And the reason this makes me flail is because the reason this comes up is precisely because Aziz’s breeding (she is no proper partner to me!) is fighting with the fact that he’s drawn to her like mad and he gets so mad at himself for fancying her and takes it out on her and does it make him awesome? No, but it’s so realistic.
Exactly, and it's so delicious to watch his inner fight, even while he is still obviously pining for Dilruba (because come on, there is an entire history there, one he cannot forget that easily).
And I personally love that Efnan didn't initially want to come specifically because she knew he didn't want her there, and relented only because she wanted to help Mustafa and pass his gift to Mahsude. She's so selfless I want to cry.
Even within its vvv patriotic narrative, it allows the main French dude, the one putting spokes into Aziz’s wheels, humanity. He is genuinely kind to Efnan at the party, for example, showing her how to eat a cake when nobody notices to save her embarrassment.
Ditto.
No fan of The Ditcher but her 1930s look is amazing and her marcelled hair is beyond compare.
She's single-handedly responsible for my current desire to style my hair like that in spite of the fact that irl I have bangs that need an urgent cut.
One of the things I really love (not in the sense of it making him an awesome person but in terms of making him a complex character), is how innately, unreflexively classist Aziz is. Sure, he talks about how there is no difference between him and his workers except the respective amount of wealth but despite treating his workers better than any other employer we see (for one, he pays a fair wage) and not viewing them as subhuman, he is an aristocrat to the marrow of his bones - he will treat a peasant or a laborer fairly, he will be polite, he will not take advantage of a peasant woman (and in fact, he rescues Efnan over and over and never regrets it, even when rescuing a village woman he didn’t know led to exile, loss of wealth and his childhood love) but it would no more occur to him to make one part of his family than it would to fly.
That is why he views the concept of marrying Efnan as such a patent impossibility, that is why he is blunt about refusing to bring her to his cousin’s birthday party (and in fact, views the invitation as absurd and her agreeing to come as a personal affront), that is why he watches her scarf her food with the same !!! the rest of the family does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way he talks to her and the way he is blunt with her is very far from the way he is with Dilruba, even when he’s angry at her because any anger in his conversation with The Ditcher revolves around her dumping him but so many of his angry conversations with Efnan revolve around their difference in status.
Like the scene their hands touch and he then starts walking brusquely and carping at her for walking slowly and then saying she was a disgrace at the party, shouldn’t have come, should change out of the dress because it does not become her etc etc. Because he wants her and he cannot cope with that, it’s against his whole world view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it’s this delicious constant pull in him - because all their lovely, tender moments come when he is off guard and forgets to think what is proper:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a contrast to the barking when he remembers. And, even better, we also have the moments where he knows it’s not her fault and he’s being irrational and tries to apologizes but cannot at the last moment because the internal fight is literally happening RIGHT THERE - tenderness and panic mixed.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the other thing is, Efnan tends to take it because she owes him her life over and over and over and over and because she has an epic crush, but in her quiet way, she is more stubborn than he is and is also beginning to show temper and this is going to be so delicious when his bear with a sore head moment will finally hit her in her most intractable mood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PS I do love the complexity in the show’s characters. Even within its vvv patriotic narrative, it allows the main French dude, the one putting spokes into Aziz’s wheels, humanity. He is genuinely kind to Efnan at the party, for example, showing her how to eat a cake when nobody notices to save her embarrassment.

PPS No fan of The Ditcher but her 1930s look is amazing and her marcelled hair is beyond compare.

@dangermousie I'm freaking out so badly because at the end of episode 7, Aziz was so sure that Efnan had stopped believing in him, and said so out loud, and also said that he needed a miracle, and then the princess appeared at his workshop as per Efnan's wish!!!!!
And the story of the bird and the rose and the flashbacks with the two of them and the fact that it's clearly spelled out that it's not only him that is the saviour - she also is!!!!!!!

