Document showing Hergé working through possible titles for the album that would become Vol 714 pour Sydney and ably demonstrating why his publishers often had a hand in naming his books. What many of them lack in dignity, they make up for in how funny it would have been if they were actually published. Since I can't find a better quality image, I've transcribed and translated as much as I can.
Le nez de Tintin (Tintin's Nose) Marche devant, Tintin ! (You go first/Walk in front, Tintin!) Suis l'étoile, Tintin ! (Follow the star, Tintin!) L'imprudence de Tintin (Tintin's foolishness/recklessness) Le doute de Tintin (Tintin's doubt/suspicion) L'esquive de Tintin (Tintin's dodge/evasion) Rasta traque Tintin (Rasta[populos] hunts Tintin) Tintin entre deux mondes (Tintin between two worlds) Tintin et le monde entrevu (Tintin and the glimpsed world/the glimpse of a world) Tintin et le signe inconnu (Tintin and the unknown sign/symbol) Hardi, Tintin ! (Take Courage, Tintin!) Quand Tintin s'y perd (When Tintin Gets Lost/Confused) Un Tintin venu d'ailleurs (A Tintin from another world) Tintin et les gens d'ailleurs (Tintin and the people from another world) Pas par là, Tintin ! (Not that way/Don't go that way, Tintin!) Invulnérable Tintin (Invulnerable Tintin) Tintin au bout du monde (Tintin at the end of the world) Tintin à la frontière du monde (Tintin at the edge of the world) Depuis que le monde est monde (Since the dawn of time) Tintin et le monde renversé (Tintin and the world turned upside-down) Du tintouin pour Tintin (Troubles for Tintin) Hisse la voile, Tintin ! (Hoist the sail, Tintin!)
Les voyages forment le capitaine (Travel shapes the captain; play on "les voyages forment la jeunesse," often rendered as "travel broadens the mind") Un glaçon, capitaine ? (An ice cube, Captain?) A la vôtre, capitaine ! (To your health, Captain!) Si tu bois, ne navigue pas ! (Don't Drink and Sail!)
Silence, Milou ! (Quiet, Snowy!) Attention, chien Milou ! (Watch out, Snowy dog!)
Reveille-toi, Tintin ! (Wake up, Tintin!) Reveillez-vous, mille sabords ! (Blistering barnacles, wake up!)
Visa pour l'inconnu... (Passport to the unknown/to mystery)
Carreidas 767 a disparu (Carreidas 767 has vanished)
Le grand mal (?) de Tintin (Either "great evil" or "epilepsy." Neither are good options.)
Le rêve de Tintin (Tintin's dream) As-tu rêvé, Tintin ? (Were you dreaming, Tintin?)
Pas d'os (à moelle) pour Milou (No (marrow) bones for Snowy) Eden (?) à Rastapopulos (Rastapopulos' Eden) Le retour de Rastapopulos (The Return of Rastapopulos) Plus de whisky pour le capitaine (No more whisky for the Captain) T. et le milliardaire (T. [Tintin] and the billionaire) T. et la ligne du paradis (?) (Tintin and the Paradise Line) T. et le Kris (?) OUR FIVE FAVOURITE FRENCH RIVIERA BEACH CLUBS
If you’re visiting the French Riviera, you simply can’t leave without having experienced a long lunch at one of the many beach club restaurants along the coast. It is most definitely one of my all-time favourite things to do in summer.
There really is nothing quite like settling in for what you know will be hours, sitting in an absolutely breathtaking location, looking out at the ocean and the yachts, eating amazing seafood and sipping French wine…tell me, does it really get any better than that?
There are loads of beach clubs scattered right up and down the coast, but here I focussed only on the clubs that have a tender service for yachts at anchor. Also, given I doubt you want to read for hours, I had to whittle it down to my favourite five…(it was a tough call!).
So, here goes…
LA GUÉRITE, CANNES
La Guérite has been around for years, since 1935 to be exact, and it is definitely one of the coolest beach club restaurants on the French Riviera. It is set in an inlet on the island of Sainte-Marguerite, just off Cannes. After a long lunch here, you can easily see why the rich and famous have always flocked to this isolated gem of a restaurant.
