I'm begging you, please stop italicising te reo Māori words in your fics.

There's a really excellent article by Khairani Barokka on why italicising non-English words in general is not a great idea. (tl;dr: it's very othering)

For te reo there's an additional reason, which is that most of us in Aotearoa stopped italicising te reo decades ago and now when we see it it looks fucking weird. It feels like you're holding the word with tongs; like you're saying "hey I found this weird foreign word and I don't really know what to do with it!"

Which is a pity, because there's some really good fics out there exploring Ed's Māori identity, and the italicising makes them look less good than they are. (I'm planning a specific recs post, but want it to be 100% positive, also there's stuff I haven't read yet.)

I don't want this to be a call out post, because I hate that shit, and I know that everyone's coming from a good place. If you've been italicising te reo words, you're probably doing what you were taught was the right thing, and I genuinely don't want you to feel bad about it. This is just a learning experience; go forth and use italics as they should be used in fan fiction:

PS I can't write about italicisation and te reo without mentioning the brilliant Alice Te Punga Somerville and the especially her poem Kupu rere kē.

• mess is mine - vance joy ✨ i'm sorry but the lyrics "this body is yours and mine" & "now your mess is mine" is so channie-coded to me. he is offering himself up to you. anything you want from him is yours & he will take on all of your hurt

• fire and the flood AND lay it on me - vance joy ✨ these were just so all-encompassing, i couldn't not include them. you become the most consuming part of his life. he quite literally can't go a day without thinking of you and how fucking attached his heart is to yours. you are his everything and only thing. "i always feel you in my blood" & "your love's always finding me out."

• until you - ahi ✨ this song isn't as relevant NOW, but it really throws me into a pre-debut channie love story tbh. bless his little heart 💔 i couldn't NOT include it bc it's still beautiful.

• anointed - miguel AND religion - lana del rey ✨ these have the same purpose, so i'm including them together. when channie is truly in love with you, he won't fuck you- he fucking worships you. well, you worship each other in the bedroom. and i feel this a million times. he needs something deeper and he needs to feel consumed in it. praising each other until you physically have no stamina left in your body.

• berenstein - the band camino ✨ chan always talks about alternate universes, so i had to add this one in. the line "at another place in time, you were infinitely mine," it makes me think so much about if you were perfect with channie, and you both knew that... but you simply couldn't be with him because of his idol life. but you knew that somewhere out there in a parallel universe, he wasn't an idol, and you were together like you were meant to be :((((

Maybe it’s because I’m a Hawaii five-0 fan, but I can’t see Buck and Eddie as romantically written after watching Steve and Danny. I know they’re different shows, but it’s night and day even with some similarities.

(Warning for very small, vague spoilers. I’m halfway through S10 of Hawaii 5-0 so no spoilers for S10 please. Also I highly rec H50)

McDanno:

Characters always commenting on their relationship. “Mom and dad” “parents” “married”

Buddie:

2 comments on their relationship. Online stream viewers, Elf. Both in the earliest seasons for Eddie.

McDanno:

Takes care of Danny’s kids. Kisses them on the head. Tucks them into bed. Says I love you multiple times. Steve rescues Danny’s daughter from multiple highly dangerous situations and is openly distraught about it. Calls Danny’s daughter “my girl.” Brings Danny’s kid into Steve’s life, even when he’s in a relationship.

Buddie:

Takes care of Chris on fewer ~on screen~ occasions. Openly distraught when saving him on one the one occasion the show gave. Does obvi 100% love Chris and spends time with him, but it’s seen less on screen due to the nature of the show.

McDanno:

Danny calls Steve “babe”. Multiple times. An episode. Steve calls (and refers to) Danny “Danno” a family nickname.

Buddie:

Contrary to popular opinion, Buck has never called Eddie “Eds” nor do they regularly use any other cute nicknames for each other.

