Claudia, one of your friends, invited you to attend to her beach volley match. The match is held indoor so, given the fact that its summer and in this country summer is also very humid, temperatures are going to be torrid. Beside this fact you're still quite surprised to see that the majority of the players are playing naked, females too (in this parallel univers human are not ashamed by their own bodies). After all sweating is the best way to cool down. She's quite skinny but look really good with that blue bikini, you always liked her so, secretely, you're very happy to see her playing covered just with air. Given the fact that the playground is going to be free the whole day, organizers decided to complete the tournament without skippying to next day.
Some hours have passed and she has played for a lot of time now. Room temperature went higher than 36°C for the whole last matches and now Claudia looks pretty torn. She's always been a warrior, someone who don't surrender easily but all that jumping in this particular condition had an effect on her too. She's covered by sweat, her skin has assumed a reddish tone and her panting has become so deep anyone can clearly hear her fast inspirations and exales. The thing that tunrs on a light in your mind though is the fact that her entire upper body is rhythmically shaking like it's thrusted by a sort of internal earthquake. You suddenly realize that you recently activated a medical app on your phone developped at the laboratory where you work that makes possible medical analises through the phone camera thanks to experimental sensors placed in the camera. You activate the app and feel pretty lifted up by the fact you already added her profile. A thin ensamble of laser rays, almost invisible, is projeced towards her and the selected target orgal (obviously Claudia's heart) becomes visible on the screen. Her heart is beating like crazy, not only considering the pace but also the strenght of each beat, the app says her heart is beating at around 195 bpm but it's probably even higher. It's something that is completely out of any safety zone for someone who is 34 years old... and not even a younger person should push its heart like this. The device can also work as a digital stethoscope and by wearing headphones to listen to her you remained schoked. Her blood is pushed so violently that it's making strange wooshing-like noises by rubbing against her heart internal structures, sounds that almost cover up her slamming valves. Suddenly the software gives a diagnosis: High cardiac risk- probability of a sudden cardiac arrest of 89%-potentially lethal arrhythias occurring. By looking at her detected heart electrical activities, her organ is so over-stimulated that PVCs and VTACs burst are already present. You know exactly what to do, Claudia's life has an 89% probability to end in the next few minutes and it's increasing. You decide to get up from your seat and run towards the referee to show him the analysis of your device. One of the players' heart is going to stop very soon.
A second before you move, on the ecg a strange beat appears and suddenly Claudia's heart interrupts any activity, it doesn't even fibrillate, it just ceases to beat as silence arises from your headphones. Terrified you see her taking a couple of deep breath, the ball she was holding fell on the ground and her left hand is placed in between her bare breasts... after a moment she collapses on the ground.
You have always wanted to place your hand on her chest to feel her heartbeat but now you have to do this to make it beat again. CPR has to be started immediately.

Top surgery today. I am the first up today and my surgeon begins in an hour. I am going to be having top surgery in an hour.
I was so scared last night but genuinely after I used the magic eraser tool in my photos app to see sort of what it would look like, I have been doing completely fine.
I am not looking forward to the drains. It is the same as with piercings, I have things about having things piercing through my body, but I'd much rather have it than not.
Sorry post interrupted, they're showing food on the TV in the waiting room. Cruel. Cruel
But anyway, I also may get stressed about going to sleep, as I also have Things about that. But according to my friend who had his like 5 weeks ago, I should get something to make me a bit more relaxed before the anaesthetic. And it's not the same issue as sleeping where I get stressed about it then I can't, I can. I don't need to try.
And I'm not looking forward to 6 weeks at least off of my hobbies. I'm very physically active.
Post interrupted again by having an ECG to make sure everything is alright, due to the POTS.
It is now around. 45 minutes until my surgery. Although I am likely to be collected in about half an hour.
I thought I'd be terrified because I truly was last night. Well and truly. Honestly I was wondering if I'd be able to go through with it.
But I am going to.
I am going to be fine.
At least it happens only once in your life.
After this I'll have no more tits.
Oh my gods by the time I would have had lunch at work today if I had gone, I will be titless.
This is it it's happening. It's finally happening. I'm going to cry.
And I'm going to be okay. I have chronic pain and illness and handle it all so well, this surgery is going to be nothing to me.
My friend who had his about 5 weeks ago will be there when I get discharged, so will my mom.
I'm not even nervous I'm ready.
I'm so excited.
This is it.
This is it.
Also, I have a friend with me for now.

