'A summer in Greece for three best friends ends in the unthinkable when only two return home in this new novel from Ella Berman. . . .'
(Storygraph synopsis of Before We Were Innocent by Ella Berman)
Honestly, this book was okay. I breezed through it in a day, and aspects definitely lured me in, but the book ended with loose ends/open for interpretation. I know it's a mystery/dark book, but I found the tone quite sad and a little depressing. Also, I was hoping the girls would have had more of an experience the first few weeks in Greece; it was so negative that there wasn't even a moment to bond or understand the characters. I actually felt very disconnected from Bess.

A summer in Greece for three best friends ends in the unthinkable when only two return home in this new novel from Ella Berman. . . . Ten years ago, after a sun-soaked summer spent in Greece, best friends Bess and Joni were cleared of having any involvement in their friend Evangeline’s death. But that didn’t stop the media from ripping apart their teenage lives like vultures. While the girls were never convicted, Joni, ever the opportunist, capitalized on her newfound infamy to become a motivational speaker. Bess, on the other hand, resolved to make her life as small and controlled as possible so she wouldn’t risk losing everything all over again. And it almost worked. . . . Except now Joni is tangled up in a crime eerily similar to that one fateful night in Greece. And when she asks Bess to come back to LA to support her, Bess has a decision to make. Is it finally time to face up to what happened that night, exposing herself as the young woman she once was and maybe still is? And what happens if she doesn’t like what she finds?

hi!! my first post, but i’m trying to read 10 books this year because i have so many on my shelf and i want to add more; but the fact that most of them are unread makes me disappointed in myself lol. so, right now im 30% through ‘before we were innocent’ by ella berman and gonna tryy to finish tomorrow or tonight so we’ll see. if i remember, i’ll keep this blog updated just to track myself because i doubt anyone cares about my book progress lmao.
a little about me?
well i don’t want this to be on my digital footprint so i’m not gonna include my name or anything used to identify me so here’s what i came up with:
i’m a girl, and a minor; i guess you could say i’m not mentally stable but like who is? i use tumblr for the ed and book side, i start projects and rarely finish them, i like apps like this where you can connect with others while being anonymous because it’s easier than being exposed to strangers. umm i listen to all music mainly wallows, mitski, tyler the creator, faye webster, daniel cesaer, drake, and so much more but those are the ones i’ve been on recently.
anyway, that’s all i’ve got for now; if you made it this far thank you for taking the time to read this so to return the favor, i’ll read my book lol. updates coming soon! (if i remember..)

wait here are MY face claims that i came up with when i was reading which means it’s all very interesting cause it was late.
i could see olivia as saylor curda or maybe even liza soberano (i will admit though seeing the name i immediately thought of rodrigo)
i couldn’t figure out avery but emily rudd as cindy berman popped into my head but it doesn’t feel right
and i had SO many ideas for vicky but none of them stuck
( i don’t know if you’re active on twitter but i did have the sudden urge to use ella purnell and sophie nélisse as face claims because of that one unhinged smau where their fan names are vickie and anna)
Imma be so real, Olivia was 100% inspired by Rodrigo 👀 and anon, you ate with these face claims - totally see the vision
I'm still stumped with who I'd choose for Avery and Vicky because although I'm able to envision them while writing, the face claim part is still hard since they're pretty new. Olivia's new but the difference is I've been planning her arrival/the premise of her character for a while. But I'm sure it'll come to me like Henry's face claim did
(btw, I'm definitely taking these face claims into consideration)

