Coeli's Picks: Pink, part 2
(Multiple movies listed left to right.)
One Dress a Day Challenge
March: Pink Redux
Murdoch Mysteries (s7e8, "Republic of Murdoch") / Hélène Joy as Dr. Julia Ogden
I asked Coeli if she knew of any good pink dresses for Dr. Ogden and she said there were surprisingly few. And then I ran out of March before getting a chance to use any of them! But here's what she found.
"This one seems to be from Season 7. I have not yet tracked down a better picture or an episode number for it, but it looks promising."
s13e11 ("Everything Is Broken, part 2"):
Niagara (1953) / Marilyn Monroe as Rose Loomis
The 10th Victim (1965) / Ursula Andress as Caroline Meredith
To Catch a Thief (1955) / Grace Kelly as Frances Stevens
"Did she wear a single outfit in this movie that wasn't iconic?"
Green Acres (s1e2) / Eva Gabor as Lisa Douglas
s4e2:
Bewitched (s5e12, "Weep No More My Willow") / Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens
DuBarry Was a Lady (1943) / Lucille Ball as May Daly
L'Innocente (The Innocent) (1976) / Jennifer O'Neill as Teresa Raffo
American Horror Story: Hotel (episode 2 "Chutes and Ladders") / Lady Gaga as the Countess
"Okay, the color of this one isn't really pink, but I love it!"

HATS! ~ Part 4
Miscellaneous Millinery
Outside of her four television series, Lucille Ball had a career as a model and a movie star - in both worlds hats were an integral part of the overall look. She also did numerous TV specials where her head was adorned.
Lucille Ball’s modeling career started at Hattie Carnegie, a salon where she worked as a hat model.
A few of Ball’s iconic hats are displayed at the Lucy-Desi Museum in Jamestown, New York.
In a 1950 print ad for Carling’s Red Cap Ale, Lucy wore two hats: a red satin jockey’s cap (the sponsor’s symbol), and a mortar board.
“Lucille Ball, too, has graduated to Carling’s - the light-hearted ale!”
In 1938, Lucy modeled ladies' hats based on characters from Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Needless to say, she looked “charming”.
Lucy’s got it in the bag!
In 1937 Lucille Ball was seen modeling a Coronation Hat. The coronation of King George VI would take place at Westminster Abbey, London, on May 12, 1937. Ball did not attend, but as a young model, was widely seen in this Associated Press photo. As an interesting sidenote, more people watched the birth of Little Ricky on “I Love Lucy” than the televised Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, where Elizabeth receive the ultimate in hats - the jeweled St. Edward’s Crown.
On March 26, 1961, Lucille Ball appeared on the cover of Family Weekly, a Sunday supplement to newspapers to model Easter hats.
The inside article by Margaret Bell was titled “Lucy Loves Easter Hats” and featured Lucy and her daughter, Lucie Arnaz, trying on various bonnets.
On Lucy Day at the 1964 World’s Fair, Lucy was accompanied by the world’s most famous hat-wearing gossip columnist, Hedda Hopper. Not to be undone, Lucy wore a blue straw hat to tour the grounds.
In the International area, the People’s Republic of China adorned Lucy with a traditional pearl headdress. At the Hawaiian Pavilion, another hat for Lucy - this one woven from palm leaves.

Mary Astor and Jean Harlow in Red Dust (1932), edited by Blanche Sewell. It was not uncommon to see female editors in Hollywood's golden age, a trend that continues into the 21st century.
Blanche was born in Lowe, Oklahoma, and had 62 editor credits, from 1925 to Take Me Out to the Ballgame (1949). Her other notable credits include The Big House, Red Headed Woman (also with Jean), Queen Christina, Treasure Island, Born to Dance, The Wizard of Oz, Go West (with the Marx Brothers), DuBarry Was a Lady, and The Pirate.

Any Lucille Ball fans out there?
She’s in a 1943 film of the 1939 musical DuBarry Was A Lady. It includes a Cole Porter number, Friendship, with Red Skeleton:
youtube
The song was a hit for Judy Garland with Johnny Mercer in 1940 and became a staple WW2 song:
youtube
Fast forward more than a decade later, I Love Lucy airs an episode where Lucy and Ethel agree to do a number for a women’s show. It’s fun during rehearsal:
youtube
But then they start getting egos and erupt in a fight. So they have to go on stage with these tensions, with passive aggression results:
youtube
I wasn’t sure whether 50s kids in Liverpool would have seen I Love Lucy. But it looks like ITV aired the show in 1955, and Lewisohn has the McCartneys renting a TV as early as 1953 for the coronation. So it’s possible they knew the episode.
But I think they definitely knew the song. And had made fun of it enough to riff on it. Maybe a remanent of a Hamburg or Cavern routine?
January 31, 1969, John and Paul.
If you’re ever in a jam, here I am
If you’re ever in a shit, grab my tit
That’s friendship, friendship
Another friendship to be forgot, ours will still be hot
#they met everyone else but did they meet lucy?#bug influences#pj you forgot this one#Youtube#my replies#get back sessions#john and paul#audio#lucille ball#old hollywood#cole porter#easy to forget sometimes but these two had encyclopedic knowledge of pop songs#even if they liked to spit on jazz bc it was oversaturated and their parents music

