Hey OP! I loved how you broadened the lens when it comes down to El vs Pen/LW. Iâm not gonna lie: before reading this, I was definitely Team El and thought that Pen was selfish for airing her out like that just to make sure her secret ID wasnât discovered by Queen Charlotte. I didnât consider Penâs perspective at all. By doing that, I didnât realize that I had totally absolved El of any responsibility or consequences for her actions. She chose to sneak around seeing a young man from the other side of town unchaperoned. She did that. Pen just wrote about it. However, Pen couldâve also come forward to Queen Charlotte and outted herself as LW to keep Elâs secret. But then, we wouldnât have had Pen revealing herself as LW on her own terms at the end of S3. It makes me wonder what wouldâve happed toward the end of S2 and how S3 wouldâve changed since everyone in the Ton wouldâve already known that Pen is LW and if Eltheo wouldâve/couldâve been more in spite of their class differences?đ¤
This fandom created a myth about Lady Whistledown. Sometimes i wonder if i watched the same show. Let me make myself clear: While Penelope has to tell Colin the truth, because she loves him and he deserves it, LW helped the Bridgertons a lot actually. It saved them to have Daphne married to a creep ( and see how Violet wanted people to talk to reach LW and spread), saved Colin from a loveless marriage with children that he didn't know anything about it and saved Eloise. Yes, it saved Eloise. Eloise created and kept pushing the situation in her reckless pursuit. Eloise also didn't think about the consequences of her action towards the people working for LW, didn't listen to Penelope, didn't think about the risk she was putting people at. And while i understand her anger in not knowing, had she been a better friend, many other things would be different, because she truly never paid attention to what Penelope feels or want, she molded Pen to be whom she wanted and be her audience. And then, she left Pen with the choice of losing all she built and suffer consequences or pick the less harmful option: to make Eloise's scandal about politics, not romantic and save them both, plus Theo. The real ruin for Eloise would've been her being caught with Theo, something that was bound to happen as she was not careful at all. Why should Pen sacrifice all for Eloise? Would any of you sacrifice all ( job, family and possibly your liberty) for a friend who caused the bloody situation? I'm no hypocrite, i know i wouldnt. Not to mention Eloise bravado, to Pen she would say she wants to challenge society and doesn't care about what they think...but folded the moment she received a frown from the Ton. Shall we see who are LW victims, people that suffered real consequences? Lord Beerbrock. That's it. Marina is married, despite her lies and deceit. Colin? Nothing as well, in fact, happier than ever. Eloise? A few weeks of ostracism and she's back without a problem, without a romantic entanglement to ruin her. One that she clearly didn't really thought was deep enough to face society. The Bridgertons have more to thank LW than to hate her. And Violet and Anthony, i bet your asses, do think so, and see it. And The Queen? Are you watching the show? Have you seen Charlotte's personality? That woman loves the whole game with LW. And She loves to take it all, to receive the laurels of that society. As long as she can make it look like the won, and she can, easily, by revealing or be involved in revealing who is LW. See the whole KatexEdwina, how she handled the Ton there.
Anyway, just wanted to say something because some people have dreamed a LW that doesn't exist at all. Created on their own minds a boogeyman that wasn't simply reporting the truth with witty opinions but fabricating stories and lies to ruin lives, and that's simply not true. Never happened. There was never a lie created there. Only the truth, even about herself, as Pen was often damaged by her column.

Listening vs Obeying
Something Iâve been mulling over since seeing another round of discussion about Penelope and her choices specifically around the Marina and her children and Eloise LW publications is the notion of listening to someone vs obeying them. When we talk to people or provide advice, what is our expectation and goal in doing so? Are we helping and being a sounding board or are we trying to give marching orders? And, at the end of it, do we respect that ultimate decision maker in someoneâs life is and should be them?
I ask because a common theme I see pop up is the idea that Pen âhadâ to resort to Whistledown because âno one listens to her.â But is that true? Did they really just close their ears and go âlalalaâ when she spoke to them? Or, is it that she was heard but she just wasnât *obeyed*? And why do so many Penelope stans seem to have this absolute conviction that if she expresses something to someone or gives them advice, she is entitled to unquestioning compliance?
Colin listened to her about Marina loving someone else before him, he just didnât go along with what she wanted him to do which was be horrified and cast Marina aside. In fact, he quite maturely expresses that it would hypocritical of him to do so given that he also has a past with other women. Thatâs really cool of him! It shows that heâs a solid and reasonable man who doesnât judge others against a bar he wouldnât use for himself.
Eloise listened to Penelope about she concerns (which Penelope was mostly lying about to outright gaslighting Eloise with to keep from getting caught as LW. Not to mention the hypocrisy over lecturing Eloise about going to âbad parts of town unchaperonedâ while Penelope was doing the exact same thing), Eloise just decided that her conversations and friendship with Theo along with expanding her mind at the rallies she was attending were worth the risk. Which, again, very cool. No matter how people try to spin Eloise as some selfish asshole, her pushing back against the box the patriarchal society she exists in and wanting to reach beyond the arbitrary barriers of class and gender placed on her is very brave and admirable.
Even Marina listened to Penelope about her objections to the Colin plan but was in desperate straits after Portia (whom the fandom never seems to want to blame for her part in that whole debacle or who does get to be applauded for doing whatever she needs for her childrenâŚhmmmâŚqWHITE interesting that point) locked her away, put the fear of God into her, and tried to sell her to a man who INSPECTED MARINAâS TEETH, so forged ahead. Marinaâs choices are definitely murky and unfair to Colin but the idea that she was doing anything for some sort of diabolical and cruel reason and not out of desperation and fear driven by the terrible way society would treat her and, more importantly, her innocent children, is just not borne out by the narrative. And anyone trying to claim otherwise is not someone I can take seriously. Marinaâs first choice being her children should be more admired than Portiaâs choices but somehow, Marina is a villain while Portia is âcomplicated and flawed.â I cannot talk about Marina without wanting to wrap her in blankets and protect her from both the fandom and what I fear the show has in store for her. I admit this bias freely.
