Scars
Summary: Stolas gives Blitz a chance to get a human disguise. He doesn't expect what he sees.
Wordcount: 4210
Rating: T for canon-typical language/suggestiveness, descriptions of scarring

Stolas had wondered about the markings, of course.
His memories of the charming, spirited little imp boy had been blurry around the edges, as much as he’d tried to cling to them- an impression of excitement and joy, a lightning-fast friendship that had been captured in a jar but fuzzed like the paper labels at the back of the cheat cabinet when he tried to grab a midnight snack.
He hadn’t remembered white besides the flaking pearl of curved horns, but then, a long time had passed since that day when they had run around and played pretend before adulthood pulled them apart.
He hadn’t remembered white on the poster that he’d ripped off a tree and stuffed in the back of his closet and didn’t look at except for when Stella was too awful to dwell on- except on the boots that were shined brighter than the gates an eternity away, and stripes on arms that seemed thin as toothpicks. (Even though there was just a hint of muscle underneath, muscle that he couldn’t help but imagine wrapping around his-)
Well. It didn’t matter now.
Yes, Stolas had wondered, but a brush over the white skin with his own spindly fingers showed it was a touch tougher than the brilliant red that made up the rest of Blitzy, so it was rugged, he decided. A mark of aging on imps, perhaps, or something he’d taken on willingly like the tattoos he’d seen on some of the Wrathian imps during the games, shaped like teeth or claws or vortexes, avenues of power. Of course his Blitzy wouldn’t be satisfied with something so plain as that. He was an adventurer, a visionary, an assassin.
He had faced life and beaten it into submission, powerful in a way that Stolas could only hope to be. It was tucked away in Stolas’s mind the same as the slash across Alejandro’s chest from a duel of passion was- a tantalizing part of the myth that surrounded his daring, bold, mysterious Blitzy, each piece of him something to worship with fingers and a beak and kisses. Stallion, champion, lover. Perhaps it had even been an error made during the process by an artist with shaky fingers, and he had simply said ‘fuck it’ and told them to fill in the whole thing, give him a mask like a phantom and fingerless gloves that bristled with flecks of color at the edge. It was quite the look, and even though Stolas had never quite imagined him this way in those squirreled-away minutes as a young adult, he wouldn’t trade it for the world.
(Blitz heard better on the right side, brushed away sweat faster with a dismissive hand on the left, and wouldn’t let Stolas touch his hands until the fourth moon. Even then, he pulled away after just a minute, murmuring something about his palms that was so low even Stolas couldn’t quite catch it. Little quirks, things anyone might have.)
They wanted to test out a human disguise. Blitz had said that they shouldn’t have to blow any more of the budget than they already had on them, and the incident in LA months ago had left a sour taste in his mouth on the matter anyhow. Stolas agreed- the safer that they could be, the better, and he owed him for helping to find Via that day, even though she shouldn’t have been able to get to the book in the first place. Besides, he had to admit that he was a bit curious about what Blitz would look like. His outfit likely wouldn’t shift too much, but would he have hair? Would his horns be translated any? Perhaps they could try some kind of date up on Earth without having to worry about drawing undue attention the way they may in Hell.
Sure, it was likely that Blitz would be on the shorter side as a human, but their difference would likely be far less extreme than it was in their natural forms. It would be nice to be able to hold hands without him bending down or Blitz nearly cracking his back, or kiss without having a handful of feathers yanked out in the process as Blitz pulled him down. (Not that he didn’t enjoy that, to be fair- it felt like being claimed, in a way, and the dominance required to simply drag him down… ooh.)
They had chosen an uninhabited area, or at least one that was unlikely to have any interruption. It was a small lake tucked into mountains that Stolas had found years ago when experimenting with the Grimoire and had started slipping to when things became too overwhelming. It was far from the filthy smog that blanketed many human cities, as well as many Hellish ones. He had found the remains of fires a few times, but he had been lucky enough to avoid any direct human contact as of yet.
He had already shifted himself, the soft silk of his own human disguise a strange comfort. He hadn’t had much use for it in ages before that one disastrous day, but the way the clothes molded perfectly to his stripped-bare skin was sweet in a sensory way. (He liked the puffy sleeves too. They just looked fun.)
“So, this is just a ‘snap your fingers’ thing, right? I’ll be able to do it myself if we get in shit?”
“Once this is connected to you, you should be able to turn it on and off at will once in the human world and it’s on your person,” Stolas said, drumming his fingers on the book before tracing a circle around the page. “It will require some effort and contact with this crystal-” He held up the ruby gemstone dangling from its leather choker, chosen specifically for how well it complemented the coat that Blitz usually wore. “-But yes, you should be able to cast the spell without contact to the Grimoire, the same as your Loona.”
It had been… quite an effort to coax the crystal out of Asmodeus, but Stolas had to admit that it was going to be a worthwhile investment- if they could avoid being spotted again, if they could keep Blitz safe, it would be worth all of the painful secrets and promises of returned favors in the world. (The use of the book lay a question for another day, as Stolas insisted they keep it for now as a precautionary connection back to Hell in case anything went awry. It was better than to have to come get them himself again if things went belly-up, after all.)
“Fuckin’ sweet. Lay it on me, big boy.” Blitz made a ‘gimme’ motion with his hands, and Stolas gave a little chuckle.
“Normally, Asmodeus does this himself, but I had to procure it for you, so I’ll finish the enchantment now that you’re here. I would say keep your pants on, but I wouldn’t exactly be opposed if this knocked them off.”
Blitz scoffed before settling back on his haunches. “Har har. I should make you pay for that by having to take my pants off with your beak next week.”
“Oh, I’d just enjoy the challenge,” Stolas said dismissively before setting the crystal down in the crease of the book and murmuring the enchantment, fingers weaving into the air as a soft red glow began to emanate from it. “Now, this may cause a bit of a tingling sensation when you put it on, but it shouldn’t be painful.”
“I’m holding you to that.” Blitz watched as it glowed brighter and brighter before a flash blasted outwards like a miniature supernova. “Hey! You didn’t say it was going to fuck with my eyes!”
“Sorry, sorry, I forgot that part!” Stolas said, lifting the crystal that had stopped glowing again before holding it out to Blitz. “It should be properly enchanted now, try it on.”
Gingerly, Blitz unclipped the rounded skull brooch on his usual choker, tucking it into his pocket. When he grasped the crystal, magic scurried around where it touched skin, shifting red to warm brown.
“Excellent, it looks like it works,” Stolas said, although his eyes squinted. Something was… off about the texture on the palm, but the crystal was covering most of it. Blitz hooked the gem into the leather, and sharp sparkles flashed over his body, quickly painting on an illusion of humanity.
Stolas’s mouth opened and then closed again as the light dimmed, the sweet lake air not quite making it to his lungs as the imp tilted his head that was now only about a foot below Stolas’s.
“What, am I that much fuckin’ uglier than humans normally are, or- wait, shit.” He raised one hand to his right eye. “Fucking seriously? Human skin doesn’t heal as well, does it? Fuck, that’s gonna be such a pain- Stolas?”
Scars. Every one of the white marks that were splattered over the imp’s skin like gore were scars- and mostly burns from the looks of it. The one around his eye meant it was sealed partially shut, and they were slightly lighter than the surrounding skin, rippled like the surface of a planet that had seen space debris.
Blitz sighed, rubbing at his good eye as he looked over at his reflection in the water. “Well, now I get to choose between humans staring at me because I’m a demon, and humans staring at me because of this. They healed ages ago, why do they look so fresh?”
“Human forms are based on your physical characteristics if you were to have lived a similar human life,” Stolas said quietly. “The base form is chosen based off your body shape, but things like scars or missing limbs remain similar, and are sometimes more intense since they had less chance to heal properly in this form. On top of that, imps are hardier than humans, I suppose…”
“Fuck yeah we are, I’d be a corpse twenty times over if I was as squishy as those meatbags.” Blitz waved a dismissive hand, and Stolas couldn’t stop staring at the discolorations on his arm. “Ugh, it’s mostly the eye thing, I usually cover up the arms anyway and having two full eyes kiiiinda helps with the assassin thing.” He prodded at his eyelid, sounding more annoyed than pained- although it made sense, if they had mostly healed already with just the scars themselves lingering echoes of whatever he’d survived.
“How… how long have you...?” Stolas asked tentatively, and Blitz waved a hand.
“Long-ass story, but years. It was a whole thing. They hurt like a bitch, but I’m mostly used to ‘em now.” He turned, ruffling a hand through his hair. “Of course I still end up looking kind of like Mr. ‘Ran Out On His Gig’, that’s just peachy. At least the marks’ll stop people from making that call.”
Stolas squinted- he hadn’t even noticed, but sure enough, the general facial shape and skin and hair color were somewhat similar to the Ragers man Blitz had been mistaken for, albeit with black lines through the eyes, brilliant red pupils, and his heart marking as a forehead tattoo, with little spikes of hair falling on either side to show it off. He supposed it made some sort of sense, but Blitz was right- no one would mistake them now. Frankly, Stolas was surprised he even remembered what the man had looked like from what brief glances they’d gotten of his visage.
“Do they… hurt?”
“Not much, the toughness in the skin just feels different,” Blitz said, turning around and catching Stolas’s eyes for the first time. “Why are you so surprised anyway? Didn’t you know?”
“I…”
Why did he never bother looking into it? It wasn’t something small, the markings covered a good third of Blitz’s body, but it had been easier to just…
...Assume whatever fit his fantasy.
Assume that everything was fine, that Blitz had chosen everything about himself, was in complete control of the narrative the way a hero should… not that he’d been through something terrible himself that Stolas had never bothered even asking about.
“I… didn’t realize it was quite that bad,” Stolas replied a bit lamely after a moment, hating how Blitz would be able to see his eyes darting about so he forced them to lock with Blitz’s. “The difference in texture didn’t feel as extreme in your usual body.”
“Like you said, us imps are hardy-ass bitches. We can take damn near anything thrown at us, and don’t you fucking forget it.” His coat had remained largely the same, and he fussed with the edge of the sleeve. “I know it’s not gonna win any beauty contests like this.” There were a thousand words packed into just a few, and Stolas could only imagine many of them had come from previous lovers from the nearly imperceptible curl inwards he looked away.
“If… if it’s any consolation, I’m not a particular fan of my human form either.” Stolas flicked at the top of one of his ears, giving a watery smile. “Earholes are far better than having something vulnerable stick out of the side of your head.”
Blitz snorted. “You aren’t wrong on that. Hair too.” He tugged out a few strands of his own, and they rested on his bumpy palm before the wind carried them away. “Who needs it? Just another fuckin’ thing you’d have to take care of. I’ve seen the amount of shampoo Loonie goes through, and I’ll pass.”
“I think it looks nice on you! Although, of course, your normal form is best.”
“You said I could turn it on and off at will, right?”
Stolas nodded. “Just think of how you usually look, and it should-”
A blink of light and a flash of mirror-like mini-crystals that fled up his body and dissolved into thin air later, Blitz was back to the imp that Stolas knew and loved. Red eyes traced more carefully over him now, taking note of the way there was a thin line between white and red. “There we go. Back to my bomb-ass self.” He checked his arms back and front, seeming satisfied with what he saw. “Good, it didn’t make me some kinda freaky-deaky hybrid fuckup.” He glanced up at Stolas. “Yours isn’t half-bad, at least.”
“Oh?” Stolas shifted in the grass, sure his currently-human cheeks had a dot of flush to them even as his mind churned with new knowledge. “I don’t have many opportunities to use it, but I’m glad that you approve.”
“Mm, I’m sure I’ll get used to mine eventually.” There was a pause as Blitz’s knee bounced, and Stolas waited, counting to ten. Usually, Blitz either spilled or changed the subject by then, so eager to fill the air with something. Never content to just let things lay as they were. “Took a while back when it first happened too.”
“I’m… not surprised,” Stolas murmured. “I can’t imagine I would adjust immediately either.” He shifted forward, setting a hand on Blitz’s knee before it twitched away, making his heart skip as Blitz withdrew from the attempt at comfort. “Blitz, I…”
“It’s fine. I know.” There was a decade of resignation in those words, and Stolas wondered how many people had seen the scars and refused to see the man underneath. “You don’t have to act like you-”
“I think you’re beautiful.” The words were almost carried by the wind, but Blitz’s fingers curled into fists and his spikes rose.
“Stolas...”
“It’s the truth. I cannot imagine what you must have gone through, but you’re still here, still making your way in the world no matter what is thrown at you.”
Sparks leapt from the gem and he was faced with the scars thrown into harsher relief, one good eye raised.
“And what about now?”
Stolas took a moment to look- to really look. The way the features settled were different, but a spirit still burned with hottest Hellfire through the eyes and the clenched jaw and the way he held himself, with a slight hunch like he was always prepared to go on the defensive, currently-invisible spikes up.
“It’s you.” He tilted his head, nodding as if to himself. “That’s what matters. I’ll adjust, and your fierce soul comes through.” He glanced back at where he had opened the portal, an idea sparking. “In fact, why don’t we get some practice with these forms together? Are there any missions that you needed to stake out for beforehand that we could work on?”
Blitz stared at him for a moment. “If you freak out and leave me stranded if things go tits-up, I’m shoving a cactus up your ass next month.”
“Deal.”
They didn’t shake on it, but both of them knew Blitz wouldn’t make him do that to an innocent plant anyway.

“Wow.”
“Wow what?” Stolas raised an eyebrow- something he actually had now, which was odd in itself. (The loss of his second set of eyes was a tad more disorienting than he’d imagined it would be, now that he had the time to focus on it.) Currently, they were settled in the branches of a sturdy tree outside of a rather average-looking home, and Blitz whistled as he lowered the binoculars that Stolas had conjured up.
