((Hey so fair warning to anyone trying to use a readmore to hide spoilers.... uh, sometimes they just don't fucking work.))

You don’t have to answer this question as it’s probably dumb to ask…but do you know what platform(s) would be a good starting point? Particularly for original content rather then fanart? I heard deviantart is a good place where alot of ppl got there start on but there’s lots of art thrives and such.

don't even worry, it's not dumb at all! it's hard to gauge where to Begin in the vast hellscape that is the online world. i do get this question [and some adjacent questions] often so please allow me to use your ask as an excuse to post a few of my site rankings for various art things!!

for reference, these are the sites I'll be addressing because i have used them at some point within the last year. please note: my information on Cohost and Itaku specifically may be out of date as I haven't used them in a long while. naturally, this is all solely my perspective. i run both a furry/original content account and an anime/fanart account on most of these sites and run them reasonably independently from one another. these rankings are based on how well each account fares on each site.

I will be talking about Patreon and Ko-Fi as if people will only be posting paywalled content there. you Can publicly post on both sites, but for the sake of this post i'm only going to treat them as paywalled sites since well, that's kind of their purpose.

POSTING ART IN GENERAL

the A-tier list sites here are the ones that are most practical, with a decent member presence and little to no algorithms impairing your reach. the only sites here with any sort of algorithm are tumblr and deviantart, but i feel they don't ruin your reach that much.

B-tier list is mostly centered around popularity. there are massive audiences on both masto and twitter. twitter can be really good if you're posting certain content. mastodon has countless instances [read: servers / subdomains, however you want to call them] that can help narrow down an audience and like-minded people. for example, i use mastodon.art whereas many furries may use meow.social. you Can be discovered by people on other servers than yours.

C-tier has been sorted in accordance to audience. this is solely in my experience, but not a lot of new people are flocking to cohost and itaku. we also just hate facebook in this house and i will never give a facebook products a high rating.

F-tier: if you are a new or growing artist, putting your art behind a paywall or making it a chat platform exclusive thing can really hinder your growth. you can still do this of course, but you won't get as many eyes on your work as you would on a public gallery. threads is there solely due to privacy issues that Cannot be overlooked. i will not recommend it.

POSTING ORIGINAL CONTENT / CHARACTERS / NON-FANWORKS

here's how i'd grade these sites for posting Original content, characters, stories, etc. your best sites will likely be furaffinity, deviantart, and tumblr. i've put these three here for their tag use, discoverability, and audience presence. tumblr can be a little glitchy with its tags, but they DO function.

A-tier is entirely centered around audience presence. these sites are great for showing off your work, but they don't have the same population as the S-tier. mastodon can be good as the quieter instances give you more discoverability. bluesky has been THRIVING when it comes to the furry community as of late [i'm personally on there daily] - the only reason i don't put it as S-tier is because it's invite-only AND you need to rely on your work being found through the Feeds feature if you aren't an already established artist.

B-tier: useful, but population may hinder your growth. toyhouse is GREAT for posting your original characters and stories, but it is invite-only and not necessarily gallery-focused [it can be USED for a gallery, but it's not the main purpose]. you can also post stories and lore to toyhouse. discord and telegram are Good, but again it can be hard to gain an audience through sites that require invites.

C-tier: it is DIFFICULT to grow on paywalled sites with original content. cohost [to my knowledge] has been stagnating with the release of bluesky.

F-tier: threads sucks, the end.

POSTING FANWORK, FANFIC, FANDOM CONTENT IN GENERAL

S-tier here is sorted because of audience presence. while twitter does suck, i'm finding a LOT of success there with fanart. tumblr is The fandom site of course. furaffinity is great for a surprising range of fanart that isn't exclusive to furry, and deviantart's Groups feature is still going strong which can give you that extra exposure.

A-tier is: fans Go here, but the population or algorithm can make things tricky. instagram is good for fanwork but the algorithm and the speed that things are posted there can make discoverability an uphill battle. patreon; if you make comics or art with fan characters [especially 18+ content lmao] you can grow pretty rapidly there. patreon, like any other paywalled site, should be a secondary site and not your Primary posting location. artfol and pillowfort are still growing. pillowfort has a Communities feature - sort of like deviantart groups - that you can submit your art to which gives you that extra exposure. artfol is just a nice gallery site and the tagging system is,, decent enough. a little confusing because the tag system looks up keywords in posts and titles First, you have to tab over to hashtag searching specifically.