It also happens to serve what I think is some of the best food in the area. Executive Chef Yiannis Kioroglou is Greek so the menu is heavily focussed on simple, delicious Mediterranean seafood. My favourite dishes include the open-cut grilled king prawns and the incredible lobster pasta; they are truly delicious and sum up everything that is good in this world!
Sundays are definitely a highlight, usually with a live band and a DJ later, but you can often find a live band on other days as well. If you’re after a quieter lunch I would suggest an earlier sitting but if you want a wilder vibe then things really kick off from 3pm.
Come here for: the amazing food, the secluded island setting, and some great people-watching and super-yacht-spotting.
ANJUNA BEACH, EZE
Anjuna Beach is an absolute institution on the Riviera, and you just can’t visit the area and not dine here! Entering Anjuna feels like you’ve somehow crossed seas and stepped into an island fishing village in the Indian Ocean…think aqua rescued wood, and white flowing dream-catchers.
Anjuna is known for its wild-fun, crazy parties where almost anything goes. It’s not uncommon to see an impeccably dressed 75 year old up dancing on the tables. If the party vibe is what you’re after then I suggest you come on a Saturday or Sunday. Be prepared to let a little loose and mingle with the eclectic crowd; once the band kicks off you’ll be up dancing and singing, sharing stories with strangers you’ll likely never meet again.
During the week Anjuna is back to a normal restaurant and beach club with the occasional troubadour band keeping things lively. The food here is simple and delicious Mediterranean fare. They offer a number of share dishes which are ideal amongst a group table…of note, you simply can’t not have the ribs…they’re incredible! They also have a really good selection of delicious entrees that are perfect to share around on a hot day when eating seems like too much work! The service here is top notch; they’re friendly and attentive and definitely on the ball.
Come here for: the incredible vibe, the eclectic mix of people (including a regular celeb or two),….and those ribs!
PALOMA BEACH RESTAURANT, SAINT-JEAN-CAP-FERRAT
Paloma Beach Restaurant is all about secluded serenity and incredible views. This place was designed for chilling, relaxing and soaking in the sounds and the sights. The setting for this hidden restaurant is down some steep steps, in a quiet little bay tucked around the super exclusive peninsular of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The restaurant has been here since 1948 and is run by a group who have a collection of great dining spots around Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer.
The food here is focussed on seafood, with simple Mediterranean inspired dishes (are you noticing a trend here?). In my opinion they serve one of the best lobster spaghetti dishes on the Riviera, it is absolutely delicious…classic, without too much tomato sauce, and with a whole lobster tail perched on top.
Paloma loves families and bringing people together. It is a perfect location for a birthday celebration amongst friends or an anniversary or engagement occasion. When you sit looking out at the water and the beautiful houses tumbling down the hills of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Beaulieu-sur-Mer, you really do feel like there is no place on earth you would rather be. In fact, I had this exact feeling three years ago, sitting in this very location, and then and there, I made up my mind to move to the South of France and never leave!
Come here for: the incredible serenity and beautiful views, late lunch sittings that run until 5pm, and to fall in love once-and-for-all with the South of France.
EDEN PLAGE MALA, CAP D’AIL
Eden Plage Mala has been around for a while, but this year they have really changed their game and they now join my favourite list. As the name suggests, this beach club is a secluded little paradise, hidden deep down, surrounded by towering rocky cliffs in a little bay in Cap D’Ail. Here Eden has created a serene escape, complete with a carp pond, palm fronds, natural wood and tropical gardens.
In terms of food, Eden has tried to mix things up a little. There are some Italian favourites like fritto misto and burrata salad, mixed in with some Asian and Hawaiian influenced dishes like Thai salad and ceviche. They also have a really great selection of salad bowls from across the world. A brilliant thing about Eden is that they have a menu available for yachts at anchor; just order from the navette skipper and it is with you in 20 minutes.
If you’re after a relaxing day in a beach club then Eden is a perfect place. They have lovely big round day beds for groups, and offer massages in their spa area. Under new management, Sophie and her staff are very attentive and lovely, which all helps to make Eden a beautiful and relaxing place to dine or spend the day.
Come here for: cuisine with a difference, to escape from the rat race, or for a day on your yacht with food delivered on board.
PLAGE DE PASSABLE, SAINT-JEAN-CAP-FERRAT
I would have to say, that of all the beach clubs mentioned here, I think Passable has the best view. Some may disagree, but to me, the crystal clear water and the view over to the old town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, awash with masses of bougainvillea, is second to none.