“I thought this might take a try or two, but that bitch is really going at it. The client wanted to make sure her girlfriend was banging somebody else before we took her out, and she’s fucking bigtime. In the client’s bed too, he said hers was the one with the red sheets.”
“Not to put a damper on things, but if your client is in Hell, then being with someone else now wouldn’t necessarily mean she’s cheating, would it?”
Blitz shrugged. “She said it was some dude with a mohawk she suspected, and right now, she’s sucking that dude’s dick. Anything other than that isn’t our problem. Normally we don’t even check up on shit like that, but she said that they’d probably be banging any time we showed up because she lives off mommy’s money, so they’ve got nothing to do but fuck themselves stupid. Goals, honestly.”
Stolas shifted around in the tree, running his fingers over one of the leaves growing from the branch. “I suppose. Do you need to… see anything else?”
Blitz handed him the binoculars. “Nah. Humans are kinda ugly, I’m not getting much out of watching them pork. We can go, we’ll come back and take her out tomorrow.”
“That sounds good,” Stolas said. Blitz easily shimmied down the trunk and hit the grass, but it took Stolas a bit longer to swing his legs over and lower himself down- these legs felt so awkward when it came to doing anything other than walking, and he felt rather like he’d been compressed down from the top like clay, proportions all wrong. The fact that Blitz had already somewhat adjusted to the temporary way of being, well enough to do simple acts of athleticism… it was more than impressive. Stolas’s little shoes scrabbled against the bark before falling the last foot or so, arms pinwheeling as he stumbled before stabilizing himself. Blitz couldn’t help a little snicker.
“Remind me to never take you on a peepnight.”
“...What is a peepnight?”
“Something you’re never going to see, didn’t you just hear me?” Blitz stuffed his hands in his pockets, sauntering over past the mailbox and onto the sidewalk, and Stolas hurried over to catch up to him. “So, that’s over with. Do you want to… I dunno, go get coffee or something? I don’t know if human coffee sucks. Hell coffee is a half and half chance.”
“Mmm, you know, I’m not sure?” Stolas tapped his chin. “I don’t have any human money on me, though.”
“Ah, rummaging around in the dumpster behind some place that has coffee it is, then.”
“...Blitz. No.”
“What? They throw out the fancy bread and shit all the time, and some people don’t finish their-”
Stolas groaned, and it made Blitz snicker.
“You’re a real priss for someone who loves eating my sweaty ass as much as you do.”
“Those things are very different!” Stolas protested, but he couldn’t help a little laugh of his own as Blitz nudged him. The Sin-created crystal sparkled in the sunlight, and he could see a hint of gold underneath the white teeth with canines edged sharper than any normal human’s.
“We’ll figure something out.”
That ‘something’ ended up being ‘sit next to a small pond with ducks after wandering around for twenty minutes’, as small cute animals won out over dumpster diving. Blitz tried throwing handfuls of grass at them, but they just ignored him, so he huffed and crossed his arms.
“Geez, Earth birds are bitchy as Hell ones.”
“Excuse me?” Stolas huffed, playing annoyed. It was what Blitz was clearly aiming for from the way the pupils had darted to him for a second.
“Present company excused.” Blitz paused, before a grin quirked at the side of his lips. “Except for that one time last week-”
“I was in the middle of getting ready!” Stolas shot back, a laugh layered into the way his voice pitched in the peaks of ‘middle’ and ‘ready’. One of the ducks quacked at a baby before nudging it towards the water, and Blitz’s shoulders slumped a little as he settled back with a contented sigh, watching the ripples make their way outwards in the water before fading into nothingness.
Stolas was on the side with the scar. He could see the way Blitz’s skin seemed a bit stiffer as his mouth shifted when looking at the ducklings- whether that was a fact of life back in Hell or just in this disguised form, he didn’t know. He was starting to realize that he didn’t know a lot of things.
A human with bright neon clothing passed by them with a particularly yappy little dog on a leash, and they did a double-take as they spotted Blitz. At that, Blitz bared his teeth, and the human let out a little yelp before slapping a hand over their mouth and trying to walk away as quickly as possible without looking like they were running, as if Blitz was infected somehow.
“Really,” Stolas huffed. “How rude.”
“You practically pissed yourself, you have no room to talk.”
“I did not! I was just… startled,” Stolas said, rubbing his arm before sighing. The fabric felt too loose and too tight all at once, the body not quite fitting right now that he had nothing to do but be aware of it, and the guilt weighing heavy as a neutron star didn’t help. “I shouldn’t have been, though. I’m sorry that I never asked before.”
Blitz blinked up at him before waving a hand. “Eh, it’s not like I go around advertising it to everybody. ‘Come see the freak with the foot-long cock and the 35 percent burn coverage, half off Thursdays if you promise to suck him off’.”
“As much as I admire your length, is there… anything I can do to help when we get back home?”
At that, Blitz stiffened slightly before forcing himself to relax as he raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
Stolas shrugged. “Are there any… lotions, say, that help with stiffness, or places I should be careful of when we’re intimate that I haven’t already noticed?”
Blitz seemed taken aback by that. “Uh, there’s this one cream that used to help but they jacked the price way the fuck up. I wouldn’t mind a bottle of that, if you’re offering.”
“Consider it done.” Stolas leaned forward, one hand hovering in the air as if to cup the cheek, and time seemed frozen with only the gentle sway of the wind on the dark hair before him until Blitz shifted ever-so-slightly to the side, and Stolas closed the gap to let Blitz’s face rest against Stolas’s palm. His thumb rubbed over the textured skin, memorizing the way that it looked and felt, especially as he caught the slight hitch on Blitz’s chest when he didn’t pull away immediately as the scars could no longer be ignored. Didn’t shy from them, from the proof of Blitz’s strength and will to survive.
“You’re an incredible man, Blitz.”
“Mmm.” It wasn’t a word, but it didn’t need to be. Stolas could feel the warmth of blood below his hand, the pale off-white skin of his own a contrast to the rich brown. Even the fainter color of the scar was something he could see adding to a painting to capture a moment in nature, reminiscent of driftwood. Soft, warm breath huffed out against his wrist, and Blitz looked up at him with too-white eyes before a slight muted purr slipped into the air around them, the imp Stolas loved slipping through and melding with the hardy body resting against his hand.
Perhaps it wasn’t the story that Stolas had imagined, but as he shifted closer and felt Blitz relax against his touch while he kept himself steady, he was determined to find a way to share the pen so they could write themselves a happy ending.

THE MARTYR TRYPHON (250)
Tumblr media
The Martyr Tryphon was born in Phrygia, one of the districts of Asia Minor, in the village of Lampsacus. From his early years the Lord granted him the power to cast out demons and to heal various maladies. He once saved the inhabitants of his native city from starvation. Saint Tryphon, by the power of his prayer, turned back a plague of locusts that were devouring the grain and devastating the fields.
Saint Tryphon gained particular fame by casting out an evil spirit from the daughter of the Roman emperor Gordian (238-244). Helping everyone in distress, he asked only one thing from them: faith in Jesus Christ, by Whose grace he healed them.
When the emperor Decius (249-251) assumed the imperial throne, he began a fierce persecution of Christians. Someone reported to the commander Aquilinus that Saint Tryphon was boldly preaching faith in Christ, and that he led many to Baptism. The saint was arrested and subjected to interrogation, during which he fearlessly confessed his faith.
He was subjected to harsh tortures: they beat him with clubs, raked his body with iron hooks, they scorched his flesh with fire, and led him through the city, after iron nails were hammered into his feet. Saint Tryphon bravely endured all the torments without complaint.
Finally, he was condemned to beheading with a sword. The holy martyr prayed before his execution, thanking God for strengthening him in his sufferings. He also asked the Lord to bless those who should call upon his name for help. Just as the soldiers raised the sword over the head of the holy martyr, he surrendered his soul into the hands of God. This event occurred in the city of Nicea in the year 250.
Christians wrapped the holy body of the martyr in a clean shroud and wanted to bury him in the city of Nicea, where he suffered, but Saint Tryphon in a vision commanded them to take his body to his native land to the village of Lampsacus. Later on, the relics of Saint Tryphon were transferred to Constantinople, and then to Rome.
In Russia, Saint Tryphon is regarded as the patron saint of birds. There is a story that when Tsar Ivan the Terrible was out hunting, his falconer carelessly allowed the Tsar’s favorite falcon to fly away. The Tsar ordered the falconer Tryphon Patrikeiev to find the bird within three days, or else he would be put to death. Tryphon searched all through the forest, but without luck.
On the third day, exhausted by long searching, he returned to Moscow to the place called Marinaya Grove. Overcome with weariness, he lay down to rest, fervently praying to his patron saint, the Martyr Tryphon, for help.
In a dream he saw a youth on a white horse, holding the Tsar’s falcon on his hand. The youth said, “Take the lost bird, go to the Tsar and do not grieve.” When he awakened, the falconer actually spotted the falcon on a pine tree. He took it to the Tsar and told him about the miraculous help he received from the holy Martyr Tryphon. Grateful to Saint Tryphon for saving his life, Tryphon Patrikeiev built a chapel on the spot where the saint appeared. Later on, he also built a church dedicated to the holy Martyr Tryphon in Moscow.
The holy martyr is greatly venerated in the Russian Orthodox Church as the heavenly protector of Moscow. Many Russian icons depict the saint holding a falcon on his arm.

MARK 14:10-42
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him. 12 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?" 13 And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14 Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?" ' 15 Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us. 16 So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover. 17 In the evening He came with the twelve. 18 Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, "Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me." 19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, "Is it I?" And another said, "Is it I?" 20 He answered and said to them, "It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. 21 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born. 22 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."  23Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, "This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. 25 Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:'I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered.' 28 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee. 29 Peter said to Him, "Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be." 30 Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." 31 But he spoke more vehemently, "If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all said likewise. 32 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34 Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." 35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will." 37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 39 Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40 And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. 41 Then He came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.
JOHN 3:11-20
11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, 12 not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother's righteous. 13 Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. 20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

My Hero Academia Main 3 Boys x Reader
Ch. 20 A Fight in Hosu City
A/N: Anther late post, but at least I'm getting back into the groove(: Hope you enjoy!
Masterlist
Tumblr media
When your party arrived in Hosu City it was sundown. Endeavor had assembled a small team of his sidekicks to accompany him on the trip, along with you interns, causing everyone to travel in two separate vehicles. The ride there was spent in silence, save for the few moments Endeavor had spoken about the parameters of the mission. Thoughts drifting back to what you learned as you exited the car, preparing yourself for what was to come.
“What exactly are we going to Hosu for?”
Todoroki had spoken up from his spot beside you in the backseat, causing Endeavor to glance at him through the rearview mirror.
“Hosu was the last area the Hero Killer was said to have attacked in-- based on what we have gathered, he will most likely still be in the city.”
“What’s still keeping him there?” You question without thinking, feeling taken aback as Endeavor’s attention turned to you.
“In the last seven cities, the Hero Killer has left at least 4 injured or killed. So far, in Hosu, he has only managed one injury-- just one. Assuming he’ll keep his track record, we’ll catch him.”
You involuntarily begin to think about your class representative; Iida had seemed a bit off these last few days, and you couldn’t blame him--not with everything that happened.
News about Ingenium spread like wildfire, as the media desperately tried to keep the latest coverage on the Hero Killer and his victims. With how much you knew Iida loved and looked up to his elder brother, the constant reminder must have been dealing a number on his mental health.
Wait, wasn’t Iida also in Hosu, for his own internship?
You stare down in your lap, playing with your fingers in hopes to get rid of your nerves-- you can only hope Iida will be alright, that he’ll stay safe.
Shaking the memory away, you spring back to the present; masses of people steer clear of the heroes, walking in a group down the street. As whispers begin to flood by, Endeavor made the quick decision to split the group up--you, Todoroki, and Endeavor, while the three sidekicks formed another--trying to dwindle the attention you’ve already received.
Besides the gaping stares from the public, there was hardly any activity in Hosu-- the peace much more prominent during this patrol versus the night before. Glancing around to look at the unfamiliar faces, you couldn’t help mirroring the smiles most of them held; the people were safe and happy, and you hoped it stayed that way.
Beside you, Shoto watched as you looked around the area with a smile, wondering just why your face held that expression. He too took in the sights around him, only being able to see normal people going about their business. You were pretty strange, but he had to admit you were pretty much naturally happy; he hadn’t really cared to notice too much before, but after the sports festival--after you gave him some support he never realized he needed--he found himself noticing more and more.
The same could be said for you, but it seemed you were noticing him for being someone that was somewhat similar to yourself; it wasn’t every day you met someone like you--a kid of a top pro hero, with a little bit of a broken past.
Someone who could understand you, even if it was just slightly.
Speaking of the trauma, Endeavor marched on with his head held high, and you felt the bitterness creep in.
A great hero meant nothing if he wasn’t a great person.
Todoroki bumped shoulders with you, and you tilt your head curiously in his direction. He just gave a slight nod, and even though you weren’t completely sure what he meant, you gave a wide grin back; thoughts of terror parents leaving your mind as you forced yourself to think back to the task at hand.
Unbest known to you, Todoroki had watched the smile slip from your face, and in attempts to quell the nervous thoughts--which, what else could you be frowning about--wanted to provide some reassurance.
Endeavor’s sudden stop had you quickly following suit, in an attempt to not run straight into his back, wondering the reason. There were still quite a few people amongst the streets, the stars starting to become visible as the night came to life. Before you or Todoroki could question him, you felt the tremors of the earth below.
‘An earthquake? What could be-’
Smoke rose from behind the buildings, sirens blaring towards the center of the city. No other words were needed, the three of you quickly rushing off to reach the destination--eager to understand what could be happening. Endeavor was nowhere near as fast as he was previously, most likely allowing you and Shoto to keep up with him in this real, unknown event.
