Chapter Two

The blades of the evac chopper beat against my ears painfully as I was escorted into it. A headset was placed over my ears to muffle the sound as I looked up to see Soap faintly smiling down at me.

It wasn't connected to the other's comm sets so once they spoke during take off, I couldn't hear a thing. All I could do was wonder if I really trusted these people. I glanced to Ghost as I did, a faint sense of faith settling in my gut. Him rescuing me from that hellhole was enough for that primal connection to click in my brain.

Yes. If I could trust him, I could trust them. They all seemed close anyway. Hard won battles sealing their connection to each other.

The next few hours were agonizing as the chopper landed, and I was brought on to the compound. From ID photos to a full body scan for any tracking devices on my person; it seemed they weren't taking any risks with me.

Gaz and Soap would often give me a sympathetic glance as I was pushed around to each check-in task in a wheel chair as I was still too weak to walk fully.

"We're gonna have you looked at in the med bay, then we will need you to recount some info for us. That alright with you?" Asked Gaz. I nodded, appreciative that he made it seem like I even had a choice.

I sighed heavily, ready for it all to be over. The adrenaline had worn off just enough to make me realize how sleep deprived I really was.

Machines beeped, and faint chatter could be heard throughout the medical building of the compound. I underestimated how stressful the environment would be. My fingernails dug into the arms of the wheelchair as Gaz steered it.

Soap was beside me, Price and Ghost having left to recount the mission and write a report of some sorts, he seemed to notice my fear.

"None's gonna hurt ya, Lass." He assured me as I was wheeled over to a hospital cot. Him and Gaz lifted me onto it as I looked around wide eyed.

"No.." I coughed out, my voice raspy and once again dry. "No.. Doctors..." I strained, trying to move. They both held me in place, Gaz giving me a stern look.

"They're just going to look over your injuries. We will be right here the entire time." He tried to assure me.

I shook my head rapidly. Ghost... I wanted Ghost here. I didn't have time to wonder why my thoughts went to him, I just needed to get free. I struggled against their hold as a woman in a clean white coat pulled back the curtain around my cot.

My breathing grew heavy and the room seemed to spin. My nails dug small crescents into my palms as I tried frantically to break free. I heard voices and felt a hand on my back but the sounds felt like they were underwater.

I saw a white lab coat flash in front of my vision and I bared my fangs, my lips trembling fearfully.

Danger?

Gotta run...

Can't run.

Fight?

No... yes. Fuck

I felt a sharp prick in my neck and turned my head rapidly, biting towards the hand near my face. I heard someone hiss in pain as my teeth broke flesh.

My hair was grabbed, along with my jaw, until I released my hold. My vision blurred and muscles twitched as I struggled.

It all went dark after that.

My dreams melted with reality as I woke and tried to shift in bed. A frown appeared on my lips as I realized I couldn't move my limbs. Fuck.

My eyes flew open as I tried to sit up, the restraints clanging against the metal bars of the cot.

"Easy." My attention flew toward the source of the voice to see none other than Ghost sitting beside me.

I gave him a quizzical "what the fuck" look and his eyes focused on mine sternly through the mask.

"You had a panic attack. Flew off the handle. Hence, the restraints." He sat back in the chair, never once taking his eyes away from me. "Those fangs of yours can really do some damage. Gaz won't be able to throw a good punch with that hand for bout a week."

I swallowed thickly, realizing what I did as he spoke. A faint leftover metallic taste of blood lingered in my mouth. I looked down with guilt.

"Nobody blames you." He huffed. "Hell, not even Gaz. Traumas a bitch."

He paused before continuing. "They had to sedate and restrain you for your safety. Once you're cleared, they can be removed."

I thew my head back with a sigh. I couldn't lie. It genuinely sucked to be moved from one set of restraints to another.

"Look at me."

I turned my head.

"I'm gonna bring the doctor back in here. She's friendlier than I am, promise. Think you can manage?"

I bit my lip in contemplation, my fangs drawing a small dab of blood from my lip as I did.