Mcdanno:

Treated in the show as a romantic pairing when they’re both not in relationships, and even when they are. In most episodes. In a fantasy sequence (no spoilers) they literally take pictures with a certain child and grow old together. They cuddled on the couch. They were roommates. They’ve pretended to be a gay couple. They touch each other all the freaking time: arms, shoulders, hands, lower back (it was a joke but also not), head. Have slow-ish danced together. Eat breakfast together while sitting on the counter. They’d save each other no matter what it takes. They went on a couples retreat. Couples counseling. They say I love you constantly, like once they started saying it they just kept saying it. They’ve given literal pieces of each other to the other (hard to not spoiler that so kept it vague)

Buddie:

They aren’t treated like a romantic pairing in every episode. At most they say the other always invites the other and they’ve been seen together in the end of episode wrap ups. The couch theory would’ve been a great time to dig into stuff. They’d save each other, but because of the show it’s not nearly the same level of involvement. Have never said I love you (correct me on that if I forgot). They’re treated as best friends who are clearly very much in each other’s lives, but they didn’t push the line into it being romance.

Mcdanno:

They’re literally intertwined in each other’s lives. Like financially, physically, emotionally, career-wise. We know how much they’re involved with each other even when the other isn’t there. Other characters will bring them up. They can’t have storylines without the other being involved in some way.

Buddie:

They’re in each other’s lives legally, emotionally, and career-wise. Though, they can have separate storylines that don’t involve the other.

McDanno:

Talk about the hard stuff a lot. Their lives, feelings, relationships, sex lives.

Buddie:

Talk about the hard stuff less. When there’s monumental stuff they do, but it’s rarer, but the show is also less dark and has less episodes.

Mcdanno:

Can read each other’s minds and body language in and out of work: People comment on it.

Buddie:

They can read each other. Mostly at work. Nobody ever comments beyond their good work.

McDanno:

Called each other “brother” a few times and it didn’t kill the non-platonic vibes.

Buddie:

Called each other “brother” once, and if done again, it would kill any romantic vibes.

In all:

They’re different shows. H50 has about 25 episodes a season and is a different genre of show to 911. But the relationships, the two men, divorced, kid(s), work together, is similar, though drastically different.

McDanno never went cannon. I can watch the show and see it both romantic and like an amazing bromance. It’s not a far grasp to see the romance.

Who knows about Buddie going canon, the show is still on air. But it reads like a very deep friendship, a great bromance. The romance stuff isn’t there. Do I think it could be? Yeah, but they have to put it in by choice and not leave it to interpretation. As of now? Nothing that can be 100% read as romantic.

Oh, buddy, I am friends with SO many extremely talented writers who work their absolute butts off to give us incredible fic and I know I'm going to miss people, so I'm going to cheat a bit and rec some recent-ish fics written by beloved mutuals. Would 100% encourage you to check out the linked story and then their entire collection of works because they are all fab. 💕

The Detectorists AU by @monksofthescrew. Two-part metal detecting AU. It is so atmospheric, so rich and tender and nuanced with some really incredible timey wimey stuff intertwined. I'm a little biased because I beta read these, but I think of them so often. Just a master class in story telling.

Respawn by @glamaphonic. This is SUCH a fun AU where Ed and Stede are both streamers. The concept works SO well, and the flirting and banter is top-tier. I know next to nothing about video games and I've still been able to follow along easily, squeezing my cheeks and kicking my feet the entire time.

wanna fly away (I don't know where my soul is) by @ghostalservice and @petrichorca. Speaking of fics I love where I know nothing about the concept, this is an Animorphs AU where Stede is just the most precious alien whom I would 100000% die for. It's such a fun, rich, layered story and I'm eagerly awaiting to see where it goes. Also just love this description of it: Our story is about finding one’s place in the universe (actually and figuratively), plays with the transformative nature of morphing and the power to change one’s body, and explores two individuals from wildly different backgrounds falling in love.

