Mangyan Attire: The Mangyan indigenous groups from Mindoro have distinct clothing. Women wear “tapis,” a wrap-around cloth, and men wear a loincloth called “baag.”
Kalinga Attire: The Kalinga people from the Cordillera region are known for their body tattoos and traditional clothing. Women often wear a “lufid” or wrap-around skirt along with intricate beadwork.

These examples represent just a fraction of the rich variety of traditional costumes in the Philippines, each reflecting the culture, history, and unique heritage of different regions and indigenous communities.

When it comes to dressing up for special occasions and events, celebrities have the most fashionable options at their disposal. From red carpets to award shows, stars often turn to designer labels and couture pieces to make a statement. However, more recently, there has been an influx of international celebrities wearing modern Barong Tagalog – a traditional Filipino garment – to various events.
What is the Barong Tagalog?
The Barong Tagalog is a traditional dress worn by men in the Philippines. It is a formal shirt that features embroidered designs and is made of piña fabric. It is sometimes referred to as the Baro’t S  aya and is usually paired with a color-coordinated “saya” skirt for women. The modern Barong Tagalog is characterized by a loose fit and contemporary look, making it appealing to men all over the world.
How the Barong Tagalog Went International
The modern barong tagalog burst onto the international scene in the early 2010s when local celebrities began wearing it to events. These stars included actors and singers from the Philippines and other countries. In recent years, international celebrities have also been spotted wearing the barong tagalog to red-carpet events.
Celebrities Wearing the Barong Tagalog
Some of the most famous international celebrities wearing the barong tagalog include Hollywood celebrities and Hollywood stars. Hollywood actor Darren Criss, Jeremy Renner, Dave Bautista, rapper Apl.de.ap, & director Quentin Tarantino has worn the barong tagalog at events.
Aside from Barong Tagalog, international celebrities also wear modern Filipiniana dresses during awards and prestigious events. Vanessa Hudgens paid homage to her Filipino heritage at the recent Met Gala. Kelly Osbourne has also showcased an elegant royal blue modern Filipiniana in a Hollywood event. Just a few international celebrities show elegance and grace in wearing traditional Filipino at prestigious events.

For many generations now, barongs are still worn for numerous Filipino events, and their prominence is expected to not fade away any time soon. The different types of barongs may be based on the fabric used, design, or embroideries, and the event dictates which variation is fitting to be worn. Regardless, there are etiquette rules that should not be ignored no matter the occasion.
When you are asked to wear a barong, the chances are the event is a formal one. That means that your outfit should look not only prim but also sophisticated. Even if your polo is rather decorative like some modern barongs nowadays, elegance is still your outfit’s goal. Therefore, you’re not advised to simply wear it however you like, not only for aesthetic but also practical purposes.

The Proper Way of Wearing Barong Tagalog
Wearing a barong isn’t really that complicated, and most Filipino men have already worn it at least once in their life. However, not everyone who wears it can pull off the sophisticated look, and that’s what you should be going for. With that considered, here are a few tips to keep in mind when wearing a barong.
Select the perfect fit for you
In terms of physical comfort, the fit is the most significant factor. You can’t just wear whatever barong is at your disposal as long as you can fit in it. Otherwise, you won’t be able to move much, or the excess fabric will keep getting in the way. Likewise, the fit also matters when it comes to how the barong will look on you. You will want it to wrap around your body enough that it doesn’t look stuffy or baggy. Here is how you will determine if the barong perfectly fits your figure.
Tumblr media
For the length, the barong itself should reach the bottom of your butt. That is around the middle point between your shoulders and the base of your feet. If cut too short or too long, it would look awkward. For the sleeves, the length should cover your wrists and not go past that. Also, make sure that the seams on the sleeves are not located any lower than the top of your shoulder.
When it comes to the form, make sure that you can still maximize your range of motion when you try wearing your barong. It’s supposed to not feel suffocating for your chest, armpits, and upper back, yet not too spacious at the same time. For the collar, the available space should allow you to fit a finger in. Any tighter than that, and you won’t be able to breathe with ease.
Choose a matching undershirt
Barongs are made with breathable and translucent fabrics such as abaca, cocoon, jusi, and piña. That means that what you wear under your barong is visible, and that’s why it should be put into consideration when you’re dressing up. If the undergarment or undershirt that you’re wearing is not suitable for your barong, may it be in terms of length or color, your whole getup is as good as over.
Tumblr media
Therefore, skip on the tank tops, as those are too eye-catching, and exposed skin doesn’t look good under the barong. Instead, get yourself a long-sleeved Camisa de Chino, precisely one that doesn’t clash with the color of your barong. It will make the whole outfit look minimal and refined, and it is also breathable and lightweight, which is more comfortable to use.
Don’t attach a boutonniere
For formal events like wedding ceremonies, boutonnieres are ideal for adding that perfect finishing touch to your whole look. They usually come as a combination of small flowers, such as rose and baby’s breath, and they are attached to the left lapel of the coat. However, if you are wearing a barong, those should be avoided. After all, barongs are made of loose fibers, so pins can damage them.
Complete the look that goes with your barong
The whole look doesn’t end only at the barong. You shouldn’t disregard your pants and shoes as well. No matter how fitting and exquisite your barong is, its beauty will be overlooked if the rest of what you’re wearing don’t match with each other or are too tacky.
The bottom pair should ideally be black tuxedo pants long enough to cover the whole length of your legs. Wear long socks with a matching color so that your ankles or skin will not be exposed when you sit or cross your legs. You can then wear patent slippers, leather shoes, or a shined lace-up, and the color shouldn’t clash with your whole outfit as well. Also, keep in mind that you should fasten up all buttons in your barong for a formal and respectable look.