"Don't worry. I'm staying here."

I took a deep breath and nodded before Ghost peered out the curtain. "She's ready." I heard him say.

There was some shuffling before the doctor walked in. Her eyes showed no fear as if she were used to similar reactions like mine.

"My name is Harriet." She began, holding a clipboard to her chest. "I'm the doctor that's been assigned to you. We did a small checkup while you were sedated, I hope that's okay."

I nodded slowly, trying to keep my breaths steady.

"The Lieutenant informed me on where you came from, so I understand your anxiety around me. You've been put on an IV for the time being to replenish your nutrients until we can be sure you can handle an actual meal."

It was then I noticed the needle in my arm. I frowned at it, but the sight didn't bother me as much as this place. Ghost seemed to be keeping an eye on me, likely to ensure any more freak outs didn't ensue.

"I need to take a look at your throat real quick, do you mind?" She approached me calmly. I flinched but eventually agreed, opening my mouth in response. I watched as she shined a light down my throat, a compressor holding down my tongue.

She scribbled something on her clipboard. "I've been informed on your... alterations. Do you have any other abilities we need to be aware of?"

I thought for a moment and nodded my head slowly, holding up a single finger. She pursed her lips and grabbed a pen and paper.

"You can write, I assume?" She made a motion toward Ghist who unlocked my right arm, leaving the rest of the restraints on.

"Easy, girl. Behave." He said. It seemed like a slight hint of a joke. I took the pen and wrote sloppily on the paper.

Echolocation.

Her eyes widened slightly as she read. "I'm assuming this relates to your altered vocal chords?"

I nodded, averting my gaze to the white flooring.

"Well." She clicked her tongue, putting the clipboard back to her chest. "The good news is that with time, your ability to speak should clear up. It's mostly from dehydration and lack of use; the former being taken care of via IV. You have several infected cuts and a slight fever, along with those infected raw spots on your neck, but those will heal up just fine as well."

I took a breath of relief.

"With enough physical therapy, you should be able to walk just fine. Now the bad news.... we can't reverse the changes made to your vocal chords. If you like, the fangs can be dulled by a dentist, but that one is entirely your choice as neither alterations threaten your livelihood."

As I frowned in thought, Ghost stopped me. "You can decide that later."

I looked back to the doctor who gave me a small sympathetic smile. "One last thing, then I'll let you get some more rest. Do you remember your name? It isn't on the file that was brought with you."

I watched as I was given the pen once more. I closed my eyes and dug through my memory, searching for any remnants of who I was over a year prior.

A woman's voice echoed through my head. No, not a woman. A mother. My mother. She called out to me in agony.

My breath quickened as the memory played like hazy snapshots. Her hand grasping at my shirt. Being dragged away. Her hold on me failing. A gun to her head.

Everything was blurry. Everything was muffled.

Except...

I took the pen and wrote a name on the paper. The same name that echoed through my mind over and over.

A scalding tear fell down my cheek as the doctor nodded.

"It's nice to meet you, (y/n)."

Chapter 6: A Heist Gone Wrong: Part 1

It was the ass crack of dawn when Nami's unceremonious shake roused you from slumber. The determination in her eyes shut any protest you had right out of your mouth. She hastily guided you to the galley as you fought the sleep off your limbs. As you stepped inside, you were met with an unmistakable aura of anticipation. Each member of the crew focused and awake, their eagerness to embark on this new adventure palpable in the air. You poured yourself a cup of coffee, muffling a yawn as you sat down in your usual seat.

Nami swiftly took charge, unfolding a map on the table. Her voice cut through the idle chatter like a blade, demanding attention. "Listen up, everyone," she commanded, her tone unwavering. "We're on a tight schedule, and our success hinges on flawless execution." With a decisive gesture, she produced a hat filled with slips of paper, each containing a number. "Everybody take one," she instructed, her gaze firm. "We need to form teams."

