So, we can all agree that when Oscar eventually gets his semblance, it's going to have something to do with Ruby, right? And I'm not even saying this from a shippy lens. Kid has an immortal wizard move into his brain at 14 that he can't kick out, immediately becomes a child soldier, lives through a train crash, countless grimm fights, crash lands a plane, gets shot in the chest, falls for - quite possibly - a few kilometres after blowing up a hole in the bottom of a military compound, gets beaten up and abducted by a goopy grimm super monster, magic blasted by his headmate's ex-wife, tortured and beaten up by a man six times his size, fights off Salem again to save his friends, and not ONE of those instances has been stressful enough to awaken it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But both times he's talked about his semblance manifesting, it's been with Ruby. The first is in v5 after they spar and Ruby cheers him (and Jaune) on about getting there one day, while Ren makes a comment saying:
"One common philosophy is that a warrior's semblance is a part of who they are".
The second time is in v7 when Ruby does something new with her own semblance and Oscar asks if she's always been able to do that. Eventually leading to him lamenting again about how he's not unlocked his yet while everyone else's are evolving. And it's Ruby that responds with:
"Well, I'm sure we'll all be jealous when you do (figure it out)".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, from both Ruby and Oscar's perspectives, we are shown their attachment to each other. Ruby throughout V9 with Neo's illusions, and Oscar with - many instances - but especially in the recently released epilogue where he speaks at her grave. And in this speech we're reminded of that attachment as well as his struggles with identity. Specifically how those two things are intrinsically linked together:
"You always believed in the best. Saw people for who they really were. Some of us... don't know anymore. "
Oscar can't grasp his own personal super power that's "a part of himself" when he doesn't know who he is. He's losing himself to the merge, the boundaries of where he ends and Oz begins are blurring by the day, and he's only 15 and still growing into the person he could become. And the one person that was always certain of who he was, always made him feel like he was his own person... isn't around anymore. So he feels even more detached from his identity and the parts that comprise it than ever before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But she returns in Vacuo before their final fight, and his semblance has been teased too many times to never appear. So my current guesses are either:
he's going to unlock it under stress to save Ruby from certain danger, because he "lost her once and won't risk it a second time"; or
he's going to unlock it in a different, maybe even quieter moment, where - once again, thanks to Ruby's certainty - he starts feeling like himself again.
Only one way to find out.

And as a bonus because I felt it wouldn't fit with my last ask: It is mean to say Blake's character development when it comes to being in a relationship might have gone backward? I mean, you would think after Adam she would want to be more upfront with wanting to stand on equal terms with Yang. But Blake mostly went along with what ever Yang wanted in Vol 7-8. It makes her advice to Nora feel hallow and that she's back to where she was before she met the others. The only difference is that Yang is a way better person then Adam. I know I've probably brought this in an ask before, but it's something that I've thought about in recent days. Blake really got the short end when it came to her character.
I saw both of your questions so I’m just gonna combine them in this post.
You’re right about Blake not having much of a personal investment to Salem. That could’ve been solved by making Adam run back to Salem with the other villains in V5 instead of completely divorcing him from the main plot. There’s irony in him working with humans but they could double down on him simply wanting the world and enemies to suffer. I would’ve paid money to see Jacques’s face hearing a soldier say “Adam Taurus is in the manor.” You can argue Weiss needed more of reason at the beginning but that remedies itself by her learning Winter is supposed to be a maiden. She doesn’t need a specific villain. Her reason is making sure her sister doesn’t get murdered.
As for Blake’s relationship status, o stand by my opinion it makes the most sense for her to want to be single for a while. Nora’s character arch is a very nice message, but it honestly should’ve gone to Blake who needs it more because the entire show makes Blake act based on the partner they attach her to.
V1-V2 had her act based on what Adam trauma and she only stopped because Yang told her to get a grip. Her even finding the WF was with Sun’s help.
Blake wasn’t planning on doing much or letting people help her in V4 without Sun kicking her butt into gear for the next volume; also implying a little bit of romantic behavior since V1. Then V6 has her trying to be a good partner to Yang and once again deal with her ex. After that traumatic experience, the show has her flirting with Yang. I know V7 has time skips but the flirting started after the haircut which was only a few days after V6
The decision to tell Robyn was brought up and pushed by Yang without any say from the other teammates which personally bugged me. Yang is obviously a better person than Adam by far but you can make the argument Blake gravitates to strong willed and outwardly passionate people, which creates an environment where she has less agency, or more likely to be a follower. Especially in later seasons because she would actively be trying to be a better partner instead of a better teammate to all.
So yeah I also found it a little odd for her to be one saying “You have to know who you are outside of the other person” when the audience doesn’t really get Blake making strong decisions and statements that come from her own way of thinking and not outside sources. Her strongest choice was cutting the train to leave the WF.
Nora’s never had a problem telling Ren and her friends when she thinks something is dumb or wrong and that they should be doing something else. She took the lead in the V6 conversation telling Jaune to heal, and is perfectly fine slapping Ren to his senses when he needs to get a grip.
If you read this far, just know I actually like bmblb and I think Nora’s development was sweet, but I really wish Blake stood up on her own more often.

