Dracula a Love Story characters and their historical counterparts
Vlad - Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler and Vlad Dracula (Vlad Țepeș), was a 15th-century ruler of Wallachia, notorious for his brutal punishment methods, particularly impaling his enemies. He defended his realm from the Ottoman Empire and became a national hero in Romania.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mehmed - Mehmed II, also known as Mehmed the Conqueror (Mehmed bin Murad), was the Ottoman Sultan who famously captured Constantinople in 1453. Historically, Mehmed II clashed with Vlad Dracula during campaigns in Wallachia, adding political depth to their enmity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Radu - Radu III, also known as Radu the Handsome, was the younger brother of Vlad the Impaler and historically served as a ruler of Wallachia under Ottoman control. His rivalry with Vlad is well-documented, as Radu supported the Ottomans while Vlad opposed them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sultan Murad - Murad II was a formidable ruler who expanded Ottoman control in the Balkans and fought against various European coalitions. His campaigns laid the groundwork for the later conquests of his son, Mehmed II.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gjerg Skanderberg - Gjergj (Gjergj Kastrioti), commonly known as Skanderbeg, was an Albanian feudal lord and military commander who led a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. Skanderbeg's legacy as a defender of Christian Europe against the Ottomans is similar to how Vlad Dracula is viewed by some in Romania. Both are celebrated as national heroes who fought for independence and freedom in their respective lands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Erzsebet (Erzsi) - Erzsébet Báthory (Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed), also known as The Blood Countess or Countess Dracula, was a Hungarian noblewoman from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, infamous for allegedly torturing and killing young girls. She is considered one of the most prolific female serial killers in history.

1. Darya Saltykova was a Russian noblewoman accused of torturing and murdering at least 100 of her serfs. Most of the serfs she murdered were children and young girls. Complaints about Saltykova were ignored by officials for a very long time until relatives of her victims were able to bring an official petiton before Catherine the Great who sentenced her to be chained to a public platform for one hour wearing a sign stating 'This Woman tortured and Murdered', Saltykova was later imprisoned in the basement of a convent for the remainder of her life.
2. Alice Kyteler, a well known Serial Killer in Ireland during the 14th century, murdered 4 men and escaped to England where she was never heard from again.
3. Mary Ann Cotton, Britain's first serial killer, was suspected of the murders of 14 people, including her stepson, in her older life twenty one people close to her died. Her motive was gain, as she would marry, kill and collect the insurance money, then repeat it again. She was hanged in Durham prison on March 24, 1873.
4. Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed was a Hungarian noblewoman and reputed serial killer of hundreds of young women in the 16th and 17th centuries. Stories of her sadism and brutality quickly became part of national folklore, her infamy earning her the nickname “The Blood Countess” or “Countess Dracula”.
5. Giulia Tofana was an Italian professional purveyor of poisons, and the inventor of the deadly poison Aqua Tofana, which is named after her.
6. Locusta was a notorious maker of poisons in the 1st-century Roman Empire, active in the final two reigns of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. She supposedly took part in the assassinations of Claudius and Britannicus.

Do we have a name for Shilo's mother yet? If we don't I'm gonna go out on a limb and say she's this lady, Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed, who's infamous for being one of the major inspirations for Dracula. I know she's hungarian and not romanian, but still.

Here’s where I ended up last night (there was a whole rabbit hole, including finding out Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed was likely innocent).
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vrykolakas
If you like that piece about Elizabeth, listen to Our Fake History which goes VERY in-depth about the accusations against her. He uses historical records and facts to examine myths, urban legends, and other things that get passed around, mostly orally. I like to listen to him on long road trips, he has some REALLY good episodes, too.