This beach club is a great all-rounder. They have a large restaurant with lots of seating and a large number of day loungers in the beach club. The beauty of this is that you can usually get a table at the last minute. The vibe here is no fuss; it is a simple delicious meal, in a beautiful setting and at a reasonable price.
The food at Passable is once again quite Mediterranean in style, but with an Italian bent. They serve delicious whole fish of the day, done very simply in the Italian style and also do a lovely spaghetti vongole. And for those of you with children, you will be pleased to know that they serve pizza.
The biggest draw card for Passable is that it is situated in one of the best bays to anchor for yachts; the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Their navette service is super-fast, aided by the very lovely Jean-Michelle, and once you’re anchored here, there really is no need to visit any other bays.
Come here for: the breathtaking views, a simple, no-fuss lunch, and the perfect anchorage if you’re on a yacht.
We are Wild Child Charters, offering day charters with a difference across the French Riviera on board our very unique Wider 42. For more information get in touch by visiting www.wild-child-charters.com
** Just a side note, you’ll notice I haven’t covered Saint Tropez here, that is because there is so much change going on with the beach clubs there that I don’t know it well enough this season.

Cap-D’Ail.

So as some of you know, I went to Germany for the Plage Noire music festival! I was in Berlin and Leipzig for a while first, but this post will get very long if I write about everything, so I’m going to stick with the festival.
Plage Noire is a goth/industrial festival on the North Sea. I arrived the day before the festival, so I had some time to check out the beach. I didn’t dare brave the water – it looked very cold – but I took a nice walk.
There is still sand in my shoes, and it will not come out no matter what I do. I had dinner at an “American Diner,” where I got a chicken burger with cheese sauce and coleslaw on it, and a milkshake with sprinkles and marshmallows. It was…not particularly close to being American and I loved it. I had another meal there on Saturday, which was currywurst.
The festival started for real on Friday, but not until the evening, so I had some time to wander around first. I went back to the beach and got sand in my other shoes, and did some reading there. I also got an enormous bottle of my favorite soda, Mezzo Mix, which is only found in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Finally, it was festival time! I managed to snag a spot front and center for Das Ich, the founders of the Neue Deutsche Todeskunst movement, by arriving an hour early. I’d seen Das Ich once previously in Richmond, VA (where I drove 5 hours round trip and drank two bottles of Mountain Dew), but this was WAY better. They sang my three favorite songs (Kannibale, Re_animat, and Destillat) and the performance was great!
From there I went straight to see Blitz Union, one of my absolute favorite bands. I caught the very tail end of the previously performing group, and thought I’d stay at the stage to make sure I got a good spot even though Blitz Union wouldn’t start for an hour (which is what I had done for Das Ich). Turns out, that stage is supposed to be cleared out between shows, which I did NOT know, so I was present for parts of the sound check I was not supposed to be there for. I thought it was super cool, and didn’t know why no one else was sticking around for that, before being asked very politely to leave.
While waiting to return to the stage, I met two extremely cool people who I hung out with for most of the evening.
Blitz Union was AMAZING. They alone were worth the 10 hour flight and six hours of train travel to get to the festival. My favorite song was Candidate, but everything was so, so good. They absolutely owned the stage. I’d put their performance easily in my Top 5 shows I’ve ever seen. Better yet…after the show I got to meet them!!!
Late that night, I went to the dance party DJed by Bruno Kramm of Das Ich.
Saturday was the second day of the festival, and I had my agenda. First up was A Projection. I didn’t know them super well – I had heard (and really liked) their song Darwin’s Eden, which is why I had decided to see them, but I was largely unfamiliar with their catalogue. They were FANTASTIC. Veiled by smoke (to the extent that the drummer was almost invisible) they put on an extremely dynamic and energetic performance. The music was great, and I’ve been listening to it almost nonstop since I got home. They were Saturday’s highlight performance, even over headliner And One.
Right after them was Manntra! Once again I was at the very front (I also was at the front with Blitz Union, and very close with A Projection) so I got the full experience. The traditional Croatian elements combined with metal worked so well, and they brought the songs I listen to all the time to life.
After Manntra I needed to give my ears a break (I wore ear protection, but it was still very loud), so I went and drank some Mezzo Mix before And One.
