Eastern curlew.
The world’s largest shorebirds, eastern curlews leave their breeding grounds in Russia and China each year to make an epic journey to the coasts of Australia, using the Earth’s magnetic field to navigate as they trace invisible flyways in the sky. Eastern curlews are found only in the east Asian-Australasian flyway. But the mudflats they depend on along their migration route are being destroyed ‒ and curlew numbers have declined by more than 80% in just over 30 years.

Shifty
Tumblr media
Say hello to Shifty, the Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus). Shifty is pretty elusive and is rarely seen. The wren is caught here on the ramp leading up to my backyard shed. The ramp by the way is the envy of modern engineering.
"In summer it can seem that every patch of woods in the eastern United States rings with the rolling song of the Carolina Wren. This shy bird can be hard to see, but it delivers an amazing number of decibels for its size. Follow its teakettle-teakettle! and other piercing exclamations through backyard or forest, and you may be rewarded with glimpses of this bird's rich cinnamon plumage, white eyebrow stripe, and long, upward-cocked tail. This hardy bird has been wintering farther and farther north in recent decades." - allaboutbirds.org

9 Books
Hellooooo so sorry for the lateness of this.
The lovely @carryonsimoncarryonbaz tagged me a while ago and I forgot to answer (but I have remembered! A triumph with my goldfish brain for real)
Likewise, series will be a single entry for me. Also guys, I feel like I haven't read a physical book in way too long, so some of these might be favorite reads of the moment and of all time. Also in no particular order:
The Carry On trilogy by Rainbow Rowell (@rainbowrowell). I will never shut up about this series. The characters and writing are some of my favorite ever, and I love seeing everyone's interpretations on here of different lines and moments and uncovering new layers to all of their emotional journeys. If you like the chosen one trope and have ever wondered what happens to the hero once they've done the thing/fulfilled the prophecy, this is definitely for you.
The An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir. I have yet to read the last book though so no one spoil! But a super well done series with incredible worldbuilding, plot, and characters. Definitely not a light-hearted series though so like be forewarned.
Dragonfall by L.R. Lam (@lauraroselam) I read this recently but as soon as I finished it I had the urge to re-read it again (which I will when I have time) just to re-absorb and understand everything about the world and character. It's such an imaginative world with very well defined history and social norms that my lore-loving brain couldn't get enough of. Highly recommend and can't wait for the sequel.
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan (obviously). One of my favorites of all time and a big marker of my childhood. Ashamed to say that I still haven't read The Blood of Olympus though, so don't come at me. I'm planning a reread of the full series at some point so I can actually remember what was going on before I read it.
The Wrath & The Dawn duology by Renée Ahdieh. This is a re-write/re-imagining of the tale of 1001 Nights. The characters in this were great, and Renée's descriptions were so beautiful and artistic. Being Middle Eastern myself, I really felt like she captured the essence of our food and culture. I just really loved reading a Middle Eastern-inspired fantasy for once. I like to go back to it a lot, and definitely need to read other books by this author.
Peter & The Starcatchers series by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Another childhood favorite. This is a re-write/re-imagining of Peter Pan, and starts with the story of how he actually became Peter Pan. From what I remember of this series, I absolutely loved the first three books. The last two were pretty good as well, but we started getting into a more modern time period and it wasn't my favorite thing to explore.
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. This was a recent read so it's definitely just kind of been on my mind a lot. If you like magic libraries and flirty banter, you should read this. I loved the concept of books being alive and dangerous, and I loved the two main characters a lot. Elizabeth was a surprising delight and I really loved how smart and adaptable she was. All in all, it was just very enjoyable and ticked a lot of my favorite boxes.
Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. This is another childhood staple. (I legitamately haven't had the opportunity to sit and read in so long that I'm blanking on anything I may have read in more recent years, forgive me). This was a super fun series with the main plot being about two siblings being sent to live with their grandpa for the summer who they don't really know very well. It seems like a normal farm on the outside but when magical things keep happening on the premises, it's hard to keep that façade up.
Ok so I didn't make it to 9. Clearly I haven't read much recently, and it's actually hurting my ego. This is tragic. I have a lot of books, but reading and buying books are lowkey separate hobbies for me. Someone recommend good books to me down below please and I will endeavor to read them.
I'll tag some people below whose usernames I actually know off the top of my head (sorry to any of my mutuals who don't see their names here), but I'd love to see anyone's favorites so feel free to tag me and participate.

