You're post about being transwhite resonated with me as a Black person still being seen as "too white". I wanted to claim being transwhite when I first gotten in the trace community, but I was internally ashamed. Post like yours reminds me that it's okay to be (trans)white.

Yeah I was feeling that too for a long time. When i finally came out and told some of my friends they were very wonderful about it and helped me. And honestly, i've been feeling a lot better about so many things ever since coming out. I've never really realized it but i've felt restricted on everything from fashion choices to food to language and now i've never felt so free and i've really only just now started finding a personal aesthetic i like and not just one i feel i fit the image of and won't get made fun of over it.

Its a nice feeling to finally do it but do wait till you feel more comfortable with it, is the best advice i can give.

Ember "Rook" Mercar + Neve Gallus ⚔️❄️

How often do they sleep together?

Every few days at least, every night if they can manage it. It’s highly dependent on their wild ass schedules, but that gets easier after the events of Veilguard when they’re both living in Dock Town.

But early on at the Lighthouse? These two were lucky if they could even nap for a few hours together.

Where do they sleep?

It takes some time for them to start sleeping in the same space together. Their options are really just the barebones cot in Neve’s study or the horrible green chaise in the meditation room. Neither are made for two people, and both are decidedly uncomfortable. But misery loves company, right? So they’ll cuddle up. Out of necessity (mmhmm riiight)

This usually means Ember will practically drag Neve down to rest on top of her or that the two of them will be spooned up tight to keep from falling off (“Rook, I swear, if you push me off this couch, I’m going to take you down with me.”) Honestly, the forced proximity of these shitty beds worked in their favor. Or at least, neither one is complaining about the end result.

Once they’re back in Dock Town after the game, they immediately get an ACTUAL bed for their apartment. Thank the Maker. Their backs were killing them.

How do they prepare to sleep?

Ember winds down with some stretches, brushes her teeth, and she might deign to comb her hair. Then she does a quick sweep around whatever space they’re staying in to lock up for the night (It’s an old habit. She doesn’t care if it’s paranoid. Her little patrols have stopped at least one cook-plate fire, foiled the plans of two assassins, and kept a demon-possessed rat out of the kitchen.)

Ember will then review Veilguard missives in bed, make note about key things she has to do the next day, etc. This has the side benefit of acting as a buddy system/forcing function to encourage Neve to at least start making her way to bed with her case notes if she’s not in full deep work mode. The two of them will also chat about a case or their day or just banter about, their conversations becoming sillier and their sentences tapering off as they start to fall asleep. Ember almost always falls asleep first (there are some nights when she’s convinced Neve is playing a twisted game of sleep-chicken.)

Meanwhile, I just know that Neve has terrible sleep hygiene and barely any routine to speak of. I’d be shocked if she even takes time to remove her makeup most nights tbh (my darling disaster girl). But she definitely reviews her case notes in bed, and she keeps a notebook on her nightstand for when she needs to jot down any stray thoughts. Ember also keeps a notebook and pen on her nightstand for when Neve inevitably misplaces hers under a mountain of papers. She’s become a pro at blindly handing it over (still half-asleep) to Neve in the middle of the night.

Neve probably has some small ritual to take care of her prosthetic / leg, too (e.g., a moisturizer or massage for her leg, a quick scan of her prosthetic to make sure it wasn’t damaged from the day’s adventures, etc.) and this becomes more consistent once they’ve moved back to Dock Town post-game.

What do they wear to sleep?

Ember: boxers/sweats and a tank top/t-shirt/sports bra. Similar to the in-game underwear. Basic, functional, the type of thing you'd find in a value pack at a big-box store lol.

Neve: an oversized shirt (watch it be the equivalent of a Cida Ciconia band t-shirt lol) and her underwear. She doesn’t seem like someone who’d bother with actual PJs. She’s been known to just strip and collapse into bed (at the apartment) or fall asleep in whatever she wore that day (at the lighthouse or office)

Do they cuddle?

Yes!

As mentioned earlier, this started because their bed options at the lighthouse were not made for two people. So, unless they wanted to part ways and sleep separately, or one person was willing to take the floor, they had to share. Not that they minded. It actually worked in their favor to have a set “reason” for being that close that didn’t require them to openly admit they wanted to cuddle (lol these idiots.)

