unique perspectives on the OFW experience and the spectrum of employment opportunities available to them.
Amsterdam, with its robust healthcare system and thriving pharmaceutical industry, presents a potentially attractive destination for Filipino pharmaceutical sales professionals. However, navigating a new work environment in a foreign country comes with its own set of complexities. Understanding workplace rights is crucial for any OFW, and this is particularly true in a regulated field like pharmaceuticals. Dutch labor laws are generally considered strong, offering protections related to working hours, minimum wage, sick leave, and vacation time. Filipino pharmaceutical sales representatives in Amsterdam are entitled to these same protections, and it’s essential for them to be aware of their rights and responsibilities under Dutch law. Resources like the Netherlands Trade Union Confederation (FNV) can provide valuable information and support to OFWs navigating the Dutch labor market.
One of the challenges faced by OFWs, regardless of their profession, is the process of sending remittances back home to their families. Historically, this involved lengthy processes and high fees through traditional money transfer services. The adoption of bank transfers has revolutionized this process, offering a more efficient and cost-effective way to send money internationally. However, the adoption period of bank transfers has varied significantly depending on individual circumstances and the development of banking infrastructure. While many OFWs in Amsterdam have readily embraced online banking and international transfers, factors like access to reliable internet, familiarity with online platforms, and the availability of compatible banking services in both the host and home countries can influence the speed of adoption. Furthermore, concerns about security and potential fraud can also contribute to hesitancy in adopting new financial technologies.
The rise of fintech companies has further disrupted the remittance landscape, offering even faster and cheaper options for international money transfers. These services often leverage mobile technology, providing increased accessibility and convenience for OFWs. Understanding the various options available and choosing the most suitable method for their needs is crucial for OFWs to maximize the value of their hard-earned income.
Beyond the practicalities of work and finance, the emotional and social experiences of OFWs are often complex and multifaceted. Leaving behind family, friends, and familiar surroundings to pursue opportunities abroad can be both exhilarating and challenging. This unique experience has given rise to a growing body of literature by OFW authors, who offer intimate and powerful insights into the lives of those who work far from home.
These narratives explore themes of homesickness, cultural adjustment, the challenges of maintaining long-distance relationships, and the constant balancing act between providing for their families and pursuing their own personal and professional goals. Some authors focus on the specific challenges faced by certain professions, offering a glimpse into the realities of working in fields like healthcare, engineering, or education in different cultural contexts. Others explore the broader themes of identity, belonging, and the search for meaning in a globalized world.
These literary works provide a valuable window into the OFW experience, challenging stereotypes and offering a more nuanced understanding of the sacrifices, resilience, and triumphs of those who choose to work abroad. They also serve as a testament to the power of storytelling to connect people across borders and cultures, fostering empathy and understanding. For aspiring OFWs, these narratives can offer valuable insights into the potential challenges and rewards of working overseas, helping them make informed decisions about their own career paths.
The availability of diverse employment opportunities for OFWs is constantly evolving. Websites like OFWJobs.org play a crucial role in connecting Filipino job seekers with potential employers around the world. These platforms provide a centralized hub for information on job vacancies, visa requirements, and other essential resources for those considering working abroad. They also offer a platform for OFWs to share their experiences and connect with one another, building a sense of community and support.
For Filipinos considering a career in pharmaceutical sales in Amsterdam, thorough research is essential. Understanding the specific requirements for working in the Dutch pharmaceutical industry, including any necessary certifications or licenses, is crucial. Networking with other Filipino professionals in the field can also provide valuable insights and support.
The landscape of employment for OFWs is constantly changing, influenced by global economic trends, technological advancements, and evolving immigration policies. Staying informed about these changes and adapting to new opportunities is crucial for OFWs to thrive in the global job market. The continued development of online resources, support networks, and literary platforms provides valuable tools for OFWs to navigate these changes and share their experiences with the world.
The stories of Filipino pharmaceutical sales representatives in Amsterdam are just a small part of the larger narrative of the OFW experience. Their journeys, marked by hard work, resilience, and the pursuit of a better future, are a testament to the enduring spirit of the Filipino people. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the experiences of OFWs will continue to shape the global landscape, enriching cultures and economies around the world. Their contributions, both economic and cultural, deserve recognition and understanding. By amplifying their voices and supporting their endeavors, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future for all. The growing body of literature by OFW authors, coupled with online resources like OFWJobs.org, provides valuable platforms for sharing these stories and connecting OFWs with the resources they need to succeed.