B-tier: invite only and audience reach. again, bluesky relies on your art to be picked up in Feeds, as there's currently no tag search. inkblot is growing but has a decent audience. ko-fi isn't as known as patreon for exclusive content but it's still a good site. mastodon has tagging that makes discoverability easier, but mastodon and its many servers can make things confusing for some people. itaku's not as commonly used so it may be harder to gain new eyes there once you establish yourself.

C-tier: posting fanart to these sites Can Work. toyhouse focuses on posting and sorting original characters, so treating it as a gallery site won't get your far fast. it isn't impossible to grow as an artist there, but the site isn't intended for fanart posting. i cannot say much on cohost here. telegram and discord, again, it's harder for people to discover you out of the blue unless you mention your server / channel on another site.

F-tier: fuck threads.

lastly, to address thieves,

thieves are gonna be everywhere. i'm sorry to say, but there will always be shitty people. i recommend the following:

watermark your art. not in the corner, don't just sign in one spot, place a Huge translucent watermark over the WHOLE art. i recommend making it a colour gradient too instead of one solid colour or greyscale.

also: sign your goddamned art! put your username on there!

post a low resolution when sharing online. less than 1200px wide or tall. 72dpi. JPEG format. keep the high res privately for yourself.

add a subtle noise filter over your art. it doesn't have to be high opacity, and it'll make your art a little grainy, but it's good for fucking with AI bots and ruining any print quality potential.

i hope this offers some insight! if you have a different experience on these sites, please feel free to add your testimonial in the replies or reblogs! not every artist is going to have the same experience and growth rate.

i can’t say that jean doesn’t also have a messed up mind… it’s just a different kind of twisted and honestly it’s super interesting to see how a raven exists outside the nest. like neil went for two (three?) weeks and was so fucked that he kept losing hours of consciousness and was very much Handle With Care physically for a while. even looking at kevin without hearing his perspective you can tell that somethings quite wrong with that boy. so you take someone who experienced the worst of the worst of what the nest & riko had to offer and watch him slowly learn to be a somewhat functioning person just like neil did. throw in the california sun, some lesbians, and the bleach blond guy kevin day himself has a mancrush on and u have one hell of a book

as an archon, sickness did not apply to zhongli. it was a problem that he never faced. so when his mortal form came down with a case of the cold, it was quite literally the most dramatic he had been with you in a very long time. 

it was actually quite funny, hearing his voice go all nasally and having such a graceful and uptight man laying on your sofa as you made soup for him. of course, he didn’t find it very funny when you giggled at him. 

“dear~ please stop laughing, i feel so… what’s the thing you say? ippy?”

you couldn’t control your laughter, “icky, zhong. icky.” of course you wouldn’t laugh at him if something was seriously wrong, but right now he was just a little under the weather, and would be walking around liyue like nothing had happened in a couple of days time. 

“i finally understand what you mean when you say that. it’s not nice” 

“i know its not nice dear, here.” you brought a bowl of the soup over to him, as well as a box of tissues. giving him a moment to sit up, you got the thermometer off the coffee table and checked his temperature again, and to your surprise it actually wasn’t too badly out of range. then you handed him the box of tissues so he could blow his nose. 

“so, what is it i do again? just, exhale into it?” gosh he was clueless, how adorable. then again, how could you blame him? it's not like archons are built the same as humans, nor do they have the same bodily functions or needs, it's just a change for him, that’s all. 

“yes, but hard, so you can get all the icky out”

you looked at him with mock insult, mouth wide as you placed your hand on your chest. “well excuse me, master of linguistics!”

Hi. I don’t know what to title this. But I think I kind of just wanted to make a post to warn??? Inform??? People, especially minors, about what this community and lowkey just individuals in general can be like and about how it’s affected me.

For those of you who are newer or just didn’t know, I made my blog and “officially” joined this community when I had turned 17. I had a previous background of being on kik where I had met people similar to me and just made me feel better about the way I was. Do I think 17 is too young to be on this site? Absolutely not. Do I think that there are certain precautions people, especially minors, should take? Absolutely I do.