Ama onu oyalayarak Zehra’nın kaçmasını sağlar. Zehra, oradan uzaklaşıp kaçar ve Adem onu görüp gazeteci heyetinin gideceği güzergaha bırakır. Aziz, Piere’in elinden kurtulmayı başarır. Aziz, tam asılacakken Galip, heyetle gelip Hayat’ın bağımsız bir vilayet olduğunu halka duyurur. Piere’in de görevden alındığını söyler. Ama Piere, Fransua’ya Aziz’in infazını gerçekleştirmesini ister. O ise silahını Piere’e doğrultup onu tutuklar. Aziz, serbest kalıp Efnan’la birlikte Türk bayrağını göndere çeker. Ahali hep bir ağızdan istiklal marşını okur. Read the full article

Nothing to add to this excellent analysis, except I do kinda judge Dilruba a bit for telling Efnan that Aziz's favourite colour is red, and then appearing at the engagement party in a red dress. It came off so petty, and for what?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nobody can convince me the show didn’t know EXACTLY what it was doing by having Aziz feed Efnan by hand, putting his fingers into her mouth as she opens it.
Ummmm
But on a less salacious note, I do adore that he noticed she missed her meal.
The thing that I love is that this is a very shippy scene but even in the midst of their blissed out bliss we see some of little issues that become an avalanche by the end of the ep - she is gorgeously dressed by his aunt but that dress is not great for weaving and in general she’s finding it tight and uncomfortable - her finding the fancy beautiful clothes constraining and her hair up uncomfortable is a running theme through this episode - her fairytale crown has thorns in it.
And the thing, there is zero Aziz’s fault in it - he clearly doesn’t care what she wears, he lets her choose to be a weaver after a marriage or not, he prefers her hair down, he makes it explicit that if what others want makes her unhappy, she shouldn’t do it even if that other is him. He tries to put them on equal footing over and over, for example in this lovely scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the thing is, she still won’t tell him she is not happy with dresses etc - he asks her point blank in the feeding scene if the dress is too tight and she lies - just as she won’t say she’s not happy the engagement party thrown by his aunt is a fancy event with society people and none of her factory friends. Because everything in society has told her that his class is superior and his class’ clothes are superior etc etc - so it does not occur to her to say to him she prefers her clothes and her friends; but also because she realizes (correctly) that this is a huge messaliance, an aristocrat from the most influential family in town marrying a village weaver daughter of a beggar.
And she loves him and does not want him to be ashamed of her. And he’s perceptive but he can’t read her mind if she lies and he really IS upper class and this is his default. She insisted to Pierre early on that Aziz loves her the way she is in terms of behavior but even there she thought changing her look was required and events of this ep defeated even that - when she tells Pierre at the end she wants him to teach her how to be a lady, that is a defeat for her and that is not even anything current (as compared to former, “who is she even?”) Aziz wants but it makes so much sense. I love that fairytale is not easy. Cinderella is all great but Cinderella was an aristocrat before her evil stepmom and her prince a personalityless perfection. How would it work to live in a palace if Cinderella only knew cleaning and kitchens and the prince had a metric ton of baggage?
Tumblr media
Because that is the thing - Aziz loves Efnan truly but he is also looking into his father’s death which is emotionally draining and there is Dilruba. He does not love her any longer but she is a huge part of his past and it attacks all Efnan’s insecurities - like when Dilruba tells her of Aziz’s various likes and how red is his favorite color blah blah. To his credit, he tries to protect Efnan and make it very clear to D to stop messing around…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But even if he is no longer in love, she is always around and every single insecurity Efnan has starts ringing - Dilruba is gorgeous and a lady and Aziz’s first love and hell she saw them banging! And then the scene where Aziz sends a beautiful red dress to Efnan for their engagement party (because red is his favorite color) and she’s so pleased and he says she is beautiful and all so sweet
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but she then sees D come in also in red. And I don’t even hate D, because she’s only human and it would be too saintly not to try to at least make Aziz think of what he’s missing but poor Efnan!
Tumblr media
Not to mention she’s already nervous because in addition to her being a fish out of water, Aziz is late to the engagement party, because he just got a bunch of new info about his father’s death.
Tumblr media
To Aziz’s credit, as spun up as he is (and he’s spiraling), he can still demand the right thing from D when she shows up in his dressing room, and automatically know what is right and wrong and try to do right by Efnan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then D brings out info about his uncle being there the night his father died and yeah - I genuinely don’t think she tries to ruin the engagement consciously, but it’s not really real in her eyes and all she wants is to show Aziz she still cares and she doesn’t think about fallout at all. And Efnan comes in and is understandably wtf about her fiance alone in a room with his ex and Aziz is too fucked up from all this to even reassure her properly though even a minute ago he was so conscious of her possible concerns and tailored his actions accordingly. And then he gets a note from an important witness who says it’s the last chance to meet him before he leaves and his brain shortcircuits and he stops thinking of anything but that and rushes out to meet the man even as Efnan pleads - because he’s so consumed and messed up by all of this he can’t even think how it would look and make her feel to have the fiance walk out on the engagement party.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And i honestly get it, I get both of them - he actually kept it together for longer than I thought and he didn’t peace out to enjoy himself but to ultimately attempt to murder his uncle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that is the problem - it’s understandable but it was horrible for Efnan and is yet another consequence of being with someone with baggage. And of course, her supposed happy day turned into horror is not over yet. The day where her fiance who arrived late walked out on the engagement party seemingly on the words of his ex (he didn’t even explain to E, he was in such a rush) leaving her among haughty strangers looking down on her, is about to get way way worse, when her horrifying father crashes the party, insulting her and demanding money.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she walks out of the house, distraught, and asks Pierre to turn her into a lady, as I mentioned…
Tumblr media
But you know what hit me so hard? This was one of her worst moments and Aziz was not there to protect her. He’s protected her constantly since he came into her life (to be fair she protected him just as hard), but here, in a moment she needed protection so hugely and when he should have been the most at her side, he was not there, chasing the past instead of caring for his future. And it makes sense, it makes sense, but I hope that she won’t just be heartbroken, I hope she will be angry for his failing her - he did not when they were strangers and now they are engaged and he’s nowhere - I don’t want her to just be “if only I were worthier,” I want her to lose it at him. The show realizes transforming into a lady is not a solution and would make her miserable for no reason (Aziz walked out because of murder investigation, she could have been a princess and he still would have) - she does not need to change, she needs confidence in who she is - but I also want him to realize he fucked up.
I do so love that class differences and the fact that he’s older and so with a bunch of baggage don’t magically go away!

