The people who worked at The Dunlap tire factory in Buffalo/Tonawanda NY showed up to work on Nov 7 to the doors locked. That’s over 1500 people out of a job apparently without prior notice. Sumitomo, the Japanese company that owned the factory, decided the factory wasn’t viable after evaluating it for a couple years. Over the next 2 years the company is going to spread production throughout its other factories. None of them in the US.

There’s a severance program so I guess that’s nice.

One of our latest test bikes in the stable has been the V-Strom 800DE, Suzuki’s most off-road capable adventure bike yet. To test its dirt-worthiness, we replaced the street-biased tires it came with for some more aggressive off-road rubber. We opted for a set of Dunlop's all-new Trailmax Raid adventure tires with a 40% on-road and 60% off-road rating. We're looking forward to seeing what the V-Strom 800DE can do on the trail now with upgraded grip and we’ll report back with all the details soon!

John Boyd Dunlop was born on February 5, 1840. A Scottish inventor and veterinary surgeon who spent most of his career in Ireland. Familiar with making rubber devices, he invented the first practical pneumatic tires for his child’s tricycle and developed them for use in cycle racing. He sold his rights to the pneumatic tires to a company he formed with the president of the Irish Cyclists’ Association, Harvey Du Cros, for a small cash sum and a small shareholding in their pneumatic tire business. Dunlop withdrew in 1896. The company that bore his name, Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company, was not incorporated until later.
