What if the ultimate goal of Lumon is to create a class of workers that are always productive and never discontent? A group of people that are severed and programmed to be “happy slaves” through the mastering of the four tempers? This would ensure the ruling class would be able to exploit their labour and hoard wealth without ever having to worry about them revolting.

Take Gemma for example. If you compare her to the rest of the innies she’s the closest thing Lumon has to a “happy slave”. She doesn’t appear to have a strong sense of self or exhibit strong emotions but exhibits a sense of duty to the company and its values. This is probably why they need Mark to complete the Cold Harbour file. By perfecting her tempers, they’ll have the exact proportions for a person to become a “happy slave”.

And what if they found a way to transfer consciousness? They could hypothetically resurrect their deity, Kier Eagan, and the ruling class could live forever while accumulating their wealth. They’d essentially cultivate a utopia for billionaires.

The concept of Kier's """twin""" is so interesting when paralleled with Severance. Kier jerked off in the forest and was ashamed of it, so he made up a fake brother to blame the act on. Someone else to take the blame and get punished. It was him who jerked off, not me. He was the sinner, not me. So Dieter got punished, not Kier. The Innies really are just the Outies' punching bags to take the punishments, and bear the consequences of whatever their Outies do. Mark drinking all day and leaving Mark S to deal with the hangovers. Gabriella wanting kids, but leaving Gabby to bear the pregnancy and childbirth. Severed workers not wanting to work, so their Innies have to do it.

the thing is that helly would have wanted irving to do that. the woman who spent the first few episodes trying to kill her outie to send a message. helena doesn’t even fucking know how much helly hates her because she’s been shielded by her privilege and status as an eagan. a scene that comes to mind is when she smiles and says man i guess i don’t want to be there huh. and mr milchick just smiles and tells her it’s typical (while it’s established that it isn’t by the reactions of the other characters.) anyway i hope helly felt the love that irving felt for her in the moments that irving held her when she finally woke up. i hope she felt the warmth of their friendship in the cold abyss.
