Summer Makeup Shout Out! Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15
Happy Friday, friend! Thank you so much for the birthday wishes and sweet notes. You made me feel very special.
So, I gotta call out my new favorite base as of late, Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. It’s a sheer liquid foundation that’s lightweight and effortless with just a touch of pore blurring. It offers a little more coverage than a tinted moisturizer or a skin tint, but less than a full-on foundation, so skin still looks like skin.
From chanel.com:
Product With a soft, water-light texture and light-to-medium coverage, the tiniest drop of this hybrid fluid foundation creates a natural-looking glow. Skin looks refined and feels refreshed, for an exquisite makeup experience.
Composition “High Definition Light” pigments help ensure the complexion looks even, natural and radiant. Hyaluronic Acid maintains moisture and SPF 15 provides UVB protection.
How to Apply Shake before use. Gently pat, dab or stipple with brush onto entire face — or key areas— and blend from the center of the face outward.
Best part? It’s super easy to apply. I blend a few drops on bare skin with my fingers, and I’m done!

A Birthday Gift to Myself
Today’s my birthday, and ya know, it kinda snuck up on me this time around. I’ve been busy with work and end-of-the-school-year stuff for Connor, and between those things and the camping trip last weekend, I haven’t had much time to really think about it. *shrugs*
Anywho, every year I buy a birthday gift for myself. I haven’t done it yet, so sometime today I’ll pick up something tangible (I could use summer clothes). Also, while I was showering this morning after working out, it hit me that I could also give myself a non-tangible gift, too — like the gift of letting things go.
GIRL, THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS I NEED TO LET GO. I’ve held onto too many of them for too long. I think it would be a good gift to give myself for this next trip around the sun.
I would love to let go of…
Being too hard on myself.
All the worries/anxiety/monsters in general.
Trying to figure things out on my own. It’s OK to get help!
The idea of a tight tribe of moms, like you see in the movies.

What Are Your Beauty Confessions?
Girl, I’ve got so many right meow. Here’s a few to start:
1. I haven’t shaved in days.
I brought my razor with me on my camping trip last weekend, and I think I may have left it in the bathroom shower. I have a vague recollection of setting it on top of the machine where you put your quarters in to start the shower water. Needless to say, I’m super hairy at the moment!
2. I actually brought makeup with on my camping trip.
I always see a handful of ladies wearing their warpaint when they’re camping and I think to myself, hey, I can do that, too! For my trip last weekend, I packed brow pencil, brow gel, mascara, a lash curler, a stick of coral Chanel cream blush (I don’t know why, but Chanel seemed appropriate for the woods) and a sheer lipstick. Did I wear any of it? Nope. LOL! There’s always next time.
3. I put blue winged liner on today just so I could feel alive.
I’ve had crazy work deadlines lately, and it’s starting to take a toll on my mental health. Super stressed, dude! This morning I forced myself to do a full face, and it really helped my mood.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 732
So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).
1. A fancy makeup line that you like?
Um, all of them? I do have a soft spot for Chanel.
2. Lip balm or lip tint?
A moisturizing lip tint, please, in a sheer coral.
3. Pick a face mask: moisturizing, balancing, exfoliating, calming or firming.
Ooh, my skin could use some calming right meow.
4. Creamy face wash or foamy face wash?
Creamy all the way.
5. Carnations or baby’s breath?
Baby’s breath.
6. Yellow or orange nail polish?
I’d love a creamy pastel yellow, something in the same exact shade as whipped butter.
7. Something you’re looking forward to this month?
I want to say something fun like swimming in the pool, but honestly, I really can’t wait for my allergies to just be done already! They usually taper off in mid- to late- June.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 713
Rosie was wondering if you’ve ever spent the night in a tent as it was being pummeled by a deluge of rain.
Yes? No? Maybe so?
When she asked me this today, for the first time ever, I answered “yes!”
We went camping this weekend at Casini Ranch Family Campgrounds on the Russian River, and because Rosie is family, I invited her to come with us. For a second there, I thought she’d say yes because she’s currently into etymology, but she meowed a soft “No thank you,” and then mumbled something under her breath about not getting along with Gordy, the current Casini Camp Cat Mascot.
You know, I’m not surprised Rosie declined. She’s the type of cat who gets too caught up in her plots, so a lot of other cats assume she’s standoffish or disinterested, but really, she’s just working out science equations in her head.
Tabs
Tabs, on the other hand, was your ultimate outdoorsy cat. He jumped at every opportunity to spend time in the woods camping, fishing and backpacking through the remote wilderness.

Saturday Surfing, June 4, 2022!
Hello from the woods! I’m camping with my fam-bam this weekend, so short and sweet Saturday Surfing today.
Whatever you’ve got going on this weekend, I hope it involves s’mores. 🙂
This week’s reading
How to wash your hair while you’re in space.
In case you plan on doing a lot of swimming this summer…
Using a dermaroller for hair growth is a thing.
10 of the dreamiest lily of the valley perfumes.
Would you like some scratch-and-sniff wallpaper?
What to do if your cat has too much catnip!
I made this with shrimp and it was absolutely delicious!
I love this show so much.
Classic Madge!
OK, so now I want that helmet.

