I'm worried about electronic waste, e-waste recycling, and such loss of resources.
That's real. For what it's worth, I think it's something we're going to get a LOT better at. The raw materials - and even partially depleted materials that can be downcycled - are too valuable to be left forever.
Tip for anyone worried about e-waste or looking to be more environmentally conscious: Whenever I have something electronic that dies (this includes batteries, power cords, string lights, and vapes), I stick it in an out-of-the-way drawer, and then once every year or two, I bring it all to either an e-waste recycling place or an e-waste disposal place (which, my understanding is most e-waste disposal places do a lot of materials reclamation as well, though if I'm wrong someone please correct me). I just look online to find a place.
Sometimes it's a bit of a drive, but it's so worth it. I encourage others to do the same!
Anyway, here's some headlines about e-waste to hopefully lift your spirits:
^That's Western Australia, not Washington state.

How can RideBoom leverage customer segmentation to tailor its pricing strategy for different user groups?
Here are some ways RideBoom can leverage customer segmentation to tailor its pricing strategy for different user groups:
Demographic Segmentation: RideBoom can segment its customers based on factors like age, income, and location. This can help them offer different pricing options tailored to the needs and willingness to pay of each demographic group. For example, they could offer discounted rates for students or seniors, while charging higher prices for business travelers. Behavioral Segmentation: RideBoom can analyze customer usage patterns, such as frequency of rides, preferred ride types (e.g. economy vs. premium), and peak vs. off-peak usage. This can inform dynamic pricing strategies that adjust rates based on demand, rewarding loyal/frequent riders with discounts while charging higher prices during peak hours or for last-minute bookings. [1] Psychographic Segmentation: RideBoom can segment customers based on their lifestyle, values, and priorities. This could involve offering specialized packages or add-ons tailored to different customer segments, such as eco-conscious riders, families, or nightlife enthusiasts. Pricing can be adjusted accordingly to match the preferences of each group. [2] Tiered Pricing: RideBoom can implement a tiered pricing structure with different service levels and corresponding prices. This could include basic economy rides, premium rides with additional features, and even luxury options. Customers can then choose the level of service and pricing that best fits their needs and budget. [3] Loyalty Programs: By offering loyalty programs, RideBoom can segment customers based on their engagement and reward the most valuable users with exclusive pricing benefits, such as discounted subscription plans or credits for frequent riders. This can help increase customer retention and lifetime value. [3] Overall, RideBoom can leverage a combination of these customer segmentation strategies to develop a more nuanced and effective pricing approach that caters to the diverse needs and preferences of its user base, ultimately driving increased revenue and customer satisfaction.

Just a sneaky post before the short.
I love how we've all decided in headcanon that Blitz drives M&M to and from work. Like they don't own their own car or just live close enough to the office to walk.
M&M, eco conscious queens carpooling with their caring boss lol.