I had almost seen And One in DC, but they cancelled the show at the last minute because they didn’t bother getting their visas, so I was very excited to finally see them. The singer really moved around the stage, spinning like a helicopter at times (I liked that). It was very danceable music, and a great way to wrap up the festival.
The next day it was time to go. :(
Sunday’s adventure was getting kicked off a train, but I said I’d stick to the festival so I’ll stop here.
In conclusion, everything was awesome and you should absolutely check out Blitz Union and A Projection in particular.

Her neyse, işte bu kadının Marion'a benzeyeceğini biliyorum. Ve yavaş yavaş bütün kadınlar böyle görünmeye başlayacak. Milyarlarca Marion'un yaşadığı bir dünyayı hayal edebiliyor musun?”
Mubi’de izlemiştim, oradaki diğer Eric Rohmer filmlerinden devam edeceğim.

Michel Piccoli obituary
Stalwart of French cinema whose prolific career included films with Luis Buñuel, Jean-Luc Godard and Claude Chabrol
By Ronald Bergan
For more than half a century, there seemed to be one constant in French cinema – the actor Michel Piccoli. With his death at the age of 94 something vital has disappeared from the screen.
Never young looking – he was prematurely bald – Piccoli grew in maturity and power over the years, with directors such as Luis Buñuel, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Marco Ferreri and Claude Sautet seeking his services more than once. He also worked for directors of the stature of Alfred Hitchcock, Henri-Georges Clouzot, Jacques Rivette, Costa-Gavras and Louis Malle.
Even when he was a big name, Piccoli was never too proud to play small supporting roles or even bit parts if he liked the screenplay. But whatever the size of the role, whether playing a goody or a baddie, Piccoli would bring to the character a gravitas (with a tinge of humour) and an ironic detachment, simultaneously revealing a real, recognisable human being beneath the surface.
Piccoli was born in Paris to a French mother and an Italian father, both of them musicians – his mother was a pianist; his father a violinist. At 19, he made his screen debut in a walk-on part in Sortilèges (1945), directed by Christian-Jaque.
After several roles in the cinema and theatre, he met Buñuel. “I wrote to this famous director asking him to come and see me in a play. Me, an obscure actor! It was the cheek of a young man. He came and we became friends.” Piccoli appeared in six of Buñuel’s films, usually cast as a silky, authoritarian figure.
His first performance for Buñuel was as a weak, compromised priest trekking through the Brazilian jungle in La Mort en Ce Jardin (Death in the Garden/Evil Eden, 1956). In Diary of a Chambermaid (1964), he was the idle and lecherous Monsieur Monteil, sexually obsessed with Jeanne Moreau as the maid Célestine.
Just as louche was his smooth bourgeois gentleman who persuades a respectable doctor’s wife (Catherine Deneuve) to spend her afternoons working in a high-class brothel with kinky clients in Belle de Jour (1967). Piccoli reprised the role charmingly almost 40 years later in Manoel de Oliveira’s Belle Toujours (2006).
He was discreetly charming as the Marquis de Sade in Buñuel’s La Voie Lactée (The Milky Way, 1969), subtly overbearing as the home secretary in The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) and sinister as a prefect of police in Buñuel’s penultimate film, Le Fantôme de la Liberté (The Phantom of Liberty, 1974).
In the 1950s, apart from his one film with Buñuel and his appearance as María Félix’s jealous lover in Jean Renoir’s French Cancan, Piccoli was cast mainly in run-of-the mill “policiers”. During this period, Piccoli was part of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés set in Paris, which included the writers Boris Vian, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, and the café singer Juliette Gréco, to whom he was married from 1966 to 1977. He was also an active member of the French Communist party.
The 60s was his most creatively exciting and varied decade. His first leading role (with Serge Reggiani and Jean-Paul Belmondo) was as an unscrupulous gangster in Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Doulos (The Finger Man, 1962).
This led to one of his best remembered parts, as Brigitte Bardot’s husband in Godard’s Le Mépris (Contempt, 1963), in which he plays a screenwriter, willing to sell his wife to a producer (Jack Palance) in order to get his script filmed by Fritz Lang. In a homage to Dean Martin’s character in Vincente Minnelli’s Some Came Running, Piccoli wears a cowboy hat in the bath.
