Kino Lorber Launching ‘Kino Cult’ as Packaged-Media Label

Home entertainment distributor Kino Lorber is launching its Kino Cult genre brand as a packaged-media imprint focusing on collector-oriented Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD releases.

The Kino Cult imprint will debut as its own label in October 2023 with special Blu-ray editions of Jess Franco’s erotic horror masterpiece Lorna … the Exorcist (1974, featuring Lina Romay), as well as 4K restorations of Alien Outlaw (1985) and The Dark Power (1985), two video rental favorites from North Carolina indie Phil Smoot.

Kino Cult’s premiere 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release will be a deluxe edition of Clive Barker’s Underworld (1985), directed by George Pavlou, and featuring Denholm Elliott and Ingrid Pitt. Upcoming 4K releases for 2024 include the exploitation classic Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS (1975) and its sequels, Ilsa: Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks (1976), Ilsa the Tigress of Siberia (1977), and Ilsa, the Wicked Woman (1977).

While focusing mainly on horror and science fiction, Kino Cult will continue to embrace its trademark brand of “unapologetically weird” with such diverse genres as European erotica, grindhouse classics, and cinematic rediscoveries that defy categorization.

“Some of the most exciting rediscoveries are happening in the realm of cult cinema,” said Kino Cult curators Frank Tarzi and Bret Wood. “These strange and twisted movies are so unique that we feel they deserve their own imprint within the Kino Lorber family of labels.”

Kino Cult will expand its partnership with legendary cult label Something Weird, with collector’s edition releases to be announced soon.

The Cursed Weapons, Charcter Intros

The Curse Weapons is a story created by me, following the story of Zachary and the young Fairchild twins in 1922 Los Angeles.

Zachary Arash Carstairs: After his mom died when he was 7 in 1911 from old age and declining health after giving birth to him in her 40s he went to live with his brother Alastair and Alastiar's boyfriend Thomas. Later at the age of 13 he became Parabatai with Thomas' younger sister Catherine.

Catherine Barbra Lightwood: The youngest of Sophie and Gideon Lightwood. With her middle name taken from a sister she never knew. She was partially raised by her older sister Eugina who taught her that she didn't need a man to be strong and fierce. Childhood friends with Zachary -who she later became parabatai with at 12- they bonded easily being outcast from the rest of the Clave because of their brothers for reasons they both found stupid.

Agatha Marigold Fairchild: Daughter of the retired council Charlotte Fairchild. Agatha and the rest of her family moved to Idris when she was very young. She and her Twin sister Emily became childhood friends with JOseph and Alexander Lightwood being the only kids their age whose parents didn't strongly discourage playing with. When she was older she often visited London to see her older brother Matthew. While she was there she made good friends with Catherine and Zachary. ONe day she hopes to become a strong leader like her mother and help her brothers to love whoever they want.

Emily Jessamine Fairchild: Daughter of the retired council Charlotte. Emily and the rest of her family moved to Idris when she was one. She and her Twin sister Agatha became childhood friends with Alexander and Joseph Lightwood being the only kids their age whose parents didn't strongly discourage playing with. When she was older she often visited London to see her older brother Matthew who she greatly admires and wants to copy his travels through the world. While there she became a close friend of Catherine and good friends with Zachary. When she was 15 she ended up developing a crush on him. She became interested in engineering when she was 13 and helps her father and aunt Grace in the laboratory when she can.

Philip Edward Blackthorn: Part of a long lost descendants of Ezekiel Blackthorn who moved to los angeles over a century ago. Philip grew up with knowledge that he was a descendant of shadowhunters; he was offered little else in knowledge of his lineage. He lost his older brother early on in the Great War.

Maria Evelyn Ashdown: The only daughter of the Ashdowns, Teh head of the Los Angeles Institute. Maria didn't start seriously training to be a shadowhunter until she was 14 -when the shadowhunter ranks had fallen short after the great war- when her mother relented and allowed her to begin training. She is a fierce fighter despite her mom's wishes that she simply stay at home and become a respctible wife. And she definetly, absolutley does not have a crush on the institutes resident maid.

Norman Michael Ashdown: The eldest child of the Ashdowns. His mom -Nancy Ashdown- expects him to run the institute when his father retires despite his wish to simply reside and read all the books in the institute's library and create an actual appropriate shadowhunter family tree.

