Palm Springs - What I'm Packing
Palm Springs – What I’m Packing
We are vaxxed waxed and ready to relax y’all! OK even I am grossed out by the phrase vaxxed and waxed, but it just felt so apropos for our situation. And while I am fine with being slightly basic, I am certainly not comfortable with going full chueg. And while we are on the subject, I for one am delighted to finally have a term for that shiplap, “gather” sign, chevron print aesthetic je ne sais…

One word for you...
Tumblr media
Where I have not gone plastic-free:
Bread box: There are no plastic-free, airtight bread boxes that I’ve been able to find and I *must have* airtight. I make my own bread in a bread machine just because I like to, and the first few loaves I made here on the humid island grew mold within three days because my old bread box was not airtight. Bread bags are more eco-friendly but aren’t airtight, and will hold the humidity. I could find no silicon boxes and also could not find silicone containers/bags that I could be sure would be big enough to hold a loaf of bread and still close completely. I’m considering a giant silicone bag I found online, for marinating meat, so if I get that I can see if a loaf will fit inside. But I haven’t pulled the trigger on that yet, buying something just to marinate meat doesn’t fall neatly into the “I really need it now” category. So I purchased a BPA-free plastic, airtight box and it seems to be working very well. It’s so airtight that I was able to store bananas in it as well and there has been no sign of fruit flies.
Suncare: I spent two days working on the porch. I was under a roof in shade the entire time but I sunburn if I stand next to a toaster, so at the end of the second day I looked like Roy Neary in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. As in the right half of my face was bright red. I wasn’t wearing sunscreen because it breaks me out. All of it. Every single sunscreen ever. They all break out my face, neck and chest within 20 minutes of application. So I did some research and learned about mineral sunscreens versus chemical sunscreens and after reading a lot of recommendations and reviews, I ordered Alba Botanica Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen. Yes the tube is plastic, but there’s probably no avoiding that. The sport cream is 45 SPF, waterproof for up to 80 minutes, vegan, free of all the chemicals that turn my face into a Marscape, biodegradable and - get this - reef safe. That’s a “gee how nice” for most people but now that I’m swimming around coral reefs, shit got real. They also make a spray-on but it’s not legal to ship aerosol cans to Hawaii, something about them exploding under pressure blah-bibby-blah. Pretty bummed about that. For those wondering, until now I’ve worn a sun visor whenever I’m outdoors but it didn’t occur to me to wear it on a covered porch. I’m sure it didn’t occur to Roy on a dark deserted highway in the middle of an Indiana night, either. LATER UPDATE: Native makes a mineral sunscreen and I thought it wasn't water resistant, but it turns out that it is, although I should not have had to dig so deep into their website to find this out. Better than getting anal probed, all things considered. The Alba sunscreen is very thick and hard to squeeze out of the tube, and you can feel it on your skin at first but you forget pretty quickly. It is completely unscented. You have to make sure to rub it in well if you don’t want to look a little weird. It showers off clean and easy and after a few days with it, not a single blemish! Our pharmacy sells some water resistant mineral sunscreens. I didn’t price them the last time I was there to compare with online ordering and they are probably reef-safe because as of January 1 of this year, suncreeens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned in Hawaii to protect the reefs. But my next purchase will be Little Hands because it is made right here in Hawaii. I have been a big believer in ‘buy local’ for many years and they are plastic-free.
Groceries: Groceries haven’t changed. I’ve been using cloth shopping and produce bags for many years, they just bloody well work better. I do buy some foods in plastic, often there just isn’t any alternative. This was true even on the mainland. The main change is that now I walk to the store more often than not. I was able to walk to almost everything I needed when I lived in Austin’s SoCo in the early aughts and I loved it, I am so so happy to be able to do that again. Knowing I’m just a pleasant stroll away also means that I only buy what I need in the immediate future. There are a few exceptions for items that sell out very soon after the weekly supply barge comes, and don’t always get restocked even then. I drive when I have to buy heavy or awkward to carry things, like a case of soda. I’ve found conflicts with grocery choices because of a weird contradiction: non-hippie products in cardboard/paper packaging versus hippie products in plastic. I first noticed this when I went to buy sugar the other day - do I get the organic non bleached sugar in the plastic bag, or the nonorganic bleached sugar in the plastic bag? It wasn’t much of a conflict in any real world sense, just something that grabbed my attention. (I went with the plastic by the way, for the organic foodstuff that was going to go into my body).
Probably the clothesline, I have no idea what the hell that thing is made of, most likely nylon. We don’t use it for everything because it’s too humid here to dry everything in a reasonable amount of time. But we use it for some things - especially towels and swim wear - and I’m glad that we have it and it saves money on electricity. Our electricity generation here on the island is likely solar but still, no need to be greedy about it. Lots of people here have clotheslines, they are a common sight I am glad to see.
Bandages: I use Wellys. Patch bamboo bandages sound great, but I am clumsy AF and so I need bandages that are going to stay on through wet and dry and everything else. Wellys are flexible fabric, latex-free bandages made in the USA, in reusable tins that you can buy refills for if you don’t want a new tin, and that create a seal around all four edges. They are a certified B Corp so even with a bit of plastic, the company is still in line with my ethics.
Makeup: I use mostly mineral makeup, because it lasts longer (no organic ingredients to breed bacteria) and many mineral brands offer smaller quantities that are more sensible for people who don’t wear it everyday, or at least don’t wear the same colors every day. On the mainland I went weeks without wearing makeup and here I’ll probably go for months, it’s just such a casual place. I might wear some when we go across to Maui for a long weekend. But there are a lot of all natural and plastic-free makeup options out there these days, I am glad to see. If I need to replace anything I will shop with them but it’s just stupid and wasteful to toss everything out and buy new. One thing I won’t compromise on is mascara, I use Thrive because it really does what it claims, and it is still a company that aligns with my ethics. Many zero-waste brands sell cake mascara and that’s a complete nope for me. I tried cake mascara in high school, when I was going through my Audrey Hepburn/Sophia Loren makeup phase and I really didn’t like it. I also tried cake eyeliner and must confess that this elder goth never ever got the hang of liquid eyeliner, Icarus winged better than I can. I gave up a long time ago, pencil me in baby. Also, I wear lipstick, the paint-on stuff that stays on through food, drink, sex and a nuclear blast. IMO, lip balms are a waste of money and do not count as ‘makeup’, unless you’re only intention is to prevent chapped lips and with a small amount of color that lasts few minutes at a time.
Hair brush: I need a new hair brush that is designed for my long fine mane because my hair is getting a lot of punishment here, between wind and swimming and so more frequent washing and lots of pulling and tugging into braids. I bounced back and forth between Ibiza (boar bristles, wood handle) and Mason Pearson (boar bristles, plastic handle), for about half an hour. I finally decided to bite the big one and invest in the Mason Pearson. It is universally reputed as the best hair brush to be had on planet Earth. The was company founded in London by a Yorkshireman named Mason Pearson (bet you didn’t see that coming) in 1885. The boar bristles are either shed bristles collected from the wild in India and China or sourced from the meat industry as they are a by-product of processing farmed boar; you may ask so I will answer and yes, I do eat boar. Mason Pearson is still owned and run by the Pearson family and the Pearson women have always played integral roles in the company. Indeed Mary Pearson was the CEO for the 20 years following the death of her husband, founder Mason, and one of their daughters ran the top floor of the factory on Old Ford Road in London for 50 years. You can purchase a brush with a handcrafted made-to-order wood handle but while I am willing to make the investment in a Mason Pearson brush, I just can’t bring myself to be so self-indulgent as to even send a price inquiry for the wood model. This is where my best friend reminds me of the lengths I went to and the price I paid to obtain a bottle of the finest Irish whiskey in the world to demonstrate that yes, I can be that self-indulgent without much convincing. I just can’t bring myself to do it with a hair brush. I purchased from Pasteur Pharmacy in NYC because they made their bones, if you will, in their early years in the 60s by catering to humans with dogs.
Bed blanket: I just couldn’t bring myself to buy a bamboo blanket/bedspread that costs in the $275 neighborhood when the dogs will be spending at least as much time on it as we will spend under it. So we went with half cotton/half bamboo for a much more reasonable price. The temps here are warm by the thermometer but the air is heavy with humidity (100% yesterday and that doesn’t necessarily mean rain), so when the fans blow it around it can be pretty damn chilly. And the dogs steal the covers.
Clothing: if I need new clothing I will consider bamboo but it’s damned expensive. I was shopping for a second bathing suit recently because I’m at the beach often enough that I need a suit to wear while the other one is drying or waiting to be laundered free of all the salt and sand that didn’t wind up in my ass or under my tits. I always thought that sand-in-uncomfortable-places was a joke, I was very wrong. I spent two hours searching for bamboo or other plant-based sustainable fabric or recycled fabric and found nothing under a hundred bucks. Nothing. Not even a thong bikini (I already have sand up my ass, I don’t need material there as well). I’m not lounging instagrammatically on Waikiki, I’m swimming in 5+ foot surf every weekend at least, so I am not willing to pay that much for a suit intended for plenty of use and punishment. I got a bikini because it will be easier to discreetly rinse most of the sand away before going back up the beach, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