The hat passed from hand to hand, finally settling on you. With a deep breath, you reached into the hat, fingers brushing against the slips of paper until you found one. Pulling it out, you unfolded it to reveal the number 2 scrawled in bold print. A sense of anticipation mingled with your nervous energy as the realization that you were about to infiltrate a Navy base hit you. You passed the hat on to Chopper, sitting next to you.

Nami’s eyes scanned the room, her expression expectant as she waited for everyone to draw their fate. As the last paper was chosen, she nodded in satisfaction. “Alright, who’s team 1?” She asked.

“Me!” Luffy and Sanji, said in unison.

“You’re on food duty. Like usual, try to bring back as much as you can.” She said. “Team 2?”

You hesitantly raised your hand, watching your surroundings in search of who was going to be your partner. The swordsman visibly scowled before saying “Me.”

You matched his expression.

Nami couldn’t help the amused smirk on her face at the twist of fate. “You two, are in charge of retrieving these medical supplies.” She handed you a list. Chopper’s clear handwriting outlining the equipment and supplies he needed. “There isn’t too much on there so it should be easy enough to do as a first mission with us.” She said with a reassuring smile. “Just make sure to keep an eye on Zoro so he doesn’t get lost.” She added with a playful wink, eliciting a grunt of protest from the swordsman.

“I will?” You agreed, question in your tone.

“I won’t get lost” Zoro retorted voice still rough with sleep.

Nami rolled her eyes at his comment. “Just trust me, don’t let him get out of your sight, alright?”

You nodded.

Satisfied, Nami continued. “Who’s on team 3 with me?” She asked.

“That would be me” Brook shot his hand up.

The smile on Nami’s face was downright evil as she said. “We’re in charge of the treasury.” She didn’t have to say more, understanding flowed between her and the skeleton.

“Aye, aye, Nami-san! Let’s make sure not to leave a single Berry behind!” He chimed in, bony fingers tapping excitedly on the wooden table in a rhythmic manner.

She seemed pleased with the answer. “Good! Team 4, you’re in charge of the distraction. Make sure they don’t see us leaving.”

“Leave it to us!” Franky said with a booming voice pointing at him and Robin.

“That leaves Chopper and Usopp, you guys make sure to keep the Sunny safe and sound.” She instructed. “Now, here’s how we’re going to go about it.” She pointed at a spot in the makeshift map. “Franky, you’re going to take the Mini Merry and bring each team to this entrance. If we’re quick enough about it, they shouldn’t notice anything through the shift rotation.” She explained. “The kitchen should be around here, and the infirmary around here.” She pointed at two different points on the map.

You took a mental note of the rough directions you’d have to follow.

"Now, let's get suited up!" Nami declared, her voice commanding as she put down a stack of Marine uniforms atop the map. With efficient movements, she distributed the attires, handing you and Zoro a nurse and doctor’s uniform respectively.

As you unfolded the short pink dress and apron, a small hat tumbled to the ground, eliciting an incredulous remark under your breath. "You can't be serious," you muttered, eyeing the costume with a mixture of disbelief and resignation.

Nami offered a sympathetic smile in response to your incredulity. "Come on, guys, we're leaving in 15 minutes!" she reminded, her tone laced with urgency.

Zoro grumbled unintelligibly as he reluctantly began to strip off his usual attire, joining the other men in the men’s quarters. With a resigned sigh, you headed back to the women's quarters to change, the fabric of the absurd outfit feeling uncomfortably tight against your skin. Clearly tailored to fit Nami and Robin's curves, it left you feeling constrained and awkward.

As Nami helped you tie the apron into a neat bow at your back, you couldn't help but voice your discontent. "Next time, I swear I'm the one playing doctor. Put the idiot in the skimpy nurse outfit instead." you grumbled, the absurdity of the idea not lost on you.

Nami laughed, her amusement infectious as she offered an apologetic shrug. "Sorry, (Y/n), but sometimes we have to make do with what we've got," she replied, adjusting her own uniform with practiced ease.

Robin chimed in with a chuckle, her gaze soft as she looked at you through the reflection in the mirror. "Don't worry too much about it. Besides, you look absolutely adorable," she reassured, her tone gentle.