This didn’t seem like the Hero Killer, according to all the news coverage on the villain, he acted in areas that would draw him the least amount of attention.
What good would he gain from causing a panic, smack dab into the middle of the city, do?
Once you were closer than you were before, yet not close enough to see what was happening, a buzzing from your pocket caught your attention.
Normally, you would’ve left it alone--seeing as how you had more important things to worry about, but the confusion on Todoroki’s face as he pulled out his own device had you doing the same.
“There’s trouble ahead! I’ll show you what it means to be a real hero, Shoto!”
Ignoring the pro, you opened a message from Deku, eyebrows furrowing as the only thing you read was his current location. You read the address and your heart began to pound--it stated he was in Hosu, not too far from where you were.
He wasn’t interning in Hosu, there could be no way he was anywhere near here. Plus, he never sent anything without an explanation, and knowing the way Izuku is, you would get plenty of it.
He wouldn’t be so, so vague.
Not unless he had to be…
“His location?” Todoroki mumbled, eyes growing wide as he came to the realization.
Quickly locking eyes, you both nodded in agreement before turning around and running the way you came.
“Hey, wait! Where the hell are you two going!?”
“An alleyway at 4210 Echo Street!” You shout back.
“If you finish with what you’re doing, or see any extra pros, send them there. I’m leaving you here to take care of this trouble, I’m sure you can handle it yourself.” Shoto adds.
With that taken care of, the pair of you make your way to the location, going as quickly as you can with the help of your quirks.
The crowd thinned out as they were trying to get away from the chaos, you could see flames rising higher than before somewhere over towards your right--getting smaller as you left them behind. When you couldn’t spot any more civilians--or heroes for that matter--you knew you were getting close. The unease you felt only grew, your heart pounding uncomfortably and not from fatigue.
You heard muffled words coming from one area, and you willed your legs to move faster.
‘There, he’s gotta be there!-’
The opening of the alleyway allowed you to see a man hovering over a person, who lay fallen on the ground. It was dark all the way down, no bright lights shining through, the only source of light coming from the fire from the distance, the moon, and the few buildings that were still lit up. The alleyway itself was pretty narrow, meaning there wouldn’t be a lot of chances to run away, or even hide, without leaving yourself open. Three bodies were scattered on the ground, yet what worried you the most was the large katana that was held, directly over someone’s head-
That was Iida, in less than a few moments Iida was going to be stabbed.
“GET AWAY!”
‘That scream-’
Without thinking, you wind-up your fist and aim a hardened beam of light right at his face. At the same time, a burst of flames shot out to your left, the warmth quickly spreading throughout your body.
The man jumped out of the way, dodging both attacks that were thrown at him. You grind your teeth, allowing your hands and arms to be coated with hardened light, ready to attack as needed. Shoto’s flames burned brightly out of the corner of your eye, but you don’t give yourself time to dwell on the fact he uses his flames. There were more important things to worry about right now.
Todoroki felt the same, trying to think of the best way to handle this situation, trying to make sure he can get everyone out safe.
“Midoriya, you need to give more details in times like this.”
You took your own moment to assess the situation, looking more closely at the ones sprawled out on the ground; Izuku, Iida, and a hero you’ve never seen before--must be a pro from the area. Deku was the only one without blood or visible injury on his body, yet he wouldn’t be on the ground unless he was forced to be-
You stare directly at the infamous Hero Killer as he stares back, a shiver running through your body at his intense gaze. What quirk could this guy possibly have--it wasn’t like Endeavor went into detail about it.
“Yea,” you nod in agreement, “we were almost too late to stop this guy.”
“Hakamata, Todoroki, not you too.” Iida spits out, his voice heavy with emotion.
“How- how did you both get here--wait, you’re using your left side, Todoroki?” Deku gasped.
“How did we get here?”
“I wonder that too,” you finish, “took us a moment to understand what the heck your message was about.”
“Yea, next time, try to send more than just your specific location.”
“But you aren’t one to send cryptic messages, not without good reason. That’s when we figured out something was wrong.” You speak as you crouch into a fighting position.
You bring both of your arms out in front of you, side-by-side, as you let out a large blast of hardened light. At the same time, Todoroki sends out a layer of ice from his foot, causing the Hero Killer to have to jump up out of the way, but also having to focus on dodging your attack. He managed to evade both, but as he jumped further away from you and the injured, it allowed Todoroki to raise the others off the ground on blocks of ice, and bring them closer--farther away from Stain.
“But it’ll all be okay!” You put yourself in front of the injured, staring determinedly at the villain.
“The pros will be here any minute!” Todoroki adds, sending another large blast of fire at Stain as he too stands in front of the others and right by your side.
“You’re just what they said you were,” he glares, “but you won’t be taking any more lives, Hero Killer.”
“Your terror ends here,” you agree, “we will stop you.”
“Todoroki, y/n! You guys can’t let him get your blood! I- I think he controls his enemies’ actions by swallowing it! That’s how he got us!”
“So, he ingests blood to keep people from moving?”
You crinkle your nose in disgust from Todoroki’s assumption.
“That explains the blades. We just have to make sure we don’t get hit, Shoto.”
“Yeah, we’ll keep our distance-”
Todoroki gets cut off as a blade gets thrown at his face, leaving a small cut along his cheek--his blood drawn.
“You have good friends, Ingenium!”
Stain rushes at you both, and you quickly jump in front of Shoto to create a light barrier, in hopes of throwing him back. Stain uses your shield as leverage, kicking off from it and jumping over you--blade angled to slice your back, and it would have if it wasn’t for the block of ice his sword lodge into instead.
You swivel your body, aiming above the ice with your arm encased in hardened light to try to backhand him. Stain jumps away, avoiding the blow, using the ice to flip into the air, grabbing onto Todoroki’s shirt.
“Shoto!”
He was too busy to notice a blade that was thrown in the air, sailing down straight towards him. You quickly maneuver away from the fire he used to send Stain back, and quickly shoot a beam to knock the blade far away from Todoroki and Stain towards the opening of the alleyway.
Back against Shoto’s side, you desperately aim at Stain while he cuts through a large mountain of ice that was sent his way. He was too fast, all you and Shoto could do was keep him at bay, while he monstrously dodged light and fire, while simultaneously cutting through ice.
You send beam after beam, only to let out a cry of pain as one of his throwing blades lodges itself deeply into your arm.
“Luminary!”
“Y/n!”
Deku couldn’t see much of the fight firsthand--the way he was lying on his back only amounted him to seeing the bursts of bright light and flames. But he heard your shouts of pain and he found himself panicking, he needed to move.
He needed to help, now.
Shoto took a split second to glance over, to see blood dripping down the side of your arm. He willed more ice to come and help block his right side--the side you were standing next to. He needed to cover you, to make sure you wouldn’t be in the villain’s line of sight.
You used both arms, even if your left was screaming in pain, and grunted out as you shot a large, curved beam into the air. It was as if you were sending a wave of energy, the light curving to look like a thick, glowing, gigantic boomerang--solid enough to knock into Stain and send him back over the ice.
“Just stop it.. Why are you all doing this? His fight is with me. I inherited my brother’s name! I’m the one that should stop him! THE HERO KILLER IS MINE-”
“You’re Ingenium now? Strange, the Ingenium I knew before never had that look on his face.” Todoroki grunted.
You extend your light in your hands, like a pole, swinging it at Stain. He just stepped on it, using it as a walkway to get closer to you, however, you quickly willed it to become intangible and he fell through. Getting knocked back as you shot a smaller, more compact beam at him, along with getting a barrage of flames from Shoto.
“You’ve got a dark side,” Shoto continued, breathing heavily, “Guess my family isn’t the only one.”
“Ingenium was a beacon of light to everyone around him, wasn’t he?” You question, desperately sucking in as much air as you could, “Isn’t that why you looked up to him so much, Iida?”
Your body was overheating, however, the cold air produced on Todoroki’s right side helping you to stay cool immensely yet you were sweating profusely; the water leaving your system only causing you to overheat even more--the blood leaving your body from your deep wound wasn’t helping either.
Todoroki knew he was in better shape, but he began to grow frustrated; how can he manage to get out of this one? The pros were taking their sweet time, and now you were already injured. If there wasn’t an odd number of people, he would’ve had the both of you grab the wounded and have fled. All he could do was keep the hero killer pushed back, hoping to find a breakthrough point somewhere.
Luckily, even as unlikely as it seemed, your quirks complimented each other--while both suited for long range attacks, yours helped with more precise and accurate shots, while he was your large field of coverage.
Hopefully that would be enough.
“Be careful, y/n! Todoroki!” Deku yells.
All the ice Todoroki had formed as a barrier was smashed into tiny fragments in an instant, Stains guttural voice breaking through to reach your ears.
“You blocked your own field of vision, against an opponent who’s faster than you--rookie mistake, kids.”
“Come get me then-” Todoroki grunts, cut off as two throwing knives were thrown straight into his left arm.
His flames immediately die out from the sudden attack, and you extend both arms out to send out blasts of light towards Stain.
One hits him directly, but your small victory falls short as he grips his hand around the beam and catches himself. The burning of his skin can be heard from below, yet he wastes no time in throwing a blade at you before falling through the now untouchable light, raising up his katana as he heads down towards Shoto, blade raised high to strike.
“You’re good kids, unlike him.” Stain grins sadistically.
The smaller blade lands right in the shoulder of the same arm he cut before, causing you to become distracted by the pain. Shoto’s arm dangles at his side as he desperately watches Stain get closer, until his body angles away from Todoroki, over you, then over the pro hero on the ground.
“Watch out!” Shoto shouts desperately.
You try to do something, but Stain was moving too fast--you wouldn’t make it.
Maybe you wouldn’t have made it, but someone did. A blur of green energy flies by, causing you to sway at the force.
“Izuku!”
“Midoriya!”
Deku grabs onto Stain, somehow freed from the quirk he was placed under, and drags him against the alley’s wall; the cement crumbling from the impact of Stain's body sliding across it.
“I’m not sure why, but I’m able to move again!” Izuku yells across the alley.
“So he’s got some sort of time limit?”
“No,” Native answers Todoroki, “if that’s the case, that kid should have been the last to be freed. I still can’t move a muscle.”
“It has to be something about multiple people then; it could be that he gets weaker the more he uses his quirk.” You gasp out, clutching your arm.
Izuku falls, Stain landing behind him as they touch the ground. You go to yell out for him but Todoroki beats you to it, sending out a large pillar of ice to separate the two. You feel yourself leaning closer, enjoying the way it cooled you down.
A small stream of steam rose from your body, your body temperature steadily rising. You weren’t near your limit, but the blood loss was speeding up the process, and you were nervous on what would happen if this were to drag on for much longer. Thankfully, you were situated on Shoto’s ice side, which was helping--even if just a smidge. But it wasn’t enough, this fight needed to end, quick.
Izuku crawls over to you, coughing as he squats beside you, still a bit too sluggish to stand fully upright at the moment.
“He swallows people’s blood to freeze them, yet I was the one who was freed first.”
“People limit? Blood type?” You throw out the ideas.
“Yea, either his quirk becomes weaker the more he uses it, or even the amount ingested could play a part. Or, like you said, blood type.” Izuku mumbles, eyes calculating as if he was running all the possibilities through his mind.
The victims of his quirk list off their blood type, just in case it could be the last suggestion, and you find out both you and Izuku share your type--type O.
It was a long shot, but those were the only things you had in your corner right now. You needed to think of a way to get everyone out of here, to make sure they got out safe. Both you and Todoroki were bleeding pretty heavily, but not enough for dire medical attention. As long as there could be a defensive position, you should be okay for now.
Stain was just so strong.
He excelled in both offensive and defensive skills, constantly countering your combined attack as if it were nothing. You would need to have a good offense/defense play if you wanted to have a chance.
The way Deku flung Stain around, which you were still in awe over by the way; it was like he embodied his quirk overnight, it was a clear choice that he could help offensively. Yet was that really the right choice? You guys could probably end up fighting him all night. Weren’t the pros supposed to be coming soon? But there was a panic in the middle of the city, who knows how long that would take them. How long could you all hold out until exhaustion or blood loss?
“It doesn’t really help us to know how his quirk works, though.”
“I thought we could hurry and carry those two out of here,” Shoto sighed, “but it’s no good--he’s too fast.”
He was too fast, even if you all tried to run off, he would only chase you down. You would need some sort of barrier, some sort of distraction--
That’s when it hit you, your face immediately snapping to look at the boy to your left.
“What if there was a way?”
“What?” Deku calls from your right.
“Listen, he’s too fast, that’s for sure. But if there was a way to distract him--we may have a way to get the others out to safety.”
“What do you mean-”
You snap your face to look at Izuku midway through Todoroki’s question.
“If one of us would be able to distract him, the others can get out safely and get to the pros, right?”
“Yeah but-”
“If I allow my body to become light, I’m faster than him. I can get close enough to him, then I can keep him at bay with a light barrier or something while you both run to get those two far away from here.”
“No,” Todoroki frowned, “absolutely not.”
“There’s no way we’ll let you do that,” Deku agrees, “What happens when you turn back? You’ll be all alone with him, and at that point, he’ll be able to hurt you since he can now once again be able to physically touch you--and that’s if you don’t pass out from water loss first.”
You grit your teeth, you know they were right, but what else was there to do?
“Does it matter if you guys are all safe-”
“Yes, of course it matters.” Shoto raises his voice, surprising you.
“We’ll do this together, okay? You both have already lost too much blood... The best way to do this is to have me to distract him with close combat, and you both support me from behind. We can hold him long enough, just until the pros arrive.”
“Okay... While it’s still a big risk, we can do this. No one gets left behind.” Todoroki glances at you.