So this is what I have been working on for the past two months:
By request of my dear bestie @payidaresque <3 (It's the first time I write for a friend as opposed to writing for a general audience and it was pretty amazing!)
Here's a snippet of the story:
A late summer wind swept across the yellow flower fields that spread around Edip Payidar's estate. It carried the smell of distant rain and a soft chill, heralding the arrival of the colder seasons.
Efnan thought that she would soon have to retrieve the blankets from their summer storage.
For now, though, the weather was bearable enough for her to feel comfortable in her cerulean dress with its short frilled sleeves and white ribbon belt, as she lay among reminiscences of her mother, her hands behind her back, head turned towards the dipping sun.
Or, at least, as comfortable as she could get.
She lowered her gaze, a furrow shaping between her brows.
She needed her. Now, more than ever. That's what you always say, Efnan, a voice in her argued. And indeed, in all her life, there hadn't been a time that she hadn't craved her mother's presence less than vigorously. But still, it was different now.
Slowly, with a gentleness she had only recently discovered in herself—only since a few days ago, in fact—she shifted her weight onto one hand, and brought the other to her stomach.
Almost immediately, her face lit with a smile.
"Look at all these flowers, huh? The poor things, they'll only have less than nine months to enjoy their beauty, because afterwards, they will have you to compete with. Little unfair, isn't it? Since you've already won?"
Her smile grew wider, her fingers smoothing the folds across the material of her gown, as she rubbed her belly.
"Efnan, kuzum —"
The voice came abruptly behind her. Her hand flew away from her stomach at once, but it was too late.
Azime gasped, and then she shrieked . Before Efnan could do anything to reverse the moment, the housekeeper was running to her, kneeling on the ground beside her, taking her hand in hers, and crying .
"Aye, my Efnan, what happiness you've brought me! You're going to make old Azime a grandmother so young! Aye, kuzum …"
"Shh, Azime, keep quiet!" Efnan hissed amidst the older woman's rambling, her eyes moving frantically towards the enormous estate behind her.
Aziz could be back any minute.
Azime kept on her stream of joyous exclamations, until Efnan anxiously placed her palm on the other woman's mouth. She held her friend's gaze pleadingly.
"Please, Azime, I haven't told Aziz yet."
After a moment, the older woman drew back from her hand, a chastised expression on her face.
"Ah," she said in a loud whisper, also glancing towards the house. "Forgive me, my Efnan," she said, then smacked her own hand. "Oh, silly old Azime almost ruined the surprise her ladyship prepared for Mr. Aziz!" A smile glowed on her face. "Oh, he's going to go insane, Efnan!"
Efnan's gaze moved downwards, unable to hide the guilt that shaped there. The other woman slowly fell quiet, her brows knitting in concern, as realization sank in.
"You're not planning to tell him, are you?" The judgment in her voice was not at all subtle.