Penelope is never fully honest with people and then, when they donât follow her marching orders on how she thinks they should operate, she goes nuclear and takes their choices away from them. Penelope is not the god of the people in her lifeâs lives. She is not *entitled* to being obeyed (even if you think she is 100% in the right when giving advice, this is still the case). People have their own minds, their own free will, and the right to make their own decisions and mistakes. Penelope needs to learn both to fully be honest and speak up as herself AND to accept that she is not the boss of the people in her life. There is no way she can be a healthy partner in her relationship with Colin (or anyone!) if she operates under the theory that if someone wonât take her advice willingly, she will just force their hand. And her stans need to learn the difference between being listened to and being obeyed.
I think she can. And I think, if her arc is done well, that will be a big point of growth for her. She will learn to use her words and her voice, as herself. Sheâll learn to trust the people in her life - because she doesnât really trust anyone right now - and sheâll learn to see the people in her life are entitled to autonomy. I just hope the fandom can learn the same.
P. S. This is all coming from someone who is a Polin fan desperately hoping their season gives me the growth and story I desire while dreading what I think is actually in store for them so miss me with the âhaterâ bs I can already sense coming.

Brigerton S1 Polin Rewatch
okay so I decided to rewatch Bridgerton bc I literally cannot get enough of polin, but I'm skipping most scenes that don't include pen or colin, this is S1. I'm just pointing out what catches my eye be it romantic or showing character. â¤ď¸ will be something I think is related to polin. p.s. I have not read any of the books and I may put some speculation on meanings.
E1:
Pen calls her mother tasteless and tacless as LW, lmao
â¤ď¸when leaving the home, Eloise says hi to Pen across the st. and Colin looks over afterwards
â¤ď¸Colin stares at Penelope when she is presented to the Queen
LW says she doesn't like the alphabetical naming, and Portia calls LW out on writing a lot about the bridgertons
â¤ď¸Pen stares at Colin as he dances w/ another girl
Pen seems happy when Marina receives callers, I mean listen to LW dialogue about her
Portia tells them^ to bid farewell to "even Penelope" - she thinks of her at the bottom of her daughters
â¤ď¸Colin ignores Pen's sisters saying goodbye and goes straight to her to crack a joke, no nodding or curtsy or anything
â¤ď¸ Colin walks up to Pen at a ball, this time they do curtsy bc it's in society, she tries to get him to notice her dress but he says nothing (bc of Cressida)
â¤ď¸Colin denies Cressida a dance and takes Pen in front of her - Pen's first dance!
E2:
Colin is a jokesterrrr (first about Daphne's dress and then about "sticks")
Pen is the only one to go and check on Marina - she cares
Pen thought pregnancy came from cake, lmaooooo
Pen knows how to twist her words to please her mother
E3:
Pen is such a romanticccc and you can see it w/ Marina's situation
Pen goes to try to help Marina like Eloise tried w/ Daphne when Nigel was calling
E4:
Pen even offers to stay in for Marina
my boy Mr. Finch's first appearance! and later they flirt about cheese MY HEART - Pen seems to find it cute too
â¤ď¸again Colin goes to Penelope w/ no curtsy and make innapropriate jokes, I mean he sneaks behind her and says a joke w/ the intention to make her laugh - he looks for her reaction!!!!
â¤ď¸Colin looks at Pen, but she looks away!!! - who would look at someone like that, oh Colin you were bewitched before you even knew
â¤ď¸ Colin then talks about Marina to keep talking to Pen, he couldv'e walked away but decided to extend the convo!
â¤ď¸ poor Pen hearing about Marina hoping to entrap Colin, she tries to hard to softly disuade her
instead of saying anything about her feelings, Pen decides to pretend to try to sleep to kick Marina out of her room
Peneloise's first fight :(
Colin brings in his mother drunk lol - you can see how happy drunk she is w/ her little sensitive boy
Colin ends up helping Daphne - he is caring and sensitive towards her situation
E5:
â¤ď¸Pen meddles in Colin and Marina's convo, poor Pen seeing her crush courting someone else :(
â¤ď¸Pen keeps trying to disuade Marina from Colin and says it outloud
Peneloise angst
â¤ď¸Pen staresss at Marina and Colin
gentleman Colin - no kissing Marina, but proposes, he thinks he is so mature and doing the right/expected thing by society standards
E6:
Colin announces his engagement to Marina
â¤ď¸poor Pen being hurtful by said news
Anthony think Colin wants to get it on and thinks of him so young and immature with his actions and decisions
Colin says he is hurt in more ways than one when Anthony does not give him blessing - he cares so much of what others think of him
Violet and Colin have a heart to heart convo, and Colin says he is never taken seriously except by Marina - prob why he went to her bc he longs to be seen as such
Pen feels mocked and pitied by Marina? basically she cannot accept a compliment from her and is also mad w/ her by the whole Colin situation
Pen vs her sisters, never seem to have a moment of getting along or fitting in
Colin tries to sell Marina to his family, cracking a joke too
â¤ď¸Pen asks Colin for a word and he says "Pen, of course" - as if there is not even a need for her to ask bc he will always have a word w/ her, no hesitation
â¤ď¸unchaperoned and alone Pen tries to talk seriously but Colin cracks a joke and then sees her expression and apoligizes to let her talk
â¤ď¸Pen tells Colin that Marina is in love w/ someone else - not to her own benefit but to try to get Colin out of a marriage where he is not/ may not be loved
â¤ď¸Colin tells Pen she is good, while holding her hand??? - he sees how Pen tries to help him out but it's no matter to him bc he thinks he and Marina know each other so well, but knows Pen was just looking out for him
Colin aplogizes for his family's actions
Colin is such a romantic toooooooooo, he proposes getting eloped
Portia doesn't even care for Pen when she is supposedly sick, she probably has been disregarded most of her life
Pen proves Marina wasn't denied by George to try to end her engagement to Colin and for Marina's love?