Help! My Mother-In-Law Buys A New Outfit Every Time She Pours Jet Fuel on Chilean Sea Bass and Throws Their Carcasses, Flaming, Into the Rainforests from the Open Belly of Her Private Plane
Care and Feeding, Slate, 1 May 2023:
Dear Care and Feeding, My husband and I have two children (2 years and 6 months). We recently moved back to my husband’s hometown to pursue a career opportunity for me. My husband has been home with the kids but was just offered a job. We found a daycare, but it can only take the kids three days a week right now (we’re on waitlists for full-time, but it seems like it could be months or more before we find two full-time spots). My mother-in-law has generously offered to watch the kids for the other two days. Overall, she is a lovely, responsible woman, but we have some significant value differences around environmental issues and I’m not sure how to navigate them. Our household focuses heavily on environmental awareness. We drive electric cars, we compost, we limit our air conditioning, we limit our flying, we eat all leftovers, we avoid plastics whenever possible, and we buy exclusively secondhand clothing. My mother-in-law is a big fan of consumption. Her house is full of plastics. She throws away whatever is left on her plate at the end of a meal, she keeps her house so cold in the summer that I need a sweater and she drives a minivan. I’m concerned about the message it sends to the kids if we stick to our values, except when to do so would be inconvenient. How do I bridge our two very different lifestyles going forward? —Environmentalist Mama in Limbo
Dear Environmentalist Mama,
I'm not sure how you can describe a person who air-conditions her home and drives a minivan as "lovely" and "responsible" but I will assume that this planet-hating harpy has gripped you so tightly in her environmentally irresponsible talons that you cannot see the wildfire-ridden forest for the trees (which she is personally cutting down for fun and profit). Do not let yourself be hoodwinked by promises of familial love and generous offers of free child care, as if these things matter more than assiduously composting! This woman is a monster who is single-handedly destroying the only earth your precious babies have to live on. Imagine the tragedies that will unfold if your children experience a loving connection with a person who purchases items made of plastic? They could come to believe that other humans are whole people with their own interior lives and decision-making apparatuses and values instead of ugly nasty baddies who dare to oppose Mommy's One True And Only Way?
You simply cannot bridge two lifestyles as different as the two you describe here. On the one hand, we have your blameless and perfect eco-conscious little household of brave, Dumpster-diving Oliver Twists, and on the other hand, we have an ethically compromised, unscrupulous, indefensibly ignorant shitbird who probably barbecues her factory-farmed meats over asbestos tiles and flies to Australia to distribute the ashes over the Great Barrier Reef. If Planet Earth does not spin out into an apocalyptic ball of climate disaster by the time your children are old enough to be knifing their peers over tire fires for their share of rat rations, it will be because your uniquely virtuous family had the moral fortitude to drive an electric car and limit your flying. After all, electricity comes from magical climate-neutral fairies and the jet fuel industry is waiting with bated breath for the day that you ground your family and send an international behemoth into wholesale free-fall.
If there is one guaranteed way forward through the climate crisis, it is to silo ourselves into individual categories of "good people" who use paper straws (like you! you are so good!) and "amoral reprobates" (such as your mother-in-law, who sucks!) who do not. The very future of humanity depends on demonizing and shaming other people until they behave as we want them to, privileging individual actions over collective resistance to and accountability for the worst global offenders, and rejecting community-building opportunities in favor of being the only best good person ever.
Build no bridge with this woman! She would probably just drive over it with her minivan, and then the blood of billions will be on your hands.

The Trash Jar is fucking bullshit.
I'm not the first to say it and I sure as fucking hell won't be the last. It's great to aspire to perfection, to the idea of fitting your trash for a year in the confines of a single jar, but:
That can come at the expense of the bigger picture, such as driving a long distance to get to a bulk foods store instead of walking to the local supermarket right around the corner and getting the best options there, thereby creating greater carbon emissions than you otherwise would have.
This can lead to questionable additions to your recycling and compost bins, knowing that items will end up in a landfill eventually, but taint a load of recyclables and compost on their way there.
This can alienate family and friends who might find the idea of a zero waste lifestyle too intimidating from such a daunting ask.
The individuals are not the ones creating the most trash. Do you think Amazon fits all their waste in a single jar, or even cares to try? Of course not!
Putting all your focus into this stupid fucking jar diverts your attention from efforts than can have a much greater impact! Lobbying for eco conscious efforts in your local area, petitioning for plastic bans and environmentally friendly fishing practices, establishing a buy nothing group, or perhaps a compost pile, in your neighborhood, these and other efforts are all things that can really make a big difference- if you're not distracted by a fucking mason jar instead.
Remember, zero waste doesn't mean that you have to create absolutely no trash- it means bettering the environment by causing less unnecessary waste on both an individual and societal effort. And that means little steps, one thing at a time.
Not a fucking jar.