Rolling your eyes at the compliment, you couldn't help but smirk slightly. "Adorable until I have to run for my fucking life through a Marine base in this," you retorted bitterly.

Nami's laughter only grew louder at your remark, the sound echoing through the room. With the final touches to your attire complete, you hurried back to your forge, hesitantly grabbing Yokubari before rejoining the crew on deck.

Zoro emerged from the men’s quarters, looking less than pleased with his attire. His bright green hair was concealed under a doctor’s cap, the stethoscope draped around his neck seemed entirely out of place. His swords protruded awkwardly beneath the clearly too tight doctor's coat. The swordsman’s scowl deepened as he took in your form but despite his clear discontent, he took his place next to you without protest. You let out a sigh, his own getup somehow making yours feel a little less awkward.

You were about to ask the swordsman your usual question when Sanji's voice cut through the tension, his flirtatious charm in full swing. You couldn't help but roll your eyes shyly at his predictable antics. "(Y/n)-chwan! You're a vision straight out of paradise," he crooned, his gaze fixated on you with unabashed admiration.

Zoro's muttered curse next to you only added to the amusement, his irritation palpable as he shot a scowl in Sanji's direction. "Freaking pervy cook," he grumbled under his breath, his exasperation evident in his tone.

Amidst the banter, Franky's booming voice rang out from the Mini Merry below, announcing their readiness for action. "Alright, everyone! The Mini Merry is all set to go!" he called out, his marine attire contrasting with the usual flamboyance of his style.

Let's go, Sanji!" Luffy shouted eagerly, the chef still twirling around you in exaggerated admiration. When Sanji failed to respond, Luffy’s arm shot up from below, seizing him by the collar and hauling him down on the small ship, leaving the deck feeling silent.

Left standing awkwardly next to each other, you and Zoro exchanged a glance, the tension between you momentarily broken by the absurdity of the situation. The soft hum of the steam engine filled the air as the Mini Merry set off towards its destination, each rhythmic thud of the waves against the hull a reminder of the impending mission.

It didn’t take long for the small boat to return, cutting through the water with precision as it reapproached the ship. Nami's voice carried across the deck, calling out to you and Zoro with a sense of urgency. "Hurry up, you two! Get on board!" she commanded, her tone leaving no room for hesitation.

You exchanged a quick glance with Zoro before heading down the ladder.

"Don't screw this up, witch," Zoro's remark cut through the air with the sharpness of his tone, his gaze piercing as he looked down at you from above.

Your indignation flared instantly at his words. "Huh?" you screeched in disbelief, the insult stinging your pride. But before you could unleash a retort, Zoro had already leaped down onto the smaller boat, his movements nonchalant.

"Freaking asshole! What's that supposed to mean, 'don't mess this up'?" you shot back angrily as you followed suit, stepping onto the wobbly surface of the Mini Merry.

Franky wasted no time, guiding the boat swiftly toward the island once more, his focus unwavering.

"You heard me loud and clear," Zoro retorted with a smirk, his expression unapologetic.

"Cut it out, you two," Franky interjected, his tone firm as he glanced back at you both. "Save the bickering for later. Sound carries over water."

You glared at the swordsman, hoping it carried all the colorful words you wanted to throw at him in this moment.

He ignored you.

Stepping onto the firm ground with angry strides, you couldn't help but watch in disbelief as Zoro sauntered past the glaringly obvious entrance. With sudden urgency, you hurried after him, catching up to the swordsman with determined strides.

"Zoro, wait!" You called out his name, an unusual sound on your lips, your voice a mixture of frustration and urgency. "We're supposed to go this way," you insisted, gesturing towards the clear entrance to the base.

The swordsman paused, his expression a mix of annoyance and begrudging acceptance as he followed your lead, allowing you to guide him towards the correct path.

“Just so you know, I knew exactly where I was going” He said as you closed the door softly behind you.

“You can’t be serious, the door was right there!” You retorted in amazement, sprinting to match his pace down the cold empty corridor.