I had left kik because it was becoming very draining for me. Those of you who have ever had kik and interacted with knismos probably know what I mean. I absolutely wasn’t practicing the safe behavior that I should have been, and I let myself be taken advantage of time and time again at the mere ages of 15-16. I knew better. But manipulation and abuse are things young people are especially susceptible to, especially a kid who wasn’t really receiving a healthy amount of attention at home.

So then I turned 17 and moved to tumblr. I just liked it. I made my cute little blog and was eager to make better friends who would treat me with dignity and respect. This was when tumblr group chats were still a thing, and so I joined a pretty popular tickling group chat. At the time all ages were allowed. And I was happy for a while, I made friends and became especially good friends with the owner of the group chat. At the time, he was 20.

I became infatuated with him. It wasn’t healthy by any means, and it was gross. However, I don’t believe that it was my fault anymore. He was absolutely flirting with me, rationing his attention in a way that left me desperately craving more, even sending me gifts from time to time. I told him everything, he knew everything that made me tick and how to draw me in slowly but surely.

Here’s the thing. He had a girlfriend. I did not know this. I knew he had been flirting with another girl, sure, but he was so off and on with her that I really didn’t know what to believe. And so he starts getting more public in his flirtations with me; reblogging my posts, tagging me in gifs, mentioning me in various posts. His girlfriend or her friends must have found out somehow, because on my 18th birthday I’m getting flamed through asks and getting sent death threats on how I’m disgusting and I’m a home-wrecker and that I should really just go. How confusing do you think that is for a young girl?

I confronted him about it. I was sick of putting up with and cleaning up after his messes. He tells me he’s sorry, that I don’t deserve it, that he’s going to fix it and that I didn’t do anything wrong. I know I didn’t. He’s been in the wrong all along. He preyed on me.

I was coerced into sending him photos. Videos. I was molded into this mess that couldn’t function normally without his approval. I was disgusted by myself and I didn’t know how to make things better. Eventually I cut him out of my life.

I think it’s important to add to this that I have never known a love that wasn’t abusive. I’m not saying this to make it better because it doesn’t. But I know how many young girls out there who are in the exact same situation I was. Please, please protect yourself. The idea of an older person making you feel good about yourself might seem appealing but I’m begging you. Don’t give into that. You will find other outlets that are healthy and right. You don’t have to fall into that cycle of abuse. And just know if you have/are going through that, it is not your fault. People that age know better. It doesn’t matter what excuse they give.

It’s worth saying that I’ve been through a couple more abusive relationships/friendships after that. This one person I was friends with, around two years ago, happened to be my age and I was eager to be ready to engage in friendships again. He ended up being the most emotionally abusive person I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. You get love bombed the first few months and then it gets turned into an endless cycle of torment.

My body wasn’t enough for him. He wanted more than my presence as a friend and so I had to change for him. Of course he would never outright say it, but being gently pressured over and over again to eat more, gain more weight, be less excited when I’m talking about things, only be happy when he’s the one giving me attention and following his rules. It was hell and I don’t know why I put up with it for so long.

I eventually cut him off too. I was an adult at this point and so was he but really abuse can happen at any age. I was definitely more susceptible to it considering how I was treated when I was 17, a child, but my point remains the same. I can’t tell you what to do. But all I ask is that you take the precautions to preserve your youth. Don’t make “friends” with adults in a community like this. Don’t let your life force get drained away by people who want to morph you into something you’re not. Be. Careful.

This was mostly just me having a therapeutic moment, but if you read this far, I hope it can help you in some way, too. And if you can relate to anything I said, I’m sorry. You deserve better than what you got and I only wish the best in the future for you. I love you. There are people out there who will treat you in a healthy way and there is so much more to life than the internet.

I guess it’s also reasonable for me to give props to people who have really changed my life for the better and that I’m super grateful for.

Law, my beloved.

I've just finished reading Law's novel and I've been writing some random thoughts while I was doing it. Here they are (spoilers, obviously):

I had never really thought about exactly what Law had to do to cure himself of his disease and removing his liver with the help of his fruit to operate himself without anesthesia was not in my bingo card.

Thank you for your service, Wolf.

Law taking pity on Bepo and giving him a place to stay… you are a good person, Trafalgar, stop saying you are not !!!!!!!!

And Law also decides to have Shachi and Penguin stay with him because he's mad that Shachi's uncle would try to do to them what Doflamingo did to him… please, get off tumblr, I want to be alone.

