the gaang’s kids and aang’s death headcanons
- all the gaang’s kids have gathered on air temple island the day after the big public memorial service for aang. the gaang themselves have all gone to sit in the garden and reminisce and the younger generation have been left together
- lin put herself in charge of the food (not making it, she can’t cook for shit, but ensuring everyone got some and stayed hydrated). she figures it’s the least she can do to support aang’s kids and obviously su wasn’t going to show up and help
- lin has been doing her best to support tenzin in his grief, but during the days between his death and funeral he has started to pull away. she knows it’s because she has said she won’t have kids and he’s feeling the weight of the entire air nation on his back. she doesn’t say anything and he doesn’t either
- when kya comes sobbing to lin in the kitchen she just holds her, tightly at first and then gently, reverently, and lets the tears soak into her shirt. (she hasn’t worn her police armor in days. saikhan convinced her to take a leave of absence for at least a few weeks)
- kya has been off traveling the world for many years at this point and lin has missed her so much that now that she’s back and in her arms she doesn’t know how she’s ever going to let go
- but she does. and then lin wipes the tears off kya’s face and takes her hands and says, “let’s get out of here. all of us”
- she leads her out to the living room and gathers bumi and tenzin and izumi to tell them her plan
- they all get on appa (tenzin spends some time gently convincing the poor bison) and take off. when they finally land on the black sand beach of ember island none of them are crying anymore
- while tenzin meditates on one of the low cliffs overlooking the water, lin and kya set out to make a big sand castle using a combination of sand and waterbending, both feeling younger than they have in years. bumi and izumi take a walk down the beach, arm in arm, his head leaning on her shoulder
- when they decide to play volleyball with a net they find in the attic of (what’s now izumi’s) beach house its the first time any of them have really smiled in two weeks
- bumi complains the entire game that tenzin and lin are cheating with their bending. lin scoffs and protests that yes, izumi had just tripped on that pile of sand and tenzin swears that it was a natural gust of seaside wind and kya giggles.
- they all loosen up as they play and tease one another and the distraction and laughter is the most welcome balm
- it’s not the same loud raucous laughter of their visits to the beach so many years ago as children, but it’s enough to shake them out of their grief for a couple of hours
#the gaang’s kids#lin beifong#bumi#kya ii#kya#izumi#tenzin#kyalin#aang’s death#ember island#based on my friends comforting my childhood best friend when her parent passed away#run away to the beach it makes everything better#even if just for a moment#i made myself cry

A personal headcanon that, after Sozin’s Comet, the Ember Island Players were going to stop their productions of The Boy in the Iceberg, but Avatar Aang and Firelord Zuko encouraged them to keep it in their repertoire, and not to change a thing.
Years later, the children of Team Avatar took a vacation to Ember Island and simply HAD to see the play… and of course they HAD to dress up to show what big fans they were (except for Lin, who didn’t feel like it)
Bonus:
Special details under the cut
Costumes: Kya is Katara, Tenzin is Aang, Bumi is Sokka, Izumi is Zuko, and Suyin is Toph
The kids just scoured their wardrobes and put things together that kind of looked like the character’s costumes
Only exception was Suyin as Toph, Bumi and Kya made her costume for her
Tenzin had Kya paint his arrow on, but he’s just wearing his normal clothes
Izumi’s gonna get called out during intermission for putting the scar on the “wrong” side
Before she left the house, Zuko was trying to tell her “no, put it on your right eye” and she didn’t understand because... it’s on his left eye. Why would she put it on the other side?
Suyin doesn’t care about the play at all, she’s been pacified with a box of fire gummies
Izumi and Bumi kept laughing the whole time
Kya and Tenzin just watched in concern, but even Kya burst out laughing a few times
Lin was about to fall asleep the entire time
Suyin is sitting on a booster seat because she’s too small (she’s like 4 or 5 here)
I don’t care if Kya and Bumi said Aang never took them to Ember Island, I’m gonna imagine Izumi and Zuko invited all the kids over to their beach house

18. "You have beautiful soul"! - Lin/Kya II, please?
During their family vacation on the Ember Island, Lin and Kya shared a room. Their schedule was pretty much the same, that's why it struck Kya when Lin only came back to their room when she was already after a shower and ready to go to sleep.
"Oh, so I won't sleep alone tonight?" Kya joked.
"What?" Lin asked confused.
"You were gone for so long! I thought you got kidnapped or something!"
"Kya, that's absurd," Lin serious with a serious tone.
"So, where were you?"
Lin hesitated with the answer,
"I um... Your dad offered a um... a spiritual training..."
"And you agreed?" Kya asked excited.
"Well, I um... yeah," Lin said with a blush. "I thought that, you know, you, Tenzin and even Bumi know this stuff, so... why not? But please, don't tell my mum. She'll probably say I'm nuts."
"I can see that," Kya chuckled. "So, what was the first lesson?"
"It was aura reading. He explained the basics and I tried, but I didn't seem to grasp it..."
"Try it on me," Kya cut Lin off.
"But I... I didn't manage to read anyone yet-"
"Trust me," Kya said getting up. She grabbed Lin's hands and faced her. "Don't focus on the details, okay? Let the image blur and then notice the colors. You got this," she smiled. Lin did as she was told. After a couple of minutes Kya asked, "What color is my aura?"
"Violet? I think..." she said with uncertainty.
"Yeah, that likely," Kya smiled. "Wanna know what color yours is?" Lin nodded. "It's green."
"What does it mean?" she asked.
"It means you're a hardworking and responsible person," Kya said softly. "You care about others and you love nature. You have a beautiful soul, Lin Beifong."