â¤ď¸Pen worries about Colin being deceived, she knows Marina would be safe but she worries about Colin in the matter
Marina catches on and tells Pen that Colin does not even see Pen as a woman - which tbh is true at the moment bc Colin only sees her as "Pen" girl next door, sister's bestie, and someone he can joke with from childhood
Pen goes to Eloise and cries - now I read someone saying they thought this wasn't bc Colin was getting married or bc Marina called her out but bc she had used LW to hurt/expose someone she cared for, both Marina and Colin, Pen so thoughtful and knowing how harsh words can be just used LW to bring scandal to them in order to end the engagement, to prevent Colin being tricked into marriage
LW publishes Marina is with child and Colin was conned
E7:
â¤ď¸Colin's bedsheets are yellow? hmmm
Daphne checks on Colin, he thought he was in love and puts his heart before his brain, he also catches on something going on w/ Daphne - he is so observant on other's emotions and putting those first
Colin thought he was loved and is hurt that was a lie along w/ Marina's entire scam - Colin is emotional, and I don't mean in the way we think of but he shows emotions and is in tuned with his and with others, he again puts other's first as seen when if told the truth he would've married Marina
â¤ď¸even though her family is in scandal Pen asks about Colin
Pen finds Marina unconcious - still caring
E8:
Pen comes and checks on Marina, ready to care for her with water and a rag - still caring about her
â¤ď¸"one day he will see it" Marina to Pen about Colin
â¤ď¸Colin is singing and quiets when he sees Pen - was he just caught by surprise or shy of Pen seeing him in this state?
lol Philippa "did I lose it" - it being her dowry
â¤ď¸ Polin catching each others eye across the dance floor, he was ready and already marching to her and then she put her head down - my poor Pen, again no curtsy
â¤ď¸Colin acknowledges Pen was looking out for him in his best interests
â¤ď¸Pen was ready to declare her feelings for Colin
â¤ď¸Colin tells Pen he is leaving and tells it's bc of her bc she reminded him of who he is and what he wanted
â¤ď¸Colin asks her to dance, and she says no - he notices something in her saying no and stared at her leaving, whippppedddd before he knew
â¤ď¸Colin leaves but looks at Pen's home maybe???
â¤ď¸Pen ofc cries as Eloise comforts her about her father but she looks out the window to Colin - crying for both?
Pen is sad to see Marina leave too - someone who seemed to be closer to her than her sisters

Today on another episode of stories I wish someone would write: Bridgerton flowershop vs tattoo parlour au
I don't know i just thought of an au where Benedict runs a tattoo parlor with Gen Delacroix as a passion project and has overseen the designs for the ink of all his siblings. But with some drama added
Anthony: the most serious of business men, everyone thinks he doesn't have tattoos, because hes so straight laced, but in reality he's got his whole back inked. The tattoo on his back is a very detailed clockwork machinery inside a beehive which he got when Edmund died. The only person outside of his family who's ever seen the tattoo up close outside is Kate Sharma, a woman Anthony has a complicated past with. Kate used to be one of Anthony's business competitors, but after having a falling out with her sister where Anthony was heavily involved, Kate retired from the corporate world and decided to open a Dog Groomer Salon to get her life back on track. 'Sir Newton's Pet Pampering' happens to be right across Bridgerton's Ink and in between Sophie's flower shop and Peneloise bookstore. Anthony finds every excuse he can to visit Benedict and watch Kate from afar, trying to work up the courage to approach her and fix things. Even tho she's under the impression that Anthony ruined her relationship with Edwina on purpose and absolutely hates his guts.
Benedict: with the exception of his siblings he's the artist and Gen is more of the one with the needle, he doesn't ink customers. He's got a very nice tattoo of art supplies intertwined with the Bridgerton family crest all across his chest (a tribute to his family and his lifelong dream), he likes to wear shirts that are slightly open in the front, to give people a peek but also leave them wondering about the full thing. The only person aside from his family that he's ever inked is 'flower shop' Sophie from across the street. He may or may not be totally smitten with her ever since she first came into his business, but she doesn't take him seriously because he's been acting like a wishy washy playboy since meeting her. She's a single mom, who is very secretive about why the father of her little Charlie isn't in the picture and thinks that Benedict is bad news in an ink covered package, but he wants to show her that she's wrong, so wrong, he can help her, now if only she would let him show her that he's not such a bad guy. Then maybe that masquerade tattoo he inked in her shoulder could be joined by a glass slipper
Colin: the consummate travel writer, he's got both arms tatted up with quotes in different languages and artwork of the places he's traveled, and he loves to push up his shirtsleeves to show them off, especially around Penelope. His long time friend who runs the bookstore cafe across the street with his sister. but lately he's been (mooching off) staying with Benedict for a while longer ever since Genevieve let it slip that Penelope might have seen all Colin's tattoos but she's obviously never shown him hers. Now Colin is paranoid about Penelope's secret tattoos, why didn't she tell him? Where did she get inked? Does she have more secrets?. Penelope on the other hand is struggling to hide her secret life as erotic romance writer Lady Whistledown, while she dodges Colin's pursuit and manages the bookstore, as much as she's always wished for his undivided attention, she's not going to show him her tattoos just to satisfy his curiosity. ( Especially not the Quill tattoo she got right below her breast or the matching parchment tattoo she got in the inside of her upper thigh). This, predictably is driving Colin crazy
Eloise: Eloise was never a fan of tattoos like her brothers, sure shes got a small violet in her ankle and a 'Girlboss' and 'Smash the patriarchy' inked in small print around her right wrist. But she's never seen the appeal of huge tattoos... Until Philip the plant guy. Truthfully he's just of one of her bookstore's regulars, who works with Sophie from down the street. And drinks his coffee in El's book cafe, El makes small talk with him on slow mornings but it's not like they're friends ( sometimes he leaves Eloise flowers instead of a tip, but that's a conversation for another day). The thing is that with that nerdy, Frazzled, soccer dad look, Eloise would have never thought that Philip the plant guy was inked all over. Not until she accidentally saw him shirtless when she was over at Ben's. And boy not only is the man ripped, he's got the entire upper part of his body tattooed in plants and flowers, back, front, arms, all the way to his wrists. Now everytime Eloise sees him all she can think about is what he's hiding under all that flannel and her brain blanks out, so much she can't handle a normal conversation with him, not only that, she babbled nervously so much that she somehow ended up volunteering to help him teach his kids how to swim. Now all Eloise can think about is that she just volunteered to be somewhere public, with Phillip in his swimming trunks and children present. Why did things have to get so complicated?? He's Philip the plant guy! She's not supposed to like him ( but she does)
An: and yeah that's the tea

Bridgerton Season 3 and the dichotomy of understandable vs justifiable
This is going to be a long post and possibly incomprehensible but I've been thinking about the narrative choices of season 3 for way too long to not talk about it.