Moonstone Mage Championship by @blakbonnet. Holy crap, the WORLD BUILDING. Meow's mind is a wonder. I truly don't know how she does it, but I am literally in awe of her work on this fic. One of the most creative and detailed stories I've ever read.

Different Names for the Same Thing by @oatmilktruther. I have been rotating this fic in my brain ever since it was posted. I don't even have proper words to describe how gorgeous it is. It's basically my soul now. Abs' gift for blending humor and tenderness and making you feel the love between Ed and Stede is unparalleled.

My Father's House by @trans-top-stede. Owen describes this as "a t4t theatre au (kind of)" because it is about theatre, but it's mostly about gender and families and the healing power of queer art" and YES. It's beautiful and tender and hot and that last line has stuck with me ever since it was posted.

Gold Rush by @abigailpents. Potentially the sweetest AU I've ever read. Just pure love and romance. Just let yourself get swept away. It is lovely.

Tree Change by @clairegregoryau. I am constantly in awe of all the work Claire puts into her fics. She is operating on a whole other stratosphere and it's incredible to watch. Tree Change is a little teaser for what promises to be an incredibly unhinged Kinktober and I am just rubbing my hands with glee for what's to come. (ba dum tss.)

First and foremost...this show is OLD...old in the best way however!! It's from the 70s...so if you don't like old television...maaaaybe this isn't gonna be for you. Just kidding! Anyone (even those who aren't fans of old tv shows) will like this one! Why?! Because of several, several reasons. Which I will now highlight in the next points:

Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson are not only some of the best looking men (pictured in the gifs above) to have ever graced the screen...they were also LEGENDS of their time. Cassidy made his own music (which is CLASSIC by the way) and Stevenson was a pretty epic surfer (which is also showcased in the show in the most epic of ways). In addition to them...we also were blessed with Pamela Sue Martin as Nancy Drew for the first half of the series. If you don't have a crush on her by the end of the series btw then you are NOT normal haha! While we have some AMAZING lead actors/actresses, we also have phenomenal supporting actors/tresses with Ed Gilbert as Fenton Hardy, Lisa Eilbacher as Callie, and so, so many more!!!

Next reason you'll fall in love with this show...the graphics, while old as mentioned above...are so, so incredibly nostalgic! Even if you weren't around in the 70s (which I was NOT lol), this show will STILL feel nostalgic to you. To me, every time I watch it it's like I'm transported to a different, better world in which I have frizzy yet gorgeous hair, bell bottoms, and a leather jacket that somehow never makes you too hot (lol). But seriously...the show has a sort of magic way of taking you to that time and instantly relieving you of all your worries back here in the 2020s. It's literally insane how much this show can cure my bad mood. Like just watching the theme song takes my day from 0 to 100 (and that's cause the theme song is soooooooo iconic!! They even made fake book covers like the actual book series with the actors' images on them...like omg that's cool!!)

Final point I'll make for the show (cause just like with Case Closed...I could probably write a novel on this show alone) the Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Mysteries is great if not for the awesome monster makeup, plot lines, and zingy one-liners courtesy of Frank and Joe, but for the shear incredible chemistry between all the actors. Like Oh. My. Gosh! If I didn't know they were actors I would not be able to tell that Cassidy and Stevenson weren't actually brothers in real life. Their body language, the script, videography, EVERYTHING works together in this show to really sell that they're brothers. Not only that, but their interactions with Gilbert and all the side characters sell this home as well. Like I know it's all acting, but the looks they give each other and the way they tease each other during the little moments of the show like GAH! It...it just...I don't even have words for how awesome it is. Just go watch the show...you will 100% not regret it!!

Okay....now for the rating!!! I gave Case Closed a 5/5 and this show is no different. I will say that if I could, I would give this one like 1 billion stars out of 5...but I'll keep it simple and stick with the grading scale. 5/5 Stars! 🌟What a GOAT of a show!!