Above all, what matters the most is still your confidence in wearing your outfit, and that applies not only to barongs but in everything you wear. One of the best approaches in boosting your self-esteem when you’re dressed in a barong is knowing for yourself that you’re wearing it right.

Have you seen how young Filipinas are dressing today? They seem to adapt to the K-pop culture, western styles, and trending fashion. But do they know something about the traditional Filipino dresses? Do they even have a clue what does it look like?
Young Filipinos have been exposed to traditional Filipino dresses and outfits since kindergarten. They saw and even wear those in many school events. They can also see them in movies and TV shows, the filipiniana section in many department stores, and many special formal occasions.

The barong tagalong is a great article of clothing, though to fully maximize what it can do for you, it helps getting to know a little more about it -and as they say, knowing is half the battle. From wearing the barong to keeping it clean, every barong-wearing man should be aware of the hows and whys of this exquisitely versatile wear.
Tumblr media
Dressing for the Occasion
Call it formal wear, or traditional attire, or work clothes, the Barong Tagalong can be a great wardrobe choice for a lot of functions -provided you know what you are working with. Take note of the barong’s color, fabric, and cut to know which one to bring to which event. A short sleeved barong, for example, is better for outdoor activities in the sun. On the other hand, a nighttime gala might be a great time to bring out an all black barong. Always remember to choose the right piece for the right time. If you are having trouble deciding, check out our handy guide for choosing the right barong for the occasion.
Prepare for Questions
For Filipinos, the barong tagalong is a piece of tradition and history. For everyone else, it is an eye-catching look that also begs some curious questions. Depending on the crowd you will be with, it is possible that there are people who might ask about the barong, and it helps to be prepared to answer such inquiries. We will not be going into the history of the barong right here -that in itself is worthy of a whole new discussion. But do try to read up a little beforehand on the history, take note of what fabric your barong is (the translucent nature of a barong incites people to ask what it is made of), and when you’re in doubt, nothing is more gentlemanly than a man who is willing to admit what he does not know.
The Camisa is Important Too
The camisa de chino is the humble undershirt that is used for all barongs. While it is possible to use a regular undershirt, the camisa’s lightweight fabric and cut are the factors that makes it fitting to be worn with barongs. All that said, be sure to bring an extra camisa when you can. When travelling, try to have at least two camisas (of the appropriate color) for each barong you will be using. This is extra important when you’re going to be out in the sun, as the camisa will be absorbing most of the sweat, having a spare ready will help you keep clean and fresh.
Of course, never forget the most important rule of the camisa: it must be fitted. Just as fitted undershirts are a golden rule for suits, even more so for the translucent Barong Tagalog as the undershirt will be quite ‘visible’, so it always has to look and fit perfectly.
Don’t Skimp Out on Fitting
The fit of the barong matter a lot, so it goes without saying that fitting it properly is mandatory. Even when buying a barong off the shelf (which is a great choice when you need to one quickly), consider having some alterations since these do not take a lot of time and makes the barong look even better on you. Naturally, a custom made barong will be a great fit once it is done.
Make a note of when you acquire a barong. Because after a year or so, it is important to make sure that the fit is still good. For guys who are currently taking on a fitness or diet program, consider getting a fitting as you reach your fitness goals (which could mean a significant change in body shape in a matter of weeks of months). Developing muscle areas and trimming down will have a big impact on how the barong fits so when you undertake these life improvements, have the barong evolve along with you.
More Than Just the Barong
Picking out a good pair of pants and shoes to go with a barong is important. For pants, the safest choice is to pick black slacks that fit comfortably. Go for a cut that compliments the shape and length of your legs. As for choosing belts, use ones with buckles that have subtle designs for barongs that have complex embroidery. On the other hand, if your barong of choice has very minimal flair, you can opt for a belt buckle that has a little bit of emphasis.
The color of the shoes should go with the color of the pants. Leather (or pleather) are reasonable options, though suede and other materials will work just as well. As for the style, it really depends on the occasion. If the event is informal enough, you may want to consider black topsiders or loafers for a more relaxed look. In most cases, avoid using sports shoes (rubber shoes, running shoes, etc) because they will almost always clash with a barong.
Lastly, yes, you can wear cufflinks on a barong. However, before you decide on what pair to wear, take a moment to check the fabric of your barong. If it uses pina silk (or pina seda), just know that your barong has a very delicate fabric. The chances of cufflinks doing damage is minimal, but you may want to choose lightweight links in order to minimize stressing the fabric.
Going On the Road
There will be plenty of events that will require some travelling, and sometimes, these events will last for several days (such as conventions and conferences). For occasions such as these, packing a few extra items will certainly help. Clothes hangers and plastic suit covers are good to have for both the trip and for storing the barong at your lodging. If you really need to have them packed in your travel bags, and there are plenty of times when one has to, just make sure to fold them neatly. It will have some fold lines and a few creases, but those can be remedied. Some hotels (especially business hotels) will have an iron that you can use, so look up our guide on maintaining your barong for instructions on how to smoothen out any wrinkles that it may have gotten during the trip.