Lin, to hide a blush, let go of Kya's hands and turned around to gather her things for the shower. Kya sat down on her bed and watched the earthbender, who rushed to the door. She stopped at the door, turned around and said,
"I think your soul is also beautiful."

Impavid here! Okay, this is pretty amazing! I do need to make a few corrections (Zaichun was never king; his older sister Guang was the queen - the Hou-Ting killed by the Red Lotus, for example) and sure there are a few missing characters (how could there not be, there are so damn many) but even still, AMAZING.
Also, I laughed a lot at your little comments, @tortoisesforhire. “Budding lepidopterist.” “Tried to scold Sayuri once.” (Tried being the operative word, good luck on that one.) THAT MADE MY DAY.
I can also add in some of the missing names, for sure.
Anybody else? Please add in. I know @peoniequeen is also making a list just as I know there are a lot more characters. (God help us all. But me. Especially me.)
Once this is all complete I’ll create a page for it here on Tumblr and post it permanently. Also, I think I can post it on AO3 as well.

Summary: Korra just came back from studying abroad last semester. She fell in love with Asami the semester before she left. It’s been months since she saw her friends and the love of her life. She never got around to telling Asami how she felt because she always knew Asami was straight. In the months with Korra being gone, Asami has fallen in love with Iroh II. No one felt like telling Korra about this because they didn’t want to ruin her study abroad experience. Asami had kept it from her because she wanted to tell her in person. Korra is in for a treat this school year. Will jealousy ruin the friendship? Will Asami ever stop being oblivious and figure out Korra is madly in love with her? Or will Korra accidentally slip and tell her when she’s drinking her heart out.

Angst prompt 26 for kyalin (“I miss the old you.”)! :)
Thank you @laviedeviv! I know this took a while but I had some personal things come up, but I hope you like it 😊💜
“Kya there is no way I’m getting in the water with you.”
Lin wasn’t going to admit that it made her slightly uneasy that she wasn’t able to see through to the bottom. The sight of the black sand was absent.
The water off the coast of Ember Island during the day was crystal clear. It gave the illusion of looking through glass and being able to see what was swimming below her made Lin much more at ease.
Although at just after midnight, the moon high above them, the water turned reflective, mirror like. The spots that weren’t so affected, like the shaded area underneath the dock the metal bender currently resided on, was dark. It gave off a foreboding feeling, the inky black seemingly able to swallow her whole.
“Come on, Linny,” Kya drawled playfully, her hands and legs swirling in lazy circles.
Lin’s feet weren’t even dangling over the dock like they normally would. They were tucked securely underneath herself, the worn wood still warm from the day in the sun.
The younger woman watched as her friend slowly leant back in the water, her hair becoming dark as the water rushed to meet it. Honestly, water always seemed to be in such a hurry to reach Kya, it was as if her native element needed her as much as she needed it. The next thing to catch Lin’s eye was Kya’s current state of undress.
She felt her mouth go dry.
How did she not realize that she was completely naked.
The metal bender tried to swallow, but no matter how hard she tried, she wasn’t able to alleviate the lump that formed. The moonlight, less harsh and more forgiving than that of the sun, gave the water bender’s complexion an ethereal glow. It followed Kya’s supple curves, caressing her as if it were her lover; Lin was mesmerized.
As Kya pulled herself from the water and right side up, a knowing grin spread across her lips. She knew exactly what she was doing to Lin. But she continued on unperturbed by her companion’s continued silence.
“I miss the old you,” she sighed dramatically, “the Lin I knew when we were younger would have already been in the water with me.”
Shaking herself from the trance Lin laughed softly, a soft snort following.
“The Lin you knew would have also have jumped off Appa into said water,” she shrugged, rolling her eyes.
Kya didn’t miss a beat, splashing water in the younger woman’s direction, “I could got get Oogi…’
Lin laughed out loud this time, “Spirits no! Could you imagine if Tenzin caught us?!”
She eyed the water bender as she swam closer to the dock. Lin’s eyes trailed down her arms following the path of the water droplets as Kya lifted herself up. She gently placed her upper body on her folded arms, her lower body still dangling in the warm water.
“That’s true…he’s not as forgiving as Dad was.”
Lin snorted again, that was an understatement. She couldn’t help but smile at the happiness shining from Kya’s eyes, they were so luminous in the light of the moon. The blue so bright and enhanced by the soft lines that appeared when Kya smiled.
Lin had agreed to accompany her lover tonight due to the full moon; it always made the older woman restless, sleep was almost always impossible on nights like these.
Kya raised herself on her arms once again, leaning leisurely forward, attempting to bring herself closer to Lin. The metal bender felt herself being pulled in, the attraction to Kya, it seems, was not for the water alone.
Just as their lips were about to touch, just room enough for the air between them, Lin felt Kya’s hand grip her upper arm tightly. It was then that Lin realized she had fucked up and let her guard down.
The next thing she knew, she was breaking the surface, sputtering water inelegantly. She pushed her now drenched hair out of her eyes roughly, looking at her lover with absolute disdain.
Kya’s response was only a slight shrug and a shit eating grin as she slowly tread water once again.
“Shoulda came in when I asked you to.”

KyaLin fluff 12, please ❤️
Obviously this is AU, set in modern day because uhhhh lockscreen lol
———————————————————————————
Kya was waiting for Lin at their usual spot in the restaurant. She loved sitting under the hanging plants and Lin loved the view the full length widows gave her of the city. Kya had been on shift for thirty-six hours straight and her wife had been rotating through the different shifts at the precinct. A nasty bout of the seasonal flu had swept through the department, it was a wonder Lin herself hadn’t contracted it yet.
They hadn’t seen one another except for when one was arriving home and the other leaving. She missed the hushed presence of her wife, the gentle and comforting nature Lin exuded in private. They needed this time together.