Annon-Guy: Now that Slayer's trailer dropped...
It appears Slayer's been taking fashion advise from Castlevania's Dracula and Persona 4's Kanji Tatsumi. What do you think?
So, his new Overdrive has him turn younger after drinking his opponents blood (if you look closely, his side burns go away after he bites his opponent off-screen). What's the deal with that?
Kanji "Freaking" Tatsumi is a bit of a stretch, I think Slayer has more style than him.
He's a Vampire, and supposedly drinking the blood of humans can restore their youth, albeit temporarily… this was most notable in the story of famous Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed who would bathe in the blood of her victims.
By the way, if you're curious here's a current list of all known Vampires~

Passing the Torch - Part 17
Kenaz has gone by many names, but one must never be spoken. Traveling, on the run, for centuries. But the past is always bound to repeat itself.
Mistakes are my own, I will fix them eventually
Also, trigger warning for attempted suicide, I will put a ** when the scene begins and a ** after for those wanting to skip over it.

Mystic Falls, 2010
Elijah broke the embrace, glancing back at Elena and attempting to rush at her through the door.
"Elijah." Kenaz scolded, grabbing onto his arm, "She just undaggered her and now you try to kill her." His jaw tightened as he regarded her. He knew she was right, but his anger was overruling his judgement. Elena's breathing was slightly shaky, probably from Elijah's lunge.
"What happened?" He asked before Elena hushed him, pointing up then to her ears. Stefan and Damon were sleeping upstairs, anything could wake them up.
"I'll tell you," She whispered, "Not here. Can I trust you?"
"Can I trust you?" He replied. They watched Elena think for a minute. Then, to their surprise, she handed Elijah the silver dagger. He took it, still gauging her movements. Once in his possession, he glanced back at Kenaz.
"She certainly knows what she's doing, doesn't she?"
Hungary, 1612
Her travels, running from the ones she had once called family, brought her back to a place where she had lost herself almost completely to bloodlust and murder. Katrina had come back, hearing word through the grapevine that someone she had turned was nearing the end of the line. Her once dear Elizabeth, one that she turned to take away from her husband's delights, had become sired to Kenaz. Elizabeth had made a name for herself in royalty. Going from a lowly peasant girl to compelling her way into Hungarian royalty. Elizabeth was smart and cunning as a human, and it was only amplified as a vampire.
So when Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed heard of Kenaz's arrival, she had invited her to her palace. At this time, Kenaz had also compelled herself as someone of importance. Baroness Katrina von Gutmann of Lichtenstein, accompanied by her ward, Anna Maria Johannasdottír. Anna Maria was a distant relation of her own blood. From her tracing, her father's uncle's son had made a name for himself in his travels, spreading their family far and wide. She had found Anna in an orphanage in Norway, taking the girl in as her own to teach her the ways of the world.
Katrina loved Anna as if she were her own, more than anything in the world. Her pale blonde hair complimented her blue eyes well. Her soft smile was enough to comfort her worries. She excelled in her studies at just eleven years, already fluent in several languages. Anna had potential.
And when Katrina had received this summons, Anna had begged to come with her.
She should have left her behind. Where it was safe.
-
"Oh my own heart!" Elizabeth had greeted Katrina with open arms, barely about to get their arms around each other due to their dresses puffiness.
"My goodness, Elizabeth, a duchess." Katrina smiled, "I would have never imagined." Elizabeth oulled away from the embrace and held her hands.
"And it is all thanks to you. You are the reason for all of this. And for that, I owe you everything." She gave her hands a final squeeze before sweeping her arm towards the grand throne room. Elizabeth's home was grand and everything that she had expected of a Duchess.
"Please, I invite you to stay as long as you like. We will have guests later for dinner, and of course, a private supper, just you and I." She opened her mouth to speak again, but she had caught the eye of Anna.
"My, my." There was a certain twinkle in Elizabeth's eyes. Her grin widened. "You didn't tell me you brought me a present." Anna seemed to tremble under the Duchess' stare, wringing her hands together in front of her.
Katrina chuckled lightly, breaking the tension and putting Anna at ease. She brought her ward close to her side, "No, no, this is my ward, Anna Maria. Anna, say hello."
"You have a beautiful home, your Grace." Anna said softly, giving a curtsey.
"Why thank you, Anna Maria." Elizabeth's eyes seemed to fixate on the soft pink blush in Anna's cheeks, "Such a pretty young thing."