“I wasn’t lost, witch” He said with certainty.

“What the fuck is your problem, swordsman?” You snapped, whisper shouting at him.

He looked down at you unimpressed. “My problem? Maybe if you stopped being such a pain in the ass, I wouldn’t have one.” He whispered back at you, his pace increasingly fast as he navigated through the corridors. You followed suit with quick strides.

You scoffed, feeling the anger bubbling inside you. “Oh, poor Mr. Brooding swordsman! Maybe if you weren’t so damned stubborn, we could have a civil conversation for once!”

Zoro’s eye narrowed, a dangerous glint flickering in his gaze. “Civil conversation? Ha! That’s rich, coming from you.”

You both took a quick turn, the end of the corridor was a dead end.

You blanched as realization hit you.

You were lost.

“Shit!” You swore under your breath. “This is all your fault” you barked at him, uncaring how loud you were being in the moment.

Zoro's gaze hardened as he turned to face you, his irritation palpable. "My fault?" he retorted, his voice dripping with sarcasm as he continued. "Last time I checked, you were the one who was leading the way."

You bristled at his accusation, the tension between you reaching a boiling point as frustration threatened to consume both of you. "I was following you! You bastard!" you shot back, your voice rising with each word.

Zoro's jaw clenched visibly, his temper flaring as he took a step closer to you, his proximity heightening the intensity of the confrontation. "Listen, witch," he growled, his tone low and menacing. "We don’t have time for your temper tantrums.”

“Fuck!” Your voice reverberated against the walls. YOUR temper tantrums? He was the one behaving like a fucking child!! “Fine, but this isn’t over, you asshole.” You whispered violently back at him. You took a deep breath, forcing yourself to calm down. “We need a map.” You admitted after a few seconds.

“Agreed.” He said, crossing his arms.

“This is a marine base. There has to be a map plastered on some wall somewhere.” You said thinking hard on how you could salvage this major fuck up. “I say we go back on our steps and figure this out.”

Zoro's nod of acknowledgment eased the tension between you slightly as you both turned back towards the intersection. Your heart raced with a mix of frustration and urgency as you struggled to recall the path you had just taken. The haze of anger had clouded your memory, leaving you disoriented in the labyrinthine corridors of the marine base.

Glancing down both sides of the corridor, you weighed your options. To your left, the passage ended abruptly in a dead end, while to the right, it seemed to stretch on indefinitely. With a determined breath, you formulated a plan.

"You go check if there's a map on the left, I'll check the right. We regroup right here, understood?" you instructed Zoro, your voice firm with determination.

He grunted in approval, his gaze meeting yours with a silent understanding of the task at hand. You watched him go, ensuring he headed in the right direction before turning your attention to your own task.

Scouring the walls for any sign of a map, you felt a pang of frustration as you came up empty-handed. Sighing in resignation, you turned back towards the intersection, expecting to find Zoro waiting for you.

But he wasn't there.

Panic surged through you as you scanned the empty corridor, the realization sinking in that Zoro had vanished from sight. It was impossible, there were only dead ends that way. He couldn’t have taken a wrong turn. Had he encountered trouble? No. If it had been trouble, you would have heard something.

Heart pounding, you retraced your steps, racing back to the intersection in search of any sign of the swordsman. But the corridor remained eerily silent, devoid of any trace of Zoro's presence.

You frantically opened door after door, hoping that it was some kind of bad joke.

“Swordsman, this isn’t fucking funny” You said in the void.

No answer.

“Zoro! Get back here!” You said, voice reverberating in the silence of dawn.

Still nothing.

You grit your teeth. Nami had warned you but still, how could someone get themselves lost when there was nowhere to go? Your mind raced with worry as you desperately called out Zoro's name every few steps, each echo bouncing back to you. But there was no response, no sign of the swordsman returning. The bastard had vanished into thin air, leaving you alone in the maze-like base.

With a frustrated growl, you clenched your fists, fighting back the rising panic threatening to overwhelm you. Taking a deep breath to steady your nerves, you made a decision. You couldn't afford to stay rooted in one spot, hoping for the swordsman to miraculously reappear. You had a mission to complete, and every wasted moment increased the risk of discovery by the marines.