Kya’s head was turned slightly, her warm skin glowing in the fading sunlight, the shadows cast on her hair making it seem darker than it normally was. She could feel a pair of eyes on her, familiar and with purpose.
As Lin made her way to the table, she could see that Kya’s eyes were closed, basking in the last rays of the day, so at peace. She had missed her wife, terribly.
As she finally reached the table, she locked eyes with her wife as she turned her head, Kya’s smile lifting up the corners of her mouth. This wasn’t the smile that she normally wore when bonding with her niblings or the open, toothy smile she wore when reminiscing with Bumi. No, this was one reserved solely for Lin. This was the one that produced the dimple in her left cheek, the one that radiated warmth and made her eyes glow.
‘Hi Sweetheart,’ she cooed throatily, presenting her cheek as Lin grasped the back of her chair, pressing a chaste kiss there.
The metalbender’s hand was what lingered, unnoticeable to those around them, but Kya felt every inch as it dragged across her back. Lin deposited herself in the chair across from the healer and smirked at the slight blush adorning her wife’s cheeks
‘Sorry I’m late,’ she murmured gently, picking up the menu.
Kya hummed, a dismissal of sorts, but not one of anger or resentment. She knew how hectic Lin’s job was, she had accepted the fact when she agreed to marry the Chief. She watched silently as the younger woman perused the menu, a soft glare appearing on her face.
‘I don’t know why you even look,’ Kya giggled, ‘you order the same thing every time, Chief.’
At the use of her title it was Lin’s turn to blush, much more obvious on her pale skin. Kya smiled to let her wife know she was only teasing and her grin grew wider as the other woman rubbed the back of her neck bashfully.
‘No reason to switch it up, it’s always delicious.’ She shrugged slightly.
‘Of course, Sweetheart.’
Lin sighed at the use of the pet name and somewhere in the back of her mind, a little voice told Kya not push her luck. She looked down at her own menu, wondering what the special was.
After a few minutes of contemplative silence, Lin interrupted her thoughts. She scooted her chair back, rising effortlessly.
‘I’m going to run to the restroom, order for me if the waiter returns before I do?’
‘Of course, dear,’ Kya didn’t look up from her menu, but she heard the snort of amusement Lin let loose.
The waiter did in fact return before her wife, so Kya ordered for them both. As the waiter walked away, the screen of Lin’s phone lit up next to her silverware. Kya craned her head, glancing at the screen to see if it was important. What she saw made her gasp…the background looked familiar.
Kya glanced up quickly, caught as Lin slumped in her chair once again. The metalbender glanced at her wife and then back to her phone, one eyebrow raised.
‘Did it ring while I was gone?’
Kya pondered how to answer.
‘No,’ she hedged, ‘just a regular notification.’
Lin nodded and sipped her water, the condensation on her glass making it slippery.
‘Am I your lockscreen?’
Lin choked on her water, coughing as Kya grinned at her impishly.
‘What?’ she knew what Kya had asked, she just needed a moment.
The older woman quirked her eyebrow in a challenge. Lin sighed and then laughed quietly, reaching for her phone as she did so. Kya could see her fingers sliding over the screen.
Lin continued, ‘You weren’t supposed to see that.’
Kya craned her neck, trying to see what her wife was doing, until Lin flipped her phone to face her. The picture that was displayed took Kya’s breathe away; she was curled up in their sheets, the white contrasting sharply with the dark skin of her shoulders. It was clear to the healer that if it wasn’t for the sheets, it would be a much more intimate picture of her.
She was laying on her stomach, left cheek laid on the pillow and her hand sticking out from under it. She was cradling her other arm to her chest, creasing the sheets, making an indent where the valley between her breasts was located.
Her face was serene in the morning sun spilling in from the window she knew was just out of frame. Her gray hair shone, looking almost silver. She looked ethereal, like one of those women in the paintings that adorned the gallery’s Lin loved so much.
She connected eyes with her wife as the phone was lowered. She could feel the beginnings of moisture in her eyes and bit her lip gently, trying to quell the familiar emotion in her chest.
‘Of course you are Kya,’ Lin’s green eyes were bright, one side of her mouth quirked upward.
How did she ever manage to find this woman?

Ok guys, I deleted the original asks by accident but here is what the Nonnie wanted. I couldn't choose either, so naturally I did all three lol
Thank you so much for the prompt! It was really fun to write a Lin x reader story, I’ve never had the opportunity to write one 💜
If you guys enjoy this let me know, because I could definitely see continuing this story.
Fluff 9: “Are we on a date right now?”
Fluff 11: “Are you flirting with me?” “You finally noticed?”
Kisses 13: When One Person’s Face Is Scrunched Up, And The Other One Kisses Their Lips/Nose/Forehead
I had been in Republic City for twenty years…and it still never ceased to fill me with me with a sense of awe. Awe at the height of the buildings, the satomobiles that would glide up and down the roads, at all hours of the night. It was home and it was peaceful, even in its most overwhelming moments.
But in these early morning moments, when the sun had yet to rise and most of the city was sleeping, I understood why this bustling cosmopolitan city was the home that my small village had never been. I came from a small coastal village, one that was a stop for small vessels traveling North, a place stop, refuel, and perhaps rest for the night. Nothing more and nothing less. It was like the colonies that made up the city she now inhabited; different cultures with different traditions thriving as one, albeit with a little less conflict.
I could just see the beginnings of the sunrise peeking over the clouds rolling off the water; I was much later than I normally was. My internal clock was off and decided that I needed an extra hour of sleep; whether this is true I will neither confirm nor deny. I hadn’t realized just how late I was until I rounded the corner and began walking the last stretch towards my shop I cursed inwardly as I saw the silhouette of a person leant against the brick, ankles crossed in front of them.