Page 6: Aging divas Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton are caught in a bitter country catfight and long-dead Patsy Cline is the excuse -- although there’s been little love lost between the Nashville icons for nearly 50 years their simmering feud exploded weeks ago when Dolly apparently took some veiled public shots at Loretta’s BFF Patsy who was horribly disfigured in a car wreck two years before dying in a 1963 plane crash -- in an interview Dolly recalled standing in the wings of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry at age 13 and watching Patsy perform and she remembered thinking about how awful it was that she got her pretty face scarred up like that -- Loretta was fit to be tied over the comments Dolly made about her old pal and thinks Dolly should stop running her mouth about Nashville legends like Patsy and Johnny Cash -- Dolly’s heard about Loretta’s complaints through the grapevine and brushes them off as quarantine boredom mixed with old age
Page 8: Blake Shelton’s going bonkers after fiancee Gwen Stefani told him she wants to skip the mega-million star-studded wedding shindig he’s been planning and elope -- Blake is all bent out of shape over Gwen’s latest switcheroo which calls for them to get hitched on the sly at a Mexican resort and she’s got him so mixed up he can’t think straight because for the longest time she wanted the Hollywood-style wedding with all the bells and whistles and was very particular about details but now she’s telling him to ditch those plans which have already cost them a small fortune and book a trip somewhere exotic so they can just just get it over with -- Gwen wants to elope so they can hitched at the Riviera Maya resort in Cancun where they could swap vows on the beach witnessed by her three sons and Blake has no choice but to give in to Gwen and he’s saying he’s fine with it as long as she’s sure this time

* FKA Twigs has socked actor Shia LaBeouf with a bombshell lawsuit claiming he subjected her to relentless physical, emotional and mental abuse and gave her an STD and she also accuses him of sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress -- although Shia says she’s lying Twigs insists Shia once choked her in the middle of the night and kept a loaded firearm by the bed leaving her terrified to get up at night for fear he’d think she was an intruder and shoot her -- she claims during an incident around Valentine’s Day 2019 Shia threatened to crash his speeding car unless she professed her love for him so when he pulled into a gas station she got out of the car but he threw her against the car while screaming in her face then forced her back into the car -- Shia also had rules about how often Twigs had to kiss and touch him -- Shia has been arrested several times on now-dismissed charges including assault and disorderly conduct
Page 10: John Lennon didn’t have to die -- that’s law enforcement experts’ explosive analysis after reviewing newly discovered evidence about the Beatles legend’s December 8, 1980 murder in NYC -- an odd series of coincidences and simple decisions put Lennon and his killer Mark David Chapman in the same place at the same time -- a review of the details concludes Lennon’s death was a strange result of flukes including his penchant for running around without protection and a missed appointment with his photographer and without these quirks of fate John would still be alive and recording hit songs

* The Spice Girls were likely liquored up on cut-rate champagne when they made their first album according to Emma Bunton a.k.a. Baby Spice who says she and her bandmates swilled the cheapest sparkling wine in the studio
Page 20: True Crime -- a chilling message left by the elusive Zodiac Killer has finally been cracked by a team of code breakers after 51 years -- a hodgepodge of numbers, symbols and letters called the 340 cipher was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle in 1969 and lawmen believed it contained key clues to the serial killer’s identity but the truth is even more chilling -- according to the experts the message says I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me, I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise all the sooner because I now have enough slaves to work for me
Page 21: Caitlyn Jenner is terrified after learning her skin cancer has returned a second time -- she was diagnosed with basal cell skin cancer a few years ago and had an entire layer of skin removed from her nose -- since then she’s been slathering on sunscreen but a new red spot on the right side of her nose popped up along with some crusty areas on her scalp but the nose patch was not cancer but hypertrophic keratosis or scaly damage from sun exposure -- however the dozen spots on the top of her head was squamous cell carcinoma which is a skin cancer that’s known to be aggressive so her doctor burned off the offending spots -- her doctor recommended she replace her 1960 Austin-Healey convertible but the chances of Caitlyn selling her prized ride are slim

Page 31: Kim Kardashian is reading husband Kanye West the riot act over his junk food benders that are sabotaging her healthy eating program and it’s led to more than a few arguments with no peace in sight -- he’s telling her to chill and let him live by his own terms but she can’t do that because it’s driving her crazy -- what really ticks Kim off is his junk food has totally taken over her section of fresh cut veggies, fruits and water and she wants him to get his own storage in a different part of the house where she won’t have to see it or hold her nose
* Kardashian momager Kris Jenner’s faux reality TV home is on the market for nearly $8 million even though she never lived there -- the L.A. estate was used for exterior shots of the image-conscious family’s compound on Keeping Up with the Kardashians but it was all for show -- dubbed the Iredell Estate the house also appears in True Blood and Chelsea Lately