The rise in popularity of running in the Philippines indicates a revitalized outlook among Filipinos regarding their health and wellness. This is reflected in the growing number of participants in recent events like fun runs and races and the burgeoning running communities in many parts of the country.
In fact, over 9,600 runners, including novice and seasoned ones, families, kids, and people from various backgrounds, joined the two legs of Run for Wellness this year, held at UP Diliman in Quezon City on June 16 and Naga City on September 15, just in time for the celebration of the Peñafrancia Festival.

Organized by Southstar Drug and Maxicare, Run for Wellness is an annual event that promotes physical health and well-being through running. Originally held in Naga City, it has since expanded to Metro Manila to encourage more Filipinos to sprint toward their best lives and become their own champions.
Joining running events like Run for Wellness is a great way to start your own wellness journey and connect with others who have the same goal of embracing a more active lifestyle. After all, running is free and accessible compared to other forms of workout, which makes it beginner-friendly. It’s a great cardiovascular exercise that also strengthens muscles and bones, and boosts mental well-being.

It doesn’t require much to start running as a habit—good running shoes and comfortable clothing are really all you need. Basic knowledge about warm-up and cool-down exercises to avoid injuries, a fitness watch to track your progress over time, and the right mindset to overcome days when you just don’t feel like running at all can also help.
As you adopt running in your day-to-day routine, don’t forget to be mindful of the other aspects of your health and wellness. These include eating a balanced diet, having adequate rest and sleep, and ensuring you are in the right mental space despite the stresses of everyday life. In doing so, you’ll be able to achieve better holistic health, enabling you to be stronger and stay consistent with your running journey.

REGIONAL NEWS: A Negrense Chef shows compassion after Grocery Mishap at a local SM Savemore in Silay City [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
SILAY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL -- Local Negrense chef and social content creator 'Ms. Hanna Melea Magnifico Señeres', recently found herself in an unfortunate situation while shopping at SM Savemore in Rizal Street, Brgy. 4, Silay City, Negros Occidental, dated March 22nd last Friday night. After she recently purchased a kilo of Bounty Fresh Chicken worth PHP281.56 (around U$D5.00), she accidentally left the item at the cashier's counter, only to discover it missing when she arrived home.
Upon returning to the store to inquire about the missing chicken, CCTV footage revealed that the person next in line had illegally taken the chicken along with their own groceries. While the staff offered to replace the item at the expense of the cashier and bagger, Ms. Señeres made the compassionate decision to pay for the chicken again out of consideration for the workers' well-being, despite the mishap not being entirely her fault: "At the back of my mind, I'm telling myself I can get the item for free since it will be charged to the cashier and to the bagger anyway. But upon thinking that those workers are just minimum wage earners and knowing some are struggling just to make ends meet, I just decided to pay for it again since I am also at fault as I didn't check everything before leaving", Señeres said in a Facebook post.
'Hanna Melea Magnifico Señeres' initially gained recognition for her exceptional culinary abilities and her enthusiasm for crafting delectable dishes. Her Instagram username handle "@cookwith.hanna" (part of Meta Platforms Inc.), serves as a platform where she exhibits her culinary expertise and shares her localized creations with her audience, particularly catering to the Filipino community. Through her online presence, she motivates individuals to delve into the realm of cooking and appreciate the satisfaction of preparing homemade meals for the Negrenses.
While 'SM Savemore', a local grocery neighborhood store belonging to the 'SM Markets' family is a convenient and easily accessible choice for communities in the Philippines. As part of the 'ShoeMart Group', 'Savemore' is dedicated to fulfilling the everyday needs of shoppers by offering a diverse range of products and services to meet their requirements, when it comes to food, veggie produce, etc.
In contrast to larger shopping malls, 'Savemore' prioritizes providing a compact and welcoming shopping experience for customers who seek to purchase essential items at conveniently located branches, including the examples of Bacolod City in Negros Occidental and Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental via CityMall.
The heartfelt captioned post she shared exclusively on social media about her personal journey at checkout, resonated with numerous online netizens. They commended her for embracing kindness and understanding in a world that is frequently consumed by anger and bitterness from the negative or toxic bashers. Her message of compassion and empathy towards others deeply touched those who came across her story, highlighting the significance of placing kindness above the need to be right.
Despite unfortunate incidents involving the bought missing chicken for Ms. Señeres at checkout… Sanford Marketing Corporation (SMC), the local franchise owner of 'SM Savemore' in Silay City, faced total criticism and harassment from online netizens.
The irresponsible employee for the incident may be potentially charged with negligence and theft for abandoning the fresh chicken, which soon added in a criminal records at the Silay City Police Station (SCPS). If proven guilty, the 'SM Savemore' cashier employee will be permanently fired without any potential retired benefits.
Nevertheless, amidst this unfortunate event, Ms. Señeres' choice to emphasize kindness and empathy highlights the importance of compassion during challenging times.