Chief of Police Lin Beifong was one of my more loyal customers, she showed every morning, before the sun, to retrieve tea or coffee, whatever she was in the mood for, along with a few egg custards tarts. Besides the occasional trip for work or the more common injury, she would stroll into my shop shortly after I opened it myself. As I came closer, I could see the gleam of the lamp light on her metal armor, the yellow of the trim and gold of her badge blinding. I riffled through my bag, grasping the ribbon with the shop key on it, reaching my hand out and fluidly inserting the key into the lock, turning it softly.
“Sorry Chief,” I mumbled, pushing the door open slightly and gesturing for her to proceed me.
“Good morning, Y/N,’ she grumbled softly, the look on her face was a mix of concern and curiosity.
I flicked the lights on, wincing slightly at the harsh artificial light. I could feel her eyes on me as I hung my bag on its usual hook and drew my apron off the other, looping the top over my head and crossing the ties in the back before settling them in front. As I moved behind the counter, reaching for the pastry box and parchment paper, her voice reached my ears, a little louder this time.
“It’s alright,’ she insisted, “is everything ok, Y/N?”
I waved my hand dismissively, gesturing that everything was fine.
Even if it wasn’t she didn’t need to know that she was just making idle conversation. She didn’t need to know that I had been having trouble sleeping. This wasn’t new for me, it’s how my anxieties tended to manifest themselves. She wasn’t truly interested, and she didn’t deserve to be blindsided with my problems, we were friends in a loose sense of the word. She came by my shop every morning and I provided her with her daily vices. She would thank me, and the cycle would start again the next day…nothing to write home about.
“I’m fine,” I insisted, “are you feeling coffee this morning or tea? I have this new blend of chai from Kyoshi Island that is amazing with or without milk…”
As I turned to face the pastry case, opening it so I could slip two tarts into the cardboard box, my eyes locked with those of the metalbender’s; I could tell that she wasn’t going to let the subject drop. Her arms were crossed against her chest, the metal creaking intermittently, the pressure from either her bending or muscles shifting minutely.
She tilted her head then, considering me carefully, not just the question of coffee or tea, but almost as if she was assessing if I was telling the truth. Her eyes traveled along my body and suddenly I felt slightly self-conscious. I smooth the apron down over my hips, the thick sweater I wore underneath unexpectedly feeling suffocating, the messy bun on the crown of my head mildly embarrassing, and the creases of sleep most likely still adorning my cheek mortifying.
“Chief?” I gently questioned, drawing her out of whatever thoughts were floating around in her head.
She looked at her metal boots, scuffing the floor a little, the red tint of a blush could barely be seen on her cheeks. I busied myself with removing the tarts from the pastry case, trying desperately to hide the shy smile that now graced my lips. I was trying to give her time to regroup, for her to act as if she wasn’t just caught staring.
“How about the chai,” her voice was soft when she finally answered, “I’m sure coffee will come later in the day.”
I nodded as I closed the pastry box and turned to the back counter once again. I filled the kettle methodically and then began to heat the metal with my bending, a small flame produced in my palm, I could feel the material heating as I increased the heat marginally. I could hear the person behind me shifting slightly, the creak of her metal uniform more pronounced this time.
With the water a near perfect temperature, I carefully poured the scalding water into the to go cup, gently covering the tea bag. The warm smell of cinnamon and cardamom hit me instantly, I in haled slightly. I secured the lid and turned back to the front facing the Chief again and slid both objects across the counter towards her.
“On the house Chief,” I smiled sweetly, “again I’m sorry I was so late this morning.”
She froze as she was drawing her wallet out of her pocket, her eyes narrow imperceptibly.
“Nonsense,” she claimed, “you open the shop early for me every morning, let me at least pay you.”
My smile grew, “Nope,” the last syllable said with an audible pop.
Through all the years and all our interactions, I knew that the Chief of Police knew exactly how stubborn I was, I rivaled her in that regard. Like when I secretly created a pastry spread in the office oof certain metalbender, not wanting to draw too much attention to the gesture. She had tried to interrogate me into who had hired me, yet my lips remained sealed; Councilman Tenzin had just wanted to surprise his friend on her birthday. She deserved that much at least.
Or the time the storefront window had been broken. I refused to let the police department print the shop and comb through the wreckage for evidence, it was going to take too long, and I had customers to feed. What was gone was gone and it was time to move on and rebuild. After that incident, we both developed a certain type of respect for one another.
The stubbornness also showed on the nights when we’d occasionally play pai sho with one another. The lights in the shop would stay lit for hours, the Chief encouraging me to hurry up and decide about a specific move at times; I wasn’t to be rushed to say the least.
She regarded me quietly, I could see the wheels in her brain, trying to come up with some sort of a compromise. Her lips quirked slightly, and I knew she had reached a decision.
“Fine,” she relented, “but I have a request.”
I tilted my head curiously; through the years the Chief had brought me recipes to try, and I was interested in what she had in store for me this time. It was a challenge that wasn’t exactly acknowledged between us.
I nodded my head, “Sure thing, Chief.”
“I’m entertaining someone tonight in my condo, and I have it on good authority that they love red bean buns.”
This time my own face twisted in a smile. She knew I made the best in the city…most certainly because they were my favorite.
“Would you like to pick them up or have them delivered?”
At this question she seemed to hesitate, I knew how much easier it would be for her if they were delivered, but I also knew what a private person she was. She was still weighing the pros and cons of each option when I interjected kindly.
“I can do the delivery Chief, on my way home.”