That 'Blake projects her psycho ex on another resistance figure' line especially rankles me because her deciding 'hey, I'd rather NOT be a blackbagging army cop' and filling Robyn in was actually one of V7's neater character beats! Guess that'll teach me (yet again) not to trust this studio's idea of followthrough.
So in the scene she isn't drawing comparisons to Adam, I know that because I didn't have a brain aneurysm. Rather, she's making comparisons between May and Ironwood/Ace-Ops because she doesn't understand that being pro oppressed group isn't the same as being anti-oppressor.
Funnily enough Adam had the same problem in reverse.

What's your most hated scene/moment of each RWBY volume?
v1: anything to do with jaune / conclusion to blake & weiss's arc where weiss doesn't even apologise for the racism, just says that she doesn't care that blake was in the wf.
v2: the students laughing at jaune wearing a dress / the talk between jaune & neptune on who can "have" weiss.
v3: any of the superfluous fights because they were so goddamn boring / the reveal of adam as a toxic, abusive ex complete with cringy dialogue & a caricature of what abuse looks like.
v4: the cringy humour moments like ruby laughing at jaune's bunny hoodie or nora telling ren to look away when he accidentally looks up her skirt / any of the blake scenes. especially her slapping sun.
v5: hazel blaming ozpin for the death of his sister as if it wasn't her decision 😭 / the bird scene with qrow & yang where she just goes off on one for no goddamn reason.
v6: pyrrha statue / qrow assaulting oscar & everyone ganging up on ozpin after the revelation of his worst trauma & abuse & murder by his wife.
v7: the coworker not friends scene / rwby vs the ace ops.
v8: just everything with james / penny dying.
v9: ruby's suicide scene / everyone comforting jaune afterwards as if it wasn't ruby who'd just killed herself.

RWBY character tier list based on writing quality
Opinions on some individual characters:
Ozpin: great for V1-3, but meandering afterwards. Didn't need to be a main character.
Torchwick: great starter villain, appears just the right amount, leaves the story at the best possible time.
Ruby: generally good, just needs more moments to show off her personality and to challenge her as a leader.
Weiss: Generally alright, peaked in V4 and V6, had little to do from V7 onwards despite taking place in her home.
Penny: Near perfect from V1 to V8, dropped the ball starting with the hack, and monstrously destroyed her character arc by the end.
Cinder: She's a roller coaster of quality. Just needs to be refocused and kept on a clear path.
Neo: neat side character in V1-3, her return from V6-V9 was ultimately unnecessary.
Nora and Ren: comedic side characters that struggled to stay relevant after V3. Attempts at giving them arcs came too little, too late. Should be recurring side characters instead of main characters.
Blake: terrible racism allegory. Good personal story with fluctuating execution quality. Starts becoming aimless by V8.
Tyrian: good example of RWBY's struggle to introduce darkness without pushing the rating. Ends up being a saturday morning cartoon villain, though he has some high points in V7.
Big guy who stabs himself with rocks whose name I'm forgetting: "I will kill as many children as I have to in order to stop you from killing children."
Adam: nadir of the racism allegory. Good job as Blake's psycho ex though.
Salem and the gods: clearly meant to be endgame antagonists but just come off as tropey and unintimidating.
Maria: didn't need to exist after V6.
Hound: first time a grimm has ever felt like a genuine threat. Could have been a stellar recurring antagonist but killed off way too soon.
Summer: took too long to expand on her, to Ruby's detriment.
Oscar: Just not interesting, and most of his development happens off-screen. Should be a recurring side character, not a main character.
Ace Ops: a massive contributor to RWBY's cast bloat problem.
Sienna: the other nadir of the racism allegory.
Jaune: On four different occasions, women are maimed or killed for his development. On multiple occasions, moments that should have gone to Ruby are given to Jaune. On two occasions, his character development is reset so he can relearn the exact same lesson again. You treat a tumor by cutting it out.
Feel free to ask for details about anything.

