You're in my head
I had plans for the weekend
But wound up with you instead
Back here again
Got me deep in my feelings
When i should be in your bed
You and i go back to like '09 it's like forever
And you were there my lonely nights, yeah, keeping me together
So wouldn't it make sense if I was yours and you could call me your baby
But we say we're just, say we're just
Friends
Just for now
Yeah but friends don't say words that
Make friends feel like more than just
Friends
Just for now
Now I'm over pretending
So let's put the "end" in friends
Friends
Just for now
Yeah but friends don't say words that
Make friends feel like more than just
Friends are not supposed to get too close
And feel emotions that we're feeling now, now, now
We ain't slowing down, down, down
But once we cross the line, there's no denying you and I can never turn around, round, round
Know we'll never be the same
You and I go back to like '09 it's like forever
And you were there my lonely nights, yeah, keeping me together
So wouldn't it make sense if I was yours and you could call me your baby
But we say we're just, say we're just
Friends
Just for now
Yeah but friends don't say words that
Make friends feel like more than just
Friends
Just for now
Now I'm over pretending
So let's put the "end" in friends

Johnnie Beattie, one of our best loved comedian/actor’s was born November 9th 1926 in Govan.
Johnny entertained Scotland since before I was but a glint in my auld man’s eye, in a career spanning 63 years, he worked as a comedian, singer, television games show host, after-dinner speaker, master of ceremonies and as an actor on stage, screen and television: quite an accomplishment for someone who left school aged 16 to begin work as an apprentice electrician at Fairfield’s shipyard in his native Govan.
After leaving St Gerard’s High School in Govan he joined the nearby dockyards in an apprenticeship, he got involved with amateur dramatics, and by the mid-1950s he had become a stand-up comedian and never looked back.
By the 60’s he had his own Saturday night spot on the BBC with Johnny Beattie’s Saturday Night Show, which featured him playing many different colourful characters, including his alter ego “Glaikit O'Toole”. My own mum loved his quiz show on STV, Now You See It, where I think the jackpot prize was £500! Johnny has also done some acting and of course one of the shows is that old Scottish favourite Taggart, and on the big screen in The Big Man. On the set of Scotch and Wry he struck up a friendship with Gregor Fisher and went on to appear along side him in Rab C Nesbitt.
More recently Johnny played Malcolm Hamilton in the Scottish soap opera River City, a role which he had starred in since the show began in 2002.
Beattie has also had a couple of hit songs in Scotland, including the brilliant Glasgow Rap, he is happily enjoying his retirement after leaving the aforementioned River City in 2015 after 13 years.
He also gave time to charitable causes and raised thousands of pounds for charities; the most notable of these were St Margaret of Scotland Hospice in Clydebank, the Scottish Show business Benevolent Fund and Friends of Winter Gardens in Rothesay, he was also president of the Scottish Music Hall Society – a role he held for many years.
I love this wee anecdote from the man, he tells the story of how he  was standing outside the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr in 1952….Suddenly, he was spotted by a wee wifey, who then approached him.
“It’s you! It’s definitely you.” “Yes, well, it is.” “Ah jist knew it was you.” “Yes, and you’re right. It’s me.” At this point,  Johnny said he took on a satisfied air, and prepared to sign an autograph. “Aye, I knew it was you,” added the wifey. “You were supposed to dae my windaes last week and you never showed up. Where the hell wur ye?”
At 93 Johnnie Beattie’s health was fading and he was admitted to the St Margaret’s Hospice in Clydebank where he died on 9th July 2020.

“SEVEN YEARS WITH LASHES FOR M. SIMONS,” Brantford Expositor. November 4, 1932. Page 6. ---- Justice Moved Swiftly for Brantford Jewel Thief ---- His Wife Is Under Arrest Here Pending Investigation ---- Justice moved with bewildering speed to-day for Milton Simons, Brantford man, who was captured here yesterday, after robbing Land’s jewelry store at Hamilton of $2500 in jewels and cash. Pleading guilty to two charges of robbery while armed, he was sentenced to-day to seven years in Portsmouth penitentiary on each charge, the terms to run concurrently, and to receive 12 lashes six to be inflicted at the end of three months and six at the end of six months.
