Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.

A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.

What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.

It’s Ozploitation time again for the Grue Crew! This go-around, the Crew discusses Richard Franklin’s Roadgames (1981) starring Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis as the pair trek across Southern Australia’s Nullarbor Plain hauling pig carcasses from Melbourne to Perth. Conceived as Hitchcock’s Rear Window (1954) as seen from a tractor-trailer, Roadgames features encounters along the road with a cast of recurring travelers and a serial killer. Keach’s and Curtis’ chemistry is apparent in their engaging performances. Though not straight horror, Roadgames is horror-adjacent while generating its share of suspense amid horrific events.

At the time of this writing, Roadgames is available to stream from Amazon Prime, Peacock, Tubi, PlutoTV, and multiple PPV sources. The movie is available on physical media as a standard Blu-ray disc from Shout! Factory.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Evilspeak (1981), one of the video nasties, featuring Clint Howard as an outcast military cadet, R.G. In Memoriam: Actrices y actores que han fallecido en 2017

Como es tradición, antes de echar el cierre a todo lo que ha dado este año (y dar carpetazo a nuestro humilde repaso), toca despedirse de todos esos intérpretes televisivos que nos han dejado en 2017. No tenemos a Celine Dion cantando para acompañar, pero este es nuestro particular homenaje a todos ellos.

Bill Paxton (17 de mayo de 1955 - 25 de febrero de 2017)

El actor estadounidense, fallecido a causa de un infarto después de someterse a una operación de corazón, era una de las caras más amables del star system de Hollywood. En cine le recordaremos por Twister, Titanic o Apolo 13. En televisión, por dos series que le dieron muchas alegrías: Big Love (2006-2011), por la que fue nominado a tres Globos de Oro, y Hatfields & McCoys (2012), por la que consiguió nominaciones a los SAG y los Emmy. Quizás Paxton nunca fue una estrella de primera división, pero siempre agradeceremos su presencia en papeles secundarios.

Harry Dean Stanton (14 de julio de 1926 - 15 de septiembre de 2017)

Con una extensísima carrera tanto en cine como en televisión, el intérprete americano podría encajar perfectamente en esos actores que te suenan de todas partes pero a los que no pones nombre. En la gran pantalla destacó en Alien, Paris, Texas, The Green Mile o en Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with me. En televisión en Big Love (2006-2010), junto a Bill Paxton, o este mismo año en Twin Peaks, a las órdenes nuevamente de su gran amigo David Lynch.

Nelsan Ellis (30 de noviembre de 1977 - 8 de julio de 2017)

Un fallo multiorgánico, resultado de un corto periodo de abstinencia del alcohol, se llevaba al actor con tan sólo 39 años de edad. Será recordado por interpretar a Lafayette Reynolds en True Blood (2008-2014), la serie de Alan Ball que le valió un Satellite Award al mejor actor secundario, además de servir para dar visibilidad al colectivo LGTB. En los últimos tiempos, su papel más relevante en televisión fue el de Shimwell Johnson, ex-convicto reconvertido en pupilo de Sherlock Holmes y Joan Watson en Elementary.

Miguel Ferrer (7 de febrero de 1955 - 19 de enero de 2017)

Víctima de un cáncer de garganta con 61 años, el actor californiano era una cara habitual de la pequeña pantalla, además de hijo del ganador del Oscar José Ferrer y primo de George Clooney. Entre sus créditos en televisión destacó en la Twin Peaks original (1990-1991), Crossing Jordan (2001-2007) y NCIS: Los Angeles (2012-2017). Este año retomó su papel del agente del FBI Albert Rosenfeld en Twin Peaks, aunque la serie se estrenó después de su fallecimiento.

John Heard (7 de marzo de 1946 - 21 de julio de 2017)

Prolífico actor tanto en televisión como en cine, a la gran mayoría os sonará por interpretar al padre de Macauly Culkin en Home Alone y Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. En la pequeña pantalla interpretó al detective Vin Makazian en The Sopranos (nominación al Emmy al mejor actor invitado), al padre de Calleigh Duquesne en CSI: Miami o al Gobernador de Illinois Frank Tancredi en Prison Break. Sus apariciones episódicas se cuentan por decenas: Law & Order, Numb3rs, Entourage, The Chicago Code, Person of Interest o McGyver, entre otras.

Terele Pávez (29 de julio de 1939 - 11 de agosto de 2017)

Un derrame cerebral nos arrebataba este año a una de las actrices con más personalidad del panorama artístico español. En el cine, Mario Camus le dio quizás el mejor papel de su carrera en Los santos inocentes (1984), aunque fue Álex de la Iglesia el que la hizo conocida para el gran público con papeles memorables en La comunidad (2000), Balada triste de trompeta (2010), y sobre todo, Las brujas de Zugarramurdi (2013, Goya a la mejor actriz de reparto). En televisión su papel más destacado es el de Purificación Barbadillo en Cuéntame. Durante 25 episodios interpretó a la madre de Antonio Alcántara, aunando ternura y dureza con experta maestría.