When a character takes any decisions or does an action, it has two facets- understandable and justifiable. Understandable actions are those where the audience knows why a character is doing what they are doing. Some common ways to establish this sort of knowledge is having flashbacks, by showcasing backstories or through narrative foreshadowing. Justifiable actions are those where the audience is meant to support the actions of a character, they don't merely understand the course of action but agree with it. Of course, actions can be both understandable and justifiable, but they don't always have to be. It's perfectly possible to have characters do things that are completely understandable but not even remotely justifiable.
(It's a bit more difficult to have actions that are justifiable but not understandable, because often justification comes from understanding, but with enough plot maneuvering, it can be done but I'll talk about that some other time)
And that's what I want to talk about. In season 2, there were plenty of characters who did things that were narratively framed as understandable but not justifiable. Anthony in particular is a great example of this. Like when he proposes to Edwina after Daphne confronts him about his feelings for Kate. His conversation with Violet on the in 2x03 has already established his absolute terror for love and why he is so insistent on having a pleasant marriage as opposed to a passionate one. And the flashbacks to Edmund's death have further established how much he suffered and saw his mother suffer. So when his reaction to Daphne driving home the point that he feels something intense for Kate, even if he calls it aggravation, it's something very far from rationality, we can understand why he chooses to propose to Edwina. But it's never framed as a justifiable choice. Whether it's through Kate's "Yes, my lord?" thinking he's coming to talk to her or the events that unfold, it is established that it was not the right course of action.
Another good example of this is Edwina's "half sister" comment to Kate. The long lingering shots of Kate and Anthony, the bracelet scene, the shots of the guests looking confused, all help us understand exactly where Edwina is coming from. She's hurt and lashes out at Kate to hurt her. But, is this ever framed as a justifiable choice? We constantly hear Kate emphasize their sisterhood, add to it her "this shall pass" speech to Anthony, her desire to go to India to physically remove herself from the situation, and it all show us that it was Kate's self-sacrificial nature that led her to her course of action, not because her loyalty towards Edwina was diluted by the lack of a full blood relation. Edwina's comments are never framed as justifiable.
And this brings me to Penelope. Until season 2, her actions were framed as understandable but not justifiable. Her mother and sister's casual cruel comments, Cressida's open meanness towards her, the comments she overhears from Colin, all help us understand exactly why Lady Whistledown has become such an outlet for her. Those shots of her at the periphery of ballrooms help us see why she sees the gossip as a silver lining in her situation. But what happens to Eloise and Penelope's explosive monologue to Eloise all work towards helping us understand that her actions are not exactly justifiable. It's not something the audience should throw unwavering support behind. And that's part of what makes her such a deliciously complex character. She forces us to contend with our own ideas of fairness and loyalty, in an especially unfair society.
However in season 3, the narrative choices seem geared towards framing Penelope's actions as both understandable and justifiable. The shots of Penelope staring as Cressida and Eloise walk away are framed to elicit pity from us. Similarly the shot of Penelope and Eloise at the modiste, with Penelope framed softly compared to the harsher positioning of Eloise is clearly intended for the audience to know that there's a sympathetic character vs a sterner one. And at least in part 1 it's established, narratively and cinematically, that we, as an audience, are supposed to view Eloise's grudge towards Penelope as unreasonable or 'doing too much'.
This is honestly a baffling narrative choice by the writers that downplays the complexity of Penelope as a character. Penelope is not meant to be a straight up victim, that's the whole point of Lady Whistledown. And if Penelope's actions are both understandable and justifiable, so much of the intensity of the reveal is lost, because if there's a "right side" then there's nothing for the audience to contend with. The whole point of Lady Whistledown being morally grey is that it makes the audiences think and agonize over different kinds of reactions to the reveal, whether those are understandable and justifiable or merely understand.
The fun of the reveal in the books is that we can understand Penelope, but we can also understand the disgruntled ton and I understand that the show is narratively quite far from the books, but even then to take out the complex nuance of Penelope and work towards this one dimensional narrative is a very strange decision.

A defense of Eloise Bridgerton and her friendship with Penelope Featherington
I should probably start this post by pointing out the fact that Iâm not the biggest Eloise fan out there. In fact Eloise has consistently annoyed me for two seasons straight with her Iâm ânot like other girlsâ shtick and the writers using her as a prop for modern feminist talking points.Â
Mostly what I disliked about Eloise was the bluntness and lack of charm used to put across the themes of womenâs role in recency society and the lack of options for girls not interested in playing the marriage mart mind games.Â
Jane Austen, for example, makes many of the same points regarding women in her novels but instead of beating us over the head with it, she uses wit, eloquence and wisdom to get her points across.Â
But, above all, I disliked just how self involved Eloise was, what a major chip on her shoulder she had. Sheâs a privileged girl from an immensely powerful and rich family that spends her days whining and being dismissive of everyone around her.Â
She spends most of season 1 picking fights with Daphne for no reason and the second season making fun of Colin and running around town like a chicken without a head not so much because she wants to find out who Lady Whistledown is but because sheâs bored and wants something to do (something other than talking to men potentially interested in marrying her because sheâs gay sheâs not like other girls).Â
Even as Iâm writing this, Iâm questioning whether Iâm even the right person to defend Eloise because, as you can clearly tell, I donât much care for her. But I do think Polin and Penelope fans are really misjudging Eloise and wanting to make her the villain of season 3 due to her resentment towards Penelope and her anger at the Polin engagement.