Hi! I've been reading BMTL again and I have quick q- in BMTL, how did Dan and Amy 'plan' their wedding? Was it a spur of the moment thing? Was it Dan or Amy's idea to do it during Jonah's announcement? :)
Hey! I'm so glad you are rereading and thank so much for sending in an ask! I love BMTL asks!
Dan and Amy's wedding is one of those things I made up in the super early days of writing--like literally when I was thinking of article scraps for that first chapter--and I knew I wanted their wedding to be very untraditional and kind of spontaneous...and then later I was like "sh*t, how does this actually work in practice." So I've spent a lot of time thinking about their wedding, haha.
The way it goes in my mind is that Dan and Amy (and Cassie) are on their way to court an eccentric lumber multi-millionaire in Maine who demands that people who visit him arrive in the most eco-conscious way possible (he's one of those rich people who get very rich off some exploitative industry and then feels "bad" about it)
So Dan and Amy are driving up in an electric car instead of flying and their car has some sort of malfunction (it's probably a Tesla ☠️) and they get stranded in some cute little touristy town on the coast of New Hampshire. The car can't be fixed quickly and they find themselves on the town's main street, feeling very annoyed and wondering what to do. Dan and Amy are in the middle of bickering, of course - maybe they're sitting on a bench in the town square or something. Dan takes a look at their surroundings and sort of processes how picturesque it all is, and then he looks at Amy and Cassie who are probably both ignoring him and has a genius idea that he and Amy should get married. It's partly driven from the fact that they are stuck and (unusually) don't have anything else to do in the moment, but also from the deep, abiding knowledge that even if they both drive him crazy, there's nobody he'd rather be stranded with anywhere than Amy and Cassie (plus, they've been "engaged" at this point for quite some time). He doesn't remember until later that Jonah is going to announce his presidential campaign on Youtube or whatever, but it's an extra cherry on top of the whole day.
So they are able to pull the whole thing together really quick - they get a marriage license and Dan sends Amy to the local shops to get a white dress and he rustles up a photographer and a ring and Amy gets a bouquet from the florist and voilà! They get married and take many photographs. Amy is relieved they get the whole thing done in an afternoon and also that she doesn't have to deal with her family, but of course she also finds it secretly romantic that Dan had the idea so spontaneously. Cassie enjoys getting to wear a white dress and tearing Amy's bouquet to pieces afterwards.
(I just looked at the first chapter and apparently I specified Portsmouth, NH as the place where they get married, which is not really a small town but probably feels small to cosmopolitan Dan. The Portsmouth courthouse is hideous though so they definitely do not get married there. Maybe Dan gets someone to marry them somewhere more picturesque...I could see him showing up at the local party headquarters and hounding some volunteers. Or maybe Portsmouth is where all the local reporters rush because they don't necessarily know where to go. Maybe I need to update that part of the chapter a bit, haha.)
also, right before they get married, Dan tells Amy he killed a dog. she's just relieved that he's not confessing to being a serial killer.
and they all lived happily ever after!

Hempcrete is a bio-based building material helping to power the drive to net-zero, but how can a product developed a millennia ago help tackle today's environmental challenges? Euronews Culture gets down and dirty with a material that has Europe’s eco-conscious architects high with excitement. It really doesn’t look like much, but hempcrete is the green building material that’s got eco-savvy homeowners and architects excited by its potential to be a sustainable alternative to environmentally expensive bricks and concrete. It is made using a carefully calibrated mixture of hemp shiv – the dried inner core of the hemp plant – mixed with lime and water. But although hempcrete seems like a very modern building material, it has a history stretching back over 1,500 years. Hemp plaster from the sixth century still lines the walls of the UNESCO-designated Ellora Caves in India, and hemp mortar has been discovered in ancient Merovingian bridge abutments in France – which is fitting, as France was at the forefront of the 1980s drive to modernise hempcrete and introduce it to a new generation. [...] Impeccable environmental credentials Despite the challenges, hempcrete’s undeniable environmental credentials have meant it was a case of when, rather than if, it would muscle its way into the mainstream building trade. Liam Donohoe, chief operating officer at UK Hempcrete – a Derbyshire-based company designing and supplying materials to building projects using hempcrete – tells Euronews Culture that sustainability plays a part in every area of the product’s development. “Hemp, unlike conventional crops, doesn’t require a lot of fertilisers or pesticides to protect it as it grows. The type of fibrous hemp usually used in construction is a tall plant that grows quickly and so can be cropped and planted quite close together, naturally suppressing weeds," he says. “I’m not saying it takes no energy to produce hempcrete, it does. But when you compare it to man-made insulation and wall infills, it has an unlimited life span and the primary ingredient is a renewable crop that costs a lot less energy and carbon to produce.”