Santiago Meléndez (25 de julio de 1958 - 5 de julio de 2017)

Tras perder una larga batalla contra el cáncer, el actor español fallecía dejando un extenso legado de papeles secundarios en ficciones televisivas. Participó en Motivos personales, Génesis: En la mente del asesino, Sin tetas no hay paraíso, Física o química, Olmos y Robles, Águila Roja, o más recientemente, en la que es considera una de las mejores series españolas de la historia, El Ministerio del Tiempo.

Michael Parks (24 de abril de 1940 - 9 de mayo de 2017)

Conocido principalmente por su labor en el cine, el nombre de Parks irá siempre asociado a un trío de directores: Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill 1 y 2), Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse) y Kevin Smith (Red State). En televisión, su papel más destacado es el de Jean Renault en Twin Peaks (1990-1991), aunque tuvo apariciones esporádicas en episodios de Walker, Texas Ranger, The Equalizer, Perry Mason o Alfred Hithcock Presents. En 1969 protagonizó su propia serie, Then Came Bronson, aunque ésta sólo duró una temporada en antena.

Martin Landau (20 de junio de 1928 - 15 de julio de 2017)

Uno de los mejores amigos de James Dean y compañero de clase de Steve McQueen, Landau nos dejaba a los 89 años después de una fructífera carrera en cine y televisión. Estuvo nominado en tres ocasiones al Oscar, y finalmente se hizo con el premio al mejor actor secundario por Ed Wood (1994). En televisión formó parte del reparto original de Mission Impossible (1966-1969), por el que ganó un Globo de Oro, además de aparecer en Without a Trace (2004-2009) durante 5 episodios (nominación al Emmy a actor invitado) o en Entourage (2006-2008), por la que fue nuevamente nominado al Emmy como actor invitado, esta vez en la categoría de comedia.

John Hurt (22 de enero de 1940 - 25 de junio de 2017)

Considerado por muchos como uno de los mejores actores de la historia, el actor británico perdió su batalla contra un cáncer pancreático este año. En cine, muchos papeles memorables, en películas como Midnight Express (1978), The Elephant Man (1980), Alien (1979), o Harry Potter (como Mr. Olivander). En televisión prestó su voz a infinidad de documentales y series, siendo la más importante Merlin (2008-2012). Como actor participó, entre otras muchas, en An English Man in New York (2009) o Doctor Who (2013). Como dato curioso, grabó el piloto de The Strain en el papel de Abraham Setrakian, pero los productores decidieron darle el papel finalmente a David Bradley.

Como todos los años, no son pocas las caras conocidas que se van para siempre fuera del ámbito de la interpretación. En el mundo de la música hemos perdido este año a leyendas de la talla de Johnny Hallyday, Tom Petty, Chuck Berry, Chester Bennington, Malcom Young, Charles Bradley o Chuck Mosley. 

En el ámbito cinematográfico, se nos han ido Jonathan Demme, director de clásicos como The Silence of the Lambs o Philadelphia; George A. Romero, director y pionero del género de zombies, que llevó a su máximo esplendor con The Night of the Living Dead; o Tobe Hooper, que hizo una de las películas más importantes del género slasher: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Por último, no podemos cerrar este homenaje sin acordarnos también de los motociclistas Ángel Nieto y Nicky Hayden, la modelo Bimba Bosé, el diseñador David Delfín, el boxeador Jake Lamotta o el fundador de la casa Playboy, Hugh Heffner.

Chatham County was established in 1771 from Orange County, having been named for William Pitt in 1759, the first Earl of Chatham. It was Pitt who served as the British Prime Minister from 1766 to 1768 and opposed harsh colonial policies. The earliest known settlers were Quakers from England who settled along the Haw and Eno rivers. In 1907, parts of Chatham County and Moore County were combined to form Lee County. The county seat is in Pittsboro, North Carolina and Chatham County is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill area.Among the first settlers were the families of Armistead, Alston, Dodd, Kemp, Edwards, Womack, His résumé includes ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ‘Tucker: The Man and His Dream’ and ‘North by Northwest.’ It does not, however, include ‘Star Trek.’

Martin Landau, the all-purpose actor who showcased his versatility as a master of disguise on the Mission: Impossible TV series and as a broken-down Bela Lugosi in his Oscar-winning performance in Ed Wood, has died. He was 89. 

Landau, who shot to fame by playing a homosexual henchman in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 classic North by Northwest, died Saturday of “unexpected complications” after a brief stay at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

After he quit CBS’ Mission: Impossible after three seasons in 1969 because of a contract dispute, Landau’s career was on the rocks until he was picked by Francis Ford Coppola to play Abe Karatz, the business partner of visionary automaker Preston Tucker (Jeff Bridges), in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988).

Landau received a best supporting actor nomination for that performance, then backed it up the following year with another nom for starring as Judah Rosenthal, an ophthalmologist who has his mistress (Angelica Huston) killed, in Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989).

Landau lost out on Oscar night to Kevin Kline and Denzel Washington, respectively, in those years but finally prevailed for his larger-than-life portrayal of horror-movie legend Lugosi in the biopic Ed Wood (1994), directed by Tim Burton.