“We’ll protect them.” You agree, thoughts of self-sacrifice replaced with ones of protection.
“Together.” Deku affirms, standing tall as he lets his energy ride throughout his body.
You and Shoto match defensive poses, ready for the fight--ready to defend and conquer.
“Three against one, huh? This fight won’t be easy..” Stain mutters, dropping down to his own offensive position.
A moment of silence echoes loudly throughout the area, only to be broken as Deku uses his quirk to bounce off the sides of the buildings that surrounded you.
He gets in close, desperately fighting to land a hit on the villain. While Shoto uses his ice to defend him, you use large beams of light to act as a shield for him. You grit your teeth in frustration as Stain seems faster than before, his movements more fluid and graceful as he manages to evade every hit.
Desperation and distress clings to the surrounding area, both sides of the fight trying to get the upper hand. The intense battle has only been going on for a few moments, but to you it feels like forever.
Izuku gets in close to try to hit Stain from behind, only to have the villain kick him back; bringing his blade in close and managing to swipe at his shin. Staggering back, Izuku falls to the ground while Stain is upon him once more, the air around him more sinister than before.
It feels like it’s going on in slow motion, turning your head to see Shoto panting hard, clutching his shaking arm as he tries to raise it. In a panic, without thinking, you will your body to turn into light and race in front of Izuku.
You get a brief flashback of the USJ incident; you had done the same before when Izuku had rushed off, and was about to be grabbed by Shigaraki. You had thrown him out of the way, and put yourself into his position. Thankfully the pros were there to stop the villains before it was too late, but there weren’t here now. You were here, you needed to act.
Help him.
You stop directly in front of Izuku, creating a small, thin barrier of light behind you which surrounds him, and send off a large blast at the villain point blank. Stain, not suspecting you to be right there, was caught off guard as you managed to land your first real hit on him all night. Flying back, a barrage of fire kept you and Stain separated, separate shouts of your name went through your ears without comprehension, You were now swinging your fists repeatedly, sending attack after attack to keep him back. Through the flames you spot Stain licking his sword, and in turn Izuku grunts behind you, and that’s when you knew he'd been rendered immobilized.
The sweat pools down your body, fatigue from the overuse of your quirk catching on as you had expended plenty of energy by converting your body into light. So much so that when you clip Stain with a bolt of light in his side, you don’t see how he manages to use that momentum and flings a knife straight at you, slicing your cheek.
The light that had surrounded Izuku vanished once you lost focus, unable to dodge the hero killer further as he grabs on to the front of your hero costume, and leans in to lick your cheek. You try to convert your body into light once more, to turn up the heat, anything, but you’re too slow; the slimy feeling of his ridged tongue swipes across your face, and you aren’t even given a moment to grimace as your body immediately freezes.
“Y/N!”
Your body was shutting down, despite yelling at yourself to move, your body wouldn’t listen. Your legs give out, unable to hold yourself up without feeling, and you tumble harshly to the ground. Falling onto your side, you suck in a breath as your head smacks directly into the concrete. Stars enter your vision, black pooling at the edges as you try to blink away the feeling of passing out. You feel heat above you, and horror struck as you realize you left Shoto all alone to deal with the villain. Tears pool in your eyes as you try to move, you couldn’t leave him to defend everyone by himself!
Izuku was panicking behind you, watching you fall to the ground like a lifeless doll. He knew you were alive, the small groans of pain that came from you was proof enough, but it still scared him. He was able to see perfectly as Stain viciously grinned down at the pair of you, and thoughts of seeing you getting stabbed caused his heart to twist, breaths coming out in short bursts.
Thankfully, fire and ice separated the pair of you from the villain, and Stain in turn focused all of his attention on the only one still standing. Your head was angled just enough to see Todoroki, despite all of his ice in the way. He looked frustrated, yelling out something to Iida as he continued his defensive attacks; he was holding his own well enough, until Stain was able to bypass his field of ice and lifted his sword to aim right at his torso.
“Has anyone told you, you rely on your quirk too much? Makes you a carless fighter!” Steins ruthless words echo dauntingly in the alleyway.
Fear weighs on you as the blade inches closer and closer--if it lands, it would just about cut his arm clean off. The beating of your heart pounds in your ears, till all you hear is a white noise--the sounds of your own screams not even registering as all you could do was watch.
“TODOROKI!”
“SHOTO!”
“Recipro BURST!”
A strangled cry of relief leaves your lips as Iida uses his leg to slice the sword in half, saving Shoto from a terrible fate. Iida manages to send Stain flying back, breath heavy as he stares at the ground.
“You’re free too? Guess his quirk isn’t as great as we thought it was.” Todoroki hums.
“Todoroki, Midoriya, Hakamata--this has nothing to do with you. I apologize.”
“Not this again.” Deku whispers.
“Iida, please-” Your plea gets cut off as Iida stands proud.
“I’m okay, but I won’t let the three of you shed any more blood for me.”
You hear Stain’s wicked laugh as he tells Iida there’s no use in pretending--that a person can’t change in a span of a few minutes. Shoto spits back at the villain, telling Iida he shouldn’t listen to anything he says, while Iida shrugs him off.
“He’s right, I don’t deserve to call myself a hero,” he clenches his fist, and you gasp at the blood that runs heavily down his arm, “even so, there’s no way I can back down. If I give up now, then the name Ingenium will die.”
“PATHETIC.”
Shoto puts himself in front of Iida, sending off a blast of fire as another battle breaks out. You grit your teeth in frustration, desperately wanting to help. You hated not feeling like you could do anything; she whispers in your ear, calling you worthless and pathetic, and the fear kicks in double time. You weren’t proving her wrong, you weren’t proving anyone wrong. You were worthless-- you couldn’t even save your friends; you were weak, you were no good, you were--
“Hey, you did amazing.”
Her voice stopped, the harsh words going away as you locked eyes with Izuku’s bright green ones, a smile on his face. He gently, and quietly, lifted your body up and placed you sitting up along the wall; it was a more comfortable position, and you felt the tiny aches in your body lessen as the pressure released. He brings a thumb up to your cheek, wiping at the blood and sweat to try to clean the cut on your face as he speaks.
“Amazing, but you overdid it-- you’re sweating way too much. Just rest here, you’re going to be okay. I’ll protect you.”
The determination and fire in his eyes make your heart flutter--his grin a beacon of hope. You trust him, one hundred percent. You smile sweetly back, hoping he understood just how much you believe in him.
“Yeah, be careful, Izuku.”
He shakily stands, leaning on the wall above you for support as he determines the damage done to his body. Your eyes filter down, and you see how purple and swollen his leg is--his quirk must have broken it.
He doesn’t let that stop him, his body glowing as his power surges through him, and he pushes off towards Stain. Simultaneously, Iida attacks him on the opposite end, both able to land devastating blows to knock him back. Todoroki countered, sending a large flame to the killer while Iida had given one last solid kick--effectively knocking him out.
Shoto’s ice imprisoned Stain while also bringing both boys towards his direction, and he yells out for them to stand and fight, before he notices the hero killer is unresponsive.
Your finger twitches, catching your attention as you feel your body slowly regaining feeling. The feeling was weird, like white static filtering through your body; like what happens after you’ve been sitting one way too long and your limb falls asleep, once you move it that tingling sensation is overwhelming.
Trying to stand was a pain, you let out a huff of breath in annoyance as your legs wobbled. Once you were upright and stable, you shakily made your way over to the three boys.
“He’s got to be knocked out after all that, right?”
“Then let’s restrain him and get him to the street.”
“Maybe we can find some rope nearby?” You question, only for their heads to snap over to you.
“You’re up and moving, good.” Todoroki sighs, shoulders relaxing as everyone seems to be safe.
“y/n!,” Izuku grins, “good thinking, hopefully there will be something to tie him up with. We should probably take his weapons too.”
“Good idea.”
You force Izuku to sit down next to Iida despite his complaints, and you go to try to find some rope. Iida quickly stands, undeterred by your words as you insist he should rest and goes with you to the trash bins to help look.
“I need to help out, in any way I can.” His voice was thick with emotion like before, but this time it was less angsty, and more sorrowful. You allow him, knowing that he must be beating himself up on the inside.
“Hey Iida?”
“Yes?”
“I'm sorry.”
He stares at you bewildered, eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
“Hakamata-”
“I should’ve been a better friend… So I’m sorry.” You speak softly.
Iida bit his lip as his gaze lowered.
“I should be sorry; if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be in this mess.”
You nudge his shoulder with your own, careful to not agitate either his nor your own wounds.
“What are friends for?”
The shared smile was enough for the both of you, and you quickly went to work searching for rope. You pulled out a long piece from the dumpster, and laughed in triumph. Shoto had gotten Stain down from his ice wall, and brought him over towards the both of you as he finished removing all of his weapons. Handing the rope off to Shoto, he quickly got to work on tying him up. You see the Pro Hero now moving around, lifting up Deku by giving him a piggyback ride. You smile, grateful Izuku wouldn’t have to put too much pressure on his broken ankle.
“We’re lucky someone threw this in the dumpster.”
“What are the odds, huh?” You chuckle.
“Todoroki, I can drag him from here!” Iida shouts.
“Are you forgetting your arms are messed up?”
“Yeah, it’s okay Iida. Just rest please.”
With a sigh, he reluctantly agrees, and you all make your way out of the alley towards the street and stand on the sidewalk.
“Hey!” a shout makes you all jump, looking across the street, “what are you doing here, boy?”
“Gran Torino!”
Looking back and forth between Deku and the man, you end up gasping as he flies over, kicking Izuku straight in the face.
“Who’s this?” Shoto asks, unfazed.
“Gran Torino, the hero I’m interning with…” he trails off, looking back at the hero, “I don’t get it, how did you find us?”
“I was told to come here, I have no idea what’s going on, but I’m glad you’re not dead, at least.”
More voices filter in, a group of pros rounding the corner all at once. One hero spoke up, uncertainty laced within his words.
“Endeavor told us to come here, but… children?”
The heroes begin to fret over your appearances, until one gasps out.
“Hey, isn’t that… the Hero Killer?”
“What?”
“I’ll get the police on the line!”
Standing with Shoto and Izuku, once Native had carefully set him back down, you look back as Iida calls out.
“You guys, you were all hurt because of me,” He bows, not allowing you guys to see the tears in his eyes, “I’m truly sorry… I was just so angry, I couldn’t see anything else…”
“Iida… I already said you didn’t need to apologize,” you sigh, biting your lip in sorrow, “I’m sorry; I didn’t realize how much pain you were going through.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry too, Iida. You were going through so much by yourself, and I couldn’t tell… Even though I’m your friend.” Izuku declares, just as emotional.
The tears start to fall down Iida’s face more rapidly, body shaking in silent sobs.
“Hey, pull yourself together. You’re the class rep.”
“Right…” He agrees with Shoto, rubbing his eyes with the minimal movement he had in his arms.
You let out a sigh of relief, your body cooling down naturally, slowly but surely. You weren’t steaming anymore, the sweat on your body already having been evaporated or dried. However, you were still scarily warm, feeling the effects of being dehydrated and overheated. All you had to do was wait for the ambulance to arrive, and then you could drink as much cold, mouthwatering liquid as you wanted.
The sense of peace that was returning to you immediately faded as Gran Torino shouted to get down. Your heart fell as you stared up a winged creature; one that looked like Nomu back at the USJ. It was huge--large wings protruding from his back as he swooped down towards the group. You see it heading straight towards you, and you try to grab onto Izuku to drag him to the ground with you, but it was all in vain. A large talon-like foot grabbed you, and because of the way you were angled when you were trying to duck the monster ended up grabbing your neck before hauling back towards the sky.
You choked, hands reaching up to try to pry the talons away from your throat, but it wouldn’t budge. White hot fear pounded at you as your windpipe was blocked, unable to breath or move in his hold. The scream came out garbled and distorted, and you encased your hands in light as hot as you could go. It didn’t affect him, even as the smell of burnt skin made you want to gag, it acted as if it was unbothered. Tears built in your eyes, lack of oxygen--along with the rest of your injuries--catching up as you stop thrashing about, your vision fading slowly.
Just then, the creature stopped midair, the grip around your throat letting up, letting you take in a shuddering breath before coughing.
“The word hero has lost all meaning in this society; this world is overrun by fakes and criminals like you who chase petty dreams!”
You look up in surprise to see Stain above you, bringing down a knife as he plunges it straight into the creature's head. Falling towards the ground at a faster rate, you feel his arm snake around your waste, pulling you tight against his chest as he takes the brunt of the fall.
“You must all be purged.”
You’re astonished, unable to understand what exactly had happened once the rough landing came to a stop. You’re now on the ground, Stain setting you down on the sidewalk before sitting up, crouching before you and the now dead creature. You let out a whimper of fear, the crazed look on his face scaring you more than the actual Nomu creature had done.
“Everything that I do, is to create a stronger society.”
The heroes behind you spoke about getting ready, how they needed to be careful now that he had a hostage, and the fact that you were that hostage hit you like a truck. Sweat from nerves rolled down your face, heart beating fast as Stain kept you down on the ground with the same arm he used to save you. You struggled, and in turn it only made him put more pressure, making it impossible for you to get away. You thrash around, holding in tears. This wasn’t the time to cry, you needed to find a way to escape--
Endeavor’s voice echoed in the air, and a switch flipped in Stain’s mind. He let you go, standing to face the number 2 Pro.
“Endeavor.. You false hero, I’ll make this right! These streets must run with the blood of hypocrites! Hero: I will reclaim that word. Come one, just try and stop me you fakes! There is only one man I'll let kill me, he's a true hero; ALLMIGHT IS WORTHY.”