As memorable as this image was the name of the character he played in Jacques Demy’s Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (The Young Girls of Rochefort, 1967). As Simon Dame, he is continually being greeted as Monsieur Dame (a joke that works only in French), and is rebuffed by Danielle Darrieux, who cannot bear the thought of being called Madame Dame.
It was in 1968 that Piccoli met Ferreri, who starred him in Dillinger È Morto (Dillinger Is Dead), a bleak study of alienation, in which a man’s life is laid bare. Piccoli is brilliant as an industrial designer who, while spending an evening at home, making himself a meal, watching TV and seducing the maid, decides to kill his wife and go to Tahiti.
It was the first of seven films the actor made for the Italian-born director, the most infamous being La Grande Bouffe (Blow Out, 1973), an excessive film about excess, where Piccoli as a TV personality, along with a pilot, a judge and a chef, all bored with life, literally eat themselves to death.
Piccoli’s few roles in English language films were less than challenging: they included his secret agent in Hitchcock’s Topaz (1969) and the suave card dealer in Malle’s Atlantic City (1981).
He was much happier in France, where his talents were not only respected but revered. His several films for Sautet showed him as a complex and flawed hero, starting with Les Choses de la Vie (The Things of Life, 1970), in which he played a man who, although having an affair, finds himself still attached to his estranged wife, his son and friends, and consequently unable to make the absolute commitment his lover requires.
In 1973, Piccoli formed a production company which kicked off with that year’s Themroc, directed by Claude Faraldo, in which he played a factory worker, living in a squalid flat with his mother and sister, pursuing an existence of repetitive routine and urban grind, before he rebels. What made this biting social satire particularly unusual was that language was abandoned completely, with the characters having to communicate in a series of formless noises, something Piccoli does particularly effectively.
Piccoli then returned to his speciality – the urbane bourgeois – in Chabrol’s blackly comic Les Noces Rouges (Blood Wedding, 1973), where he played a mayor’s deputy having an affair with his boss’s wife. In Godard’s Passion (1982), he was a factory owner whose wife is having an affair with a film director.
He gave three of his largest and most impressive performances in his late 60s and 70s. In Malle’s Milou en Mai (Milou in May, 1990), he is the ideal repository of all the director’s sympathies, the upholder of the best of traditional country values, unambitious, unacquisitive and a lover of nature, in contrast to his greedy middle-class family gathered for a funeral.
Rivette’s La Belle Noiseuse (1991) cast him magisterially as a famous artist trying to capture a new nude young model on canvas. In Oliveira’s Je Rentre à la Maison (I’m Going Home, 2001), Piccoli struck a personal and poignant note as an actor trying to deal with old age, and refusing to compromise his principles.
He shone in what amounted to almost a cameo as the courtly but bumbling elderly relative of the Duchess of Langeais (Jeanne Balibar) in Rivette’s Ne Touchez Pas la Hache (Don’t Touch the Axe, 2007), a version of Balzac’s novel on erotic obsession.
For the English language The Dust of Time (2008), Theo Angelopoulos’s last film, Piccoli joined such stalwarts of European art cinema as Bruno Ganz and Irène Jacob in a love triangle that covers the latter part of the 20th century. Despite some of the stilted dialogue, Piccoli bares the soul of a character whose sufferings include his internment and escape from a gulag.
He dominated every moment as a reserved and modest cardinal who panics when elected pontiff in Nanni Moretti’s semi-satire Habemus Papam (We Have a Pope, 2011). The first close-ups of him, when he realises he has been appointed the new pope, suggest, with subtle expressions, emotions ranging from surprise, humility, ambivalence, excitement and then horror.
In Vous N’avez Encore Rien Vu (You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet, 2012), Alain Resnais’ intriguing, self-reflective examination of actors and acting, film and theatre, Piccoli, playing himself, is the doyen in a cast of leading French actors of the day.
He directed the features Alors Voilà (1997) and La Plage Noire (The Black Beach, 2001), the former winning the Critics’ prize at Venice, to add to the many prizes he had won as an actor. It was appropriate that when Agnès Varda filmed One Hundred and One Nights for the centenary of the cinema in 1995, she cast Piccoli as Monsieur Cinema.
He was married three times. His first two marriages, to Eléonore Hirt and to Gréco, ended in divorce. He is survived by his third wife, the screenwriter Ludivine Clerc, whom he married in 1978, and by his daughter, Anne-Cordélia, from his first marriage.