Putting Sunscreen on Top of Makeup Is a Thing
Good morning and happy Friday!
Something fascinating I learned recently about liquid sunscreen is that you can touch up it throughout the day by reapplying it directly on top of makeup.
MIND BLOWN!
This is assuming you’ve already got a layer (or two) underneath your usual face paint. Chances are you’re already wearing sunscreen underneath your foundation, blush, etc. if you’re going to bother reapplying your sunscreen in the middle of the day.
Oh, and this is also assuming you’re not wearing super dark blush or a black smokey eye! It seems to work best when the shades aren’t too intense.
That said, here’s the gist:
Texture is key. A liquid sunscreen with a watery gel-like consistency works best. Anything too thick or heavy will move stuff around. Two to consider are Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen and Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence.
You’ll want to pat, not rub. Use your fingers, a sponge (don’t wet it; leave it dry) or a synthetic foundation brush to pat the sunscreen on your skin. Patting minimizes moving the making underneath. Keep patting until the sunscreen’s fully absorbed.

Quick Makeup Tip: Let Your Liner Do All the Heavy Lifting
When you’re pressed for time, use your eyeliner as your shadow! Pencil liner usually works best; I like pencils with a little bit of slip, but not too much, like the MAC liners — Powersurge and Teddy are two of my favorites.
I’m wearing Powersurge all over my lids in the pic below…
Oh, and try not to overthink it! Just sketch a rough shape on your lids with your pencil, then smudge and blend with either a finger or a fluffy domed shadow brush.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Sunscreen Shout-Out! Bliss Block Star
I discovered Bliss Block Star Sunscreen last year around this time, and it’s been a go-to ever since!
“Hey, now! You’re a block star. Get your game on, go play. Hey, now! You’re a block star. Get the show on, get paid. And all that glitters is gold; Only shooting stars break the mold.”
SORRY, GIRL, but I had to do it. 🙂 This song burrows its way into my brain whenever I pick up Block Star, which, by the way, is the newest item to join the Bliss permanent lineup. It’s a physical sunscreen, and, like all of the items in Bliss’s skin care collection, this tinted mineral sunscreen is cruelty-free.
I wore it on my mug the other day when El Hub hugged me, and he said, “You smell really good.”
Good sign!
It smells like lavender, and it lingers for about 15 minutes or so. I like it, and apparently so do the peeps in my circle!
The tan tint is a surprise. It appears lighter and peachier than the CeraVe tinted mineral sunscreen, so I assumed it wouldn’t work for someone like myself with tan skin, but it completely disappears after you rub it in.

Sunscreen Shout-Out! Black Girl Sunscreen Kids SPF 50
Good morning, friend! Right before I sat down at my computer I slathered myself with my new favorite sunscreen, Black Girl Sunscreen Kids SPF 50. If you find yourself constantly annoyed by greasy, sticky, sunscreens that take forever to rub into your skin and leave a gray cast behind, then you’ll need to grab a tube ASAP.
It’s a chemical sunscreen with the following actives: avobenzone 3%, homosalate 15% and octisalate 5%. It doesn’t have parabens, fragrances, silicones or aluminum, and it’s cruelty-free.
I picked up at tube at Target for $9.99, so it’s pretty affordable and easy to find, although I do wish the 3-ounce bottle was a little bigger.
Anywho, it’s one of the most comfortable sunscreens I’ve worn, hands down. It’s not sticky, sinks in fast and doesn’t have an overly obnoxious sunscreen scent. Connor and I wore it last weekend to an outdoor festival in our town, and she didn’t protest as much as she usually does when I put sunscreen on her, LOL!
The festival was held by the local Greek Orthodox Church, and we specifically went to watch a dance performance by the kids dance troupe.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 731
So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).
1. Temporary hair dyes: yes or no?
Yes, please, but only the sprays that wash out with shampoo. When I was getting my hair colored, I loved temporary spray dyes for my roots. My favorite was Rita Hazan Root Concealer! It’s not stiff or sticky and washes out easily.
Side note: I’m seriously thinking about doing a demi-permanent color to cover my grays. I’ve been going back and forth for the last couple weeks.
2. Your favorite magazines from back in the day?
When I was a teenager, I loved reading “Sassy,” “Seventeen and “YM.” Occasionally, I’d get my mitts on a teenybopper fan magazine with New Kids on the Block on the cover, but that was rare. I was more into beauty than boys at that time.
When I was in my 20s and 30s, my favorites were “In Style” and “Real Simple.”