Pushing aside your concern for the asshole, you squared your shoulders and pressed forward, determination driving you to find the medical supplies on Chopper's list. Each step forward felt like a leap into the unknown, the silence of the base amplifying the sound of your own footsteps.

Panic seized you, stumbling backwards, you felt your legs give way beneath you. The tips of your fingers felt numb, but your mind was still sharp. With a trembling hand, you reached for your sword, the familiar weight providing a sliver of reassurance amidst the chaos.

In a desperate bid for survival, you drew upon the depths of your strength, unsheathing Yokubari. Its haki instantly dominated your mind, taking over your senses. A wave of power rippled through the air, the man instantly dropped down unconscious in the wake of its power.

One Piece Chapter 1117 - Initial Thoughts

The breaks always feel long but they always end

because One Piece is back! Which means we have to see more of Vegapunk's transmission and the Straw Hats' escape

The reveal last chapter that the Roger pirates knew about the world sinking causes some to wonder if the One Piece is underwater

Or at the least, great treasure hidden at the bottom of the sea

Seems the Polar Tang wasn't the only known ship able to dive underwater, but they're expensive

Also made myself sad because we lost the Polar Tang...and the Victoria Punk

EDIT: I didn't even see it the first time but the Krieg Pirates are there, you see Pearl even more decked out, Krieg has a mane and GIN! HE'S ALIVE!

There are however 2 other ships that know how to dive, an alliance of Romance Chasers

Montblanc Cricket and the Saruyama Alliance react to the news, and consider doing some more diving to investigate a new romance

Cricket also notes how it was before Noland's time, so it would be uncharted territory, just regulate yourself so you don't get the bends again

In the G-5, the SWORD agents lick their wounds

He's out of Wano and in a recovery bed, what about Hawkins? Did he make it?

Jinbe catches Zoro, as Zoro tells Nami to launch the ship anyway, intending to latch on before it flies away

With Sanji's group, he, Bonney, Atlas and Franky are still waiting for Luffy, but they're also under heavy fire

Comms are down, but Luffy's voice is unmistakable

Dorry and Brogy also call on Oimo and Kashii to get the ship ready, sending the legendary Giant Warrior Pirates into action

Out they come taking on a warship each by themselves, the one in the lower middle looks like he's about to eat a dude

Bluegrass isn't some easy shmoe though, using a commandeered Weaponized Sea Beast to attack and encouraging the marines to step up

The laser blast from the sea beast blows a hole in the longboat, and then Kashii is battered by Doll's Rock n' Roll Blaster (which seems to be a Gatling-esque series of punches)

The marines much like they do with Hina fawn over Doll when she gets violent, wonder if she trained under Garp with such fisticuffs?

The felling of Kashii has motivated the marines to not back down from the giants either

Luffy meanwhile is curious where Warcury went, since he's no longer on their tail, but the giant captains are too relieved to wonder about that

Alas, all but V. Nusjuro surround the Iron Giant, realising that it's the same one that attacked Marejois

Of course this is where Vegapunk is about to deliver a closing juicy statement

'To those who carry the letter 'D.' in your name' !!!???

Dragon with the classic ellipsis, Sabo thinks of his brothers, Koby thinks of Luffy and Garp, Blackbeard interest piqued, and Bepo calls out to his captain - so Law is very much alive

'Among you there is mo-' and the giant is knocked down, along with the transmission

And a collective wail among the audiences of the world in and out of the manga is heard

Morgans, Vivi and Wapol react to the cut off, as the Gorosei and York breathe a sigh of relief that the transmission is over.

We expected the blueball and yet it still sucked to be blue balled XD Unless we aren't that is. Pride comes before the fall maybe?

I would say it's 70/30 on the side of the Gorosei succeeding, we don't need to know any more at this stage right now - but I do blame the 10 minute delay for picture. But what could 'mo-' - the chapter's title - mean? What more was it. Among you there is mo-what? Someone with the D. has something, and it's important.

