Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
Inside a cinder block office building perhaps best known for the Hindu temple and table tennis club next door, a startup company is testing what may be one of the hottest new developments in clean energy technology.
At the back of a small warehouse laboratory buzzing with fans and motors, an MIT spinoff company called Electrified Thermal Solutions is operating something its founders call the Joule Hive, a thermal battery the size of an elevator.
The Hive is a large, insulated metal box loaded with dozens of white-hot ceramic bricks that convert electricity to heat at temperatures up to 1800 degrees Celsius—well beyond the melting point of steel—and with enough thermal mass to hold the heat for days.
As the price of renewable energy continues to plummet, one of the biggest challenges for the clean energy transition is finding a way to convert electricity to high temperature heat so societies don’t have to continue burning coal or natural gas to power heavy industries. Another thorny issue is finding a way to store energy—in this case heat—for when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow.
“If you are running an industrial plant where you’re making cement or steel or glass or ceramics or chemicals or even food or beverage products, you burn a lot of fossil fuels,” Daniel Stack, chief executive of Electrified Thermal Solutions, said. “Our mission is to decarbonize industry with electrified heat.”
The industrial sector accounts for nearly one-fourth of all direct greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., which drive climate change, according to the EPA. Thermal batteries powered by renewable energy could reduce roughly half of industry’s emissions, according to a 2023 report by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, a nonprofit, and its affiliated Renewable Thermal Collaborative.
Additional emissions come from chemical reactions, such as carbon dioxide that is formed as an unwanted byproduct during cement production, and from methane that leaks or is intentionally vented from natural gas pipes and other equipment.
The challenge to replacing fossil fuel combustion as the go to source for heat, is that there aren’t a lot of good options available to produce high temperature heat from electricity, Stack said. Electric heaters, like the wires that turn red hot in a toaster, work well at low temperatures but quickly burn out at higher temperatures. Other, less common materials like molybdenum and silicon carbide heaters can withstand higher temperatures, but are prohibitively expensive.
As a grad student at MIT, Stack wondered if firebricks, the bricks commonly used in residential fireplaces and industrial kilns, could be a less expensive, more durable solution. Bricks do not typically conduct electricity, but by slightly altering the recipe of the metal oxides used to make them, he and ETS co-founder Joey Kabel were able to create bricks that could essentially take the place of wires to conduct electricity and generate heat.
“There’s no exotic metals in here, there’s nothing that’ll burn out,” Stack said standing next to shelves lined with small samples, or “coupons,” of brick that he and his team have tested to find the ones with the best heating properties.

Solar Innovator Sphere Cost Review - Is Solar Innovator Sphere Price Worth It?
Have you heard about The Solar Innovator Sphere System created by Mark Pierce, and has it really been helping its owners produce energy-on-demand and power their homes while reducing their electricity bills at the same time? This is an energy system that can be constructed using approximately $200 worth of materials purchased from Home Depot. It is worth noting that some of the required components could potentially have been sourced from a junkyard at no cost, assuming you have more time to spare.
One of the standout features of The Solar Innovator Sphere System is its remarkable ease of assembly. Users found it to be a straightforward process, involving the proper placement of components.

Small Ovens - Would they say they are Worth the Price?
An oven is a box used for heating, baking and drying. These apparatuses can be used for baking and cooking food or for terminating earthenware. Terminating stoneware requires an exceptional type of oven called a furnace. Some sort of oven is in each household. A few ovens are greater than others. There are ovens that fit on the kitchen counter and others that an incorporated into the mass of a restaurant.
Around 3200 B. C. The principal oven was created by the Indus Valley Development. Ancient Greece created a bread baking oven that was front stacking. They are credited with creating bread baking and created many types.
There are many types of small ovens in the stores. The various ovens range from small ovens like a microwave to huge ovens like a block pizza oven. Smaller models which are easier for home use are the toaster, microwave and Dutch oven.