So I guess I have to be the hero without a cape in this instance.Â
Here it goes âŚ
Itâs very easy to look at the friendship between Eloise and Penelope in season 1 and 2 and conclude that Eloise has always been a bad friend to Penelope. After all, almost every scene they have together is about Eloise, her interests and passions, her frustrations at the ton and the marriage mart, her inability to fit in with societal expectations, her quest to find out the identity of Lady Whistledown etc, etc. Thereâs almost never room for Penelope to even get a word in because Eloise talks and talks and keeps on talking.Â
But Iâd like to put forth another interpretation and say that perhaps this dynamic in the relationship isnât all on Eloise. That itâs Penelope herself that prefers it that way. That sheâd much rather talk about Eloise and her issues than to reveal anything truly meaningful or vulnerable about herself.Â
A scene that supports this theory is the scene they have in season 2, episode 1:Â
youtube
This is about as open and vulnerable Penelope ever is with Eloise and in this scene we can observe several things:Â
Despite her being more open than usual, Penelope is still lying to Eloise. She talks about how she enjoys being a wallflower because she can have all the fun without the pressure that comes with being in the spotlight. In reality we know Penelope would love to be in the spotlight but is frightened of being rejected. Sheâs not having fun hugging the wall at all and yet sheâs unable to share that with her friend.Â
As soon as Penelope opens up, albeit only partially, Eloise is quick to notice that, despite pretending not to enjoy the balls and the marriage mart, Penelope actually likes all of these things. This shows not only that she knows Penelope pretty well (as well as Penelope herself will allow Eloise to know her) but that, despite disagreeing on the topic, sheâs supportive of Penelope and listens to her.Â
Itâs also worth comparing the way Eloise behaves with Penelope vs. the way she behaves with Cressida in season 3.Â
Cressida and Eloiseâs relationship is much more balanced and equal because Cressida stands up for herself, pushes back at Eloise when she needs to (like explaining why she needs to marry Lord Debling despite not being compatible) or when Eloise accuses her of telling everyone about Colin helping Penelope find a husband.Â
And Eloise learns to adjust. She becomes a more supportive friend, sharing her knowledge of birds so that Cressida can impress Lord Debling, making conversation with him when Cressida doesnât know what to say and coming to her house to visit her and offer support.Â
My point is: Eloise is not perfect. Sheâs self involved and dismissive of things she isnât personally interested in but is willing to put in the work for a friend if said friend is honest with her about what they need from their friendship.Â
Which leads us back to Penelope. Eloise is the most meaningful relationship in her life (Colin is as well but thatâs a much more fraught relationship for Penelope because she wants to be lovers not friends) and yet she refuses to share the two most important aspects of her life with her friend: her love for Colin and her being Lady Whistledown.Â
Letâs leave Colin to the side for now because Eloise being his sister complicates matters as far as Penelope telling her sheâs in love with him.Â
But why doesnât she tell Eloise about Lady Whistledown? Particularly in season 1, when sheâs just starting to write the scandal sheet. She has no idea where Lady Whistledown will even lead, if sheâll keep going etc. Sheâs basically doing it because sheâs a writer and she wants to have fun talking about the society she knows so well.Â
So why not share the fun with her friend? Itâs pretty clear Eloise doesnât even know Penelope is a writer and hasnât seen anything she ever wrote before Lady Whistledown because, otherwise, sheâd know it was Penelope doing it.Â
Also letâs not forget that, in season 1, Eloise was Lady Whitledownâs number 1 fan. She canât stop talking about how amazing and brilliant she is.Â
And yet Penelope says nothing. Sheâd rather grin proudly behind Eloiseâs back than go: âActually this woman you like so much ⌠I am she. She is me.â
She again fails to do it in season 2, despite knowing that Eloise helped her in escaping the queenâs men at the end of season 1.Â
And then the worst part of their friendship begins as the pressure from the queen mounts and Eloise is more and more determined to find out the identity of Lady Whistledown. Penelope chooses to gaslight and manipulate Eloise for weeks.
Itâs not just Eloiseâs relationship with Theo and her attending political meetings that put her in harmâs way and eventually forces Lady Whistledown to write about her in order for the Queen to stop suspecting Eloise. Itâs Penelopeâs refusal to be honest with her friend.Â
Penelope is so determined to keep Eloise in the dark that even at the end of season 2, when she walks into her bedroom and sees Eloise, she still tries to gaslight her one last time.Â
Penelope: Youâve been reading too much Whistledown. Her voice is echoing in your head.Â
Penelope is stuck in a pattern of toxic behavior because thatâs what sheâs learned to do from her family. She cannot be honest about Lady Whistledown or anything truly meaningful, despite how hard it is for her to remain isolated and in the shadows:Â
Penelope: You have no idea how horrible it has felt to keep this from you! From everyone! For so long.Â
Itâs no wonder that, in their fight scene, Eloise tells her:Â
Eloise: I do not even know you.Â
Thatâs because Penelope herself has made it so that the people closest to her, Eloise and Colin, donât actually know the real her. Sheâs given each of them what she thought they wanted and needed (sheâs very similar to Colin in that way) but not enough of the real her.
So when the Lady Whistledown revelation happens, thereâs nothing for Eloise to fall back on in order to try and understand Penelope.Â
All of a sudden her best friend feels like a stranger. A stranger that has exposed her intimate affairs to the whole world and who tells her this:Â
Penelope: At least I did something. All you ever do is talk about doing something. You have all of these great ambitions, these great plans but I am the one who actually did something great and you canât stand it, can you?Â
Now, because we, as the audience, are privy to Penelopeâs inner world and we know just how riddled with low self-esteem she is and how sheâs used to those closest to her being dismissive of her or her achievements, itâs easy for us to see that Penelope tells Eloise this in anger. Particularly after Eloise tells her:
Eloise: I look at you now and all I feel is pity for you. Sequestered here, in this very room, writing your secret little scandal sheet, tarnishing everyone in town all because you are too afraid to stand up for yourself in reality. You are something else, Penelope. An insipid wallflower, indeed.Â
Eloiseâs words hit too close to home. Too close to the reality of Penelopeâs isolation and fear of being alone and abandoned so she hurts Eloise back the only way she can. By pointing to the fact that despite talking and talking endlessly about all the great things women, and she in particular, could be doing, Eloise isnât actually doing anything.Â
Basically, these two manage to hurt each other worse than anyone else could because theyâre best friends, because they know each other and what makes the other one tick.Â
But from Eloiseâs perspective? In this moment, where sheâs been betrayed by her best friend? Well, Penelope doesnât feel like a friend at all. She feels like someone who got close to her only to exploit her so she could write a scandal sheet and make money off of her misery:Â
Eloise: This was personal.Â
Penelope: Eloise, Iâm so sorry. I was only trying to protect you.Â
Eloise: Is that what you were doing? By writing about me in your latest sheet? By telling the entire world about things I trusted you with? [...] The only person you were interested in saving was yourself. All so you could keep making money at the cost to everyone else. At a cost to Miss Thompson. To my brother. To my entire family. To your entire family. [...] All because of your self serving manipulations.Â
Which brings us to Eloiseâs reaction to the closeness between Colin and Penelope and the announcement of their engagement.Â
To Eloiseâs credit, since their fight, sheâs tried her hardest to be an adult and not punish Penelope more than she needs to. Sheâs very hurt by what her friend did and she canât trust her but she also doesnât want to hurt Pen.