I watched her shoulders slump in relief and then heard a faint “Thank you,” escape her lips.
My smile grew at the relief in her eyes, “Is there a specific time?”
She bit her lip subtly…well that was something.
“Is six, ok?” she questioned.
I had a few custom orders to fulfill, but those could all be done by noon. That left me plenty of time to not only create the shop inventory for the next day but the Chief’s order as well. I nodded and reached to the side of the cash register, producing an ink pen and notepad for her to scribble her address on. As The Chief pulled a few bills out of her wallet, I couldn’t help the flutter I felt at her smile, this one was more like the ones at the end of our pai sho nights, when she’d wish me well as I strode off down the street.
She laid the currency on top of the note pad and gently pushed them towards me. I gathered, the money and began to count her change before I realized she was already heading in the direction of the door. She turned to look over her shoulder, piercing green eyes connecting with my own, a mischievous glint visible.
“Oh, and Y/N? After all the time we’ve known one another, I think it’s time you called me Lin.”
And with that she slipped through the door, the gentle ringing of the bell the only indicator someone had once been standing there.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The day passed by in a blur, working on the custom orders…and maybe a little of daydreaming with it. My longtime friend and shop manager Kiki was teasing me relentlessly…she always did when I regaled her with my encounters of the famous Republic City Chief of Police. After the second batch of puff pastry that had to be thrown away because I had over worked it, she told me not so subtly to get my head out of the clouds.
Eli, my assistant baker, chuckled softly and his smile in the egg white he was currently trying to whip. The sound of the wire whisk making a metallic tink every time it met the side of the glass mixing bowl. They gave each other a knowing look they thought I wouldn’t notice; they did that a lot when it came to me and the Chief. I sighed and shook my head softly.
The nerves that had started as a flutter in my belly this morning were slowly transforming into tight knots. I had never been to the Chief’s…no, Lin’s apartment before. We were friends, but not on that level, we weren’t that intimate. It was no secret to myself or the two friends who worked with me what the extent of my feelings for the metalbender.
We got along well, more than likely due to the extreme hours we both tended to keep. She would be up well into the night catching criminals and examining crime scenes. I was up experimenting with new tastes and pastry types, sometimes sleeping in the back office behind the kitchen. We were both undoubtedly devoted to our crafts, honing them through the years until they became second nature to us.
It doesn’t matter. We are from two completely different worlds, two completely different upbringings, and two completely different people. She is the daughter of Toph Beifong for spirits sake. She was engaged to Councilman Tenzin at one point. She calls the late Avatar, the late Councilman Sokka, and Firelord Zuko her uncles. She refers to Master Katara and Kyoshi Warrior Suki her aunts. She has been chief of Police longer than I have been in the city. She was an heir to the Beifong fortune and empire.
I grew up in a small coastal village, selling my pastries to make ends meet. I left the village to come to the city, escaping an abusive father and an absent mother, when I was only seventeen. I was lucky enough to find a job in a bakery whose owner took pity on me, and then later sold me the business.
We had nothing in common, but I couldn’t help but feel the sense of anticipation in my belly. Seeing the Chief, in any capacity, could make me feel as if I was walking on air. She was unbelievably kind and so compassionate, contrary to the grumpy exterior she exuded. She was always bringing me a book that she thought I’d like…sometimes it was flowers that she said would brighten up the bakery. Other times, like when we were playing pai sho, she’d bring take out, knowing that I was notorious for forgetting to eat when I was busy (Pot? Kettle?).
What if she was entertaining a passing dignitary, on their way back home?
What if she was on a date?
I’m not sure if I could handle that.
As soon as I thought the words, I chastised myself; I had no claim to the Chief, she wasn’t mine and I wasn’t hers. I usually could keep a better handle on my thoughts and feelings regarding the metalbender, but today I seemed to have been doomed from the start, the tardiness this morning was throwing everything off.
By the time I was tying the green ribbon on the box contained the Chief’s buns, I looked to the clock surprised to see that it was half past five. If I wanted the delivery to be on time I’d have to leave soon. I pushed the door to the kitchen gently and told Eli I was getting to leave.
He raised his hand in a gesture that at once told me that he had heard me and something like a dismissal. I chuckled when I saw the flour fall from his fingers, creating clouds in the air, coating the floor of the kitchen in a sea of white.
I moved towards the hooks on the wall, listening as the kitchen door swung shut. As I replaced my apron, I fluidly removed my tote, gathering the box from the counter and placing it securely inside. I continued through the shop, closing the door behind me muffling the sound of the bell as my key turned and secured the lock.
The sunset was just beginning to pink the sky over Yue Bay, the wind collecting the moisture as it rolled over it and through the city. I drew my sweater closer to ward off the slight chill and set off in the direction of the Chief’s building.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I approached the building, I couldn’t help but gasp. While I had walked by it several times on my way to and from the shop, I had never given it a second thought. I never thought I’d get to see what lay inside. It was tall and modern looking, the metal on the outside reflecting the colors of the setting sun, a revolving door lead into the lobby where I was greeted by a doorman.
“How can I help you, Miss?” he questioned politely.
“Umm,” I began, still a little unsure, “I have a delivery for Chief Beifong?”
He smiled slightly, “Miss Y/N?”
At my nod, his smile grew, and he led me towards another metal door, presumedly the elevator.
“The Chief is expecting you, her condo is on the tenth floor, door number six.”
I nodded again as the doors opened silently and stepped over the threshold cautiously. The doorman waved and the doors slid closed just as silently. The ride wasn’t long, but it was just enough for the flutters in my belly to return. I could feel the machinery come to a stop and was already striding through the doors before the fully opened.