Page 40: Kelsey Grammer admits he often breaks down and blubbers like a baby and it makes him feel better and he cries when he’s upset or sad or scared and it provides him a lot of relief and he believes years of tragedy in his life taught him to cry as a healing mechanism and now he sheds tears whenever he has sad feeling bottled up inside him
* A moneybags James Bond fan coughed up a whopping $256,000 for the handgun 007 Sean Connery toted in the first spy epic Dr. No -- the disabled Walther PP semi-automatic was supposed to bring in no more than $200,000 but the unidentified American buyer who claims to have seen every Bond epic went even higher
Page 44: Straight Talk -- Miley Cyrus is now blabbing about why she broke up with husband Liam Hemsworth after years of togetherness and just nine months of marriage and it sounds like a case of the pot calling the kettle black
Page 45: Furious Queen Elizabeth has booted Princess Eugenie and her husband out of Prince Harry’s Frogmore Cottage home in a bit to foil Meghan Markle’s plan to completely cut him off from England and the royal family -- pregnant Eugenie and her booze-seller husband Jack Brooksbank were ordered to quit the cottage and move back to Kensington Palace just six weeks after Harry and Meghan secretly leased them the home meaning Harry and Meghan are still on the financial hook for Frogmore which was a gift from the queen and they will have to underwrite the cost of keeping up the property and it also ensures Harry has a home in Britain if he ever wants to come back -- by moving Eugenie and Jack out the queen has made sure Harry still has a place to hang his hat if he decides to come back to leave his American wife

This cruelty-free primer enhances your eyeshadow and protects your makeup all day. Have a dinner date after work? No worries, this eyeshadow primer stays locked in all day. So apply in the morning and go all night long without worrying. Need to fit in a quick workout and don’t have time to reapply. We have you covered. Dries quickly and transparently prepping your eyelids for a smooth and even application of your shadow.
Why it’s SOOO good:
It’s Cruelty-Free
Paraben-free formula with a sebum-controlling powder that combats oiliness
Pearl powder that enhances eye shadow color, brightens skin and balances skin tone
Lightweight, well-balanced priming formula that prevents creasing and locks the color payoff in all day
Weightless feeling that’s non-greasy and long-lasting
Evens out the skin tone of eyelids
Ingredients:
Cyclopentasiloxane: Lightweight silicone with a silky, slippery feel that functions as a skin/hair conditioning agent.
Talc: An earth mineral used as a texturizer in cosmetics and also to help make them opaque.
Isododecane: A hydrocarbon ingredient most often used as an emollient. Thanks to its low viscosity and density, it has a high spreadability. Isododecane leaves a weightless feeling on the skin and evaporates easily.
Cyclohexasiloxane: A silicone. Primarily works as a skin conditioning agent and emollient. Like all other silicones, this ingredient has a unique fluidity that makes it easily spreadable. When applied to the skin, it gives a silky & slippery feeling to the touch and acts a mild water repellent by forming a protective barrier on the skin. It can also fill in fine lines/wrinkles, giving the face a temporary “plump” look.
Disteardimonium Hectorite: A vegetable-derived suspending agent used to thicken oil-based products and serve as a stabilizer for emulsions
VP/Hexadecene Copolymer: Synthetic polymer that functions as a binding agent, texture enhancer, and dispersing agent.
Polyisobutene: Polymer of the hydrocarbon isobutylene obtained from petroleum oil. It functions as a thickening and film-forming agent and does not penetrate skin due to its large molecular size.
Trihydroxystearin: Mixture of glycerin and fatty acids that is used as an emollient and thickening agent.
Bismuth Oxychloride: A synthetically prepared white, crystalline powder. A derivative of the metal Bismuth. Functions as a colorant, adding a white pigment to cosmetic products. It's frequently contained in makeup because it provides good slip, a silky feel and an excellent dermal adhesion that enables makeup to stay on the skin for long periods of time. It's especially popular with mineral powder makeup because can give either a white shimmer or pearlescent matte finish to the face. This glow serves several aesthetic purposes because, by reflecting light away from the skin, it helps camouflage wrinkles and age spots. This ingredient also functions as a bulking agent for liquid formulations.
Silica Dimethyl Silylate: A silica derivative used as an anti caking agent, bulking agent, slip modifier, viscosity increasing agent, emollient, and most often as a suspending agent. It is often found in cosmetics because of its ability to thicken while moisturizing, and provide long-lasting wear.
Trimethylsiloxysilicate: A silicone. It is a skin conditioning agent, and it is considered a soft skin adhesive. It can be used as an anti-foaming agent.
Propylene Carbonate: Liquid used as a solvent and film-forming agent.
Sorbitan Sesquioleate: An emollient. It is added to formulas as a skin soother and moisturizer and is derived from sorbitol, a humectant.
Beeswax: Natural substance made by bees to build the walls of their honeycomb. It is a thickening agent that has some emollient properties
PEG-40 Stearate: Functions as a cleansing agent, but also helps keep ingredients solubilized.
Caprylyl Glycol: Skin and hair conditioning agent that may be plant-derived or synthetic. Often used as part of a preservative blend in cosmetics.
Dimethicone: A type of silicone, forms a permeable barrier that works to prevent moisture loss and impart a wonderfully silky feel.
Ethylhexylglycerin: A synthetic skin-softening agent also used as a preservative, a carrier, or suspending agent for other preservatives such as phenoxyethanol.
1,2-Hexanediol: A widely used humectant and coupling agent. It is especially useful when bonding silicone products and can be used at lower concentrations than many other coupling agents, therefore reducing its irritation likeliness.
Methicone: A silicone based polymer that is used as a skin conditioning agent and surface modifier. It is primarily used to create a film or barrier for makeup to stick to. This barrier prevents sweat and oils from coming through underneath which would normally cause makeup to wear off. Methicone and all silicone polymers, have a large molecular weight; it is unlikely to be absorbed into the skin, helping it to serve as this barrier between the skin and other products, and also preventing it from penetrating the skin itself.
Tocopheryl Acetate: Its substantiated benefits include enhancing the efficacy of active sunscreen ingredients, reducing the formation of free radicals from exposure to UV rays, promoting the healing process, strengthening the skin's barrier function, protecting the skin barrier's lipid balance, and reducing transepidermal water loss. Attributed with antioxidant, anti-aging, moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and enhanced SPF properties, tocopherol acetate is valued both as a dietary supplement and skincare active.
Mica: Earth mineral included in products to give them sparkle and shine. The level and look of the shine mica provides depends on the color and how finely it’s milled. Mica's sheer, translucent and skin-hugging properties make it a popular ingredient in mineral powders. Mica powder reflects light from the face because of its glittering or shimmering properties, and can create the illusion of a smoother, softer and more radiant skin tone.
Titanium Dioxide: An earth mineral used in sunscreens that is capable of blocking both UVA and UVB rays; also used as a pigment.
Iron Oxides: Natural oxides of iron (iron combined with oxygen); pigments are used to enhance colors in cosmetics.
My Thoughts: I adore Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Primer. I was lucky enough to receive a same size in one of my ipsy bags. It came in a baby pink squeeze tub with black lettering. It has pointed tip that dispenses the product perfectly and a secure cap that makes it travel friendly. The product itself is a pearl pink but once applied it becomes transparent, its great for any skintone. Thank Me Later Eye Primer has a mousse texture, that becomes silky once applied. A little goes a long way, I only use a small dot for each eyelid. Its incredibly lightweight so it absorb pretty quickly.
Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Primer is beyond amazing. It locks in my eyeshadow and concealer. It even helps reduce creasing throughout the day. I see a change in my eyeshadow, its more vivd and intense in pigment. The only drawback would be that this eyeshadow primer did not even-out my skintone like it claims it does.
Would I purchase Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Primer? Yes,I love it! I believe its worth the splurge.
Pros:
Sample size from Ipsy
Baby pink squeeze tub
Pointed tip that dispenses product perfectly
Secure cap that makes it travel friendly
Pearl pink to transparent
Can use on any skintone
Mousse texture
Silky finish
A little goes a long way

