Show your villain's evilness. What I see in a lot of writing is characters or the narrator telling the reader/protagonist that the villain is evil. Countless stories of what they've done, the harm they have caused etc. That's all well and good, but what does that do? To truly know how evil a villain is, we have to see it. Your villain is not evil for evil's sake, they have a reason. Don't add it in just for shock value.

They believe what they do is for some greater good or other goal. Sometimes, that involves showing they mean business, tying off loose ends, or simply they enjoy the reaction it gets. Depending on your villain these acts of evil can differ. Mass destruction with a nonchalant flick of the wrist because someone dared to question them. A loyal servant left wounded and dying because they will be dead weight, and victory is close at hand. Or showing that they've had spies in the protagonist's inner circle since the beginning. No one can be trusted.

Your villain is a villain for a reason. Show us. Don't hold back.