June Lucile Elliott: Being partly kicked out and partly running away, June left her parents 2 years ago when she came out to them. She managed to get a job as the institute's maid. Even though she's supposed to be helping everyoen in the institute she's more turned in Nancy Ashdowns personal helper. She's very stubborn and used to judgement from others but does apritiate the Ashdown's children kindness to her and often repays them by leaving extra treats by their bedsides.

The man is a doctor, he had to have gone through med school and biology? So rather than the others he knows just how important Aftercare is for both the body and the mind. The man WILL NOT REST until you are comfortable and happy and have had just a little bit of a snack and water. KING of aftercare we love a smart man.

E-Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)

Like a lot of people, I think this man FUCKS. I do think that in college he had a period of time where he just slept around as a way to be less stressed with all of his classes and life in general. Don’t worry he used protection, and was safe about everything so VERY experienced and knows what he is doing.

On the other hand he could be like a total virgin but i doubt it.

I think he is the second most romantic just behind Elliott. While Elliott has the writing romance bone, Harvey is more of a romantic person that is just a bit clumsy? He will put roses and make dinner, but might burn the dinner and forgets to cut the thorns off. It’s endearing though. Like the hot air balloon date.

The Drunk Tank echoes with the pleasant sounds of laughter and conversation, the voices of the people she loves reaching Emma even in the relative seclusion of the bench. Content, she takes another sip of the wine she stole from Trystan, then looks at him when he speaks again.

“I know this probably doesn’t mean much coming from me, but… I think your father would be happy with how you handled yourself today.”

Reaching out, she covers his hand with hers. “He’d be happier that I had you helping me out.”

Trystan laces their fingers together. “There’s… something else. Something I’ve been meaning to ask.”

She raises her eyebrows and gestures for him to continue.

“It’s about… your family.”

“You mean my mother.”

“Yeah. You’ve talked about your father, and I know you’re close with your uncle. But you never mentioned your mother.”

Slowly, she pulls her hand back. She ignores the way her skin misses his warmth. “Has it never occurred to you that there’s a reason for that?”

“It has. But…” He brings himself to a halt when she stands. “Emma, wait.”

“I need some air.”

She slips outside through the back door, confident that the others didn’t see her leave. She doesn’t think she can handle their concerned questions. Not right now. But she’s not surprised when she feels Trystan walking up and stopping short of reaching her side. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“It’s fine.”

“Clearly it’s not. I’m sorry. Can we pretend I never asked?”

It’s tempting but… She sighs. “My mother walked out on me and my dad when I was six. I never saw her again.”

He inhales softly. “Emma. I’m sorry.”

“She told my dad she would call me as soon as she found a place. She never did.”

“Do you know where she’s now?”

“Dead. A stroke when I was twenty-one.” She shrugs. “My uncle found out through mutual friends and told me. I can’t imagine why he thought I’d care.”

“Didn’t you?”

She shakes her head. “You know, I had a Greek mythology phase when I was growing up.”

Unfazed by the non sequitur, he answers without a pause. “Don’t most kids?”

Her lips curve in a smile. “Maybe. There were so many myths that I loved. But I hated the myth of Persephone.”

“I don’t see much to love in the story of a god kidnapping and raping his niece.”

“That’s not it. Also, I prefer the versions where she has some agency, thank you very much. But that’s not what I hate. It’s Demeter.”

“Why? Demeter goes to… Oh.”

“Yeah. Demeter goes to extreme lengths, to Zeus himself, in order to rescue her daughter. God, that made me so mad. Why did Persephone get to have a mother who would go to hell for her, and I couldn’t even get a mother who’d want to see me?” She fixes her gaze on the metal trash can glinting under the alley lights. “Not all Demeters risk Hades to get Persephone back. Some of them just… couldn’t care less about Persephone in the first place.”

Trystan rests a tentative hand on her shoulder. “Emma, I know we don’t know each other very well, but I know this without a shadow of a doubt. It’s her loss.”

“Maybe.” She pushes her hair back. “You know, I didn’t care when my mother died. She wasn’t my mother, really. She just provided me with half my DNA.”

“Why do you feel guilty about that?”