I parked the car. Got out if the car. Looked up and nearly lost it. We got a poorly socialized rescue cat too (she lived on the streets for her first 9 months and was fed by some humans, but not much more). Most of my fellow classmates pretty much ignored me for the first few months, despite my best efforts to get involved in study groups. It wasn until I started participating in class that they started talking to me, and admitted they largely ignored me because they assumed I didn belong there and had no idea how to code because of my appearance. I was flat out told that I looked like an airhead because I dressed nicely and had makeup on most days.. Especially like, the peripera mascara. All of their packaging is cute/unique, but all she had to do was look at the side and she have realized it was a mascara, not a lip product. Which, I mean, peripera has like 8000 different products. Yeah I feel like OP is over reacting a bit. It's funny and who cares because it's not hurting anyone but the feelings of what sound like petty and rude people. I hated living in a place with a HOA. However, you are new to the game, so map knowledge and rotations may still be unknown to you. What I would suggest is to abuse your speed if you like using jger and similar defenders. Keep on the move, listen to you teammates for callouts you can flank to, and be braver running around, it'll come to you.. I love her, even though I absolutely do not collect high end 보은출장마사지 makeup or shop on her level. Instead, I love that she does, and has reviewed it so that when if I do want to buy a high end product, i have tons of pleasant, well informed reviews on them. I think if you can see her videos as a resource 보은출장마사지 rather than a lifestyle to emulate it great. Next, Malabrigo lace in Polar Morn and Violetas for a Bobble Yoke baby sweater for my new niece. I not ready to make this yet; I have a lot of learning to do before I feel ready to make a sweater. Also, this yarn is not superwash so I don know if it a great idea.. In most cases, how a piece of furniture stands up to wear is as important as how it looks. Durability is a primary consideration in choosing a finish. The most durable finishes, varnish and penetrating resin, are thus the two basic finishes for refinishing. And part of all this is the mental training I putting myself through. There is a limit of what you can do. The rest is up to nature and whether if it wants to thrive or not. Fun fact: Jesus used Eratosthenes in his sermons too! Jesus grew up in Egypt as a kid and probably heard the teachings there. He uses a spherical model of the Earth when he talks about the end times. He says "Two will be sleeping, one taken. Sunscreen is regulated as a therapeutic good/drug by the Australia federal government. Laws require them to be made with broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) formulations. Anything under SPF15 is regulated as cosmetic. Your upbringing has some deep implications for your future relationships. Also, you might want to spell out to your college financial aid office your family situation. An interesting and very coherent magic system, wonderful character development, strong female characters.