The toaster is small and worked to be used on a ledge. It is a barbecue and small electric oven joined. It has many uses and can do various types of cooking. It can toast and warm foods as well as barbecue pizzas, burgers, meat and fish. The toaster has many features, for example, an adjustable thermostat and programmed shut off. Toasters are made by various organizations and reach in price from twenty to one hundred bucks.
Microwave ovens cook and heat foods by use of dielectric heating. The interaction heats the water inside the food. Cooking with a microwave is extremely quick. It heats the food all through. Microwaves are roughly sixty bucks to above and beyond two or three hundred bucks. There are various options and features on microwaves. The less expensive models have fewer features yet a few deal timekeepers, timers, programmed cooking times to give some examples.
In the event that out on the reach or setting up camp, a Dutch Oven is an expected piece of hardware for cooking over an open fire. This cooking pot is three legged and has a tight fitting cover. Most of these are made from cast iron. It is rock solid and can withstand extremely hot direct heat. These ovens can do numerous things like roasting, stewing, baking, searing and steaming vegetables. A few various foods that can be cooked via Dutch Oven are soups, bread rolls, rolls, meats and even treats like apple shoemaker.
The ovens best feature is the tidy up. In the wake of being on the open fire most of the very beginning would think tidy up would be a bear. Tidy up is easy as the pot is non stick. At the point when bought a consumer fixes the cast iron by baking it with oil scoured on it. This restoring system makes the pot non stick and subsequently easy to tidy up. These Dutch Ovens are priced between twenty bucks and 75 bucks. They range in sizes from five quart to eight quarts. A Dutch Oven is a valued piece of hardware to any good cook's kitchen.

1. rice cookers are cheap as fuck mine was $10 2. "they only have one function" they don't they are frequently used to boil/steam/cook meat and vegetables 3. that's like saying people are bougie for having a toaster/electric kettles because it only does one thing 4. rice + rice cookers are racialized foods can you not see how its a bad look to say people (overwhelmingly asian) with rice cookers are fancy rich people. use ur brain.
1. Where I live [in the middle of nowhere] rice cookers are a luxury kitchen item, the cheapest one I can find is $30 and it's at a Walmart that's 30 to 45 minutes away from my home.
2&3. That's really cool & I genuinely didn't know that before, but it still takes up too much counter space for me, personally, to buy one. Electric kettles are also really fancy to me, and we have a regular kettle that works ok on its own, so I wouldn't see the need to buy it either. We have a toaster, but it's 4 or 5 years old by now, and it's barely used often enough to really keep it. But like the other 2 products we're talking about, it is probably more useful to other people who use them more.
4. Ppl with rice cookers aren't fancy rich people. They're probably cheaper in other places, but where I live, it's fancy and expensive bc the market deems them as specialty appliances. So I would rather just buy a pot to cook it in instead of smthn that had its price jacked up bc they think ppl around here don't need it.
#my personal experience not everyone in the world who owns one nor specifically asian people#where i live in a suburb/retirement community the middle of thousands of yards of corn fields. thats a fancy product#and like i was getting at w the last ask abt this. they're probably much cheaper in other places and thats great#but myself personally. i cannot afford to spend that money or use up that counter space getting a special appliance#also the “ppl with rice cookers are bougie” thing was a joke anyway. i prob should have tone tagged it bc it wasn't even slightly serious#it was only based on my personal experience with them. where they jack up the price and call it a specialty item#i wasnt like- broadcasting that to everybody in the world's lives too bc i know#its really shitty to be able to get it for $10 one place but in another its $30 bc that place doesn't think its an everyday appliance#and its bs to the people who live here that do eat rice/just use a rice cooker regularly for it to be so expensive#but im not gonna shame/make fun of anybody for buying or using one bc they probably have more uses for it than i do#*i personally* just dont have enough reason to get one for our home#and I'm not going to go back and forth abt it any more. now i know they do more than cook rice. and they're cheaper in other places#so I'm not gonna argue abt it with anybody else bc i understand those things now and i hope its understandable to you why I think#they're a specialty item bc they are marketed as such here. so i joked abt them being bougie#anon asks#thank you for the ask

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to the working week although, for those of you working in the NHS, welcome to just another day.