On a charge of stealing a taxicab, Simons pleaded not guilty. The charge was changed to one of taking a car without the consent of the owner and Simons was sentenced to six months which will be concurrent with the other terms.
Simons’ appearance in court today marked the end of his brief crime trail. He stalked into the jewelry store early yesterday, held up the clerk and a Montreal salesman, grabbed 32 diamond rings, three watches, and more than $100 in cash, and then left the store after tying up the clerk and salesman.
He entered the waiting automobile and drove towards Brantford. En-route he forced the taxi-driver to leave the automobile and then continued his wild flight. Outside Brantford, he ran into a cordon of policemen who had been awaiting his appearance and 45 minutes after the robbery was en route back to Hamilton under guard.
WIFE ARRESTED Mrs. Elsie Simons, wife of Milton (“Nick”) Simons, was arrested here at a local hotel yesterday following the capture of Simons, alleged jewelry robber and holdup man here, earlier in the day.
The woman appeared before Magistrate S A Jones charged with vagrancy and at the request of Chief Stanley was remanded in custody for ten days until the chief satisfies himself about the valuable jewelry found in her possession.
Mrs. Simons, who gave her address as 212 Bay street, Hamilton, and who is stated to have lived in Chicago before she married Simons, has a fine wardrobe. Her appearance in court this morning bore out the statement of the police that she possessed plenty of very good and fashionable clothes. A white hat with white short fur coat and salmon pink and white dress made her conspicuous in the drab surroundings. Seated next to a local Indian woman arrested as a drunk, she presented a distinct contrast.
Mrs. Simons was interrogated by the police but appeared guarded in her statements regarding her husband and herself. Local relatives did not know of her presence here. She came to this city early yesterday morning, and police suspect this was part of a plan the pair made the night previous to the robbery. Police thought she might have been here to receive the stolen property.
Chief Stanley notified provincial officers and headquarters of city police in this country of the possession of the jewelry. Last evening Detectives Waterhouse and Strohn of Toronto came to the city to see if the jewelry was part of some recent hauls made in Toronto. They were not able to identify any of the goods taken from Mrs. Simons.
While Chief Stanley did not divulge the reason why he thought so he stated that he suspected the jewelry found in the possession of Mrs. Simons was stolen in Kansas City.
In the intervening ten days the police will send out a description of the jewelry and expect to have something definite.
It is also expected here that Mrs. Simons will be re-arrested by the Hamilton police as an accomplice in the robbery with which her husband is charged.
[AL: Simons was 29, married, had a long criminal history with sentences served in the Ohio State Reformatory and Michigan State Reformatory, was apparently trained as an electrician, and had a dagger tattoo on his left arm and shield with two clover leaves on his right. At Kingston Penitentiary, he was convict #2844 and actually ended up working in the electrician’s gang, but his conduct became increasingly irrational and he was considered in early 1934 to be mentally ill. He was transferred to Rockwood Mental Hospital shortly thereafter, and was ‘cured’ because he was back at the penitentiary by July 1936. He was released October 1937.]

Union repping Columbia University custodians plans to sue over anti-Israel protest violence
A powerful union representing some of Columbia University’s custodians plans to sue the Ivy League school after a handful of staffers were allegedly mistreated when an unruly mob of anti-Israel protesters took over an academic building during last week’s on-campus unrest.
The Transport Workers Union, which counts university workers among its 155,000 members, ripped Columbia’s embattled president Minouche Shafik for failing to better protect employees when masked pro-terror rioters broke in and barricaded themselves inside the historic Hamilton Hall last Tuesday.
“This is appalling, disgusting and we are not going to stop until we figure out every means of legal recourse,” the union’s president, John Samuelsen, told The Post on Tuesday.
“Frankly, Columbia cannot be relied upon to protect their blue collar workers.”
The looming legal action, first reported on by Politico, comes after at least two Columbia custodians and a security officer were on shift when the mob violently stormed into the building, padlocked doors and blocked off entrances with metal barricades, tables and chairs.
Dramatic images from inside the building showed one of Columbia’s maintenance crew members clashing with a masked protester.
Samuelsen — whose union’s local branch reps more than 700 Columbia staffers, including custodians, security guards and electricians — railed against the school’s prez for waiting too long to send in the NYPD to break up the violence.