I don't know if you listen to any Lord Huron, but I was checking out some of their songs a couple weeks ago and discovered one of their most popular ones, Meet Me In the Woods. And I *immediately* thought of Those That Remain (your AU of Eldritch Horror!Maglor series).

You might already know the song, but I mean, just look at these lyrics!

"I took a little journey to the unknown And I've come back changed, I can feel it in my bones I f***ed with forces that our eyes can't see Now the darkness got a hold on me Oh, the darkness got a hold on me

This 100% reminds me of Daeron in that fic. And also Maglor, lowkey. "I took a little journey to the unknown, and I've come back changed" and "I f***ed with forces that our eyes can't see" / "there ain't language for the things I've seen, and the truth is stranger than my own worst dreams"—this all sounds so much like Daeron and Maglor's experiences. However, this song feels very woodsy, which is of course what Daeron's eldritch-ness is based in, so I'm naturally thinking of this more from his perspective than Maglor's. And then "Don't look back, them days are gone" makes me think of Daeron wanting to ignore his past and what happened to him. And "I can bring your fears to life, show me yours and I'll show you mine, meet me in the woods tonight" makes me think of Daeron and Maglor realizing the eldritch horror the other has turned into and attacking each other at first (and then again when Lindir was out on an errand), but then starting to become at peace with each other and understand each other. Also, the song has a slightly...mystical? Ethereal? quality that feels very right for this kind of story.

Everybody dies at the end @A@ And her older brother is the first one to go (by offing himself @~@) It all stems from the OG!ML marrying bro's secret love, the OG!FL, and the OG!FL also realises her mutual feelings too late. Big bro was her oshi in the novel so of course, gotta come up with a plan to save him while they're all still young and the tragedy hasn't really started yet. It's all so simple. This 6-year-old kid just has to propose to this other 10-year-old child. What could possibly go wrong.

this is a complex question that varies depending on the media!! let's see.

animorphs - go for it dude! i love the series a lot, i grew up reading it as a kid. and it is kid appropriate, though if you don't like body horror you're probably not going to get a lot out of it lol. i've heard from writing club that my writing is very "comic book" like, and i think i get it from reading a lot of animorphs in my formative years. there are about 66 books in the series in total, but almost all of them are quite short and manageable.

adventure time - my favorite!!! now this show is definitely a long haul, 10 seasons, but the episodes are also bite-sized at 11 minutes each and most episodes are very self contained with a couple ongoing plot lines that get touched on now and then (other than the handful of miniseries toward the end that tell more complete stories over the course of 8 episodes each). it's like my favorite kind of storytelling.

paper mario - a very enjoyable simple rpg series. well, action rpg? spm changes it up a bit. i like the first three games in the series a lot. the ones after that aren't necessarily bad games (the only game in the series that i've 100%ed is sticker star for example) but the first three have a special place in my heart for those sprawling stories they tell. if you like quirky fun stories that can get surprisingly deep considering the short (for an rpg) run time, i think you'll enjoy them too! origami king gets a shoutout, though it didn't stick with me as much.

homestuck - i've talked about this frequently enough in my friend group dkgjakjdgdgdjk but i think the main deterrents for whether i'd recommend it or not are the length and the ending. like, this thing is 8000 pages long, it's an INVESTMENT, and i found the "rough draft"-ness of the script really caught up with it in a bad way by the final act. if you do get into it though it's fascinating and fun and immersive and imaginative and it grabs your brain and doesn't let go lol.

portal - FINALLY, a short thing that's easy to get into. i adore portal 2, it's my favorite game, and portal 1 is also fantastic. a+, no notes, go play it and enjoy the wretched little robots.

rice boy comics - it's no secret that evan dahm is one of my favorite storytellers out there. i re-read his comics all the time. he builds really interesting worlds and reveals them in such an organic and thoughtful way, and he's got a great track record for finishing stories (even epic length ones like vattu that are over 1200 pages). they consistently amaze me and inspire me to really think through how i want my reader to experience my story, both in the information they're allowed to have and the order in which that information is presented.