This has been an expensive month, first a toaster, then a kettle, and now a bloody washing machine! Those selling washing machines are sneaky bastards! They reel you in with – what looks like – a good price (and tell you it’s been discounted), and then they add on a charge for installation and removal of the old machine, another charge for ‘delivery’ and, if you want to choose a delivery time, that’s an extra charge! Obviously, ours is a family house, so we need a functioning washing machine. Will have to tighten our belts in other areas. Like most normal families, we are always robbing Peter to pay Paul. The cooker isn’t looking too healthy, that might be next? Never bloody ends!
My favourite song of 2022 is still climbing the charts. No. 5 up from No. 7 last week. 12 weeks on the chart. Last year, I said ‘People’ by Libianca was a future No.1. Hopefully, it will get there?
If you ever visit the mind-boggling Forbes website, you will see lists of the richest companies and the richest people in the world, and what they’re actually worth! In 2022, Taylor Swift made $92 million. So, there’s clearly money to be made in the music industry. Thus, those that complain that there’s no money in the music industry just don’t know where the money is and how to get their hands on it! Knowledge is power! As a teacher, I see that has my raison d’etre. As I say to my students over and over again, the making of the music is virtually the easy part of the process. Promotion and marketing is hard work, that’s why there are numerous companies offering ‘label services’. Of course, there’s good money to be made in the music industry, you just need to know how to get it. That’s where I come in!
One student said to me, “Surely, the key to making money in the music industry is to produce exceptional music?” With the creation of DAWs (digital audio workstation), any Tom, Dick or Kanye can make music. 99.9% of this output is ‘acceptable’. Very few people create music that is truly ‘exceptional’?
If you get the chance, watch the US Congress interviewing the CEO of TikTok. Most of my timeline over the weekend was people mocking and laughing at these politicians. One asked him, if he switched his phone to ‘airplane mode’, would TikTok then have control of the plane? Another asked him, when connecting to TikTok via wi-fi in his home, would TikTok then control all the other electrical devices in his house? Amazingly, these hopelessly out-of-touch old men and women have been elected to represent their communities.
Many thanks to everyone that listened to the show live, and everyone that has listened to it or will listen to it on Mixcloud. No, I have not sorted out my issue with the March 11th show. Hopefully, there will be some kind of resolution this week?
Have a marvellous and momentous Monday. I love you all.

Can't believe I had to scroll all the way down to find some common sense. If you're moving out and living on your own for the first time, and assuming you at the very least have a stove in your new house/dorm (maybe even an oven)... I for the life of me cannot understand why you would purchase a damned air fryer or rice cooker before you get a microwave to heat up leaftovers (or quickly warm up a liquid that doesn't need to be boiled, like water or milk for instant coffee or something; or quickly cook up pre made food in a possible oven mode it might have; or quickly speed up defrost if it has a defrost mode; microwaves nowadays do a lot of shit for convenience, even if they do so in a mediocre manner. But you just moved out, you're looking for utility, not luxury).
When you move out, unless you have a lot of spare money, live in a place where it's extremely common for households to have a rice cooker (so: cultural factor), or you have an extremely busy life... Just make the rice on the stove. You don't need a bulky machine for it. Just use the stove. You can get a rice cooker later if you really want it. It's not an important first time living alone purchase. Rice takes ten minutes to cook unless you're cooking for a lot of people.
Air fryer? If you have an oven, or even a toaster oven, there's no reason for you to get an air fryer off the bat. Unless you're on a very specific diet that requires the type of thing an air fryer can do (or your house has no oven), I think this is... A very unnecessary and bulky purchase for when you just moved out. No one was talking about air fryers ten years ago. Hell, five years ago. You do not need this if you have an oven. Hell, I don't have an oven yet, and I do just fine without an air fryer.