“I don’t.” She blows out a breath when he remains silent. “All right. I don’t feel guilty, per se. I just… I guess I feel a little guilty for not feeling guilty. If anything, it was a relief to finally get that closure.”

“That’s understandable.”

“I know. Worked through all of that in therapy already. But…”

“It’s a sore spot.”

“Yeah.” Soothed by his understanding, she finally turns to face him. “Sorry I turned a celebration into a venting session. But it’s your own fault for following me out here.”

He laughs. “Leave it to you to turn it all around so it’s my fault in the end.”

Her lips twitch. “I’m just saying.”

“Do you want to stay here? We don’t have to go back inside.”

“No.” She squeezes his hand briefly. “We’re celebrating tonight. She doesn’t get to take that away from me.”

He brushes his fingers against her cheek. “Good.”

They stand there, eyes locked, until Tuppence comes bounding out. Laughing, Emma leans down to stroke her head. “Come on, Your Highness. You too, Trystan. I could use another glass of wine.”

“Fine. But you get your own this time.”

The door clicks shut behind them. The stars glow invisible in the sky, the only witnesses to a conversation that lightened someone’s heart.

He’d asked her earlier in the day to find him, and now he leaned against the wall and gave her an easy smile, which she returned. She liked Terra. She liked how comfy he was, how easy he was to be around. He gave a nod towards the wooded area nearby, the expanse of forest that hugged the edge of one of the rivers that ran around the Land of Departure. “Berserk, however, is up and hunting. Thought we'd go make it a game. You in?”

“Sanji,” Zeff whispers, hunched by the kitchen door and peering out, tone hushed and severe. Usually it's eggplant or brat or boy. Must be important. When Sanji totters over he's barely hip-height, far too young to be in a galley and far too young to be anywhere else. A hand plants on his head carefully to corral him, aim his gaze outward, and above and below they share the two-inch gap of the door and look out at the dining room. “Look.”

Saïx was pretty familiar with Xemnas’ abilities. Not all of them, which would infuriate him if only he was lucky enough to be allowed such a feeling for Saïx always wanted to know more, but for the most part Xemnas’ strange quirks and magical talents had stopped being unexpected. He’d grown numb to Xemnas floating off of the floor, to lights responding and things moving with barely even a glance, to thorns of nothing winding around things Xemnas’ wanted brought closer - himself included.

Trained Talent (nsfw)

There was a bit of a stereotype about jesters; that they were all secretly miserable, hard done by, only putting on a brave face and faking their cheer because at all times they were at risk of being admonished by whichever member of royalty they tried to entertain. That performers wore masks and actually suffered behind their smiles. There was a nugget of truth to it - a smile is a good way to cover up a frown, after all - but the truth that was more potent was that being a clown was a position of power.

I saw people state inside job is antisemitic bc of the lizard people, who run the world and drink blood. this is a common antisemitic conspiracy theory that implies jewish people are a secret society of lizards that controls the world. also implies they're not human and evil

edit: i was informed that the theory actually, at its core, revolves around jewish people controlling lizard people. "Jews run the banks and the media, thus they run the world." the idea of a jewish secret society is a problem that has existed for centuries and has a long history to it, and because of this, accusations of a celebrity being a lizard is antisemitic regardless of their religion

While obviously i'm not going to argue with anyone (im not jewish and if jewish people say the show is antisemitic, it because it is), i was curious about the IRL "reptoid" celebreties' religions and these were the ones i could find in the internet

edit: as i said, celebreties' religions aren't as important as the context around the whole thing. and in addiction to that, judaism isn't just a religion. its an ethnicity aswell. meaning that, as far as i understand it, any ethnically jewish person could practise any religion

not going to give my opinion in this or the show (again, I'm not jewish so i don't have the knowledge and nuances necessary). however, learning that Zuckerberg used to be jewish does recontextualize all of the "he's secretly a lizard/alien" jokes

also, Inside job's producer, Alex hirsch, has jewish family from his father side, but was raised agnostic

edit: again, it's an ethnicity. zuckerberg and hirsch are still ethnically jewish and i'd like to reforce this "I'm not jewish so i don't have the knowledge and nuances necessary". anything i say here about judaism should be taken with a grain of salt
