I don’t really care what happens. If the Germans want to kill me, they can have at it. I can’t stand any of this any more. I feel horrible but I am horrible.

Split between her Anglo-Scottish parentage, Eilidh Hamilton has always had a foot in two countries, but life and the war have a way of choosing for her where she will be at any given time, whether she likes it or not. While her parents and brother aid the war effort from London, Eilidh remains relatively isolated in St Andrews as her grandmother's sole caretaker. Eilidh’s dual identity has never bothered her before, but it means that when she finds herself adrift from both of the places to which she belonged, she can't help but feel twice as unmoored.

Notes below the cut

All right, just right off the bat: Eilidh is a Scottish Gaelic name and pronounced AY-lee (though the first syllable can soften in Scottish accents so it sounds more like EH-lee/Ellie, listen here.) Was it a common name in 1920s Britain? No, but I was determined she would have a Scottish name and it’s one of my favorites.

When I was toying with the idea of this character, I initially conceived her as either English or American. My best friend thought that since I did my undergrad studies in Scotland I'd be able to write a British perspective convincingly, and then I thought, if that's the case then the character should really be Scottish, not English. And thus Eilidh was born, albeit with English blood as well to make her appearance at Thorpe Abbotts a little easier to explain. Although I'm not Scottish myself, I have a lot of fondness for the country as a result of the time I've spent there and feel like I am putting a lot of myself in Eilidh when I write about her sentiments about Scotland—and so at the risk of making her a self-insert, I had to have her be an alumna of my university, the University of St Andrews, and live in the town too. It can be seen in the top left photo, which I took from the top of St Rule’s Tower.

Substance abuse, alcoholism and addiction are very difficult to deal with, even from the relatively safe distance of a theater seat.

They can be dangerous roles to play for an actor, but they are also juicy, dramatic characters full of flaws and hitting rock bottom.

Once upon a time in film, these examinations of recovering addicts were staples of serious, Award-courting movies – things like The Lost Weekend, The Days of Wine and Roses, Leaving Las Vegas and Clean and Sober.

In recent years, this kind of film (and role) has become a bit scarcer, partially because of the discomfort of the audiences, partially because of the extreme toll the characters can take on the actors.

Therefore, all credit is due to Saoirse Ronan – who has always been a fairly fearless actress – for allowing herself to take the bumpy emotional ride of the small arthouse film The Outrun, which was adapted from an acclaimed memoir by Amy Liptrot.

Ronan plays Rona, a thirty-ish recovering alcoholic who had spent a decade partying in London and has now moved back to the area in which she grew up – the Orkney Islands off of Scotland – in an attempt to get her life back on track. (The somewhat inscrutable sounding title The Outrun actually refers to a type of outlying coastal farmland on Orkney that's not suitable for cultivation, which is where Rona ends up taking residence and reinventing herself.)

The Outrun flips back and forth in time in Rona’s life – from her troubled childhood with a bi-polar father and religious mother, to her wild party days in London, to her current desperate attempts to keep herself sober.

Needless to say, there are some very depressing parts of The Outrun. However, as Rona rediscovers her home in the stunningly beautiful, if slightly remote and rundown island, the nature and the landscape soothes the audience as well as the heroine, which is a nice cinematic trick.

By simplifying her life, her needs and her world, we can see Rona potentially getting it all together, and it is a rather cathartic feeling.

The Outrun is not the type of movie that will ever get a huge following – particularly not in this period of cinematic history – and that is kind of a shame. It is definitely a film worth seeing.

I just hope that it makes enough of a splash that Saoirse Ronan is remembered during Awards season, because this fearless tightrope performance is definitely worthy of at the very least some serious nominations.

He is kidnapped by a con artist, Beelzebub, and their two henchmen in order to start a war. Crowley, who survived his rumored attack, rescues him from the trio. Previous Celtic footballer Anthony Stokes seems to be back alongside one another with his girlfriend irrespective of admitting to a terrifying stalking campaign.

Michael Gallen, defending, explained: ‘He was doing work abroad and that may well have contributed to him staying isolated and the complainer staying on your own with a younger child which put the romance less than pressure.