The lengthy hallway beyond was plainly decorated in muted greys, every so often this was disrupted by a potted plant. The doors I passed we sporadic, but each had a number, I counted until I reached door six. Glancing at my watch I confirmed I was just one time and rose my fist to knock on the door, I was surprised to find it metal. I chuckled at this, but was I really that surprised?
A few moments passed before I could hear the lock disengage and the door swing inward slightly. Although there was no one beyond the threshold and I hesitated before a familiar voice rang out from somewhere in the apartment.
“Come on in, I’m just in the kitchen, follow the hallway.”
I bit my lip; I wasn’t sure this was appropriate, I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be here. Surely shed be in the middle of cooking and her company would be with her, I could just drop the buns and run.
I slipped through the door and shut it smoothly; I bent at the waist removing my shoes and retrieving the pastry box from my bag before venturing farther down the hallway. My steps were silent as I walked slowly, the stone of the floors cold through the wool of my socks. At last, I rounded the corner of the hallway and stopped short.
I was in a gorgeous open plan apartment, the kitchen, living room, dining room, and breakfast nook were all combined with no walls. The back half of the apartment was completely windows, which gave whoever was looking a stunning view of Yue Bay, part of the mountains, and Air Temple Island, all a glow from the setting sun. The interior walls of the sitting room were covered in floor to ceiling bookshelves, a well-worn leather couch and two matching armchairs. One of which had a book perched precariously on the arm and a light grey blanket laid against the back.
I turned to see the large kitchen, dominated by a large island in the middle and a rack of hanging pots and pans above it. Stood at the stove, with her back to me was the Chief, black slacks stretched taut across her hips and backside, a forest green sweater, not that dissimilar to the one I wore, hung loose at the waist. She turned to look at me over her shoulder and I was speechless…well more than I already had been.
“Y/N,” she smiled, my name rolling off her tongue, “how was the rest of your day?”
She moved the pot on the stove to the back burner and turned to face me fully. She drew her arms in front of her, crossing them, but gently resting them on her abdomen. I paused before answering, confused, and overwhelmed as the knots in my stomach intensified.
“Um, ok…uneventful after this morning actually.”
She hummed, the sound rushing straight to my head. It was delicious, I wanted her to make the sound again. I shook my head faintly, trying to clear the thoughts that had come to my mind without my consent.
Her smile grew just a fraction, “Would you like something to drink? Wine? Water? Tea?”
The look on my face must have been a sight because she laughed out loud. The sound was warm and low, amused, and sensual all at once.
“What’s the matter?” she questioned.
I swallowed hard, “Aren’t you expecting company?”
Her smile faltered a bit. She tilted her head like she had this morning, examining my face closely.
“I am…” she drawled.
I nodded again, glancing down at my socks, patting my hair nervously.
“I should probably head out then…”
The Chief was still looking at me, and this time I could see the realization come into her eyes. She looked down at her feet, shuffling the bare appendages self-consciously, her arms tightening on her chest. I frowned at that; she was obviously uncomfortable.
“Something wrong Chief?”
She flinched, imperceptibly at the title, if I hadn’t been watching her so closely, I would have missed it.
She looked up quickly, her eyes wide before she could school her face. She plastered on a smile, this one a lot less genuine than the others I’d been receiving. I walked towards the island separating us, placing the box of red bean buns on the counter, waiting patiently for her to answer.
She rubbed the back of her neck; it must be a nervous tick of hers.
“No, she,” said quietly, “I was just…well I mean…I was hoping you’d join me for dinner?”
Stunned did not even begin to describe what I was. I could feel my body physically shutting down, the noises in the apartment began to fade, becoming muffled and distant. The only thing that brought me back to reality was the murmur of my name.
“Y/N,” she whispered, “I am so sorry…I didn’t…I thought...”
The Chief trailed off, biting her lip while trying to gain control over her own emotions. She wasn’t looking at me anymore, her cheeks pink from embarrassment. It was that something clicked in my mind.
“You were flirting with me?”
She looked up and as we connected eyes, a small smile began to show, she shook her head in the affirmative slowly.
“I have been for quite a while, and you finally noticed.”
I swallowed, trying to force the lump in my throat to go down, trying to regain my composure in the face of such a startling realization.
I looked around the open space once more, noticing the candles that were perched on every available surface. Finally registering the soft music floating out of the record player in the corner by the bookshelves. Then my eyes finally landed on the dining table, where two places were set, not overtly elegant but romantic, nonetheless.
I looked back at the Chief, who had made her way around the island while padding on soundless feet and was now standing directly Infront of me. I felt my eyes widen in recognition.
“Are we on a date right now?”
Her answering smile, now full in her face, made slight lines appear at the corner of her eyes. Her tone was soft, melodic as she answered my question.
“Only if you want it to be,” she intoned quietly, “you weren’t exactly aware of the situation until a few moments ago, so I’ll understand if you say no.
While I hadn’t understood the repercussions this order would bring, I wasn’t against this…I wanted this date. With starting clarity, I realized that Lin wanted this too…she wanted me.
I quirked an eyebrow, “You aren’t getting off that easy, Chief.”
She laughed again, tenderly reaching up to cup my face and brought our foreheads to rest against one another. She her nose against my own, the resulting sensation causing me to scrunch mine and her to place a gentle kiss on the bridge. Slowly she leaned down further and captured my lips.

Kyalin
Ok this goes along with my Lin HC about not wanting to be vulnerable and choosing who she shows her true emotions.
I think that Lin has been aware of her feelings for women, specifically Kya, for quite a while.
That being said, she’s never talked to Kya about her feelings, there was never a need. She was content with her life in Republic City and Kya was traveling like she had always wanted. They were too different when they were younger to be completely compatible. Lin knew it was something special, something worth the wait...and wait she did.
