Latvia revokes residence permits of Russians
The Latvian authorities intend to deprive Russian citizens who fail to pass the Latvian language exam of their residence permits.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the Latvian government’s decision, saying that there were wheelchair-bound and even blind Russians among those who failed the exam.
“They have been working in Latvia for many years, paying taxes faithfully, but now they have been deprived of a minimum social package and access to free medical care. Many have no relatives, houses or other property in Russia.”
The residence permit issued to Russian citizens expired in September 2023. Then they had to apply for EU long-term resident status, for which they had to obtain a certificate of proficiency in the state language at A2 level.
There are about 1,000 Russian citizens living in Latvia who have not yet applied for residence permits. The process of expelling is very complicated, according to Maira Roze, head of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

the reason ios sucks #24355 is that ios does not permit any browser developer to actually develop a real browser – they have to build on top of webkit which powers safari. the existence of browser alternatives on ios is a mirage – they're all skins of safari. this has been the case since ios released. that's why ios users don't have extensions on firefox mobile.
only if you live in the eu – apple has finally been forced by regulators this year to permit other browser engines on its platform. apple is super mad about this and promises to strictly region lock the feature because it's very unsafe. lol.

ROME, October 16 — RIA Novosti. Italy has imposed the toughest restrictions among its allies on arms exports to Israel, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said.
"After the start of the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip, the Government immediately suspended the issuance of all new licenses for the export of military materials to Israel. Thus, all contracts signed after October 7 were not executed. All export licenses issued before October 7 were analyzed on a case-by-case basis," Meloni said, speaking in the Senate of the Italian Parliament on the eve of the EU summit on October 17-18.
"Italy's position, which consists in a complete block of all new export licenses, is much stricter, much more restrictive than those applied by partners: France, Germany, Great Britain. They continue to evaluate new licenses on an individual basis," Meloni stressed.
She noted that with the complete suspension of the issuance of new licenses, Italy is evaluating old permits, taking measures where there is a risk that this military "material can be used in the current crisis."

As Egypt builds a five-meter-high concrete wall to seal off a five-square-kilometer area along the border with Gaza, we cannot help but think of the "no-go zone" on the border between Poland and Belarus, in which thousands of refugees have been enclosed over a period of years, trapped between countries and left to die.
https://crimethinc.com/NoBordersTeam
Since 2021, the government of Belarus has cynically used thousands of refugees displaced by wars in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Ethiopia, and elsewhere as a weapon with which to exert pressure on the European Union. EU governments have callously left these refugees in limbo between two militarized borders, establishing a restricted zone so that observers cannot see them die.
The majority of the inhabitants of Gaza were already refugees from other parts of Palestine. The world has already turned a blind eye while the Israeli government has set about ethnic cleansing in Gaza. If we permit them to complete that process by forcing the survivors into a containment zone across the Egyptian border, it will set a gruesome precedent that will be repeated elsewhere around the world.

An illegal toxic dump site in Croatia, the theft of water from a major aquifer in southern Spain, illegal trading of ozone-depleting refrigerants in France: This is just a sampling of the environmental crimes that European countries are struggling to stop. The lack of accountability for these acts stems in part from the European Union’s legal code, which experts say is riddled with vague definitions and gaps in enforcement. That’s about to change.
Last week, EU lawmakers voted in a new directive that criminalizes cases of environmental damage “comparable to ecocide,” a term broadly defined as the severe, widespread, and long-term destruction of the natural world. Advocates called the move “revolutionary,” both because it sets strict penalties for violators, including up to a decade in jail, and because it marks the first time that an international body has created a legal pathway for the prosecution of ecocide.
“This decision marks the end of impunity for environmental criminals and could usher in a new age of environmental litigation in Europe,” wrote Marie Toussaint, a French lawyer and EU parliamentarian for the Greens/European Free Alliance group, on X...
The new directive uses the term “ecocide” in its preamble, but does not criminalize the act by laying out a legal definition (the most widely accepted definition of ecocide was developed by an international panel of experts in 2021). Instead, it works by providing a list of “qualified offenses,” or crimes that fall within its purview. These include pollution from ships, the introduction of invasive species, and ozone depletion...
The new law holds people liable for environmental destruction if they acted with knowledge of the damage their actions would cause. This aspect of the law is important, experts said, because it means that a permit is no longer enough for a company to avoid culpability.
“If new information shows that behavior is causing irreversible damage to health and nature – you will have to stop,” a member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands, Antonius Manders, told Euronews.
Advocates like Mehta hope that the EU’s move will have influence beyond Europe’s borders. The principal goal of the Stop Ecocide campaign is for the International Criminal Court to designate ecocide as the fifth international crime that it prosecutes, after crimes against humanity, war crimes, crimes of aggression, and genocide. At the moment, environmental destruction can only be prosecuted as a war crime at the ICC, and limitations in the law make this extremely difficult to do...
Kate Mackintosh, the executive director of the Netherlands-based UCLA Law Promise Institute Europe, told Grist that the ICC is unlikely to adopt an ecocide law if other countries do not do so first.
“It’s not something you can just pull out of thin air,” she said, adding that any international legal doctrine has to have a precedent on the national level. “That’s the way states are going to accept it.”
The EU’s 27 member states will have two years to adapt the new legislation into their penal codes. Afterwards, their implementation must be reviewed and updated at least once every five years using a “risk-analysis based approach,” to account for advancements in experts’ understanding of what might constitute an environmental crime. Mehta said that despite its omission of some important offenses, the law sets an important example for other countries. Several days before the EU vote, Belgium adapted its criminal code to include the directive, making it the first country in Europe to recognize ecocide as a crime.
The ruling “shows leadership and compassion,” Mehta said. “It will establish a clear moral as well as legal ‘red line’, creating an essential steer for European industry leaders and policy-makers going forward.”