In a letter fired off to Shafik late Monday, the union boss alleged staffers trying to flee the building were told by at least one “smarmy, sanctimonious, elitist … occupier” that “this moment is bigger than you.”
The custodians had to “courageously fight” their way through a barricaded exit, according to Samuelsen.
The female security officer who was on shift managed to get out of the building as protesters were sealing themselves inside — but she is still “shaken” by her encounter with “the occupying protesters (aka privileged kids) who verbally attacked her in a very aggressive” manner, he added.
“There is no doubt that the university was aware that outside agitators were operating on campus and posed an increased risk to university employees, yet the university continued to assign their work routines as if it was ‘business as usual’,” Samuelsen wrote in the letter.
“President Shakif, imagine for a moment being in the boots of the blue-collar custodians and security officer. They came to work to earn a day’s pay so they could take care of their families and ended up being held against their will while being subjected to physical and verbal abuse.”
“Imagine yourself coming to work and being the victim of a serious crime because Columbia University didn’t care enough about you to engage in common sense protective measures,” he added.
The union honcho is calling on Shafik to meet with him to discuss compensation for the staffers, as well as demanding the school hand over any footage from inside the building.
Samuelsen has asked, too, for a breakdown of students and “outside agitators” who were arrested during the saga.
“It’s not only Columbia, we are in the middle of identifying all the people who occupied Hamilton Hall, who were not only students,” he told The Post.
“How outrageous how an ideological agitator would feel so entitled to press a blue collar custodian into their cause.”
In total, the NYPD said they cuffed 109 protesters at Columbia during the Hamilton Hall takeover.
Mayor Eric Adams revealed last week, citing arrest data, that nearly half of those nabbed weren’t students.

"PORTSMOUTH HAS ITS ATTRACTIONS, COURT INFORMED," Hamilton Spectator. October 20, 1933. Page 7. --- Withers Would Sooner Go There Than Burwash ---- Asked the Magistrate to Change His Sentence ---- And the Bench Willingly Obliged ---- "I would appreciate it if your worship could make it a penitentiary term instead of at Burwash," James B. Withers, Toronto, charged with forging and uttering a cheque for $25, told Magistrate Burbidge in police court this morning. "I have never learned anything in the reformatory, but I can learn a trade at Kingston."
The magistrate obliged the accused and imposed a term of two years in Kingston. He had previously imposed a sentence of two years less one day definite, plus one year indefinite in the Ontario reformatory. He had been convicted in Toronto for a number of similar offenses in the past.
It was testified that the accused had made out a cheque on a typewriter and had signed the name of his previous employers, a Toronto firm.
On Probation Appearing for sentence on charges of theft of $300 and $900, respectively, from their employers, Fred Drage, Toronto, and Thomas McDonald, St. Catharines, were placed on probation for terms of four years. Very stringent terms of probation were ordered by the magistrate. Both men must put up personal bonds of $1,000, while Drage must find two sureties of $250 each or one of $500, and McDonald must find two sureties of $400 each, or one of $800. McDonald must also sign the pledge and surrender his liquor permit. It was stated that Drage took the money to send his wife, a victim of tuberculosis, to the Old Country. Cecil Robinson appeared for Drage and McDonald was represented by Herman Rogers, St. Catharines.
John Schuler, charged with obtaining board by false pretenses and illegal possession of firearms, appeared for sentence and was placed on suspended sentence for two years when Cecil Robinson, defending, submitted that arrangements for restitution had been made.
Faces Stern Punishment In order that a medical examination to see if his physical condition is such that his punishment might include the lash, George McWade, convicted of assaulting a nine-year-old girl, was remanded until Tuesday for sentence.
On request of A. A. Marck, defending, Frank Jedruszak, 51 Robert street, charged with forgery and attempted uttering of a cheque for $5, was remanded for a week. Bail was set at $1,000.
Pleading guilty to a charge of keeping a common betting house, William Depew, 276 Hughson street north, was fined $25 or 21 days. Only a small sum and a few betting slips, were found in his possession. At the request of Constable Bailey, of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, adjournments for one week were allowed in the cases of George Alaska and John Godava, charged with possession of spirits of unlawful manufacture.
Was Acquitted Steve Sobkowich, Earl street, charged with obtaining city relief to the amount of $14.76 by false pretenses, was acquitted when the magistrate held that no evidence of false pretenses had been placed before him.