I also just see Neve and Ember as being very physically affectionate with their loved ones. Sure, Neve will keep some distance in public to at least try and keep a target off Ember’s back, but in private (or among trusted friends) it’s all fair game. Meanwhile, Ember positively beams at their proximity no matter what. Dork.

What are their preferred sleep positions?

Ember will usually sleep on her back or her side, and always with the door in her sightline (yet another reason she hated that green chaise). She particularly enjoys having Neve resting on her chest while Ember holds her close. And she loves loves loves being the big spoon.

Also, Little Spoon!Neve supremacy. I will die on this hill 😤 Neve also likes resting her head on Ember’s chest because she finds her heartbeat soothing. Or she’ll curl up against Ember, tangling their legs together. I suspect Neve breaks away a few times in the night as she tosses and turns, but even so she tries to keep some physical contact with Ember.

How easy do they fall asleep?

It depends.

Ember can usually fall asleep quickly, anytime and anywhere. She’s got that military technique to be out like a light within minutes of closing her eyes down to a science (much to Neve’s disbelief. She tested just how asleep Ember was the first few times to see if she was faking it. Ember did not appreciate these experiments lol.) But Ember starts to have trouble sleeping once Solas is in her head during the events of the game. Plus, ya know, all the stress of leading the team in an apocalypse. It gets better post-game, but it’s never quite as easy as it had been. Could be a lingering effect of the blood magic idk (Ember shrugs it off, but Neve is determined to find an actual answer.)

Neve does not fall asleep quickly or easily. Her mind continues to chew on whatever case she’s working on. But sometimes she will push herself to the point of exhaustion and just collapse onto the bed and conk out. She and Ember continue to debate on whether that counts as “falling asleep” or “passing out.” 🙄

However, Neve does find it much easier to fall and stay asleep with Ember nearby. No, she will not elaborate. Unless you’re Bellara. And Bellara has sworn the sacred girl’s-night secrecy pact. Her oath to Neve is so strong even Ember can’t weasel anything out of her (and trust me, she’s tried.)

Do they toss and turn a lot?

Ember can, if she’s having a nightmare. These flare up after the final battle and will have her thrashing around until she jolts awake or Neve wakes her up. Luckily these nightmares become less frequent over time, only popping up during times of stress. Otherwise, she doesn’t move much in her sleep beyond readjusting her position around Neve if her arm starts going numb or something. 

Neve tosses and turns every night. She’s a fitful sleeper to begin with, even at the best of times. She’ll settle down a bit if she’s the little spoon, but it rarely lasts the whole night. Sometimes she’ll grow so agitated at not being able to fall asleep (whether it’s due to her racing mind, a bad dream, or pain in her leg) that she’ll just get up and go back to work.

Do they snore?

Neve has a very soft snore when she’s deep in sleep, which Ember thinks is adorable. Neve denies this slander outright. She absolutely does NOT snore, thank you very much.

Who hogs the blankets?

NEVE. To be fair, she’s not used to sharing a bed with someone. And all her tossing and turning drags the blankets along with her. But if she wakes up in the middle of the night, she will notice and try to redistribute the blankets more fairly. Though there’s hardly any need since Ember is usually cuddled up close to her anyways.

What do they dream about?

Ember doesn’t remember most of her dreams. Sometimes they’re just silly things thrown together ("Lucanis and that cat Ferdinand had a cook off to see who Hal's assistant should be... but Ferdinand lost because kept eating the fish. Too bad. I think his recipe would have won 😔”) But more often it’s nightmares about being trapped in the Regret Prison, some of her more harrowing gladiator fights, etc.

Neve doesn’t usually dream but sometimes her cases blur together nonsensically in her mind, which she finds more annoying than anything. Or they’ll start mixing with current day anxieties - usually ending with bad things happening to people she cares about. Needless to say, she’d rather just go to sleep and wake up without having to deal with dreams or the Fade at all.

How easily do they wake up?

Ember wakes up easily and quickly. Years of being woken unexpectedly for a fight, an arena match, or some emergency forced her to become a light sleeper. She’s also naturally an early riser, but Neve can persuade her to stay in bed a while longer without much difficulty.