The Rose of Versailles is unlike any manga I have ever read before and any anime I have ever watched. I have never read a manga based on a time in history. Perhaps I dozed off more than I realized during history class, as I was unfamiliar with Marie Antoinette and the workings of the French court before delving into this manga. It was definitely a unique delivery for a history lesson. I thought that the gender fluidity of Oscar was quite interesting, and her role as commander of the palace guard put her in some tough situations. I also found it entertaining when the ladies of the court swooned over Oscar's looks. Furthermore, Oscar's appearance and loyalty from the court ladies made Oscar a pawn for the court drama. For example, both Marie Antoinette and Madame Dubarry want Oscar's mom to be their lady in waiting, as whoever has the favor of Oscar also has the favor of the lady's at court. Also, Jeanne sucks. First she lies about her social status, then she abandons her family, then she climbs the ranks, finally she wants to kill her family and the lady that took her in. She does not give a crap who helped her get to where she is nor who her family is, she only cares about living a life of luxury. This is kind of similar to Madame Dubarry, who climbed her way up the social ladder by prostitution. It's interesting that prostitution and low rank people are so looked down upon, yet the King fell in love with one and so did Jeanne's dad so what's the big deal anyways. I also find it interesting that Marie Antoinette is so disgusted by Madame Dubarry and I wonder if things would have gone differently if Madame Dubarry was just nice to other people at court.

The Latest Trends in Women's Horse Riding Boots
Horse riding isn't just a sport; it's a lifestyle. And within that lifestyle, fashion plays a crucial role. Gone are the days of simple, practical boots relegated to the stable. Today's women's riding boots are:
A fashion statement.
A blend of functionality and flair.
Seamlessly transitioning from arena to avenue.
So, whether you're a seasoned equestrian or a weekend hobbyist, buckle up and discover the latest trends in womens horse riding boots that will have you turning heads both in the paddock and beyond.
1. Classic Chic
For those who cherish timeless elegance, the classic tall riding boot remains an undisputed champion. Crafted from supple leather in rich browns and blacks, these boots exude sophistication and practicality. Think polished Polo Ralph Lauren elegance or the equestrian chic of Penelope Chilvers. Pair them with breeches and a fitted blazer for a competition-ready look, or dress them down with jeans and a chunky knit sweater for a cosy fall vibe.
2. Embrace the Short
Not everyone needs a boot that reaches their knee. Short-riding boots are chic and versatile, perfect for warmer weather or those who prefer a more casual aesthetic. Look for square-toe styles like those from Toteme, or embrace the Western-inspired trend with a pair of knee-high cowboy boots from Khaite.
3. Material Matters
While leather is the traditional choice, innovative materials are making their mark. Waterproof horse riding boots for women by Aquatalia are perfect for rainy days, while rubber riding boots from brands like Aigle offer ultimate practicality without sacrificing style. For eco-conscious riders, vegan leather options are becoming increasingly popular, offering a cruelty-free alternative.
4. Beyond Brown
While neutrals will always be a staple, bold colours are taking the equestrian world by storm. Rich burgundy boots by Dubarry add a touch of elegance, while emerald green boots from De Niro Boot Company make a statement. Feel free to experiment with pops of colour, especially for casual wear.
5. Details Make the Difference
It's the little things that elevate a primary boot to a fashion statement. Look for subtle details like contrast stitching, embossed patterns, or decorative buckles. Chain accents on boots like those from Tory Burch add a touch of edgy glamour, while tassels on Penelope Chilver boots inject a playful vibe.
6. Beyond Riding
The beauty of the latest women's riding boots is their versatility. They're no longer confined to the stables. Pair knee-high boots with a mini skirt and statement tights for a night out, or rock short boots with a flowy maxi dress for a bohemian chic look. The possibilities are endless!
7. Sustainable Style
Conscious consumers are increasingly seeking sustainable options in all aspects of their lives, and equestrian fashion is no exception. Look for brands like Parlanti and Mountain Horse that prioritize environmentally friendly materials and ethical production practices.
8. Comfort is Key
No matter how stylish your boots are, they should be comfortable to wear in the saddle. Look for features like padded footbeds, flexible shanks, and breathable linings. A good fit is essential, so consider getting your boots professionally measured.
9. Invest in Quality
A good pair of ladies' riding boots is an investment. Choose quality materials like full-grain leather and sturdy construction. With proper care, they can last for years, becoming a cherished part of your equestrian wardrobe.
10. Find Your Perfect Fit
With so many women's riding boots on the market, the key is to find a pair that reflects your personal style and riding needs. Whether you're a competitive rider or a casual enthusiast, there's a perfect boot out there waiting for you. So, saddle up, embrace the latest trends, and show the world that equestrian fashion is anything but one-dimensional.

Gene Kelly (1912-1998)
There was no model for what I tried to do with dance . . . and the thing Fred Astaire and I used to bitch about was that critics didn't know how to categorize us. They called us tap dancers because that was considered the American style. But neither of us were basically tap dancers.