Sheâs kept the Lady Whistledown secret and refuses to tell Colin why their friendship fell apart because she doesnât want Penelope to lose the one friend she still has.Â
She also misses Penelope which is why she ends up telling Cressida about Colin helping her find a husband. Sheâs trying to figure out whatâs going on with her friend and the only way Eloise knows how to figure stuff out is by talking ⌠and talking ⌠and talking ⌠in full earshot of everyone at the ball.Â
But despite all of this, as far as she knows, Penelope is still the girl that divulged her secrets, ruined Marina Thompsonâs reputation and hurt Colin, not only by revealing Marinaâs pregnancy but by taking cheap shots at him only weeks before her brother waltzes into the Bridgerton drawing room to announce heâs engaged to Penelope Featherington.Â
What kind of sister would Eloise be if she wasnât angry at Penelope for that? If she didnât want Colin to find out the truth as soon as possible?Â
Personally, I think sheâs showing real restraint. She cares so much about Penelope that sheâs not dragging her brother into the study the moment she hears the engagement news to tell him that heâs about to marry the dreaded Lady Whistledown.Â
Which brings us back to my earlier point: Penelope never trusted Eloise enough to tell her she was in love with Colin. Maybe if Eloise knew that Penelope has had a crush on Colin since she was 10 years old, she might be able to understand this engagement better.Â
But from her viewpoint, all sheâs likely to see is that Colin is an impulsive romantic who once again has gotten engaged to a girl who is lying to him and using him to avoid social ostracization.Â
I know that by the end of the season Eloise and Penelope will have mended their relationship and they will go back to being the besties we know they are.
But what I would love to see in part 2 of the season is Penelope actually being brave and honest with the two people that she loves most in the world. Not just about her being Lady Whistledown but about the reasons why she became Lady Whistledown. Itâs only by her decision to be vulnerable and open that she can actually mend her relationship with Eloise.Â
Friendships arenât just about being there for your friend, about listening and giving them what you think they need but also about allowing your friend to be there for you. To allow them to truly know you: your fears, your sadness, your hopes and dreams. Thatâs the only way for a friendship to thrive.

Eloise Protecting Pen Vs Pen "Protecting" Eloise. A Contrast.
Both seasons of Bridgerton ends with either Eloise or Penelope "protecting" the other from the queen.
Season 1 ends with Eloise sneaking out from Daphne's ball in order to hinder an attempt to reveal LW. She does so because she thinks that she has convinced LW to take back the damaging stuff she said about Marina and Pen's family. Although she was mistaken as to LW's identity, the fact it was Pen all along did mean she was saved.
So Eloise's motive was to protect Pen, and the outcome was that Pen was protected, and Eloise decided to risk herself in order to protect Pen. She risked the queen's wrath, when she knew the queen was determined to unveil LW. None of this mattered. She wanted to help her friend and this was the way to do it.
When Pen decided to "protect" Eloise, she did so by taking information given to her in trust, exposing it to the entire world in the most inflammatory terms possible, and then played the victim when Eloise found out.
Penelope did this instead of coming forward as LW, having dismissed the suggestion out of hand on the flimsy reasoning that the Queen "might not believe her", even though Pen has accomplices to back her up.
She does this instead of writing favourable things about the Queen, because she doesn't want to change what she writes to protect her friend. She does this instead of telling Eloise so she and Eloise can make a plan together, because she doesn't want Eloise to know about LW, possibly because she's scared of Eloise "taking over".
All of this Penelope prioritised avoiding over not causing Eloise pain.
When Eloise wanted to protect Penelope, she risked her own neck. When Penelope wanted to protect Eloise, she risked Eloise's neck too.

All my bridgerton thoughts, compressed:
1. The true love story is definitely Penelope and Eloise. No matter how hard they try, they cannot pivot away from the fact that friendship is the heart of this season. Be it between Penelope and Eloise, or Eloise and Cressida, or Penelope and Colin: it is that which drives this particular season.
2. To add to the above point: Colin may be Penelope's love interest, but it is Eloise who understands her. Eloise asks if Penelope seems despondent or sad - not just a simple is she okay but instead here are things she could be, which one is it? She knows her friend, no matter what. And Colin, for all that he is, does not find it all too startling that Penelope is suddenly looking for marriage. Eloise does. If Colin's eyes follow Pen across the ballroom, so do Eloise's.
3. Eloise has someone to talk to about the effect her friendship breakup is taking on her. Penelope has no one. I find Nicola to be an increasingly fantastic actor because she holds this tension so very well throughout the whole of Part 1. When Eloise comes to visit her, you see why she asked Colin what Penelope was feeling. Because Penelope is feeling that, has been feeling that ever since. Its so raw and on her face for the world to see but only one person ever looked and understood and read her like a book.
4. The two fingers while fixing her dress? Gag me god gag me
5. I have not seen the point of the Mondrich plot until this season which is where they are really using it to root the show to reality. There are conversations to be had that the society simply does not want to and Mondriches are the embodiment of it. Constantly knocking at society's door and making themselves be heard and fighting for a seat at the table but unwilling to compromise on what feels good and right. It's subtle and ita frustrating and I like that it's getting to people. You're going to get annoyed enough that the looking glass metaphor will play out in real life for you.
6. I see how unhinged Colin is being about Penelope and while I love that for her, I also get how fucked up her situation is rn. She does need stability. She has found her purpose. And I want her to be selfish in protecting that bit of herself. Instead of what she has been doing. She tried with Debling and yes, it was vexing to see how she ran after him but. I get it too? It's not always roses and camomiles. Cressida is the foil to this same narrative. The Bridgertons are foolishly romantic but that is just them. The show is through their lens but we can take a step back and see it for it is as well. I found Debling to be perfect and his reasons for ending everything were as well. If a little crassly done. Colin proposing to Penelope and falling headfirst in love just as she starts looking out for herself? My heart still needs to be sold on this idea, no matter how hot and sexy everything is.
7. The hair grab oh. Colin Bridgerton you slut. You whore. Colin Bridgerton would like to be pegged I promise. These two will actually be the couple who try out shit in the bedroom out of intrigue and discover a hidden kink. Colin finding the answer to his pent up ruminations when Penelope drags her hand tenderly through his hair vs Penelope close to tears because it is a dream come true and how many times has she imagined this and now its happening and its all that and more? Fucking yes
8. The diaries intrigue me. I shit you not I started this season with the firm belief that Colin had in fact NOT travelled lasts season because he was being all quiet about it. End of Ep 1 and I am now convinced he only really wants to talk if people listen and the only one who ever listened was Pen and if she's not there to hear him what is the point of speaking? He functions on 0 braincells because like. He has all the facts he's just not looking at them.
