It seems like we get news of BYD entering a new market around the world every week now, so it’s hard to keep up! However, it’s great for the overall mission to accelerate adoption of electric vehicles around the world. Just the other week, BYD officially entered the Zambian market in collaboration with Pilatus and launched several models there. There is more good news from BYD on the African continent, as BYD has officially launched three models in Kenya!
P.S. Good news! The hopes of big oil companies to use emerging countries as a place to continue their dirty business are being successfully dashed. Demand for oil will slow down in developing countries as well. The second novelty, the customs tariffs and barriers introduced by the USA and Europe will not be able to slow down the spread of affordable electric car technology in the world. Populist politicians forget that a fairly large car market also exists outside the US and Europe...

Jurassic Park - Robert Muldoon S/O Dialogue Writing Prompts
• "I'm not staying on an island full of dinosaurs during a tropical storm."
• "This fence is supposed to keep that in?"
• "These aren't petting zoo animals, Robert... Does Hammond understand this?"
• "The raptors should be in a sealed room. Not an open Tupperware."
• "Foe, friend, or food."
• "Do we really trust future guests to keep the windows up while they pass the dilophosaurus enclosure? We need some sort of strong, reinforced glass or something."
• "Personally, I don't trust the safety of the paddocks. No offense intended." "Please don't tell me that." "The electric wire looks like spaghetti next to the tyrannosaur."
• "Just knowing that Nedry's workstation looks like that, makes me want to pull my hair out."
• "How many pairs of those shorts do you own? Not that I'm complaining. Just curious."
• "You have some...strong opinions on the raptors, yeah?" "Yeah. Why?" "What do you think about having an extra paddock around the pen that they already have? You know, for extra security."
• "Can I wear your hat?"
• "I prefer the more docile herbivores." "It's a wonder why you're with me."
• "Should we live in one of the emergency bunkers then?"
• "I understand the need for security cameras, but why not also implement security personnel?"
• "Is ten-thousand volts enough?"
• "Got your hat?" "Yep." "I.D.?" "Of course." "Your--" "And my vest, and my boots. Darling, I have everything."
• "Which do you prefer: Kenya or Isla Nublar?" "There's no dinosaurs in Kenya, you know."
• "If the raptors are dangerous and smart... What does that make us?"
• "The sounds they make give me nightmares."
• "Robert, I love you, but please take your boots off of my desk."
• "Do you think the raptors recognize faces?"
• "A park full of dinosaurs. Who in their right mind is going to believe that enough to fly all of the way out here to drop cash on someone's word?"
• "You're being very cautious." "I didn't want to alarm you, your back was turned." "I appreciate that."
• "How on Earth did you find me over here? Wait... Did you track me down?" "You are fearsome to behold." "Your flattery won't make me dismiss my question."
• "Day one-hundred of no one installing locks on the vehicle doors." "Don't remind me, love, please."
• "If anyone can keep the visitors safe when the park opens, it's you."
• "Tomorrow's another transport day?" "Yep. I'll be heading over to Isla Sorna shortly. I have to ensure that all preparations are in-place."
• "You're back late. What happened?" "We tranquilized the raptors for transport to the island, but they woke up. One of the raptors took Jophery...I tried to save him."
• "They still want to keep the raptors? Even after everything?"
• "Maybe if we were to provide enrichment to the velociraptors?" "Enrichment?" "Yeah, you said that they're smart. They solve puzzles and...are looking for a way out--but why not give them something to do?"
• "They're lethal at what age?"
• "Robert, love, may I tell you something about a paddock without you getting upset?" "Sure. As if I could ever get cross with you." "Okay, um... I don't like walking around outside--between the buildings--and having the raptor pen so close. And there's no additional fencing around it. They frighten me."
• "Could your shorts be any shorter?" "You never complained before."
• "With legs like yours, you could jump as high as a velociraptor."
• "Can I go with you next time to Isla Sorna? I've never been there."
Bonus:
• "Well, aren't you a clever boy/girl?"

Big Oil faces a tiny foe on the streets of Asia and Africa. The noisy, noxious vehicles that run on two and three wheels, carrying billions of people daily, are quietly going electric — in turn knocking down oil demand by one million barrels a day this year. ... The global majority doesn’t roll on four wheels. In Nairobi and Hanoi, motorcycles serve as taxis. In Mumbai, scooters can carry a family of four. In China, electric bicycles are how millions commute. “Electric bikes are quieter, much more efficient and good for the environment,” said Jesse Forrester, the founder of Mazi Mobility, which has 60 electric motorcycle taxis, known as boda-bodas, on the roads in Nairobi. “There’s a quiet revolution now in Kenya driving this transformation for the future.” .... In Darbhanga, a new acid-battery rickshaw, like the one Mr. Rai drives, sells for around 175,000 rupees, or $2,100. That’s half the price of a new rickshaw powered by natural gas. Charging the battery costs 20 rupees (25 cents), one-fourth of the price of filling a gas tank. The rebates seem to be working. Reliance Industries, India’s biggest company, is converting its three-wheeled cargo vehicles from gas to electric. Food delivery services are going electric as quickly as possible.