Mystic Falls, 2010
After coming to the Lockwood mansion and compelling Carol to let them inside and give them space; Elijah, Elena, and Kenaz sat in the living room as she began to explain the events that had transpired since Klaus had arrived.
"So I assume that the Martin witches are no longer with us." Elijah said, looking quite dapper since he changed from his dirty and ripped suit to one of that once belonged to Mayor Lockwood.
"No." She mumbled, "I'm sorry."
"And Katerina? She would have been released from my compulsion when I died." The thought hadn't really occurred to her that Katerina wasn't in the tomb. She had been there a majority of the time since Kenaz had been made aware of her presence. But knowing how explosive Katerina and Klaus' personalities are, she wouldn't have been surprised if Klaus hadn't killed her.
"Klaus took her." She sighed, "We think she may be dead." Elena didn't seem too bummed at the thought of Katherine's demise. Then again, if Kenaz was plagued by an exact copy of herself hell bent on making her life miserable, she could understand the sentiment.
There was a little smirk on Elijah's face when he said: "I doubt that. Not Klaus' style. Death would be too easy for her after what she did." He glanced at Kenaz, "After what they did."
Kenaz received raised eyebrows from the girl, "You helped Katherine escape from Klaus?"
"At the time, I saw it as helping her escape." She huffed, "Now, however, it feels like I released a plague upon Virgina."
"I don't understand." Elena turned back to Elijah, "You say you want Klaus dead... But you still make Katherine pay for betraying him. Why not make her pay too?"
The smile that had been on his face fell, "I have my own reasons for wanting Katerina to pay. There was a time that I would have done anything for Klaus. Klaus is my brother."
"I heard that. I'm just still processing..." Her eyes widened.
"Yes, I'm a little behind on the time... But I believe the term you're searching for is O.M.G." He took a sip from the tea that Carol had brought them, a dedicated host. He glanced at Kenaz, a twinge of a smile returning, "As far as Kenaz goes..." He placed a hand on her knee and squeezed lightly after setting down his cup of tea, "There is an understanding between the two of us." He stood up, leaving Elena to look at her, an eyebrow raised.
Not wanting to go into too much detail, Kenaz kept it simple: "To make a long and depressing story short, Klaus betrayed us both in the worst ways possible. Some would say in the most personal way possible."
"Me and my family." Elijah looked in the mirror, adjusting the way the suit say against his frame.
"There's a whole family of Originals?" She asked.
"You didn't think it was just us three, did you?" Kenaz leaned back against the couch.
"My father was a wealthy landowner in a village in Eastern Europe. Our mother bore seven children."
"So..." Elena stood, hands on her hips, "Your parents were human?"
He turned to look at her, "Our whole family was. Our origin as vampires is a very long..." He looked at Kenaz, seeing how she seemed to stare into the distance, a hand absentmindedly on her stomach, "And painful story, Elena. Just know, we're the oldest vampires in the world. We are the original family and from us all vampires were created."
"Right, but Klaus is your brother." She stared at him incredulously, "And you want him dead?"
"I need some air." He said, beginning to walk away, "I'm still feeling a tad... dead." He walked passed her, "Come." Elena paused for a moment, but quickly followed. They left Kenaz in the sitting room, thinking about what had happened.
-
Mystic Falls, 10 AD
While Klaus went out in search for food, he put Elijah in charge of watching Kenaz. It was just hours after everything had happened. Hours since her life and the life of her child was lost forever. She sat on the floor of the hut, hugging her knees and rocking back and forth against the straw. Her pain was not physical but it felt like her ribs were being torn in two, the ache of heartbreak seemed to amplify.
Elijah had been standing for a while, pacing at some points, but after a while he decided to speak to her, to give her some sort of comfort.
"Kenaz... Perhaps... You could try again. Maybe bring a new generation of beings like us. Beings that will always be protected by the magic mother used to protect us."