It wasn’t until everyone returned to Republic City after defeating Unalaq that their paths crossed, Kya was on the island when Lin arrived to give Korra and Tenzin a status report from the city.
Kya looked different but that was to be expected, her once dark hair a shimmery silver, laugh lines around her eyes, well at least those were still the same. Warm and inviting, seeing through Lin like no one else had. She could feel her cheeks heat at the thought.
Kya was in the background as Lin was trying to concentrate on her conversation with Tenzin and the Avatar. Eventually she wandered away, gently laughing at Jinora and Ikki at her side. Lin tried to clear her throat, moving the lump that had founds its way from her chest.
She spent a few more minutes listening to what had become a conversation between her ex and the young woman, hand gestures and sarcasm flying like the spirits in the vines. Lin shook her head as she turned to retreat to the dock, tossing over her shoulder that some people still had jobs to do as she gently declined the invitation to dinner.
As she walked across the wooden planks of the dock she could feel a drop in her chest, the same feeling she got whenever she’d loose contact with her element.
“Did you really think you’d get to leave with out at least saying hello?”
Lin inwardly cringed, biting the inside of her cheek as the waterbender’s voice rang out, clearly behind her.
She sighed as she turned, “I figured we’d see one another at some point.”
A raised eyebrow from the older woman.
“Really?” she drawled, crossing her arms over her chest.
Lin mirrored the stance.
“I have reports at the station to finish,” she laughed mirthlessly, “if you haven’t noticed, your former student created quite a mess in my city.”
Kya smirked, “You know, I was only her teacher for a few weeks..”
“Semantics,” a dismissive wave of a slender hand.
Kya laughed softly, the corners of her mouth lifting slightly, her blue eyes shining with mirth.
Lin locked eyes with her friend as she stepped forward, clutching the arm hanging at the metalbender’s side. She could feel her breathing stop as Kya’s lips pressed gently to her scars, warm and soft, she didn’t want the sensation to stop.
“Don’t be a stranger Linny,” she cooed softly, as she squeezed once more before releasing the arm.
Kya walked backwards a few feet before spinning on her heel and continuing on the path from the dock. Lin watched as she continued her ascent, her scars tingling from the older woman’s lips.
Lin smiled slightly, an amused grunt sounding in the back of her throat. She turned to the ferry once again.
“Maybe it’s time,” she softly whispered.

Lin plz
This might be unpopular, but I don’t think that Lin is really as emotionally constipated as everyone in the fandom makes her out to be.
I think it’s more of she’s careful who she expresses her feelings to because she’s be constantly let down in her life. When she’s been made to be vulnerable, she’s been exploited.
And she isn’t bitter, she’s guarded, extremely guarded. Like her first few interactions with Tenzin in the series, I don’t think she’s pining for him, I think she genuinely missed her friend over the years.
Which leads me to my next point....she was justified in wanting to kick Su’s ass in Old Wounds. No cap.

Cultural Fusion

Bumi and Kya have decided to combine their cultural heritages in the kitchen, and Aang is horrified at the results.
Written for Aang Week 2017. Prompt - Free Day.

So this is my final entry for Aang Week, and I had a lot of fun! Thank you so much to everyone who was kind enough to like or reblog or reply to or tag my fics!!! This was a blast. :D

Sokka leaned over the saddle as Appa began his descent towards Air Temple Island. “So what kind of plant-based dish can I expect for dinner?” he asked Aang, who was seated on Appa’s head. “Noodles? Soup?”
“The Acolytes were talking about curry,” Aang answered.
Sokka’s eyes lit up. “Please tell me it’s Xing Ying’s turn in the kitchen. She’s the best at spices.”
“It’s her Fire Nation side,” Aang laughed. “And yeah, it is.”
Sokka grinned. “Fantastic! What’s for dessert?”
Aang’s smile faltered. “I have...no idea.” He looked worried as Appa approached the landing point.
Sokka looked from Aang to Tenzin, who sat beside him in the saddle.
“It’s a surprise,” Tenzin explained. “Bumi and Kya are making it.”
“Oh!” said Sokka. “Alright then. I’m sure it’ll be great, whatever it is. Aang why does your face look like that?”
“I’m not sure that I trust Bumi and Kya in the kitchen.”
“What? Why not?”
“They think that stewed sea prunes are the pinnacle of Southern Water Tribe cuisine,” Aang said as Appa made his landing, sending puffs of air and dust billowing through the courtyard. He slid off of Appa’s head and patted the bison’s cheek. “I wish I could believe they only do it to mess with me, but...no. They actually like sea prunes.”
Sokka snorted as he slid off of Appa, Tenzin gliding down behind him. “Aang, I know your hatred for sea prunes is legendary, but I swear it really is an acquired taste. Bumi and Kya seem to have acquired it.”
“I never acquired it!” Aang said, airbending the saddle off of Appa and setting it to the side.
“I like sea prunes,” Tenzin said.
Aang put his face in his hands. “All my children have betrayed me.”
Sokka laughed and slung an arm around Aang’s shoulders. “Come on, whatever Kya and Bumi have cooked up, I’m sure it’s not that bad. Right Kya?” he added.
Aang looked up to see his daughter had run into the courtyard, wearing a wide, mischievous grin. “Well, I think it’s good. Tenzin!” she said, grabbing her startled brother’s arm. “We need your help in the kitchen! Dessert’s almost ready but we need you to add the finishing touch!”
“Why do you need me?” Tenzin yelped as Kya dragged him off toward the kitchen.
“Because the secret is in the gooey center!”
“There, see?” Sokka said, watching the kids run off. “Clearly it’s just some sort of fruit pie. Nothing to worry about.”