Neve CAN wake up quickly if she has a breakthrough in a case that she has to write down, or if she hears anything “off” (i.e., dangerous) in the usual Minrathous lullaby, but it’s a jarring transition and she will be grumpy after she’s dealt with the situation. She does not appreciate being woken up for anything short of an actual emergency otherwise.

How awake are they afterwards?

Ember is up and at ‘em once her eyes open, alert and ready to start the day. She'll attempt to make her half of the bed (she’s long given up on getting Neve to pick up that habit lol) and then go off to brush her teeth, make coffee, etc. She might even fit in a run or some training exercises in the morning.

Neve is… less enthused lol. She takes her time to gain her bearings and get out of bed. And she will want her coffee asap. She’s still trying to crack the case of how Ember is so damn chipper in the morning. “It’s called having an actual sleep routine, Neve,” Ember laughs. Neve pointedly ignores her.

(forgive me if this is a strange thing to ask!) the little bean shaped cats from your recent bedtime post are something I've been considering buying myself, but I cannot for the life of me find any description on what they actually feel like. are they entirely stuffing or are there beans in there? :0

Cats vs pickles have beanie baby type beans in the bottom and stuffing above that! The ratio of beans to stuffing can honestly vary between beans as none are exactly the same, so usually I like to feel them before I buy if I can? Usually through the bags. The beans give them a nice weight!

Since Muzan's Defeat, I recall that Shinjuro and Hatomi are married. What exactly would their marriage life be like?

Thank you so much for the ask, this def inspired me to write more things I haven’t personally covered so here are just some that I organized!

The Married life headcanons

. Got married a couple months after muzans defeat. It was a small affair, Hatomi had insisted on such and preferred it to be an event for friends to meet up where it just so happened to be celebrating a union.

. Married life was relatively peaceful though there were some changes that needed getting used to. For both Hatomi and Shinjuro, sharing a room after a decade of being widows had its interesting scenarios. Waking up in the morning and turning over to see a face after always sleeping alone was one such hurdle. At first it was unfamiliar and awkward, but the more they shared the room they began acclimating to each others habits. And with time, the awkwardness of being close began to diminish.

. Everyday was always something new to learn about one another, and it was everyday Senjuro got to see a side of his father only Kyojuro knew about before Ruka’s passing. it gave Senjuro a sense of peace seeing his father find his happiness in a woman he looks up to with deep respect, and to see Hatomi finally let her guard down and relax was a sight Senjuro never thought he would see.

. Shinjuro is kind of a sprawler and moves a lot in his sleep. Where as Hatomi is a heavy sleeper, sleeps like the dead and overheats easily. The occasions he has woken her from her dead sleep from his movement has caused some frustration but nothing to the point of major contentions. It was just something they both worked to find solutions for

. Shinjuro never really used to care much about his state of dress, especially right after Ruka’s passing. When Hatomi came into the fold, the times he would come out of his room half naked and uncaring appalled her. That or in a drunken haze after missions start taking his bloody clothes off without fully noticing she was there picking up after him and seeing more than she should have. She would keep face for the fact that it was his house, he dressed as he pleased…but he made it difficult throughout those years. Throughout that times span he gradually regained some sense of propriety as even he started to realize that wasn’t proper to be unkempt around her, and her reactions certainly influenced his awareness of the problem. It was as if the more aware he was of her staring, the more self conscious he got. And when they got married….call him bashful but the first night they shared the room

Hatomi: Are you serious? I have seen you near naked multiple times, and you’re just now saying it’s a problem?

Shinjuro: Yeah well this time I’m sober. Jokes aside, I’m self conscious when aware of it thank you very much.

Hatomi, after a moment of deadpan silence, a smirk grow on her face. : “….So you’re shy?”

Shinjuro: 😳😒 Not gonna dignify that with a response.

. Bedroom habits include brushing each other’s hair. Hatomi started it first, remembering how unkempt his hair used to be, she often ran her fingers through it, getting him warmed up to letting her brush it which he resisted at first…but not for long. It even got to a point that he started to return the gesture.

. Biggest challenge in Shinjuro’s book was to get Hatomi to relax more and let him do things around the house. And by relax he means she sits down and does something that wasn’t related to cleaning. In that regard, Hatomi is very stubborn in cleaning as if it was her job, so used to picking up the slack when he was not as present it became second nature to her. He knows that, and blames himself for making her feel like she always had to do everything…but that was the problem it wasn’t her job and Shinjuro with Senjuros help was dead set on getting her to stop and let him take over. The times he had to near drag her from any task and or cleaning material is ridiculous, and the indignant look she’d give him for doing this would be funny were it not directed at him. He has conceded some instances, as he must admit that she is way more stubborn than he is.