The look in his eyes, and the aura he radiated, had everyone frozen in fear. He walked slowly over towards the pro, who looked more taken aback than scared, until he stopped in his tracks. The knife fell from his hands and his breathing slowed; did he pass out? What is going on?
You couldn’t stay awake to find out, as your adrenaline faded, so did your vision, and finally you gave in; collapsing back letting your eyes flutter close as you passed out on the cold ground.

Love Like You by two_drama_nerds_in_a_boat | @homeworkforpigeons
“Jane Kirk is sixteen, a sophomore at the Riverside public high school, and she’s never left Iowa. Not really. Visits to Starfleet California with her mom when she was a toddler don’t count, and   she doesn’t let herself think about Tarsus at all. To be honest, she’s rather blocked out most of Tarsus - they tell her it’s the Human brain’s reaction to stress, fight-or-flight scenarios. But even though some of her memories might not be great, she knows she’s never met a Vulcan before.
Right now, there’s a Vulcan standing right next to her on the sidewalk.
And God, she’s pretty.”

The alarm’s ringing again. Loud enough to wake her up.
She doesn't want to wake up. She never wants to wake up.
“Fuck,” she mutters, kicking her covers away and rolling out of bed. She doesn’t really have any reason to be upset, other than being woken up early - but she’s the one who set the alarm, so really, she shouldn’t be that frustrated at all.
“Stupid past me,” she mutters. “Jane Tiberius Kirk of last night, what were you thinking?”
Jane Kirk is sixteen years old. Practically an adult, she thinks, as most teenagers often do. Of course, Jane’s thoughts are a bit more justified, in this department. Raising yourself will do that to you. After your Dad dies on the day of your birth, and your Mom remarries an asshole and then abandons you, and then your brother ditches you on top of it all, you start to make your own breakfast and fold your own socks and make your own deadlines and shit. It happens.
Every day during the school year she wakes up like this, to the pinging of her alarm
She didn’t used to be like this; preferred sleeping in, getting to school an hour or two late. Sometimes not going at all. But a shitty report card gave Frank yet another excuse to call her a waste of space, and was the final tipping point for shipping her away for good.
(Tarsus… wasn’t great. To put it very, very vaguely. She was sent there at fourteen by a stepfather desperate to get rid of her, and she’s determined to never, ever go back. She knows it’s over, now, knows it can’t hurt her. That’s what the therapist told her. But it’s still there.)
It’s not the first day of school today, thank God. Just another mid-year one. A day of no importance. It’s almost insignificant enough that Jane might just consider skipping, except she knows she can’t skip, not after what happened on Tarsus two years ago. So she opens one of her dresser drawers and fishes around for clothes.
Jane Kirk is sixteen. She cuts her own hair with her mom’s bad kitchen scissors (she wouldn’t use Winona’s good ones, wouldn’t do that to her) cuts it short short short like she likes it, and she wears shitty t-shirts old enough to be considered precious artifacts if they weren’t so goddamn ratty. They say things like ‘Beastie Boys’ and ‘Talking Heads' and she even has one that says ‘Nine Inch Nails’. Old bands, from the 20th century or so, that are loud or angry enough to suit her just right, but old enough to be free online.
She gets dressed, grabs her backpack and her school PADD, running out the door and letting it slam behind her. She could technically be driving to school (she’s old enough by now - technically she won’t be able to get her real license until she’s seventeen, but sixteen is old enough for a permit, which could get her to and from school no problem) but Frank told her to fuck off after she kinda sorta drove his precious sports care off a cliff.
She doesn’t even regret it, not really, not even as she finds herself walking alongside the dusty Riverside highway.
It was damn fun to drive that car off a cliff. Fuck Frank.
-
Jane Kirk is sixteen, a sophomore at the Riverside public high school, and she’s never left Iowa.
And God, she’s pretty.
“‘M Jane,” she says. Trying to make conversation. “You waiting for the bus?”
The Vulcan’s eyes are intelligent, scanning her up and down, noting her backpack and the PADD in her hand, but no response comes. Jane realizes, for the first time, that she might not understand Standard. Which would be a bit odd - most people understand Standard, especially if they plan on visiting some middle-of-nowhere Terran dump like Riverside. But Jane’s never met a Vulcan, doesn’t know much about them. Their culture, their customs. It’s quite possible this girl never learned Standard at all, has never heard it before now (however unlikely that may be).
So Jane tries again.
“You going on the bus?” She asks, again, pointing to the little scrap of metal that’s a lousy excuse for a sign, the only indicator of there being a bus stop here.
The Vulcan girl looks at her. Barely nods - though the nod is there, that small sign of understanding, and Jane’s grateful for that.
“Neat,” says Jane. “I’m, uh, catching a ride to school.”
The girl says something in response, but it comes out awkward and quiet. Jane can’t tell what language it was meant to be, though she has some hunch it was an attempt at Standard. She’s really wishing she’d stolen some translator tech from school, now. She’d thought about it, before, but never had much use for it.
“I’m Jane,” Jane says, again, trying to salvage whatever it is that currently feels like it’s crashing straight into the ground right now. “Dunno if you caught that, before.”
She seems to understand what Jane’s saying, now, at least enough to know the name.
“I am Spock,” she says, Standard broken and heavily accented, pointing to herself.
“Nice to meet you Spock,” Jane says, for some reason unable to stop herself from grinning. “Welcome to hell.”
-
Spock seems to be around her age, though can’t say for sure - Jane has a hard time understanding specifics through the language barrier problem, and she’s never met a Vulcan before. She doesn’t know how the whole aging thing works with them.
Spock’s tall and wiry and absolutely stunning. She wears too-big sweaters, probably hand-knit by a parent, and bright purplish-blue eye makeup that Jane’s pretty sure doesn’t really fit the Vulcan norm. She seems clever, incredibly clever, which would make sense; Jane’s heard that Vulcans are insanely smart, eidetic memory or something like that. She’s sure it’s true; she can see it in Spock’s eyes. She’s intelligent.
Of course Jane wants to know everything about her.
But Spock doesn’t seem to speak much Standard, and Jane doesn’t know any Vulcan.
She doesn’t understand a word she says.
-
The bus arrives, they get on it, and when Jane sits down, Spock takes the seat beside her, back completely straight, hands folded neatly in her lap. Jane takes it as a good sign, and spends the bus ride to school rambling on and on about new research that’s come out in transporter tech, how they haven’t quite figured out the way to transport people long distances yet but they’re getting better, how she thinks she might know where they’re going wrong and how to fix it, and she tells Spock, and Spock listens, and no one’s listened to Jane in a long, long time.
They get off the bus and they go to school and it turns out that Spock’s in all the advanced classes, which is great, because Jane’s in the advanced classes, too. She wonders what the fuck Spock’s doing here, how she can manage in school when she barely knows the language, why anyone would even want to come to Riverside in the first place. But she doesn’t ask, because she’s not sure how well Spock would understand, anyway, and then it’s evening and Jane’s taking the bus home and she’s on her bed and on her PADD and stealing textbooks off the Internet. It’s not that hard, really; most of the time she doesn’t even have to hack the stuff herself. Someone else has done it for her, a similarly desperate student with no cash and no way to keep up in class without a textbook. Finding one that’ll assist her in this specific area of study proves a bit harder, but eventually she finds a website (passcode protected, membership required) and she gets past all that shit with ease, and she downloads what she’s looking for.
Jane Kirk is sixteen, and she’s smart, damn smart, and she considers herself pretty good with languages. But Vulcan is fucking hard. And for her, it shouldn’t be. She conquered most of Earth’s predominant languages within the span of a year, and she picked up SSL (Standard Sign Language) within a week. She can do Orion (quite a few dialects), Tellaran, even a bit of Klingon (which means she can introduce herself and say dick and fuck off and other such choice phrases). But Vulcan?
Vulcan’s a bitch.
(She means this in the nicest way, of course.)
She picks up her PADD, new textbook just downloaded, and she finds it almost impossible to get through. She can’t even really explain why. Maybe it’s just the general syntax that’s fucking her up. That’s happened before. Could be that the language is just nearly impossible for Human vocal chords to manage, in which case this would all be yet another lost cause. But she digs a bit deeper and finds out that, though broken, she might be able to get out something understandable.
She skips all lessons on written Vulcan; she won’t need that. She’s looking for the more practical uses. Conversational type stuff. She looks into phonetics, watching videos of spoken Vulcan.
She’s up until maybe 3AM, and she realizes she ought to get at least a bit of sleep before the sun rises again. She didn’t even realize the time until she looked to the top of her PADD. She’s never been good at noticing time passing when she’s caught up in something like this. But once she realizes she only has four hours at most to get some sleep in, she turns of her light and tucks her PADD away.
Jane’s sixteen. She’s tired, but she can’t seem to fall asleep. She thinks she’s in love with Spock. She realizes, for the first time, that she has no idea what love is.
-
They see each other all the time, thanks to school. It’s great. Before Spock, Jane really had no one. If they were down a person in Chem, she’d go without a lab partner. She worked by herself on History presentations, never went to study groups. Arguably never needed study groups, based on some of her recent test scores, but still, the socialization would have been nice. When she really wanted company, she stopped by the local bar. She was technically a minor, yeah, but the town was small and no one cared. It was unhealthy and far from safe, she knows that, but it was where she could go.
But now, she’s got Spock, and she doesn’t really do any of that anymore.
They stick to each other, through the school day, then before and after it. Hanging out under trees or in the wide open spaces between farms that no one really goes anymore. They’re walking through one of the empty fields right now, and Jane has her eyes on a gnarled old tree to climb. Spock doesn’t climb trees, so Jane’ll probably have to go on by herself, but she knows that Spock will be happy to stand and watch, talk maybe. It’s been a few weeks, now; they’ve both been getting better at communicating.
Jane points at the tree in the distance, question in her eyes.
Spock nods, and they begin to walk towards it. As soon as they reach the base of the tree Jane’s climbing, one branch, then another, up and up, glancing down every once and awhile to check that Spock’s still there.
Jane notices that Spock’s wearing one of those sweaters again. Spock’s always wearing sweaters.
“Ko-mekh?” Asks Jane, pointing at the sweater. Mother? She’s been meaning to ask about it, and hopes Spock’s able to understand; Jane’s Vulcan isn’t perfect, but she just finished up the chapter on family and interpersonal relations last night, and she’s feeling pretty good in that area.
Spock nods. “Gift,” she says, in Standard. “Hanukkah.”
“Oh! You’re Jewish!” Jane smiles. “Me too. My family's not really practicing though...” ...because my dad died and my mom's never home, she thinks, but doesn't say it out loud. She reaches for another branch just above her, only to find it the slightest bit out of reach. With a grunt, she jumps, grabbing at it with both hands and swinging herself around until she’s successfully made it up another level. Jane’s grinning, looking down at Spock who’s looking a bit smaller now. “Taller than you,” she says.
The Vulcan’s raising her eyebrow again. “Riyeht.” Incorrect.
“Not when I’m in a tree.”
Spock sighs, says something in Vulcan that probably translates to ‘Silly Human.’ Jane makes a mental note to look that up when she gets back to her house tonight. Figures it’ll be useful to know.
-
Jane’s sixteen, and tall enough for her age, and strong from working in the fields every summer. Strong enough to hold her own against Frank, even if she can’t really fight back.  It’s fine, thought; Frank doesn’t hit her so much, anymore. She doesn’t know why. Might have something to do with Tarsus, or something to do with her getting older. She tries not to think about it. She still keeps her door locked at night.
When she sneaks back into the house this evening, she finds him passed out on the couch. He smells like shit - she plugs her nose as she walks past him, resigning herself to a shower as soon as she gets upstairs, just to get rid of the lingering stench. Done with the shower, she collapses onto her bed wearing the first clean clothes she can find (which in this case is a pair of jeans and a tank top), weary, eyes closed as she fishes around blindly for her PADD. As soon as she finds it, she opens her eyes, and flips through one of the Standard-Vulcan dictionaries she’s been using for reference.
If she’s reading it right, ‘Silly Human’ would be Duh-komihn. She flips a few more pages, but she can’t find a term for ‘Silly Vulcan’. She wants to call Spock now, but Frank could hear; the walls are thinner than they seem. She doesn't want to risk that. She’ll have to bring it up with Spock later. They're doing some project or another together in Chem, and they're meeting up for it tomorrow. She'll ask her about it then.
-
They’re getting better at communicating with each other.
It's useful for a variety of reasons - for one, Jane can understand Vulcan, and she knows for a fact that Spock isn't making fun of her all the time, which is a bit of a relief. And now Spock knows how much Jane swears, which is probably for the better, because hey, that's important shit to know. Jane asks her what the Vulcan word is for 'Silly Vulcan' after explaining her 'Silly Human' research. Spock tells her that they don't say 'Silly Vulcan' because Vulcans are incapable of being silly (or at least, that's what Jane thinks Spock tells her - she's still not the best at Vulcan, after all). Jane says that she doesn't think that's true, and Spock struggles to maintain her cold Vulcan facade, so so tempted to stick her tongue out at the duh-komihn.
"Vulcans do not lie," Spock mutters.
Jane keeps a list of the new things she’s learned about Spock. Right now, it looks something like this:
Good at chess.
Jewish
Human mother?
(Maybe) exchange student
Could theoretically climb trees but won’t because of ‘Surak’s Teachings’ or something like that.
Meditates
Enjoys ‘Narat do-toh’? NOTE: Vulcan game, like hide-and-seek
Can't lie - but that's obviously a lie. Yeah.
“What you writing?” Spock asks, after catching Jane adding something to the ever-growing list in her school notebook.
“Nirsh apc’koik du,” she says. No business you. She cringes at herself; she definitely butchered that. She was trying to say something along the lines of Not your business but she’s pretty sure she just completely screwed up.