[Withers was 25, an electrician by trade, sickly, married, and from Hamilton. He had been in the Guelph Reformatory before. He was convict #3212 at Kingston Penitentiary, but was transferred January 1934 to Collin's Bay Penitentiary and released in December 1934.]

Ronald Allen Hamilton was born in South Bend, Indiana on November 9, 1950. His parents, Melvin Hamilton and Leota Marie Hamilton, were perfect family planners. Marta Sue was born exactly two years, four months, and three days after Ron. Terrill Lee came along precisely two years, four months, and three days after Marta Sue.
Ron remembers kneeling by his bed at a young age acknowledging Jesus as God’s Son who had died on the cross in payment for his sins, asking Jesus to forgive those sins, and accepting Jesus into his heart to save him. Salvation and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ are the means by which one can live a life in heaven forever. This is the gospel in full, the gospel to which Ron dedicated his life.
Ronnie, as his friends and family called him, was an active young boy who loved to tease and be funny. Although loving and respectful to his parents at home, his quick wit got him into trouble a time or two at school. Melvin, Ron’s dad, was of gentle disposition and an electrician by trade. Ronnie spent his summers working alongside his dad in the hot sun, digging trenches for the electrical conduit. He acquired a bleached blonde head of hair and a dark tan, earning himself the title, “soil engineer.”
Ron’s mom, Leota, stayed at home managing Melvin’s books, running a tight family budget, and ensuring the children received musical training. When Ronnie was 11, Marty 9, and Terry 7, Leota hired a pianist to teach the children trios arranged by Harold DeCou. Mom Hamilton was inspired to make a professional recording of her children. Terry sang the melody, Marty the alto, and Ronnie the tenor.
Leota was of strong character and, by example, taught her children to demonstrate character as well. Travel time in the car was not wasted. The family would sing gospel songs whenever they traveled, harmonizing in three parts. Mom Hamilton is the reason each child became a proficient musician—Ronnie as a composer, arranger, singer, guitarist, pianist, trombonist, and music pastor; Marty as a singer, high school choir director, and English teacher; Terry as a singer, music pastor, and pastor.
In addition, Ronnie was a high school track star, gymnast, swimmer, and bicyclist. One summer in high school, Ron rode his bike across the entire United States with the Wandering Wheels organization. Another summer, he participated again in a Wandering Wheels excursion, riding his bike around the Great Lakes in Michigan.
In 1969, Ronnie (now Ron) came to Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. He auditioned and was accepted into Dr. Frank Garlock’s vesper choir. This same year Ron saw Dr. Garlock’s daughter, Shelly, running across the BJU campus in her cheerleading outfit. Not long after, Shelly spotted Ron in her dad’s vesper choir. It was love at first sight for both of them. The rest is history. Ron and Shelly dated for six short years and tied the knot on May 31, 1975. They both did undergraduate and graduate work in music and have made beautiful music together ever since.
Ron’s first sacred music compositions were written for his master’s degree program under the tutelage of Dr. Dwight Gustafson. Instead of writing a capstone paper, Ron wrote a trilogy of songs on the cross: “It Is Finished,” “Come to the Cross,” and “The Blood of Jesus.” Dr. Gustafson later confided to one of our friends, “Ron’s three songs on the cross were some of the finest compositions ever written at Bob Jones University.”
In 1978, the couple’s life took a sharp turn—not of their own making but of God’s. At a routine eye exam, an ophthalmologist discovered melanoma cancer in Ron’s left eye. Surgery followed to remove the eye. Ron, being the adventure-driven, fun-loving individual that he was, opted to wear a leather eye patch permanently. This earned him the title Patch the Pirate from children everywhere. This seeming tragedy became the greatest ministry blessing of Ron and Shelly’s lives.
Following Ron’s eye surgery, he composed his most loved song, “Rejoice in the Lord,” compiled from Scripture sent to him on hundreds of cards. The song is mainly based on two passages. First is Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, rejoice.” The second is Job 23:10, “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”
Ron and Shelly Hamilton have owned and managed Majesty Music, a sacred music publishing company, since 1980. Ron has traveled across the country giving sacred music concerts, preached God’s Word at multiple conferences and church services, directed the music at The Wilds Christian Camp for 10 years, taught music at BJU and directed the BJA choir for three years, produced and written children’s audio story/adventure recordings for 40+ years, created the Patch the Pirate church choir clubs, has written and arranged 40 Christmas cantatas and church choral books, produced two hymnals, six vocal solo recordings, eight orchestra recordings, directed the music program at Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina for 21 years, and has raised five beautiful, sweet, musically-talented children who were the love of his life.