F1 and Biometrics
Biometric gloves came into play in F1 in 2018 to give medical teams immediate access to important information regarding driver conditions after an incident. It allows for vitals to be measured before, at the time of an incident and after the crash until they are rescued and more advanced monitoring is able to be applied. It is also a big help if a driver is involved in a crash that means they are not accessible straight away or cannot be visualized for monitoring so this allows teams to get immediate access to this information.
According to the FIA website, this was a difficulty by medical teams when Carlos Sainz crashed in the 2015 Russian GP where he hit the barrier head-on at 153km/h (roughly 95mph). The first row of the barrier was resting on top of him, so medical teams had to wait for this to be removed before they had access to him. Thankfully he wasn’t hurt during this crash, but medical teams didn’t know this initially as this technology wasn’t available and being used.
The sensors were basically made custom to F1 drivers. Regular sensors had not been fire tested and were not comfortable enough for the drivers to wear for long races. They use Bluetooth technology and can send data within a 500m and are powered by a small battery that drivers charge before races.
Drivers gloves have a 3mm sensor that is stitched into the palm of the fabric and monitors their vital signs during races. They measure pulse oximetry which measures the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood as well as drivers pulse rates. Obviously if a driver has an injury that is affecting their breathing, this will show in the saturations that would decline rapidly. Having this technology allows physiological readings and biometrics to be continuously monitored throughout the race from start to finish. Data from the sensor transmits to an iPhone app and gives medical crews remote and advance information on the driver’s condition. The small biometric readers are flexible and fire resistant up to 1,800 degrees Celsius (3,272 degrees Fahrenheit) for 22 seconds.
In the future there are even plans to implement sensors for respiratory rate and temperature to further monitor drivers which will not only enhance safety features but allow teams and drivers to monitor performance better.
OMP, an equipment supplier, has been developing wearable biometric monitoring systems since the introduction of the biometric sensors in 2019. An undershirt equipped with sensors and a measurement unit would transmit and record biometric data allowing for real-time monitoring of health through ECG and thoracic expansion. This would allow monitoring of drivers heart rhythms and breathing rate which would not only benefit medical teams in the case of an incident but also help identify stress, fatigue and any alteration in conditions. This would be useful considering the amount of stress drivers have been put through in the past in hot countries for example Saudi Arabia GP 2023 when many drivers retired, had to be taken to medical, threw up in their helmets or passed out after the race.
TV crews can also display biometric data during broadcasts to show the physical condition of a driver as they battle on track. However, there have been questions about the ethics and use of biometrics and why can’t we as an audience see drivers heart rates etc on screen if this data is being constantly collected. The FIA has strict guidelines about the use of raw biometric data. Section 2.4 of the FIA Guidelines for the Collection and Usage of Biometric Data in Motorsport, states that the use of biometric data can be used for more than just medical and performance monitoring and can be used for entertainment and marketing purposes but only if it is changed from raw data into a variable to protect the private health information of the driver. The FIA won’t allow the use of biometric data to be publicly available in the original form/ measurement unless the driver provides informed consent.
Essentially, driver onboard vitals are likely not to be available live due to strict laws on data protection and sharing health related information about drivers as it is protected health information. In the case of an accident or emergency, data is not allowed to be used even if the information is changed to protect the driver unless it is for medical and rescue use and post-accident information.
Sources: (x) (x) (x) (x) (x)
This also led me down a rabbit hole and found another study (it was anonymous but if you’re a sleuth you can probably take a guess at what F1 driver it was) where they monitored his heart rate during qualifying to see what his average was throughout the race to test the cardiovascular strain F1 drivers are put under!