David Zipper at Vox:
Despite a recent slowdown in US sales, global forecasts for electric vehicles remain bullish. Countries across North America, Europe, and Asia are expanding charger networks and offering EV subsidies; global EV sales are projected to nearly triple by 2030, reaching 40 million vehicles annually. The incipient wave of EV purchases raises a question: What will happen to the millions of gas-powered cars whose owners no longer want them? The likely answer: Rather than scrapping used gas vehicles or selling them domestically, rich nations will dispatch them to developing countries where limited incomes and low levels of car ownership have created eager buyers for even older, substandard models.
An influx of used gas cars would be a welcome development for those in the Global South who aspire to automobile ownership, a luxury that many in affluent countries take for granted. But it would undermine efforts to mitigate climate change, since shifting gas guzzlers from one country to another doesn’t lower global emissions. For developing countries themselves, a sharp increase in car ownership could amplify calls to build auto-reliant infrastructure, making it harder to construct the dense neighborhoods and transit networks that can foster more sustainable growth. And since these imported used cars would be fueled by gasoline, air quality would further decline in cities that are already choked with smog. The world is in an era of polycrisis, facing concurrent challenges including climate change, toxic air, and extreme inequality. Difficult trade-offs are often inevitable. Such is the case with the thorny issue of what to do with the millions of gas cars that the rich world will discard as its fleets are electrified. Electrification is a necessary goal. And it’s natural for people in the developing world to desire the same luxuries that characterize middle-class comfort in wealthier countries. The question is how to manage a transition with enormous stakes that has largely been ignored. The experts who do pay attention are growing alarmed.
[...]
How used cars move from rich nations to poor ones
Although it generates few headlines, a massive industry transports used cars across borders every day, with exporters collecting lower-quality models from dealers and wholesale auctions. Ayetor noted that colonial legacies are reflected in the trade flows: the UK, with its car cabins designed for drivers who keep to the left, tends to ship to former colonies like Kenya and Tanzania that still follow the same rules.
According to a report issued in June by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), some 3.1 million used cars were exported in 2022, up from 2.4 million in 2015. Most come from Japan, Europe, and the United States. (In the US, around 7 percent of all cars no longer in use are sent abroad. The rest end up in junkyards where their parts and materiel are sold off.) About one in three exported used vehicles is destined for Africa, followed by Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Imported models often dominate local auto sales, since international carmakers send few new vehicles to the Global South and rarely establish production facilities there. (In sub-Saharan Africa, only South Africa has local factories.) The developing world’s demand for cars is robust, in large part because comparatively few people own one. According to one 2020 estimate, the US had 860 cars for every 1,000 residents, while South Africa had 176, Morocco 112, and Nigeria just 56. Meanwhile, growing populations provide a steady supply of new potential customers. Africa is home to all of the world’s 20 fastest-growing countries, with Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger, and Uganda expanding their populations by at least 3 percent per year. (For comparison, the US population is growing at a 0.67 percent rate).
[...]
The world needs a plan to adapt
The risks of aged, polluting cars sent abroad will not be borne by the Global South alone. Climate change is a planetary phenomenon; driving a gas guzzler produces the same amount of emissions in Lusaka as it would in London or Los Angeles. Reducing greenhouse gasses requires reducing total vehicle emissions, not just shifting their location. In an ideal world, electrification would enable the rich world to scrap its most decrepit gas cars. Instead, wealthy nations are likely to ship them to poorer countries, which will be left to figure out what to do when even the most MacGyver-like mechanics cannot keep them running. “All of your worst vehicles end up here,” Ayetor said. “When we want to get rid of the vehicle, what do we do?” No wealthy nations currently screen exported vehicles to weed out those that flunk basic quality tests, Kopf said. But that may soon change. The European Union is now considering new regulations that would prohibit exporting “end of life” vehicles, requiring that cars shipped abroad obtain a certificate confirming their roadworthiness. Its adoption would be a “game-changer,” according to UNEP’s Akumu. (She and Kopf said they know of no comparable proposals under consideration in North America.)
With the increase of electric vehicles in the developed countries, used gas-fueled cars are headed to a developing country (aka the Global South) at increasing rates.

