Underrated Fictional Fathers
Earl Devereaux
I mean, let’s think about this logically:
Very first second we meet him, basically confirms that his son’s safety & success come first
Speaking to Flint in an apologetic & somber tone, admitting that yes, he’s said a lot of admittedly threatening and disapproving things to him, but ultimately does want to move past it for the happiness of his family
Commissioning an entire ice cream snow day for his son’s birthday alone
Showing genuine concern for his child’s health after he falls into a food coma near the end of the film
Pushing tooth and nail through a literal tsunami of food to protect his loved ones
Changing professions after moving to California, all to ensure his family a stable income
AND promising to take his child on adventures with Flint & The Gang once he gets his first chest hair
Dad Score:
10/10
Beautiful; Exemplary Even.

Had the most awful dream I made a post like “not my baby ass forgetting the difference between stonewall and Stonehenge” and then I got chased around a lovely picturesque candy town by my enraged fictional brother who was trying to shoot me dead for making that post.

Thinking about a Leverage Regency AU and how easy it would be…
The place is London. The year is 18—
Rev. Nathaniel Ford: a disgraced Irish vicar. (Sorry Nate, I couldn’t make the Catholicism work; you’re a Protestant now 😔✊) Fell out with God after losing his son, Samuel. Then he subsequently fell out with his patron, an Earl, who would not fund an expensive surgeon for Sam’s care, and finally with his wife, Margaret. Displaced from his station, his credibility, and power as an agent to nobility, Nate moves quietly to London, hoping to realize his revenge or to drink himself to death - whichever comes first. His parish is now being preached to by a Rev. James Sterling.
Mrs. Sophie Devereaux: a spy through and through. She might actually be a duchess, but didn’t you see her in that terrible play on Drury Lane? No one’s really sure. In society, she’s viewed as an eccentric and slightly mysterious salon hostess, but that cover allowed her to play the British and the French governments throughout the end of the 18th century. A metropolitan girl at heart, she’ll never be found in the country unless planning to procure a particular pièce d’art from one of the gaudy estate manors there.
Mr. Elliot Spencer: began his career at 9, as a cabin boy for a naval vessel. He saw the world twice over, but also witnessed the cruel hierarchy between officers and sailors first hand. He roved through the navy and the army doing little more than grunt work, but studied the martial and combat techniques of every place he went. Now he’s just trying to live the quiet life in London as a bruiser for hire.
Mr. Alec Hardison: a man who has lived many lives —aided, of course, by his job as a private banker, moving around the wealth of London at his leisure. In his line of work, he has picked up the ins and outs of all the governing bodies and businesses in the empire. Add that to his virtuosic ability to pick up any form of study and Mr. Hardison could bleed London dry, given the right reasons. For now, he enjoys the high life thanks to the fortunes of his “betters”.
Parker: an urchin, a waif, the stickiest of fingers in the nicest of neighborhoods. Once the apprentice of the notorious criminal, Lord Archibald Leech, the Gentleman’s Thief, she’s since left his tutelage and is now operating unseen in the big houses of Grosvenor Square as a scullery maid, putting enough bits and bobs aside to graduate from service and to never look back again.

Aegon: I hate this girl and we have nothing in common and I have no interest in her whatsoever
Also aegon: basically going out in attempt to seek a more well adjusted version of his mother
(Meanwhile, somewhere Robert Devereaux 2nd Earl of Essex is twirling his moustache from the afterlife, cackling bc honestly, bold of you to assume any descendant of mine can be well adjusted.)