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 712
Was Tabs solar powered? He may have been. With all the time he spent lounging in sunny spots, you’d think that all of the energy he absorbed would have to go toward something, and maybe it did. Perhaps it manifested itself through his fabulousness.
I’ll never forget — and this is going to sound very cat lady of me — how his fur smelled after he’d been lounging in the sun for a while. He’d be so chill and let me pick him up and take a big whiff of his warm belly. It smelled like raw bread dough. 🙂
Rosie
So far Rosie has claimed two favorite sunny spots in our house. The first is in the upstairs hallway at the top of the stairs. There’s a sunny window there, and you’ll find her there approximately between 9:30am and 11:30am every day. Sometimes before she’ll plop down, she’ll sit there staring at my back from behind while I’m on a video call, and I can see her little face on the camera. My coworkers joke that she looks like she’s plotting my demise.
Little do they know, she’s just working out complex calculus derivatives…
Her second favorite spot — her afternoon spot — is right next to the downstairs sliding glass door, where you’ll find her daily after 3pm enjoying the breeze and birdsongs from our hill outside.

Good morning, beautiful! Sending you calm and joyful vibes this morning. Are you just as relieved as I am to finally make it to the weekend? I can’t wait to have a second cup of coffee and then work out. That’s my plan, and I’m stickin’ to it.
This week’s reading

What Are Your Biggest Summer Beauty Concerns?
Hi, friend. Before we get into today’s Beauty Q&A, I just wanted to say happy Friday, and TGIF. I’ve been quiet because I’ve had to feel some feelings. The world is a scary place, and MBB is usually my safe haven, so when I sit down at my keyboard in the mornings, I try to do it with a warm heart. Some days are so much harder than others, though, especially when I realize how everything feels so much more fragile than it did when I was a child.
I hope that wherever you are today, you and your family are feeling steady, loved and safe. Those things aren’t guaranteed for any of us, it seems, so any day you have them in your life is a gift.
DEEP BREATH. I think I’m ready for a little lighthearted chat about beauty; how about you? I need a momentary distraction.
As you know, summer is just around the corner. We got a preview a couple days ago in the Bay Area with temperatures in the 90s. I’m so not ready to be covered in sweat every time I leave the house, ugh.
At least the heat is a dry heat, though!

Air Dry Adventures!
There’s something so inspiring about a fresh chop! Now that my hair is shorter and has more shape, I’m excited to do stuff to it again. (It’s been a while!)
On that note, I’m trying some new things. I’m on a quest to find products that help my mane look presentable after air drying.
R+Co Sun Catcher Power C Boosting Leave-In Conditioner: A leave-in conditioner that adds mega moisture without weighing strands down. You can use it on wet and dry hair! I’m on a mission to boost volume, which is why I wanted to try it.
R+Co Zig Zag Root Teasing + Texture Spray: A lightly tinted texturizing spray that lifts roots. You can also use it on the mid-shaft and ends for lift, shape and hold.
R+Co Sail Soft Wave Spray: A lightweight spray that encourages soft, natural looking waves. You spray it on wet hair before air drying or using heat tools!
dpHue ACV Daily Scalp Serum: An oil-free serum that’s supposed to balance and hydrate the scalp while also encouraging hair growth.
Urban Decay Naked Half Baked Palette: A travel palette of powder shadows inspired by the iconic shade Half Baked.

Quick Makeup Tip: Bronzer Unifies Your Look
Your makeup can be as complicated — or as simple — as you’d like. If you’re in the mood to streamline, then grab your bronzer, and apply it strategically to multiple places. This not only simplifies your routine but also unifies your look. Sweep it on cheeks as a blush-slash-contour, around the edge of your face to add warmth, and in the crease for depth. The result? Easy monochromatic makeup.
Today I’m wearing an old favorite, MAC Give Me Sun Mineralize Skinfinish. It’s a warm medium golden brown with a slight sheen and a finish that looks natural on skin. I’m wearing it on my lids (just in the crease), on my cheeks, across my nose and around the edge of my face.
This natural, fresh look with warm browns and neutrals was easy peasy and took me 15 minutes! The other items I used…
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Wheat
Kevyn Aucoin Super Natural Conceaeler in Medium EC05
Hourglass Retouching Fluid in Sand
MAC Costa Riche Liner
MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash
Anastasia Beverly Hills in Medium Brown
MAC Boldly Bare Lip Liner with MAC Spite Lipglass
Building those happiness muscles, day nine
Hiya!

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).
1. Coconut or lemon?
I like both, but today I’m going with lemon. I’m thinking lemonade, lemon bars, lemon print EVERYTHING, lemon in my tea with loads of honey… YUM!
2. What’s your hairstyle today?
I’m wearing it down today. It’s wavy and on the slightly messy side, which I did on purpose. I’m learning to embrace the chaos!
3. Can you do a backflip?
Oh, hell no. Then again, I’ve never actually tried to learn how to do one. I mean, maybe if I had lots of time to warm up and stretch, and I tenaciously trained for months? Maybe.
4. Would you like dessert?
Always! And I don’t plan on sharing mine with anyone else. 🙂
5. A color you like wearing?
Hmm, well, I recently discovered that I enjoy wearing yellow very much!
6.