FIRST EGG OF THE SEASON FOR LOCH OF THE LOWES OSPREY LASSIE…. A female osprey nicknamed Lassie has laid her first egg of the season at the Scottish Wildlife Trust's Loch of the Lowes nature reserve. The bird, known officially as LF15, and her partner LM12 bred three chicks in both 2015 and 2016 at the Dunkeld reserve. Lassie arrived back in Scotland on 23 March, six days after her mate. HMRC WORKER JAILED FOR £65,000 BENEFIT FRAUD…. An HM Revenue and Customs (IRS) worker who fraudulently claimed £65,000 in benefits has been jailed for five months. Nicola Farningham claimed she was a single mother but was living with her husband Paul at their Dundee home. A court was told the mother-of-four had been forced to sell her house to start paying back the money. Farningham, 39 admitted a charge under the Tax Credits Act committed between 15 May 2005 and 14 July 2014. Dundee Sheriff Court heard previously that she was employed as a tax credits advisor in HMRC's Dundee call centre, advising the public about child and working tax credits. Depute fiscal Eilidh Robertson told the court that an HMRC investigation was launched in 2014 following a tip-off. She said: "The investigation into the accused established that she had married Paul Farningham on 7 September 2007 and that they had four children together. "The accused and Mr Farningham had shared a joint bank account since 2004 and a joint mortgage for their property which they bought together in 2005. "When she was interviewed the accused said they had not been co-habiting at any stage despite buying a property and having four children." The court was told that a compensation order of £40,410 to be paid within six months had been agreed.

JIM CLARK MUSEUM HAS WEEKS TO REACH FUNDING TARGET…. The backers of a museum honouring one of Scotland's greatest motor sport heroes have said they need another £300,000 by 21 April. The Jim Clark Museum already has planning permission for the site in Duns in the Scottish Borders. It has £1.3m pledged towards the £1.6m required to secure the project. The latest backer of its crowdfunding appeal is former World Rally champion Louise Aitken-Walker, who lives in Duns. Scottish Borders Council has pledged £620,000 towards the museum celebrating the achievements of two-time Formula One world champion Jim Clark, with a similar sum coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Planning permission has been given, subject to the work starting in the next three years. It is hoped the development could be completed by 2018 - the 50th anniversary of Clark's death at Hockenheim in Germany, aged just 32. The driver was born in Kilmany in Fife, but raised in the Borders, and was crowned Formula One world champion in 1963 and 1965. He won a total of 25 grand prix races.

WOMAN INJURED IN LOSSIEMOUTH CHIP VAN EXPLOSION…. A woman has been injured after propane cylinders inside a fish and chip van exploded. Firefighters were called to the Mobile Codfather van in Lossiemouth, Moray. Scottish Fire and Rescue said the cylinders had exploded after a fire inside the van. The woman was treated by the ambulance service but her injuries are not thought to be serious. The fire was put out by about 20:00. A spokesperson for the Mobile Codfather posted on the business's Facebook page: "Everyone OK bit shaken. "We can't thank everyone enough for their help. Also apologise to all neighbours round about for the scare. "The van will be off the road till further notice but we will keep you all updated."

BANKER TRIED TO ROB KILWINNING ICE CREAM VAN WITH GUN…. A TSB account manager pulled a gun on an ice cream van man as he tried to rob him, then sent him a Facebook message to apologise, a court has heard. Ian Hamilton pulled out the weapon and pointed it at Neil McIntyre in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, in July 2016. Hamilton, who is from Kilwinning, said "you're getting robbed" as he tried to force Mr McIntyre, 31, to hand over his takings. The 30-year-old pled guilty to a charge of assault with intent to rob. Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard that Hamilton approached Mr McIntyre's ice cream van as it was parked in the Pennyburn area of Kilwinning at about 15:30 on 3 July last year. He asked for "20 fags" while holding his hand behind his back, then produced the weapon and said: "You're getting robbed." Mr McIntyre grabbed the ball-bearing gun and tried to take it off him, before Hamilton managed to wrestle the weapon back and escape empty-handed. The ice cream van owner - who recognised Hamilton as local but did not know his name - reported the attack to the police, who launched an investigation. Hamilton contacted Mr McIntyre the following morning via his business' Facebook page to apologise. His message read: "Alright bud. Just wanted to say soz for pointing that gun at you, it was only a toy. "It's a bit daft, I know, but I had a bevvy in me and I thought it was funny. "I know it's not, though. I've got rid of it now so it doesn't cause any problems." The court heard Hamilton had taken the weapon from his friend on the morning of the attack. Mr McIntyre informed the officers investigating the attempted robbery about the message and Hamilton was arrested. Defence solicitor Fraser Alexander reserved his plea in mitigation until the next hearing and Sheriff Simon Pender called for background reports ahead of sentencing next month.