Venus 3000
Tumblr media
Definitely not my day. Either it will be my phone not ringing, either the ship getting slow as fuck to the platform or even Emily as I see her (and she sees that I see her) right before I was skipping line from a mexican dude for a sandwich. And neither did I get a nod nor a sandwich. Fuck.
I don't know why I said hi, I surely wasn't at my best and she didn't look too ok with it. I could pretend to study these ugly backs of the seats in front of me or keep on looking at the Pacific from my window while she was passing to seat at the first class. Sure, I could. But I was itching to learn why and how she justs appears here and just sits along with the richie rich folk. If only this notification for email and this nervous air hostess nagging about turning off out devices didn't hold me back from asking her on the spot.
"A reminder.
Make sure to fix your attitude and send some content, some good content this time, or we'll have problems to solve. Patience only lasts that long.
Sam, Assistant Manager."
Ah, simple, straight to the point and obnoxious Sam-the-assistant-manager as always, which she thinks she rules the world now that every serious person took a week of for the summer and she's left behind. I don't quite blame her, but she was asking me to reportabout local brunch restaurants and sunscreens just for the ads, only to get me to fly to Venus because Tyler got sickand all that crap.
Venus is just a dusty volleyball from the window when we get awaken by the stuff. Dunno if that's a tradition or not, but the pilot seemed to think that it was a good idea to sing happy birthday to each passenger that had birthday during the three month flight. It really was a good idea since I barely forgot Emily's birthday. I get myself around the seatbelts and get right back to them after the air hostess gives me the side eye. I take a minute to think about this and I see that i'ts kinda tricky to just play friends with her, so I stick to my shit. I take a look at my seat personal notifications to see what I missed. My sister's cat my only casualty. Pretty good if you compare that to the others beside me crying their eyes out for their loved ones that turned out less alive than expected. I guess I got pretty lucky. For a bit.
Cause this yuppie next to me takes his chance at starting a conversation with me about his newborn grandchild and as I'm known to enjoy this type of junk I tolerate this quirky little video of his daughter giving birth feeling physically disturbed. So disturbed I look away constantly, till I catch Emily in tears going to the bathroom of the first class (which is right in front of our class). I get closer to ask her what's wrong, only to get a cold shoulder. And I don't know what fucked me up the most, her attitude or this cringy video being almost twenty minutes long and me not having enough balls to tell him to stop it.
The pilot and his amazing texan accent wish us a nice stay at the colonies, thanking us for using Venus 3000 (yeah, wow) while I try to shut my helmet until the 'click'. We get out around this orange fog with some beacons shining in rhythm from far away. The reception authorities takes each one of us by the hand like babies until we get used to the different pressure. I take off my helmet first and try to communicate with this nice lady that holds me like her nephew about the distance from the hotel. I'm tired as hell and ready to sleep to my death.
I wake up from another notification from Sam-the-assistant-manager, underlying her previous nice words and sending me the schedule that I have to follow. If I can manage my time right, I could even get a second to pee between all those events, interviews and tryouts to get some footage (since the colonies authorities, for a reason I didn't quite get, were too willing to look for photos or videos you took during your time here, something that makes me understand what really got Tyler sick). But I shouldn't complain. It's only ten days and I got through the first one.
I get down, take just three bits and flee asking the reception about the Virtual Plaza where my appointment with the summer deputy head of the souther colony waits for me. I take the train get blown away by the ride. This so goddamn blue sky with small orange scratches from the dome, those weird asymmetrical buildings, those huge statues and columns resting on a never ending grass field and this coast. Yeah, coast as like sea (well, it's a big realistic pool, but still). I'm legit shook like the other passengers inside the train.
Somewhat irritated but gentle enough to not show it that much, Stephen Wang welcomes me with his uptight gestures and slick but uncomfortable warm suit (the colonies are always quite hot and summery). He looks a bit cold and all, but I get around him easily. Asking for some pics and then some answers to standard questions that no one gets uncomfortable with (about how he got here, how he feels, what the hell are the americans trying to build in this place along with these weird security measures) except for his security beast that checks my camera for footage and carries Stephen back to his car.
I walk around Virtual Plaza and see several kids bouncing around, playing with the slightly tweaked gravity in front of their disgustingly rich parents. Next to them some plain tourists playing with their drinks (it's too early for that) and a whole group of other tourists walking to the beach. I follow them creepily (they are in their swimsuits and I'm full clothed with a camera around my neck, just so everyone can get a bit uncomfortable) to this (close to a mile wide) shore where I let water touch my naked feet. It takes time to grasp what I really touch and/or feel.
Tired as hell, I return to the hotel to eat for the noon, getting several Venus facts from the speakers (couldn't give less of a fuck about them, though). And there she is once again, Emily, standing at the bar looking absolutely gorgeous, wearing something that costs like three times my salary. I get noticed, I smile at her, she smiles back and I decide to get to her while a old and bald penguin dude takes her by her hand for a spin. Not really hungry after that. I'm walking to the elevator with her quietly closing in. I look at her by accidentand see the same bitterness in her eyes, just like then before the take off.
Sleeping is not so easy on Venus. They tried all they could to simulate earth-like conditions (like day and night scheduling etc.), but that can't stop my biological clock from going nuts. So I fill my nights by looking at old convos with Emily as I deliberately avoiding her for the rest of the day. As for the work stuff, I managed to convince Sam that the communication delays are a pain in the ass and I can't send daily reports to get away with them. Sometimes I go for long night time walks, but those irish students looking for trouble and those faux cops that caught me filming the artificial forest the other day restrict me from enjoying anything but my room's satellite tv.
Days get so dry, dull and empty, too. When I don't have to ask the exact same things to weird army guys and Elon Musk wannabees, I need to listen at tiring speeches that all end up in how advanced and cool and hip this test is not only for humanity, but every form of life back to Earth. From top notch scientists and disgustingly rich white people to stupid youtubers and Robbie Williams (not kidding), all those people came exclusively to praise this initiative of the western world that officially puts the tombstone on the soviets after nearly ninety years of competition (not that it was that hard in the first place).
It only took a couple walks for me to see what those colonies had to offer me. All of those bright white columns, weird looking hotels and disturbingly tall palm trees just seem unpolished and lazy to me. Sand's just grated rocks, the sea smells like a chemistry lab, the food is processed to death and even the temperature gets a bit weird sometimes. The colonies are nothing more than huge hotel facilities, sprawling sparsely over a small island that floats in a large swimming pool. I'm fed up hearing about the hope of the future that starts herewhen I see old, pale fucks keeping on eating foie gras and using oil. This whole project is an ad that targets only the Kylie Jenners of this world that have a daily life of eating, sleeping and swimming in cash.
Sam-the-assistant-manager sure begs for these kind of reviews, but I'm risking my head for her. I only send her a draft without a slump of criticism, because I don't want any of those faux cops fucking with me just for writing bad things for them.
Three days before my flight, Stephen Wang drags me with his nerdy hands for another tour around the colonies. Oh look, art exhibitions, dance festivals, Robbie Williams (I needed this second time to make sure it was really him), even a luxurious cruise with a boat that smells just like burnt plastic. All slapping newand moderninside their names. All getting more and more random in my eyes. Wang clearly sees my disappointment and becomes troubled. He asks me if everything's fine, I respond with yeap, why notand not one second later I just leave my breakfast inches from the stern of the boat. So many days I spent here, and I only got to succeed in making a successful thirty year old career man lose his shit and getting nauseous from a pool. A fucking swimming pool.
Two days before my flight, my article looks like it's never gonna make it, especially with Sam's moaning about me giving away my hidden footage to Wang as an act of goodwill to the poor guy. I could finish the article regardless, but my mind starts to fade away. I spend more time looking at the forest from the window of my room than typing. It's already dark when a knock on the door kills my boredom. Emily knows me well enough to put aside my difficulty at finding something to say, dragging me to the beach with this cute rudeness that only she can pull off.
-You can be really mean if you want to
What can you say to her when she's one hundred percent right? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
-It's really hard for me to deal with your presence anymore, Emily. Try to understand me.
-Still, I don't deserve this kind of behavior;
-I know. And as far as you should know, I'm glad I found you here
-Really?
Really. But...
-But I don't quite prefer I found you here. It's not good for me to see you after all this times. I don't know how I could make this sound less douchey, but it is what it is.
I'm holding her hand to make her stay. She tries really hard not to hit me.
-You're making it so damn hard to trust you, you know that? I know you for so long and I still can't figure out if you crack jokes or turn serious.
I have a really hard time figuring this out myself, as well.
-I'm serious. It bugs me to act like nothing happened and this bald fuck touching you doesn't make it easier for me.
-You didn't seem to have this problem before, right? Let me remind you that it was you that didn't want to commit. What changed?
-Nothing
-You want it your way, as always
-Just like you, right? Only difference I have to wait for you to decide what exactly you want from me
-You're so bitter
-I'm in love
I can't stand fighting with her. She can't stand fighting with me. That's why we slow down a bit. We get cautious at our words now, we're testing each other's defences to avoid getting hurt.
-John passed away
-I'm really sor-
-No. No you are not. It's ok I guess, but I spent so much time with him and it got to me pretty hard
-You are wrong, I'm not that petty
-I was hunting you down for so many days to talk to you. You were hiding from me
It's difficult to make myself look more stupid.
-How you got here?
-John's health went south and he didn't want me to see him like this. It was something like a last gift from him.
-So you got this penguin to comfort you
-Please. Please don't make me regret my decision to talk to you. Please. I needed you in my life so damn much
I hate her for doing this. Not because she does it deliberately, but because it works. Most of the time.
-I think we have to stop having any type of contact, Emily. We can't do this anymore, can we?
I believe in what I say, I know I do, but it feels wrong actually saying, if that makes sense.
-You can't make it so damn easy to me. You just can't
-What do you mean?
-I do not intend to come back. I'm gonna stay here. Not coming back, like at all. You understand?
Oh I understand all right.
Just one day before my flight, I'm buried by the bed sheets and Emily. She plays with my hair and I lock myself on her as the purple dome turns to morning blue. Everything seems so right and wrong. Only this time there's no husband getting between us, just me feeling read to fall right off the window.
-Do not forget me, ok? I know I wont
And that's my soul being smashed to million pieces.
I greet her being super dazed, no idea why. My mouth is dry from the stress, the joy, the exhaustion and I can't help but puke inside the (empty, luckily) elevator. I'm sick, like legit sick. So sick that I lock myself back to my room ust to cry for god knows how long, only to get stopped by Sam. Where's the article, up your ass you fucking moron. I only got ten hours to get my head straight and there's no time for your dumb shit.
It is the same old lady who took me by the hand on my arrival that awaits with a big smile. I try to smile back but my lips are not responding. I could swear she almost pushes me to the plane, before I catch myself dragging my steps like a child. I get my helmet off to let me guilts breathe, trying to figure out how big I fucked up, how much of a coward I am for running away or how dumb I was for thinking about staying for her.
My condition's only getting worse. My ears are ringing as the passengers are sitting around me. They are somehow trapping me and I try to squeeze my eyelids until everything gets blurred so I can't understand much of what's going on and my plan's working pretty well until this australian chick shouts at the air hostess because I give her the creeps. I get up and get to the bathroom. I splash my face, look at my reflection, get disgusted, vomit and get out even more dazed than before.
A couple hundred of old ladies are staring at me with their either frighten eyes, waiting to see just where will I collapse. Unfortunately for them, Emily picks me up and sits me back down. Emily. Emily got a ticket and leaves. She leaves. She changed her mind and she leaves. With me.
-Be careful now, You all right?
-Emily, I think I love y-
-What?
Her face freezes, like I said something wrong to her. Her cheeks lose all of their color, those markings on her neck disappear, her long hair get more and more grey. I'm panicking, what the fuck is going on? Why is she like that? What did I do?
Nothing. I did nothing. It took a minute to get back to normal but here I am, stuck in my seat before sleeping, feeling the need to dig a hole on the floor and jump inside. Because it wasn't her.
It wasn't her.
It wasn't her.