“I guess,” Aang hedged, because the look on Kya’s face had reminded him far too much of the look Sokka got when a plan was going well. He gave Appa another pat before the bison shuffled off towards the stables, and then he and Sokka made their way to the family’s dining room.
Katara was already there, drinking tea made by Suki and reading a letter written on red-bordered stationery out loud for Toph’s benefit. “...won’t be able to leave the Fire Nation anytime soon, but you’re all invited to Ember Island this summer…”
“How was the Council?” Suki asked as Aang and Sokka took their seats, immediately pouring out two more cups of tea.
“Uneventful,” Sokka answered, slurping down the tea.
“Is that from Zuko?” Aang asked, sitting down beside Katara and dropping a quick kiss on her cheek.
“Mai, actually,” Katara said. “Zuko didn’t have time to write and she was bored.”
“Sounds accurate,” Aang laughed. “How are they?”
“Nothing new to report, really,” Toph shrugged. “Izumi’s doing well at the Academy, but she wants to study abroad. I say we bring her here. Between her, Lin, and Kya, we could get a nice pro-bending team going.”
“Tempting,” Sokka hummed.
“Might I remind you that we’re all notable leaders and public figures and shouldn’t go scam-gambling on sports?” Katara asked dryly.
“Scambling!” Sokka and Toph shouted, grinning.
“Dinner’s ready!” Bumi announced, entering the dining room with a massive bowl of curry. Lin and Tenzin came behind him with the side dishes, and then Kya and Suyin with a beautiful fruit pie that was set off on a side table. Aang eyed it warily, but nothing seemed amiss - the purple, gooey center was perfectly aerated and swirled just as Aang had taught Tenzin to do it, and it looked like a perfectly ordinary fruit pie.
Dinner was a happy affair. Sokka happily chowed down on the curry while Katara ran over the updates Mai had written them about. Bumi managed to tell exactly one outlandish-but-probably-perfectly-accurate story about a recent training trip in the United Forces before Kya snorted and splashed him with water from his own cup. Tenzin and Lin had a perfectly civil conversation when Lin wasn’t snapping at Suyin to stop showing off her metalbending by warping her dinner knife. Toph and Suki brought up the invitation Mai had extended to them to visit Ember Island.
“I think we should try to convince the Ember Island Players to put on another showing of The Boy in the Iceberg,” Toph said. “Zuko’s the Firelord, I’m sure he could make it happen.”
“Zuko’s the Firelord, I’m sure they’d be terrified to portray him in that play ever again,” Suki countered with a grin. “But maybe it could happen…”
“I really prefer that play when it’s forgotten,” Katara said dryly.
“Aw, but Sweetness, the kids have never seen it! Would you really deprive them of this important piece of family history?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, but speaking of family history,” Bumi said, standing up. “Who’s ready for dessert?” He brought the pie over to the table.
“Me me me me me!” Suyin shouted, bouncing up and down in her seat.
“Su, calm down,” Lin ordered, scowling.
“What did you kids make for us?” Toph asked, slinging an arm around her youngest. Suyin fell silent, but she kept bouncing.
“It’s a labor of love,” Bumi said, “and also experimentation. Kya and I had a lot of fun trying to get the flavor balance right.”
“Special thanks to Tenzin for aerating the gooey center!” Kya added, picking up a knife. She paused and frowned at the twisted metal. “I need a knife Su hasn’t been at.”
“Su!” Lin groaned as her little sister laughed.
“Gimme,” Toph ordered, holding out a hand. A quick twist and the knife was straight again. “Now quit making me wait and slice that pie up!”
“You got it, Chief,” Kya said, cutting the pie into even slices that Bumi distributed to everyone else.
Aang stared at his plate suspiciously before spooning a bit of the pie into his mouth. The pastry portion was okay, but the filling - oh, no. “This pie tastes like the ocean,” Aang said, horrified. “Please don’t tell me there’s sea prunes in this.”
“Okay,” Bumi grinned, “I won’t tell you there’s sea prunes in this.”
“Oh my spirits.”
“Not bad!” Sokka said. Katara looked like she was enjoying it, as well. So did Toph, who didn’t mind sea prunes, but Lin was staring at her plate in consternation. Suyin had gone the route of just eating the pastry while leaving the filling untouched.
“We thought we’d combine the two sides of our heritage into one delicious dessert,” Bumi said. “What do you think, Dad?” He was still grinning. So was Kya.
“You are horrible children,” Aang said, staring miserably at his pie. “Horrible. Why would you put sea prunes in a pie? Why?”
“To see the look on your face,” Kya snickered. “Your face, Dad! I wish I had a camera!”
“Me too,” Aang sighed. “I need to document this as the moment my children betrayed my trust. At least I still have Tenzin.”
“It’s actually pretty good,” Tenzin said, having another bite of sea prune pie.
Aang gave his youngest a disappointed look. “Abandoned and betrayed by all my children. I can’t believe this.”
“You’re being melodramatic,” Katara snorted, and she pointed at the pie on his plate. “Are you gonna eat that?”
“All yours,” Aang said, handing his plate over.
“This is actually pretty ingenious,” Sokka said, scraping sea prune goop off his plate.
“Eh,” said Suki, “I’m actually with Aang on this. Sea prunes are okay for dinner, but they shouldn’t be in a dessert.”
“Thank you Suki, you’re the best sister-in-law ever.”
“Well for all of you who can’t recognize culinary genius when you taste it, don’t worry, we have a kumquat fruit pie as well,” Bumi said.
Aang gave his son a dull look. “Are they ocean kumquats? They’d better not be ocean kumquats.”
Bumi just grinned back. “You’ll have to eat it to find out!”
