Golden Curls, Magic Songs
Chapter: 4/?
[Ch: 1, 2, 3]
Princess Annabeth never liked her palace. She wanted to live as a free citizen, not bound by the rules of being the crown princess of Olympus. So she ran away. When she was just seven.
She was found in the woods by an old woman who took her in. The woman soon became someone dear to Annabeth and when she told her about the magic healing powers, the wioman was delighted. But her happiness soon turned to greed and she has kept Annabeth stuck in the tall tower for the next ten years of her life.
Now Annabeth is eighteen and wants to leave this tower for good. So when a cute thief pops up in her tower, who's to say she won't take her chance?
⋆⁺‧₊☽◯☾₊‧⁺⋆
Annabeth was only half-conscious. She opened her eyes slightly, enjoying the breeze that hit her face as the horse, blackjack, ran. She didn't know where they were going. She should be worried, but she just can't get herself to worry right now. She was about to close her eye and delve back into the realm of dreams but she felt a hand touch her head and pat it again and again.
"Blondie, get up, we're here." She heard someone say and she grunted and got up, annoyed at being woken up. "What, where are we?" She asked, unwrapping one hand from Percy's torso to rub her eyes. "We're at Emberfell." He said and used his hand to unwrap her's from him and got off the horse. He then offered to help her but she just glared at him and swatted his hand away, which got a chuckle out of him. "I can do it my self, thank you very much." She said and dismounted the horse.
"Your hair's a bit of a mess, blondie." Percy said as he rummaged through the left saddle bag of his horse. "Don't call me blondie." She retorted and once again, engaged in a fight with her curls. They were all tangled and bunched up at her forehead. Maybe all that breeze wasn't so good for her.
"What else do you expect me to call you? You didn't tell me your name and you didn't want to be called princess. So for now, you're blondie." He said and grabbed her satchel and stuffed a few things in them. "Why are we at Emberfell?" She asked him, dusting off her skirt and fixing her hair. "Horses don't come further than this. They can sense the Dark Depths from further away, so they refuse to step further than this." He said and she nodded, taking in the new information.
"So we're closer to the Dark Depths now?" She said. "Only a day's trip from here." Percy said and bid his horse goodbye, sending it away as he stood beside Annabeth and watched the town with her. Emberfell wasn't a small town but it seemed like it was stuck in the past, seeing as there were no horses, people could only walk from one place to the other, making it seem like a small remote village in one of the corners of Olympus.
"Well then, shall we blondie?" He said in an amusing tone and offered her a hand, which she again just swatted away. They walked toward the village and it took about 25 minutes for them to go from the muddy roads of the forest to the cobble stone roads of Emberfell. "Hey, Percy." She said and he turned around and raised an eyebrow. "Could we make a quick stop there? I need new shoes." She said pointing toward one of the stalls in the row of them. He nodded and they went toward one.
She looked at the shoes, none of them seeming like they can stand the harsh weather of the Dark Depths. "Do you think these'll get through the Dark Depths?" She whispered to Percy and he just nodded no.
"Do you have any sturdy boots?" He asked the old woman who just pulled up a pair of brown boots which looked like they'd fit her perfectly. "How much for these?" He asked the vendor and Annabeth paid the amount, almost immediately throwing her mother's flats and pulling on the pair of boots.
"These are perfect, thanks." She said and grabbed an apple from the satchel, biting into it. "From here on, we just go straight and it'll get us out of here and to the next town." Percy said and she nodded, following him as she chewed the sweet apple. They kept bickering from there on. It went like this, Percy commenting on something about her and her retaliating. Annabeth hadn't even realised how fast time flew by until she had seen the sun setting. She forgot how lonely she was not having anyone else to talk to.
"How did you even wind up being a thief?" She asked him, which seemed to be the wrong thing to ask seeing as he immediately fell silent. "You don't have to answer that. I won't mind." She said and they both fell into an uncomfortable silence. Stupid! Just because they talked for sometime doesn't mean they were close enough to talk about that. It had probably been fifteen minutes since she asked that damned question when they heard a voice yell from behind them.
"Hey! Isn't that Percy Jackson? That thief?" Someone yelled and Percy and Annabeth turned to look at eachother, just realising that his hood was down. It must've fallen down when they were on the horse. She turned around once more and saw a group of people dressed in uniform run toward them with their hands on the hilts of their swords. She nudged Percy and he turned to look where she was looking and his eyes widened to the size of saucers.