Spock grabs the notebook, eyes skimming the page with superhuman speed. She raises an eyebrow, passing it back to Jane.
“List?”
“Oh quiet you.”
The corner of the Vulcan's mouth twitches in that way that's basically her version of a smirk. "A me list."
-
Jane's sixteen. She's smart, smarter than most sixteen-year-olds are, though she couldn't explain why. She likes coding (specifically hacking, though she's been told by multiple people that that's not technically legal) and learning languages and even the rare History lesson here or there. But she absolutely despises studying.
“Spock,” Jane whines, throwing herself across the desk. “When’re we gonna go?”
They’ve been cooped up in one of the far corners of the school’s (very, very, small) library for hours now. She’s honestly amazed it hasn’t closed on them yet, especially taking into account the annoyed looks the librarian won't stop shooting them. After her latest stink-eye, Jane thinks that they’re a minutes away from being forcefully booted. Not that it’ll deter Spock; whatever it is she’s currently researching, the Vulcan seems keen to continue until midnight if she must.
“Come on, look at me.” Jane tapped Spock’s shoulder.
Spock’s head snaps up, eyes locking on hers. Vulcans aren’t meant to show emotion, Jane’s heard, but the frustration in Spock’s eyes is clear.
“Listen. The librarian’s gonna kick us out any second now.” Jane’s gaze strays back to the angry woman at the front of the library, and she suddenly remembers every sin she’s committed in its vicinity (pre-Tarsus, of course, but still) and she gets a bit more anxious. “We really should go soon. Soon as in now. And don’t play dumb or anything because I know you’re smart and can read body language and understand at least a tenth of what I’m saying because we’re good at understanding each other.”
Spock runs a hand through her uncharacteristically mussed black hair.
“Ashal-veh…” she sighs, obviously tired. Spock mutters some other words in Vulcan, too, with the odd Standard phrase thrown in (she’s picked up a few of those - full immersion will do that to you). Jane opts not to listen; sleep-deprived ramblings tend not to be the most coherent, and it’s not really worth her trouble, anyway, since she barely speaks the language.
Jane raises an eyebrow. She’s been practicing, working on it in front of a mirror, trying to do it the way Spock can. She knows she’s not nearly as good as Spock, yet, but she’s sure that once she finally gets it down it’ll be hilarious. “You must be more exhausted than I thought. You don’t normally slip into Vulcan when we’re at school.” Jane paused. “Didja get enough sleep last night?”
Spock gives her that look of Stop questioning me or I will kill you.
“So that’s a no.”
Spock mutters something else, but Jane doesn’t catch it.
“Y’know, I’m pretty sure killing people is against Surak’s teachings,” Jane says, hands falling to the pockets of her jeans.
At this, Spock lifts the corner of her mouth ever-so-slightly - the closest Vulcans seemed to get to a smile.
“Now come on, you,” Jane says, tugging at the sleeve of Spock’s sweater. “School’s over. Come on now. Out of the library, we’re getting you home.”
“But-” Spock says, switching back to her accented Standard.
“I.” Says Jane, Vulcan sharp in her mouth as the librarian glares at them once again. Now.
-
Jane's house is empty today. Frank's gone out somewhere, work, she thinks, not investigating further. So she brings Spock over, because she can, because she wants to.
Jane's sixteen. She's bored. She's in love with her best friend, and and she wants to invite her over.
They go in through the back door, the one with the tattered old screen over it to keep bugs away. It squeaks when it opens, but they never oil the hinges. Jane doesn't have the time and Frank doesn't give a shit, and Winona's never home to hear it, so they leave it be. Jane walks into the kitchen, tile cool beneath her feet (a relief after the outside heat) and Spock follows her silently. Spock's very quiet in the way she moves - almost cat-like, though Jane's never really spent time with cats before. She thinks this is what they're like. She thinks it's a bit funny.
They hurry up the stairs to Jane's room, not wanting to spend time in the rest of the house. Even when Frank's not home something about being in any of the main rooms just feels a bit off. Jane's room is better; cleaner (though the bar for that is so low, it may as well be on the ground) and it smells a bit nicer than the rest of the house, especially when she opens the window, and she has a little old-fashioned radio that she turns on when they walk in the room. She gets a few stations in, up here, mostly the local ones that play mediocre music and report on news and sports and things. She turns the dial until she finds a station that doesn't sound like it's being eaten by static. There's a song playing on the radio, quiet and sweet, the lyrics about love or something like that. Jane's not listening to it too much.
“You ever been dancing, Spock?”
She raises an eyebrow, mutters something in Vulcan, feigns annoyance. But Jane knows her well enough, now, and she knows that Spock's just avoiding the question.
"Okay," Jane says, thinking. "Well, would you like to dance with me?"
Spock considers this for a moment, the same way she thinks through difficult test questions, or how she acts after she's just learned another odd Terran phrase. After a moment's thought, she nods. Jane reaches out to grab her shoulders, and Spock puts her hands on Jane's waste. They don't hold hands; Jane doesn't really know why, yet, but she knows it's not something Spock's too keen on. And then they're dancing, just a little, slowly and a bit awkwardly, the music coming from the radio washing over them, floating out the open window on a breeze.
“Ashel-veh?” Jane whispers, knowing that Spock can hear her.
“You looked up the meaning?” Spock asks. Her Standard’s gotten better, just like Jane’s Vulcan isn’t so bad anymore.
“It was a bit harder to find, I’ll give you that.” Jane’s voice holds amusement, soft and warm and happy. “Not in my textbook, or anything. But eventually I found it in a dictionary.”
“Hm.”
“You called me darling,” Jane says.
“Yes. And you just returned the favor.”
“Yes.”
They're quiet. They listen to the music, soft and sweet in the background. The air is warm and muggy around them. Jane's holding on to Spock, resting her head on her shoulder, and she never ever ever wants to let go.
-
The grass is soft beneath them, if a bit damp, and the field is wide and open and empty and the sky feels vast and endless. Technically, it is. But it's not something you notice too often, with the tall structures constantly on the horizon and people crowding up every space known to man. Right now, it's just them. They're laying down in the middle of the field. They're young and naive and untouchable. They're looking at the stars.
"Do you have constellations on Vulcan?" Jane asks.
Spock says something about how drawing pictures based on lights in the sky is illogical, even if one does not know that they are simply burning balls of gas in space. Jane laughs, and immediately starts to show Spock all of the constellations she knows, spinning the stories that go with them. Ursa Major and Minor, Leo, The Seven Sisters, Orion...
"Illogical," Spock says once more. It's becoming her favorite word in Standard.
(Jane's favorite Vulcan phrase is 'bath-paik' meaning 'damn you'. She thinks it's funny.)
The stars are bright and stunning out here, where the light pollution can’t touch them. Jane finds herself reaching for Spock’s hand. She’s surprised when Spock offers two fingers to her - her index and middle - and Jane mimics the movement, unsure of what it means, and they’re touching their fingers together.
“I’m gonna be a Captain someday,” she says, quietly. "Like my dad."
It’s the first time she’s ever said it out loud, and it sounds like a promise she’ll forget to keep. But Spock’s here with her, holding her hand, and she feels calm. Calm in a way she can’t quite explain.
Jane’s sixteen, Spock maybe a bit older, though not much. They spend the night watching the sky as stars and starships dance in the darkness. Jane sneaks back into her house later that evening, after she and Spock both realized they had to go home. She falls asleep quickly, feeling content. For the first time in a long time, she looks forward to waking up.

California Highway 1 Road Trip
Six weeks ago, Highway 1 fully reopened in Big Sur, following devastating mudslides in May 2017. After $54 million worth of repairs and the removal of millions of tons of earth, rocks, and debris, travelers can once again enjoy an uninterrupted drive along the gorgeous coastal highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
But it’s not just the views that make the trek one of the most famous road trips in the world. There’s also the food to contend with: Dotted along the winding route, you’ll find peppery smoked-fish tacos, juicy burgers smothered in eggs and melted cheese, and homemade doughnuts oozing with jelly.
Our version of this journey begins in Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco. There, you’ll want to stock up on triple cream Mt Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and scarf as many straight-from-the-bay oysters as you can get down. Your eating adventure will continue from there—you’d better start hungry.
  Point Reyes
Side Street Kitchen
The specialty at this year-old, bright, modern diner is the crispy skinned rotisserie chicken, fragrant with herbs and served half or whole with an array of sauces, including curried yogurt, salsa verde, and chimichurri rojo. The other specialty: puffy, sugar-coated, fruit-filled apple fritters. 60 4th St., Point Reyes Station
The Boat Oyster Bar
Hog Island Oyster Co. is famed for the oysters it pulls out of the bay and supplies to top dining rooms around the country. A reservation-only café on the water features those world-class bivalves; the menu changes often, but it frequently includes Hog Island’s singular kumamotos. You can get a dozen raw for $36; even better are the barbecued ones, grilled and dripping with chipotle bourbon garlic butter. 20215 Shoreline Highway, Marshall
Half Moon Bay Area
  La Costanera
Peruvian food is having a moment in the U.S., and La Costanera, with its wall of windows overlooking the water from a second-floor dining room, has been recognized by Michelin’s Bib Gourmand. The menu has a mix of classics such as antichuchos (grilled skewers) with marinated beef heart and pork belly; empanadas; tender beer-braised lamb shank; and lomo saltado (beef tenderloin with onions, soy sauce, and a fried egg, if you want one). 8150 Cabrillo Highway, Montara
Dad’s Luncheonette
Chef Scott Clark used to cook at San Francisco’s Michelin-three-starred Saison. He’s transformed a red-painted train caboose into a cozy, wood-lined diner with a small menu of comfort food favorites. The $12 hamburger sandwich has melted cheese, a soft egg, and red onion pickles on grilled white bread; the mushroom version substitutes maitakes for the grass-fed beef. 225 Cabrillo Highway South, Half Moon Bay
Sam’s Chowder House
Seafood makes up almost the entire menu at Sam’s, including a “Captains Platter” of oysters, clams, shrimp, poke, and ceviche; an appetizer of grilled sardines; steamed clams (with the option of linguine); and lobster rolls, “naked” with butter or “dressed” with aioli. At night, the place highlights fresh catches such as Pacific swordfish and local halibut. The seats on the deck offer a panoramic ocean view. 4210 Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay
Hop Dogma Brewing Co.
The rotating array of craft brews at this locally popular beer hall might include Pyro’s Prost chili beer (pilsner brewed with jalapeño); Every Third Inquiry, a Bourbon barrel-aged stout; and the flagship Alpha Dank IPA. Guests can order food from nearby Lamas, a Peruvian and Mexican restaurant, and the tacos, burritos, and arroz con pollo will be delivered to the taproom. 270 Capistrano Rd., Half Moon Bay
Duarte’s Tavern
Dating back to 1894, when Frank Duarte bought the place for $12 in gold, this venerable restaurant specializes in a California version of Continental cuisine. The menu runs the gamut from shrimp cocktail to pork chops with fresh applesauce. The specialties are anything with artichokes, plus the cioppino, packed with clams, shrimp, cod and especially crab, which people drive down from San Francisco to eat. 202 Stage Rd.
Santa Cruz
The Picnic Basket
Set on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the picturesque luncheonette has an all-day menu with a powerful breakfast selection: golden-brown turnovers stuffed with seasonal fruit or Niman Ranch ham and cheese; an egg-potato-greens frittata sandwich on toast; and house-made jelly doughnuts. Later in the day, hot dogs and elbow macaroni and cheese turn up on the menu. The nearby Penny Ice Creamery, where everything is house-made under the same ownership, is equally popular. 125 Beach St.