Law has social anxiety and I mean, I’m not surprised.

I've said several times that Law functions like Doflamingo in the sense that he doesn't do anything for anyone that doesn't bring him personal benefit, and now it turns out that this novel is teaching me that it's something he also learned from the second man who saved his life. But Wolf's principle of give and take sounds more like an excuse for the children to be kind to each other and to others. Given what their stories are (not only Law's but also Bepo's, Shachi's and Penguin's), it's a good way to teach them basic decency. And in the end, that principle doesn't mean anything when it really matters to either Wolf or Law.

I had also never thought about the reaction Law might have had upon learning that Doflamingo has become the king of Dressrosa. At that point he is 16 years old and the events of Minion Island are not that far behind him. And the parallel between Law's nightmares upon discovering the news with Doflamingo's nightmares about what he experienced as a child… the idea of Doflamingo's recurring nightmares are one of my favorite details about his character because it's the one detail that makes him human and vulnerable, that would almost make you empathize with him if it weren't for literally everything else.

Me when the group first sees the submarine that will later become their pirate ship:

It's funny that Law stops Wolf from killing his own son because he doesn't want to see again how someone is capable of killing his own family and you can see the parallels with Homing and Doflamingo, only Homing was never able to do anything against his son and the consequences were devastating for everyone.

I'm SO GLAD Law's reasons for going out to sea were not only his revenge against Doflamingo, but also to find out what exactly is the freedom that Corazon gifted him. His revenge is important but it also has to do with making amends for the mistake he and Corazon made in not being able to stop him from taking Dressrosa. And yet there is also purity in his journey because he loves his people and they love him, his journey is not completely tarnished by anger.

In conclusion, mom I love him.

Now while you are not normally in my feed (I don’t really check my feed though so idk 😂) I do want to ask because I don’t wanna accidentally cross a boundary:

are we allowed to reblog your works (fics, art, etc) normally? Like click the reblog button and reblog it to our profiles? Or is that also something you wouldn’t prefer?

yes, absolutely! reblogs are my preferred form of interaction with my works. nearly all of my works have the note of "please reblog to show your support! likes do nothing."

on tumblr, reblogs and reposts mean two very different things. to reblog is to increase the artist's reach, easily show your friends the cool thing you found, have the option to add a comment, and keep a direct connection to the artist's profile and activity. to repost is to post the work as if it is your own, redirect credit to the wrong person, and leave the artist completely in the dark to how their work is perceived.

as they are now, community reblogs are functionally reposts. the artist does not receive the community notes in their own activity, and if they are not a member of the community then they are unable to join the conversation at all. in my opinion, this is not a good move by tumblr especially with the way that artists and authors in this fandom are already often denied respect. that's why i also don't want people to repost my fics to rec them; i have posted them all here and they can easily be reblogged to start that discussion.

as an author, i really want to know what my readers think of my fics! that's why i'm sad when people are too shy to speak to me because i may never know how much they love them. i have multiple spaces to discuss my fics (this very askbox, @fics-and-fables, @overcome-series, and my overcome discord server) so there is no excuse for anyone to go out of their way to discuss my fics while excluding me from the conversation.

Notes about clip submission:

For a jerma clip to be viable, it cannot be too heavily edited. Jerma greenscreen clips are an exception to this. As much as I would love to rate everyone’s awesome jerma edits as cute, those types of submissions would quickly fill the blog. (I have plans in future to celebrate jerma editors via “fancam friday”, but this is very much a wip idea.)

I know a lot of artists don’t like qrts on Twitter because they remove engagement from the original post, but on tumblr, the engagement stays with the original poster, so I’m curious why you don’t want comments on reblogs. Is the engagement thing why you don’t like comments on your art, or is there a different reason?

hi! so im going to write this post with the assumption some people who read it may be unfamiliar with tumblr so pls excuse me if im explaining things you personally already know/is considered common sense/etc... i am also unsure which parts i should consider common knowledge/how far to explain so please forgive me if i overexplain a bit!

so on tumblr, comments on art do not affect engagement, but it is still commonly held etiquette not to add comments directly onto reblogs of art.

the reason for this is that when you add a comment directly onto a reblog (ie, not in tags nor the reply function) is that the comment becomes permanently affixed to that version of the post. it becomes a secondary caption, basically; it is not the same as a reply on twitter or a comment on insta. if the reblog with the comment is reblogged by someone else, that comment will remain and can continue to be shared, even if the commenter were to later delete the post. you now then, effectively, have a new version of the post that has additions to it.