Jonathan, Tara, Alyssa, Megan, and Jason were all involved in the Hamilton’s music ministries and became proficient musicians themselves. Besides the Lord Jesus Christ whom they serve, Ron and Shelly’s five children are their crowning jewels. God has blessed, and only God. The five children have loved and served God with their talents.
Ron and Shelly’s oldest, Jonathan Campbell Hamilton, became sick with schizophrenia when he was 18 and took his life when he was 34. This tragedy has been the family’s most overwhelming grief. The tragedy did not overtake them but caused them to draw closer to God and confirmed in their hearts that God is always, only good.
During Ron’s lifetime, God gave him a 40-year window to write beautiful sacred songs for both adults and children. Writing both the text and the music is a unique gift given to very few. Ron’s melodies are simple, yet memorable. His lyrics are soul stirring, heartwarming, and easily applicable. In 1980, Ron with his father-in-law Frank Garlock wrote songs for the first Patch the Pirate album, “Sing Along with Patch.”
At the last minute, Ron added a simple story line between the songs which included himself as Patch the Pirate, his wife Shelly as Sissy Seagull, Ron as Wally Whale, Ron as Paul E. Parrot, a sailor named Davey Jones, and three oysters—Ozzie, Oozie, and Ornery. Since then, one Patch adventure has been produced each year, totaling 43 adventures to date. The adventure storylines have grown in length and complexity and always include fun characters. Ron had the gift of perfectly combining humor with character lessons. The most important goal was to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In 2010, when Ron was just 60 years old, he started showing early signs of dementia. Several years later, he was diagnosed with early onset dementia. Around 2015, Ron’s dementia was formally diagnosed as frontotemporal dementia. FTD, as it is called, affects the frontal lobes of the brain which control language and behavior. After 2017, Ron’s traveling ministry ended. The last song he wrote was “It’s All About Me” which is on the “Operation Arctic” Patch adventure album.
On July 15, 2021, Ron’s dementia took him to an assisted living facility for six months. Shelly was able to bring him home December 15 of the same year. With the help of hospice and multiple talented caregivers, Ron was able to stay at home. Ron and Shelly, with their daughter Alyssa, were invited in July of 2022, to transfer to Navarre, Florida to live with Shelly’s sister Gina and her husband David Greene. The purpose was for Shelly to have help and support in caring for Ron.
Because of his declining condition with dementia, Ron’s health took a downward turn in April of 2023. Evangelist and friend, Tom Williams, who is now 88 years old, prayed with Ron and Shelly over the phone shortly before Ron passed, “Dear Lord, this old ship is about ready to dock.”
Ron passed away quietly on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 surrounded by his family.
The Patch the Pirate albums have sold over two million copies. The adventures are featured on over 600 radio stations, Spotify, YouTube, and other digital outlets. To date, over a million streams of Patch are reported every month. To the glory of God, countless children have come to know Christ because of the Patch outreach.
Ron’s Christmas cantatas have reached thousands with the gospel of Christ. After his first cantata was presented by churches all over America, Majesty Music received reports of over 600 salvations.
Some of the most meaningful comments to his family have been, “Patch music has become the soundtrack of my life.” And, “Ron’s life has validated his music.” Friend, Evangelist Ben Everson said, “Patch taught several generations how to live for Christ. Now Patch has taught us how to die in Christ.”
About five years ago, Ron received disheartening news at his doctor appointment. As they drove away, Shelly tried to encourage him by saying, “Do you realize how many people you have blessed with your music, Ron?” Not saying much at this stage of his dementia, Ron replied, “I’d like to think God did it.”
This is Ron’s story. We’re sticking to it.
A visitation for Ron will be held Friday, April 28, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive, 311 Century Dr, Greenville, South Carolina 29607.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Bob Jones University in the Founder's Memorial Amphitorium, 1700 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC 29614 with a committal service to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, South Carolina 29609.