Panini press grill things are cheap, I'll give you that. But let us be real. I own one of those I brough from home while moving out and 1) Most people don't use them often because they feel lazy to clean it up; and 2) is that really an important first appliance purchase? I guess you can use it as a toaster while having the benefit of it doing more than a toaster, and it is very cheap if you get a smaller sized one, but... Again. Why are we recommending a panini press before a microwave? Or a vacuum cleaner?
Electric kettle is a good and reasonable advice. You can also get one of those cheap iron pots for the stove, or a regular kettle, but electric ones get the job done AND don't waste gas if your stove is gas fueled (electricity is cheaper than gas).
This last reblog before mine voiced my thoughts on the coffee. I'll just add you can be a lazy cheap fuck and drink instant coffee, which is weaker but only requires hot water or milk (hot, not even boiled). This is an advice for those who drink coffee once a week but feel like they need an appliance for it: you don't. There's more important things. Don't buy a coffee appliance right away if you don't actually drink coffee.
Above all else, purchase what you know you will use. Again, if you're used to using a rice cooker, make a shit load of rice to eat, or have zero time to wait by the stove, sure get a rice cooker first. I was making fun of the air fryer, but if you have no oven or genuinely eat a lot of food that can be cooked in it, sure get it first. If you just haaaatee using microwaves sure heat up everything in the stove or oven. Adapt your purchases to your needs.
If you want my advice... Get your basics before you think of expensive or even medium priced appliances. Get your cleaning supplies, your kitchen pots, your towels and kitchen rags, and then think about everything listed here. Don't waste money on any of this before you have a broom and at least one frying pan and one pot for the love of god.
Kitchen appliances I would recommend purchasing when moving out on your own:
Air fryer
One of those panini press grill things (not only can you make sandwiches but you can grill chicken and steak if you have an expensive model)
Rice cooker (not only good for rice but quinoa and any other grain, alternatively you could buy an Instapot)
Electric kettle (depends on how much tea you drink but it’s good for boiling water for cleaning and preheating water for pasta etc)
Kitchen appliances I would not recommend buying when you move out on your own:
Counter top coffee maker (you should not be drinking an entire pot of coffee on your own and it will be stale by the time you get to the bottom, plus these bitches suck to clean, Keurigs, French presses and stove top percolators where you make one or two cups at a time are more practical for a single person)
#I just woke up#didn't even get out of bed#but I was flabbergasted#if you just moved out you literally need zero of these things#if you have a pot I'd say even the kettle is not needed#you can indeed just boil water for tea on a pot#good lord. air fryer???#as a move out purchase???#am I really that poor to view that as ridiculous?

OTG vs Microwave: Which Should You Buy & Why
Among the many different kitchen appliances, two of the most popular ones are OTGs (Oven-Toaster-Grills) and microwaves. They have gained importance because of their ease of use and versatility. However, confusion arises if you don't know what an OTG or microwave does or which one is best suited for you according to your cooking needs.
What is an OTG?
OTG is the shortened form of Oven-Toaster-Grill. It can also be described as an appliance that appears as a miniature oven, toaster, and grill all compacted into one appliance. This type has some electrical coils heated up and evenly spread throughout the inner part of the oven. The best use of OTGs is in baking, grilling, and toasting. They are perfect for those who have to prepare many different foods and will take much longer times to get baked, such as cakes, breads, pizzas, and roasted vegetables.
What is a microwave?
A microwave is an appliance that uses electromagnetic waves to cook the food quickly; most prefer it for convenience, as it can reheat, defrost, and cook foods in minutes. Other common forms of microwaves include solo microwave, grill microwave, and convection microwave, which essentially combines conventional microwave functions with convection baking, thus making it versatile for many cooking needs.
What to Consider Before Buying an OTG or a Microwave?
Your Cooking Preferences
OTG - If you like baking cakes, cookies, pizzas, or roasting, then OTG is the best for you because it has good heat distribution and precise temperature control which indeed makes this appliance your bread-toaster if you are a baking enthusiast.