Monterey Peninsula
The Meatery
A serious, whole-animal butcher shop with impressive cuts of meat on display, this white-tiled space also serves as a deli. Sandwiches range from a hefty Reuben to banh mi made with caramelized pork belly slices, pickled vegetables, a hit of cilantro, and kewpie mayo on a French roll. A highlight is the house corned beef with sauerkraut on rye. The hot food offerings change daily: On Sundays and Mondays, there’s buttermilk-fried chicken; on Thursdays, visitors line up for the baby back ribs. 1534 Fremont Blvd., Seaside
The Bench Restaurant
Set on the impossibly scenic Pebble Beach Golf Links 18th hole, the Bench has a crowd-pleasing menu that offers all kinds of pizza-styled flatbreads: with pepperoni; with ratatouille, fennel ricotta and heirloom tomatoes; and with bench bacon and grilled, pickled red onion. The 24-ounce short rib, the Smokey Joe, is smoked for 10 hours. Aside from the best views, the outdoor deck has fire-pit tables. 1700 17 Mile Dr., Pebble Beach
Aubergine at l’Auberge Carmel
Chef Justin Cogley operates one of the country’s best under-the-radar fine-dining restaurants. Set in a Relais & Châteaux property, the intimate dining room has a $175 tasting menu that combines local ingredients in unexpected ways: A Morro Bay oyster with caviar has a hit of sea water, and seared abalone is accompanied by romaine lettuce that’s been braised and sliced in thick rounds, with lobster-infused lettuce puree. Monte Verde at 7th Ave., Carmel
Big Sur
Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant
Amid the trees in the hills off the highway, this exceptional café produces terrific pizzas from the wood oven, with a charred, bready, chewy crust and such toppings as creamy greens, mushrooms and tangy taleggio, and red sauce meatballs. The place is first and foremost a bakery: The creamy lemon curd pie in a pistachio crust is addictive, as is any pastry in the display case. 47540 Highway 1
Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn
Post Ranch Inn, renowned for its modernist, cliffside, treehouse rooms overlooking the ocean, has a new manager, Gary Obligacion, formerly of Chicago’s celebrated Alinea. The property’s Sierra Mar restaurant is home to one country’s largest wine collections, with 14,000-plus bottles. It complements an elegant four-course tasting menu from which the seared foie gras has a garnish of hazelnuts and king salmon is paired with smoked split peas and sweet apple. 47900 Highway 1
The Sur House at Ventana Big Sur
In 2017, Ventana went through a multimillion-dollar renovation. The renovated Sur House restaurant now has outdoor fireside seating and a bar menu with smoky spice-rubbed chicken wings and open-faced tuna melt accented with pickled fennel. The dinner menu has deceptively simple dishes, such as grilled pork loin on a bed of jalapeño-spiked grits. The wine cellar is also notable: some 10,000 bottles with a focus on the Central Coast. 48123 Highway 1
San Luis Obispo
Ruddell’s Smokehouse
There’s not much barbecue along Highway 1. The notable exception is Ruddell’s, where founder Jim Ruddell set up shop in 2001 in a small building with a few tables outside. The place smokes albacore and salmon with a brown sugar and kosher salt rub; chicken is slow-cooked over hickory. The smoked seafood and poultry are available as tacos in a big French-roll sandwich or salad—and by the pound. 101 D St., Cayucas
Cracked Crab
In the surfing town of Pismo Beach, the unpretentious Cracked Crab has a blazing neon sign and lines stretching out the door. The menu changes according to availability of seafood and features an ocean’s worth of crab: dungeness cocktail with lime and avocado; puck-size, pan-seared lump blue crab cakes; and New England-style lobster rolls stuffed with crab instead. The seafood buckets offer the opportunity to mix and match wild Gulf shrimp, Alaskan crab, clams, mussels, and lobster tails; they go for $61 for one person and $79 for two and come with all the mallets and scissors you’ll need to extract the shellfish. 751 Price St., Pismo Beach
Santa Barbara
Jalama Beach Store & Grill
In Lompoc, the epicenter of Santa Barbara winemaking, is this grill, set inside a store that’s set inside the county park. The specialty is the Jalama burger: It’s quintessential Cali-style, with shredded lettuce, tomato, onions, special sauce, and a griddled bun. The burger has gotten so popular over its almost 40-year history that the name is trademarked. 9991 Jalama Rd., Lompoc
La Super-Rica Tacqueria
Famous for being name-checked by Julia Child, Super-Rica is a cheerful, white-and-turquoise stand with a large selection of options that feature stellar homemade tortillas. The tacos are filled with all kinds of grilled meats—chunks of spiced, brick-colored chorizo; adobado with tender strips of marinated pork. The Super-Rica Especial is made up cheese-stuffed green pasilla chiles that are roasted and draped over tortillas with marinated pork and more cheese, for $6. 622 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.
At the end of a dock on the harbor, this photogenic counter started out selling local seafood almost 30 years ago. Customers can still buy fish from commercial fishermen here. (There’s also a robust online store with trays of uni and stone crab claws.) The chopped caesar comes with a choice of grilled, skewered shrimp or sweet scallops. There’s more local shrimp, coated with coconut and crispy fried, garnished with onion rings. Also highly recommended are the linguine studded with garlic-sauteed clams in the shell and the monumental, steamed two-pound crab, along with a selection of local wine and beer by the pitcher. 230 Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara
The Los Angeles Area
Malibu Farm
What started as a pop-up dining room by Helene Henderson in 2013 is now a farmers market-driven restaurant and café on the Malibu Pier, with outposts in Miami and Hawaii. The all-day café at the end of the dock has a lightbulb-lit menu that boasts a pile-up of Swedish pancakes with whipped cream and whatever the seasonal berries are, as well as kale caesar and BLTs with lemon aioli brushed on whole wheat. Down the pier, a slightly more serious version of the restaurant offers a tofu, spinach, and tomato scramble on weekend mornings, and nachos, featuring blue corn chips laden with black beans, melty cheese, and drizzles of sour cream in the evenings. 23000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu
Tallula’s
Chef Jeremy Fox, who heads up the nearby vegetable-focused Rustic Canyon, now puts a creative spin on the Mexi-Cali dining room. In a colorful space decorated with hanging plants, Fox uses exceptional local corn, served Mexican-style with smoky chipotle aioli, and accents black-cod tacos with malt tartar sauce in tender, house-made tortillas. A daily taco special is dreamed up by rotating cooks in the kitchen. The serious bar program features mezcal Manhattans on draft, as well as the obligatory margaritas. 118 Entrada Dr., Santa Monica
Father’s Office
Chef Sang Yoon began serving one of the—if not the—country’s first gourmet burgers almost 20 years ago. The Office Burger is made from freshly ground, dry-aged beef, so it’s got a deep, meaty flavor that’s further accentuated by sweet caramelized onions, bacon, gruyere, and blue cheese. Accompanying fries, standard or sweet potato, are presented in a mini-shopping cart. Father’s Office is equally known for pouring dozens of local craft beers. 1018 Montana Ave., Santa Monica

PODEVENT: THE HOLY PROPHET ADAM, PEACE BE UPON HIM – PART 2 OF 2
Tumblr media
As discussed in detail in the previous blog, envy was the first sin ever committed. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 34:
“And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.”
This is when the Devil envied the status of the Holy Prophet Adam, peace be upon him. All muslims should avoid envy at all costs as is it destroys one's good deeds just like fire destroys wood. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sunan Ibn Majah, number 4210. This is quite evident as the Devil's many centuries of worship and righteous deeds were destroyed because of this envy which led to pride. The reason envy is such a serious and major sin is because when one is envious of another their problem in reality is not with the person it is actually with Allah, the Exalted, as He is the One who granted the blessing which is envied. So a person’s envy only demonstrates their displeasure with the allocation and choice of Allah, the Exalted. They behave as if they know better than Allah, the Exalted.
The Devil refused to prostrate as he believed he was superior to the Holy Prophet Adam, peace be upon him. It is important to note, that the Devil did not reject the Lordship of Allah, the Exalted, instead he rejected the command of Allah, the Exalted. He used his own subjective thinking instead of submitting to the order of Allah, the Exalted. This caused him to become a sinner and a disbeliever. This is a clear message to all of mankind that a true servant of Allah, the Exalted, does not apply their own thinking in matters of faith. But the duty of a servant is to simply fulfil the commands of their Master. This is true servanthood. Those who question the commands of the Master only do so as they believe they themselves are masters. But this is not true as there is no master except Allah, the Exalted. A muslim should not question the wisdom behind the commands of Islam as this is the path of the Devil. Instead, they should submit humbly to them and follow the path of the cherished and blessed Angels. Chapter 66 At Tahrim, verse 66:
“…over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.
Muslims know that this great event led to the Devil tempting the Holy Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, which caused his descent to Earth so that he could fulfil his purpose of creation namely, the Caliph of Allah, the Exalted, on Earth. Chapter 2 Al Baqarah, verse 30:
“…Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority…””
The Holy Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, had his lapse forgiven as he demonstrated humility and turned to Allah, the Exalted, without losing hope in His infinite mercy. The Devil was left wondering in misguidance as he did not acknowledge his sin nor ask for forgiveness as he lost hope in the mercy of Allah, the Exalted. It is important for muslims to adhere to the traits of their forefather the Holy Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, as they are bound to commit sins. One should never give up hope, sincerely repent and strive in the obedience of Allah, the Exalted, at all times by fulfilling His commands, refraining from His prohibitions and by facing destiny with patience. Chapter 41 Fussilat, verse 6:
“…so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness…”

Were you an unlovely child? >> I was an unloved child. I think I was probably very lovely, in ways that went totally unappreciated. 4204. In the recent Michael Jackson documentary was he treated fairly? >> --- 4205. New York City and other places along the East Coast have recently been said to be the next terrorist targets. What do you think about this? >> How old is this survey again? *checks* Ah, 2006...
4206. What should the last question in this survey be? >> I don’t care. 4207. Are you more likely to think so deeply about things that you forget to take out the garbage OR be wrapped up in your life andforget to think deeply about things? >> I don’t really have any practical problems living both in my head (so to speak...) and in the world. I’ve been doing it since childhood, after all. 4208. In what ways are you destructive? >> Mostly self-destructive, if anything. 4209. If you're not with the one you love can you love the one you're with? >> --- 4210. Best three REM songs: >> I only know three, lol. Or, four...? Not sure. Hmm. 4218. Name something you do that might be considered eccentric: >> --- 4219. Are you hard or easy to love? >> I don’t know if I’m hard or easy to love. I’m inclined to think it must be incredibly difficult, considering how infrequently it happens... 4220. Could you be the next american idol? >> No. 4221. If you were going on american idol what would you: wear? sing? >> I would rather die. 4222. Is Simon Cowell sexy or does he suck? >> I don’t think anything about him is interesting or attractive. 4223. What was the last thing you used a credit card for? >> I used a debit card at the farmer’s market ATM. 4224. Do you like back or foot massages more? >> --- 4225. Is anything brainwashing people? How/in what ways? >> I mean, sure? Like, brainwashing does happen?  4234. If you were a sex psitols song which one would you be (some choices in case you aren't familiar with them: Holiday in the Sun, Bodies, No Feelings, Liar, Problems, Seventeen, Pretty Vacant, New York, E.M.I.)? >> --- 4235. Are you more likely to drink moderately and often or drink within an inch of your life but only once in a while? >> Moderately and often. 4236. What scares you most about war? >> Oh, just, you know. All the violent death. 4237. You find a man with wings (an angel?) half dead in your back yard. the first thing you do is: >> Stare, I guess. I don’t really know how I would react to that. 4238. Why do people go to faith healers when there is so much proof that they are fake? >> Because they believe or they desperately want to believe. I mean, that’s what I assume. I don’t know why else you would go if you didn’t believe in it at least a little. 4239. When someone you care about is really angry with you how do you feel and how do you deal with that feeling? >> I feel like not being in their presence, to be quite honest. Other people’s anger can be triggering, especially certain ways it’s expressed. I don’t think they should suppress their feelings at all, I just don’t see why I’d necessarily need to be in the room for it. 4240. There's a guy who sometimes get violent with his wife. He will scream 'I LOVE you!' While he hurts her. Do you think there could be any love there? >> This does not at all match up with my understanding of love, and in fact is very unloving behaviour by my reckoning, so I don’t particularly care whether he thinks he’s acting out of love. 4241. Name at least three things that make you want to cry. >> I don’t feel like racking my brain for this one. 4242. Is John Malkovitch sexy? Is Billy Corgan? Is Michael Stipe? Is Moby? Is Sinead O'Connor? >> I’m the wrong person to ask. 4243. Imagine there's a leper and he wants to be cured but instead of going away his sores sprout sunflowers? Would that be a miracle? Would that tell you anything about anything? >> That would be a marvel (and more than a little frightening), for sure, but... like, I don’t see what that would tell me about anything. 4244. Do you watch people? >> I mean, sometimes? Like if I’m sitting on a park bench and people walk by, I might observe them in their passing. 4245. Do you have anything that doesn't belong to you? >> No. Well, Sparrow’s Mewtwo plush is in here, but it’s not like I stole it or anything, lol. I’ll toss it back into her room at some point. 4246. what is normal? >> *shrug* 4247. You are given your own private island. What would you name it, and who is allowed to live there with you? >> No. 4248. How can you prevent war? How can we all prevent it? >> I don’t know. 4249. If something is wrong in society and you don't like it but you do nothing about it, in a way aren't you supporting it? >> I don’t really buy this cut-and-dried way of looking at it. There are a lot of things I can do nothing about except complain. 4250. Do you like Leslie Nielson? >> He was funny in Airplane... but like, Airplane was just hilarious in general. I don’t remember anything else he was in.

[Space!AU] [Fantasy] Frank was particularly proud of the bar that his parents had left him as inheritance (the fact that they won it playing cards wasn't important, it was his anyway), and even if Frank wasn't completely human, he was more than happy to manage the bar as a real Earthling would have. But then something changed when Frank found himself staring at a cracked glass; for some reason, he began to think that maybe his life was becoming too monotonous, flat, senseless - and with a whole Universe to discover, just listen to his clients telling stories was not enough anymore: he wanted to live his own story, this time. And the young barman, indeed, would've soon found himself stuck in a war way biger than him, where Gerard Nox way, captain of a space-ship, was fighting for something more than just his own life. __ Frank had always seen the stars as unattainable, distant lights: being nobody's property - or at least, somebody else's property - he would've never thought that one day he woulv have been able to reach and almost touch them. Although he would've never even thought that he would've fallen in love with someone so dangerous the way he did in the end...

Assessment of the Physicochemical and Microbiological Quality of Sachet Water Sold in Kumbotso LGA, Kano State, Nigeria-Juniper Publishers
Tumblr media
The rise in number of sachet water producers in Kano state calls for continuous and vigorous surveillance of the quality of water consumed by the populace to ensure compliance with the WHO and NAFDAC standards for such products. This study assessed the quality of sixteen brands of sachet water sold in Kumbotso LGA of Kano State, Nigeria. Physical assay, physico-chemical, heavy metal contents and microbiological quality assessments of the water samples were carried out. Not all the water samples examined contained any information on their manufacturing and/or expiry dates. The pH, temperature,  conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS) of all the sachet water brands conformed to the WHO standards. All the five heavy metals (arsenic, lead, iron, copper and zinc) analyzed are observed to be within the safety limits recommended by WHO, however Coliforms and some other pathogenic bacteria were detected in 31% of the sachet water brands; leading to the conclusion that 69% of the sachet water sold in Kumbotso LGA of Kano State is safe for human consumption.