Sept 18-24, 2023. Pardamat Conservancy
At Brackenhurst breakfast I met up with the other 6 volunteers. There were three young women from UK and one man from Belgium. So along with Joanne and myself we were 7 to travel to the Pardamat conservancy where the base camp was situated.
We were loaded onto a large passenger van that held us all nicely but no room for luggage. A separate vehicle had been allocated for that. Our first stop was at a curio shop/rest area with a lookout over the vast Rift Valley, the cradle of mankind as Louis Leaky had found the earliest fossil remains of man. Conversation flowed at first as we learne about each other. After a few hours we became more quiet looking at the scenery and the villages we passed by.
Herds of cattle an shoats (sheep and goats) grazed on the road shoulders and in and between buildings. The towns were one story little open fronted stores selling everything imaginable. Quite a hodgepodge of goods, people and animals. Many of the Maasai were colorfully dressed in shukas (wraps usually in a red or blue and green plaid design tied over their shoulders and a swathe of material usually red tied around the torso and body, knee length. Miriads of multicolored beads around the necks and as bracelets and leg bands adorn them. Dangling small discs of bright metal hang from the beaded belts, catching the sunlight and reflecting the colors around them. Women were dressed in western clothes sometimes but often in Kanga cloths tied around the waist, topped by a blouse of another hue and pattern with another brightly designed Kanga cloth over their shoulders.
As we left more populated areas behind the gorgeous plains of Kenya came into view with small thorn trees and acacias and brush. Much was fenced with electric wire fences. It was always a joy to me to see the unfenced areas as I knew there the animals could pass freely.
I can see I am writing a book here so I better condense to try to give you the high lights, or you will say, “this is to long, forget it!”
We arrived at the transfer point after about 5 hours of riving. Here the camp vehicles came to pick us up and it started to rain. One of the vehicles did not keep out the rain very well so we switched to the other and stowed all the luggage in the rather leaky one. Fortunately, after a short while, the rain stopped so the luggage did not get too wet. I was in that vehicle in the front seat as the other could not fit me in. After passing through part of Naboisho conservancy we came to the gate for the Pardamat conservancy where we waited fro a fellow to come out of the nearby hut and open the gate. Soon after passing by fields and fenced areas and places were the fences had been removed, and Masai homes and bomas and seeing lots of cattle and shoats, we bumped along heading north to some hills where our camp was perched.
It is new; finished in January 2023, a space for 120 people; students of the guiding school, us volunteers, researchers, and staff. the dining room holds 120 people. It is really lovely although a lot bigger than what I was used to last year in Naboisho.

Understanding EV Cars
As the technology continues to evolve, EV cars are becoming increasingly accessible and appealing to a wider range of consumers. EVs are powered by electric motors. These motors use electricity to generate motion, eliminating the need for a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE). EVs rely on a large battery pack to store and provide electricity to the motor. These batteries are usually lithium-ion and can be charged using electrical outlets. Many EVs utilize regenerative braking systems, which capture energy during braking and store it in the battery. This technology helps improve energy efficiency. EVs can have a higher upfront purchase price due to the cost of the battery. However, this cost is often offset by lower operating expenses over time. The availability of EV models may vary by region. It's important to research and explore the options available in your area.

Market Drivers - The rising residential waste generation is expected to propel the growth of the garbage truck body market going forward. Residential waste refers to household waste, including everyday items such as food scraps, packaging, paper, and other materials disposed of by residents. The rise in residential waste is due to rising population numbers, higher living standards, and a convenience-driven disposable culture, leading to greater consumption of goods and packaging materials. Garbage truck bodies are essential for residential waste management by providing efficient means of collecting, compacting, and transporting large volumes of household waste to disposal or recycling facilities, ensuring clean and hygienic neighborhoods. For instance, in February 2024, according to the United Nations Environment Programme, a Kenya-based program responsible for coordinating responses to environmental issues within the United Nations system, the global generation of municipal solid waste is expected to increase from 2.3 billion metric tons in 2023 to 3.8 billion metric tons by 2050. Therefore, rising residential waste generation is driving the growth of the garbage collection truck market.
Market Trends - Major companies operating in the garbage truck bodies market are focusing on developing innovative product technologies, such as electric automated sideload garbage truck bodies, to enhance efficiency and improve waste collection processes. Electric automated sideload garbage truck bodies are waste collection vehicles powered by electricity with automated systems for efficiently and safely loading waste from the side. For instance, in October 2022, Heil Environmental Industries Limited, a US-based manufacturer of garbage and recycling trucks, launched the RevAMP electric automated sideload body (eASL), a fully electric refuse collection vehicle designed to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability in waste management. Featuring an electric lift arm and auger-style compactor, the RevAMP significantly reduces energy consumption, noise, and greenhouse gas emissions, potentially cutting emissions by approximately 41 metric tons per year when paired with an electric chassis. It operates on its battery, allowing compatibility with various chassis types, and can save municipalities up to 4,000 gallons of fuel annually. The RevAMP is positioned as a sustainable solution for waste haulers, combining performance and environmental responsibility, making it a compelling choice for modern refuse collection needs.