. Hatomi and Shinjuro did travel a couple times, but EVERYTIME they did without Senjuro left an absence both noticed, and while you would assume Hatomi is the first to miss him (she does she just hides it better), Shinjuro is the first to crack and feel dad guilt over Senjuro not being there to enjoy new things with them too, considering he feels responsible for depriving Senjuro of good memories for most of his childhood. The last time they travelled alone together was the honeymoon, and after they discussed it they both planned future trips to take Senjuro with them to make up for it.

. There would be times they got into small arguments, most times Hatomi wants to talk things out but Shinjuro would shut down and not want to hear it. Quick to be short and leave if things get too heated. In a way it was him wanting to leave before saying something out of line, he slipped few times but he made those mistakes before and refused to go back to his old ways. Him getting some space was a way to cool his head and protect her from anything he might say harshly. Though if he did end up saying something rude, Hatomi had two reactions to it depending on what he says. She was usually patient and did not take much of his heated words to heart, letting out a sigh and quick to calm the situation by reasoning and voicing her worries about him to placate him. But if he says anything rude in regard to Senjuro or insulting what she has done for the home, let’s just say Hatomi is the epitome of petty when she feels Senjuro has been treated unfairly in anyway. She is still protective after all these years, and the slightest raise of voice towards the soft spoken boy brings out a quiet fury in her, which leads to the thing Shinjuro hates the most….the silent treatment. She still holds him accountable and gently reminds him of his promise to change, And Hatomi plays the long game. This only happened two times when they were married, before that it was more since he was still recovering from the alcohol withdrawal and those months were rough.

. Hatomi mostly did the cooking, sometimes Senjuro would cook for them as his sweet potato roasts were always welcome, but Shinjuro was more of the cooking simply. Give him 7 ingredients and he can make something, but anything more than that is overwhelming. With Senjuro helping he is slowly picking up more techniques but it’s a slow process. Hatomi is usually the one making hearty soups, curries and noodle dishes, and she prides herself on making new meals out of any left overs. No food wasted in this house.

. It took a year for Shinjuro to find out what her favorite sweet treat was, and it was only because Senjuro remembered years back about her reaction to finding that very treat in the market but could never find again…her favorite sweet treat is Honey glazed candied ginger, with lemon zest and and orange peels, and Shinjuro went out of his way with Senjuro to find a recipe for it and make it for her birthday. The way her eyes gleamed with such wonder and her heartfelt smile when she received their treat was a face Shinjuro looks back on fondly.

. Uzui sometimes visits, would bring the wives if they expressed interest…mostly because they like to gossip with Hatomi. If any of them brought their kids Hatomi of course fawns over their children, and by the time Hatomi has Kaiden play dates are arranged whether the men like it or not.

. Hatomi in her spare time was shown by Shinjuro how to improve her writing skills, she had good grammar but her penmanship was sorely lacking. It gave Shinjuro something to do, showing his now wife how to write more neatly and Hatomi was not opposed to it…even her grocery lists started becoming more decipherable so she is not complaining about the lessons.

. It took Shinjuro a while to grasp onto the idea that he was feeling more than attraction towards another, hell even getting over the guilt of wanting to show physical affection to a partner again was a challenge. Seeing some hesitance on Hatomi’s part at times brought some semblance of relatability, he knew she could understand his hesitance and that he wasn’t paranoid in feeling this guilt. But the way she has coped and expressed her affection despite that started to make him feel more comfortable with reciprocating. Before they got married he was very reserved with showing physical affection outright, he did small gestures as ways of showing it like helping her with tasks, covering her with a coat if it was cold, and enjoying walks along with quiet time where they just talked. But touching of any intimate kind took a while as he felt he did not deserve that, that he had to atone and earn it. Hatomi was the first to initiate it, despite being patient, she didn’t want him to get the impression that he was undeserving of love, and so she was more than happy to take the first step. It was after they married that he started to seriously take the initiative and show affection without any coaxing.