-COFFEE
Coffee is our beloved beverage and I know many people who can’t function without it. Even though there are many benefits of it internally its effect on the skin is also well known. It can be your best friend in winter and it has been a very valuable product for me. While my face is a bit oily but my body is really dry so I have to be very careful which product to use otherwise my skin turns scaly and white. I would recommend this product to everyone with dry skin. It takes a bit more time to absorb people with generally oily skin. uhh,,,,skincare advice from ji? 🌸✨
Tumblr media
so i don’t usually suffer from acne but when i do it’s usually in response to stress or products. i’m also super prone to allergic skin reactions. SO,,, i’ve been trying to find a really good sunscreen that won’t irritate me + won’t make me break out for like the last year or so.
right now i’m using The Saem’s Eco Earth Power Sun Cream, SPF 50+ Perfection Waterproof Sunblock and it’s super good and has neither caused allergies nor breakouts. i swear i didn’t start using it bc of svt though that’s why i recognized the brand lmao. the pink version had really good reviews on althea and i originally wanted that one but since this was a birthday gift, my mom found one that also had good reviews.
scent: no noticeable one. it kind of lightly smells like baby powder? i’m really sensitive to smells bc of my allergies but this one is really good about that. i’ve had no issues with the scent.
white cast: there’s a bit of a white cast to it since it comes out kind of pink? but once it’s absorbed it just looks like i have a bit of a healthy glow! i usually put on a bit of bb cushion under my eyes + my chin + my nose + my forehead and it makes the worst of it disappear if it seems too white for my skin but honestly i haven’t had to.
absorption: it absorbs super fast! but that also means you should be quick about applying it esp. if you’re trying to be frugal! but it doesn’t leave an oily sheen but a healthy kind of glow which i like.
amount required: i use about a pea sized amount? the actual bottle is fairly small but when you only have to use such a small amount i think it’s worth it. the amount i use i usually dot it on my nose + forehead + cheeks + chin and then use the pads of my fingers to smooth it outwards. and whatever i have left on my fingers i’ll smooth upwards on my neck.
price: it’s $12.99 on amazon. it seems pretty average when i compare it to a drug store price point (my previous aveeno sunscreen was about the same and the results were awful for me)
anyways! sunscreen is important esp. when you live in a really hot climate like me!! it helps with skin aging + sun spots (which run in my family and i’m trying to prevent so!!) + dark marks from acne (seriously!!! i’ve noticed my acne scars fading a lot better and faster since i’ve started using sunblock) + overall skin appearance. i hope this helps you if you’ve read this far!

New Serums From Kate Somerville
Kate Somerville is one of my all-time, hands-down go-to skin care lines. (The Anti-Bac Clearing Lotion for acne and +Retinol Vita C Power Serum are must-haves)
Well — herald the trumpets! — they have a new line of serums called Kx Active Concentrates that are designed to firm, moisturize and downplay your fine lines, all without irritation (which is the bit that caught my eye).
Kate recommends layering two drops (because the serums are super concentrated) of the Kx Active Concentrates Bio-Mimicking Peptides Serum to clean your skin in the morning and again at night, and following up with the Deep Tissue Repair Cream.
In other news…
Incidentally, I “need” all this stuff.
OK, so I watch Emily Noel’s videos all the time because I love how down-to-earth she is, and she seems fun to hang out with, but for some reason watching this video of home-related soaps and cleaners, sunscreens, furniture and kids’ toys she loves made me especially want to BUY ALL THE THINGS.
The Dial pear soap is totally on my Target list, along with the Aveeno Baby Sunscreen (several other friends have also recommended it lately… I’m thinking it might be an unsung hero?).

5 Beauty Favourites: April 2020
My five beauty favourites for the month of April – I’ve gone back to them again and again, enjoyed using them all and will be sad when they finally run out. Although if they’re anything like my Medik-8 R-Retinoate I could be waiting a long time, because I just can’t seem to get to the bottom of the bottle!
Which is probably quite fortunate considering its price.
Anyway, here goes with the April Hit List:
L’Oreal Glow Cherie Glow Enhancer Lotion
I’ve compared this before to Charlotte Tilbury’s Flawless Filter (see my in-depth review here) but in actual fact it’s much more like her Wonder Glow. Lighter, sheerer, with less in the way of a tint. Regardless, the L’Oreal version is an absolute bargain and brilliant for adding low-key dewy glow before applying foundation or concealer.
You can find it online here* – it’s £9.99.
Anne Semonin Gel Mask
This is a very essential-oily mask with quite a tingle. It’s refreshing, reviving and makes you feel as though your face has had a brisk run along a seashore. Which is a weird concept. It’s forty-five quid but the tube is large. Lovely luxury buy for lacklustre, dull skin – I discovered it postpartum after having my first baby and I’ve recently returned to it after something of a hiatus!
Find it at Anne Semonin here.
Lumene Oleo Rich Serum
Well, this is a surprise favourite – I mentioned the rich cream from this Lumene range a few weeks ago and didn’t think that anything else would be as notably excellent, but the serum is just marvellous. It’s more of a light moisturiser than a serum, in a way, because as well as mega-moisturising glycerin it’s packed with nourishing oils.
In fact, if you’ve always wanted to try a face oil but worry about greasiness, this would be a beautiful way of dipping your proverbial toe. Just apply after cleansing and before moisturiser. It’s online here*.
Skinceuticals Discoloration Defense Serum
I’ve been doing lots of stuff out in the garden and (in the UK at least) the sun has been, at times, blazing. As well as a high factor sunscreen I’ve also been upping my antioxidants and pulling out the skintone-brightening big guns. Skinceuticals make quite a few of these “big guns” and the Discoloration Defense Serum is one of the latest launches, promising to dramatically help with dark spots and unevenness of tone. I’ll keep you updated on the results – I use a few drops morning and night before my usual serum.
You can find it (and more detailed info) online here*.
Drunk Elephant WaterFacial Mask
I’ve been using this on my non-retinol nights (current skincare routine seems to be: go in strong with retinol one night, pump face full of moisture the next) and it’s lovely – light and gel-like but not at all sticky. I feel the difference in the morning, let me tell you! I also quite often layer it on over the Lumene serum above for double-whammy effect.
Find the WaterFacial Mask online here*.
All of the above and more are included in this month’s favourite video. Yes, there’s a video! You might be wondering why an earth I’ve taken the time to write it all out as well as filming it: I only exist to serve. And to respond positively and proactively to feedback. So those of you who can’t abide my face/voice/mannerisms can just read my words instead…