"Who are they, Percy?" She started asking but was cut short when he grabbed her hand and started running the other direction. "Who are they?" She yelled at him as they were running. "The Palace guards!" He yelled back and it suddenly clicked in her head. She saw the emblem of Olympus on the breast pocket of one of the guards. "This way!" He yelled and they took a sharp left. But it seemed like his memory was failing him as this way was not a shortcut out but rather a dead end cliff.
"Are you sure this is the way, Percy?" She asked, heaving as she tried to catch her breath. "I think it was the next left." Percy replied and she glared at him in exasperation. Now they were stuck on a cliff. She found a thick and impossibly long rope thrown to the side and she grabbed it, standing beside Percy who was now armed with a stick. "What are you going to do with that?" She asked him and he gave her a look saying really?
"What will you do with that?" He questioned. "You'll see." She replied and grabbed the rope and swung it toward a half broken ledge. He wanted to keep seeing what she would do but he herad the rushed footsteps of the guards chasing them and held his weapon in a feeble attempt of defence. He managed to knockout almost every single guard that came toward him.
"Damn, I should really get me one of these!" He said, twirling the surprisingly useful twig-sword in his hand. He was about to turn around to show blondie his newly founded skills but stopped when he saw one other guard come his way. The captain of the guard come, holding his long shiny and sharp sword in front of him. Percy immediately fell back into the position Luke had taught him when he was just thirteen.
There was obviously a reason he was named the captain of the guard cause this man could fight. They kept exchanging attempts at attacking, none of them getting a scratch on the other but only exhausting themselves. Percy was getting tired but fortunately for him, he heard his name called out and turned his head to the side to see a long rope come toward him. He threw the stick-sword toward the captain, distracting him as he grabbed on the the rope and swung toward the blond haired beauty who stood on the other side of the cliff.
He managed to land on his feet and held her hand in his as they started to run away from the captain. They kept running but stopped when they saw another group of guards coming toward them from both directions, "How the hell do thay have so many guards to spare?!" Blondie yelled. Frankly, he was wondering the same thing.
Annabeth was exhausted. How were they supposed to get out of here now? She looked around and a worn out wooden water tank caught her eye. She grabbed the rope dangling from it and pulled as hard as she could. And to her luck, the tank started to tip over. It made a loud creaking noise which pulled the attention of the guards toward it. She made use of the momentary distraction and grabbed Percy's hand, pulling it and running toward the small opening which seemed to lead out.
The tank started to fall, the water rushing out of it as it hit the other side of the cliff and broke in half. The pieces of wood fell on a group of guards, instantly killing them. Annabeth and Percy ran toward the small cave as fast as they could, just making it in before a chunk of rocks fall in front of it, blocking majority of the water from coming in. But the other side was also sealed with rockfall.
"What do we do now?!" Percy yelled in panic when he saw the sealed exit. Annabeth was dumbfounded. Her plan only went as far as this. She felt water coming in and looked at Percy in panic, who had the same expression plastered on his face. He went to the other side and tried to pull the small rocks out but it was in vain and only resulted in him cutting his palm in attempt to move them. They were sealed too tightly.
The water had reached to their chest now. "Fuck!" Percy cursed and she felt the chill of the water reach the skin on her collarbones. "Are we going to die now? Is this it?" Percy asked her, tears filling his eyes but she wasn't able to answer him. Just looking at him as she felt the water rise till her neck. Maybe this was really the end.

While I delight in making cool and outlandish characters in BG3, I do have one relatively "boring" character. No halfling bard with a side-shave and edgy piercings, this one—Alethra Emberfell is a human noble who escaped an arranged political marriage (with the help of her betrothed, who was actually a cool guy and didn't want anything to do with it, either) to run off and go adventuring. Disdainful of the current state of her house, she seeks to bring back some of the honor her name once signified: her great-great-great-grandfather and equally-great grandmother were adventurers themselves, and it was their heroism that earned them passage into the aristocracy... not the sort of political maneuvering and scheming that Alethra's parents, aunts, and uncles engage in.
Actually this is based on one of the earliest characters I made for Fifth Edition as a pen-and-paper creation, although I've never gotten around to, well, actually playing as her. She fights with a rapier and a whip, primarily, using the "Duelling" style. For ranged combat, she wields a bow... though she isn't averse to chucking a few daggers.