One thing I really want in to be brought up in some way for V9 is the fact that Weiss has now lost everything she once had.
Weiss “I’m more than a name” Schnee, has grown up as the the heiress to the biggest company on Remanent. She honestly did believe in what Oz said, that Atlas should be an example of what can be achieved, but they also have a duty to help others. It’s been clear since the start of V6 being the “ex-heiress” has bothered her. We finally get to Atlas and Weiss gets to see how much her idealized version of the city she wanted to believe in wasn’t possible with Ironwood in charge (something she noticed a bit in V4 with all the rich people at the charity event). She finally got her dad arrested, got to connect in some small way with her brother and mother, and got to spend a little bit of time with Winter. And now everything is gone.
No more Schnee Dust Company, no more Atlas, she doesn’t know what happened to her family, and now for all she boasted she was more than her name, what does her name matter without the SDC?
Obviously, we know she is more than all of that, but I would love for her to get the space to grieve and explore what she wants now. She always said she wanted to make an impact as a huntress more than her connection to her family. What does that mean for her now to have lost her home? How does she feel after being reconnected with her family to lose them again? Never mind watching her other family all fall into the abyss while she tried desperately to hold Cinder off.
We know we are going to get a lot of deserved time for Ruby, and Yang also has things that need to be addressed at this point, but Weiss has also being going through it and the events of V7 and 8 should of hit her harder than the others. I’d love to see some of that made more explicit.

Pyrrha's path notes
Qrow ( @scareqrowbranwen at default) found Pyrrha, severely wounded and clinging to life, atop the ruined communications tower along with Ruby. She was brought to a hospital in Vale and woke days later. Following eventually being discharged, she remained with her teammates. Recovery is SLOW. As a team, they answer Ruby's letter and meet with her together.
V4- Pyrrha travels with RNJR. Her new attire is focused more on securing her injuries (ex flats with armor that supports her heel) For many of the story beats she has to stay back where it is deemed 'safe' as Pyrrha is still recovering from her injuries. Ex. She stays in town for the Geist fight, is present but kept back when they encounter Tyrian, and sidelined with Qrow in Kuroyuri.
V5- Pyrrha attends the meeting at Haven with RNJR. At this point, she has recovered enough to return to training and is present in the group's training sessions. Ozpin's note for her would be along the lines of that she has a great deal of strength to rebuild after surviving such injuries. Pyrrha does not go with RWBY +JNR and co back to Haven the night of the battle of Haven. The group knew something was off and Pyrrha was not strong enough for combat yet. She stays behind at the house.
V6- Pyrrha remains with JNPR when the group splits on the Argus Limited. In Argus with her team, she continues to work on training and regaining strength. JNR's moment at the monument from canon is partially different as Pyrrha is alive but still centered on the team coming to terms with what has happened and communicating with one another instead of shouldering it. In the battle of Argus she fights alongside Jaune.
V7- Pyrrha remains with JNPR to secure the dust mines, abeing recovered enough to fight. When the group is gifted new attire, her armor is once again reworked to support her heel. She receives her huntsman license alongside everyone else. By now Pyrrha has regained the strength to once again hold her own in fights and be deemed recovered. The night of the election she goes to the movies with Jaune, Oscar, and Weiss. She remains with JNPR for the remained of the story beats.
V8- Pyrrha goes with Jaune, Oscar and Ren, and Yang to focus on the evacuation of Mantle. She remains with this group through the divided story beats. Once everyone reunites, she remains with JNPR + Oscar. When Nora, Ren, and Emerald cross the portal to Vacuo to call for assistance from Shade, Pyrrha goes with them. Due to this she is not present for the fight against Cinder, nor RWBY + Jaune Falling
V9- Pyrrha remains with her team in Vacuo. She does not believe RWBY + Jaune to be dead. She is not coping well being separated from her partner and buries herself into aid tasks and training.

