This Economy Fried Bee Hoon (经济炒米粉) or rice vermicelli is a popular breakfast dish for many Singaporean. It is both cheap and filling with just a fried egg or fried luncheon meat added though mum chose a sweet & sour battered fish fillet for me.

大家好! Pa had intended to buy me a birthday lunch at 1 of the top Chinese restaurants in the country. Covid, and the hyperinflation which resulted from global economies reopening at roughly about the same time, has turned me off travelling far away and dining at crowded spots. Instead, I requested to have xiao long bao (soup dumplings), stirfried egg whites with conpoy, men mian xian (braised longevity noodles) and red bean pancakes. He obliged and I was happy slurping up the broth from those delicious xiao long bao!
youtube
There was a full day of site visits for work and it was like a school excursion! Whilst I can't share videos and photos of the places I visited, they'd arranged for a catered lunch. Crispy wanton, battered fish, chicken, mixed vegetables, spring roll and fried rice - a tasty balanced meal that made me pretty happy. With a full belly, we continued with the back-to-back site visits. It was a hectic day and I was exhausted, but it was interesting and enjoyable.
I don't crave fastfood but when the craving for laksa hits, it's so intense, I dash to the nearest place which serves a decent version to get my fix. QQ thick bee hoon (vermicelli) submerged in fragrant spicy broth is topped with fish cake slices, see hum (cockles), tau pok (bean puff), crunchy bean sprouts and a dollop of sambal. This bowl of laksa cost $5 with added see hum. Toss in an iced local coffee and the total came up to $6.80, roughly about the same price as a Macdonald's meal here. Naturally, I gravitate towards our local favourite since I find it more delicious than fastfood!
youtube
A breakfast value meal at Macdonald's is priced at $6 - $9.60 in my country, whereas my hearty morning meal of noodles with bouncy fish cake, onion scrambled eggs and curry vegetables set me back just $3.70. A hot coffee is priced at 70 cents at my usual breakfast hangout, bringing the total to $4.40. High protein and fibre for a fraction of the price of a fastfood meal; why would I not opt for local fare? To me, fastfood meals are overpriced based on their nutritional value.
ASEAN is sending help to Gaza. Singapore has completed its first airdrop of food and critical supplies. Malaysia's NGO, KHOM, will be doing the same for food boxes. More importantly, they're not being hypocritical about it, unlike countries sending weapons to Israel that enable it to commit genocide and in the same breath, pretending to send aid to Palestinians. I mean, you can't sincerely want to save the very same people you're indirectly killing, right? 下次见!

Airline: Malaysia Airlines Flight Number: MH71 Route: NRT-KUL Class: Business Class Aircraft: Airbus A330-300 Registration: 9M-MTJ Delivered: September 2012 Flight Duration: 7 hours 25 minutes Distance: 3,365 Miles
Overall Impression:
Selamat Datang! Come join me and let’s fly to Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines Business Class !
Malaysia Airlines (MAS/MH) is one of my favorite Southeast Asian carriers. I’ve mostly flown them on short hops to/from Kuala Lumpur, so I was looking forward to flying them on a much longer (but still regional) route. My flight was originally being serviced by MH’s Airbus A350, but there was a last minute equipment change to an A330. This Airbus A330-300 flight from NRT-KUL offers 2 classes of service, Business and Economy Class. There are 27 seats in business class configured in a 1-2-1(2) staggered layout similar to Swiss’ Business class configuration. Most seats have direct aisle access, and all turn into a full flat bed along with a full size pillow and duvet. Aigner branded Amenity kits were also provided to Business Class passengers. Onboard service was very good. The crew, though not as polished as other crews from leading carriers delivered warm and engaging service. The food was also delicious, and nicely presented. Overall I think MH offers a solid business class product on this route. The seats are comfortable, service very good, and the catering, delicious!
What I liked:
JAL First Class Lounge in NRT – We got access to the JAL First Class Lounge via our Oneworld Emerald Status. This is my favorite lounge in NRT. The first class section has been recently renovated, and I love the minimalist decor. There’s plenty of food and beverage options including made to order food ramen and sushi. There’s also plenty of seating to lounge and relax before the flight.

The Food – I’m a big fan of Malaysian food, and I love how MH offers their signature satay service right after takeoff. The onboard catering out of NRT was also delicious. I ordered the Japanese set for the first meal, and it was tastefully presented, as it was delectable. 2 hours before landing, I ordered some vegetarian fried noodles (mee bee hoon goreng) and it was nice and spicy.

The Onboard Service – The flight attendants delivered a very warm and engaging service. There was no language barrier, as most of them speak English very well. The male flight attendant working our aisle was chatty and he came by a few times to see how we’re doing and what our plans are in KL. The crew though not as polished, as let’s say Singapore Airlines’ crew were all well-intentioned and very eager to please. Pre-departure beverage service with hot towels were offered. I was also proactively offered drink refills and the crew always responded to my please and thank yous.