REVIEW
The Lady Knows Best by Susanna Craig
Goode’s Guide to Misconduct #1
The odd duck in the Burke family, always overlooked, merely average…or so she thinks...suddenly becomes the focus of rake Miles Viscount Devereaux often referred to as the devil, Devereaux. Daphne Burke has ideas that might make some think she is a bluestocking or radical reformer or just trying to find her position in the world so when an opportunity to write for a magazine appears, she is eager to take it thinking that she can write advice for young women even though she is still a rather naïve young woman herself. And then…the story really begins…
 What I Liked:
* Miles: wealthy, good family, titled, only child, cares about his home and the person who raised him, good friend, perhaps dyslexic, deeper than he appears to be on the surface, I liked him
* Daphne: second to last sister, opinionated, likes animals, believes rakes are despicable and to be avoided but is rather tempted by Miles
* The idea of the Magazine and thinking that more than likely the women involved with it will star in the books of the series – getting to meet them in this book was a taste of what is to come
* Meeting Daphne’s family – I think some of them and Mrs. Goode were in previous books by this author
* Alistair Hawthorne, Earl of Ryland: older brother of seven sisters, responsible for his siblings for 15 years, has severe allergies, good friend, good friend of Miles, hope he has a book of his own
* The way Miles and Daphne’s perceptions about one another and what they wanted in life changed as they grew and matured through the story
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to
 What I didn’t like:
* That it took awhile for me to warm up to Daphne and actually believe she and Miles would have a good marriage…it did happen though…over the telling of the story.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books-Zebra for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 3-4 Stars
     BLURB
In her print debut, award-winning author Susanna Craig launches a new Regency historical romance series, based around the daring ladies’ magazine, Mrs. Goode’s Magazine for Misses, Being a Guide to Improve Conduct and Promote Wisdom among Young Persons of the Fair Sex—also known as Goode’s Guide to Misconduct—and the witty, clever, often rebellious heroines behind it, including a controversial new advice columnist. A modern twist on the genre, will appeal to fans of Ella Quinn, Sabrina Jeffries, and those who love faster-paced, innovative historical romance featuring strong women. Serving as the advice columnist, ‘Miss Busy B.’, for an often-subversive ladies’ magazine is the perfect outlet for Daphne Burke’s outspoken nature. But when she advises a young lady of the ton, to break off her engagement to a notorious rake, the consequences take Daphne beyond the page and into her real life. Miles, Viscount Deveraux, sometimes known as ‘that devil Deveraux’, needs a respectable bride by the end of the Season, and he’s bet a fortune that he can get one. Now, his fiancée has not only changed her mind—but done it publicly, in a letter to London’s most infamous magazine. With the stakes high and time short, it seems reasonable to him that the columnist responsible should come to his rescue and marry him instead. Fortunately for Miles, Daphne is eager to escape the pressures of the London marriage mart. She agrees to a courtship. But at the end of two weeks, she intends to turn him down in a big, splashy, scandal that will ruin her reputation and set her free. There’s just one shocking wrinkle: Who knew being ruined by a rake could be so much fun?

The Shakespearean Ciphers Examined: An Analysis of Cryptographic Systems Used as Evidence That Some Author Other Than William Shakespeare Wrote the Plays Commonly Attributed to Him by William F. Friedman and Elizebeth S. Friedman.
This book examines in exquisite and rational detail why and how every cipher (most often attributed to Francis Bacon) applied to the Works of William Shakespeare is invalid and null. The Friedmans were top cryptoanalysts in their day. Elizebeth Friedman is famous for being the codebreaker that decrypted Al Capone’s messages and less famous for being the cryptanalyst that broke the Nazi spyring in South America during World War II. Her husband, William Friedman worked for the government as a cryptanalyst and worked on Nazi spyrings in Europe. This book, written after the War, examines the cryptography often ascribed through the centuries to disprove Shakespeare’s authorship. They meticulously explain, provide historical reference, test, and debunk each method deployed by what they call Baconians who favor Francis Bacon as author of the Works. They delve into printing practices of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, also proving the ciphers used to be false. It is highly readable and understandable. The oddest elements of theories they debunk have more to do with who Baconians believe Francis Bacon to be and less to do with their belief in authorship of the plays, although that is intertwined into it. The Friedmans detail and address the ciphers also commonly believed to be hidden within the Works by Baconians that detail the parentage of Bacon. They believe, with no evidence whatsoever, that Francis Bacon was the product of a love affair between Queen Elizabeth I and her favorite Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Not only is he royal, there’s evidence that he’s also the half brother of Robert Devereaux, Earl of Essex and that the Earl conspired with the Queen to kill Dudley, their father while he was his own mother’s lover. That Baconians believe these notions makes the entire cipher element all the more implausible in its presentation. For the question of authorship and the examination in my book chapter, none of this is really relevant to the question save to be a counter to a documentary that relies on the very ciphers debunked heavily by the Friedmans nearly 60 years before the documentary was produced. In the end, it should not matter who wrote the Works of Shakespeare. After all, they still exist no matter what name is slapped on it. Rather, it matters most to those who have divided themselves into the camps of Baconians or Stratfordians. Personally, I find the cipher to be beyond ridiculous not because I believe that strongly in Shakespeare’s authorship, rather it’s because it is so beyond over complicated. Is it not simple enough that Shakespeare is Shakespeare and wasting precious time pouring over text to dig up some wild cipher to prove otherwise is just silly? And why Francis Bacon (who Baconians also believe wrote all of Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, Philip Sidney, and a handful of other notable Elizabethan authors on top of his own works)? It just seems tedious when one thinks it through, and it is clear by the end of the book that the Friedmands have found the exercise just so.