@bubblinelovechild first credit to this blogger that got me thinking about Adam and @dragynkeep @uncaught-coolfish too
Second I wanna say that I don't like Adam at all I once got accused of being an Adam Stan ( seeker ) there are very few things I like about Adam very few his design semblance theme song and every fight he's been in my opinion is well choreographed that honestly about it
Third I find Adam poorly written not because I think Adam was supposed to be a badass anti hero no I find him poorly written because Adam is just terrible not the good terrible either the idea the abused becoming the abuser oppressed becomes the oppressor is good in concept but bad in execution
Adam in the context of the show is just a crazy psycho ex boyfriend who's abusive there's no actual character behind Adam
We're supposed to believe Adam is consumed by hatred and spite but why
Though One of the problems with Adam actually scratch that the main problem with Adam is that he lacks a backstory take cinder backstory in volume 8 later half Now, yes it's too little too late but cinder backstory is one of the more well written aspects of in v8
It explores cinder character it shows how while yes she's an abused victim she's an abuser she abuses emerald the same tactics her adopted mother and Salem uses on her she does the same thing to emerald
She continues the cycle of abuses her backstory is an open door on her character we get a look at Cinder on a more deeper level but we don't get that for Adam his lack of an actual backstory we get no character exploration on him we don't get that like with cinder
Another problem is the fanues racism storyline Adam is one out two biggest figures in this storyline and that's poorly written itself Adam is the biggest victim of fanues racism his brand on his face that goes nowhere
In v7 in dust mines nothing hints or implies Adam brand Blake just uncomfortable Weiss gives a half ass apology marrow is used to once again remind people hey we fanues have it bad the brand only exits for shock value it doesn't hold any actual weight because it isn't explored no other fanues has a brand like this
The easiest way to actually fanues racism is through Adam the biggest victim of racism we can explore through him how truly bad fanues have it can add depth to both the storyline and Adam character it can finally explain why Adam is the way he is we can finally more angles of Adam character
But instead we don't get that Adam the biggest victim of racism in is just sum crazy ex boyfriend why does he feel the way he does for Blake what is it about Blake that makes Adam go crazy it feels weird
There's also his lack of any real dynamic outside of Blake the reason why Adam is an antagonist for Yang is 🐝 that's it remove Yang relationship with Blake Adam and her have no dynamic no interconnected storyline
The dynamic he should have had is with Weiss till this day it is odd how Adam has no personal vendetta against Weiss it's her family company that literally branded him like property it's her company that's been an enemy to the white fang and has caused the fanues problems yet no interactions at all
Adam had to have known Weiss was Blake teammate I mean Weiss is a celebrity any team she gets on has to be public knowledge yet no acknowledgement on his part or hers
Weiss could have seen Adam Brand and realized how much damage her company has caused to the fanues but nope I don't even think Weiss knows he exists
Adam is so poorly written it's almost sad there's no complexity no newounce no depth no actual character Adam only serves as a means of bringing the bees together his dynamic with Blake isn't even that good
We don't see very much of their relationship Blake grew up privileged with no racism in her life Adam faced it literally the series doesn't do a good enough job about how being a faunes growing up in a world that hates you really affects their characters it's all just surface level
In conclusion Adam is a poorly written character he's good In concept but only really good in concept his execution as a character is bad his dynamics are bad he's never given an opportunity to properly have a good character storyline or backstory Adam isn't spite he's wasted potential because the writers didn't know how to properly write the white fang and the fanues racism storylines