The Airplane/Onboard Amenities – The Airbus A330 has become one of MH’s workhorse on longer flights, as it got rid of all of its Boeing 777-200s after the MH 370 and MH17 disasters. This aircraft is about 7 years old, as it was delivered in 2012. The Business class cabin still looked fresh and well maintained. A full size pillow/duvet, bottled water, noise canceling headphones, and Aigner-branded amenity kit were all waiting at my seat upon boarding. The lavatories were kept very clean by the crew, and well stocked with Acca Kappa toiletries along with toothbrushes and razors. One last thing: AIR NOZZLES! This Airbus A330 was fitted with air nozzles, and the crew kept the cabin perfectly cool during the flight, which is made it easier to relax and fall asleep. You hear that, JAL? 🙂
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
What I didn’t like:
The IFE – MH’s IFE system was a bit too basic. Yes, there were a few dozen movies, TV shows, and other media content, but the interface was kind of wonky, and the screen was not very clear compared to newer IFE systems on other airlines. The moving map was also very meager.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
It was OK…I guess:
The Seats – MH offers a decent business class seat on their Airbus A330. The seat configuration is 1-2-1(2), where as all of the portside seats are single seats, while on the starboard side, the seats alternate between double seats for those traveling together, and the highly coveted single “throne” seats. I was seated in 7A, one of the single seats on the port side the plane in the last row of business class. I thought seat was comfortable for both sitting and sleeping, but my only complaint is the seat width is a little on the narrow side, so bigger folks beware.

Bottom Line:
I’m a Oneworld flyer for the most part, so my choice for this route is either Japan Airlines or Malaysia Airlines. I know most people would probably choose JAL , but I actually prefer MH on this route, and this is mainly because I like the MH business class seats over the JAL Sky Suite III on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. MH also offers a full amenity kit, compared to the mini wash bags that JAL hands out on this route. Not to mention MH keeps their cabins cool during the flight, compared to JAL’s flying sauna warmer cabins with no air nozzles. In terms of the food onboard, MH’s catering out of Narita was also superb and almost on par with JAL’s onboard offerings, plus MH offers satay service. The service from the crew on this flight was also very warm and casual, unlike JAL’s very formal (and sometimes robot-like) reception. Both JAL and MH uses the JAL Sakura/First Class Lounge in Narita, which is awesome. Overall a great flight, and I would definitely fly MH again on this route, given the choice.

This Singapore Fried Noodles (星洲米粉) from the tze char (煮炒) is for mum. Basically, a rice vermicelli noodles stir-fried with shrimps, char siu, eggs, bean sprouts and cabbages with a lime to add some acidity and citrus fragrant.
I am a rice person so Economy Rice (菜饭) is my go-to option. Got some stewed potato slices, egg tofu with a piece of steamed fish fillet. I love my fish simply steamed with a drizzle of shallot and ginger oil for added fragrant.

Mum’s Singapore Fried Noodles (星洲米粉) bought from the tze char (煮炒) stall across the street. The bee hoon or rice vermicelli came with plenty of ingredients like shrimps, char siu cubes, bean sprouts, cabbage, egg and a lime to squeeze over the noodles.
I went with the simpler option of Economy Rice (菜饭) picking the dishes I like. A crispy and crunchy spread of savoury sweet ikan bilis (dried anchovies) and peanuts covered three-quarter of the box. Underneath it, stewed potato slices sit on the white rice. On the right a piece of steamed fish fillet with spring onions, julienned gingers and drizzled with shallot oil.

Went across the street to the 24hrs coffee shop to order Singapore Fried Noodles (星洲米粉) and Hor Fun (河粉) from the tze char (煮炒) stall. The first is fried bee hoon or rice vermicelli while the latter is broad flat rice noodle.
I took the easy way to dinner and opted for Economy Rice (菜饭) with this big piece of savoury pork chop, crispy ikan bilis & crunchy peanuts and kang kong (water spinach) stir-fry over steamed rice.

No, this is not from the vegetarian rice stall but Fried Bee Tai Bak (米筛目/老鼠粉) or silver needle noodle from the economy rice stall. I added a dish of sambal spicy squid to my takeaway breakfast.
For sis, a piece of sweet & sour pork chop with stir-fry Preserved Sichuan Vegetable (榨菜/四川菜) with minced pork over white rice. Mum had the Bak Chor Bee Hoon Soup (肉脞米粉汤) or minced pork rice vermicelli soup with minced pork, pork balls, slices of pork and pig’s liver.

One of mum’s favourite Singapore Fried Noodles (星洲米粉) dish is available in many countries around the world sharing the same name but differ in how it is cooked or the ingredients/condiments used.
I went for Economy Rice (经济菜饭) as I can choose the dishes I like. Here I picked stewed eggplant, sweet & savoury crispy ikan bilis & peanuts with fish nuggets in dark soya sauce reduction over white rice for sis. I chose egg tofu, stewed potato slices and a herbal chicken drumstick for my own.

Mum bought herself braised Chicken Feet Bee Hoon (rice vermicelli) dry style. The chicken feet (鸡脚/鸡爪) or phoenix claws (凤爪) are deep-fried then braised till tender soft. For me, she chose to pack steamed egg custard, stir-fried cabbage and prawn paste chicken from the economy rice stall.