Efnan is killing me. But also, Aziz had no chance - she is gorgeous, she thinks he’s smart and capable and his goals are awesome but is also willing to fight him when she’s mad and disagrees and she looks at him as if he’s the whole world whenever he does something nice. Who can resist? Certainly not the man who’s been abandoned and betrayed by everyone who was supposed to love him in his life so far. (Some unwillingly - daddy being offed for example, but the fact remains.)
She’s got a stalker now ahahah
Her freaking out is so cute and so understandable at the same time. Them spending the night together like that is an obvious development - but I do love that, rather than building up hope, she's now directly asking for an explanation.
My fave being her telling the Frenchman “he’s sorry he knows he is wrong” and him going “I am not sorry and I’d do it again” ahahaah
ICONIC.
Aziz: “You are driving me insane!”
Efnan: “You are insane anyway!”
I love them so much!
Rambel war flashbacks.

He comes to, and starts calling for Efnan nonstop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Efnan is currently stumbling home with bloody hands...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was hoping it’s because she killed viagra grandpa but alas...She did try.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her hands got cut when Pierre was trying to wrestle the letter opener from her.
Tumblr media
Ugh, so creepy so creeeeepy omg
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No you can’t. RTUK will come for you :P (Also, no way no how in a 2022 romance heavy period show would they let the FL lose her virginity to a creepy foreign rapist instead of her hot AF loving husband.)
Tumblr media
Said so. But honestly, I think he stopped because he knew he’d end up with a literal corpse otherwise but also because like with ep 17?18? when Aziz almost killed him and they had to come with Ataturk deus ex machina because it would have derailed their story to kill him and they couldn’t figure out a more organic way to write themselves out of it, they wrote themselves into a bit of a corner - you can’t have your beautiful virginal heroine in your romantic patriotic fable raped by the bad guy shortly after her marriage to her true love more than halfway through your run. You just can’t. I mean, there are Turkish shows that have rape of mains - the whole premise of Fatmagul is heroine getting justice for gang rape she suffered in ep 1. Heroine of SAK clearly suffered from marital rape from her husband escape from whom is the whole start of the show. Hell, Murat’s character in Suskunlar got raped in jail. But those are all vastly different shows with vastly different vibes and set-ups. There is just no way here. Luckily Pierre is so unhinged I can buy this. Well that, or his shipment of viagra didn’t arrive in time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Creepy creepier creepiest. Also hate to tell you if I had a husband as hot as hers, I would not be thinking of anything but that hotness whenever I was looking at him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His “madam” is so goddamn creepy.
Tumblr media
She runs for it and he slams the door right before she gets out. Ugh ugh ugh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ugh wtffff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AAAA whut whut whut whut psycho!!!
The “best” part is she leaves and he adds with a smirk something “but we now both know you are capable of cheating on Aziz Payidar” and like words have meanings, delusion master - if you blackmail someone into sex by holding the life of their husband hostage that isn’t cheating!