airsLLide No. 3528: C-GKCP, Boeing 737-217 Adv., Canadian Airlines, Toronto-Pearson, August 30, 1989.
In the late 1980s, Canadian Airlines grew into Canada's second largest airline, literally as the result of a shopping frenzy. CP Air had started the move towards concentration by acquiring regional carriers EPA Eastern Provincial Airlines and Nordair in 1986/87, before being acquired itself by Pacific Western Airlines of Calgary.
Following this acquisition, the airline was rebranded as Canadian Airlines, using a stylized "Canadi<n" lettering to avoid any discussions about giving priority to either the English or French language. This was a wise move considering the fact that in 1986 Quebecair had been drawn into the merging game as well, when it was acquired by Pacific Western's parent PWA Corp. and became the basis on which feeder subsidiary Inter-Canadi<n was formed.
Last but not least, in fall 1989, also Wardair would be acquired by Canadian Airlines, thereby creating a situation with Air Canada and Canadian Airlines dominating the Canadian market by their sheer sizes.
Since the various mergers leading to the formation of Canadian Airlines followed in such short intervalls, the newly formed joint fleet operated in a whole array of interim and hybrid color schemes for the following few years. C-GKCP is one of at least three Boeing 737s still sporting CP Air's iconic 1970s livery in the summer of 1989, two years after the merger took place, and even the blanked-out CP Air tiltes can still be made out underneath the cockpit windows.

forgot that i haven't done a lil round up of some recent muse additions so:
AMALIA BRAGANZA, a maid unwillingly turned into a vampire in the early 1800s, introduced to high society as her maker's distant cousin, spent years not only worming her way into her maker's affections/inheritance but also planning how to kill him (he was shitty he deserved it) so that nobody would ever know it was her. lived out the rest of the regency era as a popular but mysterious spinster of means who was only ever seen at evening soirées. spends the next 200 years travelling, learning, and developing an entire network of information into primarily vampire covens/society, but she likes to know about shitty human aristocrats too. mostly an information broker for other vampires, but she's cunning, sharp, and will work against people she thinks are awful. (i.nterview with the v.ampire oc)
ISRA NAZAROVA, an early 20th century academic who works for t.alamasca, a secret society dedicated to the research and archiving of paranormal activity, as well as suppressing said information. she's a nerd, a PhD candidate in eastern european vampire folklore, and is morally opposed to her organisation suppressing info particularly on vampires, because she believes it's more important to keep people safe and let them know how to protect themselves, so she's trying to figure out if she can...steal definitive proof from the archives or something. cannot fight whatsoever, will still be wandering into danger with her notebook regardless. (i.nterview with the v.ampire oc)
LUCY M.ACLEAN, vault 33 born and raised, now exploring the surface wasteland looking for her dad and experiencing The Horrors. not gonna say more purely bc i know some people haven't finished watching the show and i don't want to spoil but please know i love her so much. (f.allout tv canon)
ROSALIE PEARSON, a bubbly, impulsive american nurse in the '40s who absolutely does not think her decisions through, which is how she ended up as a flight nurse (lead medical officer on medevac flights), an extremely dangerous job that she is surprisingly good at. loves to paint and explore. (oc)
JO H.ARVELLE, i don't remember if i mentioned her already so. barmaid at the roadhouse, a stopping point for the hunting community that she has made into a real community hub and way to share info on monsters, who desperately wants to be a hunter herself, eventually going against her mother's wishes to do so. feisty and can stand up for herself, but inexperienced in the field. (spn but like, only distantly)

what about you tell us an actress/artist you think would be perfect to play you in your biopic?
im so sorry i answered this late but ive actually put a lot thought into this bc it was an assignment we had in highschool.
id like my biopic to be animated. i think the idea came after i literally couldn't find a large enough name in the industry to do my project on that looked like me who wasn't middle-eastern, latina, or isr*eli (they had to at least be from the same continent as me) so i had a small crisis and thought "wouldn't it be easier to just draw me?". anyways after clearing it w my teacher i did it on a animation studio.
so 15yrld me chose studio ghibli bc i was (and still am) a sucker for it's whimsical art style. i modeled the biopic after the wind rises. i had it in my head it was gonna be a sports bio pic bc it was just before or after i stopped playing football "temporarily". anyways this was also when my voice was weird for some reason so i sounded a lot like claire danes specifically when she does san from princess mononoke. i dont sound like this at all today LOL
youtube
20smth yrld me doesn't think my life is interesting enough for studio ghibli anymore BUT i do love whimsical art styles so itd probably be directed in part by tomm moore bc i love his irish folklore trilogy and i think with the right direction it'd be able to be translated into moroccan culture?? especially bc spirituality is such a big part of my life that id need to factor that in too. luke pearson (creator of hilda) would also be a huge inspo. cuz his art feels both so still and so alive. he also has a loud lil shit main child character who my mom thinks is the perfect child me "you just need to add the curls and that's basically what i had to deal with". i just think he'd depict vancouver perfectly. some of his art for reference:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
as for a voice actor?? idk actually?? probably melanie lynskey as beatrice from "over the garden wall" it's just the correct amount of holier than thou attitude w the roasts. my only thing is im much more of a talker but in terms of voice yah that's me lololol
youtube
you probably didn't want the ask to be this long so ill stop here for u 😭😭