Microwave - If you are concerned about reheating, defrosting, and fast food, a microwave might be handy for you. Microwaves are mainly highly effective for easy and quick cooking, which would best suit busy families.
Energy Absorption
OTG - As an OTG generally takes longer hours of cooking and heating, it absorbs more energy. If you just need it to bake products, it could be very energy-inefficient, particularly when recipes require preheating.
Microwave - Microwave is said to cook faster, thus more energy efficient for smaller cooking time. Convection microwaves might consume more energy than the standard microwave but do their work even quicker than OTG.
Cooking Capacity and Space
OTG - The OTG typically has a large inner space, through which multiple bakes can be done in one go or larger dishes can be baked. Again, they take up much kitchen counter space, thus this must also be considered.
Microwave - Microwaves are often very space-efficient, saving you countertops. However, their small volume may limit you to cooking one or two objects at once depending on the size of the model you buy.
Check Brand Reputation
A good reputation can be researched before making a final decision as it indicates the kind of quality of products, durability, and customer care. For instance, Tesla is known for its high-performance kitchen appliances, bringing together performance and toughness. Therefore, Tesla is one of the few reliable brands in the case of OTGs and microwaves. By opting for well-known brands, you will invest in quality performance and also have a viable customer support system.
Types of Microwaves: Which Fits Your Needs?
Microwaves come in different varieties with each type featuring special capabilities. Here's a glance at options that you can find available -
Solo Microwave - This is the basic model and can be used to reheat, defrost, and cook easily. It is great for a small household.
Grill Microwave - It comes with a grilling feature, enabling the browning or toasting of food items such as sandwiches and kebabs.
Convection Microwave - It brings together the microwave and convection functions for baking and roasting, thereby making it versatile enough for light baking tasks along with reheating.
Price Range and Budget Considerations
When it comes to pricing, OTGs and microwaves vary based on capacity, features, and brand. Here's what you can expect -
OTG - The basic OTGs are comparably priced and offer elementary models providing the basic baking, grilling and toasting function. Advanced versions, which offer larger capacities and additional functions, are indeed pricier but will generally cost less than its high-end counterpart of convection microwaves.
Microwave - Standalone microwaves are pretty affordable; grill and convection models with more features will command a premium. Convection microwaves can get up to the price of some OTGs, depending on which features come along, such as baking and grilling.
Making the Final Decision
The selection of OTG or microwave completely depends on your cooking habit, the space available in your kitchen, and your budget. Here are the final considerations -
Select an OTG if you bake and grill often, require more control over the temperature in which you cook, or cook larger meals.
Select a Microwave if you need to cook something quite quickly, reheat, or defrost. Convection microwaves have some baking and grilling capabilities so they will work just fine for smaller tasks.
Conclusion
Both OTGs and microwaves have their respective strengths, but in the end, it all comes down to personal preference in cooking. In case one bakes frequently or likes trying roasts and grills, then an OTG would be the ultimate companion. But in case someone needs something even quicker and easier to get meals ready, the microwave, especially a convection model, would serve the purpose. Don't forget to look into the brand reputation, as choosing reliable names such as Tesla will ensure a very long-lasting, trouble-free appliance for a lifetime.
Whichever you opt for, a well-selected OTG or microwave can definitely add flexibility and convenience to your daily cooking tasks.

Regular Maintenance : Just like your car needs regular oil changes, your appliances need routine check-ups. Scheduling regular maintenance can help catch potential problems before they become serious hazards.
Proper Installation: Ensure that all appliances are installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Improper installation can lead to electrical issues, leaks, and other dangerous problems.
Unplug When Not in Use: For smaller appliances like toasters, coffee makers, and mixers, unplugging them when they’re not in use can prevent electrical fires and save energy.
Check for Recalls: Stay informed about any recalls on your appliances. Manufacturers will often recall products if they discover safety issues.
Use Appliances for Their Intended Purpose: Misusing appliances can lead to accidents. For example, never use a space heater to dry clothes or a gas oven to heat your home.