9. Someone talked of how they want to know more about Colin because he's been coming off as 2D and I agree. This is being told more from Penelope's view than Colin's and that is skewing the narrative a bit. I need more than 'pirate fashion-current rake-newly minted fuckboy' from him.
10. I like the yellow bedsheet.
11. The opening with the pining looks from Pen towards Eloise really set the mood and I'm so glad for it. For that matter I feel like Colin's apology for the comment last season was rushed and half hearted and I understand the hot and heavy vibes but they are friends first and that is the heart of the season and so much, so fucking much is left unresolved and I need them to have a couple of heated conversations PLEASE. express emotions fr!!! Beyond breathing hard!!

Okay Y'ALL I saw Episode 5 today and these are the thoughts I jotted down while watching it (PART 2 OF 2)
Please donât read below the cut if you are avoiding spoilers until you get to watch it yourselfÂ
And FYI some of these may not have any context, but I guess it wonât matter cause youâll have context in 7ish hours anyway (also sorry about how long all my thoughts and feelings are lol)
Awh Kate youâre so pretty - kinda weird to see her so chill though - she was so stressed all of season 2 that seeing her so serene is throwing me off tbh - I am so happy for you though my love
Also her outfit that looks like a sari is soooo gorgeous I WANTTTT
Love the cinnamon biscuits vs fruit jellies bit
Portia ma'am please listen to Varley FFS
lol I hope they did in fact fuck again like she wanted
Ugly crying at MY MESSSSSS
PARIS? oufff I love how comfortable she is, just casual teasing chit chats with bestie
âUndefendedâ? Charlotte needs a different hobby pleaseeee
LOLLLLL when did Penelope learn to do her hair and makeup by herself???? Cause thereâs no fucking way she wouldâve looked THAT fucking good after alllll of that lol
We were going to be KNIGHTS!! OMG sweet babiessss
âas much as I doâ I canât even blame anyone for anything theyâve done or said so far tbhÂ
This is such nuanced writing â I understand exactly where pretty much everyone is coming from and thatâs really nice tbhÂ
Omg they really do want Cressida to marry a dinosaurÂ
WTF Cressida you do you girl fuck shit up for Penelope I donât even care do whatever you have to do and go all out and save yourself cause no one else will Iâm so sorry you were ever put in this position Â
We have been acting uncouth AS OF LATE??? as of late????!? Omggg Portia girl pleaseeeee you had ONE job and youâre just gonna pass the buck to your daughters instead? STAHP own up to your shit cause you knowwww they bully her because youuu bullied her and the gall to say this is just happening LATELY on top lmaoÂ
Though like in her eyes I always do see remorse too - I think she just lacks courage to ever really own up to everything in full because sheâs just so guardedÂ
Honestly this is such stellar actingÂ
And also like, Penelope, most of you is your mom my girl - your brains, your overthinking, your inability to just say Yuh I done fucked up my bad lolÂ
Gregâs hat
Yesssss lord Kent find you some Bridgerton bestiesÂ
I actually do love Portia - yeah sheâs been a colossal dick of a mom to Pen but as complex women go, I get her - If she makes amends with Pen for them daily microaggressions and general abuse one day, for real for real, sheâd be really greatÂ
Omg Mama B and Lady D are such big shippers - wish they didnât fully cut out the Lady D stuff from the books though le sighÂ
Eloise has a point - I agree - she had lotsss of alone time to say it - I understand Pens fear completely, but she must realize that her saying this is still soooo much better than him having to find out on his own - and there is no way he wouldn't - and heâd be more hurt by that part than the actual LW part I think and honestly Eloise is right about her being involved in that painful deception too, I wouldnât want my own brother to feel betrayed by me like that either, given how often he wished LW ill out loud - and the longer Pen stays quiet the more guilty Eloise becomes as a sister too - If anything her not immediately snitching makes her moreee team Pen than team Colin - this is still a lowkey loyalty to Pen for sure - I think I may have issued this same ultimatum under these conditions too
Omggg JOHNNNNNN stop heâs having a panic attack why did Fran put him on the spot like thissss????
âAs you rightly mocked me last seasonâ lolllll
Awh Colin and the toastÂ
Eloise should nottttt have done her second toast - now THAT part was uncalled for, but I guess they want to keep the stress levels highÂ
Lmao Kate to the rescueÂ
I loveeeee how close they are sitting in public - but like⌠does nooooo one else see this??? Hips glued together? Hands holding??? Just out in the open?? No one thinks this is insanely intimate for a newly engaged couple of the ton??? Even if itâs a love match? None of the older women are clocking this and saying 1. Sit the fuck apart 2. Did yall fuck already cause yall look like you fucked and we donât even have a wedding date set yet??? Are you not going to even ask for a special license?? You just want her to pop a baby before she technically should and cause more drama?? Like who is in charge of all these fools?? Mama B what is you doing??? Do you not think Colin is being a nasty girl with his wife-to-be?? lol
Lol Anthony I love you, you competitive lil bitchÂ
Lmaooooo Eloise and Penelope being the smartest bitches of the ton YESSSS
Portia trying to show where Pen's brain comes from lol
Muddy boots panic againÂ
LMFAOOOOOOO Mama B your face is going a mile a minute right now listening to the muddy boots
"I saw straight away"Â OH MY FROHN you will end me one day
Pen get your shit together pls grab a brown paper bag or smthnÂ
Oooohhhhh fuck I get itttttt
Cressida girl my bad I get ittttttt sooooo much more - I didnât fully understand her thought process behind what we already knew she was gonna do until just nowwww - they really set it up for her well - girl needed an exit and everyone fully offered her one - I have no issues with this at all tbhÂ
Omg omg this is the most chaotic midnight strike of all time like 6 different things happened at the same time????Â
Well that was some good old fashioned Bridgerton CHAOS Hope y'all enjoyed it too!!!! LESS THAN 8 HOURS TO GOOOOOOOOOO

Bridgerton Spoilers Below:
GuysâŚevery couple on this show has something come between them until the 11th hour. We got more happy Polin than any other couple on the show if weâre being entirely honest. Yâall wanted Penelope to spend half the season making Colin grovel over one bad comment but are upset that Colin was in his feelings for 2 episodes about a huge lie that Penelope didnât even tell him about so he had to find out on his own?