DIY Patient Monitor
It's been a while since I posted! In the last post I presented my DIY wireless ECG. Today, I want to follow up on that post. In the last two years I added more and more consumer medical devices and features to the ECG that one might call it a DIY patient monitor 😀
I recorded myself using it in this video. I deprived myself of oxygen and watched the result on the monitor. See all the alarms going off 🙂
The design is inspired by Philips Intellivue. The alarm sounds I took from their website 😉
In the rest of this post I want to discuss how I came to this result.
Devices
The DIY ECG from last post was a good basis (https://www.tumblr.com/medical89/650543279114469376/diy-wireless-ecg?source=share).
I got a BP with bluetooth capabilities (https://www.medisana.com/en/Health-control/Blood-pressure-monitor/BU-540-connect-Upper-arm-blood-pressure-monitor.html)
And a pulseoximeter with bluetooth (https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005005549153646.html)
I reverse engineered (aka hacked) both of their bluethooth communication to get the live data into my website instead of their apps. I.e., get the BP after it was measured or retrieve the oxygen concentration every second. Then I extended my ECG application and it's web interface to include this information.
Alarms
The application now also includes alarms, just like a real patient monitor. Cyan alarms are triggered if a device is not connected correctly, red alarms if a vital value is outside of its limits!
Buttons
I also wired up the power button on the BP to my ECG so I can start it from the website using the BP button. When entering a number in the text field next to the button, the BP is taken automatically every x seconds 🙂
The shock button is wired up to a TENS unit and can give shocks.
I also made a program that can sync shocks and BP inflates to a video, but that's a story for another day!
Hope this was interesting for you and feel free to contact me to ask for more details 🙂

good: have been drawing a lot in my sketchbook lately, mostly with pencil. do you know how awesome it is to have a sharpener on hand immediately too. making smooth gem-ish shading is very fun and time consuming too, so its a nice way to distract myself. i need to get back into my pixel projects as well- i forgot that aseprite is still technically a steam game so my friend asked me why i have 6000 hours in it (i keep basically all art programs open to have them on hand fast). i want to get watercolor markers or something to make funny things more. i used to draw a lot back in school of course because it was easier than doing the actual work i guess- now i have some block about drawing traditionally where i forget it for a long while and also need to be in a very specific spot for it to be enjoyable (in this case thecorner of the living room couch). ill figure out how to use the scanner by myself at some point
bad: toenail is starting to hurt again, swelling, had a rough time yesterday with my heart blasting in spite of Actually No Anxiety for once and not even having a huge meals, just snacking until dinner (by which point i had weakened considerably but even before that when i had eaten it was like techno in there.) i still have yet to get the long ecg or whatever it is, though i do have a random app with the doctor on the 27th so maybe i can ask for a referral that isnt over an hour away from where i live. the gums of a tooth in the back of my mouth was hurting for a while but seems fine now, wasnt sure what i was gonna do about that so thats good. can go back to brushing normal now. still havent gotten lab orders.
the cats were grooming eachother on the couch a second ago and now theyre getting feisty and bitey and silly so i cant really stay depressed. dreams have been weirdly vivid as of late for better and for worse, even just during naps. makes it even more exhausting. for the past 3 weeks or so ive had a consistent thought whenever ive been stressed of "i need to go curl up in a dirt hole somewhere else", which while not good isnt the worst thing to think at least
2/20/2024, you can type a lot more with an actual keyboard

Babes it's time: 🔪📚🍬 🛼 (these three are so juicy lol)
Ah yes, three.
Lol I will do them all regardless!
🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
Idk if these are the weirdest, but I fondly remember messaging my nurse friend such things as:
can someone hide under a hospital bed
how long does a surgeon have to harvest organs after death? what if they are only braindead and they are still on a respirator?
what is the node situation for an ECG machine
Oh and I asked her a question about drug mixing that had her text back immediately like WHAT DID YOU DO
Ah, good times. When I publish a book she's getting a dedication for sure
📚 ⇢ what's the last thing you wrote down in your notes app?
"Add eow spoilers to filters"
And I have yet to do it lol this is referring to Echoes Of Wisdom I need to add the tag filter here so Im not spoiled. Idk if I will actually play it buuut just to be safe
🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character
This is actually so hard for me and I don't know why. Do I just generally agree with fandom? Do I have too many opinions that cancel each other out? Do I zone out when I see hateful discourse?
Yes.