But it does look like we're reaching the final escape from Egghead. I hope Sentomaru made it out, X Drake can survive and leave Wano after all. There are still some fights going on among the Giants and the Marines, plus we don't know how the CP0 lot will resolve itself, but we tend to take for granted just how insanely jam-packed Egghead has been, and Elbaf is next!

Glad Zoro got a little bit more cred back for matching V. Nusjuro, plus I liked it was a fastball special it's just fun when groups fight in sync with each other. Also kinda glad we put some respect on Bluegrass and Doll, shows there are levels to vice admirals outside of just Garp.

All the cameos were good too, would've liked to have seen Tashigi and Bogard again but happy to see Smoker and Cricket was a nice surprise.

Unless Vegapunk has one last trick up his sleeve, it's time to get off this island.

SABEZRA WEEK: Day 2 (Oct 24): Memories

*Sabine remembers a uniquely bizarre yet entertaining day aboard the Ghost with Ezra. * 

She concluded that he was either doing a fantastic impression of a Kowakian monkey-lizard or had drunk too much caf before bed. Or both. Either way, the pose she found Ezra in in the lounge was enough to overcome her self-control and cause her to burst out laughing. The pile he fell into was an added bonus. 

“Chopper! How many times-?!” His retort was cut short when he realized it was not the troublemaking droid mocking him. “Wait, Sabine?” 

“The one and only.” she giggled. “What are you even doing?” 

Ezra brushed off his pants (and his embarrassment) and got to his feet. “It's a Jedi exercise. Kanan taught it to me. It’s supposed to help me hone my senses, feel the Force better.” 

“By jumping around like a baby nuna?” 

“Wha- it’s not- no...” Ezra stammered for a moment before shooting her a glare. Sabine chuckled again and put her hands up. 

“Easy, Loth-rat. I’m just teasing you.” 

Ezra deflated a bit. “Sorry, it’s just that Chopper gets in the way of this all the time. Believe it or not, I do try to take this stuff seriously.” 

Sabine’s smirk turned into a more genuine smile. As much of a pain as he could be at times, she always admired how determined he was to do well in his Jedi training. Sure, she, Zeb and Chopper occasionally poked fun at him and messed around with Kanan’s lessons at times, but it was always in good fun. The time she had Chopper lock down his feet quickly came to mind. 

Though that also reminded her why she and the others had been laying off on their teasing. With those two new Inquisitors on their tail, to say nothing of the Sith Lord they ran into on Lothal, Ezra was more determined than ever to continue his training and to be ready to fight. Having a burning red lightsaber blade to her throat was enough to make her appreciate how dangerous and cruel they could be. And here Ezra was, even if it wasn’t immediately on his mind, preparing to eventually fight them. There was a burden on him, one she knew she could never really help alleviate. Unless... 

“Think I could do them with you?” 

Ezra was so surprised by the question he nearly fell over again. “Huh?” 

“Your exercise. Maybe I can help you with them?” 

She wasn’t sure what made her jump at the idea. From what little she had seen, they seemed to be pretty standard physical calisthenics. And having an exercise buddy was always helpful. But the fact that they were Jedi exercises...that should have clued her in that this was a dumb thing to suggest. 

She felt the need to explain herself. “I’m no Jedi, but it looked like you were doing some kind of physical exercise routine. Mandalorians use the same things to help prepare ourselves for combat training. Maybe if you tell me some of the details, I can help you with the transitions.” She may have been rambling with the explanation for a bit, so she resigned herself to his cocky dismissal. 

“Okay, sure.” 

Now it was Sabine’s turn to be surprised. “Really?” 

“Hey, you help out with my training already. What’s one more thing?” He was right of course. Even if it was just as a supply of stun blasts for him to deflect, she had been part of his training process for a while now. 

Sabine scratched her head. “I just thought you wouldn’t been a little more,” she thought for a moment, “I don’t know, picky about your special Jedi techniques?” 