2024 Book Reviews (July-December)
5 stars
The Book of Elsewhere (Keanu Reeves and China Mieville, 2024): An immortal warrior (called Unute, nicknamed B) has been having a centuries-long existential crisis about his inability to stay dead and is now working for the US military (who find his berserker rages useful) in exchange for a way to end his immortality. Which sounds tropey but I found it written in a compelling way. Interspliced with the modern action is flashbacks to B sometimes committing to being a solitary killing machine and sometimes trying to have a normal everyday life (that he can't have living children of his own really messes with him). There's an equally immortal prehistoric pig trying to kill B, a goal that has to compete with the cult that can bring people back to life who also want to kill him. Very strange but appealing prose make for an interesting read.
Revenge of the Sith novelization (Matthew Stover, 2004): If you've ever wanted to experience the prequel movies in a more competent format, I would reccomend checking it out as it really shows why the Jedi Order fell at this pivotal point and makes Anakin sympathetic even amongst his many flaws. It also just has really evocative prose.
4 stars
Tiger Queens (Stephanie Thornton, 2014): Tells the stories of four women closely tied to the rise of Genghis Khan and his legacy. The characters and worldbuilding are compelling. The first third focuses on Borte, the first wife of Genghis Khan, who is a fierce character and makes a compelling look into the slow building of the Mongolian Empire. After her are Alaqai and Fatima, Genghis' daughter and a Persian captive respectively, and unfortunately the writing only does so much for the pacing issue here; Alaqai goes from a cautious friendship to suddenly being in love and Fatima abandons her revenge quest in favor of being an ardent supporter over the course of several timeskips. The pacing issue is kind of inevitable given the book goes from the very early days of the empire, to the competing heirs after Genghis Khan's death, and ending with Sorkhokhtani (one of Genghis' daughters-in-law) stabilizing the empire by placing her eldest son in power (her second son would become Kublai Khan). Overall I really enjoyed it.
2 stars:
The Comeback (Ella Berman, 2020): A young actress on the verge of being given a film award abruptly withdraws from public awareness; it is revealed that she was abused by the adults around her. One would expect this to be either a powerful perspective of a young woman who had been abused by Hollywood in general and her mentor in specific, or a psychological thriller about her enacting revenge on Able and ruining his career in return. Unfortunately it doesn't really manage to be either.
Coming Back (Jessi Zabarsky, 2021): This graphic novel has a cute cozy art style. I like what I think it's trying to say about tradition and when to move past it. Unfortunately it was hard to be drawn in; the worldbuilding and characters were frustratingly vague in the beginning and there wasn't enough there to win me back. The third act felt weak in general and especially the conflict resolution for the main relationship (one character does something selfish but it's her partner who has to apologize for being mad about it).
The Butcher and The Wren (Alaina Urquhart, 2022): It's a debut novel and feels like it. the writing, especially the delivery of information, feels really clunky at points. This is more of a novella than a full length novel and it really needed that extra space to breathe. It feels like a rapid chase with characters too shallow to hold my interest.
Nonfiction:
Sick Caesars (Michael Grant, 2000): The emotional and physical illnesses that multiple Roman emperors experienced and how it affected their reigns.
After the Stork (Saro Rosenquist, 2010): A study about postpartum depression and ways to prevent it.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (Caitlin Doughty, 2014):
Sipping Dom Perignon Through a Straw (Eddie Ndopu, 2023): An autobiography about his life with spinal muscular atrophy and his work as a disability activist.

books i read in nov 2024
a pretty forgettable month tbh. but how about that arcane league of legends animated netflix special tv show!!
eat a peach - david chang ★★★★★ (memoir)
this is definitely not a universal 5* but it came to me at exactly the right time of my life. it was often brutal and unsympathetic - from one former asshole to another, it was surprisingly relatable considering how little i know about the food industry
milk fed - melissa broder ★★★★☆ (contemporary)
i can definitely understand why this is the author's most popular book. it's sharp, unflinching, and surprisingly grok-able given her usual more woowoo fare. still not for everyone but possibly the most widely accessible of her books!
salvation of a saint - keigo higashino ★★★★☆ (mystery)
solid and enjoyable, not much to say about this one
blacktop wasteland - s.a. cosby ★★★★☆ (thriller)
character work felt shallower than i've come to expect from the author but it was still totally gripping and exhilarating to read
the mistletoe mystery - nita prose ★★★★☆ (mystery novella)
definitely won't convert you if you haven't enjoyed the full length novels, but it's a cute addition to the series for those who enjoy it. i wish it was full length with a proper whodunnit though!
all the missing girls - megan miranda ★★☆☆☆ (thriller)
the gimmick/structure of this book didn't work for me. boring and predictable and just a worse version of this author's other books
before we were innocent - ella berman ★★☆☆☆ (thriller)
straddles the line between crazy thriller and contemplative contemporary in a way that just makes it really boring. the characters can't sustain a slower introspective pace because they're totally flat. but there's nothing else happening either! big disappointment as i was looking forward to this one
so thirsty - rachel harrison ★★☆☆☆ (horror)
MC was extremely annoying and the book is very one-track. you know what's happening from the synopsis but it takes the whole book for the MC to get on track!! if anything about this book sounds interesting, just scroll back up and check out melissa broder instead
your shadow half remains - sunny moraine ★★☆☆☆ (horror)
possible because it was an audiobook but i got absolutely nothing from this. nothingburger of a novella
[DNF] they can't kill us until they kill us - hanif abdurraqib ★★★☆☆ (essays)
i respect every single snippet i've seen from this book on tumblr, which is many, but unfortunately i simply don't know enough about music to follow this book