Keywords: Kumbotso; Quality; Sachet water; Arsenic; Lead
Introduction
Water is a liquid that is essential to life and makes up a large part of the body. Bateman and Sargeant, (2006) and [1] reported that the human body is made up of more than 65% of water. Man’s continued existence and human physiology depends on the availability of good quality drinking water [2,3]. A large number of the world’s population lacks access to safe drinking water. Of the more than six billion people on earth, more than one billion (one in six) lack access to safe drinking water [1], especially in developing countries such as Nigeria. The adequate supply of clean, fresh and safe drinking water is of great importance to all human beings. Water consumers are frequently unaware of the potential health risks associated with exposure to water borne contaminants, which have often led to diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, Legionnaire’s disease and parasitic diseases [4]. Water quality can be determined using a variety of physico-chemical and microbiological processes. Good quality water should be odourless, colourless or transparent, tasteless, and free from faecal pollution [5]. It appears colorless in small quantities although in larger bodies there is an inherent blue hue [6].
Sachet water, popularly known as ‘pure water’ in Nigeria, is any commercially treated water, manufactured, packaged and distributed for sale in sealed food grade containers and is intended for human consumption [7]. Sachet water was introduced into the Nigerian markets as a less expensive means of accessing good quality drinking water than bottled water [3,8]. However, several studies have shown that packaged water can be contaminated with bacteria at various stages of production [9-11] and during handling. It can also be contaminated with toxic substances depending on the original source of the water. The use of chemical disinfectants in water treatment or construction materials used in water supply system usually results in the formation of the chemical by-products, some of which are potentially hazardous [12,13]. Drinking water can serve as a vehicle for disease transmission, it has indeed, been implicated in many foodborne illnesses [14-16]. [1], reported pH values below the WHO maximum permissible limits of 6.5 in some sachet water samples, this affects disinfection efficiency and may have an indirect effect on human health. Due to the perceived monetary benefits or gains in the production of sachet water, a large number of people have engaged in the business of its production, this can lead to introduction of substandard and fake or misbranded products into the market [11]. Poor manufacturing and handling practices such as production of the water under unhygienic environment, sharp practices, poor hygiene of factory employees and / or vendors and non-adherence to WHO or NAFDAC regulations [4], can lead to production of unsafe sachet water. These concerns led to the need for continuous surveillance of the quality of water consumed in Kano State. Thus, the intent of this study is to assess the physico-chemical and microbiological quality of selected brands of sachet water sold for human consumption in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria.
Materials and Methods
The Sample Collection
Sixteen (16) different brands of sachet water samples were randomly purchased directly from both street hawkers and shops in Kumbotso LGA of Kano State, Nigeria. Samples of similar brands were pooled and analyzed, and in triplicates from different street hawkers and shops in the study area, forty-eight (48) samples were used for this study, they were labeled appropriately. To avoid contamination, the edges of the sachets’ packets were cut using a sterile scissors and emptied into a previously cleaned and sterilized beakers as described by Airaodion et al. [17] and kept at room temperature; samples were analyzed 2 to 4 hours after collection, and the analyses included physical, chemical (assessment for trace and heavy metals) and microbiological quality, analyses were carried out in triplicate.
Water Analysis
All the glassware used in this experiment were washed with distilled water and sterilized in an autoclave at 121oC for 15 minutes. The sachet water packets were physically examined information such as product name, manufacturers address, batch number, NAFDAC registration number, manufacturing and expiry dates were recorded for each sample as described by Oyekuet al. [18] and Airaodion et al. [17].
Temperature and pH Determination
The temperature of each brand of the water samples was measured using a mercury bulb thermometer in oC, whereas the pH of the samples was determined using a digital pH meter (Clida Instruments PHS-25 Precision pH/mV meter). 100ml of each brand of the water samples was poured into a 150ml beaker for the determination. The pH meter was standardized with buffer solutions of pH values between 4 and 9 as described by Igwegbe et al. [19]. Moreover, the pH of the samples was determined by placing the electrode of the pH meter into the samples and recording the readings. The electrode was rinsed several times after each determination with distilled water. The determinations were carried out in triplicates.
Turbidity Test
Turbidity of the water samples was determined using a turbidometer (HANA Instrument HI93703) the values obtained were expressed as Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU) [3,20-22].
Conductivity and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Determination of conductivity was carried out using a digital conductivity meter Model 4520 JENWAY and, the total dissolved solids for each water sample was determined mathematically as a product of conductivity multiplied by a constant value of 0.6 [3,23], that is: TDS = conductivity × 0.6.
Determination of Heavy Metals
The heavy metals analyzed were arsenic (As), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb). Sample collection and handling was as described by Igwegbe et al. [24]; and the metals were quantified using a Microwave Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (Agilent Technologies 4210 MP-AES, FDGS Innovative Gas Company). This instrument uses a microwave excitation assembly to create a concentrated axial magnetic field around a conventional torch, which focuses the microwave energy where it is needed to produce a toroidal plasma with a cooler central channel that is suitable for stable introduction of liquid samples using a conventional sample introduction system. The intensity of each emitted line is directly proportional to the concentration of a particular metal element [25,26]. An Agilent 4210 MP-AES has a nitrogen plasma gas supplied via an Agilent 4107 Nitrogen Generator. Procedural blanks, calibration solutions, sample solutions, and reference sample solutions were analyzed in that order as described by Vudagandla et al. [26].
Microbial Analysis of the Water Samples
For the bacteriological analysis, Nutrient Agar was used to determine the total bacteria present in the water samples, MacConkey Agar was used for the determination of Coliforms, while Salmonella-Shigella Agar was used to enumerate Salmonella and Shigella [27]. All glassware - including Petri-dishes, test tubes, pipettes, flasks and bottles used in the microbial analysis were sterilized in a hot oven at 170°C for several hours, while the media and distilled water were sterilized by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 min and at 15 psi [24]. Each medium was prepared according to the manufacturer’s instruction. Plating was carried out in triplicate and pour plate method was used to make the viable counts. The samples were incubated at 37°C for 24-48 hours at the end of which the viable colonies in the three plates were counted and the mean was calculated and expressed as colony forming units (cfu/ ml).
Results and Discussion
Results obtained from the physical assessment of the sachet water samples are presented in Table 1. The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) requires that sachet water packets must contain information such as product name, manufacturers name and address, NAFDAC registration number, batch number, manufacturing and expiration dates [17,28,29]. All of the sixteen samples analyzed had the product’s name and address of the manufacturer, and NAFDAC registration number boldly written on the packets, while only two samples had the batch number indicated on the packet. 100% of the samples did not contain any information on their manufacturing and expiration date. Lack of information on the manufacturing and expiration dates makes it impossible to know the shelf life of such products, thus posing a threat to health of the consumers when they consume a product that may have passed its best before date. In addition, without any information on the batch number, tracking the source and realling of defective product will be impossible.
Also, noncompliance to NAFDAC guidelines and sharp practices by some sachet water manufacturers should be a source of great concern to all stakeholders in the food industry because it can lead to easy spread of epidemics such as cholera and typhoid fever. Similarly, the results of the physicochemical assessment of the sachet water samples are shown in Table 2. The pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids and conductivity of the water samples were observed to within the ranges recommended by WHO. The highest and lowest pH values recorded were 8.32 and 6.55, respectively; while the highest value for turbidity was 3.51ntu. On the other hand, the highest and lowest conductivity values recorded were 137.7 and 0.98 μs/cm, respectively; whereas the highest recorded value of the total dissolved solids (TDS) was 82.62mg/l. All the sixteen brands of the sachet water samples had temperatures higher than the WHO standard, this could be due to the fact that most of the brands of the sachet water sold in the study area are transported and stored using open vehicles and under the sun and/or shades, respectively.
The sources of heavy metals that could contaminate drinking water supplies include industrial and domestic wastes as well as the release of heavy metals into streams, lakes, rivers, and groundwater because of acid rain [30]. In general, a strong relationship between contaminated drinking water with heavy metals and the incidence of chronic diseases such as heart diseases, stroke, cancer, renal failure, liver cirrhosis, hair loss, and chronic anemia has been documented [31]. Arsenic and lead were not detected in any of the brands of sachet water samples as shown on Table 3, while copper and zinc were detected, though below the maximum concentration limits permissible by WHO. However, high level of iron (Fe) was recorded in only one sampled brand. It should be noted that continuous consumption of the water with high level of iron may lead to detrimental effects in humans.
The presence of indicator organisms such as Coliforms in treated drinking water is a measure of its sanitary quality [17,32]. The results of microbiological analysis carried out on the sixteen brands of the sachet water samples presented in Table 4. From the Table, it can be observed that Salmonella and Shigella were not detected in any of the brands investigated however, 31% (five out of the sixteen brands) contained varying numbers of total plate counts including Coliforms. The implication of this result is that the five samples found to contain total bacteria count are the same ones that contained Coliforms, this is an indication that the affected brands of the sachet water were not suitable for human consumption. The WHO standards for these microorganisms were set at 0.00cfu/100ml [17,33]
Conclusion
The physical assay carried out in this study informed us that none of the manufacturers of the sixteen sachet water brands provides all the required information recommended by WHO and NAFDAC for sachet water. Physicochemical analysis such as pH, conductivity, turbidity, total dissolved solids all conform to the WHO standards, whereas the temperatures recorded were all higher than that recommended by the WHO. Four of the five heavy metals (arsenic, lead, copper and zinc) analyzed where within the WHO permissible limits, whereas only one brand of the sachet contained a high-level ofiron (Fe); while five brands varied significantly from the WHO standards. It was concluded that those brands that varied from the WHO Standard were not fit for human consumption because of their contents of not only high total plate counts but also their content of Coliforms. Although, 69% of sachet water brand sold Kumbotso LGA of State of Kano State were found to be safe, there is need for continued surveillance and enforcement of safe drinking water standards to protect the health of the consumers [34,35].

TRAVEL THERE: CLUB MED PUNTA CANA IS WAITING
Here’s a few things I didn’t have a place for in other posts about Club Med Punta Cana.  I hope they’ll help you decide you need to go there and visit.  If so, call my friends at CTA Travel.
Dinner A La Carte
You never have to face down a buffet at Punta Cana unless you want to or unless you didn’t get your Indigo reservations in soon enough.  Indigo reservations can only be made in person at the restaurant on the day you want to eat there.  They start taking reservations at 9 AM and if you wait too long, you either won’t get the time you want or you won’t get in at all.
We celebrated our anniversary by having dinner at Indigo.  It was a lovely meal, but Bill made better choices than I did.  He had some kind of whole fish and he says it was one of the most amazing meals he’s ever had.  I had some Dominican shrimp in a plantain bowl.  Good, but not one of the most amazing meals I’ve ever had.  Here’s a few pics from Indigo and that meal.
 Another Dinner Choice
With so much free food and drink available, we didn’t see much reason to spend money that way, but there was one opportunity to do just that.  It was called La Cava.  On the patios of Samana and Hispanolo (for dinner only) there was a section set aside for La Cava guests.  You become a La Cava guest when you purchase wine, whiskey or cigars from La Cava and enjoy them with a meal.  If we’d been there longer, we might have considered it, but we did just fine with the included comestibles.
Shopping
There were a few shops at the resort and they had lovely things – but there were no bargains.  Not a single one.  Especially not on larimar, a semi-precious gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic.  The cheapest larimar I found at the resort was a pair of earrings with a tiny piece of larimar hanging from each stud.  The price was $80 and if someone had brought it to me, I would have thought it was some cheap trinket they got for about 5.  So none of my friends got larimar.
At the resort, everything is priced in Dominican pesos and while everyone can tell you how much that is in euros, they are not so good with dollars.  That made shopping quite challenging.  It also almost caused Bill a heart attack when he saw a receipt with a bottom line of 4210.
45
Several years back, Club Med celebrated its 45th anniversary by printing up lots of T-shirts and other items with the number 45.  The items sold like hot cakes  So, when their 50th came, encouraged by the sales of the 45 items, they printed up lots of 50 merchandise.  However, the 50 merchandise was a bust.  They almost had to give it away to get rid of it. but while everyone was rejecting the 50th anniversary merchandise, they were still requesting items with 45 on it.  You’ll see the 45 logo all over the resort on everything from t-shirts and bikinis to flip flops and beach bags.  Vintage 45 items are a status symbol.  We spent a lot of time speculating on the ubiquitous logo and as we asked around, trying to solve the mystery, we discovered there were almost as many answers as their were t-shirts.  Some Americans thought it was for Trump – NOT!  Some French people claimed it was the number of a popular soccer player.  I asked the Chief of the Village and he gave me this skinny.  So, in case you ever go to a Club Med resort and wonder, well here’s the answer.
Farewell to Punta Cana
I think that about covers it.  You should have everything you need to enjoy a resort vacation with Club Med – and I heartily suggest you give it a try.  I’m probably the only person on the face of the earth that wouldn’t think it was the best vacation ever, but my best vacations are devoted to satisfying my inner Museum Girl.
Would we ever return to Club Med Punta Cana?  If we were the sort to repeat destinations, then there is no reason we would not.  It is a beautiful resort with great food and a lot of fun things to do.  We just rarely return to someplace we’ve already been.
So will we ever do Club Med again?  It is certainly a possibility, but we’d probably only go for three nights, not five.  We had a great time, but while Bill is more active at sports than I am, neither of us prefer sports for days on end.  I can see us doing it before or after a vacation devoted to all my museums, palaces and historic sites or just getting away for a few day.
Winning the fabulous door prize from CTC Travel certainly gave us a new favorite possibility on our wish list, but we’ve already got the next trip planned.  I’m just not ready to tell you about it yet.  Right now, as I finish up this post it is June, shortly after our Club Med vacation, I have no idea what I’ll be offering up next week on Travel Talk, but please come back.  I promise it will be fun!
A Few Final Points TRAVEL THERE: CLUB MED PUNTA CANA IS WAITING Here's a few things I didn't have a place for in other posts about Club Med Punta Cana.