That said, Alethra's "build," as it were, is actually geared toward leveraging her aristocratic background into a strong talent for leadership and social savvy. Her Dexterity is 16 at level one, but so is her Charisma; her Intelligence and Wisdom are decent at 14 and 12, respectively, giving her a bit of an edge in insight, investigation, and other such things. Her Constitution is unremarkable at a flat 10 and Strength, being quite unnecessary for a noble lady (and also for a Dex Fighter), is her dump stat at 9.
(This is all point-buy and with the pen-and-paper game's rule where humans get +1 to everything because wow so adaptable. In BG3, her stats would follow a similar curve but aren't quite so flexible.)
At Level 3, Alethra turns these talents down the path of the Battle Master, with her first maneuvers being Commander's Strike, Maneuvering Attack, and Commanding Presence. The maneuvers she picks at subsequent level-ups adhere to this theme of social/leadership advantage on and off the battlefield: Tactical Assessment, Bait and Switch, Distracting Strike, and so on.
In terms of personality, Alethra is the type to at least attempt to draw her party members out of their shells, where applicable, and learn as much as she can about them. While honorable on the whole, Alethra is still willing to bend the law to do the right thing and would get along relatively well even with mischievous and roguish party members. She also has an interest in learning skills outside of fighting, and would be inclined to ask her party members to teach her the tricks of their trade while they travel. While her class build remains strongly focused on Fighter levels, what she learns of magic or other such things might manifest later in a campaign in her Feat choices. She might take Ritual Caster or Magic Initiate if she learns some magic from a wizard, for example, or might take Skilled and gain Sleight of Hand proficiency or proficiency with a musical instrument, if she makes friends with a rogue or a bard.
I'm quite fond of this character concept, and really do want to play as her in a tabletop campaign one of these days... but, alas, for now, I must content myself with Baldur's Gate III.

OOC: Been wanting to draw for a while, decided to stretch my drawing muscled with some attempted art of an elf belonging to @quelfabulous, the wonderful person who got me into WoW rp, and the Sunguard community. So, here is Felo’thore Novastorm (formerly Emberfell), from @brothersemberfell. I know there’s a bunch wrong with it, but I’m still learning, and practice makes improvement. On the other hand, though, I’m at least a LITTLE proud of the attempt at a little celestial fire. Thank goodness for the smudge tool.

The way I just did 30 points of damage with two hits in Warhammer Fantasy.
That’s actually insane with how low the numbers in this game are.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
Fall in love, break the curse.
Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year, Prince Rhen, the heir of Emberfall, thought he could be saved easily if a girl fell for him. But that was before he turned into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. Before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.
Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, Harper learned to be tough enough to survive. When she tries to save a stranger on the streets of Washington, DC, she's pulled into a magical world.
Break the curse, save the kingdom.
Harper doesn't know where she is or what to believe. A prince? A curse? A monster? As she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what's at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.
YA Fantasy Beauty and the Beast retelling. Read that sentence again. If you do not like YA, Fantasy, or B&B, don’t read this book. Also, if you only like one of those things, don’t read this book. This is a story based on a similar concept of Beauty and the Beast – man is cursed into being a monster until his little monster heart can find love and break the spell, woman is brought to castle against her will and eventually falls in love with said beast. That is where the comparisons end. Harper is not a silent, book/library loving beauty like Belle and Rhen is not some hidden away beast quietly living his life away in his castle. Harper is a badass from modern day Washington DC who is kidnapped and brought to Emberfell by Grey, the head guardsman to Prince Rhen (did I mention she also has Cerebral Palsy? Amazing rep). Every “season” Rhen turns into a deadly terrifying monster who brings death and destruction upon his kingdom. This book is YA which essentially means they’re teenagers.
I loved this book. Did I love it enough to stop what I’m doing to read the sequel? No. But I did love it. I liked Harper’s badass-ness and, despite his beastly issues, I really liked Rhen. I appreciated that it wasn’t a “I don’t care if I’ve been kidnapped, I love him at first sight” situation. Harper hated Rhen at first because…. I mean…he had her kidnapped. But she grows to appreciate him for what he is and grows to love him.
If all of the above sounds good to you, pick this book up. You will not be disappointed.
4 starts.
Brigid Kemmerer is the New York Times bestselling author of dark and alluring Young Adult novels like A Curse So Dark and Lonely, More Than We Can Tell, and Letters to the Lost (Bloomsbury), as well as paranormal YA stories like The Elemental Series and Thicker Than Water (Kensington).