In comparison- Penelope overhears Colin say he would never court her. Penelope ghosts him for at least 4 months during the off season, and stays mad at him for about one full episode, since he apologizes at the very end of episode 1 and she forgives him. Colin finds out Penelope is Whistledown, that sheâs been lying to him and keeping secrets, that the queen has nearly discovered her and is coming after his family, and that Penelope wants to keep writing despite it all, and he speed runs anger to acceptance to pride in about 2 episodes, all while still managing to express his love for her in the small ways he feels comfortable with, like his reassuring looks during the wedding ceremony, or dancing with her at the reception.
And I swear the audience of this show has a perception problem more than the show itself has a writing problem. People want this show to be something else, something that it never planned on being and then upset at the show that is IS and blow their complaints out of proportion. How can you honestly say Polin spent ALL of part 2 fighting when Colin doesnât even find out about Whistledown until the very end of episode 6? Theyâre only really fighting for 1.5 episodes total, and their honeymoon period in episodes 5-6 is very strong. The engagement party with Colinâs sappy speech, Colin goofing off and then dancing in the church, Colin explaining his love for Pen to his brothers, and later saying heâs so in love that he canât write, the engagement ring scene, Colin talking to Eloise about how Penelope and their future is the only thing that matters, Colin confronting Portia and that beautiful scene of Polinâs first time. Yes Penelope is going through it because of the weight of the LW secret, but that was full on honeymoon period mushy in-love Colin.
Happy Polin is good, but not at the expense of glossing over the real problems this couple had just to rush us to the part where Colin just becomes Penelopeâs cheerleader with no interiority of his own. They gave us and Colin that high so that it could come crashing down with the reveal. We know that Colin feels things intensely and deeply, and while that means heâs excitable and giddy during happy moments, in means that his negative feelings are strong too. If you were into Colin when he careened headfirst off a cliff when he was falling for Penelope, thatâs the same guy who careened headfirst off a cliff when he felt betrayed. Heâs a sensitive guy, take it or leave it. Colin was not relegated to being a side character by the show, they allowed him to process and feel his emotions fully and make human and true to his character mistakes that actually give his character more agency than the audience who wanted him to get over LW quickly so we could use him for more sex scenes.
And Iâm not saying the show is perfect in that regard- the very last sex scene when everything was open and Pen was on top shouldâve been longer, the make out session on the street was the perfect opportunity to transition to a second carriage ride that would be more like the books- and Iâm not even saying theyâre perfect in how they used Luke Newton/ Colin - I wouldâve preferred that he was able to stand by Penelopeâs side more at the end, they really fumbled on the Polin vs the world aspect of the story we were all hoping for. BUT for a guy who connects sex with emotional closeness as much as Colin does in the show, it makes perfect sense that part of processing his feelings comes with not being intimate with Penelope and for a guy as sensitive as Colin he needed the grace to sort himself out.

okay so farâiâve heard a lot of bridgerton book fans complain about how the writers âmessed upâ francescaâs story by making it âtoo inclusiveâ in gender-bending michael who is now, in the show, michaela.
whether or not you have an opinion yet, hereâs a little rant on why i think the francesca/michaela pairing is not a bad change and why the show is actually taking a better turn than the books.
to start with, let me be frank about my opinions of the show vs the books. imo, there were some things the show messed up, however, their improvements to the stories of the characters far outweighed the negatives. season 1 was done quite well i think (although there was a rushed epilogue) and it definitely held my attention. season 2 was a bit more of a let down in comparison to the books because the story felt even more rushed in the show than the books which really is saying something. season 3 was delightful but i do wish we had more depth in penelope and colinâs relationship instead of just a checklist few feelings addressed. nonetheless, it was by far the most enjoyable season.
now to love on to francescaâs story. in the original books, francesca is married to john and loves him dearly until he dies leaving her pregnant and alone. michael, her love interest in the book, is johnâs cousin and best friend. francesca, soon after johnâs death, has a miscarriage and struggles with the fact that she very much wants a child. meanwhile, michael struggles with fitting into johnâs shoes and the fact that he has been in love with francesca for years. honestly, this was my least favorite bridgerton book. so much so that i would say i did not like it at all.
the storyline seemed fine at first, but really the entire book was just michael pining after francesca and having a talk with colin after which he forces francesca to marry him and then thereâs just a lot of sex. it was, iâm sad to say, a poorly written book. iâm sure many people like it but i for one canât understand why. the characters never resolve their strugglesâinstead they just get married OUT OF THE BLUE. it didnât feel like a good romance at that point.
the show is trying to (or at least what it looks like they intend to do) give francesca a more fulfilling storyline that doesnât err on the creepy side of things. instead of a crazy, smitten male cousin who forces francesca to marry himâwe have a soft but strong feminine character that doesnât compete with john for francescaâs affections, but rather, allows the viewer to see her as a different love. yes, it explores sexuality and seems âtoo inclusiveâ but honestly i feel like it was a good choice. plus, given that they are both women, francesca will still deal with her infertility problems and perhaps find a solution or be given a different storyline altogether but certainly not worse than the books.
now, many argue that a gender-bending mightâve been better for eloise given her disdain for the ânormalcyâ of mundane society. while that is a valid point, eloiseâs main love interest has already been introduced as marinaâs (lady crane) new husband. assuming the writers want to continue with eloiseâs original love story, they can no longer gender-bend eloiseâs love interest without changing the characters altogether (which is a possibility iâm not opposed to).
all in all, the reason iâm so defensive about francescaâs show arc is probably because when i read the books i knew she deserved better than michael. he was overbearing and obsessed and i didnât see francesca reciprocate anything but mild friendship and lust. iâm hoping that with the liberty to change this character, they give francesca the all-consuming, wonderful love story she deserves.
sorry for the rant haha :)

Colin and Eloise competing for the most shittiest friend award.
Bonus points for acting as though they are bestowing a favour to Penelope by deeming to speak to her (Episode 1 Colin going âdonât make me say it, I miss youâ vs. Episode 3 Eloise with her haughty attitude-y apology to Penelope only to go and inform her brother later on about it, as though she did something so big and tedious).
Sheesh I hate them both right now