The Circular Economy: A Path to Sustainability for Large Conglomerates Like Chiripal Group
Tumblr media
The adoption of a circular economy by large conglomerates such as the Chiripal Group represents a crucial step toward sustainability. This approach not only redefines business operations but also positively impacts communities and the environment.
Understanding the Circular Economy
The circular economy is designed to be regenerative, aiming to reduce dependency on finite resources. Its principles focus on eliminating waste, keeping products in circulation, and supporting natural systems.
Why Large Corporations Must Lead
Large groups like Chiripal have the reach and resources to champion circular practices. By adopting sustainable strategies, they can inspire widespread industry change and promote eco-conscious practices.
Key Circular Economy Strategies
Product Life Extension: Companies can reduce waste through product repair, refurbishment, and remanufacturing. For instance, Grew, a Chiripal subsidiary, promotes sustainability by ensuring longevity and reusability in solar panels.
Resource Efficiency: By optimizing resources, companies reduce their environmental impact. Nandan Terry and Chiripal Polyfilms focus on efficient design and production. Nandan Terry, for example, reuses 98% of water in production, significantly cutting fresh water demand.
Circular Supply Chains: Shifting to circular supply chains involves recycling and reusing materials, creating a closed-loop system that minimizes waste.
Community Engagement: Engaging local communities in circular practices creates job opportunities and supports social responsibility. Chiripal’s CSR initiatives, such as the "Chiripal Mirchi Green Yodha" campaign, emphasize tree planting and e-waste management. Nandan Denim supports health, education, and environmental projects, while the Happiness Reserves Foundation fosters STEM education through the World STEM and Robotics Olympiad.
Policy Advocacy: Large companies can influence policies supporting circular economy principles by collaborating with governments and stakeholders.
Integrating Social Impact
By combining social initiatives with circular economy practices, companies can address systemic challenges, create jobs, and support community health, thus contributing to a more sustainable and equitable economy.
Conclusion
The circular economy offers strategic advantages, driving sustainability and profitability. For conglomerates like Chiripal, adopting circular practices means taking a lead in climate action and conservation while proving that large-scale industry can align with ecological goals.
This transition to a circular economy not only supports a sustainable future but also establishes a responsible business landscape that benefits both companies and communities.

Unmasking Sustainability Laundering: A Deep Dive into Deceptive Practices
Tumblr media
In the quest for a more sustainable world, transparency and authenticity are crucial. However, not all companies play by these rules. Sustainability laundering has emerged as a deceptive practice where businesses falsely present themselves as environmentally responsible to attract eco-conscious consumers. Understanding and combating this practice is essential to promote genuine sustainability.
What is Sustainability Laundering?
Sustainability laundering, also known as greenwashing, involves companies making misleading claims about their environmental practices. These companies portray themselves as green without making substantial efforts to minimize their environmental impact. This practice not only deceives consumers but also undermines the efforts of genuinely sustainable businesses.
Common Tactics of Sustainability Laundering
Businesses employ various tactics to create a facade of sustainability. These include vague or exaggerated claims, lack of transparency, and selective disclosure of information. For instance, a company might highlight a minor eco-friendly initiative while ignoring its broader, environmentally harmful practices. Such tactics mislead consumers into believing that the company is more sustainable than it truly is.
The Impact of Sustainability Laundering
The consequences of sustainability laundering are far-reaching. It erodes consumer trust, as people become skeptical of green claims. Additionally, it diverts attention and resources away from truly sustainable companies, making it harder for them to compete. This practice also hampers the overall progress towards global sustainability goals by creating a false sense of achievement.
Identifying Genuine Sustainability
To avoid falling for sustainability laundering, consumers and stakeholders must be vigilant. Here are some ways to identify genuine sustainability efforts:
Transparency: Look for companies that provide detailed and transparent information about their sustainability practices. Genuine businesses are open about their processes, challenges, and achievements.
Third-Party Certifications: Reliable certifications from recognized organizations can validate a company's sustainability claims. These certifications ensure that the company meets specific environmental standards.
Comprehensive Reporting: Authentic sustainable companies often publish comprehensive sustainability reports that cover various aspects of their environmental impact, not just isolated initiatives.
Consistency: Consistent and long-term commitment to sustainability is a key indicator. Companies that have integrated sustainable practices into their core operations are more likely to be genuine.
Promoting True Sustainability
Combating sustainability laundering requires a collective effort from consumers, businesses, and regulators. Consumers should demand transparency and hold companies accountable for their claims. Businesses must prioritize genuine sustainability over short-term gains, integrating eco-friendly practices into their core strategies. Regulators can play a crucial role by setting stringent standards and penalizing deceptive practices.
Conclusion
Sustainability laundering undermines the credibility of the green movement and hampers progress towards a sustainable future. By understanding and recognizing this practice, we can make informed decisions and support companies that are truly committed to environmental responsibility. Together, we can promote genuine sustainability and drive meaningful change for our planet.