How to Pick a Safe Sunscreen
When I go to my masters swim several times per week, many of my fellow athletes, as well as kids and moms who are there to swim at the pool for fun, are dousing themselves in chemicals without really thinking about what they’re doing. How so? Sunscreen.
We know that being safe in the sun isn’t as easy as it used to be. According to experts, the ozone layer is depleted by up to 65 percent, which can allow large amounts of ultraviolet B rays to reach Earth, causing skin cancer, and cataracts in humans and animals. And, with skin cancer being the most common cancer—about 5.4 million basal and squamous cell skin cancers are diagnosed each year—it’s no wonder we’re told to stay the heck out of the sun for too long, and when we’re in it, to cover up from head to toe.
People are listening. The sunscreen market generates $686.2 million in annual revenue and accounts for 59.4 percent of the entire suncare market In the U.S. The problem is, we don’t know exactly what we’re putting all over our skin, on our lips, our ears . . . and on our kids! Sure, we might assume that the tried-and-true brands we’ve loved and used for years are safe and reliable, since they’re familiar and comfortable, but this raises the very same question I often ask when I’m writing about what we’re eating: “Do we really know what’s in it?”
No, we really don’t. Even if we’re reading labels, half the time we’re not  sure what we’re looking for, and we’re trusting words like “natural” or “organic” to confirm our choices are good ones. With sunscreen, most of us aren’t even reading past the SPF number.
Consider the following.
A few years ago, Consumer Reports issued a list of their top four sunscreen lotions and top two sprays, intended to be used by people of all ages. They tested to see if the purported SPF on the labels was accurate, but nothing more. So, for curiosity, I decided to check into it myself, using the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database, which ranks skincare, sunscreen, makeup, haircare—all of it—on a scale of 1 to 10 for ingredient hazard score (10 being the most dangerous), for known and suspected hazardous ingredients. Four of those top six sunscreens ranked a 7.
Here are the full results.
LOTIONS
La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios 60 Melt-In Sunscreen Milk, $36.00. EWG ranks it a 7 (high).
Vichy Capital Soleil 50, $28.50. EWG ranks it a 5 (moderate).
Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50, $10.50. EWG ranks it a 5 (moderate).
Equate Ultra Protection SPF 50, a Walmart brand, $9.00. EWG ranks it a 7 (high).
SPRAYS
Banana Boat Sun Comfort Continuous Spray SPF 50+, $11.00. EWG ranks it a 7 (high). L’Oreal Quick Dry Sheer Finish 50+, $11.00. EWG ranks it a 7 (high).
By doing a quick search on the Skin Deep Database, anyone can see for themselves that even the most popular, highest-end products contain dangerous chemicals that are dangerous for us.
So how do you choose a safe, effective sunscreen for your family?
Let’s start with some basics—from the EWG’s report “The Trouble With Oxybenzone and Other Sunscreen Chemicals”:
The most common sunscreens on the market contain chemical filters. These products typically include a combination of two to six of these active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. A handful of products combine zinc oxide with chemical filters.
Lab studies indicate that some chemical UV filters may mimic hormones or cause skin allergies, which raises important questions about unintended effects on human health from frequent sunscreen application. The most worrisome is oxybenzone, added to nearly 70 percent of the non-mineral sunscreens in EWG’s 2016 sunscreen database.
In addition to oxybenzone, which ranks a dangerous 8 with the EWG and acts like estrogen in the body, alters sperm production in animals, and is associated with endometriosis in women and relatively high rates of skin allergy, you should also be on the lookout for:
Octinoxate (Octylmethoxycinnamate) (EWG ranks this a 6)
Hormone-like activity; reproductive system; thyroid and behavioral alterations in animal studies; moderate rates of skin allergy.
Homosalate (EWG ranks this a 4)
Disrupts estrogen, androgen and progesterone and and breaks down into toxic residue in the body.
Of course, even if your sunscreen doesn’t have these three common offenders, don’t assume it’s safe to use. Protect yourself and your family by running through the ingredients one by one using the Skin Deep Database.
Remember, what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it.