Australians clueless about their country's most endangered species
Tumblr media
Australia holds an unenviable conservation status: it’s the fourth-worst country in the world for species extinctions and is in the top three for critically endangered animals.
This week’s Federal Budget included a $224 million allocation to help save threatened species – news that coincides with some concerning findings of a new paper authored by University of South Australia (UniSA) researchers.
A study led by UniSA conservation psychologist Dr Elissa Pearson reveals overwhelming public ignorance of Australia’s most threatened species, a factor that is contributing to the extinction crisis of endangered animals.
UniSA researchers, alongside colleagues from Zoos Victoria and Edith Cowan University, polled more than 300 zoo visitors and community members, testing their awareness of seven endangered species at risk of extinction within the next decade.
“More than 90 per cent of those surveyed did not recognise six of the seven species; the exception being the Tasmanian devil,” Dr Pearson says.
The other species were the Leadbeater’s possum, eastern barred bandicoot, helmeted honeyeater, southern corroboree frog, Lord Howe Island (LHI) stick insect, and orange-bellied parrot.
advertisement
The Journal for Nature Conservation paper outlines a clear link between species recognition, likeability and conservation support, showing that people are far more inclined to donate toward conserving Australia’s iconic koala, kangaroo and wombat populations, despite these not being endangered.
“There are huge gaps in community knowledge regarding native Australian wildlife, with less than eight per cent of people able to correctly name six of seven endangered species when shown photographs.
“Apart from the Tasmanian devil, which 86 per cent of people recognised, the level of familiarity and knowledge of our vulnerable species is limited. Misidentification is also common, particularly the eastern barred bandicoot which is often mistaken for a bilby.”
The most likeable Australian animals – the koala and kangaroo – also reflect the ‘similarity principle’, which suggests that people tend to prefer animals most like humans, and that when only a limited number of species can be conserved, mammals are favoured over other species, regardless of their endangered status.
The helmeted honeyeater, southern corroboree frog and LHI stick insect were consistently the least liked species.
“Apart from the likeability factor, our study showed that being able to recognise species increased people’s willingness to support their conservation, so that is a starting point we need to address.”
Endangered insects are fighting an uphill battle for support, with 85 per cent of people disliking them, putting their survival at most risk. However, this perception could be changed with some clever marketing initiatives, the researchers suggest.
“The LHI stick insect has some exceptional qualities, such as their resilience and survival against all odds, their ability to reproduce without males, their tendency to form large social groups during the day, or even the fact that their foot pads are heart shaped. If people knew these facts the likeability factor would likely shoot up,” Dr Pearson says.

Toronto seeing wettest summer ever as rainfall grips Eastern Canada
If you’re thinking there has been a lot of rain this summer in Toronto, you’re right. In fact, many parts of Eastern Canada have been seeing a wetter than normal year – and with just over a month until summer ends, the country’s largest city has seen already seen its wettest summer ever. “That’s impressive considering we are only halfway through August,” Global News Meteorologist Ross Hull said. “This year has been much wetter than normal across Eastern Canada, especially for the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and Montreal area.” 500 mm of rain has fallen so far in Toronto Hull shared the figures after the region experienced another heavy rainfall over the weekend, another rain event less than a month after catastrophic flooding in Toronto caused more than $940 million in insured damage, the Insurance Bureau of Canada said Monday. Story continues below advertisement Toronto Pearson Airport recorded 128.3 millimetres of rainfall Saturday, according to Environment Canada. Given that the airport gets an average of 78 mm of rain in August, the downpour meant it saw more than a month’s worth of rain in the span of hours. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. Hull said the west end of the GTA saw two month’s worth of rain falling over a weekend. “Toronto (Pearson Airport) has had its wettest summer (June, July, August) on record with a rain total of close to 500 mm so far, beating the previous wettest summer on record in 2008,” he said. “This summer has also produced two of the top 10 wettest days on record at YYZ: the July 16 rain event that brought significant flooding to the GTA and flooded the (Don Valley Parkway with 97.8 mm), along with this weekend’s deluge that delivered a staggering 128.3 mm to Mississauga on Saturday with a weekend total of 150.6 mm.” Montreal also seeing record breaking rainfall Trending Now Canadian parents to 18-month-old girl both diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses Michael Oher of ‘The Blind Side’ speaks out for 1st time since suing Tuohys Hull added Montreal has also broken rainfall records this summer, with the rainiest day on record being Aug. 9 when 153.8 mm fell, breaking the previous record by 60 mm. The average August monthly rainfall for Trudeau Airport is 94.1mm, he said. Story continues below advertisement Montreal was hit hard by the remnants of tropical storm Debby, which led to water-logged homes and highways. Debby’s deluge flooded 3,300 private buildings and about 60 municipal buildings, according to Mayor Valérie Plante. Nova Scotia has also had flash flood events this summer, Hull said. Heavy overnight rain washed out roads and forced evacuations in early July, and was also blamed for the death of a 13-year-old boy. That region of Nova Scotia is still recovering from flooding a year ago that caused extensive damage, and killed four people. Hull said the intensity of floods this summer has overwhelmed the infrastructure in many cities. “Many urban drainage systems and structures are not designed to withstand a month’s worth of rain or more within just hours,” he said. “Plus, the ground has been saturated, meaning less ability to absorb runoff from these storms.” &copy 2024 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. There are a lot of juvenile birds around right now, eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis) are not exception. I saw this young bluebird atop an oak tree at the edge of the forest.
You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

