We are talking about a hybrid version As Carscoops writes, Xiaomi is working not only on an electric car but also on a hybrid version with an extended range. Xiaomi is expected to offer two versions of its electric car called Modena. The first will use BYD's Blade battery with a 400V architecture, while the flagship model will use CATL's 101kWh Qilin batteries with the same 800V architecture. Buyers will also be offered a hybrid version with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine or a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, which works in conjunction with a large battery pack. There are no details about the power reserve yet. The Xiaomi Modena car will receive a 1.5-liter engine [caption id="attachment_64785" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Xiaomi Modena car[/caption] It's only been two years since Xiaomi first announced its intention to launch an electric car. Images of the car leaked online earlier this year, and local media reported that Xiaomi is currently producing 50 prototypes every week at its Beijing plant. Xiaomi is creating Modena as a competitor to the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal. It is expected to cost around $27,000 in China. It was previously reported that Xiaomi is recruiting development engineers with experience in working on extended-range EV (EREV) systems for electrified models.

Onsemi M3S EliteSiC MOSFET allows car charger to upgrade to 800V battery architecture
Ever since EVs took hold in the automotive market, EV makers have been chasing higher-power drivetrains, larger battery capacities and shorter charging times. To meet customer demand and extend driving range, electric vehicle manufacturers continue to increase the battery capacity of their vehicles. However, a larger battery means longer charging times.
To address both charging time and performance issues, many EV platforms are migrating from current 400V battery packs to 800V battery packs. When the vehicle is in drive mode, the higher available voltage can be used to increase motor power output or improve system efficiency while maintaining the same power level.
SiC-based components have proven to be advantageous over IGBT components for higher switching frequency applications. SiC technology also offers design advantages for the development of 800V batteries. It can reduce the size of the OBC system and improve the overall efficiency from generation to drive.
Following the successful launch of the first-generation 1200V EliteSiC M1 MOSFET, ON Semiconductor recently released the second-generation 1200V EliteSiC M3 MOSFET, focusing on optimizing switching performance. M3S products include 13/22/30/40/70mΩ in discrete packages for TO247-4L and D2PAK−7L. NVH4L022N120M3S is a MOSFET that meets the requirements of automotive regulations. The on-resistance RDS(ON) at 1200V is at least 22mΩ.
The ON Semiconductor team has extensively tested the key feature advantages of the M3S over the M1. M3S (NTH4L022N120M3S) requires less total gate charge QG (TOT) than M1 (NTH4L020N120SC1), which greatly reduces the sink and source current of the gate driver (as shown in Figure 1). In the case of the default VGS(OP)=+18V, the charge of M3S is 135nC, compared with the previous M1, the FOM (quality factor) in RDS(ON)*QG(TOT) is reduced by 44%, indicating that in Only 56% of the switch gate charge is required for the same on-resistance RDS(ON) devices.
Increasing the switching frequency helps designers reduce the size of energy storage components such as inductors, transformers, and capacitors, thereby reducing system volume. The more compact size and higher power density enable smaller package sizes for OBC systems, giving engineers more opportunities to distribute more weight elsewhere in the vehicle. In addition, operating at a higher voltage also reduces the current required throughout the vehicle, reducing the cost of cables between the power system, battery and OBC.

Today's electric car charging stations for DC usually operate at about 400V. This is equivalent to a charging moment for a 400 km range of about 80 minutes with a typical charging power of about 50 kW. Porsche new Taycan has completely shattered this EV charging capacity. Using the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, the Porsche charging structure can divide its 800V throughput into two 400V plugs. Once the voltage level is increased to 800V, the charge time for the same range is reduced to less than 20 minutes.
Porsche initially announced that the Taycan would be compatible with the maximum output of 350 kW from Electrify America, although the German carmaker chose to adjust this rate to 270 kW, citing current battery cell chemistry cannot securely support higher energy concentrations. However, even at 270 kW, the ultra-fast DC chargers from the Porsche Taycan and Electrify America still represent the highest EV charging rate on the market today.
Both the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the Porsche Taycan Turbo are equipped with two electric motors, one on the front and one on the back axle, a rear axle-mounted two-speed transmission, and an 800-volt architecture.
Extensive testing between Electrify America and PCNA helped guarantee this first ultra-fast charging design. This effort paves the way for many electric cars from a multitude of automakers that will be able to charge DC quickly to benefit from the extensive, high-power nationwide network of the company in the future.
Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche, says: "To construct a fast-charging network, we are in touch with other producers and vendors around the globe. Everyone's got the same need. It sounds simple, but it's difficult to get the details agreed. We already have the technical idea that is evident. Even with Teslas, it can operate with an adapter." Even Tesla's CEO Elon Musk appreciated about Porsche's Taycan's performance and appreciated it to be a good car.
For its portion, Tesla presently uses a network of 150 kWh superchargers V2 stations, although the firm has started rolling out a V3 superchargers network of 250 kWh. The new, more potent V3 Superchargers from Tesla, along with the new, high-powered EV chargers from Electrify America, are entering a fresh era of super-fast EV charging. EV owners across the board spend less time in charging stations during lengthy journeys with quicker charging times, and more time behind the wheel, reducing general travel time. According to Tesla's press release on March 2019 concerning the new high-powered superchargers, the maximum levels of 250 kWh per vehicle will allow holders of the Long Range Model to charge 375 miles in just 5 minutes.

Huawei features 95KTL string inverter at Solar Power International
SPONSORED CONTENT:
Bates Marshall
By: Bates Marshall, Vice President, General Manager at Huawei FusionSolar of North America
What applications or markets is the 95KTL suited for? The Huawei 95KTL is the largest string inverter currently from Huawei, but it is not simply just “a larger string inverter from Huawei”. It is a breakthrough that delivers provably superior economics to the utility-scale market compared to any alternative in the market – central or string.
The power density that Huawei 95KTL has achieved without the use of external fan cooling is a world record and is the result of the company’s sustained and intense focus on power electronics research and development. The Huawei 95KTL is the only string inverter in its power class to utilize natural cooling technology instead of external fans, delivering lowest cost of ownership through reduced O&M expenses.
Why is this solution more beneficial to the developer and EPC than a central inverter? The Huawei 95KTL string inverter supports Smart O&M and is safe and reliable with maximum efficiency:
We made it smart with: -6 MPPTs for versatile adaptions to different layouts -12 strings intelligent monitoring and fast trouble-shooting -Power Line Communication (PLC) supported -Smart I-V Curve Diagnosis supported
It is efficient with: -Maximum efficiency of 99.0% -CEC efficiency of 98.5% -800V output voltage and decrease 75% AC wire loss versus 400V
It is safe with: -DC AFCI compliant to UL 1699B Type I -Type II surge arresters for both DC and AC -Residual Current Monitoring Unit (RCMU) integrated inside
And it is reliable with: -Natural cooling technology -Fuse free design -Protection rating of NEMA Type 4X
How does Huawei test its inverters? Huawei tests its inverters in a specialized R&D testing center that very few large companies could attempt to create in house. Multiple extreme environment tests mimicking -40 degrees Celsius, high altitude, hot, sandy environments and lightning strikes are performed. For example, we actively seek to trigger lightning by launching a rocket into a lightning storm with a gold wire that goes down into the inverter. We can then study the effects and engineer inverters to withstand them.
What are some highlights of the last year for Huawei? This last year has been remarkable for Huawei. IHS Markit and GTM both listed us as Number 1 for global shipments in 2016 and we made breakthroughs in U.S. solar market with the support from our partners and customers.

Production Ready Aston Martin Rapide E Makes Debut
Aston Martin Lagonda has revealed the final production-ready iteration of its first all-electric production car, with the spectacular Rapide E making its world debut at China’s Auto Shanghai motor show.
Unveiled by Aston Martin Executive Vice President & Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, Rapide E is a pivotal model for the luxury marque. Following the success of previous special-edition models, including Aston Martin Vulcan, the Vanquish Zagato family and DB4 GT Continuation, Rapide E continues to deliver a superior level of performance, craftmanship and exclusivity, while also propelling Aston Martin into the all-electric realm.
The first car to be built at Aston Martin’s state-of-the-art St Athan production facility – the brand’s Home of Electrification – Rapide E represents a pioneering first step towards achieving the company’s wider electrification strategy and the successful fruition of Lagonda – the world’s first zero-emission luxury brand. A special edition with a production run strictly limited to 155 units, Rapide E has been developed in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE).