alright, prepare yourselves for a long-ass post about skincare below!
there are probably a million blog posts and youtube videos out there detailing how someone fixed their skin and there are reviews of countless “miracle” products
i appreciate all of these, but i feel like it’s a lot of teenagers talking about how they cleared up their skin and i just can’t relate to that. everyone tells you growing up that you’ll grow out of your acne and that is just a lie. it’s totally genetic and sometimes no matter what you try, it’s going to be a constant battle
i’m 25 and while my acne is drastically different than when i was 14, i STILL get it. i’ve got a baby face (aka a round face and chubbier cheeks) already so it’s hard enough to get people to take me seriously when i’m doing normal things or when i’m at work, but it’s even harder to do that when i’ve got acne. i’ve had patients question whether i was old enough to be taking care of them and i am constantly having to tell people how old i am so they’ll be reassured. (i have a big issue with adults not taking teenagers seriously to begin with, but that’s another post.)
so i figured i’d talk about what has worked and what hasn’t, what i’m currently using, and how my face is now.
things i’ve tried that haven’t worked well: prescription strength topicals with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, tretinoin tropical, every face cleanser you could think of, clinique, various facials, scrubs, masks, etc. etc.
things i’ve tried that DID work, but i no longer use: birth control pills (for about the first year), prescribed antibiotic [**], not wearing makeup, aczone
there are a few things i’m using now that i think work or am in the process of deciding if they work. after scouring the internet i figured i could switch up my skincare routine and i’ve found good results with that. i’m going to list out the things i’m using right now because holy crap, i don’t think my skin has been this clear in years:
acne products:
- *rodan and fields unblemish sulfur wash: i know, i know, hear me out on this one. it actually works! now, i don’t sell this stuff, nor do i have any really close friends who sell it. but one of my friends uses it and i asked to try it and i was amazed. i am not one of those people who broke out a lot the first week and then their skin cleared. it worked for me almost instantly - after two days i noticed improvement. yes, it’s hella expensive. yes, it’s kind of difficult to get unless you know someone who sells it. but i think it’s worth it if you’ve tried almost everything else and nothing has worked. i only use this at night. kate sommerville actually makes a very similar product with the same active ingredient, 3% sulfur. the price is basically the same, but accessibility is easier. i haven’t actually tried this one, but if for some reason i can’t get rodan and fields anymore, i’ll switch to this.
- facial wipes: i am tired as hell when i get back from a 12 hour shift or a night out with friends so used facial wipes all the time. i love the yes to cucumber and yes to blueberries wipes as well as the neutrogena naturals wipes and the simple wipes. i really don’t have a preference and i change it up based on what’s on sale that day. PLEASE take your makeup off at the end of the day!
- neutrogena on-the-spot acne treatment: pretty self explanatory. active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. salicylic acid doesn’t really have any effect on my face, probably from over use as a teenager.
- keihl’s ultra facial cleanser and *keihl’s rare earth deep pore cleanser: i use one of these in the morning or in the shower. i really like the rare earth deep pore cleanser! my face feels so clean after using it. and the ultra facial cleanser makes my skin so soft.
- lush’s grease lighting: just started using this, so i didn’t want to leave it off the list. i like how light it is and i’m always a sucker for lush products. it has tea tree oil and aloe vera. i can’t say for sure whether this one product is making all the difference, but it hasn’t hurt.
moisturizers/sunscreen:
- simple protecting light moisturizer: i’ll use this moisturizer when i’m going for a hike or a run and will be in the sun for a very long time. i’m a big proponent of sunscreen! especially since i have dark marks/acne scars.
- kate sommerville moisturizer  or *keihls ultra facial cream: moisturizers i use when i feel like my skin is a little dry or when i know i’m going to be inside all day. i actually just realized that keihls also makes an ultra facial cream with sunscreen that i’ll most likely be getting soon!
- *rodan and fields soothe moisturizer: my friend also gave me sample of this. i really like it and feel like it is indeed soothing!
dark spot/acne scar products:
- keihls clearly corrective dark spot solution: alright, here’s the one i’m gonna rant and rave about for a while. i’ve tried all the at home remedies for tone correcting and used a bunch of brand name dark spot removers and nothing worked until i got this. it’s like magic. i put it on at night and when i wake up, my skin looks so smooth and even. i don’t know what kind of witchcraft this was concocted with, but i’ll keep buying it. i would like to note that this works best if you’ve got a handle on your acne to begin with. it obviously cannot fix a dark spot you’re in the process of getting because of a new zit, but it drastically reduces the time it takes for those to go away.
- keihls midnight recovery concentrate: i used this every few days at night if my skin is feeling dull or if it’s been a particularly hard day. i love using it, but i’m not sure if it’s worth how expensive it is at the moment. maybe if i weren’t dealing with acne, i would see the results more clearly.
- *keihls clearly corrective brightening & smoothing moisture treatment: i use this moisturizer at night only and oh man, has it done wonders. combining this with the dark spot solution has definitely sped up my skin’s recovery process. as far as dark spots go, if they’re not truly scars left from acne, they WILL fade on their own, it just takes a very very long time. but i’m not willing to wait 6 months for clearer skin when i’m already trying to battle new pimples and new marks so this is life saving.
other things that have helped, that are simple fixes:
- i wash my pillowcase every week now
- i use a wash cloth for my face only. partially because it’s less bacteria, partially because i had to buy a whole new set of towels since benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric. i replace this once a week or if it starts feeling gross.
i hope this was useful and that you have clear skin forever!
*these products were all given to me as samples. keihls and kate sommerville are really generous when it comes to free samples if you buy a product at full price. i try to add as many new things when i restock on products i know i want.
**as a nurse, i have to put a note about the antibiotic use in here. i went to a dermatologist and explained that i would be getting married in a few months and needed a sure-fire way to clear my face. i knew that as soon as i got married, i could finish the course of antibiotics i was given, and then stop using it. I DO NOT RECOMMEND being on an antibiotic long term for acne. i feel like it contributes to drug resistant bacteria and that it should be used very carefully. if you are prescribed an antibiotic, do not stop taking it until you finish the course or until your doctor says you can.

My Thoughts: Brace yourself another product review from the BareMinerals Fabled Favorites Kit. This kit seems like an endless pit. But I shouldn’t be complaining since I am a makeup junkie. I want to mention that BareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipstick is very hard to find. I couldn’t even find it on BareMinerals website! I am pretty sure the line has been discontinued since its not on their website anymore. Although I was able to find some at QVC and Sephora but only on their Canada website. Sephora prices it as $23 but QVC is a lot cheaper at $18!
My BareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipstick has a different packaging than buying it individually. Since this is from the BareMinerals Fabled Favorites Kit its a small sample. It comes in a black casing, with a silver tube inside that twist up to reveal the lipstick. I didn’t like the cap because it felt like the cap can come loose at any moment. However that has yet to happen, I store it in my purse everyday and have traveled with it and it has never come off.
The texture of the lipstick is soft and creamy. The first time I used this lipstick it looked horrid on my lips. It didn’t apply evenly at all, I would get a jagged line when lining my lips. I desperately needed a lip liner but didn’t bring one at the time. It emphasize my chapped lips by a million and no matter how many layers I put on, it was patchy. I was in my car and I had to immediately wipe it off, but since I didn’t have a tissue I had to use a receipt hahaha.
After that experience it was hard to convince myself to give it another go. However I eventually got the courage to try it again but this time with exfoliated lips and it became a whole different experience. I didn’t need a lip liner because application was perfect. It glides on smoothly, even with a little bit of chapped lips. I only needed 2 coats to fill my lips. It didn’t settle in fine lines nor was it patchy. BareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipstick is comfortable on the lips with its lightweight and moisturizing formula. I strongly blame my extremely chapped lips for my first experience with this lipstick because I never experience that again.
The bubble gum pink creme sheen finish is an amazing color payoff because its extremely pigmented. I love pairing this lipstick with a lipgloss, the BareMinerals Fabled Favorites Kit even includes one that works perfectly together! The lipstick doesn’t move about on the lips nor does it flake off. It wears up to 3 hours without eating or drinking. When eating it does come completely off and I am force to reapply. With drinking it can survive for 2 hours, it does leave behind a stain but I do have to reapply eventually. What I found annoying is that the lipstick fades unevenly. When I freshly applied it does have the tendency to transfer completely off when drinking. But either way I use this more for everyday at work rather than an event because it doesn't last that long and I am forced to reapply. I occasionally wear this with a smokey eye because its great at keeping the focus on eyes instead of the lips.
Pros:
Soft & Creamy texture
No lip liner required
Glides on smooth
Comfortable on the lips
Lightweight
Moisturizing
Bubble gum pink
Creme sheen finish
Very pigmented
Pairs perfectly with lip gloss
Doesn’t budge or flake
Drinking leaves behind a stain
Cons:
Hard to find where to buy
Cap doesn’t seem secure
Very chapped lips looks horrible
Have to exfoliate lips
Have to reapply after eating
Fades unevenly
Freshly applied transfer completely off
Last for 3 hours