Ezra laughed a bit. “It’s no big deal. Kanan told me they’re pretty low-level stuff anyway. Nothing too advanced.” 

“You calling me a youngling?” 

“You said it, not me.” he quipped. 

“Do you want my help or not?” 

“Alright,” he chuckled, “over here.” 

Sabine made her way over to the center of the floor with Ezra, facing each other in a slight crouch. “Alright,” Ezra explained, “Kanan called these ‘Jedi Flow’. The idea is to let yourself be accustomed to the Force around you, moving around the Force rather than just bumping against it. The exercises are supposed to take the concept and apply it to physical actions. Breathing, moving, and alignment, moving from one point to the next. Make sense?” 

Surprisingly, it did. Not only that, but Sabine also seemed to pick up on what Ezra’s problem was earlier. “Try this,” she said. She walked over next to him and motioned him to take another stance. “Try to make your motions work when you breathe out, not in. Air’s expanding your body already, let it do the work for you.” 

Ezra nodded and tried again. This time, the motion was a lot smoother than it had been when she had walked in. “Thanks,” he smiled. 

Sabine returned the grin. “No problem. Shall we?”

"We kept at it for a few hours afterwards. It’s hard to explain, but think of it as turning 2D to 3D. Moving around like that felt a lot more natural and, well, flowing than what he had been doing before. Of course, Zeb walked in on us and decided we were still looking ridiculous. Talk about embarrassing. But we got even. After the TIE fighter, I want to say the hair dye in his shampoo was one of my finest works. Ezra kept calling him the Rainbow Lasat for weeks after that!” 

Sabine laughed at the memory before looking across the table. She suddenly remembered she had a guest and felt her face heat up a bit. “Sorry,” she apologized, “you probably want me to get back to the Jedi stuff.” 

“No, no it’s fine, really.” The man across the table assured her, giving her a reassuring smile. “Honestly, the tangents are kind of refreshing.” 

Sabine gave him a sarcastic smirk. “Really? Alert the Holonet, Luke Skywalker likes to hear about pranking Lasats!” 

Giving a laugh of his own, the black-clad Jedi Knight took a sip from his mug. “I mean it. It’s good to hear about what Ezra was like himself. These conversations would be pretty boring if you were telling me about some Jedi droid.” 

“I do know about one, if that would help.” 

Once the laughter died down, Luke set his glass down. “All I’m saying is that it’s good that the Jedi are being remembered as the people they were. It’s important to rebuild what the Order practiced and preached, sure. But it’s just as important to remember their memories. Our legacy is more than our deeds. It’s also our character and the people we leave behind.” 

Sabine’s smile dripped a little as she took in Luke’s more sentimental words. Seeing this, he turned to conversation back to the present. “Besides, I can see that talking about him makes you feel better.” 

Sabine sighed. “It just hurts sometimes. You miss someone for so long that it feels better to just not bring it up.” 

“I get that.” said Luke. “Really, I do. But I also know how important it is to keep those memories alive. I’ve lost plenty of people, but I still hold them close.” He looked up at his host. “I know how much he means to you. Even if Hera didn’t tell me, I could tell.” 

Sabine fingered her mug before looking up, ignoring how her cheeks warmed up. “I’m going to find him.” 

Luke smiled warmly. “Then it sounds like we’ve all got something to look forward to.” 

The conversation broke off when Luke’s comlink beeped. Groaning slightly, Luke downed the rest of his drink before fishing out the device. “That’s probably Han telling me they’re done.” 

“Better get going then.” Sabine said as she collected the mugs. “And tell Leia I said hi.” 

“Will do.” Luke rose from the table and collected his cloak. 

“Hey, Luke.” Sabine called out. Luke turned around just as the door opened up. Sabine gave one more smile. “Thanks for coming to talk. Really, I mean it.” 

Coming to talk about Ezra was the unspoken part of it. He was right, she had to admit. Reminiscing about their time together, all the old memories. Talking about them- about him- really did make her feel better. 

“Any time, Sabine.” said Luke. “May the Force be with you.”