Landau also starred as Commander John Koenig on the 1970s science-fiction series Space: 1999 opposite his Mission: Impossible co-star Barbara Bain, his wife from 1957 until their divorce in 1993.

A former newspaper cartoonist, Landau turned down the role of Mr. Spock on the NBC series Star Trek, which went to Leonard Nimoy (who later effectively replaced Landau on Mission: Impossible after Trek was canceled).

Landau also was an admired acting teacher who taught the craft to the likes of Jack Nicholson. And in the 1950s, he was best friends with James Dean and, for several months, the boyfriend of Marilyn Monroe. “She could be wonderful, but she was incredibly insecure, to the point she could drive you crazy,” he told The New York Times in 1988.

Landau was born in Brooklyn on June 20, 1928. At age 17, he landed a job as a cartoonist for the New York Daily News, but he turned down a promotion and quit five years later to pursue acting.

“It was an impulsive move on my part to do that,” Landau told The Jewish Journal in 2013. “To become an actor was a dream I must’ve had so deeply and so strongly because I left a lucrative, well-paying job that I could do well to become an unemployed actor. It’s crazy if you think about it. To this day, I can still hear my mother’s voice saying, ‘You did what?!’ ” 

In 1955, he auditioned for Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio (choosing a scene from Clifford Odets’ Clash by Night against the advice of friends), and he and Steve McQueen were the only new students accepted that year out of the 2,000-plus aspirants who had applied.

With his dark hair and penetrating blue eyes, Landau found success on New York stages in Goat Song, Stalag 17 and First Love. Hitchcock caught his performance on opening night opposite Edward G. Robinson in a road production of Middle of the Night, the first Broadway play written by Paddy Chayefsky, and cast him as the killer Leonard in North by Northwest.

In Middle of the Night, “I played a very macho guy, 180 degrees from Leonard, who I chose to play as a homosexual — very subtly — because he wanted to get rid of Eva Marie Saint with such a vengeance,” he recalled in a 2012 interview.

As the ally of James Mason and nemesis of Saint and Cary Grant, Landau plummets to his death off Mount Rushmore in the movie’s climactic scene. With his slick, sinister gleam and calculating demeanor, he attracted the notice of producers and directors.

He went on to perform for such top directors as Joseph L. Mankiewicz in Cleopatra (1963) — though he said most of his best work on that film was sent to the cutting-room floor — George Stevens in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), John Sturges in The Hallelujah Trail (1965) and Henry Hathaway in Nevada Smith (1966).

Landau met Bruce Geller, the eventual creator of Mission: Impossible, when he invited the writer to an acting class. Bain was in the class as well, and Geller wrote for them the parts of spies Rollin Hand and Cinnamon Carter. Landau earned an Emmy nomination for each of his three seasons on the series.

He could have starred in another series.

“I turned down Star Trek. It would’ve been torturous,” he said during a 2011 edition of the PBS documentary series Pioneers of Television. “I would’ve probably died playing that role. I mean, even the thought of it now upsets me. It was the antithesis of why I became an actor. I mean, to play a character that Lenny (Nimoy) was better suited for, frankly, a guy who speaks in a monotone who never gets excited, never has any guilt, never has any fear or was affected on a visceral level. Who wants to do that?”

Landau found a kindred spirit in Burton, who also cast him in Sleepy Hollow (1999) and as the voice of a Vincent Price-like science teacher in the horror-movie homage, Frankenweenie (2012).

“Tim and I don’t finish a sentence,” Landau told the Los Angeles Times in 2012. “There’s something oddly kinesthetic about it. We kind of understand each other.”

Landau played puppet master Geppetto in a pair of Pinocchio films and appeared in other films including Pork Chop Hill (1959), City Hall (1996), The X-Files: Fight the Future (1998), Rounders (1998), Edtv (1999), The Majestic (2001), Lovely, Still (2008) and Mysteria (2011).

On television, he starred in the Twilight Zone episodes “Mr. Denton on Doomsday” and “The Jeopardy Room,” played the title role in the 1999 Showtime telefilm Bonnano: A Godfather’s Story and could be found on The Untouchables, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Maverick, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Wagon Train, I Spy and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

More recently, Landau earned Emmy noms for playing the father of Anthony LaPaglia’s character on CBS’ Without a Trace and guest-starring as an out-of-touch movie producer on HBO’s Entourage. He portrayed billionaire J. Howard Marshall, the 90-year-old husband of Anna Nicole Smith, in a 2013 Lifetime biopic about the sex symbol, and starred for Atom Egoyan opposite Christopher Plummer in Remember (2015).

And Landau appeared opposite Paul Sorvino in The Last Poker Game, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

Landau worked as director, teacher and executive director at the Actors Studio West. He has been credited with helping to guide the talents of Huston, Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton in addition to Nicholson.

A documentary about his life, An Actor’s Actor: The Life of Martin Landau, is in the works.

Survivors include his daughters Susie (a writer-producer) and Juliet (an actress-dancer) from his marriage to Bain; sons-in-law Roy and Deverill; sister Elinor; granddaughter Aria; and godson Dylan. Donations can be made to the Actors Studio West.