Journal Entry No. 5 (BLOG): The Global Village and Me
Observation
According to the United Nations, they define global citizenship as “...the umbrella term for social, political, environmental, and economic actions of globally minded individuals and communities on a worldwide scale. The term can refer to the belief that individuals are members of multiple, diverse, local, and non-local networks rather than single actors affecting isolated societies. Promoting global citizenship in sustainable development will allow individuals to embrace their social responsibility to act for the benefit of all societies, not just their own.” (United Nations, n.d.). When it comes to the concept of global citizenship it makes me realize how much of a small fish I am in a big ocean. In my own opinion, to be a global citizen means to be a part of various groups, local and international, and to contribute to them as an individual through any sort of means, even if it's just a simple conversation.
Insight
I already was a global citizen even before I knew the definition of the term. Such as interacting with people of different nationalities and ethnicities on Discord, Twitter, Instagram, etc. During the pandemic, I made a lot of friends from different countries. I got especially close to my friend, Sas, who was from the Netherlands. The Discord conversation below is me asking about why Sas’ family avoids Arles. (van Gulik, S. 2023).
Through my conversations with Sas, I am participating as a global citizen and having interesting cultural discussions with people from all over the world. When I was listening to Sir Geoffrey's lecture, there was something that he said that struck me. When you are a global citizen, you are not obligated to physically act or to go anywhere. You at the very least need to have the awareness and the social responsibility to be what is essentially, a decent human being. Simple conversations that I have with my online friends bring us a little bit closer to a world where we can get along and come to an understanding, while still respecting each other's cultures. It's just like how in past lessons, we have participated in globalization whether we realize it or not. The same concept is applied here, we are global citizens whether we realize it or not.
Learning
The world is getting smaller with the amount of information and connections we get through the vastness of the World Wide Web. But personally, the world is getting larger because there is so much information at our fingertips and so many things in the world. Whether they are good or bad it is still a part of the experiences we live through as human beings. As a Filipino, I realize that there are so many things about the world that I'd like to learn in terms of the culture that other people engage in. It is so new to me and even though I can't leave the country, I still get to learn by interacting with people. It is so simple yet learning and being open to the experiences of people who are different from you opens your mind to new things. Even if it means that I feel like a small fish in a big ocean, I'd like to look on the bright side. That means there's so much for me to explore in the ocean and other fish to find.