"PAY ROLL IS STOLEN BY GRIMSBY GUNMEN," Hamilton Spectator. October 10, 1933. Page 7. --- Sum of $4,300 in the Hands of Armed Bandits --- Messenger on Way From Bank With Cash ---- Grimsby, Oct. 10. - Just after 2 o'clock this afternoon W. Hill, clerk with the Supreme Canners, here, subsidiary of the Canadian Canners of Hamilton, was held up at the point of a gun by two men, and robbed of the pay roll amounting to $4,800. Police at the moment are seeking the robbers.
Mr. Hill was proceeding down Robinson street with the pay roll on his way from the Bank of Commerce when the robbery took place. The men made a get-away, and Chief of Police DeMille, Provincial Constable Woods and Provincial Constable Pearson, of St. Catharines, were immediately notified.
Snatched Satchel P. Croucher, secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Canners, stated that the Supreme Canners' plant is a subsidiary of the local company, and that the pay roll taken would be about $4,300, The version of the robbery given to the local office was that the two men drove up alongside Mr. Hill, and while one got out of the machine, brandishing a pistol, the other man stayed at the wheel. After grabbing the bag, which had just been filled with bills at the Bank of Commerce, the gunmen fled. Officials of the company at the Hamilton office stated that an investigation had been launched into the circumstances surrounding the affair.
Taken By Surprise Mr. Hill had just got to the corner of Main street and Robinson street when the hold-up took place. He was about to pass a man who stood leaning against a tree when he and another man who had a foot on the running board of a car suddenly demanded that he "stick them up." The clerk, taken by surprise, complied and the two men still menacing him with guns, jumped into the car and sped away. Mr. Hill had sufficient presence of mind to take the number of the car, however, and rushed to the nearest phone to call the police. Instantly a search for the robbers was instituted and the clue of the car number is being followed up vigorously.
Gave the Alarm When the police were notified, Chief DeMille called the Hamilton and St. Catharines police to watch for the car bearing the two bandits. The car at first headed west towards Hamilton, and Chief Coulter, of this city, immediately placed a cordon of officers across the cut-off and eastern entrance to the city to prevent escape in that direction.
False Numbers A check-up by the Hamilton police disclosed the fact that either the number on the bandits' car was taken down wrongly or else they have altered plates on the machine. A license number was flashed to all police departments, but the local officers found the original of the number on a car that had been parked in J. B. Ross' garage all day.

airsLLide No. 7379: C-GTPW, Boeing 737-275 Adv., Canadian Airlines, Toronto-Pearson, June 1, 1992.
The view from the famous Toronto carpark in the center of Terminal 1. The building that once offered a vantage albeit quite elevated point to overlook the Northern ramp has unfortunately been demolished since, as its concept with an underground access road for passengers, and the carpark atop a terminal located mid-field regularly got the premisses clogged with visitors and travellers, and also offered no possibilities to expand.
Back in 92, the Boeing 737-200 series was the most frequent piece of equipment for merged carrier Canadian Airlines International, noteably because the various airlines that were amalgamated into Canadian already used the type: CP Air, with C-GCPT on the distant taxyway as its legacy, Eastern Provincial, Nordair Canada, Quebecair and Pacific Western Airlines, from which source C-GTPW in the foreground originated, all used the model on their regional, domestic and North American flights. Thus, the merged carrier could build on a compatible joint fleet of 69 Boeing 737-200s.