The union was delicious but all I can think of is “every bit of angst you are gonna go through from now on, Aziz Payidar, you brought on yourself because you didn’t murder Pierre.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I guess I am glad he didn’t murder the scumbag because it means he kept his every promise but still TROUBLE TROUBLE TROUBLE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, things just got really baaaaaad. But I do love that he hides nothing from her (something she should have imitated but about that later.) Also it’s her hope asking - how would Pierre not know?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No, but things are still gonna go sideways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once again, yes but he can fuck with you anyway. If you started a murder, should have carried it out, Ataturk or not.
Tumblr media
Exactly.
Tumblr media
The running theme for this ep is that Efnan keeps begging to run away and Aziz refuses. Running away by herself is not Efnan’s n1 choice - she does it to protect Aziz, because she worries Pierre will be able to get info about who the killer of his son is from/because of her. She’d have rather ran with him. To be fair to Aziz, he may have decided differently if he knew all the facts - ie Pierre continuing to threaten her. I really wish she’d laid her cards on the table - until now she’s been very honest with him overall, and this is a big break from that (even the Pierre visit isn’t as huge as this.) But as much as it drives me bonkers, I get why she clams up - last time she told Aziz about Pierre’s threats, he almost killed the man, destroying his whole life utterly and about starting an international incident to boot. I can see why she feels she cannot risk telling him - his life is paramount to her and he knows he will snap like hell and it will be utter disastr.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good luck! She’s terrified for YOU and your insanely reckless self.
Tumblr media
Oh, sweetheart!!!!

Aziz keeps waiting and waiting but she’s not there so he starts freaking out and is off to search.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile yup, it’s Kenan who kidnapped Efnan as part of his plan to end Aziz (long story.) I have to say, it’s so interesting how the writers post-OG writer chose to go mirror flip on Galip, Adem and Kenan. They are trying to redeem the former two (with little success imo; I still have no idea how Galip became someone Ankara would back and Aziz would recommend to Ankara - dude is a backstabber who served the French, stole all of Aziz’s stuff and not a great candidate for elections seeing his workers hated him. Adem is somewhat more believable since not even new writers are saying he’d make an OK husband; I suppose when D is gone he can calm down a bit but it still seems unlikely all his obsession with owning D or inferiority towards Aziz has disappeared; when Aziz told him he may make a decent father - ummm, I am beginning to think Aziz was hit on the head) but clearly OG writer was setting up stuff to make Kenan a little better (he was beginning to develop a soft spot for Maksoudeh and open up about his childhood) but new writers are like No! he evil! I don’t really care for the rest of the Payidars except the awesome aunt for it’s not a big deal for me as long as they write Aziz and Efnan well (and they do) but it’s weird.
Anyway, Kenan tells Efnan about being half siblings with Aziz and rants about how he hates Aziz because he was treated as a prince while he Kenan was ignored and Efnan with a lot of common sense points out that none of this is Aziz’s fault (the man doesn’t even know he has a brother) but Edip’s so his grudge is dumb. Too bad Kenan ain’t listening (as the always fabulous Pierre points out “it’s better to have a smart enemy than an idiot friend. M. Kenan is an idiot.”)

Aziz going nuts looking for Efnan and barging into Pierre’s house is delish!

Honestly, his falling apart over Efnan is so good!

Anyway he locates where she is and goes there but so does Pierre, because Pierre is all about murdering Aziz but nobody can harm Efnan (well, seeing what Pierre did and tried to do, perhaps let’s modify it as “nobody but Pierre can harm Efnan”) and he is all I get to rescue her ooh-la-la!

Too bad this was ultimately ruined by Egg Man omeletteing around.
They are slowly making Efnan and Dilruba friends and I am beside myself!
The shows never do that!
Dilruba finds out about Efnan asking Pierre for etiquette lessons and she knows Aziz would hit the roof and instead of exposing it, or even just standing back and doing nothing so it gets exposed on its own, she helps Efnan cover it up!