"No." She said with no emotion, "There must be balance. Her spell broke the balance of life and death. And there are consequences. The dead cannot create life, only more death." She leaned back against the wall, gripping onto her oversized dress. The fabric at her belly had been stretched due to her child growing, and now it hung flat and misshapen.
"It is like I can still feel him kicking..." She hiccuped a sob, hallucinating bumps and kicks of a lively child inside her. "So desperate for life, to meet us, to breathe."
Elijah thought against for a moment, "What of an orphaned child? Maybe one from a village nearby?" He opened his mouth to say more, but a scream in the distance cut him off. Their heightened hearing allowed them to hear the snarling of their kin, creatures that lusted for blood, attacking helpless victims.
**
"It sounds as if Nik would rather create orphans than raise them." She muttered and stood, walking over to the nearby table, leaning against it. Without him noticing, she took hold of a dagger, a ritual dagger. Fitting.
"Kenaz... I-..." He thought for a moment but he sighed, "I am so sorry. I would do anything to save you from this heartbreak, but I cannot. So, if there be anything I could do to ease your suffering, please tell it to me."
She thought a moment, tightly gripping the wooden handed, "Do not stop me."
"I beg your pardon?" He asked quickly. Watching as she turned around, raising the dagger to her throat, preparing to drag the edge across her jugular vein.
In that moment, Niklaus appeared, drawing back the curtain of the hut to see his brother and his wife with a dagger.
"NO!" He appeared in front of her at lightning fast speeds, grabbing her wrist before she could make an attempt on her own life. Her eyes were wide, staring at him in shock. He had been just a few feet away, if at normal speed, he would not have been able to reach her in time. Elijah was breathing heavily, his arm that held hers seemed to shake.
**
"What hell is this?" He seethed, storming forward and shoving his brother away to look into his wife's eyes. She looked at him in horror, the dagger dropping from her hands. Instead of the face she loved, his eyes were that of a demon. His eyes appeared extremely bloodshot and dark, purple veins pulsing around his eyes. His mouth, stained with blood and sharp fangs in his smile.
Kenaz cried out in fear, stumbling back against the far wall of home.
"Wildflower-" He took a step towards her, his dark features fading away.
The smell of the blood that stained his mouth and clothes hit her sense, and when she caught her reflection in a bucket of rainwater. Her features matched his own, a side effect of their curse. They became monsters, so they looked like monsters. She screamed again, sliding down the wall and falling a part into a fit of panicked sobs.
"Leave." Klaus barked at his brother, his face hard. But when he went to his wife, his features softened. He kneeled in front of her, pulling her into his arms as she cried in fear of what they had become.

Inspiration From Trivia #14
Hungarian noble women, Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed, was an alleged serial killer in Hungary from 1590 to 1610. She and four of her servants were were accused of torturing and killing 600 girls and women.
Elizabeth Bathory was referred to as the “female Dracula” because she bathed and drank the blood of her victims to maintain her youth. These accusations only began to arise after the death of her husband in 1604. Original accusations claimed that peasant women were the victims of Bathory, but these claims were largely ignored. In 1609 there arose claims that Báthory had slain women from noble families as well. These were the claims that drew attention and led to her eventual arrest.
In January 1611, she and her servants were arrested for 80 counts of murder. The servants were put on trial, convicted, and sentences to death. While Bathory herself was never tried, she was confined to a bricked-in room whose only access to the outside world was a few slits for air and food. She survived there for three years until being found dead in August 1614. She was 54.
While historical documents supported these allegations, modern research indicates that Báthory might have been the target of politically motivated slander that allowed relatives to appropriate her lands. For example, Matthias, the king of Hungary and the individual who ordered the investigation into Bathory, owed a large debt to the family which was cancelled in exchange for permitting them to manage Elizabeth’s captivity.