![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9991de0478ba2f5c2cf8b30224bc5eed/1db53bd23aac8cbc-00/s540x810/66450f116b2ae32376844d540d4b9bc09d0404b3.jpg)

Filipino Supervisors in Bahrain Post-9/11: Adapting to a Changing World & the Rise of AI
The early 2000s, shadowed by the specter of 9/11 and the subsequent global shifts in security and economy, witnessed a significant change in the landscape of overseas work, especially for Filipinos. Bahrain, with its booming construction and oil industries, became a popular destination for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), particularly those in supervisory roles. This era marked a specific surge in the demand for Filipino production supervisors, valued for their work ethic, English proficiency, and adaptability. They played a crucial role in bridging the gap between management and the predominantly South Asian workforce common in Bahrain's industrial sectors.
The post-9/11 world brought with it heightened security measures and stricter immigration policies worldwide. For OFWs, this meant navigating a more complex web of requirements and facing increased scrutiny. In Bahrain, while the overall impact was less severe than in some Western countries, it still contributed to a greater emphasis on documentation, background checks, and the need for demonstrable skills. This placed a premium on qualified individuals, like production supervisors, who could prove their expertise and contribute effectively to the Bahraini economy.
Language played a crucial role in the experience of Filipino production supervisors in Bahrain during this time. While English served as a common language for workplace communication, particularly in supervisory roles, learning Arabic, even at a basic conversational level, offered significant advantages. It facilitated better understanding and rapport with local workers and fostered stronger relationships within the community. However, language learning resources for OFWs were limited. Formal classes were often expensive and inaccessible due to work schedules. Informal learning through interactions with colleagues and exposure to Arabic media played a vital role. Resourcefulness and peer learning within the Filipino community became essential tools for navigating the linguistic landscape.
Life for these OFWs wasn't without its challenges. Being separated from families for extended periods took an emotional toll. Adapting to a new culture, climate, and social environment presented its own set of hurdles. Navigating the bureaucratic processes related to visas, remittances, and other legal matters could be daunting. Yet, the drive to provide a better future for their families back home fueled their perseverance and resilience.
Fast forward to the present, and the landscape of work is undergoing a radical transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. These technological advancements are reshaping industries worldwide, and the impact on OFWs, including production supervisors, is a topic of considerable discussion and concern. While some fear that automation will lead to job displacement, others view it as an opportunity for upskilling and adaptation.
For production supervisors, the integration of AI and automation in manufacturing and other industries presents both challenges and opportunities. Routine tasks, such as data entry, inventory management, and basic quality control, are increasingly being automated. This requires production supervisors to develop new skills that complement these technologies. The ability to analyze data generated by AI systems, troubleshoot automated processes, and manage human-machine interactions becomes crucial. Furthermore, the emphasis shifts from managing manual labor to overseeing complex automated systems and ensuring their optimal performance.
The future of work for OFWs, particularly in supervisory roles, hinges on embracing lifelong learning and adapting to the evolving demands of the job market. Developing proficiency in areas such as data analytics, process automation, and digital literacy is essential to remain competitive. Moreover, soft skills, including communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking, continue to hold significant value in a technologically advanced workplace. These skills allow supervisors to effectively manage teams, navigate complex situations, and adapt to the rapidly changing dynamics of the industry.
Resources like OFWJobs.org (www.ofwjobs.org) provide valuable information and support for OFWs navigating the evolving job market. These platforms offer access to job listings, career guidance, and resources for upskilling and professional development. They also serve as a crucial link between OFWs and potential employers, facilitating job searches and career transitions.
The experience of Filipino production supervisors in Bahrain in the early 2000s provides a valuable lens through which to examine the impact of technological advancements on OFW jobs. Their adaptability, resilience, and willingness to embrace new challenges are qualities that will continue to be essential in the age of AI and automation. While the specific tasks and responsibilities of production supervisors may evolve, the core values of hard work, dedication, and the pursuit of a better future remain unchanged.
The evolving landscape of work requires a proactive approach to learning and development. OFWs, particularly those in supervisory roles, need to invest in acquiring new skills and adapting to the changing demands of the job market. This includes developing expertise in areas related to AI, automation, and digital technologies. Furthermore, continuous learning and upskilling are essential to remain competitive and secure fulfilling career paths in the future.
The impact of AI and automation on OFW jobs is a complex issue with both potential benefits and challenges.