Shown for the first time here in Shanghai today, Aston Martin’s design and engineering teams have worked in partnership to extract the optimal aerodynamic performance available from the Rapide’s elegant form. Traditional metal vanes give way to a striking honeycomb front grille. With lower cooling requirements demanded of the EV powertrain, Aston Martin’s aerodynamic engineers have been given the freedom to optimize the aperture of the frontal area, minimising airflow through the car’s body, improving the car’s aerodynamic efficiency and increasing range as a result.
A re-designed underfloor streamlines airflow from the front splitter right the way through to Rapide E’s new larger rear diffuser – a feature that is now wholly dedicated to aero efficiency due to the removal of the exhaust system required before. The model’s forged aluminium aerodynamic wheels – shod with bespoke low rolling-resistance Pirelli P-Zero tyres – have also been re-designed to give greater efficiency, without compromising brake cooling capability. The sum of these changes gives Rapide E’s aerodynamic package an 8% improvement over the previous internal combustion model.
Inside and out, Rapide E is equipped with the materials and technology befitting of the marque’s first EV model. Gone are the analogue displays of the past. A 10” digital display now sits in their place, delivering all key information to the driver while on the move, including the battery’s state of charge, current motor power levels, regenerative performance and a real-time energy consumption meter. Swathes of carbon fibre have been deployed throughout, assisting in delivering the strict weight targets set by Aston Martin’s engineering team from the outset.
Extending the experience beyond the car, a dedicated app allows key information from the car to be remotely monitored. This powerful dashboard displays remaining range, battery status, and time to charge, as well as allowing navigation destinations to be sent from the app to the car for easy route planning. The car’s parking spot can also be seen via the app, with walking directions provided to help re-locate it in busy locations. Finally, the health and status of Rapide E can also be tracked from the app, providing reminders such as when a key service is due.
Throughout the development process, the combined AML/WAE engineering team first focussed their efforts on finding packaging solutions for the battery system and motors within the Rapide’s architecture before working to achieve effective cooling of the batteries and motors.
Rapide E is powered by an 800V electrical architecture battery – encased in carbon fibre and Kevlar casing – with a 65kWh installed capacity using over 5600 lithium-ion 18650 format cylindrical cells. This bespoke battery pack lies where the original 6.0-litre V12, gearbox and fuel tank were located, with the 800V system allowing for more efficient charging and greatly improved thermal characteristics over existing electrical architectures. This battery system powers two rear mounted electric motors producing a combined target output of just over 610PS and a colossal 950Nm of torque.
Rapide E’s range is over 200 miles under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), while the model is capable of charging at a rate of 1851,2 miles of range per hour using a typical 400V 50kW charger. However, the car’s 800V high-voltage battery system enables faster charging of 3101,2 miles of range per hour, using an 800V outlet delivering 100kW or higher. For destination charging, the car also features an industry-leading high-power AC on-board charger capable of recharging the battery in as little as 3 hours.
Top speed for Rapide E is 155mph, with a sub-4.0 second 0-60mph time and a 50-70mph time of just 1.5 seconds. These figures are not restricted to a narrow window of battery charge or climatic conditions, instead, thanks to the cutting-edge 800V architecture, the Rapide E will deliver its performance in a consistent and repeatable way as would be expected from a traditional Aston Martin product. This includes the ability to drive a full lap of the Nürburgring with no performance derating of the battery or the motors.
Rapide E also enhances the feel, character and delivery of the V12-engined recently acclaimed Rapide AMR, thanks to careful attention paid to the tuning of both the electric powertrain and the chassis across three driving modes – GT, Sport and Sport + – which are selected for both the powertrain and handling. The rear-wheel drive Rapide E’s twin electric motors drive through a Limited-Slip Differential, which combined with a revised spring and damper rates, ensures the pure handling characteristics of the petrol-powered Rapide AMR are retained.
Speaking ahead of Rapide E’s Shanghai debut, Dr Andy Palmer, President and Group CEO, Aston Martin Lagonda, commented: “Unveiling the Rapide E will be a huge moment for Aston Martin. As our first all-electric production car, it is a truly historic step. One that signals Aston Martin is prepared for the huge challenge of an environmentally responsible and sustainable future. As a car company we cannot afford to passively allow that future to come to us; we have to actively chase it. Only by doing this can we learn and prepare, but also preserve those things we love as drivers and car enthusiasts. That’s why it was so important to me that in embracing EV technology we should not let go of those unique qualities that define an Aston Martin. I believe Rapide E embodies that desire and paves the way for a hugely exciting future.”
Rapide E is available to order now, with prices available on application.