this has become somewhat more of an issue lately, as tumblr recently updated to remove the ability to go to where somebody reblogged a post from. which is to say, if somebody encountered a post that has a lot of additive comments on it, but wanted to reblog the original/a version with less or different comments, they can no longer do so unless they scavenged someones blog for the post manually.

generally speaking, many artists prefer no direct additions be made to their posts (although sometimes people add image descriptor IDs, which i dont mind people doing) so that only the original iteration exists and can be reblogged, without anything extra added onto it that isn't meant to be there. the reply function (looks like a chat bubble at the bottom of a post) is a newer addition, but most people still prefer to add thoughts/commentary in tags -- since reblog tags only serve an organizational purpose within someones own blog/exist to help filter content warnings, it is very commonly used to add comments, since that will stay within someone's specific reblog and will not affect or change a post. original posters are still notified of every reblog and their tags (and i really like to go through and read/reread tags), so any commentary can still be appreciated and seen even without having to attach it to a post directly

tl;dr: id just prefer my art posts to be able to stand alone and be able to be shared that way w/out extra comments/a comment chain on them

However, I have a trigger about cheating. Please please please please please do NOT tag me in Will Ransome x Reader works. I cannot excuse, deny, or ignore that he canonically cheats on his wife, especially with whom he had years of a loving, healthy, happy marriage.

Reading the summary of The Essex Serpent when the pics came out and having it dawn on me what happened. I began to subconsiously project myself onto Stella Ransome. I felt like it was me who was cheated on. That subconsciously, I was not good or pretty enough and that a guy I would love and be devoted to would stick his penis in another woman the second I got sick or was unable to or failed him.

Last year when The Essex Serpent tv adaptation came out, I had to work through this trigger. It was heartwrenching since I love and thirst for Tom like everyone else, but I had to block his tag for a long time on Tumblr. Although I personally have not been knowingly cheated on, seeing clips or gifs or pictures from it would nearly send me into a panic attack, make me unable to sleep at night from the anxiety, and in a horribly sad, angry mood that I would need to find something to distract myself with. Now, it's better than it used to be (go to therapy, kids).

Hell, I wrote an entire, now complete Fix-It-Fanfiction series to cope with how I felt about him with Stella Ransome taking charge of the narrative and her retelling the events of the story, grieving the affair and getting revenge on Will and Cora instead of either slowly waiting to die or drowning herself (If the gifs on Tumblr are right, I think that's what happens, someone corrects me if I'm wrong. I even enjoy making jokes and roasting him to cope. I still mutter "asshole" whenever I see him across my screen with a pic or gif that slips through the blocked tags. Posts here of me being a hater will be tagged "w*ll hate" if you don't want to read them.

But that is to say, no one on Earth can't write him or thirst after him just because I am one hater. I do my best to ignore your guy's reaction pics and gifs when I see them. I know it's not fair to crap on someone for enjoying him because of how I feel- that I can't tell someone to stop eating a donut because I am on a no-sweets diet.

To be fair, I remember reading one fic of him that is the exception (I'll tag it later) because it was so beautifully written and completely ignored his canon actions. And lots of fics in general ignore canon- and it seems many of y'all's fics do that! From the summaries, y'all's fics are more like "hot priest! wahoo! looks like there's some SINNING going on ;). Oh, and cheating? What cheating? That's not happening!" rather than "yup he was totally right to cheat on Stella." And you guys should feel free to write for whoever you want however you want! Heck, aren't a lot of us writing about Loki, who is canonically a narcissistic, self-destructive, toxic mass murderer?

I wanted to join and follow Tumblrs to feed my passion, interest, and love for Tom but was hesitant to do so because of all the reblogs and stuff regarding Will being the best thing since sliced bread and my personal feelings about this character. And I still want to with tags blocked. And now I am finally following y'all and it feels fantastic and wonderful.

I want to read and support and reblog your works. Please please please tag me in your works about Loki, Prince Hal, Jonathan Pine, James Conrad, Dr. Robert Laing, Captain James Nicholls, Sir Thomas Sharpe, Billy Magnussen, William Buxton, John Plumptree, etc. I will be perfectly happy to reblog and comment on them!
